It’s Election Season

By now all proprietary members (Young Professionals, Single Golf, Family Golf) should have received a ballot for both the election of the new Board of Directors and the approval of the bylaw amendments. It is only proprietary members who are authorized to vote and to serve on the Board. There are four available seats on the Board. The Nominating Committee presented five candidates for the ballot. The committee approached several members who qualified, but obviously, not everyone was willing or able to serve starting next year. Some were requested to serve on a committee to gain further experience for future consideration. The general membership was requested to present possible candidates for the Board. The bylaw amendments are not proposing any sweeping changes. The ballot webpage provides all the details. The revisions are mostly related to notification timelines to members and the ability to react quickly to suspend a member if there is a severe violation (or worse) while still holding a high standard of due process for continued suspension or even expulsion. Scan this QR code to view the bylaw amendments, and see page 15 for nominee biographies.

Moving Out, Moving In...

As you know, there have been many staff changes in the last couple of years, and the Club has not been immune to the worker shortage and exodus from area. It seems like it escalated coming out of COVID, as the Club started expanding and ramping up services. The NY Times recently reported that 7 out of 10 restaurants nationally stated they did not have sufficient staff. We do in fact employ many students. Their availability is often purely seasonal and has a punctuation point related to graduation. When just considering management positions, we had families from our team move to Southern CA, Monterey (2), Pebble Beach, Scottsdale, Coeur d’Alene (2), Sonoma, La Quinta and Kansas. The positive point of view is that there are many more families moving into the Lodi area when compared to those leaving, many more. The Club is benefiting in countless ways on how the community is growing both with residences and businesses. The Club, as a result, has an especially bright outlook on membership and employee retention and recruitment.

... and Moving Up!

I do have the privilege to formally announce the promotions and additions of

some new team members. Evelyn Chinchiolo is our new Office Manager. Carrie Sterling has returned to assist in training Evelyn, for which we are eternally grateful. Evelyn has hit the ground running and will be acquiring all functions in the business office. She will also ultimately update some of our administrative processes as well as technology. We have a small administrative staff so by design everyone needs to be cross trained. A fun fact, Evelyn is the twin sister of longtime waitress Teresa Byrne. We are proud to announces that Ryan Williams PGA has joined our team in the golf operation as Player Development Professional. Ryan has extensive experience with juniors and adults, in both individual and group settings. He will be continuing and enhancing the instructional programming, including the Youth Golf Camps, Adult Group Instruction and Operation 36. On the sports and fitness side of the operation, I am happy to announce that Holly Cummings has been promoted to Sports Complex Manager. Holly has unmatched people skills. She will be scheduling and overseeing the staff at the fitness center and will be expanding her role as the seasonal activities unfold. There is still a plan to add an additional Tennis Professional who will focus on weekday evening and weekend tennis activities. Please greet these new managers and thank them in advance for their contributions!

Show Off Your Club this Holiday Season

You surely have already heard about Jessica Johnston coming onboard as Catering & Event Manager. Jessica is the individual who is best suited to assist you with any party planning, both big and small. She is already busy booking holiday parties for the end of the year and even weddings for next year. It is never too early to make your holiday or dining reservations. The holidays are a super busy season where we attempt to accommodate as many members as possible. When looking at the event calendar into the future, members will see a couple of special events and/or themed dinners each month. In ending, you are encouraged to try something new at the Club, an amenity that you have yet to enjoy. It might be a tournament. It might be an event. It might be an activity. It might be a class. Your Club has so much to offer. Discovering something new will make the club even more meaningful to you. See you around the Club!

CAPITAL PROJECTS Prioritizing

I frequently receive feedback from our membership on various ideas that will improve their Club experience. Some examples of these are replacing the greens, adding lines at the bottom of the pool for lap swimmers, adding more space in the gym for free weights, resurfacing the cracked tennis courts, or replacing the furniture in the lounge area by the putting green. This is often followed up with “don’t we have a bunch of money for stuff like this?” The answer is never that simple!

