THE CHAMBER… PATHWAY TO OPPORTUNITY This month as we work on advocacy initiatives like our 2019 legislative priorities and election activities, we continue to offer the traditional events and programs that our Chamber members deserve — events that allow them to celebrate one another and to grow their business by connecting with customers and new markets. As the largest business association in the Houston region, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is more than 1,500 members strong. These members are people who believe in investing in our community. They are people who understand that a chamber membership is more than just a path to network or grow their individual business. It certainly is that. But it is much more. Every member adds strength to our ability to effect legislative change and foster economic growth. Seminar Teams — Chamber Seminar Team Needs You to Share Your Expertise
The Chamber Seminar Team is looking to our members to provide educational seminars. After completing their first series of seminars as part of the Small Business University, the team is looking to expand off the success of that series.
So how does the application process work? Members should visit the Chamber website at woodlandschamber.org/affinity-seminar-application for a copy of the guidelines and application. IMPORTANT GUIDLINES: • The seminar must be educational in content and not be used as a means to solicit your own products or services. • Contact Cyndi Alvarado, vice president of membership and Chamber Seminar Team staff liaison, to discuss the process. • Submit your completed application, signed guidelines, copy of your presentation and any materials you wish to distribute during your presentation.
The Chamber Seminar Team will review the materials. Following the review, the Chamber staff liaison will contact members about next steps. If the team approves the application, it then goes to the board of directors for final review. Once approved by the board, the staff liaison will contact the applicant to schedule a date for the seminar. Dates are normally scheduled 90 days after approval in order to properly market the seminar through social media, Chamber website and Member Memo email. The Chamber will add the event to its website and manage the reservations and reminders to registered attendees. Seminars give members increased visibility and provide additional networking opportunities among business affiliates. We encourage all members to share their knowledge! 9

OUT OF AFRICA 13TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION The Community Relations Team (CRT) will volunteer with The Pangea Network for its Out of Africa Gala on September 8, assisting with setup, manning stations, games and donations.
While the Chamber’s Putt, Pass & Chip Golf Championship takes place every October, the Golf Committee is hard at work planning event details months before the tournament.
The Pangea Network is an international organization dedicated to empowering and motivating individuals in Kenya and the United States with the knowledge, skills and an ongoing network of support in order to achieve their dreams and make positive, life-changing contributions to the communities in which they live.
If you enjoy event planning and have experience with golf tournaments (or simply like playing in them) this is the committee for you. Open to all Chamber members, the Golf Committee helps make important event decisions, secures teams and sponsorships, and ultimately represents the event as a whole.
The event will feature Will Forte, creator and star of “The Last Man on Earth,” and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member. Meals on Wheels Montgomery County (MOWMC) raised with roaring success more than $55,000 at their second annual Cigars Under The Stars fundraiser themed “Miami Nights” at The Westin at The Woodlands on May 24. Kicking off their 45th anniversary of service in Montgomery County, attendees helped Meals on Wheels achieve their evening’s goal of raising funds to add 45 seniors to service. mowmc.org.
Waste Connections raised a record breaking $1 million to benefit various local children’s charities at its 10th Annual Golf Classic for Kids on March 26. Among 11-plus other benefitting charities, HOPE: The Will Herndon Research Fund received $100,000. The Will Herndon Research Fund, a Woodlands based non-profit organization that raises money to fund research to find a treatment, and one day, a cure for juvenile Batten disease.
Radiation oncologist Peter B. Morgan, M.D. presents his painting gift – an original creation - to patient Michael Briggs at Houston Methodist Cancer Center at The Woodlands. Briggs is the Fire Chief of the PlantersvilleStoneham Volunteer Fire Department and had asked Dr. Morgan to paint a replica of a favorite print that had been displayed at his fire station but had become water damaged. Jamie Meche, founder, of Comforts of Home senior care has initiated a free senior luncheon every third Wednesday at the Crisis Assistance Center to offer opportunities for seniors to gather, hear from a speaker with resources specific to senior living, socialize, and participate in an activity. Diverse Issues in Higher Education has named Lone Star College a Top 10 Producer of associate degrees for minorities, ranking sixth nationally among all community colleges in the U.S. LSC also ranked fifth among the 1,100 community colleges nationwide in the 2018 listing for the number of minority students earning associate degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and Humanities, and sixth for students who earned an associate degree in education. lonestar.edu.
