M E S S A G E from the Governance Board “The course of my life was changed because I attended a Christian school.” --Dr. Dave Anderson, President of Grace School of Theology and founding member of The Woodlands Christian Academy From the beginning, Woodlands Christian has existed to partner with families to provide a Christ-centered, rigorous PK-12 education that will inspire the next generation of students to personally know God and to prepare them for His unique calling on their lives. Simply stated, the primary End of Woodlands Christian is to “graduate Christ-centered students inspired to fulfill God’s purpose for their lives as leaders – spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially.” The Governance Board is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that our school is achieving this mission in the lives of students while prudently using the resources that God has provided. The Board uses a structured monitoring system to measure the school’s progress in achieving the Ends while maintaining sound financial stewardship and integrity in relationships with families, employees, donors, accreditation agencies, and the greater community. In addition, the Board consistently focuses on the future and the long-term vision of the school in order to continually direct Woodlands Christian to excel and remain true to its mission.

M E S S A G E from the Head of School Dear Families and Friends of The Woodlands Christian Academy, On behalf of our Governance Board, administration and faculty, we are pleased to present this annual report, summarizing highlights from the 2016-2017 school year. This was another exciting year at Woodlands Christian. We achieved record student enrollment and launched our next capital campaign to construct a 63,000 square foot high school building. Most importantly, we rejoiced daily in the maturation and triumphs of our wonderfully talented students. At Woodlands Christian, we strive to equip leaders – spiritually, academically, physically and socially – to fulfill God’s purpose for each of their lives. Through His transforming power, we believe that students can find their unique gifts and talents and reach their highest potential. Thus, we offer a rigorous Christian college-preparatory curriculum taught by an engaging faculty that delivers the personal mentoring and encouragement necessary to help our students succeed and develop a love of learning. Whether in the classroom, at an athletic competition or on the mission field, we challenge our students to become servant-leaders for Christ, capable of making an eternal impact for His kingdom. Heidi Saenz was named Teacher of the Year by The Rotary Club of The Woodlands.
Duke TIP Scholars Duke Talent Identification Program - Students in grades four and seven with strong intellectual capabilities may participate in the Duke TIP if they achieve a qualifying score at or above the 95th percentile on a recent grade-level standardized test such as the Terra Nova. Participants in the Duke TIP have the opportunity to take entrance/placement exams not typically taken by students their age (ex. Explore, PSAT, SAT, ACT) and have access to unique resources developed by experts in the field of gifted education. This year, The Woodlands Christian Academy had 34 students accepted into the Duke TIP; seventh grader, Stuart York, received state recognition.

Warrior Leagues were introduced in the 2016-2017 school year to provide lower school students with the opportunity to develop skills in football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball.

SOCIALLY
For six years, Woodlands Christian faculty has led a mission team to Ecuador. Partnering with a local church, Kairos, 17 high school Warriors and their leaders hauled rocks, boulders and sand, mixed 30 bags of cement by hand and unloaded 800 concrete blocks to construct a new classroom for a local village. After four days of intense labor, the team took time to bond with their new friends, building relationships by playing relay games, volleyball, basketball, and swimming. The mission team led VBS sessions, two gave testimonies, four were baptized by Mr. Marez, and Coach Earle preached during “Family Day” at Kairos church while Mrs. Saenz translated his message. Students continued their trip with rope courses and a climbing wall, and a visit to the Mitad del Mundo (center of the world) museum, where they observed amazing experiments on the equator. At their final stop, a ministry camp area called Hacienda El Refugio, they spent hours in individual prayer, journaling and listening to God’s direction to identify the spiritual fruit they would bear in their individual lives. TAPPS Band Solo and Ensemble Competition at Houston Baptist University Woodlands Christian musicians received eleven I-Superior Ratings, and fourteen II-Excellent Ratings.
Music Theory Lower and middle school students developed their talents with a new elective, Piano Lab.
TAPPS State Art Competition Students received 1st and 5th place in drawing and honorable mention for printmaking.
ACSI Regional Art Competition Lower and middle school students earned four 1st Place, four 2nd Place, and two 3rd Place honors, along with eight Excellent, and four Good Ratings. ACSI Speech Meet First through sixth graders were honored with nine 1st Place, six 2nd Place, and five 5th Place ribbons. Upper School science teachers and Head of School toured ExxonMobil
ACSI Math Olympics Third through eighth grade students competed, all earned ribbons as follows: 1st Place, two 2nd Place, three Superior, fourteen Excellent, and seven Good.
World Scholar’s Cup is a global academic competition where students compete in four events covering six subjects united by an overarching theme. The four competition areas—collaborative writing, multiple choice challenge, team debate, and Scholar’s Bowl (a game show event)—allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the theme by requiring them to think critically and act collaboratively. Melissa Birdwell, Maddie Ganley, and Mike Singh traveled to Athens, Greece to compete in the global round against more than 200 teams comprised of more than 700 students and representing 42 countries. Our students earned several team and individual awards. Additionally, they earned a spot at the Tournament of Champions at Yale in November 2017. As a team, they were awarded as follows: Debate - 15th place, Writing - 15th place, Scholar’s Challenge - 28th place, Region (Americas & Australia) - 8th place, Overall - 44th place

