Making Progress We have now entered the second half of 2021 and excitement is buzzing as the entire community has started reengaging and participating in activities that brings us back together in-person. Here at The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce we are well underway with plans for all our Fall events and activities meant to strengthen positive connections and relationships for our members and to serve as a pathway to opportunity.

As the season progresses, we will be taking our activities outdoors to enjoy our Annual Golf Championship being held at 10AM on November 1st at The Golf Trails of The Woodlands. This is an excellent way for members to engage and connect while enjoying a fun round of golf. This year, we are adding a new event to our calendar that will help us achieve this goal. The Woodlands Area Business Summit will be held in the first week of November and will provide leading edge information to companies, entrepreneurs and small businesses so they may remain competitive and productive while maintaining a healthy business culture for all employees. Here at the Chamber, it is important for us to speak on topics of business advocacy as we serve as a viable voice for our community. What did Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. do to operate through the pandemic? Jeff Garrett: Our company demonstrated remarkable resiliency during the pandemic, at a time when society needed us most. Governments deemed the petrochemical industry as critical infrastructure to combat the virus. It reasserted the central role our products play and the many industries they are associated with, from health care to food manufacturing and a lot more. Our materials are essential to create products that ensure quality of life, way beyond the critical needs often associated with medicine and nutrition. For example, the nesting behavior caused by the pandemic increased the demand for products made with our materials. It shifted consumer habits as more people spent time at home and redirected their spending towards home goods and electronics. This includes things like plastic tables for their backyard, kayaks for activities away from crowds, basketball sets, and much more.

Tell us more about the company’s growth. Jeff Garrett: We are a global manufacturer of petrochemicals that are used in 70,000+ consumer and industrial goods and are a supplier to customers in nearly 140 countries. Since our formation in 2000, our company has tripled its assets to more than $17 billion and increased annual revenue to over $8 billion. We employ 5,000 highly educated diverse employees across four continents. Another competitive advantage is that we hold more than 4,000 domestic and international patents and patent applications. Our MarTECH™ Loop Slurry Process is among the most widely used solutions for polyethylene production. In fact, there are more than 80 units employing our loop slurry technology all over the world. An important topic in this day and age is sustainability. Our employees and customers are highly engaged in sustainability issues like plastic waste. In 2019, we became a founding member of The Alliance to End Plastic Waste. In October last year, we became the first U.S. company to announce successful commercial scale production of circular polyethylene using advanced recycling technology.

What is the importance of the petrochemical industry in the Houston area? Jeff Garrett: In addition to the things I previously mentioned, Houston’s petrochemical industry is an economic engine in our region’s success and a major source of job creation in the region and nationwide. Greater Houston is probably one of the most

renowned petrochemical hubs in the world. Many petrochemical complexes along the Gulf Coast are all interconnected by a vast pipeline network that carries feedstocks and products among all of the plants. That allows us to be well positioned in the market, especially with the oil shale boom in Texas. That’s a key advantage, as we have pipelines to collect much of that production and transport that to the Gulf Coast for use at the various petrochemical plants.

What is Chevron Phillips Chemical Company’s involvement in the community? Jeff Garrett: Since 2000, we have contributed more than $32 million to various charitable efforts in communities in which we have a presence. One recent example is we just pledged $1.7 million for the Sweeny Independent School District Career and Technology Education Center in Brazoria County to help nurture careers in manufacturing. From philanthropy to charity to volunteerism, our efforts support many organizations including United Way, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity, Education for Tomorrow Alliance, Meals on Wheels- Montgomery County, and the Montgomery County Food Bank.

Why do you feel it is important to be involved with the Chamber? Jeff Garrett: I enjoy what the Chamber stands for. It is instrumental in being an advocate for the business community, creates great networking opportunities, and strives to make The Woodlands a premier place to live and work. I have made many acquaintances and lifelong friends through my involvement with the Chamber.

