s the voice of business in the area, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to keeping our region competitive, improving the business climate and advancing policies that create a more prosperous environment.
The Chamber understands that strong communities are the result of strong business communities. We will continue to build strong relationships with our community partners and our legislators in building a better Montgomery County and a better Texas.
Economic Development
Economic development in Texas is enhanced by strong support of transportation infrastructure, tourism, health care, education, water and natural resources. We encourage multicultural actions on the following vital initiatives to economic development: • Support pro-growth tax policies and reforms. • Support continuation of financial incentives that encourage economic growth and foster innovation. • Support continued evaluation and analysis of plans for the future governance of The Woodlands. • Support entrepreneurial efforts for small businesses. • Support fair and balanced free trade agreements that make the flow of international commerce more efficient and profitable. • Support environmentally conscious economic development. We can achieve our goals through our legislative process that includes developing a business-driven agenda, hosting a variety of legislative events, and educating our members on the impact of current issues. Our member’s input is imperative in executing each phase. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce approved the Chamber’s 2019 Legislative Priorities on August 31, 2018.
The purpose of the Business Advocacy’s Legislative Agenda is to summarize the important legislative goals and areas of concern to our community. Support equity of access to advanced curriculum and technology. • HIGHER EDUCATION Support increased funding for health care professional training, and engineering technology programs. Support increased funding for healthcare residency programs and retaining Texas-trained physicians. Support capital building programs. Health Care
Promote policies that protects our local health care industry and businesses. • LOCAL Support continued growth of The Woodlands Medical Center North. Support funding for mental health policies and initiatives. Support patient access to high-quality, affordable health care in our community. • STATE Support the preservation of increased reimbursement rates for healthcare professionals.
Support updated funding mechanisms emphasizing accountability and productivity for primary and secondary education.
Support the preservation of a robust Designated Trauma Facility and EMS fund.
Support policies, initiatives and vocational training that will increase workforce readiness.
Support the continuation of the 1115 Medicaid Transformation Waiver at current funding levels.
Support increased local and state control of school districts to limit unfunded mandates. Support policies and initiatives that strengthen school safety. Support mental health policies and initiatives that increase awareness and identify potential developmental needs. Support attraction, preparation and retention of Texas school teachers.

Natural Resources

Support continued state funding for the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and encourage local entities to apply for funding.
The continued production of energy and stewardship of our natural resources is vital to a sustainable national and local economy. We encourage support of the following initiatives: Support efforts to protect and improve air quality. Support funding for expansion and development of alternative sources of water. Support best practices for water conservation and protection of water quality. Support funding of near-term and long-term flood mitigation strategies that provide meaningful and cost-effective solutions to protect life and property. Support flood mitigation funding options that encourage regional cooperation among existing local, regional, and state entities. Support efforts to update and modernize local development requirements, including those related to floodplains, drainage, and detention. • ENERGY Support legislation enabling new technologies in energy production. Support the continued exportation of oil and gas. Support a measured and balanced approach to alternative and renewable energy. Tourism
Travel is an important industry in Texas, and the state is a favorite destination for both domestic and international visitors. Tourism revenues provide significant economic benefits for the Texas economy.
Support reasonable alternative transportation options that will relieve congestion and improve mobility throughout the region. Support a unified strategic mobility plan to improve access to The Woodlands Medical Center North Support the acceleration of the I-45N Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study. • STATE Support policies to limit diversion of transportation dollars to other programs. Support increased state funding for transportation projects. • FEDERAL Support programs/legislation that will maximize national highway funding. Support the streamlining of federal regulations to shorten transportation project timelines. Utility Infrastructure/Technology
Support a strong and reliable utility infrastructure system capable of attracting new business and industry with competitive costs that embraces new technologies to provide an enhanced customer experience. • Support a modern cost efficient regulatory process which encourages infrastructure investment that is fair and timely to both the utility and customers.
• Support The Woodlands area as a destination for events and festivals.
• Support fair and equitable treatment of all utilities located in state and municipal rights of way.
• Support funding for programs that benefit travel and tourism, including cultural arts.
• Oppose efforts to regulate broadband internet services as a public utility.
• Support preservation of funding for state tourism promotion.
• Oppose duplicative state cybersecurity mandates.
Transportation
Transportation is a core concept to every aspect of daily life in any community. To maintain a healthy business climate and quality of life, the priority for this infrastructure must not only be its maintenance but also its expansion in times and areas of high growth.: • LOCAL Support mobility that is compatible with economic growth and residential concerns.
Elections
Voter participation is essential to maintaining a vibrant and accountable government at all levels. • Support cost effective initiatives that improve the voter experience and increase voter turnout. • Support consideration of alternative voting methods. • Support access to unbiased and factual information about elections.

