Year 7 Team Building Day

Art Award
Welldoneto Year8 students Seth Bird, Jack Hughes, Isabel Payne, Isabel Panditaratne, Luke Wilson and Jacob Zelikson. They recently received their certificate for completing the ArtAwardinthelastyear.
Geography Fieldwork
Y12 geographers gained a brief introduction to fieldwork by examining the key attributes that make a place exceptional. They considered whether the quad is suitable for sitting, walking, fostering community, providing fun, activity and greenspace.

Cricket
Following a successful golf season in which Josiah Stockill, Y9, delivered strong performances in the North England Championship, the Yorkshire Championship, and won the Junior Open at Moor Allerton, Josiah has been selected fortheYorkshireU16squad.
Netball
3 senior netball teams played at the Alex Reid tournamentsinSheffield,lastSaturday.Itisalways afantasticdayandthis yearwas no different. Well done to 2nd VII for finishing 1st in the second team tournament. Unfortunately the 1st VII narrowly lost out on victory in their tournament duetogoaldifference.CongratulationstoSummer Anderson, Y13, for receiving Player of the Tournamentagain(havingwonbeforein2021)!
Rugby
There was a great block fixture against Barnard Castle last Saturday, with 5 teams playing at home and another 5 playing away. With 6 teams winning their matches it was a good start tothenewseason.
Congratulations to Max Chaplin, Y11, who played several games for Cricket Scotland over the summer. He then flew to Belfast with the U15s to compete in the Celtic Cup against Ireland. Unfortunately, Scotland were defeated in both games; however, Max displayed exceptional batting skills, scoring 35and32,respectively.
Congratulations to Theo McLelland, Y10, on an excellent breakout season with Yorkshire U15s. He bowled superbly and scored his maiden half century. Withanotherwinterof preparationahead we look forward to seeing what he can do in the upcomingseason.
Well done to Grovians CC, who secured 2nd place in the Bradford Evening League and earned promotion. Unfortunately, they fell short in the semi-finalsonfinalsday.
Fencing
Well done to Kira Grahamslaw, Year 12, who was fencing at the British Youth Championships last weekend in Nottingham. Kira achieved 7th place outof49intheCadetsand19thplaceoutof45in theJuniorevents.
Last Saturday, we hosted our first-ever 'home' teamfencingtournament, with four schools from around Yorkshire attending. Woodhouse Grove teams represented Years 8, 10, and 11, securing two bronze medalsandasilver.
Artistic Swimming
Well done to Jenny Ingham, Y11, whose artistic swimming squad clinched gold in the 2023 NationalComboCupoverthesummer.
Year 8 Geography
Year 8 engaged in collaborative learning to identify and sequence the different types of weathering that shape and transform our landscapes.Together,they determined the order of the weathering processes and selected the appropriateimagestoillustratethefourtypes.
Grove Awards
Well done to Archie Duggan, Y9, and Isabelle Hastings, Y8, who were presented with their 2022/23 Grove Awards this week. The challenges they completed included climbing club, textiles club, achieving 5 house points and participating in the summerproduction of Alice in Wonderland. Students in Years 8 to 10 have until the end of September to claimtheirGroveAwardsforlastyear.
Arkwright Scholarship Success
Congratulations to Lucy Hanson, Year 12, who has become an Arkwright Engineering Scholar. This scholarship is one of the most highly esteemed schemes of its type in the UK, encouraging and supporting scholars into careers in the engineering professions. Lucy has successfully completed the application itself, a problem solving exam and a rigorous interview stage, competing against 1,500 pupilsfor300scholarships.
Maths Collaboration
Year 7 got to know their classmates and refreshed their understanding of arithmetic with negative numbers through this collaborative Tarsia challenge. Some answers were duplicated, so students had to think about solving the puzzle, notjustfindingtheanswers.
'Futures Friday' and Globalbridge
EveryFridayon'weekB,'allstudentsparticipatein 'Futures Friday.' This initiative takes place during the Form Period and provides dedicated time for students to engage in personal development activities. As part of this initiative, all students are encouraged to utilize a new platform called Globalbridge, where they can document and reflect on their achievements and experiences while building a profile that showcases their talents.
Oxbridge Helpers
OldGroviansAlexDalton(2019leaver),AbbieNott (2020 leaver), and Lucy Hart (2022 leaver) visited the school on Tuesday to share their experiences studying at Oxford and Cambridge Universities with our Year 13 Oxbridge applicants. They discussed course and college selection, offered advice on personal statements, and talked about balancing academic workload and extracurricular activities.
Dorset Trip
In July, 70 of our Year 7 pupils from last year enjoyed an activity holiday in Dorset, featuring a wide range of activities such as raft-building, axe-throwing, and zip-lining. For many the highlight was the day spent at the adventure park, particularly the mud run and the inflatable course. Toseeallthephotospleaseclickhere.
Netball Tour
The senior netball teams went on an unforgettable tour to South Africa over the summer. In Durban, they played an exhilarating match against Durban Girls School. Beyond the court, they delved into the South African culture, visiting a local cultural village. In Cape Town, the adventure continued as they traded netballs for surfboards, taking surf lessons. The pinnacle of their tour was a thrilling safari experience, encountering the fantastic wildlife found in the South African landscape. This netball tour was not just about competition but also an extraordinary cultural and adventure filled exploration of South Africa'sbeautyanddiversity.
Auschwitz-Birkenau Trip
This summer students embarked on a history trip to Poland, on a profoundly moving journey that included a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Amidst the sombre atmosphere, they had the privilege of meeting a remarkable Holocaust survivor who shared her personal experiences and resilience. The survivor's words and presence served as a powerful reminder of the importance of bearing witnesstohistoryandensuringthatsuchatrocities are never repeated. The trip to Krakow and Auschwitz was an educational and emotionally impactful experience that will stay with them forever.
Cricket Tour
During the summer, our senior cricketers went on a cricket tour of Barbados and St. Lucia. The cricket displayed throughout the tour was outstanding,securingfourimpressivevictoriesout ofsixgamesacrossmultipleformats,includingthe excitement of playing white ball matches under the vibrant Caribbean night skies. The tour was an incredible,fun-filledexperiencethatthecricketers will cherish and reminisce about for years to come.
