CELEBRATING YEARS OF LEADERSHIP AND GROWTH When The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce started operations, the community’s first supermarket Jamail’s opened in The Wharf, now the Grogan’s Mill Village Center, and George Mitchell began construction on the corporate headquarters for Mitchell Energy and Development. Within five years, the total investment in The Woodlands reached $1 billion and business was booming. As the community grew during the next four decades, the chamber grew with it. The chamber will celebrate this legacy Saturday, August 18, with its 40th Anniversary Chairman’s Ball themed “Star Wars: May The Force Be With You and Beyond.” This black-tie celebration, set to begin at 6 p.m. at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, will include a tribute to outgoing Chairman of the Board Frank Holmes of Sam Houston State University. Since its inception in 1978, 40 different board chairs have led the chamber. Progress over the years has been achieved through the collaborative efforts of these individuals among many others. As we celebrate the momentum and energy that’s carrying us into our next four decades, we thank all of our past chairs for investing in the chamber and helping to create the lifestyle and sense of community we enjoy today. The Woodlands Area Chamber will continue to promote business prosperity and quality of life for people who live here and work here. In addition to the Chairman’s Ball, we will host events throughout the year to celebrate our successes with our 1,500-plus members and the community-at-large. As one of Houston region’s largest business organizations, we are proud of what we’ve accomplished. Every one of our past board chairs has been a key contributor to the local economy and to the lives of those who make The Woodlands area their home. We hope you will join us at our 40th Anniversary Chairman’s Ball on August 18, and we look forward to partnering with you for the next 40 years and beyond. For more information about the chamber or the Chairman’s Ball, visit woodlandschamber.org.

WHAT IS ADVOCACY? J Advocacy is: providing educational opportunities around public policy; while also supporting causes and issues in the state and national legislature. J Advocacy is not: a political action committee (PAC) for supporting candidates. The Chamber’s Business Advocacy Council (BAC) is the place to learn about and discuss causes and issues that matter to your business and our community. Meetings include informational briefings from guest speakers and structured discussion with fellow members. Every Chamber member is eligible and encouraged to participate in the monthly BAC meetings. WHAT ARE THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES? J The legislative priorities are: a clear guideline of our membership’s positions on issues affecting the business community that determines the functions of the Business Advocacy Council. J The legislative priorities are not: a support of candidates or a political party. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to promoting a healthy, prosperous and competitive business environment in the South Montgomery County region. Summer in The Woodlands

S

ummer months in The Woodlands offer a wide variety of recreational activities and entertainment for residents and visitors alike. The dilemma is deciding among all the options. Those of us who live here are very fortunate.

You can take a morning walk on the miles of hike and bike trails, cool off in the afternoon at the award-winning Rob Fleming Aquatic Center, enjoy a wonderful meal at one of your favorite restaurants, and end the day on the hill of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. It is no wonder The Woodlands is considered one of the top ten best cities to live in America. Travel + Leisure featured our community in its “Coolest Suburbs Worth a Visit” and CitySearch Houston named The Woodlands the “Best Weekend Getaway.” While all these amenities are great for spending leisure time, they also contribute to the economic prosperity of the community. Outdoor recreation is big business. Cities and towns across America are investing in outdoor recreation and open spaces as they have proven to contribute to a high quality of life while attracting and sustaining businesses and families.

CHAMBER NEWS

Nationally, $646 billion is spent each year on outdoor recreation supporting 6.1 million direct jobs and creating $80 billion in federal,

state, and local tax revenue. The No. 1 community amenity consistently sought by prospective homeowners is a trail infrastructure. Open spaces such as parks and recreation areas can have a positive effect on nearby residential property values. It appears that those trails are “paved with gold.” Frank Holmes With almost 7,800 acres of green space, 130 neighborhood parks, 205 miles of hike and bike trails, a 200-acre lake, and a number of signature golf courses, The Woodlands provides an environment that fosters the best in family life, career opportunities, and community involvement. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of The Woodlands experience and the lifestyle it offers. You deserve it.

