THE WARRIOR WAY Mission Statement The Woodlands Christian Academy is an independent, Christ-centered college preparatory school that integrates learning with biblical faith and challenges our students to reach their highest potential—spiritually, academically, physically, and socially—for the Glory of Jesus Christ.

Global Ends The Woodlands Christian Academy exists to graduate Christ-centered students inspired to fulfill God’s purpose for their lives as leaders —spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially.

Core Values We Relate We thrive in a connected and nurturing community. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. - 1 Corinthians 12: 5-6

We Transform It’s not just what we learn but who we become while learning. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will. - Romans 12:2

We Celebrate We rejoice in relationships and transformation. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

A MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNANCE BOARD From the beginning, Woodlands Christian has committed to partnering with families to provide a biblically-based, rigorous PreK-12 education that will inspire the next generation of students to personally know God, and to prepare them for His unique calling on their lives. Simply stated, the primary End of Woodlands Christian is to “graduate Christ-centered students inspired to fulfill God’s purpose for their lives as leaders— spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially.” The Governance Board exists to ensure our school is achieving this mission in the lives of students while prudently using the resources that God has provided. The Board uses a structured monitoring system to measure the school’s progress in achieving the Ends while maintaining sound financial stewardship and integrity in relationships with families,

employees, donors, accreditation agencies, and the greater community. In addition, the Board consistently focuses on the future and the long-term vision of the school in order to continually direct Woodlands Christian to excel and remain true to its mission. We are grateful for our administration and faculty —a strong team of professionals dedicated to equipping students to thrive spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially. The 2017-18 Annual Report is a glimpse into the work that God is doing on our campus in the lives of students and families. Our prayer is that the statistics, photos and stories shared throughout this report reflect the work God is doing in the hearts and minds of our students. In His Service, The Governance Board

“The course of my life was changed because I attended a Christian school.” - Dr. Dave Anderson, President of Grace School of Theology and founding member of The Woodlands Christian Academy

A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Families and Friends of The Woodlands Christian Academy, On behalf of our Governance Board, administration, and faculty, we are pleased to present this annual report, summarizing highlights from the 2017-18 school year. This was another exciting year at Woodlands Christian. We achieved record student enrollment and began construction of a 63,000 square foot high school building. Most importantly, we rejoiced daily in the maturation and triumph of our wonderfully talented students. At Woodlands Christian, we strive to equip leaders—spiritually, academically, physically, and socially—to fulfill God’s purpose for each of their lives. Through His transforming power, we believe that our students can realize their unique gifts and talents and reach their highest potential.

Thus, we offer a rigorous, Christian, collegepreparatory curriculum taught by an engaging faculty that delivers the personal mentoring and encouragement necessary to help our students succeed and develop a love of learning. Whether in the classroom, at an athletic competition or on the mission field, we challenge our students to become servant-leaders for Christ, capable of making an eternal impact for His kingdom. We hope you enjoy the annual report, in which we focus on our previous year’s achievements and on the annual report of gifts. We are, as always, grateful for the contributions of time, talent and treasure that we receive from the families and friends of Woodlands Christian.

Julie Ambler Head of School

SPIRITUALLY

Our students’ spiritual growth is central to everything we do at Woodlands Christian. The essence of God is apparent in interactions with their fellow students, theatrical performances, classroom projects, community service, and more. We focus on building up students to be compassionate, equipped, servant-hearted leaders in their communities, with a deep-rooted knowledge of who their Creator is and how they can model His love to the world. Warriors participated in a variety of leadership-building activities this year, including Bible studies, chapel small groups, the national See You At The Pole event and National Day of Prayer, all led by students. Our students also gave back to their community in the weeks following Hurricane Harvey, cleaning houses and gathering donations. INTERACT Club headed fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness and THAIR For You. Lower school wrote letters to senior citizens with Interfaith of The Woodlands and participated in a variety of other service projects initiated by teachers. High school traveled to Quito, Ecuador for their annual mission trip, and two students participated in the Summit Ministries Student Conference in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Every year, we see our students gain a greater understanding of the impact their faith can have on the world and watch them take greater initiative to live it out.

