A Message from J.J. Hollie A Legacy of Leadership
The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1978 as a membership organization to drive business growth. Since that time, the Chamber has focused on delivering value for our members and making The Woodlands area a world-class place to live and work.
From launching successful programs like Education for Tomorrow Alliance and The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership to representing thousands of companies from all major industries, the Chamber has been an integral part of The Woodlands area community since its inception. Through various programs and teams of devoted volunteers, the Chamber continues to move our region forward in every facet of the community: workforce, growth and business advocacy. And every new year brings a fresh dynamic to the Chamber with the appointment of some new board members, while saying goodbye to a few who have given their time and leadership for a number of years. We are pleased to announce Jeff Garrett (Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP) as the chair of the 2019-2020 board of directors and Linda Nelson (Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center) as the vice chair. Additionally, the board will welcome seven new members in September, to serve three-year terms: Dan Altom (The Woodlands Young Learners Academy), Tanya Bryan (Marsh & McLennan Agency), Jay Dreibelbis (Woodforest National Bank), Kevin Kastor (Consolidated Communications), Bob Milner (TerBo Performance Inc.), Jim Parisi (CHI St. Luke’s Health - The Woodlands Hospital), and Sarah Rhea (Leadership Montgomery County). On behalf of the Chamber and its members, I would also express thanks for dedicated service to our current Chair Stuart Lapp (Stibbs & Co., P.C. Attorneys), along with five board members whose terms expire in September: Dr. Curtis Null (Conroe Independent School District), Debbie Sukin (Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital), Greg Usher (Cypressbrook Company), Kristy Villarreal (Urban Realty Group) and Tim Welbes (The Woodlands Development Company / A Howard Hughes Corporation). Post-event surveys were sent to 2018 attendees which revealed that participants wanted more team building activities along with professional development sessions for 2019. Based off those responses, a session was held at Baylor University this year where attendees went to a class at the university’s leadership academy. Lastly, additional sessions centered around the Chamber’s rebranding efforts, annual membership survey results and discussion around the future of the Chamber and its annual goals. “Overall, it was a great success with 45 of our leaders in attendance. We are already beginning to plan for next year and look forward to growing and enhancing the next retreat,” Meagen said. The Chamber will announce the 2020 leadership retreat this fall. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP Jeff Garrett serves as an assistant general counsel at Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP located in The Woodlands. He joined Chevron in 2002 and has served in several commercial and intellectual property legal positions. He has handled many international commercial and technological transactions as he leads currently leads the intellectual property group. Jeff was born in Bryan, TX. He received and master’s degree in engineering from Texas A7M and a law degree from South Texas College of Law. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, a registered patent attorney of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and a registered Professional Engineer. Jeff has previously served as vice president of economic development for The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a board member of the Education for Tomorrow Alliance, The Woodlands Bar Association, a Pacesetter Chairman for the United Way of Montgomery County, a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, and a Master of the Bench member of Nancy Atlas Intellectual Property Inn of Court. In addition, he has served on college recruiting teams and acted as a mentor for Chevron Phillips Chemical’s leadership development program.
Dan Altom grew up in the wild west of Abilene, TX but arrived in The Woodlands area soon after graduating from Texas A&M in 1996 with a degree in finance. After working at a couple of small busi-nesses performing business valuations and financial assessments, his entrepreneurship caught up to him when he and his business partner, Debbie Kaschik, founded The Woodlands Young Learners Academy in 2007. Through growth, expansion, and acquisitions, The Woodlands Young Learners Academy now has four fantastic preschool academies and clinic services for children with autism. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce was one of the first organizations Dan joined and remains a big part of his community involvement, as well as the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce and Montgomery County Youth Services. Dan and his wife, Leah, live in Magnolia with their teenage daughter and feisty old dog.
TANYA BRYAN Marsh and McLennan Agency Tanya Bryan began her career as an independent insurance agent, specializing in employee health and benefits, in 2009. She accepted a position in house with Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) in 2016 and, most recently, was promoted to the role of associate director of sales over MMA’s Houston sales team for business insurance of employee
Jeff’s hobbies include traveling, many outdoor activities, and attending Texas A&M football games. He and his wife, Debra, are members of The Woodlands United Methodist Church and are the proud parents of two children.
