TEAM PICKS Nina Eggens, Marketing Manager I love bluegrass and I am excited to see ‘nashville troubadour’ Woody Pines coming to the Barn in April, playing his intensely catchy rhythms, jumpy lyrics and wildly delirious sense of fun. That is bound to be one foot stompin’ evening, not quickly forgotten.

HEBRIDES ENSEMBLE

Eastern European composers Dvořák, Janáček and Bartók travelled extensively, absorbing folk influences and imbuing their music with traditional forms. Nigel Osborne is one of the most travelled composers alive today whose thirst for foreign cultures has taken him all over the globe.

In the era of the French Revolution, Jeanne and her brother Jérôme leave Marseille for Paris in support of the revolutionary effort that is taking over the capital. Few ballets can properly depict the Bolshoi’s overflowing energy and fiery passion as can Alexei Ratmansky’s captivating revival of Vasily Vainonen’s The Flames of Paris. With powerful virtuosity and some of the most stunning pas de deux, the Bolshoi Ballet displays an exuberance almost too enormous for the Moscow stage.

LIVE STREAMED FROM CALIFORNIA: NEWTON HARRISON’S VISION FOR SCOTLAND AND THE DEE CATCHMENT The Barn is delighted to host the launch of the Center for the Study of the Force Majeure’s vision for Scotland and the Dee valley in the form of a guiding narrative film exploring the implications of climate change and provoking thought and action for how we might adapt to the challenges as a diverse group of communities of interest.

The screening of this mini-documentary and continuing conversations will inform the development of a public exhibition and related events in September 2018.

The Letter J presents a charming, living storybook about loss, longing and the treasures of memory and imagination. Kris will be performing a ‘best of’ set featuring all the key songs from his first decade and some new material played live for the first time.

Nashville-based roots music hotshots Woody Pines have wowed the crowds on both sides of the Atlantic and last time they toured the UK, reviewers unanimously declared them to be one of the most entertaining acts on the Americana circuit. These Muddy Roots Records stars count BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris as a fan - he invited them to appear on the stage he hosted at the C2C event in London’s 02 arena. Claire Hastings is a folksinger/songwriter based in Glasgow. Since winning BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2015, Claire’s career has gone from strength to strength. Performance highlights include singing with Lulu, Jamie Cullum, and Deacon Blue at BBC Music Day, and taking centre stage for BBC Proms in the Park with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. FLOURISH: EXHIBITION

Tuesday 6 March - Saturday 17 March 12pm - 4pm* FLOURISH, our wellbeing project emphasising the benefits of writing in nature, was launched in May 2017 by Writer-In-Residence, Elaine Reid. Based in the Wild Garden, Elaine created a giant word installation for the project launch which included 23 acrylic words hung in the trees.

These became the focus for a variety of workshops for local schools and the wider community including writing for wellbeing, visual poetry and labyrinth walking. Breathe, a collaboration with choreographer, Mhairi Allan also used these words as their inspiration for a series of three found poetry and movement workshops.

This exhibition brings together work created by all the community groups involved in the project alongside Elaine’s own work - a series of visual poems based on the words which became her ‘Temenos 23’.

JOHN WALLACE: THE SAME HILLSIDE

As part of the Barn’s contributions to National Climate Change Week, John Wallace (video artist) and Professor Pete Smith (University of Aberdeen) present a looped, multiscreen audiovisual installation. An immersive audiovisual exploration of human links to upland ecosystems, filmed and recorded in the remote but highly productive area of Southern Scotland where three mighty rivers, the Annan, Tweed and Clyde, begin.

The Same Hillside captures the diverse experiences and opinions of those involved locally with drinking water supply, motorway maintenance, river and fisheries management, environmental restoration, sheep farms, forestry, wind and biomass power, and environmental monitoring and uncovers their views on current impacts and future implications of ongoing climate change.

TALK: THE SAME HILLSIDE DEBATE

Join Professor Pete Smith, John Wallace and guests for a chance to hear about their long-running collaboration. Find out about the science that lies behind and informs their work, the technologies linking the installation to the environment, and the latest evidence on climate change from one of the UK’s leading experts in the field. The talk is followed by an open forum where attendees can challenge scientist, artist and each other on the issues raised, and debate routes ahead.

Wattle and Daub is a unique collaboration in Willow and Ceramics with Helen Jackson and Hilary Duncan. Over the past year, Helen and Hilary have explored the connections between these two ancient skills. Their exhibition is the story of this process, with a selection of the work created along the way. The year turns not in a circle but in a spiral.

Each returning season is different. Changes may be small, shifting backwards and forwards or edging slowly towards a new condition.

Changes may be sudden, as when there is a major flood. The drawings and prints in this exhibition spring from observations of such changes in Crathes made over a number of years.

There will be an opening event on Saturday 19 May between 2pm - 4pm and a closing event on Sunday 10 June between 2pm - 4pm.

ARTISTS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME As part of the Barn’s ongoing commitment to supporting the professional development of artists in Scotland, we offer a year round programme of residencies, commissions, research and CPD opportunities.

MICRO RESIDENCIES

The programme includes a number of funded Micro Residencies ring –fenced for Aberdeen/ Aberdeenshire–based artists, wishing to undertake periods of research, develop their practice or project idea in a supportive environment.

Lynn Shaw was the recipient of our January Micro Residency.

LYNN SHAW

Lynn Shaw is a dance artist and choreographer currently studying a MED in Learning and Teaching in Dance at The Royal Conservatoire, Glasgow. As part of her research, Lynn’s interests lie in how lived experiences of mental health can be translated through movement and choreography.

In 2016 See Me Mental Health and Glasgow Film Theatre commissioned a short dance documentary Borderline which was screened as part of the Scottish Mental Health and Arts Festival (SMHAF).

During the micro-residency Lynn explored different forms; text, storytelling and choreography based on her own personal experiences of Borderline Personality Disorder. She aims to tour a live sharing of this work, alongside the film, to help raise awareness of this often-misunderstood mental health condition.

ADVANCE BOOKING RECOMMENDED We encourage advance ticket purchasing to avoid disappointment. If tickets are still available for events they will be sold at the Box Office half an hour before the performance.

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS We do not offer refunds unless the event is a sell-out and we are able to re-sell your tickets on to someone on the waiting list. If we manage to re-sell your tickets, you will be refunded the cost of the tickets, minus the booking fee.

CONCESSIONS Concession means anyone who is claiming benefit or unemployed, in full-time education, senior citizens and disabled (free entry for access assistant).

SEATING Please note that seating is unreserved. To ensure you get your preferred seat, or if you are coming as a large party who wish to be seated together, please arrive in good time. Doors open half an hour before performances are advertised to start.

WORKSHOPS The Barn reserves the right to cancel workshops that are under subscribed. To ensure your place on our workshop programme please book in advance. Block booking registration ends one week prior to the sessions starting.

In the event of a cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the venue or artists/ performers, all sales will be refunded including the booking fee.
