A Message from J.J. Hollie It’s a great time

to be involved with The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce and this area’s business community!

As we all return from the holidays and back into the routine of our business, the Chamber has been working to bring you excellent events to begin the new year.

Every year in January, the Chamber features an impressive array of local restaurants at Taste of the Town and provides an excellent opportunity for our local eateries to display their talents. This year’s event was sponsored by Randall Reed’s Planet Ford Lincoln and Visit The Woodlands and had over 3,000 attendees. Winners for Best Appetizer was Broken Barrell, Best Entrée was Truluck’s Seafood Steak and Crab House and Best Dessert was Robard’s Steakhouse. Attendees also voted on the Best Decorated Booth (Johnnie’s Italian Steakhouse) and the People’s Choice Award (Robard’s Steakhouse). Our thanks to all of the restaurants who participated. Every booth had excellent offerings and it was impossible to leave hungry!

Q&A with J.J. Hollie How long have you lived in The Woodlands and what has kept you here?

• We moved to TW in July of 2016 after selling our house in Conroe and working for the Chamber for almost a year. We have always enjoyed the quality of life in TW and enjoy all of the amenities.

What is the No. 1 thing in The Woodlands area you’d take a visiting friend to see/do?

• It probably depends on the time of year but the Ice Rink is a perfect place to visit during the holidays. Otherwise, a nice dinner and walk along the Waterway is always a big hit.

At the time you graduated from Pacific University — what did you expect to be doing at this point in your career?

• Having graduated with a political science degree, I assumed I would be working in Austin or Washington D.C. But, after staffing for Congressman Charlie Wilson for six years, I felt it was important to work in the private sector. That led to almost 20 years in the telecom industry, which then led to my position at The Chamber.

What experiences from childhood later influenced your career path?

• Being an Army brat, we moved around a lot so I had the chance to meet a lot of people and see a lot of different places like Japan, Holland and Alaska. I think that experience helped me to embrace new things and enjoy meeting new people, which led me to the ultimate person to person job here at The Chamber.

Do you remember your first pay check? How did you earn it?

• I just remember how small it was! I started working as a landscaper and remember how hard it was to earn a few bucks.

Who mentored you? Who first recognized your gifts?

• I have been very fortunate to have many leaders and mentors in my life that have encouraged me to grow, take risks and hold me accountable.

From high school coaches to professors to bosses, those individuals pushed me to succeed beyond my perceived limits.

What skills did you develop early on that you still use every day as an executive?

• The best skill is listening and I struggle with it every single day…

I am constantly reminding myself to stop and hear the whole story before plunging in with a solution. After listening to all the options and engaging the right people, we can usually find a solution.

Which entrepreneur or businessperson really inspires you? And why?

• I recently watched a movie about Steve Jobs and his drive, vision and determination was impressive. He inspired me to think bigger and strive for things that people think are impossible. Also watching him struggle with relationships (both personally and professionally) inspired me to avoid those pitfalls as well.

Prior to becoming the president of The Chamber, you served as a board member. How did you get involved in The Chamber/The Woodlands business community?

• When I moved from Lufkin to Conroe in 2007, I immediately enrolled in the next Leadership Montgomery County class, which led to meeting a lot of new people and led to joining the Legislative Team at the Chamber. From there, I volunteered on various committees, was nominated to the Board, then to Chairman of the Board.

Please describe your position in five words: • Challenging, engaging, rewarding, fulfilling and humbling.

What do you think most people don’t know about The Chamber?

• I think most people do not know about our advocacy efforts on behalf of the community. We regularly meet and discuss important issues with elected officials from Montgomery County and beyond.

What Chamber events/programs are you most looking forward to in the new year?

• The next event I am most looking forward to is Montgomery County Day at the Capitol on February 25 and 26. For the first time, all The Chambers in Montgomery County are working together to represent our area in Austin and support legislative priorities that can make a difference in everyone’s daily life.

What’s still on your bucket list?

• I would love to do another Ironman Texas and then one more abroad, perhaps in Europe…but I just don’t know if my body could handle it!

What legacy do you hope The Chamber leaves for future generations?

• The Chamber should be the premier business organization that every single business wants to be involved with and support because we should be doing the most for them whether it is representation on key policies, providing meaningful events to learn and network with their peers, being a resource to resolve problems or supporting local charities.

What advice or resource would you offer to someone looking to grow as a leader?

• Be brave! Don’t avoid doing something because you fear failure. In fact, seek out risk and embrace doing new things.

Nothing great was ever accomplished by staying on the sidelines.

January the Transportation Education Council received a community update from local leaders.