LINDA NELSON, 2019-20 VICE CHAIR Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center Since 1997, Linda Nelson has been with Memorial Herman The Woodlands Medical Center. She currently serves as the business development and regional marketing director. Linda completed her undergraduate degree in business at West Virginia Wesleyan College and her MB at Texas Women’s University. Wanting to stay involved in the community that she calls home, Linda has been active in her role at The Woodlands Area Chamber- including chairing the Business Advocacy Council, Health Care Committee, the Transportation Education Council, additionally Linda is an active member of the Leadership Montgomery County (LMC), The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber, EDP, and the Conroe ISD Site Based Committee. She has earned many recognitions, including: Hometown Hero, IRONMAN Captain of the Year, LMC Distinguished Alumnus Award, The Woodlands Area Chamber Citizen of the Year, The Woodlands Area Chamber Chairman’s Award, and the Montgomery County Women’s Council on Organizations’ Women of Distinction. 6 woodlandschamber.org JULY 2019

Tanya has served on many teams within The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce including: Community Relations, Diplomats, Networking Breakfast, Chamber Seminar, and the Annual Awards Luncheon Team, as well as, the Business Advocacy Council and the Transportation Education Council. Additionally, she is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery County. Tanya is not only dedicated to her career but has a passion for serving our community through her involvement with local non-profit organizations. Her top priorities include maintaining core principles of hard work, honesty, and integrity in all aspects of life.
JAY DREIBELBIS Woodforest National Bank James “Jay” D. Dreibelbis was born and raised in San Juan, TX. He attended Texas A&M where he received his undergraduate degree in 1980. Jay joined American Bank in Conroe, TX as its president in 1986, and served in that capacity until American Bank became part of the First National Bank Texas, where he became regional president overseeing the East Texas Region. He was responsible for the development and implementation of the first in-store branch for the First National Bank in Willis, TX in 1994. Jay assumed the role of president of the First Community Bancshares, INC. (FCBI) in 2000.
While with FCBI, Jay also held the titles of chairman of the board, chief executive officer, president of the First National Bank Texas, and vice chairman of the board of Fort Hood National Bank. During Jay’s tenure at First National Bank and Fort Hood National Bank, these organizations were recognized by the Independent Consumer Bankers Association for outstanding ROA and ROE performance, and Fort Hood National Bank was recognized as the Department of Defense’s Military Bank of the Year. Under Jay’s leadership, FCBI also grew its in-store bank operations to over 200 locations across Texas. In February 2007, Jay joined Woodforest National Bank as chief executive officer of its newly acquired institution, Woodforest Bank, F.S.B. He was named president and chief executive officer of WNB in 2018. Jay is a dedicated father, husband, and outdoorsman. Jay has been a member of the board of directors of the Texas Banker Association, he served on the advisory board for the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking at Sam Houston State University, was a member of the board of directors of Killeen Independent School District Education Foundation, was a chairman and member of the United Way Board of Directors, member of the Economic Development Foundation Board and a volunteer at Texas Children’s Hospital. Jay currently serves on the board of directors for Woodforest National Bank, the Conroe Economic Development Council, LiftFund, and Payrailz.
KEVIN KASTOR Consolidated Communications Kevin Kastor is the director of government affairs for Consolidated Communications, a mid-sized telecommunications company. Kevin has been in the telecommunication industry for more than 20 years. He is on the boards of directors of Leadership Montgomery County, as well as industry trade associations in Kansas, Texas, and Washington. Kevin has a master’s degree in economics from Texas A&M and a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Baylor University. He lives in The Woodlands with his wife D’Aun and their two children.
BOB MILNER TerBo Performance Inc. Bob Milner is a serial entrepreneur, speaker, and professor who focuses on impact. He and his wife, Teresa, live in The Woodlands with their five rescue dogs. They have four children and two grandchildren. Bob is a graduate of the Accenture Executive Leadership Development Academy and the Thayer Executive Leadership Development Program at West Point Military Academy. Additionally, he is a decorated veteran who served seven years in the USAF and is the recipient of the 2017 VEL Institute Legacy Award for his service and commitment to his fellow veterans. Bob has a bachelor’s degree in business, a MBA, and is working towards a doctorate in organizational development and executive leadership. A finalist for the 2017 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Bob is an active philanthropic leader in Montgomery County with a focus on impacting future entrepreneur and growing his entrepreneurial footprint. Along with being the CEO of TerBo Consulting Inc. and MRH Auto Enterprise LLC., he is an assistant professor of entrepreneurship at Sam Houston State University, an advisor to many non-profit organizations on strategy, employee engagement, and leadership development. Bob currently serves on the board of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the Memorial Herman-The Woodlands Executive Leadership Advisory Council, Interfaith The Woodlands Executive Advisory Council, VEL, The
Woodlands Waterway Arts Council, the Insperity Golf Charity, and the Montgomery County Crime Stoppers. He is a past board member of The Woodlands Economic Development Partnership, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Women’s Shelter of Long Beach. Additionally, Bob is the 2018 St. Jude Children’s Hospital Lifetime Achievement Honor recipient for his support and contributions to help fight child diseases.
