Happy Chinese New Year!

This week we celebrated Chinese New Year. On Tuesday evening our boarders enjoyed a delicious feast laid on by our brilliant catering team. Thank you to them for making the occasion so special for our community.

SCRAP Centre Visit The Year 13 BTEC students visited local social enterprise, SCRAP, Centre of Creative, Reuse Play and Learning. Last term the students also raised almost £500 by selling handmade hot chocolate reindeer cones to support Zarach.org, another local social enterprise. The students gained a great insight into business from which they can complete their final piece of BTEC coursework.

Card Making Some of our Year 7 and Year 8 students have been making cards for Edna Clayton who was 101 on 31st January. We are responding to a plea by her care home manager for people to send cards, as she was spending her birthday without family.

House Spirit Vinter were concentrating on team building activities in this week’s house assembly. All students were engaged in producing some awesome cheerleading signs to wave at upcoming events.

Netball

Football

Congratulations to the U19s who are through to the National Schools’ Netball Finals, after coming second in the Regional tournament last weekend. A special well done to Harriet King who was voted player of the tournament by the opposition and umpires. Well done girls and good luck for the finals in March.

It was great to have 8 teams playing at GSAL last weekend, with over 120 boys representing the school in competitive fixtures.

Rugby This week we hosted the Leeds Schools U13 Tournament. Well done to all four Grove squads involved, especially the 13As who narrowly missed out on the final. Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day.

Last week the Development XV went up to Newcastle. They had a great talk and tour of Northumbria University followed by a seriously good fixture at Kingston Park Stadium against a strong Gosforth side.

Cross Country The XC team travelled to Coventry for the King Henry VIII 50th Anniversary XC relays. In their debut at the event our runners raced well and were highly competitive in a field full of older students.

Using a very young team, the WGS Girls came 11th overall. Three of the four girls made it into the top 50: Maisey Bellwood (Year 9) 12th , George Rayner (Year 10) 47th, Charley Clark-Taylor (Year 8!) 50th. In the boys' race the WGS team came 21st against some record-breaking competition, with Archie Peaker (Year 9) 41st, making it into the top 50 on the day.

Congratulations to Max Chaplin, Year 9 on being selected for the Yorkshire Rugby U14 DPP Squad. Max was named as a stand out performer during the initial trial and was asked to join the squad without having to attend secondary assessment.

Cricket U15 girls have been doing some training sessions during lunchtimes this week. We are looking forward to a great season.

Burns Night

Y9 have been having fun with Play Dough to create coastal landforms - wave cut platforms.

It was great to celebrate ‘Burns Night’ as a boarding community. Thank you to Mr Lambert for some fine pipe playing and to our catering department for some tasty haggis! Click the photos below to see Mr Lambert’s bagpiping skills.

House Sport Results Over the past two weeks two house basketball finals have taken place; Year 9 and Year 7 boys. The winner of the Year 9 boys basketball was Stephenson, 2nd Findlay and 3rd Towlson. In the Year 7 boys tournament, Stephenson came 1st, Southerns 2nd and Atkinson 3rd.

In house squash, the junior boys final also took place last week. Atkinson took 1st place, Vinter 2nd and Towlson 3rd.

Friends of Woodhouse Grove The FOWG Pre ❤’d Uniform Team will continue to collect outgoing styles of uniform & sports kit for Changing Stars Malawi We sent a fabulous collection before Christmas, that was due to fly out early this year but with so much to take the charity volunteers will go ahead now & pack this into a container later in the year