Debate team participated in the TAPPS state academic competition in Waco, Texas. In the extemporaneous speaking category, sophomores Leigh Ann Williams and Rio Robertson advanced to the semi-finals where Robertson was awarded fifth place. Robertson and Williams competed in the Lincoln-Douglas debate category. Other students representing Woodlands Christian were Maddie Ganley (10th grade, original oratory) and Maggie Karin (9th grade, poetry).
The Woodlands Christian Academy has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2016 - 2018. The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments. In addition, 100% of Woodlands Christian faculty have completed the requirements to be recognized by Apple as Apple Teachers.

The Woodlands Christian Academy Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) fosters relationships to enhance fellowship and community within our school among families, teachers, staff, and administration. PTF offers support for various needs of teachers in the classroom, promotes school spirit, and nurtures one another in Jesus Christ. This year, PTF hosted Warrior Nation Night, back-to school grade level parent coffees, two Bible studies for our moms, grade level parties, social events, service project opportunities, and our annual Lower School End of Year Carnival! In addition, PTF coordinated Moms-In-Prayer, teacher birthday treats, snacks and goodies for teachers’ lounges, grade level homecoming festivities, Prayer Pals, The Woodlands Christian Book Fair, Worthy Servants participation, Operation Christmas Child, teacher appreciation luncheon, and snacks during Terra Nova testing week. The Woodlands Christian Warrior Boosters exists to support the Warrior athletic programs and promote school spirit. This year, Warrior Boosters set a record with 120 members, raised over $146,000 through membership and its annual golf tournament and assisted Warrior athletics with high school football and baseball jerseys, boys’ track uniforms, middle school soccer uniforms, middle school football equipment, volleyball and weight room equipment, training room remodel, including furniture and supplies, softball field fence, grass for baseball field, sound equipment for SLC gym, storage racks for the cage room, clocks for the locker room in the SLC, and buses for both middle school and high school football away games.

For the 2016-2017 year, Woodland Christian suspended the annual Warrior Fund. Instead of 100% participation in the Warrior Fund, the school encouraged families to meet with the Head of School to learn about the need and plans for a new high school building. Woodlands Christian’s growing enrollment is consistent with the long-term goal of steadily expanding the ministry to serve approximately 950 students, representing four classes per grade, a goal that Woodlands Christian plans to reach within the next 10 years. The administration believes that this target enrollment will preserve the intimate size that is vital to a caring educational community where students and faculty know each other well, while at the same time providing the economies of scale needed to optimize the school’s academic and extracurricular programs at a reasonable cost. As the school’s enrollment increases, Woodlands Christian will be able to further increase the breadth of the academic course offerings and the size and caliber of the athletic and fine arts programs. The Joshua Academic Center was designed to be the permanent home for the lower school. Initially and in order to provide more students with permanent classrooms, it accommodated lower school students on the first floor and middle school students on the second floor. As the lower school grew and expanded within this building, the administration reserved temporary buildings to be used by middle school students in phases until the completion of a high school building enabled them to exclusively occupy the Nehemiah Academic Center, currently the home of the high school. The demand for lower and middle school grew faster than anticipated, and we have now occupied every classroom on the campus in both permanent and temporary buildings. The leadership of Woodlands Christian has consistently and conservatively deferred commencement of any capital campaign until any related debt from the previous campaign has been fully repaid from outstanding pledges. Fortunately, the construction loan for the Joshua Academic Center was fully repaid in December 2015. Given the urgency to expand the capacity and eliminate more of the aging modular buildings that have been utilized on the campus for the past 19 years, we are immediately starting the next capital campaign for a state-of-the-art high school building.

Architects have preliminarily designed a new 63,612 square foot, three-story high school building, which will be constructed to the west of the Daniel Student Life Center, replacing at least six modular buildings. This classroom building will be large enough to accommodate all high school students projected in the long-term strategic plan and will offer collegiate-quality facilities. The initial design includes 15 classrooms, three science labs, two conference rooms, multiple student gathering areas, high school administrative offices, and a lecture/performance hall with a versatile stage and tiered seating for an audience of 206. Since it will cost significantly less to include a third floor now, one will be built but remain unfinished and flexible to accommodate future needs (classrooms, multi-media center, offices, etc.) and allow preservation of the green space on the campus. Design and construction of the high school building is estimated at $7,950,000. Other costs include interest on a construction loan (if needed), infrastructure, contingencies, and other miscellaneous expenses associated with the project and campaign. In order to keep project costs reasonable, furniture, fixtures and equipment will be funded through the school’s general operating fund and annual auction. Construction finance has been secured through Woodforest Bank. Groundbreaking will be contingent on progress in the capital campaign to ensure that the school has sufficient funds pledged and/or received to cover the costs, so that no long-term debt will be incurred as a result of this project. As of July 2017, Woodlands Christian has secured approximately 60% of the costs in gifts and pledges.
