welcome to vets fest 2026 from wooden spoon CEO sarah webb
It’s a real pleasure to welcome you to Vets Fest 2026 – a brilliant day of rugby, friendship, fun and, most importantly, coming together to support Wooden Spoon. Vets Fest is about so much more than what happens on the pitch. It’s about the friendships, the camaraderie and the incredible rugby community that comes together to help change children’s lives. Every time you pull on a shirt, cheer from the sidelines or get involved behind the scenes, you’re helping Wooden Spoon give children and young people living with disabilities or facing disadvantage the chance to PLAY, LEARN, BE SAFE and THRIVE. And there are plenty of ways you can continue to support us beyond today. September is our Wooden Spoon membership drive, and we’d love you to help us grow our family. If you’re already a member, why not encourage a friend, teammate or colleague to join? Refer a new member and you could be in with a chance of winning a £250 Red Letter Days gift voucher. ( Page 16) Could your rugby club become a Wooden Spoon Partner Club Champion? Come and visit our Partner Club Kiosk in the main marquee to meet the team, find out how it works and discover how your club can benefit while making a difference to children in your local community. A huge thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, supporters, the Wooden Spoon team and everyone taking part today. Your support makes days like Vets Fest possible and helps us continue to use the power of rugby to change children’s lives. So, enjoy the rugby, catch up with friends, make some new ones and have a fantastic day!

welcome from iain stewart Wooden Spoon Northumberland chair
Alreet, we’re under starters orders - welcome to Vet’s Fest 2026! On behalf of Wooden Spoon Northumberland, thank you to everyone who has made today possible. A special thank you goes to our fantastic hosts at Tynedale Rugby Club for opening their gates, lending us their pitches, tolerating a sizeable gathering of veteran rugby players, and doing it all with the usual Tynedale warmth, good humour and can-do spirit. We are hugely grateful for your hospitality and support. Thanks also to the Northumberland Committee, led by the unflappable Dennis Hetherington, our brilliant HQ team, all the volunteers and, of course, the players, without whom today would just be a few nervous organisers staring at an empty pitch and wondering whether the bar was open yet. To the players, thank you for supporting Wooden Spoon and helping us raise funds for children and young people across our region. Looking around today, there’s a lot of rugby experience in the paddock and no shortage of old warhorses under starter’s orders. Like racehorses, many still look impressive at the start line - though admittedly some now need a longer warm-up, softer ground and a steward’s enquiry just to get back up after a tackle. Some of us still have the hands, the heart and the chat - it’s just the knees, hamstrings and recovery time that are no longer odds-on favourites. Whether you’re from Newcastle, Northumberland, or somewhere beyond the Tyne where a stottie sounds like something you’d build a wall with, it’s brilliant to have you here. Enjoy the rugby, enjoy the crack, and remember: at Vet’s Fest, the real contest is who can still walk properly tomorrow. And of course, don’t miss the pantomime horse races - a magnificent spectacle of flapping horse heads, wandering back legs, questionable steering and two grown adults thundering down the home straight like Red Rum after a Greggs. Howay the lads and lasses, let’s have a belter! Gan canny and divvent forget to stretch before you sit doon. Thank you for supporting Wooden Spoon.

welcome from tynedale rfc from Tynedale RFC President Neil Foster
As President of Tynedale Rugby Club I am delighted to welcome Wooden Spoon back to Tynedale Park for VetsFest 2026. It is an honour to be asked to host this fantastic festival of rugby for the second year in succession and particularly pleasing to be able to host the event in the 150th anniversary year of the club. With even greater numbers attending this year it promises to be a very lively celebration! The charitable work undertaken by Wooden Spoon is well known and greatly appreciated by all in the Rugby World and we are delighted to welcome so many veterans this weekend to further and celebrate this wonderful charity. Tynedale now proudly boasts one of the largest mini and youth rugby memberships in the north of England with an ever-expanding roll call of international and representative honours amongst our alumni. However we still proudly retain our ethos as an amateur club, operating to a highly professional and competitive standard. We recognise that being located on the south bank of the Tyne in the most northerly county in England may present a considerable travel challenge to some participants. As a club, we are blessed with wonderful facilities and a stunning setting. We hope that whilst visiting us you will take time to experience the countryside and community which you will find in the Tyne Valley. But above all enjoy the festival and continue to generously support Wooden Spoon!

giving children a chance Wooden Spoon exists to help the 1.2 million children living with a disability, the 30% of children growing up in poverty, and the 3 million children experiencing mental health issues to live their best lives. Our work is shaped around four core themes : Giving children the chance to: Play, Learn, Thrive and Be Safe. Across all four themes, we fund sensory rooms and gardens, specialist medical and sports equipment, playgrounds, sports programmes, health and wellbeing initiatives and education projects.
To be safe
We fund inclusive playgrounds, sports facilities and programmes that enable children to be active, confident and connected, removing barriers to sport and inclusive play.

England: Accessible playground Wooden Spoon has helped Kingfisher School in Abingdon create a more inclusive playground, with a wheelchair swing and accessible roundabout. The new equipment gives children with complex physical disabilities the chance to play alongside their friends, building confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.
scotland: Creative Learning Space Wooden Spoon has funded a new creative learning space at An Tobar and Mull Theatre with specialist equipment and activity aids. The sensory-friendly space helps children and young people overcome barriers to taking part in the arts, supporting inclusion, wellbeing, creativity and confidence.
Wales: Outdoor Forest Centre Wooden Spoon funded a new ‘Nature Nook’ at West Monmouth Comprehensive School in Pontypool, creating an all-year outdoor learning space for children with social and behavioural needs. The space will help develop confidence, self-esteem and social skills, while connecting pupils with nature and the outdoors.
Ireland: outdoor play and sensory area Wooden Spoon funded an inclusive outdoor play and sensory area at Killard School for children with severe and profound learning difficulties, featuring play sheds, a sensory pathway and accessible play equipment.
