Brass Band Praise Congratulations to Ruby Hawker who competed as the Principle Cornet of Driglington Brass Band in the first section of the brass band areas. Her group placed 9th in the section. Special comments were made towards Ruby in both the adjudicators letters and the commentary from online critics praising her performance!
Maths Challenge Winners Here are some of our UKMT intermediate maths challenge winners with their certificates this week. In total 61 students from Years 9 to 11 were awarded bronze, silver or gold certificates.
High Security Crest Tree Planting around School We have started our own orchard with the planting of five fruit trees, granted to us through the Tree Council. Growing our own produce and sourcing local and seasonal produce are ways we can all reduce our carbon footprint. We look forward to enjoying our fruit for years to come.
This specially designed Woodhouse Grove logo has lots of interesting security features such as fluorescent ink, seen only using a UV light and ink that changes colour when heated. Students have used it in physics as part of a study of the energy levels in atoms. Thank you to Chris Ingham at Communisis for providing the logo.
Swimming
Netball
There was a brilliant performance from the girls swim team last Friday, competing against Harrogate Ladies College. WGS won 135-105, well done girls. Congratulations to Matthew Roberts, Year 10 who competed in the final weekend of the Yorkshire Championships. He got PBs in all his individual races and made a further 4 finals. He has now also qualified for the next level of competitions - the North East Regional Championships which is in April.
A massive congratulations to our U19 Netball Team on their achievement at The National Schools’ Netball Finals last weekend. The girls came 3rd in their group stage and ended the day as the joint 5th Netball team in the country for their age group! This is such an amazing achievement and the whole Grove community is so proud of all that the girls have achieved throughout the competition.
Rugby Congratulations to the U15s squad who had a great day at the Bradford Grammar 7’s tournament on Thursday, finishing undefeated. Also well done to the 1st VII for their win at the Hymers cup 7’s last week with a clinical performance in the Cup Final.
DT Award Last week Bradford Manufacturing Week organisers came into school to present Elizabeth Smith, Year 8 with her certificate for winning the BMW School Recycling waste competition. As Elizabeth won 1st place the school will also receive £500 toward DT equipment .
D&D Club Celebration
Boxing Champ Congratulations to Finlay Sheard, Year 13 who won his first ABA boxing match last week. Fighting at 65kg, Fin beat his opponent in a unanimous points decision.
At Dungeons and Dragons club this week, there were 31 students and most of them were able to level up their character for the first time. We are thrilled to have such a diverse, enthusiastic and welcoming group of students. Each member was gifted with their own D&D bookmark to commemorate this celebration!
High School Musical Last Night the Grove Theatre transformed into East High School as the setting for the Year 7 and 8 production of High School Musical. The wannabe Wildcats, brainiacs, cheerleaders and thespians wowed the audience with a rousing performances of the songs, including All in this Together. Well done to all and 'break a leg' to all those performing tonight.
Science Week This science week the theme was sustainable growth. Students have been building towers from spaghetti, growing plants from beans, testing out biofuels and learning how they are made. The older students have witnessed a dissection, participated in a Q&A with a marine conservationist and had lessons on environmental solutions. The Year 13 biologists have taken part in the Royal Society of Biology's Olympiad competition, and Years 7-9 are working on a poster competition.
The Unusual Suspects Taking inspiration from the great movie “The Usual Suspects”, Mr Sugden’s Year 8 maths class collected data on heights in order to find an estimate of the mean height from a grouped frequency table. Great maths and great movie star poses!
Geography Trip Last week our Year 12 geographers visited Bridlington sand dunes and Flamborough Head collecting data in preparation for the start of their NEA. This week they went to Mappleton to do more field work. What beautiful sunny days!
Vinter House Assembly Challenge Vinter House took part in a team working game to support each other and lead each other to success...Whilst blindfolded! Lots of fun was had and students enjoyed taking on National Careers Week Last week was Careers Week and the the challenge. company Belfour Beatty delivered a presentation to students. They spoke to students about the different paths they could take to work for a multinational company such as themselves.
Riverbank Project Dates There are two more Riverbank sessions left before the Easter Tuesday 22nd and Tuesday 29th March from 4.10-5.40pm. All the saplings from the “Free Trees for Schools Campaign” are now planted and the vast majority of these are on the riverbank. There is still lots of work to do, keeping Himalayan Balsam at bay before it takes hold again. If you would like to join in please contact Mr Lambert.
