Celebrating Montgomery County Day at the Capitol

With the Texas General Assembly now in session, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, along with our Montgomery County Council of Chambers partners, visited Austin February 25-26 to ensure lawmakers understand the unique needs of our member businesses and the area economy.

As the leading voice of business in Montgomery County, The Chamber opened the door for more than 150 business leaders to explain their needs to legislators directly. Topics included transportation and infrastructure, health care, education and workforce development, and tourism.

For more than 40 years, the business community has united together to help grow Montgomery County and promote a strong business community through economic development, legislative involvement and bellowing voices at all levels of government. For you as a member, this means that your policy concerns are joined by thousands of others making your voice more powerful.

Along with the opportunity to hear on the ground updates from key members of the Texas House, Senate and Administration, The Montgomery County Council of Chambers received recognition on both the House and Senate floors.

Strengthen the Future Workforce by Hosting a Summer Intern Each summer, Education for Tomorrow Alliance partners with companies large and small throughout the Houston area to offer local students career exploration opportunities. The Student Internship Program (SIP) provides two-week internships to more than 100 motivated 12th grade students each summer. Each student learns about the day-to-day experiences of a profession that interests him or her. Partner companies offer access and career mentoring that give students insights as they plan their future paths.

The program has great potential for last impact on students’ career growth. Will, a current college sophomore studying computer science at the University of Southern California, participated in 2016.

He shared, “EfTA gave me an amazing opportunity to intern at On Center Software. I was given real tasks and responsibilities. As a result, I was able to gain a clear idea of what the working life is really like and what computer scientists really do. In addition, my EfTA internship introduced me to professional role models that I was able to cultivate connections with. I was given the opportunity to come back for a second and third summer at On Center, and could not be happier.”

There is a need for internships in a wide range of fields, including business, law, marketing, and more, but greatest demand is for companies in STEM fields. Education for Tomorrow Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating education and community partnerships that advance student success. With innovative programs focused on career, leadership, and STEM preparation, EfTA is the portal through which business leaders can access and strengthen local education.

Leadership Montgomery County Class: Public Safety Session LMC Class of 2019 Explores Public Safety at Session Sponsored by the City of Conroe

Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to cultivating the future leaders of Montgomery The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2019 recently spent County. The session was planned and directed by Lt. Scott Spencer of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber, the Montgomery Area Chamber, and the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber are all partner Chambers in the LMC program.

Participants are chosen by application process in June of each year.

The session began at The Woodlands Fire Department Central Station with the LMC Leadership Series facilitated by Chad Patterson and LMC alumni.

A Fire & EMS Panel followed that included The Woodlands Fire Department Chief Alan Benson, City of Conroe Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Legoudes, Jr., Montgomery County ESD #1 Fire Department Chief Jason Oliphant, and Montgomery County Hospital District Director of Emergency Medical Services Jared Cosper. The class then toured The Woodlands Fire Department Central Station before traveling to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy.

Once at the training academy, the class was welcomed by Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Captain Tim Holifield and heard from a Law Enforcement Panel that included Holifield, Conroe Police Chief Jeff Christy, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon, Texas Department of Public Safety Captain Henry Scarbrough and Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable Ryan Gable. Following the panel, the class got to experience a crime scene exhibition from investigator Mark Wright.

The class then toured the Montgomery County Jail as well as the Montgomery County 911 and Communications Center. The class then explored law enforcement vehicles and equipment including specialized vehicles, SWAT vehicles, patrol cars, motorcycles, fire marshal vehicles and more. The day ended with a debrief of the entire session.

Community Assistance Center is a not-for-profit agency committed to providing quality social service programs to those in crisis throughout all of Montgomery County. Our mission is to provide resources to meet basic needs and improve quality of life for our neighbors in Montgomery County. CAC is focused on building stronger client relationships and assisting families in establishing attainable goals, accessing community resources and gaining valuable skills pertinent to their success.

CAC provides assistance to thousands of residents throughout Montgomery County whose health and well-being are threatened by unexpected circumstances and need. These are our neighbors who

are facing temporary financial crisis, and we are committed to providing practical solutions through financial assistance with rent, utilities, prescriptions, transportation vouchers, food, clothing and education.

CAC has developed a strong collaboration of community partners to coordinate the delivery of comprehensive resources to our clients.