Speakers included:

• Kathie Reyer, City Administrator - City of Shenandoah • Don Norrell, President - The Woodlands Township • Richard Derr, City Manager - City of Oak Ridge North Current and future transportation projects such as the Tamina/ David Memorial Drive intersection and major intersection improvements at I-45 and Research Forest were discussed. Short term project updates included changes to extend the west bound right hand lane at Tamina Road and David Memorial located in the City of Shenandoah.

The Transportation Education Council is focused on roads, interstates, airports, alternative transportation, rail, etc. and informing and soliciting input from our members on how mobility affects businesses in and around the region. Our objective is to educate, engage, inform and involve our chamber membership. u All members are welcome to join us the first Friday of every month at 8am. Education for Tomorrow Alliance is grateful to the individuals and organizations that graciously contributed to the success of the 29th Annual SCI: //TECH Exposition, themed Where STEM Gets Its Roots. With the support of businesses, community volunteers and partner schools, EfTA engaged nearly 5,000 K-12 students through the 13 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics events. Thanks to the following partners who made the 2019 SCI: //TECH Exposition possible: ANNUAL SPONSORS: The success of each SCI://TECH event depends on dedicated volunteers, and there are several ways to engage.Judges are needed for events ranging from the Biotechnology Competition to robotics to technical writing, but the greatest need is for science fair judges on Friday, February 1. There are three volunteer shifts throughout the day starting at 7:45 am, 9:30 am and 2:00 pm where volunteers are given a training and the opportunity to engage with students about their projects. Volunteering does not require a background in science, but rather a willingness to talk with students about their findings. Visit efta-us.org/volunteer to learn more or to sign up.

Leadership Montgomery County Class: Insight into Healthcare in Montgomery County

The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2019 recently explored healthcare in Montgomery County at their Healthcare Session, sponsored and hosted by Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands.

The day kicked off with the Leadership Series facilitated by Chad Patterson and LMC alumni. Session Director Linda Nelson welcomed the class and gave an overview of the day’s events before Walter Wilkerson, Jr., M.D. presented the history of healthcare in Montgomery County.

Freddy Warner with Memorial Hermann Health System presented the class with legislative healthcare updates. The class then got a look into the issues facing hospital CEOs in Montgomery County with the CEO panel, consisting of Dr. Debra Sukin of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, Jim Parisi of CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands Hospital, and Michelle Riley-Brown of Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands. Each CEO gave insight to real concerns and issues they face as well as how they got to where they are now.

After lunch, the class heard from Scharlotte Spencer on end-of-life issues and Dr. Divya Chirumamilla on the opioids crisis. Evan Roberson of Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare spoke to the class about mental health in Montgomery County. The class then had the opportunity to tour Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands. After the tour, the class learned about the role healthcare centers play in the community from Missy Herndon of Interfaith Community Clinic and Karen Harwell of Lone Star Family Health Center.

The day ended with a presentation from Dr. Charles Henley on the new College of Osteopathic Medicine at Sam Houston State University.

Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to cultivating the future leaders of Montgomery County. The mission of LMC is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County.

THE CITY OF OAK RIDGE NORTH

The City of Oak Ridge North was incorporated in 1979 and is one of the youngest cities in Montgomery County.

Oak Ridge North sits on I-45 about 10 miles south of Conroe and encompasses approximately 1.5 square miles. The City of Oak Ridge North adopted a City Manager – Council form of government. City Manager Richard Derr manages the day-to-day operations with City Council making all major policy decisions. The current City Council is made up of five (5) councilpersons and the Mayor. Mayor Jim Kuykendall, Mayor Pro Tem Paul Bond, Dawn Candy, Alex Jones, Clint McClaren and Frances Planchard make up the City Council. The City Council is helped in their duty by the participation of several boards and commissions, including: Planning and Zoning Commission whose charge is to regulate zoning and long range planning; the Community Affairs Committee whose charge is to engage the community at large with events and outreach; and the Oak Ridge North Economic Development Corporation (ORNEDC) whose charge is to maintain the business environment.

Currently, the City of Oak Ridge North is working on plans to help relieve congestion on Robinson Road. As is well known, when you are the 7th largest growing county, there are bound to be mobility

issues. The City has partnered with Montgomery County to improve the intersection at Patsy and I-45/Woodlands Parkway. This will begin a long process to create improvements and ultimately realign Robinson Road. The City also completed a Master Drainage Plan (MDP) in 2017 and plans to begin implementation in phases to decrease water retention throughout the City.

The ORNEDC is also constantly working on bringing in quality businesses. The ORNEDC is a citizen volunteer group appointed by the City Council. It is a not for profit 4B Economic Development Corporation funded by a voter approved one half-cent dedicated sales tax, which help keep property taxes down. The ORNEDC’s focus is to increase quality of life for our community through: richer job opportunities that come from commercial development, diverse options in retail, restaurant, and service providers and investment in the community that will maintain the high standards our residents have enjoyed for years.