JIM PARISI CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands Hospital With more than 30 years of healthcare experience, Jim Parisi was appointed president of CHI St. Luke’s Health-The Woodlands, Lakeside, and Springwoods Village Hospital in 2018. Jim, a leader with more than 30 years of health care experience, brings to the organization an accomplished, established career as an administer committed to growth and excellence across a balanced scoreboard. Jim has served as chief executive officer, chief operating officer, vice president, and chief nursing officer at Memorial Hermann. Jim helped build a culture of safety, improve communication, nurse and physician relationships, and physician satisfaction. Under Jim’s leadership, the hospital received the Quality Texas Foundation’s 2017 Award for Performance Excellence and attend a top two percent patient safety score from Truven. Furthermore, the facility was one of only 72 hospitals in the United States to achieve Leapfrog straight A’s since 2012 and was named one of Becker’s Top 49 Hospitals. Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Jim was vice president - Trauma for the East Texas Regional Healthcare System (ETMC) in Tyler, TX and was the director for Trauma Services at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, TX. Jim holds a master’s of business administration and a bachelor’s of science in nursing from the University of Texas, additionally he has an associate’s degree in applied science and nursing from Central Texas University. Jim currently serves on the board for Quality Texas Foundation, the Montgomery County American Heart Association, The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership, and Interfaith of The Woodlands. He is a past member of the Katy Chamber of Commerce, Katy’s Children’s Discovery Museum, and as served on the Governor’s Emergency and Trauma Advisory Committee, as well aa, treasurer on the Executive Board of the Texas EMS Trauma & Acute Care Facility.
SARAH RHEA Leadership Montgomery County Sarah has a bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations from Kentucky Wesleyan College and a master’s degree in mass communication form Southwest Texas State University. She is the executive director of Leadership Montgomery County (LMC). She is a graduate of the LMC Class of 2007 and served on the LMC Board of Directors. Sarah is dedicated to serving the community and had been a board member, and vice president, of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and has served as a team leader for The Woodlands Area Chamber’s Taste of the Town event, Community Relations Team, Men Who Cook event, and the Golf Classic event. She was honored as The Woodlands Area Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year in 2008. Furthermore, Sarah has served on The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, Cure PH, and The Woodlands CrawPHish Festival committees for many years. Currently, Sarah serves as president of the Executive Women’s Alliance, a mentor for the Women of Vision program at Conroe High School. She also serves on the ATHENA Leadership Award committee at the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce and on the National Conference Marketing Team for the Association of Leadership Program. 7

Leadership Montgomery County’s
Class of 2019 Graduates Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) recently celebrated the graduation of the LMC Class of 2019 at their Graduation Celebration Luncheon presented by Consolidated Communications. With more than 400 people in attendance, the luncheon highlighted the accomplishments of the current LMC Class over the past year and also celebrated the 2019 LMC Distinguished Alumnus and 2019 LMC Honorary Alumnus. The 44-member class of business and community leaders spent the past nine months learning about the inner workings of the county through monthly education sessions, completed a leadership development series, and worked together to give back through their class project. Topics for the monthly education sessions included Economic Development, Education, Government, Infrastructure, Public Safety, Healthcare, Serving Our Community, and Leadership Development. The luncheon also highlighted and honored the session directors who planned each of these sessions. The Leadership Series, sponsored by Repsol and presented by Chad Patterson & Associates, covered the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. LMC alumni led the class in small groups to discuss the book and allow class members to learn from each other’s experiences and grow in their leadership development. The class left their mark on Montgomery County through their Class Project benefiting Angel Reach. The class worked together to help rebuild a resale furniture store for Angel Reach, called Angels Loft. The class raised more than $14,000 in cash donations and even more in in-kind donations for the project. The class renovated the space, created a business plan, created a human resources manual, implemented a store pricing system, and developed marketing and social media campaigns. “This class has certainly left their mark on Montgomery County and will only continue to do so for years to come. They are a wonderful group of leaders who care greatly about this community,” said LMC Executive Director Sarah Rhea. “They have gained a greater understanding our county, grown in their leadership development, and formed lasting relationships with other community leaders. The event also honored Barry Blanton as the 2019 LMC Distinguished Alumnus. Blanton, of Blanton Advisors, was honored for his dedication to the community and to Leadership Montgomery County. Blanton has chaired both the United Way and the South Montgomery County YMCA. In 2010, he was honored as a Hometown Hero by Interfaith of The Woodlands. He helped bring Light the Night to Montgomery County and is an avid supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Education for Tomorrow Alliance Trivia Night Set for August 22