As a Board, we do our best to prioritize projects that will best serve the majority of our membership and provide the greatest chance to get a return on our investment. This return on investment comes in the form of duespaying members or some other positive cash flow (i.e. the solar project, which will eliminate our monthly electricity bill). This can be a difficult balancing act as we try to do these projects while preserving our “savings account” and providing the best possible membership experience.

As you may know, inflation has dramatically risen in 2022, from increased fertilizer costs (up 30% year-over-year) to increased food and labor costs (up 20% year-overyear). These inflationary pressures, as well as the interest rate increases, have put the Board in a defensive financial position. We believe it’s imperative to maintain a reasonable savings account so we can continue to pay our bills if a recession were to impact our dues line in 2023 and beyond. The hope is that costs will stabilize, and the dues line will provide additional discretionary income we can put toward more capital projects. The Board has a list of projects we continuously update and prioritize so when we identify discretionary funds, we can quickly allocate as needed.

We have completed some big projects in 2022 (solar, practice green, patio project, new well) and our plan is to digest all this work, let the dust settle and see what 2023 brings before we make additional capital commitments.

As always, please keep the ideas coming….this is “our” Club and we all want it to be the best!

Board of Directors Meeting Highlights

At its September meeting, the Board of Directors established an official Dog Policy. Here’s what it entails (pun intended):

• Inside the Clubhouse & Fitness Center — Certified Service Dogs only. Different from a “support animal,” a Service Dog has advanced training in assisting humans.

• At the outdoor amenities (patios, swimming pool, tennis courts) — Dogs must be on leashes and controlled by its owner at all times. Owners with dogs that are becoming a nuisance to fellow members will be asked to remove the dog from the Club.

• On the Golf Course — No dogs allowed on the course ground. A dog is permitted to be leashed and riding with you in a cart, but cannot be let lose on the course. This also means taking a dog on a walk on the course — even when leashed — is not permitted.

The Board also approved the purchasing of new kitchen equipment. The goal of this purchase is to create more efficiency on the line — and to deliver quicker meals to our members. We’re excited to see these new efficiencies realized.

Lastly, golfers can rejoice — the Golf Dress Code requirement that all men’s shirts should be tucked in has been stricken from the official Club Dress Code!

Ready or not, here comes the holidays!

Our new Catering & Events Manager, Jessica Johnstone, has some really creative and exciting ideas for upcoming events. If you haven’t been to a Club event this fall, you are going to want to mark your calendar for some upcoming entertaining nights! October means Halloween and Jessica is putting together not just our annual Halloween Fest for our kids and families, but is also organizing a “Witches Ball” slated for Sat, Oct 29! This adult Halloween party is strategically planned to begin right after our Couples Twilight Halloween event ends. What will happen when witches and goblins colide with spooky golfers??? You’ll never know unless you sign up! More details will be coming very soon!

I also want to give everyone a heads up on Thanksgiving! We are planning a Thanksgiving To Go meal package again this year so that our staff can enjoy the holiday with their families. But, apparently, there’s a turkey shortage (like everything else these days!). We have secured ONLY 56 turkeys and once they’ve sold out, that’s it! We cannot get a single extra bird after that. I’m thinking if restaurants and large clubs like us are seeing this shortage, the rest of us will also see the shortage in the grocery stores this holiday. Plan ahead, or serve ham!

Have a Spooky October!

FALL AERIFICATION & EVAPO TRANSPIRATION ED

The weather for August and the beginning of September was very hot. We had 13 of 31 days of above average 100-degree days. The start of September was extremely hot — the first nine days were above 100 degrees, topping out at 114 degrees. The heat was only one component of the weather that was challenging. The humidity was also very high. The humidity makes it very challenging to irrigate correctly, because the moisture does not go anywhere, and the course just does not dry out. It may be surprising, but on the very hot days we had we put out less water than normal. The tools we use on the course are handheld soil moisture meters and our weather station. Utilizing these tools to irrigate are very important. The weather station is of critical importance. It has technology that measures temperature, solar radiation, wind, humidity and rain. All these measurements go into a calculation it produces, called Evapo transpiration(ET). ET is a measurement of how much moisture plants lose from evaporating through its leaves. When we irrigate daily, we use this number to determine how much water to apply to an area. This data can swing drastically as well. Just this last week, we had an outside temperature of 110 degrees with an ET of .23”. The next day, we had an outside temperature of 83 degrees and a ET of .12”. That 27-degree swing in temperature reduced our ET by .11” — a big change in one day. In early August, our weather station was vandalized and was inoperable for several weeks. Sourcing parts was a problem because of supply chain issues. We had to do a lot of guessing and calling other local courses to get ET data. The data received was not an exact number because of the different areas. Our weather station produces site specific data for us. I hope this explains how critical our weather station is.

