Restart a Heart Life Saving Every October we participate in Restart a Heart aimed at increasing awareness of cardiac arrests and the number of people trained in lifesaving CPR and defibrillation. On Monday, pupils across the year groups attended a session to refresh or learn about CPR and what to do in a cardiac emergency. Click to see Year 7 in action
STEM Day We are proud to announce that two of our Year 9 teams came 1st and 2nd at the University of Bradford STEM competition day organised by The Smallpeice Trust to encourage pupils into STEM. Pupils were challenged to build and programme a lego vehicle to navigate around a city with zero human interaction and respond to emergencies. The final part of the day required pupils to give a presentation about their product.
Sixth Form Visit to Produmax Last week, some Sixth Form students visited local precision engineering firm, ProduMax. The trip was very insightful, and included a tour of the factory floor and the opportunity to examine the aerospace components designed and made on site, and used by every single operational plane in the world! Students were also introduced to the range of apprenticeship programmes offered at Produmax.
Grove Awards Congratulations to our final Grove Award winners from 2022/23. Jeffrey Lange and Henry Padley, Year 8, and Eddie Gough and Charlie Hannay, Year 9 received their Y7 and Y8 Grove Awards from last year. Their challenges included being involved in a church panto, a sponsored walk, bouldering and learning German on Duolingo. We are looking forward to presenting more Grove awards this term for 2023/24.

Year 8 have enjoyed modelling river meanders with playdoh to understand the processes involved in forming them.
In Dungeons and Dragons this year we have a record breaking 8 tables running each week with the help of our students who are using their skills from previous years and have stepped up to lead as Dungeon Masters.
Year 9 have been studying tropical rainforests and how animals have adapted to living within the forest. They have considered where in the forest animals live and how they cope with the challenging climate. Some well-researched and very detailed work. Year 12 geographers spent a day in Ilkley collecting data as part of their A-level course. They collected environmental quality data, took noise readings and noted car registrations to look at income.
Leeds Youth Parliament Congratulations to Year 12 student Rakelmi Williams-Colley, who has been shortlisted for the Leeds Youth member of parliament. Rakelmi is one of only 6 to get through to voting stage. Rakelmi wrote a manifesto illustrating her ideas that the youth of today should have more of an impact on our political system and have more opportunities to get politically involved. The final round is a democratic vote, so let’s get behind Rakelmi; voting link will be available after half term.
The Songwriting Club this year, originally named 'Lyric Lab', has evolved and we have renamed it 'The Creatives' as our students' lyrics have led to ideas for poems, novels, songs and also instrumental tracks! There have been collaborations across year groups and some of our students have taken a lead in mentoring younger students, providing advice and guidance through the creative process. Our music technology students are managing recording sessions in the studio and we look forward to sharing their fantastic work later this term.
Black History Month Black History Month has been celebrated across numerous year groups and curriculum subjects. Year 8 students have been writing poems specifically celebrating black women in history including Maya Angelou, Katherine Johnson and Clementine Wamariya, who lived through the Rwandan genocide and started a new life inspiring others.
Year 9 Enterprise Day
Recording Studio Visit
This week, Business and Economics hosted the annual Year 9 Enterprise Day. Students were challenged to create a cereal brand and a cereal based product that could break into this highly lucrative, but competitive sector. The business teams carried out market research to identify gaps, identified a specific target market and developed a product with a unique selling point. They created a logo, a slogan, designed packaging and put together a pricing and promotional strategy. Finally they presented their business pitches to a panel of judges who were very impressed. Every single student across the year group rose to this challenge and we have some budding future entrepreneurs.
Our music technology students experienced life in a professional studio for the day, with legendary producer Simon Humphreys at The Chairworks in Castleford. They learned some of the arts and science behind studio recording and are now working over stems and stereo mixes - we are looking forward to the results. Click here for video

