Head Of School Notes - by Julie Ambler Each year, the Head of School prayerfully seeks a spiritual theme for The Woodlands Christian Academy, and we emphasize it at chapel, in the classrooms and on the playing fields. This year’s theme is humility, and our scripture verse comes from Micah: 6:8 b “And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” So many wonderful things are happening at our school, in our community and in our lives. Our students are smart, talented and ambitious, with unlimited opportunities to develop skills and make a positive impact with their lives. We are enormously blessed. But, if we are not careful to recognize the true source of our blessings and our responsibility to use those blessings for the good of others, we could be vulnerable as a school and vulnerable as people. It’s not about us, and we’ve done nothing to deserve the Lord’s recent favor on Woodlands Christian. How blessed we are to walk with Him and to share His Truth daily with our students. C.S. Lewis captured the essence of the meaning of humility in Mere Christianity when he wrote, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” John Dickson expanded the definition in Humilitas when he wrote that humility is the “noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself.”

According to Scripture, God exalts the humble. (Luke 14:11) He guides them in what is right and teaches them His way. (Psalm 25:9) We are also called to consider others better than ourselves. (Philippians 2:3-4) Ultimately, humility acknowledges our limitations and need for a Savior. It keeps our pride in check, and opens us up to the possibility of being wrong, receiving correction and asking others how we can be better. It allows growth because it leaves us humble enough to learn and listen. Additionally, humility brings wisdom, and our world is in great need of wise leaders. Martyn Lloyd-Jones wrote the following about the surest way to pursue humility: “There is only one thing I know of that crushes me to the ground and humiliates me to the dust, and that is to look at the Son of God, and especially contemplate the cross. ‘When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.’ Nothing else can do it. When I see that I am a sinner…that nothing but the Son of God on the cross can save me, I’m humbled to the dust…. Nothing but the cross can give us this spirit of humility.” Let us strive to put our blessings and ourselves in the proper perspective so that we may be, and inspire, servant leaders for Christ. By guiding our students to humbly develop their unique gifts and talents and to submit to His power for the sake of others before themselves, we believe that they will one day be exalted by His favor.