Through the year, I keep a log of many things we do on the course and when we do them. Certain crew members and I evaluate what worked and what did not. Through this evaluation, we modified our agronomic plan for the fall season. This leads us into my next topic. Last fall and winter, our Bermuda grass struggled and got really beat up during the winter. This is partly due to the fact that we did not raise the height of cut on it early enough. Bermuda grass needs to develop a cushion of turf to take the abuse from cart traffic. Last week, I reached out to the USGA for recommendations on a new protocol we could try to improve the conditions of the Bermuda this winter. From that conversation, we determined that we need to add 1/4 lb more Nitrogen to our fertilizer plan and raise

our height of cut from where we are now at 1/2” to 5/8”. They will look a little shaggy till everything gets to the same height. We will keep them at this height until March. Doing this should help the dormant turf perform better this fall and winter. The one downside of this is the fairways will not have the same type of roll they do now.

We are preparing for aerification starting on the Lake 9 Sun, Oct 2 at noon. The course will be closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday so the crew can work on greens tees and start aerifying the rough areas. On the greens, we will be using 1/2" x 5.75" tines, followed by topdressing with kilned dried sand. We have lots of equipment to prepare and materials to bring in for the project. When we are done with the greens, we will be overseeding the greens with Bentgrass. Doing this will help establish a higher percentage of Bentgrass to Poa Annua. Over the last few years of doing this, the percentages in the greens have flipped. We used to have predominately Poa Annua 80% to 20% Bentgrass. Now on most greens we are approaching 80% Bentgrass to 20% Poa Annua. This has been made possible by overseeding and the use of plant growth regulators, limiting the growth of Poa Annua. Doing this allows the more aggressive Bentgrass to out populate the Poa. It's not a 100% cure to eradicate Poa; it's a numbers game.

It looks like we will have great weather after aerification for quick healing. We have been fertilizing prior to aerification so the greens are already growing going into aerification. This will help speed up the process. Many courses fertilize the day of aerification. The problem with that is it usually takes several days for the fertilizer to become available for the turf to use thus slowing the recovery.

The new practice green has reopened. The chipping green will be reopened after aerification. During the summer, we pushed lowering the height of cut too fast right as the temperatures got hot. That burnt out a bunch of areas. The crew has plugged out and repaired many of the areas. Because the weather has cooled down, we are getting great growth on it. The height of cut on it is equal to the rest of the greens on the course. We mow the greens at .100. For older greens in the California Valley that is very low. We push the envelope on our agronomy plan to get them to perform the best we can in the weather conditions Mother Nature gives us. Sometimes we are at her mercy.

The Holidays are coming...

This is the perfect time to get a jump start on goals and resolutions! Why not create a Fall BOOM (short for blow your own mind) Goal? I like to create a new fitness goal each month — something that’s not too difficult to acheive within one month. This month, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, my BOOM Goal is to do 30 days of yoga (at least 30 minutes a day), and I’ve combined it with a fundraiser. I saw the idea on the American Cancer Society’s Facebook Page. As of this writing, I’m 4 for 4 and have raised $75 for the American Cancer Society! My BOOM Goal last month was to do strength training for my upper body five days a week, and am happy to report I accomplished it! Another BOOM Goal I’ve seen is walking 35 miles in a month (or if you’re already a walker, you can add another 35 miles to your average monthly miles). The idea is to make something you already want to do, or like to do occassionally, a little bit harder. What have you got to lose? Your future self is waiting to thank you for starting today!

Board of Director Nominees for the 2022 Ballot

Mark Berry (incumbant) — Mark Berry has been a member of the Club since 2003 and was appointed to the Board nearly three years ago to fill an open seat. He has been a member of the Executive Committee, Bylaws Revision Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee.

