We’re Thankful for You! As we enter the holiday season, I want to take a moment and thank you for your support of, investment in and involvement with The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce. This past fiscal year has been one of increased engagement – from events to business advocacy, from social media campaigns to community service projects. As our 2019 Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon held on September 27 highlighted, your Chamber team has been working on connecting businesses, growing their businesses and influencing our community’s future. See who we recognized and honored at this year’s annual awards luncheon on page 8. With Jeff Garrett of Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. as the 20192020 chairman of the board, this fiscal year has already started out with some great achievements including the rollout of our new logo. We intend that 2020 looks even better for our members and our community. However, not one project, accomplishment, recognition or connection can happen without our members, community and partners. There would be no consumer, audience, supporters, or residents with whom to connect. Thank you for your engagement 2

As we all face limited resources – limited financial means, limited human capital and limited time. There is so much to be done, and with our numerous collaborators who share our commitment and our vision, we can positively influence our small part of the world. So, thank you. It seems so simple. Yet, it is heartfelt. As the largest business association in Greater Houston with nearly 1,500 members, our strength is in our numbers and our future is a result of our membership. Chamber Recognizes Volunteers, Members and Leaders The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce held its 41st Annual Awards Luncheon on Friday, Sept. 27 at The Woodlands Country Club Palmer Course. The annual awards ceremony has honored volunteers, loyal members and community leaders since 1978.

Meet Jeff Garrett, new chairperson of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors population is well served by sophisticated public works and a viable workforce. It creates marketing and networking opportunities to help businesses get the word out about their products and services. It serves as a professional and community resource, staying ahead of the issues that face the community. And it supports local nonprofits through monthly service projects. WHAT ARE THE CHAMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES? Board members have fundamental governance responsibilities—ensuring that the chamber follows its stated missions and financial oversight—in addition to external responsibilities including fundraising, advocacy and community building and outreach.

Jeff Garrett, a resident of The Woodlands since 2002, began his term as the new chairman of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors Sept. 1 after previously serving as a chamber board member, vice president of governmental affairs and vice chairman. Garrett moved to The Woodlands when he joined the Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. and first became involved with the chamber through a county leadership program in 2005. HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? I have always been interested in the mission of chambers. I participated in Leadership Brazos County in BryanCollege Station shortly after college and also participated on the local Chamber membership sales team. I became involved with The Woodlands Area Chamber in 2005 when I participated in the Leadership Montgomery County program, which introduced program participants to different aspects of the local economy and community. WHY IS THE WOODLANDS AREA CHAMBER AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE COMMUNITY? The Woodlands Area Chamber is made up of thousands of business and professional representatives, political advocates and community-minded citizens that have joined together to promote jobs, economic growth and a strong community. So, what roles does the chamber play? It helps to sustain a strong Business Advocacy Council that works with community leaders and influencers to ensure the area’s growing 10

WHEN DID YOU BECOME VICE PRESIDENT OF GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS FOR THE CHAMBER BOARD, AND WHAT DID THAT ROLE ENTAIL? I first joined the Chamber board in 2010 to finish out another member’s term, after the partial term, I then rolled into a new full term. During the second term, I served as the vice president of government affairs. In that role, I led several Chamber teams, including the Economic Outlook Conference. I rolled off for a brief period and then rejoined the Board. This past year, I served as the Vice-Chair. HOW DID YOUR TIME AS BOARD OF DIRECTORS VICE CHAIRMAN PREPARE YOU FOR THE ROLE OF CHAIRMAN, AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DISTINCT DUTIES BETWEEN THOSE TWO POSITIONS? The chairman of the board serves as the volunteer leader of the chamber and manages committees such as the board, Executive Leadership Council, executive committee and nominating team. The vice chairman serves as a backup to the chairman in the event the chairman is unavailable. As vice chairman, I gained experience and an understanding of all the roles of the people who work on the board. One key skill I learned was how to run the board meetings. In addition, I watched how Stuart Lapp (the immediate past chairman) did a great job in raising issues for discussion and consensus building. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE CHAMBER AS ITS NEW CHAIRMAN? The chamber board recognizes that if we want to stay relevant in today’s highly competitive and digital market, we must evolve from an organization known for its ribbon cuttings and member directories. Some of my key goals as chairman will be to crystallize the chamber’s focus on business advocacy programs, grow its membership and improve membership retention by communicating our value to our members and community at large. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE WOODLANDS BUSINESS COMMUNITY? The Woodlands is a special place to do business. We are truly blessed to have elected officials, business owners, educators and residents who realize that we all share in the responsibility of creating economic success and prosperity. While the area continues growing, new developments that bring big opportunities still nurture the small-town community’s livework-play culture, and that’s what makes it so attractive to employers and employees alike. HOW HAS THE WOODLANDS CHANGED SINCE YOU BEGAN WORKING IN THE AREA? The Woodlands has experienced unprecedented growth, transforming south Montgomery County from what was mostly residential when I moved my family here in 2002, into a selfsustaining community home to thousands of businesses in all sectors. WHAT NEW CHANGES OR CHALLENGES DO YOU ANTICIPATE COULD AFFECT THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OVER THE COMING YEARS? With all of this exciting growth and change comes some challenges and potential stress on resources such as workforce, water and transportation. The chamber’s Business Advocacy Council will remain on point making sure that these issues are being prioritized and handled in the interest of the business community. 2020 Class Begins Experience

he Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2020 began their experience on October 7 & 8 with their retreat at Camp Allen. The class participated in a ropes course and other team building activities to bond as a class before starting their year of educational sessions, leadership series, and class project.

Education for Tomorrow Alliance 30-Year History Rooted in the Chamber

ducation for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) is celebrating 30 years of service to Montgomery County during the 2019-20 school year. EfTA was created in 1989 as a project of the The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce and local science and technology professionals who wanted to encourage the next generation of workers, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Education for Tomorrow Alliance eventually became a separate 501(c)(3) with the focus of connecting business and community volunteers to empower tomorrow’s adults. The programs have changed through the years, but the Chamber is still a key partner in involving community members and their companies in EfTA’s efforts to prepare students for the next steps in life. EfTA President Monica Bomkamp Enia shared, “At the core of each career, leadership, and STEM program is the willingness of volunteers to give their time to support kids. Last school year alone, Education for Tomorrow reached around 7,500 students with the support of 1,200 volunteers giving a collective 16,000 volunteer hours. The Chamber, with its dedication to supporting charities, provides numerous opportunities for creating connections that promote student success.” This fall, volunteers can get involved as career panelists and mock interviewers at area schools. In addition, the 30th Annual SCI://TECH science fair that began at McCullough High School in 1990, will be

held on Friday, January 31 with more than 1,200 student participants. Learn more at www.efta-us.org. Spotlight Table: Dispute Resolution Center Montgomery County In September, our spotlight table at the Networking Breakfast was The Dispute Resolution Center of Montgomery County, Inc. (DRC-MC).

DRC-MC is a non-profit, volunteer organization which provides mediation and conflict resolution training to residents, businesses, agencies and the courts. There is a paid staff of 3 and over 50 volunteers, each of whom has had a minimum of 64 classroom hours of training plus six supervised co-mediations prior to handling DRC cases. Started by a committee of the Montgomery County Bar Association in conjunction with commissioner’s court in 1988, it mediated its first case in 1989. It is funded partly by civil suit filing fees, partly by user fees, partly by contributions and grants, and partly by in-kind services provided by the county.
