FEATURE 6
Impact Business Vote November 8th! • Check your voter registration status, find your polling location and view a sample ballot at montgomeryvotes.com VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE: October 11 The results of an election can have direct impacts on businesses. That is why understanding the issues, getting to know the candidates, and a high voter turnout is vital. MONTGOMERY COUNTY ELECTION DATES Early Voting Begins Tuesday, October 24th • • • Early Voting Ends Friday, November 4th • • • Vote on Election Day! Tuesday, November 8th 7AM to 7PM

Texans are preparing to cast votes in a slew of local, state and federal races Nov. 8. Here is what you need to know, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.

Q: Am I registered to vote?

A: To verify voter registration status, the Texas Secretary of State’s Office requires one of three forms of identification: a driver’s license number, a Voter ID number or a first and last name along with a county of residence, date of birth and ZIP code. Voters can find out their status at teamrvmvp.sos.texas.gov/MVP/mvp.do.

Q: I’m registered, but I recently moved. Do I need to let someone know?

A: It depends on the location of the move. If it happened within the same county, the voter registrar should be notified in writing. There are several ways to do this. Visit votetexas. gov/register-to-vote/did-you-change-something.html for more information. If the move was to a different county, re-registration is required. See the necessary steps below.

Q: I’m registered, but I changed my name. Do I need to let someone know?

A: Yes, the county registrar should be notified of the change in writing. For more information on how to do this, see the bottom of this page.

Q: If I’m not registered, what do I do?

A: Voters can register by mail or in person. Texas does not offer online registration.

Q: I don’t have a driver’s license. Can I still register to vote?

A: Yes. Texas accepts seven different forms of identification. Options include an election ID certificate, a personal ID card, a handgun license, a U.S. citizenship certificate with a photo, a military ID card with a photo, or a passport.

Q: I want to register in person. Where do I go?

A: Voters can register at their county’s voter registrar’s office. To find your county’s office, visit sos.texas.gov/elections/ voter/votregduties.shtml

Q: I want to register by mail. How do I do that?

A: Voters can fill out an application online, print it, sign it and mail it to their county’s voter registrar’s office. The registration is effective 30 days after it is received and accepted by the registrar. Applications are also available at many post offices, public libraries, government offices or high schools.

Q: When is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election?

A: The deadline is Oct. 11. If an application is postmarked on or before this date, it is eligible for approval by the registrar.

Q: I’m registered. When can I vote?

A: Early voting in Texas begins Oct. 24 and ends Nov. 4. Election Day is Nov. 8. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Q: I’m voting in person. Where do I go?

A: Each voter is provided with a Voter ID card. This includes a precinct number, which indicates where a voter is eligible to vote. In some counties, residents can vote at any designated polling location in their county during early voting and on Election Day. To check whether your county participates in the Countywide Polling Place Program, visit sos.texas.gov/ elections/laws/countywide-polling-place-program.shtml

Q: What do I need to bring with me to the polls?

A: Texans need a photo ID to vote. Acceptable forms of identification include a Texas driver’s license, an election ID certificate, a personal ID card, a handgun license, a U.S citizenship certificate with a photo, a military ID card with a photo, or a passport.

Q: I don’t have an ID. Can I still vote?

A: Voters without a photo ID are required to sign a sworn affidavit that exempts them from the ID requirement, but they must still provide another form of identification Visit votetexas. gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html for more information.

Q: Can I vote by mail in Texas?

A: Only some Texas voters are eligible to request mail-in ballots. To do so, an individual must be age 65 or older, disabled, out of the county on Election Day or during early voting by personal appearance, or confined in jail.

Q: I am eligible to vote by mail. How do I apply?

A: Voters can print an application to vote by mail from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office website. It must be printed, filled out, signed and mailed to the early voting clerk in the voter’s county. The application can also be faxed. Contact info for each county’s early voting clerk can be found at sos.texas. gov/elections/voter/county.shtml. For more details on this process, visit sos.texas.gov/elections/voter/reqabbm.shtml

Q: When is the deadline to apply to vote by mail?

A: The application must be received, not postmarked, by Friday, Oct. 28.

Q: What is the deadline to vote by mail?

A: The Early Voting Clerk must receive your marked ballot by 7 p.m. on Election Day, by 5:00 p.m. the first business day after Election Day if the postmarked ballot was mailed within the United States.

Breakfast Connections Incorporates Monthly Themes

The Chamber’s Breakfast Connections has always been one of our member favorites as it is the only business connection event that allows you the opportunity to learn about every member’s business in attendance.

Each month we provide a theme that members are encouraged to incorporate into their commercial and a Creative Commercial Winner is announced at the end of the breakfast.

August was National Dog Month, so our theme asked members to tell us their favorite type of dog and why and try to relate the breed to their business. The themes are always fun and we learn how creative our members can be. We have members that sing (David Deveau, Woodforest Wealth Strategies), members that act/dance (Colette Kerwick and Lauren Serrano, NobleMotion Dance) and members that come up with a very creative and catchy little rhyme (Sean Thompson, Woodlands Online).

Breakfast Connections also offers a Spotlight Sponsor which provides the member with a three-minute video recorded commercial that is shared on social media and an editorial about the business in Business Today. Interested members should contact Cyndi Alvarado – cyndi.alvarado@ woodlandschamber.org for more information.

Join us for our next Breakfast Connections and learn more about local businesses making connections.

Meet The New Members Hosted by New Danville

We

closed the fiscal year with our Meet the New Members Reception. The event was hosted by New Danville and held at Black Walnut Café.

