Making Progress As some COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted, we continue to look ahead as our community makes continuous progress toward the end of the pandemic. At The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, our core values are centered around how we communicate. One of these values being, “We treat everyone with honesty, integrity and respect.” We encourage our members and community to practice respect for the decisions made by businesses in relation to the health of their team and customers during this time. We forge on in our pursuit of bringing a wide variety of voices across all industries to promote dialogue and to advance polices that support innovation, technology, job creation, and growth in the region. The Chamber will be dutifully progressing in our goal of making our members and the community aware about the discussion of Incorporation through our Business Advocacy Council meetings held on the third Friday of every month. It is our organization’s intention to be a continued resource for businesses and build awareness on economic issues that may affect our members. We continue to fulfill the goal of being a pathway to opportunity by ensuring that we always have a seat at every policy makers table and be the voice of business addressing topics such as water, infrastructure, workforce development, etc. The Chamber recently participated in TxDOT’s I-45N Planning and Environmental Study (PEL) which is focused on the future of I-45 from Beltway 8 to South Loop 336 in Conroe. Commissioner Charlie Riley, through the Houston-Galveston Area Council, has convened a team to discuss transportation improvements in Precinct 2. The Chamber is actively involved in the Montgomery County Precinct 3 Thoroughfare Plan. It is important to know that The Chamber team is here for you. By working together, we can help one another navigate through and emerge from our trials stronger than before. Please continue to stay up-to-date with all of our advocacy efforts.

Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee Is Ready to Serve
Apply to be a C.A.R.E.S. Service Project
T
he Chamber’s C.A.R.E.S. Committee (C.A.R.E.S.) is made up of business leaders that have the heart for giving and the spirit of generosity. Some are first time volunteers that are looking to find their passion and others are finding ways to get their companies engaged in giving back. Whatever the case, the team enjoys meeting representatives from many of the non-profit organizations that are members of The Chamber and learning what their needs are and how they may be of assistance. The team is open to all Chamber members. This team spearheads The Chamber’s fourth core function, supporting charitable causes. In order to best serve The Chamber’s 150+ non-profit organizations as members, C.A.R.E.S has established a monthly schedule of projects and organized an application process that takes place every summer. Is your nonprofit interested in applying?
The Application Process: If you work for a non-profit organization and want to know how the team can help you, please consider applying to be a C.A.R.E.S. Service Project. Each organization will be asked to provide a detailed summary of their project and encouraged to send us a one-minute video clip in support of their project request. Applications are due by July 23, 2021. The C.A.R.E.S. Committee will then host a Strategic Planning Meeting after they have reviewed each application and video submission. The Committee will deliberate over the many project opportunities and selects a project a month. If your organization presents a project for consideration, you will not be eligible to serve in the Strategic Planning Meeting to ensure the selection process is fair for all applicants.
What kind of projects are successful? It is the committee’s goal to serve one non-profit per month. Projects for consideration are volunteering to work fundraisers, help with a donation drive or a community service day where the committee provides sweat equity to help conquer a project. The most successful projects are the ones that are already established since the team is made up of volunteers all with full-time jobs, they are not equipped to create a project or solicit opportunities, but rather to increase your projects awareness or impact. Since many organizations present projects that often occur within the same month those with flexibility on dates are advantageous. We recommend proposing more than one project if dates are not flexible. In April the team will be busy preparing for the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and will not select projects presented to occur in the month of April.

C.A.R. C.A .R.E. E.S S. COMMITTEE What does the application look like? The applications go out this month to all 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations. The application asks for specifics about your project. Such as, how many volunteers are needed, is there an age limit, and how many hours will the project take. If ever in doubt on what to include contact Cyndi Alvarado - cyndi. alvarado@woodlandschamber.org. She is eager to get you involved and available to answer your questions.
What if my project is not selected? If your project is not selected, we encourage you to consider joining the committee and applying again. Each meeting concludes with a nonprofit roundtable which allows our nonprofits the opportunity to discuss what is going on in their organization. We have seen projects that the committee was unable to fulfill, but the project impacted another committee member, and they were able to get their company involved.
Who can join C.A.R.E.S. C.A.R.E.S. is open to all Chamber members. It is a great opportunity to get to know area non-profits and can help you establish philanthropic endeavors for your business and engage your staff in the rewards of serving others.

Kenny Speight In Memory of Our Former Board Chairman (2006-2007) We are saddened to hear of the passing of our former Board Chairman, Kenneth Speight. Business Advocacy Council At the April Business Advocacy Council meeting held by The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, Rob Eissler, Executive Director at Westwood Magnolia Parkway Improvement District, informed the attendees about possible plans for “County Redistricting”. Mr. Eissler mentioned the importance of the census to businesses who rely on the data for market research, locations, and economic development. He defined, “Redistricting as the revision or replacement of existing electoral districts, resulting in new districts with different geographical boundaries.” Mr. Eissler explained, Texas grew in population by 15.3% from 2010 to 2019, with almost 4 million added people, resulting in a projected three congressional seats being added. He stated the basic purpose is to equalize population among electoral districts if publication of

the United States decennial census indicates population has increased or decreased over the last decade. According to Mr. Eissler, the data showed the majority population of the state of Texas lies in its metro areas with projections indicating the areas of the state to see the greatest increases in population. He mentioned, these areas are in the population triangle, anchored by the state’s major metro areas of Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Houston-Sugarland-The Woodlands, San Antonio-New Braunfels, and Austin-Round Rock.

Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee Collaborates With
Nonprofit to Provide Easter Celebration Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee recently collaborated with Children’s Books on Wheels (CBOW) for two very special Easter Celebrations. The first celebration kicked off with Special Angels of The Woodlands. Special Angels provides the highest quality Day Activity Center for adults with intellectual disabilities. They strive to encourage self-reliance, social skill development and community involvement. Special Angels vision is to integrate their Angels into the community while working towards longterm residential housing. The committee than closed the day with the wonderful kids from the Tamina Community at Children’s Books on Wheels. CBOW is a nonprofit mobile literacy program that began in 2004 providing books and resources to students and families in rural and urban cities. This year alone CBOW has donated over 5,000 books to children, churches, other nonprofits and civic groups including the YMCA After School and Summer Programs. At the end of the day, our committee reaped the most rewards and enjoyed spending quality time interacting with the
Angels and the children in Tamina. Some of the activities that we were able to participate in were outdoor games including volleyball and jump rope. Everyone was treated to a pizza party and ended the festivities with an Easter Egg Hunt. There were thousands of Easter Eggs to be found, some great “special prizes” and everyone left with a stuffed Bear or Bunny. The Diplomat Team has often been referred to as the hardest working team at The Chamber or an extension of the Membership Department.
