Official Playground Opening

It was a beautiful day for the official opening of our new adventure playground. Thank you to the ABA who work tirelessly to collect funds for projects such as this.

A spokesperson for the ABA said; “We are absolutely thrilled that this project has finally been completed. It seems to have been a long time coming, with covid restrictions in place. However, to complete it so soon is fantastic for the school and the children, who are now able to enjoy it this Spring term.”

Pre-Nursery walked to the post box as part of their topic of ‘people who help us’. They posted out a special letter for Mother’s Day.

For St Patricks day, Nursery made some green four leafed clover leaves and for Science Week they made a rainbow using tissue paper to absorb the coloured water.

Gardening Club KS1 Gardening Club were joined by Mr Lambert this week and learnt about the safe use of gardening tools. They set to work weeding and raking the raised beds.

The potatoes are chitting up and will be planted at Easter. Mange-tout peas and sweetcorn are already sown and 3 varieties of onion sets are planted and the poly tunnel will soon undergo a makeover so hopefully gardening club can grow tomatoes cucumbers, chillis and peppers.

Year 1 at Gardening Club and doing star jumps in Maths

The children in Reception have been taking part in 'Outdoor Explorer' sessions. They learnt about buds and how they keep new leaves and flowers safe and warm before unfurling. Then they collected different buds to use for observational drawings.

Year 1 have been learning about time this week. They tried to understand how long one minute lasts and estimated how many times they could complete all sorts of activities in one minute and then timed themselves. Activities included writing their name and very energetic star jumps!

Red Nose Day in Ashdown Lodge Loads of fun today across Ashdown Lodge!

To finish off World Book Week, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 were visited by author Cathy Oakley Calvert who wrote Ned, Go To Bed. She brought along the star of her book, Ned the sheepdog too!

Year 2 have been learning about forces and movement. This week they investigated the effect of different length tails on their flying fish when they dropped them.

Year 2 also became weather forecasters.

They discussed how weather forecasts are created and how satellites and historical weather patterns are used to predict the weather in the future. A sunny weekend?

Netball Some great Netball recently with the U10s winning all their games at the U11 B team festival at Gateways and our U9s in action at the BGS Festival. The A Team won 4 and drew 2; the B Team won 3, drew 1, lost 2.

Well done everyone, great teamwork.

Come on Leicester Tigers!

Year 6 enjoyed a great day at Leicester Tigers. It started with a training session, then they watched Old Grovian James Whitcombe play for Leicester Tigers against London Irish.

Cross Country Our cross country team ran in their latest race this week at Bradford Grammar School. Everyone paced themselves well, with Tom Goodison and Orlaith Curtis our first runners home.

Science Week We kicked off British Science Week 2022 with the aim of smashing scientific stereotypes.

With the help of our Einstein look-a-like, we learned about the diversity of people and jobs in the science industry today. We also launched a Science Week poster competition (see Seesaw for more information). Of course, no science week assembly would be complete without a few amazing science demonstrations: secret messages were revealed and stripy toothpaste for elephants was just the thing to spread the science bug!

Year 5 gained first hand experience of being a child growing up in Victorian times. Life in a workhouse was tough! The children packed in Guardian’s role play, rag rigging, schooling and a quick trip to the outdoor privy at Ripon Museum! They even got a special treat of brownies in their packed lunch for winning the World Book Day door jacket competition.

Aladdin in Trouble Next week sees the premier of the long-anticipated Year 3 and 4 Panto 'Aladdin' and we wanted to share this picture of our Aladdin, Edward (and his sister Erin), with Matt Croke, who was the lead in Disney's Aladdin in the West End! Matt is a family friend and showed Edward both backstage and on stage.

Although a couple of years ago, this was obviously a premonition of things to come!

Y3 and Y4 are working hard in rehearsals.

HMC Chess The U11 and U9 Chess teams travelled to Inspired by the work of Paul Nash, Year 6 are QEGS on Tuesday to take part in the HMC working on their fantastic WW1 scenes, as Chess competition. All players did seen through the eye of a war horse. themselves proud in the 'Swiss format' tournament, playing six matches in total. A special mention to Rehan Kumar who finished the day undefeated. They thought about every move and concentrated really hard. Well done everyone!

High School Musical at the Grove Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Grove Theatre to watch the Year 7 and 8 production of High School Musical. It was lovely to see the familiar faces of previous Brontë children on the stage.
