Fine Arts News Music Programs Thrive At Woodlands Christian Music instruction at The Woodlands Christian Academy begins in pre-kindergarten and continues through high school. Skills learned in the early childhood and elementary classes are the foundation upon which students build their knowledge of music, both instrumental and vocal.

Ground zero for music instruction at Woodlands Christian is Mrs. Nancy Casey’s classroom. Prekindergarten and kindergarten students learn to appreciate music and gain confidence in performing.

In the process, they also use brain functions similar to those needed for reading. Skipping and dancing and learning songs all contribute to the brain development needed to learn how to read as well as preparing students for the more complex song and dance routines used in the annual lower school Christmas and spring musicals. “I help train the ear.”, says Mrs. Casey, “Music theory teaches the notes. Put it all together and the kids are on their way to deciding if they want to pursue band or choir in middle and high school.”(See first photo center.)

In addition to the songs and rhythms they learn in Mrs. Casey’s class, students in first through fourth grades are also discovering the language of music in Mrs. Moree Simon’s music theory classes.

Students who may have never touched a piano now have the opportunity to sit at their very own keyboard and learn to read music and play an instrument. Using iPads connected to the keyboards, budding musicians are able to learn at their individual level of ability how to properly place their fingers on the keyboard and associate notes with the black and white keys before them. How do the students play at different levels at the same time? By using headphones! Students are also enhancing their math skills as the process of learning the abstract concepts of reading music is very similar to the

process of learning to solve a math problem. Mrs. Simon notes, “When a student begins to play the keyboard, it gets the brain oiled and working and moving in many directions using all gears. Music theory is the base from which to launch into instruments or vocals.” (See photo bottom right.)

One faculty member particularly pleased with the music foundation lower school students are receiving is Mr. Charlton Hughes, middle and high school band director. “The new lower school music theory class is a great preparation for students interested in band when they enter 5th grade.

Learning the way that notes are laid out in a logical and symmetrical way makes understanding music concepts easier. Music theory will provide an excellent foundation for learning how to read music so that when students enter the band program, there will be one less obstacle to mastering a new instrument.” (See second photo center.)

Upon entering middle school, students have the option of taking choir with Mrs. Lisa Woods.

Through the use of vocal exercises, Mrs. Woods’ students are not only learning proper singing technique, but they are also putting their math skills to use. Reading and counting notes in music is a series of fractions beginning with a whole that is divided into beats to form a measure. According to Mrs. Woods, “Music is a universal language. The skills that our choir students are learning will help prepare them to participate and succeed in any kind of musical endeavor — vocal or instrumental.”

Like a symphony, each area of music instruction at Woodlands Christian comes together to help students learn to work collaboratively, improve skills in music and in academics and of course, make beautiful music!

Upper School News History Students Create Tablets

Sixth grade students in Mrs. Mia Harpel’s ancient history class used 21st century tablets (their MacBook Airs) to do research about and then create clay tablets like the ones used by the scribes in ancient Mesopotamia who used cuneiform to communicate.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS

Middle And High School Cross-Country Teams Win Meet Despite the difficult and hilly course at the Allen Academy meet in College Station this past Saturday, both the middle and high school cross-country teams had the best showing in our program’s history! It was very apparent that all of the hard work, including hill running, developed our athletes much better than the other schools. We were competitive and strong.

A total of 21 schools competed in the meet and our high school girls team won the meet.

Four members of the girls’ team finished in the top ten: Hannah Shearer, 3rd place; Olivia Gregory 4th place; Megan Worthington 8th place, and Dani Wassell, 10th place. Finishing in the top 20 were Riley Farra and Kaitlin Howard.

The high school boys team won the meet as well! Two team members earned medals, Ben Mueck, 9th place and Joshy Shearer, 10th place. A total of seven team members finished in the top 20.

Twenty-three teams competed in the middle school division and our middle school boys’ team won the meet! Ben Shearer won the entire race with Josh Mueck earning 6th place and Ben Butcher earning 10th place. The girls’ team finished in 5th place overall with Ellie Catron earning a medal with her 3rd place finish. Well done Warrior cross-country!

Warrior Volleyball Wins District Opener The Warrior varsity volleyball team began district play by scoring a 3-0 win in their match against Logos Prep on September 22. The team takes to the road for another district match this time against St. Thomas Episcopal on Thursday, September 24. The next home match is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29 against district opponent Lutheran North. Scheduled start times are 5:00 p.m. for junior varsity and 6:00 p.m. for varsity. Go Warrior volleyball!