As a large company, what does Chevron Phillips Chemical Company get from the relationship with the Chamber? Jeff Garrett: Being the type of company we are, we don’t really expect to find new customers for petrochemicals in The Woodlands Area Chamber. That is just not the nature of our business as it would be for a lot of the small business members that we have. For us, we believe that it is more important to give back to the community by supporting the efforts of the Chamber. We do that both financially as an executive level member and by supporting employees such as myself, as I have been a board member for many years and I am the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Virtual Events: Where are we now?

e are all celebrating what seems to be the emergence from COVID and all its restrictions. We can’t wait to have an excuse to meet face to face or attend an in-person event. Several nonprofit organizations dipped their toe into live events this spring – CASA with a sociallydistanced concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and most recently, Shelter for Shelter, a benefit for Yes to Youth where nearly 200 supporters gathered at Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands. Both events exceeded their fundraising expectations, which begs the question, are people more generous post-COVID? That’s a question I’ve been pondering. Despite the success of recent live events – the Angel Reach Gala and Yes to Youth’s Ladies Night Out, I’d caution people not to count their chickens before they hatch. Live events planned for the fall, many that went virtual last year or were cancelled altogether, need to have a Plan B just in case COVID rears its ugly head again with a resurgence in cases. The reality is that here in Montgomery County, we have a fully vaccinated rate of 42.4%, higher than the 37% rate in Texas. Experts recommend at least 70% of the population be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. We are not out of the woods yet.

Here are some tips to consider if you are planning or deciding on a live, virtual or hybrid event: Send a Save the Date and press release ASAP – event calendars are crowded from rescheduled events. Choose a space, preferably an outdoor venue, or one with an outdoor option. Read your contracts carefully with the venue and vendors to see what your options are if you must cancel or reschedule. Plan everything with the safety of your guests in mind. Consider a Hybrid option (live and virtual) for your event.

A virtual component allows you to reach a broader audience and minimizes costs for speakers who can present remotely. For a fundraising event, it expands your network for donations and new donors. For virtual or hybrid events, be sure you have a reliable software compatible with your streaming platform.

For a virtual or hybrid event, a trusted AV team is a must. Do not skimp on this. Always plan with your audience in mind and how you can keep them engaged and interactive during a virtual or hybrid event. Use a Chat feature, Polling feature, or create Break Out rooms to allow people to participate and network. Create a value-based sponsorship packet where you can measure the results of a sponsor’s investment (provide metrics for social media, posts, distribution for publications, reach for a Facebook ad). For any virtual or hybrid event, offer ways to engage your audience – a party pack that includes a restaurant gift card, party napkins, wine, and perhaps a yard sign to display the week of the event. Consider services like EatNgage, an online service that coordinates meal orders from various restaurants delivered to their door for your event, Cameo that provides celebrity messages for a nominal fee, and platforms like Socio who offer break out rooms and a closed caption option with a translation feature (think Spanish or Chinese).

Virtual and hybrid events are here to stay. Determine your objectives, whether it’s meeting a fundraising goal or engaging potential or current clients. Set your budget, examine your audience or potential audience and make your plan accordingly. Virtual events minimize costs and any risk associated with unforeseen events – whether it’s COVID or a natural disaster. Hybrid events give you the fill the need for a live event but allow the safety net and broader reach of a virtual event. Keep in mind, that in most cases a hybrid event is your most expensive option. The bottom line is whatever you decide to do – live, hybrid or virtual, decide now, set your date, communicate often with your potential guests and sponsors, secure your location, have a Plan B, and get ready to host a successful event. Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee Hosted A Successful Donation Drive on behalf of United Way

It is hard to imagine thinking about school shopping when the summer has just begun. However, United Way is always one step ahead preparing to help serve those in need before they even ask. The Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee partnered with United Way during the months of May and June to host Project Undercover. This donation drive is designed to provide students K-12 with new socks and undies to prepare them for the upcoming school year. Through the help of our C.A.R.E.S. Committee, and many fabulous members, we were able collect an array of under garments for children of all ages. The Chamber thanks all of you that donated to this cause.
