G.I.R.L.S. Club Flies High Members of Girls Interested In Real Science (G.I.R.L.S) recently ventured to iFly Indoor Skydiving to learn about the mechanics of flight. The third through fifth grade students learned about Bernoulli’s Principle* and how to engineer a parachute. They even got to feel the effects of terminal velocity with two flights in the wind tunnel. The first was a low flight and the second was at thirty feet in the air! Information & photos submitted by Robert Roach. *Bernoulli’s principle states that the faster air moves, the less pressure it exerts. This means that when the air above an object moves faster than the air below it, the air pressure pushing up on the bottom of the object is greater than the pressure pushing down, so the object goes up.
Hands On Geography
The fifth grade social studies class recently participated in a hands on learning exercise by creating landform maps of Africa using salt dough. According to their teacher, Mrs. Mia Harpel, “The project was messy, but hopefully the lesson will ‘stick’ in their brains!”

Advice From Shakespeare The well known phrase, “To thine own self be true”, spoken by Polonius to his son Laertes in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, has taken on new meaning for students in Mrs. Brenda Phillips high school English classes. The students have discovered that words spoken in a play written hundreds of years ago still ring true today. Mrs. Phillips asked the students’ parents to write to them a letter of advice. The students then read the letters in class and compared the advice given to them today to that written in Hamlet hundreds of years ago. Surprisingly, much of the advice written by 21st century parents, in some form or fashion, reflected Shakespeare’s words.