“Barry is an incredible leader who lends his time and talents to many community organizations,” said LMC Chairman of the Board Melissa Young. “He leads with integrity and inspires teamwork, creativity, and dedication. We are pleased to honor him as our 2019 Distinguished Alumnus.” Leadership Montgomery County also honored Frankie Alexander as the 2019 Honorary Alumnus. Alexander served as president of LMC for 15 years and laid the foundation for a strong, comprehensive leadership program. “LMC would not be what it is today without Frankie Alexander,” said Rhea. “Her dedication to this organization and her incredible work as a leader in our community made her a perfect fit for Honorary Alumnus. Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) will be hosting the seventh annual Trivia Night and Silent Auction presented by Consolidated Communications on Thursday, August 22 at the Sts. Simon & Jude Event Center in The Woodlands. All are invited to an evening of brain-busting fun and friendly competition where guests will be challenged with trivia ranging from biology to pop culture in pursuit of the Smarties Cup. Each team of up to ten will attempt to demonstrate their mastery of trivial knowledge to win prizes and bragging rights. All proceeds support local K-12 students through EfTA’s educational enrichment programs. Doors open at 6:00 pm and trivia begins at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person in advance and $85 on the day of the event. Ticket prices include

SHARES INSIGHT INTO TAX ABATEMENTS The Business Advocacy Council held a meeting about Montgomery County Tax Abatements on Friday, May 17. Montgomery County Tax Assessor Tammy McRae and Assistant County Attorney B.D. Griffin shared information about the process of tax abatements and revisions to the program. The implemented changes will help boost the attraction of new businesses to seek interest in the county. McRae gave insight into the levels in which a tax abatement is offered for projects and the incentives in remaining competitive. In addition, Griffin explained his role as assistant county attorney and how he works with McRae to ensure the guidelines are followed with tax abatement agreements.
ABOUT THE BUSINESS ADVOCACY COUNCIL The Business Advocacy Council facilitates discussion and action with key elected officials and policy leaders in making a significant impact for area businesses and their employees. MONTGOMERY COUNTY WOMEN’S CENTER For more than three decades, the Montgomery County Women’s Center has provided a 24-hour hotline, safe shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy and legal services to survivors of family violence, sexual assault and stalking. Throughout May, the Community Relations Team collected donations such as gift cards, under garments, t-shirts, towels, pillows, flip flops and socks to assist the Women’s Center in meeting the basic needs of their clients. Montgomery County Women’s Shelter Volunteer Program Manager Siomara Rodriguez accepted the donations with extreme gratitude. The Habitat for Humanity MCTX Building Hope Gala was held May 4 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Celebrating Habitat’s 30th anniversary, it was presented by LGI Homes for the 3rd consecutive year. This summer Community Assistance Center is ensuring our community of kids are receiving nourishment by providing summer stock bags on Fridays through August 16 filled with kid friendly meals, snacks and fruit. It was all about the kids in need as the 3rd annual “Shelter for Shelter” event presented by Richmond Realty Group RE/MAX The Woodlands & Spring successfully raised $50,00 to benefit the YES to YOUTH (Montgomery County Youth Services) homeless shelter, bringing the total raised over the last three years to $150,000. The Montgomery County Women’s Council of Organizations (MCWCO) had its 29th annual Women of Distinction luncheon on Friday, May 3, 2019 and celebrated in a big way by honoring 29 extraordinary volunteers from 29 nonprofits in Montgomery County! The luncheon including a special speaking presentation from Gigi Woodruff of YMCA of the USA as well as owner of Gigi Woodruff & Associates where she uplifted attendees with a motivational speech
Since joining the Chamber, The Treehouse Center has connected with wonderful members that want to help the shelter and bring hope to the girls that live here. Kati Krouse (Bears Etc.) is doing a presentation on exotic wildlife, Rita Wiltz (Children’s Books on Wheels) has enrolled all the girls into Camp Noah as campers or counselors to teach resiliency skills, and Carol Gooch is involving MCABW ladies to teach empowerment and hope. Thank you, Chamber! The Treehouse Center is excited to be part of this dynamic, caring organization!
EDUCATION
Commencement for the 112 members of The John Cooper School Class of 2019 on May 24 was steeped in tradition, not only the processional to “Pomp and Circumstance,” but others that distinguish a Cooper graduation. This event marked the 30th anniversary of The John Cooper School and the 26th class to graduate. Cooper’s alumni now numbers 1,896. Lone Star College-Houston North has received approval and accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to offer students greater access to affordable education close to home. Dr. Quentin Wright has been named founding president of LSC-Houston North and will assume his duties June 15, 2019. Dr. Wright, was selected after a national search and he “[looks] forward to continuing the mission of providing affordable education to the community.” Legacy Preparatory Christian Academy celebrated the graduation of its senior class on Friday, May 17, 2019. This memorable event recognized the graduation of 39 outstanding senior students. Founded in 2005, Legacy Prep is a Christ-centered, university style school that creates college-worthy, character witnesses for Christ.