QUITO, ECUADOR Woodlands Christian students have served in Ecuador for seven years. Led by Coach Tom Earle and other TWCA faculty and staff, students in grades 9 - 12 are invited to make the trip. The mission is to serve the children and families throughout Ecuador’s capital city, Quito and its vicinity. Alongside longtime partner, Kairos Church, Warriors participated in worship services, lent a hand to build structures and living spaces, explored the city, and laughed together. These thirty students were transformed by the experience, growing closer to each other and to Christ through shared testimonies and reflection time built into each evening.

8

ACADEMICALLY 9

Academically, we offer opportunities for our students to think critically and independently in an environment equipped for 21st century learning. Our curriculum is vertically aligned from PreK - 12th grade, preparing students for success throughout their education. We are accredited by both AdvancED and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Test scores and academic competitions prove that Woodlands Christian students rank competitively against students in the state of Texas, the nation, and the world.

SOCIALLY

Opportunities for social development is apparent in nearly every activity on our campus, in the classroom and beyond. Class trips and outings at each level promote learning and team building. All-school pep rallies unify students and build school spirit. At the high school level, students enjoyed nightly homecoming acitivites, Super Bowl watch parties, a gingerbread house building contest, a talent show, junior-senior prom and more. Middle school had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a field trip to Minute Maid Park just weeks before the Houston Astros’ historic World Series win. For the lower school, an end of year carnival, class holiday parties and field day provide opportunities for fun and build community among parent volunteers, teachers and students. The Kinder Buddies program continues to build relationships between students in kindergarten just beginning their journey at Woodlands Christian and high school seniors nearing the end of theirs. Building deep friendships and the value of teamwork are at the core of students’ social growth.

FINE ARTS

The 2017-18 school year saw huge growth in our fine arts department. Each school held performances for band and theatre in the fall and spring, our middle school improv group was formed, and students at all levels participated in numerous competitions in the visual arts, creative writing, and theatre arts. “It was an absolute blessing watching God’s students shine on stage. Being a part of Improv, Alice in Wonderland, and Bringing Hope to the Stage will be something I will never forget,” said Palvin Williams, middle school theatre arts teacher. Band Director Pat Crofton said, “The TWCA Band experienced significant growth. In the fall, the newly formed drumline performed at home sporting events and pep rallies. Sophomore Benjamin Gunthorpe advanced to the ATSSB All-State Band, earning second place in the baritone saxophone competition. Benjamin is the first student from TWCA to earn this honor. He traveled to San Antonio to rehearse and perform with the ATSSB All-State Symphonic Band.”

In the 2017-18 academic year, high school students participated in the World Scholars Cup, an academic competition that includes a team debate, collaborative essay, multiple choice test, and quiz bowl. For the second consecutive year, the team qualified to participate in the global round of competition which was held in Barcelona, Spain. According to Crystal Chapman, club sponsor and TWCA English teacher, the participating students worked incredibly hard to prepare for their performance on a global stage. “I am so grateful to the past leaders who taught these students and built in them a foundation of scholarship,” she said. “I thank our families for valuing the experience and education a trip abroad affords. And, most importantly, I thank these students who spent so much extra time studying on top of all of their other commitments; they are amazing!”

FAMILY PARTICIPATION

The Woodlands Christian Academy Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) is our parent organization in which relationships are fostered to enhance fellowship and community within our school among families, teachers, staff, and administration. Our PTF offers support for various needs of teachers in the classroom, promotes school spirit, and nurtures one another in Jesus Christ. All TWCA parents are encouraged to participate in PTF, as the needs and opportunities are various and plenty! This year PTF hosted Warrior Nation Night, back-to school grade level parent coffees, two Bible studies for our moms, grade level parties, social events, service project opportunities, and our annual Lower School End of Year Carnival! In addition, PTF coordinated Moms-In-Prayer, teacher birthday treats, snacks and goodies for teacher’s lounges, grade level Homecoming festivities, the Woodlands Christian Book Fair, Worthy Servants participation, teacher appreciation luncheon, and snacks during testing week. Our Woodlands Christian PTF also partnered with the Office of Development in offering support during the production of our Auction and Gala, which was hugely successful!
