Lower School News Fifth Grade Horses Around Students in fifth grade recently visited the Houston Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit. While there, the students learned that an officer must be on patrol for at least three years before applying for the mounted division.

Interestingly, the officer does not even have to know how to ride a horse to be accepted into the program! Many of the horses were donated by owners who could no longer care for them.

As a result, there are all different breeds of horses. Most of the horses are very large in order to accommodate the weight of the officer and his gear. The mounted division is used in several ways, but mostly crowd control.

The Houston Police Department is the only large police department in the country that has barefoot horses. The horses wear no shoes, and their stability and general health is better as a result. The horses’ hooves actually expand

upon striking a surface, causing increased blood flow throughout the body.

These horses eat hay all day with a supplement of oats at night. Their diet and the fact that they wear no metal shoes is patterned after the mustangs of the old west.

The canine unit is also housed in the same facility as the horses. The dogs are trained in Europe and obey commands in the language of their birth country. The dogs were trained this way so that criminals cannot use English words to try and confuse the dogs. Each dog lives with its handler, and the two form a very close bond. Canine teams work on many types of crimes, including missing persons and drug cases.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Football 2-0 In District The Warriors are on a roll after scoring their second straight district win with a 56-0 victory over the O’Connell Prep Buccaneers last Friday night.

On both sides of the ball, the Warriors had a fantastic night.

The offense had 187 yards of offense on 13 plays in the first quarter. Also in the first quarter senior lineman J.T. Leever blocked a punt and returned the block eight yards for a touchdown. Sophomore running back Dirk Sanford had a great night

finishing the game with 85 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He was also voted player of the week by readers of The Courier. Click here for the full story.

The Warriors hope to continue their winning ways as they travel to Cypress Christian on Friday, October 26 for another district contest. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Warrior Cross Country Has Success At State Meet -- by Coach Tom Earle What a way to end the season! The cross country team had four first-time events happen at the TAPPS State Cross Country. Riley Farra (freshman) won our first medal by finishing in 7th place! Shortly after, Luke Shearer (senior), won our second medal by also finishing in 7th place! In team competition, the boys team finished in THIRD place and the girls’ team finished 6th overall. Prior to this season, our best individual finisher was 21st overall and the best team finish was 11th place.

In addition, the middle school cross country team completed their season on

Tuesday with the NHAL District meet. The boys’ team finished in second place behind Katy Faith West. The highlight in the girls’ race was that we finished in first and second place!

Congratulations to the middle school district medal winners: Hannah Shearer (1st), Madelyn Rasberry (2nd), Sam Mueck (2nd), Ben Mueck (4th) and Cade Glover (9th).

Way to go Warriors!! You worked hard all season and your efforts were rewarded!

The boys’ varsity team gets things started on Thursday, October 25 with a scrimmage against Concordia Lutheran. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The girls’ varsity team will host Fort

Bend Baptist Academy on Tuesday, October 30 at 6:00 p.m. Middle school teams will begin their schedules the first week of November.

The Woodlands Christian Academy annual book fair is next week!

Tuesday, October 30 - Friday, November 2 7:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

(The book fair closes at noon on Friday, November 2) Students in PK—8th grade will attend the book fair with their classes to make a wish list or shop.

Each student will bring home his/her wish list to share with you, and the library will also keep a copy. Students may come to the fair before school, during lunch, on a pass from the teacher, and after school. All of the proceeds from the book sales directly benefit the Woodlands Christian library. **Special Note for Lower School students**

On Wednesday, October 31st in celebration of this year’s All Star theme, students may dress in a sports uniform…their own sports team or a favorite team…cheer uniforms welcome, too!

Thank You Mr. Molina!

We would like to thank Mr. David Molina for his five years of service to The Woodlands Christian Academy as Director of Technology. During Mr. Molina’s tenure he oversaw the complete upgrade of our technology department and for this we are truly grateful. We pray all God’s best for Mr. Molina in his new endeavors.

Wes Smith, who has assisted in our technology department for the past two years will now assume the duties of network coordinator and continue to take care of our technology needs.
