House Charity Bake Sales

Grove Awards

House Charity Bake Sales this week were a huge success! Houses had their own stalls in the Quad with the goal of raising the most amount of money for this year’s school charities, Candlelighters and Edukid. In total, the bake sales raised over £900 for the two charities, and the winning House will be announced soon.

This week the latest presentation of Grove Awards took place. Congratulations to Georgie Cothliff, Matilda Couzens, Katie McWilliams, Luca Nelson, Poppy Richards and Abi Stirk, all in Year 7.

Battlefields Trip

Leavers’ Soiree Year 13 thoroughly enjoyed their Leavers' Soiree last week. We wish this talented bunch all the very best in their next steps.

Year 9 finally enjoyed their first History trip with a residential visit to Staffordshire. Students were able to try on and handle First World War equipment, explore a recreated WW1 trench, and pay their respects at the National Memorial Arboretum. A special mention goes to the members of our wreath laying party: Nicole Cater, Ben Vernon, Ibrahim Khan and Isabella Kaye.

Netball Last week was one of the most anticipated netball games of the season…1st Team Rugby vs 1st Team Netball! It was an interesting game and a great send off for our leaving Year 13 rugby and netball players.

Well done to our Y10 students who were part of the YMCA Netball team that won the U16 West Yorkshire Tournament last Sunday. They also got the opportunity to meet Leeds Rhinos player Rhea Dixon who was awarding the prizes.

Rugby Congratulations to Belle Nimmo Y9, who after being selected for Yorkshire under 15s in April, took part in the first of three county festivals where she played brilliantly. She started her rugby journey at Brontë House, where she attended the girl's rugby club and It’s great to see her still involved in Rugby.

Karate Championships Cricket

Well done to Harrison and Lewis Riley who recently took part in the GB Karate Open Championships. Both boys took silver in their individual categories a fantastic achievement! Best of luck for the upcoming Wold Championships in America.

Congratulations to Max Chaplin Y9, as he and his family were invited to Headingley last week to sign his first EPP contract with Yorkshire CCC! Well done to our U14s who progressed to the 3rd round of the Yorkshire Trophy.

Last weekend teams played matches against QEGS Wakefield that ended in some very Fencing tight finishes. A special well done to the U12s who recorded their first victory of the There was a mini pairs tournament held this week at Fencing training. The Year 9s and 7s season. mixed up, and had a great competitive session.

UKMT Maths Challenge

Atkinson Leavers Assembly

Congratulations to the 7 pupils who have been invited to participate in the UKMT Junior Kangaroo and to Will O'Toole Y8, who has been invited to the Junior Maths Olympiad! This is fantastic news and shows the high calibre of our mathematicians in Year 7 and Year 8.

In Atkinson House assembly they said goodbye to their Year 13s. Awards were handed out to prefects for exceptional dedication to Atkinson over the years. A special mention goes to Scarlet Jones with 50 house points, Christian Masiye with 60 and Luke Schoeman with 87.

Science Award Winners

DofE Practice Expedition

Last week, Mr Wright presented the STEM club scientists with their Bronze CREST award for asking an enquiry question and completing a scientific investigation. Mr Mantle also presented the Growth Poster Competition winners with certificates, hopefully one of our students will go on to win the National competition.

Over the weekend, 50 Year 10 students completed their Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. Students walked from Ilkley Moor, round to Baildon, through Shipley and on to Bingley St Ives. Everyone should be incredibly proud of their achievement! Also last weekend, two Old Grovians went to Buckingham Palace to receive their Gold DofE award. it was a wonderful occasion and something for those in Y10 to aspire to.

GCSE Art As GCSE coursework gets underway, here’s just two of the many amazing pieces being created. A beautiful self portrait and ceramic sculpture completed by Isla Bagshaw Y10.

School Wellbeing Award A big thank you to the whole school community who have contributed to our school successfully being re-accredited with the WAS Award. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive and reflects our determination to support our whole community.

Royal Armouries Trip

Green Grove

Year 7 enjoyed a trip out to the Royal Armouries this week. They took part in two workshops. In one they used the Bayeux tapestry as a guide to dress as Saxon and Norman soldiers, and in the other they practiced Saxon battle tactics and learnt more about the three key battles of 1066.

The Green Grove Pioneers have made another successful application to Woodland Trust: Free Trees for Schools. This means that 420 new saplings will be planted in Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Year as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy campaign. However, they need help from students, staff and the local community to clear the space on the riverbank for the saplings over the summer. Co-Curricular Survey Thank you to all parents and pupils who contributed to last week's co-curricular survey. There were 450+ responses, providing lots of positive comments and helpful suggestions. We are currently planning the co-curricular programme for the autumn term where there will be a lot of familiar activities on offer alongside some new ones including golf, football masterclasses, 'drum duelling' and entrepreneurship club.

A Stand out Performance Catriona Cochrane Y13, recently performed in DIVA’S Legally Blonde as a Delta Nu (Pilar).

Catriona was awarded DIVA’S George Pullman 2022 award for outstanding performer and cast member!