Over the last year or so WhatsApp have introduced new features so we are sharing this updated guide with parents so that they can ensure the most appropriate settings are applied for their child. University of Cambridge Visitor

Last week, 20 students from the Sixth Form attended a lunchtime talk delivered by Dr Matthias Dörrzapf from St John's College, University of Cambridge. Students were given an insight into life as an undergraduate at Cambridge as well as information on the application process. Students were fully engaged with the talk and asked some really thought-provoking questions.
We have installed two fast electric vehicle chargers (22kW) next to The Cabin which are available to parents at weekends only. If you are watching a match and would like to charge for an hour or two, please use the QR code on the side of the charging pedestal, from which you can download the Monta app and start paying to charge your car.
Year 9 Assembly This week, Form 9E presented an assembly to the rest of their year group which they had written, planned and organised themselves in its entirety over the course of this half term.
UKMT Senior Maths Challenge And the results are in!!! We are delighted with our results this year with 28 Bronze, 19 Silver and 6 Gold certificates being awarded across the three year groups. Best in school was Thomas Craven, Year 13, best in Year 12 was Charlie Wright and best in Year 11 was Jamie Roberts. All three, along with Philip Wright (Y13), Noah Melake (Y12) and Ruby Xiong (Y12), gained a gold award and have been invited to participate in the next round, the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo. Well done to everyone.

Call out for Mathematicians
A quick look into DT saw Mr Allison talking to Year 10 students about vacuum press and block moulding lamination.
11 students from Years 7 and 8 have completed all Parallelogram puzzles for this half term. Each Thursday at 3pm, students have access to a new set of online mathematical challenges set by Simon Singh, a best-selling author. There is a separate Parallelogram for year groups Y7 to Y11. If anyone else would like to join in please let Mr Walker know.
Congratulations to Kira Grahamslaw, Year 12, who represented Team GB in Hungary recently as part of the British Fencing Cadet Squad. Kira came an impressive 118/250 in the individual competition and her team came 24/40. Congratulations to Alex Steel, Year 9, on winning individual bronze and also doubles gold at the Yorkshire Badminton Championships.

Our 1st XV and 2nd XV won their Friday Night Lights matches against Harrogate Grammar School. Thanks to everyone who supported the boys.
Congratulations to our U13 footballers who beat Bootham 6-1 in the ISFA Bowl competition, with a hat trick for Noah Hargreaves. Our 1st XI are also through to the second round and are awaiting the draw. Narrow losses for both our U15 boys and girls teams in their ISFA Bowl matches.
Cross Country In our block fixture against GSAL, there were wins for 1st XV, U16, U14 and U13A teams. In the U18 schools cup, the 1st XV put in a great performance to beat Lancaster RGS. Congratulations to Alfie Longstaff and Archie Hurford who have both been invited to train with the England U18 squad over half term. Great results in the Leeds Schools Cross Country with two first places for Charley Clark-Taylor in Inter Girls and Ned Waterhouse in Senior Boys. This week, we hosted the first round of the English Schools XC Cup. 3 of our 4 teams qualified for the regional round on 11 November with some great individual runs.
Netball News Our 1st VII have been very busy recently, beating RGS Newcastle in the National Cup, winning the Super 7s Tournament beating GSAL in the final, but registering a loss in the SIS cup to a very strong Cheadle Hulme side. There was also a win for both the 1st and 3rd VIIs in a midweek fixture versus GSAL. Our block fixture against Bradford Grammar resulted in wins for 1st VII, 2nd VII, 16A, 16B, 15B, 14A and 12B. Our U14A also won their SIS match against Harrogate Grammar. Some great results.
Hats off for European Day Year 7 students made a hat to celebrate European Day of Languages in the annual WGS Hats Off for European Day of Languages Competition. They had to create a language/country themed hat them during their French lessons. The best 3 from each form were chosen and they will be judged over half term with the overall winners announced in Assembly after half term. Some very creative ideas, well done everyone.
