Grove Awards

Boots for Local Asylum Seekers

Congratulations to the following students, some of whom are pictured, who have recently been presented with their Grove Awards.

Throughout January 2024, pupils and parents have been donating old, but still usable football boots, rugby boots and trainers for local asylum seekers in need. The first load has been delivered and we hope that this will help asylum seekers to engage in social activities with each other and the community. The response from the Grove community to this appeal was fantastic.

Year 7: Gus B, Year 8: George A, Matilda F, Ella J Year 9: Sophie M The challenges they completed included appearing in a show in London's West End, robot club, girls' football and volunteering for the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Christmas Fundraising Recent festive activities in school, including Christmas jumper day and the Carol and Christingle services raised over £1,400 for Edukid and Candlelighters.

Globalbridge

Year 13 Enterprise Visit

Year 9 updated their Globalbridge profile whilst listening to a High Performance podcast featuring Kevin Sinfield in which he highlights the importance of not comparing yourself to others.

Year 13 Enterprise and Entrepreneurship students visited The UK Counselling Network CIC last week. They worked with the founder and Managing Director, Sally Benson and gained an understanding of how and why the social enterprise was founded.

The students will use the information gathered to complete their final piece of assessed coursework.

Address To A Haggis Grove and Brontë’s Resident Piper, Mr Lambert, has been busy this week spreading the word and honouring the short, but very colourful life of arguably Scotland’s greatest poet, Robbie Burns.

Mr Lambert’s annual ‘address to a Haggis’ for our boarders enabled them to witness one of the more quirky aspects of British culture!

This year, the haggis was piped in, not only at the Grove, but also at Brontë House.

If you would like to take up the bagpipes, drum or dance with the City of Bradford Pipeband, please contact Mr Lambert.

Odd Balls Awareness Years 12 and 13 had a talk by the Leeds Student Ambassador for Odd Balls to raise awareness of testicular cancer. He supplied guides for our sixth form centre on how to ‘Check Yourself’ and encouraged regular self checking.

Cricket Success Congratulations to our U13 and U15 girls cricketers who are both through to the area finals of the ECB indoor cricket competition and are looking forward to competing in the West Yorkshire round next month.

Oxbridge and Healthcare Advice

Congratulations to Charley C-T, Year 10, who has been selected to run for Yorkshire at the Intercounty Cross Country Championships in March, following her 5th place at the Yorkshire Championships earlier this month.

Well done to Mr Tedd, Mrs Wickens and Mrs Watson who were spotted running in the Boxing Day Chevin Chase 10km by Mr Lambert who piped them on their way.

Year 12 students interested in applying to Oxbridge or a Healthcare course post-18 had an informative presentation about applications and the importance of taking advantage of the Super Curricular Programme.

Representative Rugby Well done to Archie H, Callum HD, Alfie L, Oscar B and Luca T who represented FOWG Bingo Night Yorkshire Academy against Bristol Bears earlier this month and also to Jobe K who A great opportunity to get together with played for Yorkshire against Cheshire. Fergus M, Year 13 made his 1st team debut for Leeds Rhinos on Boxing Day with a win against Wakefield Trinity in front of 9,500 spectators at Headingley Stadium.

Football News

After an absolute nail biter, winning at Queen Ethelberga’s by one goal, our 1st VII have made the semi-finals of the Independent Schools National Cup! In a home grown squad made up of students that all started in Year 7 (or before!) these girls are not only amazing athletes, but are Grovians in every essence of the word.

We are incredibly proud of the squad and the coaching Squad pictured in previous game team.

Congratulation to Rafe M, Year 10, who played for England U16s in December against Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands in two international fixtures at St. George’s Park.

Representative Netball Congratulations to Jess S, Year 12, who was Vice Captain of the U17 Welsh Netballers Game in their curtain raiser for the Welsh Feathers Game.

Well done to Summer A, Year 13 and Grace R and Lexie C, both Year 12, for representing Leeds Rhinos V Manchester Thunder— a tough fixture!

We also have three Year 8 students selected for the Yorkshire ISFA U13 team; Frank W, Harry S and Noah H. After a rigorous trial, the selected boys will represent Yorkshire against the other regions in a festival in April, as well as playing against Leeds United in February.

Well done, boys.

New Sixth Form Building

We are excited to start familiarising staff and sixth formers with the newly completed sixth form building.

The building combines a professional feel, mixed-use space for both collaborative and individual working, as well as state of the art classroom facilities.

Individual Success

Police Advice to Year 11

Congratulations to Tom S, Year 9, who has competed in his first off-road motorcycle riding competition. On a wet and challenging course, Tom completed the 90 minute race without issue – a steep learning curve at such a young age.

During PSCHE, Year 11 listened to DCI Jackson from West Yorkshire Police.

They heard about his experiences as an officer, and heed the valuable advice he offered on Drugs, Knife Crime, Festival Safety and One Punch. He will be coming back in March to talk with our Year 12 and 13.

Congratulations to Kira G, Year 12, who has been selected as a non-travelling reserve for the England Cadet Epee squad at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Battle of The Bands New Zealand in July. Kira must now wait to Don’t miss our epic Battle of the Bands see if she will replace any non-attendees.

Congratulations to Tilly R, Year 12 and Betsy R, evening next Friday. All proceeds to Year 10, who took part in the TDCI Champion charity. Click here for tickets of Champions event in Blackpool last Sunday alongside competitors from across the UK. 2024 will be busy for them as they have been nominated to attend the IDTA Theatre Dance Awards in March and both have qualified for the TDCI World Performer Finals in Blackpool in November.

Tilly has also qualified for the finals of Miss Dance of Great Britain for the 2nd year in a row and was awarded Most Promising Senior Dancer at the Championships in November.

Best of luck to Austin B, Year 8 who has been invited by the Yorkshire Acro and Tumbling Technical Committee to join the Yorkshire Regional Development Squad. His first session is this Sunday.