The City of Oak Ridge North is celebrating twenty (20) years with the Chamber. We are proud to be members and work with businesses and organizations – even if not in Oak Ridge North – for the betterment of the community as a whole. The Woodlands Chamber affords the City an opportunity to not only share the projects we are working with but to get updates on the area at large that feed into our plans. The County shares transportation/mobility issues as well as drainage strategies to create contiguous planning to ensure the counties forward progression.

TEAMS IN ACTION Community Relations Team /MOMENTS OF COMPASSION Community Relations Team join Moments of Compassion for Holiday Market Fundraiser.

When Zipporah Singleton met with the Community Relations Team in August 2018, she updated them on her passion to help those in need. Moment of Compassion was formed with the purpose of providing resources and assistance to those that have been affected by devastation such as hurricanes, flooding and fires. Having just seen our community pull together after Hurricane Harvey, the team was quick to get involved.

In December 2018, Moments of Compassion hosted a Holiday Christmas Market Fundraiser.

The event brought in various vendors with a percentage of the sales going back to Moments of Compassion. CRT provided volunteers to help with set-up and check-in.

Well the answer is YES! The Chamber averages 100 members and guests each month. David Dewhurst of Prosperity Living is the Team Leader for the event. When asked what he receives from his attendance, he stated “I have met a number of members that provide services that I need for my business and over the years, I have built some solid relationships. If there is only one networking event you are able to attend, I would recommend the Networking Breakfast because no other event allows you the opportunity to tell that many people about what you do and also learn what others do.” The fun starts when each member ties their business commercial into the monthly theme or topic for the month. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce Members enjoyed a festive holiday edition of the Business After Hours at Southern Star Brewing.

Founded in July 2007 in Conroe, Texas, Southern Star Brewing was the first craft brewery in the great state of Texas to can craft beer. Due to increase in popularity of their brews, they delightedly moved their operations to a new, custom built facility on 13-acres of wooded property in 2016. Members were able to enjoy an overlook of the production brewhouse from the extraordinary tap room while sampling their fine

craft beers, including Bombshell Blonde, Buried Hatchet Stout, Conspiracy Theory IPA and Blood Belt Pale Ale. Though “Baby it was cold outside�, ale drinkers still enjoyed the outdoor Biergarten where Southern Star Brewing has been known to host a homebrew competition to which the grand prize winner gets a chance to brew their recipe on the Southern Star Brewing system.

Bayou Land Conservancy (BLC), a local land trust focused on conserving land and protecting Houston’s primary water source, Lake Houston, announced that the westernmost trailhead of the Spring Creek Nature Trail, Creekside Park West, is now officially open to the public, along with four additional miles of natural surface trail. The location of the Creekside Park West Trailhead is on Dr. Ann Snyder Way, off Creekside Forest Dr. More than 2,500 hours of volunteer labor went into trail construction, which included 20 bridges and boardwalks. “The Spring Creek Nature Trail is one of the most unique trails in all of Texas and the country,” said Gordy Bunch, Chairman of The Woodlands Township.

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital has been recognized as the first DNV GL - Healthcare certified Hip and Knee Replacement center in the northern Houston region. DNV GL - Healthcare certification as a Hip & Knee Replacement Center validates the hospital’s excellence across the spectrum of hip and knee replacement care, from diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation, education and outcomes.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is now ranked third in the top 100 amphitheaters in the world based on the number of tickets sold so far in 2018, according to Pollstar magazine, the concert industry’s leading trade publication. The Pavilion’s ticket sales have totaled 467,620 for concerts between November 23, 2017 and November 21, 2018. The Pollstar report is reflective of this year’s nearly twenty sold-out events at the Pavilion.

Grand Central Park has announced several new amenities, including a resort-style pool. The pool will be part of a 13-acre amenity complex that will also encompass a fitness room, event room, kitchen, yoga/ event lawn, playground and large outdoor pavilion.

Interfaith of The Woodlands elected four new distinguished individuals to serve on the 2019 Interfaith Board of Directors. Rob Johnson, 2018 Board Chairman of Interfaith of The Woodlands, announced the recent appointments of Father Tom Rafferty, Pastor Rodney Mills, Kerrie Guerrero, and Jim Parisi to the Board.

The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, will hold its 20th Annual Wine Dinner and Auction Sunday, March 24 at 5 p.m. on The Pavilion’s Main Stage. This exclusive dinner funds scholarships for local students pursuing the fine arts in higher education.

Affiliated anesthesiologist Kyle Stanosheck, M.D. has been named the 2018 Physician of the Year at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center.

Dr. Stanosheck was recognized by his colleagues and hospital administrators for his professionalism, compassion, collaborative spirit and patient-focused care. Congratulations to Dr. Stanosheck!
