A Message from J.J. Hollie We know in this fast-paced world, how you do business is always changing. What doesn’t change is the need to protect your business from outside threats and the need to represent business interests with elected officials.

As a core function, The Woodlands Area Chamber’s advocacy efforts focus on creating an atmosphere in which businesses can succeed and create jobs and the community can flourish. We work with organizations on the local, county, state and federal levels to improve our region’s business climate. Most recently, bringing together more than 150 business leaders to visit lawmakers in Austin for Montgomery County Day at The Capitol. This spring and summer, we’ve partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Association of Business to bring two important programs to The Woodlands. Join us May 29 for the Cyber Security Series: Greater Houston we’re hosting with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel, experts will 2 woodlandschamber.org APRIL 2019

share insights on a multitude of topics from Assessing Business Cyber Risk, to Tackling Complex Cybercrimes, and even a live hack. Reserve your seat for this free event at cvent.me/1GbYz. Mark your calendar for July 11. We’ve partnered with the Texas Association of Business to host a special review of the 86thLegislative Session at Lone Star College System from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is a unique opportunity to hear from state lawmakers and area experts on what was accomplished during session and what issues our state and specifically The Woodlands and surrounding communities still face. Be on the lookout for the speaker lineup and agenda in the next coming months and register at txbiz.org/events. I so look forward to seeing you on May 29 and July 11. As always, I encourage you to attend our Business Advocacy Council meetings the third Friday of every month at 8 a.m. in The Chamber Lakeshore Conference Room. Please visit woodlandschamber.org/calendar for additional details and reach out to me with any questions.

Leadership Montgomery County Class: Infrastructure in Montgomery County LMC Class of 2019 Explores Infrastructure in Montgomery County at Session Sponsored by Entergy Texas The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2019 recently got a look into some of the latest issues and accomplishments in infrastructure in Montgomery County at their Infrastructure Session sponsored by Entergy Texas. The Infrastructure Session allowed the 44 business and community leaders to take a deeper look into the inner workings of the county, from water and electricity to roads, communication, and more. LMC Board Member Erich Peterson of Jones|Carter served as the session director, planning the day for the class. Held at the San Jacinto River Authority, the day began with the Leadership Series, followed by an overview of infrastructure from Peterson and fellow LMC graduate Dan Kolkhorst of The Woodlands Development Company. LMC graduate Rob Koester of Consolidated Communications gave the class a look into communications infrastructure in the county. The class then heard from Chris Meeks of the San Jacinto River Authority before taking a tour of the Lake Conroe dam. The afternoon featured Stuart Barret of Entergy Texas and Mark Smith, division manager of the SJRA GRP Division. The class then toured the San Jacinto River Authority Surface Water Treatment Plant and the Montgomery County Utility District #3 Wastewater Treatment Plant. Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to cultivating the future leaders of Montgomery County. The mission of LMC is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County. The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber, the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber, and the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce are all partner Chambers in the LMC program. Participants are chosen by application process in June of each year. For more information about Leadership Montgomery County, please visit LMCTX.org

ways to engage in education this spring Volunteers will engage about 1,000 junior and senior high students this spring through Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) career, leadership and STEM programs. There are several ways to get involved, and several can be done in the span of a lunch break.

1>

Share your words of wisdom as part of a career panel! An easy way to volunteer is to share your career story. Students ask the questions they really want answered. Check out the EfTA website to find panel dates at Conroe and Oak Ridge High Schools or Peet and Washington Junior High Schools this spring.

2>

Sign up to host a high school intern. With the help of volunteer hosts, more than 100 students will gain insights into their desired professions through two-week internships during the summer. Check out the EfTA website to learn more about hosting or to refer current 11th graders interested in participating.

3>

Serve as a mock interviewer. Volunteers are needed on May 7 and 9 to help get students interview-ready! Interviewers challenge students to improve their skills by offering immediate feedback on some common interview questions and give tips for how to shine during interview time. To learn more about these or other opportunities, visit efta-us.org. Education for Tomorrow Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating education and community partnerships that advance student success. With innovative programs focused on science, technology and career preparation, EfTA is the portal through which business leaders can access and strengthen local education.
