A MESSAGE FROM J.J. HOLLIE

A Great Place to Start, Move, or Engage in a Technology Business As we heard the great news about Hewlett Packard Enterprise moving to the area as well as Tesla and Oracle moving to Texas, we are excited to continue our work in encouraging a diverse economy through the Chamber’s Innovation Initiative. The Houston region, and The Woodlands in particular, is fortunate to have strong segments of the economy that include healthcare and financial services. And even with crude oil prices suffering, the Oil and Gas sector continues to be a major employer in the area and will be in the future as we transition to clean energy to maintain Houston’s reputation as the Energy Capital of the World. We do feel that further diversification is necessary to protect the region’s economy from the unavoidable economic swings in various sectors and encouraging growth in innovation will be a very important piece of the puzzle. For us to support growth, we need 3 things

2

as a foundation. The first is a tech-savvy workforce and I am proud to say that our local higher education institutions such as Sam Houston State University and Lone Star College are meeting that challenge head on. The second is a tech-friendly capital structure that understands and values the technology economy. And the third is a worldwide marketing strategy for the area that highlights us as a great place to start, move, or engage in a technology business. As we move into 2021, we will continue to lend our voices to grow the innovation economy. As we have done for the past two years, we look forward to hosting an Innovation Summit with strategic partners such as the US Chamber of Commerce, Houston Business Journal, ION, and Houston Exponential to discuss important issues around how we grow this sector.

for Preparing Your Business for 2021

1

By: Jeff Newkirk, Founder & CEO, Understandable Solutions

Have a plan. You should have a plan for your business that includes monthly, quarterly, and annual goals. You should also include strategies for achieving your goals. Goals and strategies should align with your mission, vision, and core values for the business.

2

Conduct a financial review and develop your budget for 2021. Have a meeting with your accountant for tax planning. Take a closer look at your big expense items, such as labor, rent or loan payments. Your landlord and banker may be willing to discuss refinancing or new lease rates. Try to negotiate more favorable terms for 2021.

3 4 5 6

Dissect your gross revenues. Review the products/services that sold the most and the least. Also review pricing. Determine if any updates in prices are in order. Update your marketing plan, including your social media presence, website, and funnel campaigns.

Conduct an inventory, this includes all supplies used in manufacturing, as well as those needed to provide any services. Review your suppliers/vendors. Negotiate pricing.

8

7

Review your staffing needs, including any increases or decrease for 2021. Make sure all employees have received evaluations and updated job descriptions.

8 9 10

Review your risk management plan, including liability insurance, as well as errors and omissions insurance (if applicable). Evaluate your community outreach. Do what you can to positively impact your community.

Evaluate your information technology needs, including any upgrades in software and hardware. Also, eliminate any subscriptions for applications not used during the year. Make sure all critical information is secure and backed up.

SCI://TECH 2021 is going virtual and Going Viral!

E

ducation for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA), Conroe ISD, and area private schools will be kicking off the 31st Annual SCI://TECH Exposition, themed Going Viral, on January 15. SCI://TECH, a series of 13 STEM events that engages thousands of K-12 students each year, will be a mix of virtual and live socially distanced activities in 2021.

“As one might expect, SCI://TECH activities will look different this year,” shared EfTA President Monica Bomkamp Enia. “In several cases, we are taking events to students on their campuses instead of offering larger events where students and spectators come together. In addition, our SCI://TECH planning team is building in safety protocols, and offering virtual volunteer opportunities so that students can still get feedback from professionals, which is always a key part of student learning. Volunteers will still play a critical role in SCI://TECH’s success.” SCI://TECH activities engage hundreds of volunteers from the business community in support of education. Once again, a highlight will be the Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. Senior High and Entergy Junior High Science Fairs where students compete for cash prizes and qualify to participate in the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston. All science fair activities will be virtual, giving volunteers the opportunity to review and rank student projects from their own home or office computer. Volunteers are needed to help judge projects January 15 – 22. No experience is needed, and training will be provided. To learn more or to register as a volunteer, visit efta-us.org/scitech. EDUCATION FOR TOMORROW ALLIANCE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating education and community partnerships that advance student success. With innovative programs focused on career, leadership, and STEM preparation, EfTA is the portal through which business leaders can access and strengthen local education.

ADVERTORIAL

The program focuses on support for low-income, first-timein-college students, and students with disabilities. Students must apply program and meet certain criteria to be accepted into the program. Lone Star College-Montgomery expects to recruit 140 students into the first AIM cohort.

Happy New Year

The Fall 2020 semester has come to a successful conclusion, with over 15,000 students completing online, faceto-face, and hybrid classes. Despite the challenges of studying during a pandemic, our students, faculty, and staff proved they were “Maverick Strong.” With the Spring 2021 semester just around the corner, Lone Star College is poised to offer new financial and academic support to students, ensuring that they will maintain their momentum toward graduation and transfer.

from Maverick Country!

We are pleased to announce the Advancement Initiative for Mavericks, or AIM, program, providing personalized support services to students in need, helping them succeed in college and transfer to a 4-year university. Funded by a TRIO Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Lone Star College-Montgomery received $1.3 million dollars to create this new initiative. The AIM program will provide academic advising, financial aid literacy and support, career counseling, academic major exploration, transfer and admissions planning, mentoring opportunities, tutoring, and cultural enrichment opportunities. Funds from the grant will provide for a dedicated staff, technology support, and special events and services.

In addition to the Trio SSS award, LSC-Montgomery was awarded another Department of Education grant. The Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions grant will fund efforts to expand educational opportunities for Hispanic students through advising, academic support, career exploration, mentoring, and student life in a facility embedded in the community. Lone Star College has designated funds from the CARES Act for financial support for students affected by COVID. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, books, child care, and other education-related expenses. For more information, contact the advising team at MC.Advising@LoneStar.edu. In August, construction began on the new Maverick Student Services Building and Conference Center. The 58,440 squarefoot facility will house a state-of-the-art service center for the Student Services, Admissions, Advising, Counseling, and Financial Aid departments and a 3,000 square-foot meeting and conference center. The complex is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2021. As we reach the mid-point of our 25th anniversary year, we proudly to celebrate our past and look forward to a bright future.
