Warriors Beyond The Walls One of the many things that sets Woodlands Christian apart from other schools is our annual class trips known as, Warriors Beyond The Walls. This program offers students an excellent opportunity to explore and experience history, art and science. In addition, students learn more about themselves as well as their classmates. Lower and middle school students will learn about the wonders of nature as the 4th and 5th grades travel to Pine Cove in Columbus, and the 6th grade class spends time at Camp Allen in Navasota. Our rich Texas history will come alive for our 7th grade students on their visit to San Antonio. The history of the United States of America is the focus of our 8th grade trip to our nation’s capitol in Washington, D.C.
High school students will travel across the state, across the country and across the sea during the course of their trips. The freshman class will travel to London, England while the sophomores stay a little closer to home to visit Big Bend National Park. Science and physics will intersect with some fun as the juniors travel to DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida. The Class of 2015 visits the Rio Grande Valley for a time of missions work and sharing Christ’s love with those in need. Please keep all of our traveling Warriors and their chaperones in your prayers as they make their class trips, March 5-13.

Lower School News Hands On Learning In Lower School Science Lower school students are learning about physics in a hands on fashion. Fourth and fifth grade students recently participated in experiments involving construction of vehicles in which to send eggs on a trip from the top of the Timothy building to the ground without breaking (See photos top row), and learned how craters are made by dropping objects of various sizes and from various heights into sand (See photos second row). What a great way to learn about science!

Upper School News Geology Class Visits Retired Drilling Rig High school geology students recently visited the Ocean Star Offshore Energy Center. The center is a museum housed inside an old jack-up offshore drilling rig, the Ocean Star, that operated in the Gulf of Mexico for twenty years. Students toured the three levels of the museum seeing many aspects of oil and gas exploration and production they have learned about in class over the past few weeks. Mr. Ronnie Reed, a former Texas educator, was the tour guide. On level 1 the students got to test-ride a billy pugh - the rope device used to hoist men and their supplies from a ship up to the rig. (See photo bottom left.)They examined oil and gas traps, seismic data and got to see different types of drill heads. They even saw the evolution of diving suits for some of the men who work at the wellhead deep in the ocean. Here they also got to see vertical and horizontallydrilled wells. While braving the cold on the deck of level 1, the students got to see onshore and offshore Christmas trees (a control-valve assembly), the escape pod for a rig which can fit 28 people, the wireline servicing unit, the diver decompression chamber, and the ROV (remotely operated vehicle). On level 2 the students toured a timeline of the industry’s history, an
environmental exhibit, subsea equipment and other production displays as well as seeing logging technology, pipelines and pigs, a type of pipe-cleaner. On level 3 the students got to see what life on the rig was like. They saw a dorm room mock-up, the driller’s chair where the driller sits for 12 hours while running things and several top/side-views of different types of offshore rigs. There was also a memorial for the Deepwater Horizon Rig accident. At one exhibit on this floor the students could even try on the personal safety equipment of a rig hand (See photo bottom right). Back in the classroom, the students are playing a simulation game called Gushers and Dusters in which the class is divided into different oil companies, drilling companies and banks. The students must acquire loans, make deals, choose seismic surveys from 60 different potential prospects, purchase leases and then drill. With the first day of playing completed, all wells chosen turned out to contain hydrocarbons and were thus termed gushers.

Warrior Varsity Girls Basketball 2014-2015 The Warrior varsity girls basketball team closed out their season by making their first ever trip to the regional round of the TAPPS state basketball tournament where they suffered a disappointing loss to Marble Falls Faith Academy. The team finished the season with an overall record of 10-10 and a district record of 5-4. Thanks for a great season, Lady Warrior basketball! Warrior Track Update Although we were missing a number of athletes at the track meet last weekend, those that did compete did very well, and we saw a few highlights: •Improvement on Collin Bonner’s school record in the shot put by another 6”. He also set a solid mark with the first time to throw the discus. •Emily Rogers set a season best shot put mark by 1’3”. We also saw season best improvements from David Cure, Chase Silman and Isaac Hudson. •Alex Harkins set a season best discus mark by 3’5”. •In their first meet trying new events, Stephanie Cruz set a solid mark in the triple jump, and Jake Adams had a very respectable high jump. •Hailey Hanigan and Hannah Shearer both improved their 3200m times. •Chris and Josh Oglesby pushed for very solid 800m and 1600m times. •Raul Giorgi set an incredible time in the 100m dash. • Our 4x100 relay team of Raul Girogi, Ryan Doner, Calvin Thedinger and Luke Hudson set our 4th fastest time in school history. The team’s next competition is set for Friday and Saturday, March 6-7 at Episcopal High School. As you can see in the photo, while the team works and competes hard, they also have fun!
