I am pleased to announce that The Woodlands Christian Academy has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2014-2016 for its use of technology to create a blended digital learning environment for students in Pre-K through 12th grade. The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s vision of exemplary learning environments.

The selection of Woodlands Christian as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. Students use iPads, MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs in combination with interactive white boards and Apple TVs in the classrooms to research, collaborate and create original works that are shared around the world. Learning is inquiry based and student work is project oriented. This approach to using technology in the classroom is preparing our students to be leaders in an increasingly global marketplace.

This recognition affirms the work of our faculty to blend the best teaching methods with the best technology in order to inspire and equip future leaders - spiritually, academically, physically and socially. I am proud of our entire school community for receiving this recognition!

Lower School News Spelling Bee 2014 The Lower School held its annual spelling bee on Friday, November 14.

The first, second and/or third place winners in the third, fourth and fifth grade competitions will represent Woodlands Christian at the ACSI district spelling bee on January 16, 2015.

Per ACSI guidelines, the number of district spelling bee contestants is determined by the number of classes in a grade, i.e. three classes of fourth grade students results in three contestants.

Upper School News Student Earns Recognition In Essay Contest

Congratulations to Matthew Michel (9th grade) for being awarded 3rd place for his essay in a contest sponsored by Montgomery County Right to Life. Contestants were asked to write an essay on the topic, Why I Am Pro-Life (see excerpt below).

In summary, there is evidence from both religious and secular viewpoints that abortion is wrong and should be immediately stopped. Religious writings teach that God knew us before we were born, thus suggesting that abortion interferes with the plans that God has for us. Secular evidence supports the position that life exists before birth and that committing abortion is equivalent to taking a life. Taken together, the evidence demonstrates why abortion is wrong and pro-life efforts should be upheld.

Interact Club Activity Benefits Cancer Education To assist the local efforts of CHI St. Luke’s Hospital, the Interact Club sponsored a Pink Out day in October.

This fundraiser resulted in $2,000 being raised to benefit the St. Luke’s Cancer Awareness and Education Program.

Debra Staley, Manager of Marketing, Corporate Wellness and Community Relations for CHI St. Luke’s visited campus recently to accept this donation on behalf of the hospital. (See photo at left. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warriors Score First Round Playoff Win For the second consecutive year, the Warriors have scored a win in the first round of the playoffs. With their their 41-7 victory over Irving The Highlands last Friday, the Warriors have kept their unbeaten streak alive. The team’s record now stands at 11-0.

The march towards a state championship continues as the Warriors face Brazos Christian (9-2) in the regional round of the playoffs on Saturday, November 22. The game will be played at Anderson-Shiro High School with kick-off scheduled for 12:05 p.m.

Warrior Football-Warrior Strong!

Warrior Basketball Begins Season With Victories The 2014-2015 Warrior varsity basketball season is now underway. Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams hosted games at home on Tuesday, November 18. Against Brazosport Christian, the lady Warriors came away with a 49-12 victory. The boys faced a tough Lake Houston team but prevailed with a 67-65 win.

Next up for the Warrior cagers are home games with Covenant Christian on Thursday, November 20. The boys’ JV team gets the action started at 4:30 p.m. followed by the girls’ game at 6:00 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Swim Team Competes At Polar Bear Meet

The Warrior varsity swim team faced off against some of the fastest private schools in the Houston area on Tuesday! The Polar Bear Meet took place at Rice University, and Woodlands Christian performed at their best this season! The girls raced to first place finishes in both the 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relays, breaking the school record in the medley relay. The relay teams were made up of Hailey Hanigan, Sara Beth Bryant, Hannah Bub and Katie Albertson. Hannah Bub also broke her own school record in the 200 yard freestyle and brought home a first place in that event. She also finished first place in the 100 yard freestyle. Congratulations go out to Kennedy Kesterson and Katie Albertson for swimming personal best times in their events. Hailey, Sara Beth, Hannah and Katie all contributed to the girls' second place finish, overall, by finishing in the top 8 spots of all of their events.

Jake Copeland and Oscar Pollitt represented the Warriors on the boys’ side of things. There were only two of them, but they made their mark. Jake finished second in the 50 yard freestyle with a personal best time and fifth in the 100 yard freestyle. Oscar swam best times in both the 50 yard freestyle (eighth place) and 100 yard breaststroke (sixth place). Congratulations Warriors!

The girls’ team will next compete at the annual TISCA meet on Friday, November 22 at the Conroe ISD Natatorium.

Warrior Cross Country Team Serves Others A group of our varsity cross country team members spent last weekend serving others at the Pine Cove camp in Columbus, TX. Our athletes served two youth groups, totaling approximately 300 people, who were attending a weekend retreat at Pine Cove. We served behind the scenes serving food, washing LOTS of dishes,and cleaning camp allowing those on the retreat to focus on their time to grow closer to God. In the midst of our chores, we made time for ourselves to bond, play, and have devotion and prayer times. This was a great opportunity to give back, work hard and appreciate all for which we have been blessed.

Worthy Servants 2014

The Worthy Servants program is a tradition started several years ago by Woodlands Christian parents to show love and appreciation to the faculty and staff who touch our children’s lives each day and as a way to offer an alternative to buying individual teacher gifts.

If you would like to participate this year, you may donate online by clicking here and designate your gift - Worthy Servants. You may also bring or send your donation to our Business Office no later than Wednesday, December 17. All gifts collected will be equally divided among our faculty and staff. These gifts, along with a card, will be presented at our annual faculty and staff Christmas lunch on December 19. Please note: Unless otherwise requested, each donor’s name will be included on the card.

As always, Christmas presents or contributions are never required. However, if you are planning to give gifts, please prayerfully consider showing your appreciation to our outstanding faculty and staff in this way.