New Danville is a nonprofit rural community that serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and those who need similar services. Located on 42 acres in Willis, it was established in 2005 and opened its day habilitation program in 2007; it opened its residential community, Meadowbrook, in 2010. There are currently 110 participants in the day program and 36 residents, with a waiting list of 30.

Clients, affectionately known as Wranglers, live, learn, work and grow to help them reach their potential while enhancing skills, improving self-esteem, learning social skills and more. Day program classes provide a wide range of options ranging from metal detecting to art, animal therapy to woodshop, sign language to computer skills, sewing to gardening and more.

Jazzy Junque, an upscale home décor resale store in the Outlets of Conroe, benefits New Danville, as do two major fundraising events: Play a Round for the Wranglers (Nov. 7)

and Spring Thing (April). Items made by the Wranglers can be purchased at Jazzy Junque or from the online store at New Danville’s web site, NewDanville.org.

Helping Wranglers hold appropriate jobs is a high priority at New Danville. Some Wranglers work in the community and several work on site. Thanks to a unique collaboration with Charbonneau Industries, Wranglers produce pallets for the company in their “Pallets to Partners” program. To date, Wranglers have made more than 6,000 pallets for the company.

In April, New Danville released an original music video for a song written by two staff members. “Wranglers’ Ballad” can be found at Ballad.NewDanville.org.

To volunteer at New Danville, go to NewDanville.org/getinvolved. To catch up on news and stories, check out The Wrangler Gazette newsletter at NewDanville.org/newsletter.

As a business owner, you have put your blood, sweat and tears, often quite literally, into building your business. Unfortunately, all that effort can be destroyed in an instant by things beyond your control. You can lose your dream and it might not even be your fault.

Their clients are a blessing to them and they are truly honored when they trust them to protect their business, it is not a task they take lightly. Every year, Main Event Shenandoah throws thousands of parties for groups, corporate events, holidays, and team-building. Whether it’s a group of 10 or an event for 1,000, they’ll make every event one for the history books. C.A.R.E.S.

The C.A.R.E.S. Committee met in August and reviewed a number of community service project applications. “We always enjoy learning more about each nonprofit during the application process and it is always difficult to choose which projects are chosen and which are not. We have to take into consideration what the request is and determine if our participation will make an impact. Then we have to narrow down by month and see which dates are flexible”, stated Corinne Coulter, Education for Tomorrow Alliance and Team Lead for the Chamber’s C.A.R.E.S. Committee.

The team’s selections are as follows:

SEP | Kailee Mills Foundation Drive to Save Lives Golf Tournament

OCT | New Danville Halloween Party for The Wranglers

NOV | The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Children’s Festival: Under the Sea

DEC | Montgomery County Food Bank Stock the Sleigh

JAN | Interfaith of The Woodlands Serving Congregate Meals to Seniors

FEB | Family Promise of Montgomery County Share the Love – Stocking Family Promise Guest Center Essentials

MAR | All Ears! Listening & Language Center Hearing Health for All

APR | Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Honoring all our nonprofit members

MAY | Community Assistance Center Hygiene Supply Drive

JUN | The Harmonie Grace Foundation Annual 5K (Walk/Run/Jog)

JUL | Angel Reach Kids Clothing Drive

We continue to encourage all those that applied to join us the first Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. We end every meeting with a nonprofit round table discussion, where our nonprofitmembers are able to share what is going on in their organization. It’s a great opportunity for our members to connect with an individual in the room or a company that is looking to serve others.

If you are looking to serve others, consider joining the team. For more information, contact Cyndi Alvarado, Vice President of Membership at Cyndi.alvarado@woodlandschamber.org.

Volunteer to Inspire the Next Generation Workforce

This Fall, Education for Tomorrow Alliance volunteers will be engaging in career development programming with area students, and there are several ways to get involved. Here are three ways you can give a little time that will impact students in Montgomery County.

1Share your career wisdom. Career panelists are needed for 90-minute career panels at Conroe and Oak Ridge High Schools throughout the fall, as well as 50-minute sessions at Peet Junior High on November 16. Volunteers share their career stories and real-world professional development advice. Check out the Career Connections and Future Focus links at efta-us.org.

2Serve as a mock interviewer. Students have the opportunity to answer commonly asked questions and get immediate feedback from volunteer interviewers. Mock interviews are scheduled for November 1 at Oak Ridge High School, December 1 at Conroe High School, and November 9 with the Next Generation Leadership program student during lunch hours.

PROFILE OF SUCCESS

The Woodlands is full of amazing stories, and we’re here to tell them.

The Woodlands City Lifestyle is a magazine with a mission to connect members of The Woodlands community with the rich cultural experiences that elevate living. From art to music, from the local dining scene to the local heroes who inspire us all, each month we deliver directly to mailboxes across the area all the beauty, wonder, and excitement that make The Woodlands a one-of-a-kind place to live and work.

Born in December 2021, with longtime area resident and publishing veteran Tonya Butler at the helm, TWCL is fueled by a team of writers, photographers, editors, and other creatives, whose passion is to bring inciteful writing, powerful images, comprehensive event coverage, and opportunities to give back to local residents.

In just a short time, our magazine has grown at an amazing pace, both in readership and in the depth and breadth of stories and content that we bring to The Woodlands. We’re a team that loves connecting the community with information that’s important to them, and we’re excited to continue to bring our best to the pages of TWCL each month.

We’re here to tell the stories that are fun, eye-opening, inspirational and meaningful to you in a way that can only happen when a publication is part of the community it covers!
