Upper School News CSI - Woodlands Christian The Woodlands Christian Academy recently acquired electrophoresis equipment to analyze DNA. The AP biology class used the equipment to analyze DNA from a mock crime scene. Of the five suspects, they were able to clearly eliminate four after analyzing the DNA evidence at the “scene”. Electrophoresis works by applying a voltage to a DNA sample that has been broken apart in a restricting enzyme. When dye is added and current applied across the protein gel containing the DNA, the DNA fragments separate into bands, looking much like a bar code at the supermarket. These patterns are unique to each individual DNA and can be compared with
samples to see if the DNA matches. AP biology teacher Mrs. Shonda Majors said, “The students’ results were so good, they could have been pictures in a textbook!” (Photos top row.) The students continued their studies using the equipment to learn about gene transfer through bacterial growth. You many want to ask an AP Biology student why it’s so important to take ALL of your antibiotic medicine! (Photos second row.) Upper School News Woodlands Christian Band Travels To Memphis Middle school and high school band students went to Memphis, Tennessee last week for their annual band trip. They performed and participated in a clinic led by professors at the University of Memphis, where Mr. Hughes received his master’s degree. In addition to their performance and clinic they visited some of the musical attractions of the city: Sun Studio (where Elvis Presley made his first recordings), Graceland, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and they got to see the Memphis Symphony Big Band perform. The group also found time to make a stop at the Memphis Zoo. Many thanks to all the chaperones and students for such an enjoyable trip.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Track Our fifth track meet of the season was held at Tomball Concordia Lutheran on April 21. We competed against 15 of the largest private schools in the Houston area. The girls’ team earned 2nd place and the boys’ team placed 6th overall! There were a number of highlights: • Many personal best marks were set in field events Darcy Sanford in the high jump, Alex Harkins in the long jump, Riley Farra in the shot put, and Hailey Watterson in the discus. • Kyle Clark won the pole vault event with a personal best vault of 9'6"! • Emily Rogers set a new school record in the shot put with a 29'1" throw. The running events also revealed how hard everyone has been training: • Hannah Shearer set a new school record in the 3200m winning the race in 12:23! Later, she set another school record in the mile with a time of 5:47!
• Rachel Earle won the 100m hurdles and was barely 2nd in the 300m hurdles (setting a season best time). • Logan Shearer won the 800m and was 2nd in the 400m and still holds the top times in both of those events for TAPPS 3A. • The girls’ 4x200 relay team of Abby Caron, Alex Harkins, Marielle Olivier and Morgan Young were just 0.36 seconds from a school record! • Hailey Watterson and Bailey Greer set personal best times in the 400m. • Jake Copeland set a personal best time in the 300m hurdles. • Despite being sick, Katy Adams set a personal record in the mile! • Kyle Clark sets a personal record in the 800m. This was a great meet and sets us up well for the remainder of the season. On Saturday we compete at the Houston Christian Relays against most of our district competition. Come cheer us on! Warrior Baseball The district portion of the Warrior baseball schedule is in full swing. The team will be on the road for their next two games beginning with a contest against St. Joseph Catholic High School in Bryan on Friday, March 28. On Tuesday, April 1, the team travels to Cypress Christian. Following this road swing, the team will play three straight games at home. They will host Faith West Academy on Friday, April 4 with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Come out and support your Warrior baseball team!

Warrior Softball After being on the road for their next two games, the Warrior softball team will return to play their next four games at home. The first of the four games will be on Friday, April 11 when the Warriors host district opponent Brazos Christian. Make plans now to come out and support your Warrior softball team!

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Tennis The Warrior varsity tennis team competed in their first matches of the season against Bay Area Christian on Tuesday, March 25. In girls’ singles, Micah Dial won both games 8-4, 8-0. In girls’ doubles Jessica Robinson and Cassie Robinson won both games 8-1, 8-0. In boys’ singles, Ross Jackson won his second game in a tie breaker round. Way to go Warrior tennis! Information submitted by Jessica Robinson.
