Head of School Notes -- by Julie Ambler We rejoice in the strong start to our 20th school year! There is much to celebrate! First, as a Christ-centered school, we get to teach from an unapologetic Christian worldview perspective. Our teaching is based on the infallible Word of God as presented in the Bible, and His Word becomes the lens through which we study all subjects. We cover our students in prayer and, through personal mentoring and encouragement, we seek to point our students into a meaningful relationship with Christ. As an independent school, we are not held captive to the same state or federal educational mandates as public schools. Such standards are referenced only as a baseline or starting point in our curriculum. Textbooks are carefully selected and are only one of many resources used in the classroom. We encourage our teachers to draw from a variety of other resources, providing instruction that is meaningful and relevant. Ongoing research and assessment further allow us to make any adjustments necessary to ensure that we are providing an optimal learning environment. The caliber of our faculty is impressive. This year’s faculty boasts an average tenure in excess of 14 years in the classroom, and 44% hold at least one advanced degree. Most importantly, our teachers are “living textbooks”, striving daily to make the curriculum both challenging and engaging to our students. We continue to raise standards (spiritually, academically and socially) in our Admissions Office and denied admission to more than 38% of this year’s applicants. Even so, enrollment rose 11% over last year and 43% over the past four years. We are pleased to have retained 92% of
our existing students this year and to welcome 108 wonderful new students. We completely filled nine grades and added 92 potential students to our pipeline for 2014-2015. We look forward to replacing our modular buildings with permanent structures and adding classrooms so that we can accommodate more students in the future. Construction on our next classroom building is progressing rapidly. The building is scheduled for completion in early December. We will use the Christmas vacation to relocate the 1st through 8th grade in time for the start of the second semester in January. Soon we will begin enclosing our outdoor pavilion to add an additional gym. Completion is scheduled for late November in order to accommodate our students during the winter and basketball season. We hope to add sport court flooring and air conditioning before next summer. You will hear more details soon, but I am very pleased to announce that Tania and Rob Bryngelson will be chairing this year’s annual fund campaign. Please join me in thanking them for leading this vital fundraiser for our school. I trust your children are adjusting well to the new school year. If you do have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. The faculty, administration and I are committed to offering your children an exceptional Christcentered college preparatory education and making sure that our students have a positive, lifechanging experience at Woodlands Christian. It is truly a privilege for us to serve God and your family here every day. Thank you for the opportunity.