Conroe ISD Superintendent Explains $807 Million Bond Package to Chamber’s Business Advocacy Council

The Transportation Education Council received updates on long-term solutions to mitigate traffic congestion on I-45 corridor in The Woodlands area.

The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Advocacy Council received an update on Conroe Independent School District’s $807 million bond referendum election set for May 4 at a council meeting on Friday, February 15 at The Chamber office.

In a presentation to the council, Superintendent Curtis Null explained the bond proposal addresses CISD’s growing student population and districtwide needs. According to data from a 2018 Population and Survey Analysts demographics study, CISD has grown by more than 15,000 students over the past decade, and it is estimated the district would reach 76,000 students by 2028.

The bond package includes capital projects including new school buildings, major renovations and additions, land purchases, buses, and technology and safety and security upgrades.

Null said CISD financial advisors project a 1-cent property tax rate increase the first year of the bond, with a maximum increase of 3 cents on the tax rate over the life of the bond.

A 1-cent tax increase on a home in Conroe ISD valued at $300,000 is $2.29 monthly or $27.50 per year, while a 3-cent tax increase on a home in CISD valued at $300,000 is $6.88 monthly or $82.50 annually. The current CISD tax rate is $1.28, the lowest ISD tax rate in Montgomery County by approximately 6 cents and the second lowest tax rate in the greater Houston area.

Null also stated that according to state law, residents 65 years and older who have filed for a homestead exemption are eligible to have their school taxes frozen; therefore, if you are 65 or older and have filed for homestead exemption, this bond issuance will not affect your tax bill.

The CISD Facilities Planning Committee recommended the framework for this bond package. The committee consisted of 27 community members appointed by the Board of Trustees, included Chamber President J.J. Hollie and Chamber Board Member Linda Nelson of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center.

TxDot Area Engineer Adam Galland presented updates on Montgomery County transportation projects at the February 1 Transportation Education Council Meeting.

Galland explained projects including the Planning and Environmental Linkage Study (PEL) on I-45 from Beltway 8 to Loop 336 South spanning Harris and Montgomery Counties will employ ongoing agency and stakeholder involvement in order to create a resolution to congestion issues and improve I-45 mobility.

“As part of The Chamber’s core functions to advocate for business, it is important that we engage and inform our members on important issues affecting our region,” J.J. Hollie, president and CEO of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, said.

“Transportation is a core concept to every aspect of daily life in our community, so we have a long-standing interest in mobility as we evolve to meet the needs our growing population.”

Other TxDot projects and studies discussed included improvements from the I-45 feeder road intersection at SH 242 to US 59, the widening of FM 2978 from Dobbin-Hufsmith Road to FM 1488, and the reconstruction and widening of FM 1488 from Joseph Road to FM 2978.

The next TEC meeting is scheduled for Friday, March 1, 2019, at The Chamber offices.

Community Relations Team Volunteers at Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County ReStore.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is where physical item donations are accepted and processed for sale to the public at a discount with all proceeds going toward the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, TX. In January members of the Community Relations Team volunteered over a course of two days to help sort and bag hardware for sale. While at the ReStore, volunteers had an opportunity to browse the wide selection of inventory. If you are looking for home improvement supplies at a discount, we encourage you to come out to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

They have a wide selection of furniture, unused building supplies, appliances, light fixtures and more.

“We are very excited to grow our family and open a new Oak Ridge Young Learners Academy (also lovingly known as O·RY·LA/õ ri la/), an early childhood learning center providing infant, preschool and Private Pre-Kindergarten care and education to children beginning at age six weeks, in the Oak Ridge community. The Woodlands Township Chairman of the Board Gordy Bunch addressed public officials and business leaders at the annual Economic Outlook Conference on Friday, February 8, 2019. The event, which had more than 650 attendees, was produced by The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce and held at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center. The conference theme was “On the Path to Sustainable Growth” and featured a number of speakers from areas of politics, medicine, economics, development and energy.

EDUCATION Lone Star College has been awarded a $968,537 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission to focus on the skilled workforce shortage. The grant will be used to help Daikin Industries train 415 current employees and hire an additional 115 employees. After competing in the state meet, The Woodlands Christian Academy’s varsity girls swim team is the 2019 TAPPS 4A State Champion. Setting three new state records, six new school records and five personal best times, the girls overcame a 37-point deficit to

eventually win the field by 40.5 total points. This marks the Warriors third State Championship in the 2018-19 school year, after both the girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams earned the title for the third year in a row this fall.