f you are looking for ways to give back or just want to learn more about the non-profit organizations in our community, we invite you to join the Chamber’s Community Relations Team (CRT). Through an application process every August, the team welcomes organizations to submit project proposals and then interviews each one. With so many amazing organizations, the team finds the difficult task is trying to decide which organizations are selected and where they can make an impact. CRT meets the first Wednesday of every month at 11:30 a.m. at The Chamber. Here is a list of the projects for the 2018-2019 year. We invite you to join us. OCT • Meals on Wheels Montgomery County: Meal Replacement
Drive. Liquid Food Drive for Glucerna and Ensure. • New Danville Fall Festival – October 31, Noon to 4 p.m. Volunteers needed to set-up and serving lunch and overseeing and participating in group dance and costume judging. NOV • Angel Reach: Celebrate Me! – November 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

TEAMS IN ACTION young professionals network / HOW I BUILT THIS The Young Professionals Network hosted their first “How I Built This” Luncheon in August. The luncheon gave attendees an exclusive inside look at how three entrepreneurs built their company from the ground up. Speakers included: Dan Altom with The Woodlands Young Learners Academy, Bret Strong with The Strong Firm P.C. and Melissa Young with Corporate Incentives, Inc. In a packed room, the speakers gave attendees advice on how to stand apart from the crowd. They stressed that working hard and taking the time to create relationships was essential in advancing their career. They shared stories about the decisions that lead them to building their company as well as the obstacles they faced along the way. Attendees left with three inspiring stories that demonstrate that determination and dedication lead to success.

Heightened Leaders recently held a seminar at the chamber to assist business owners with developing a process to achieve their vision with discipline and accountability. The leadership team learns how to work together and build traction to achieve their goals. EDUCATION The Shops at Woodforest retail center is now open, bringing additional dining, shopping and services to South Montgomery County. On Oct. 5, Interfaith of The Woodlands will celebrate its 45th anniversary with a Day of Caring: A CommunityWide Food Drive in the parking lot of Interfaith of The Woodlands. Interfaith hopes to raise 45,000 pounds of food in honor of its anniversary. Viva la Vida-Viva la Youth was hosted at the home of JJ Medina in Carlton Woods educating the community about actively listening to youth to prevent another tragedy from happening.

The Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) announced the accreditation of The Woodlands Christian Academy. The Woodforest Charitable Foundation (WCF) donated over $1.2 million to more than 30 local charity partners in Montgomery and Harris Counties. WCF is pleased to support various organizations which provide much needed services to our community including hunger relief, health and special needs, family crisis, and youth intervention. No fee is collected, but all donations will benefit Family Promise of Montgomery County to serve homeless families with children in the community, by providing shelter, meals, and compassionate assistance through faith groups.

The Crisis Assistance Center Duck Race in August raised over $50,000 and was attended by over 100 spectators, volunteers, and sponsors as they watched 5,000 yellow rubber ducks swim through the lazy river. And this was on the anniversary of Harvey. My how a year can make a difference and the donation to the Annual Duck Race will continue to help the lives of people in our community.
Judge Kathleen Hamilton, 359th Judicial District Court, will award cash prizes to the winning students and antibullying books to their teachers at an awards ceremony on Oct. 16 for the Dispute Resolution Center of Montgomery County 5thAnnual Bookmark Art Contest at the Montgomery County Commissioners’ Court in Conroe.