Member Spotlight SHOWHOMES OF THE WOODLANDS: DECORATING IS FOR LIVING. STAGING IS FOR SELLING! In the current real estate market, home staging is no longer optional, it’s absolutely necessary! According to the National Association of Realtors, 95% of potential buyers look at houses online before they go to see them in person. So, when I decided Laura Landesman to open Showhomes of The Woodlands, I had one goal in mind: help make the process of selling a home easier and faster for sellers, helping sustain the great value property values in the area, and help potential buyers be able to envision themselves making a house in The Woodlands their future home. Here at Showhomes, we specialize in The Woodlands and surrounding areas, offering a full suite of home staging services for both occupied and vacant properties.

know everything they need to do to make their occupied homes look great for buyers. And if they need us to just do it for them, we offer Home Makeovers where our team will come in and redesign the home with selling in mind, using the homeowners’ own furniture and décor. We also do Home Updates for paint, carpet, and flooring, to make homes move-in ready. And Showhomes’ signature service is Home Manager Staging, which is a unique service that provides security, savings, and peace of mind by placing a Home Manager to care for a client’s home 24/7 while keeping it show-ready. While we’re known for offering a “one-stop-shop” for your home staging needs, we really pride ourselves on having our finger on the pulse of what buyers are looking for, since we, like our clients, proudly live in The Woodlands ourselves. As a young business in the community, just nearing four years since we first opened our doors to the public, being a part of The Woodlands Chamber

Our services include Vacant Staging, Staging Consultations, Home Makeovers, Home Updates, and Home Manager Staging. For Vacant Staging, we bring in our own inventory of furniture and décor to take the cold edge off of a vacant house and give buyers a glimpse of what their dream home might look like. Our Staging Consultations are two-hour “walk & talk” sessions to let homeowners

of Commerce has played a vital role in helping strengthen our presence in the community, even introducing us to some of our very first clients. Truly not a day goes by where we aren’t reminded of the power of networking and building trustworthy, meaningful relationships, with both potential clients and other businesses in The Woodlands area.

business after hours / ROBARD’S STEAKHOUSE More than 150 The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce members gathered May 8 at the recently redesigned Robard’s Steakhouse for an exclusive Business After Hours event. Inspired by the original maverick Howard Robard Hughes Jr., the luxury boutique steakhouse has been reimagined for Texas tastemakers and a new generation of foodies. The new Robard’s redefines the classic American steakhouse with a menu that showcases sophisticated cuts of dry-aged beef, artisanal bread, fresh-catch seafood, creative desserts, and handcrafted garden-to-glass cocktails. The soirée was held on the gorgeous outdoor patio overlooking the 18th green of the stunning Panther Trail Golf Course. Delighted attendees indulged in Area Executive Chef David Morris’ culinary creations including seasoned scallops, local farm-greens, and timeless steakhouse favorites such as filet mignon and ribeye. “I am honored to be a part of such a monumental culinary moment for The Woodlands, which will change the traditional steakhouse experience for local residents and travelers,” Chef Morris said. “Howard Hughes was a truly inspiring individual and I enjoy channeling his spirit to bring a sense of adventure and curiosity to every meal at Robard’s.” Offering vintage luxury with a modern twist, the new Robard’s features an in-house butchery and smokehouse. Chef Morris and his team create a personal touch to each hand-selected steak, utilizing signature dry-aging techniques for each cut of USDA prime grade beef. The restaurant also demonstrates the farm-to-table philosophy, sourcing the freshest of everything – from the Gulf Coast and beyond. Signature menu items include “dock to door in 24” seafood, Prime Certified Angus Beef, 50-day, dry-aged Texas Waygu, specialty lettuces hydro-grown by Sustainable Harvesters in Hockley, Texas and coming this fall, housemade honey from the 100,000 resident bees on the property.

Wendi Gelfound (The Howard Hughes Corporation Hospitality Division) with Business After Hours Team Leaders Kathy Rifaat (Crisis Assistance Center) and Elaine Smith (Berryhill Baja Grill)

Lovers of great food cannot miss Sunday Brunch at Robard’s, which boasts a culinary adventure of global influences. The recently launched Market Brunch menu includes a free-flowing mimosa, Bloody Mary bar, fresh seafood, ceviche and omelette stations, cured and smoked meats, cheeses, specialty pastries, salads, and a choice of Chef David’s Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Texas Sticky Bun French Toast, Lobster Truffle Mac & Cheese, as well as many other delectable brunch favorites.