Mark and his wife, Jennifer, are recently empty nesters as one of their daughters has relocated to Sacramento and two others are on active duty with the Army. Mark is a partner in the San Joaquin law firm of Mayall, Hurley P.C, where he represents governmental entities and their public safety employees; insurance companies and their insureds; and building industry contractors. Mark is past president of the San Joaquin County Bar Association and has served for many years on the St Anne’s Finance Council.

Stan Demski (incumbant) — I became a member of the Club in 2004 and prior to that I was on my Father’s membership who joined in 1977. I served as a Director on the Board from 2011 to 2016. In 2019 the Board appointed me to fill a vacancy on the Board and I have served as Chairman of the Tennis and Pool Committee ever since. I am seeking another term because I love our beautiful club and I believe I can help the Board and the management team keep WGCC the best it can be.

Personally I am a Dentist and have owned and operated my practice for the past 25 years. I have two grown children in college and they grew up here at the club golfing and attending many camps and social activities and events. As a Director I intend to bring matters the membership identifies to the attention of the Board as I have been doing since I began as a Board member. I appreciate your consideration.

Nolan Person — I was born and raised in Lodi and have lived here my entire life. My wife, Claire, and I have two young boys, Henry (6) and Samuel (3). Our family joined the Club in March 2021. We enjoy using the Club amenities, especially the golf course, driving range and pool. I have a passion for the game of golf and am active in the Men’s Club and Cigar Club and currently serve on the Finance Committee.

I started out my career working in the golf industry for nine years, a majority of those years as a PGA Apprentice Assistant Professional at Lockeford Springs. I obtained an Associates degree in Golf Complex Operations and Management, and later went on to get my Bachelors degree in Finance, a Masters degree in Accounting & Financial Management, and obtained my CPA license. After completing college, I worked in banking for four years and public accounting for seven years. I am a currently the Controller for The Herrick Corporation, a large structural steel contractor.

I am excited for the opportunity to serve my fellow members and share my professional and personal experiences to improve our Club.

Robert Schroeder — I am a graduate of CSU Fresno, and have been married to my wife, Claire, for 40 years. I recently retired from careers that included Aerospace Engineering/Management and most recently owning a successful Machine Shop.

My membership at the Club started in 2014, while I still held a membership at SGCC (20 plus years), where I served on several Board Committees as well as Board President two consecutive years. After relocating our residence to Lodi, I became an exclusive Woodbridge member, where I serve on the House & Social committee.

If I’m not on a trail enjoying a long-distance trek, (think PCT, JMT), I can be found most mornings in the fitness center. I play in both the men’s golf groups and enjoy a regular Friday afternoon round with my buddies. My wife and I enjoy dining at the Club and participating in special club events. We are supporters of the SPCA, as well as the Pacific Crest Trail Association. When elected to the WGCC Board, I will bring many successful years of business as well as Club Management experiences to help guide WGCC Staff in its future endeavors.

Thank you for your vote.

Joshua Sturman — I was born and raised in Acampo and have spent most of my 38 years enjoying our great Club. My wife, Liz, and our two children, Colton and Cassidy, and I spend more time at the Club than anywhere else. It is for this reason I have volunteered to be considered for a position on the Board. I have always believed if we want to preserve and improve something, we must be willing to work to that end. This Club has been a blessing to my family for decades and it would be my pleasure to help continue its legacy as the family-friendly gem that it is.

After graduating from Azusa Pacific University, I have spent my adult life working in sales — 10 years as a surgical consultant and the last seven selling to concrete producers throughout the Western US. I have also served the last six years on the board for the American Concrete Institute, where we have had to adapt to the ever-changing state legal landscape. I currently serve as the committee chair for the certifications committee, where we employ nearly 50 staff and manage the industry certification courses required to test concrete on jobsites. The last couple of years I have served on our Club’s Membership Committee. The knowledge and experiences I have from this committee will help me hit the ground running as a member of the Board of Directors.

Should you choose to elect me as your representative, I will do my best to always listen and weigh the impacts of every decision based on what I believe to be the desires of the majority of our members. Thank you for this opportunity, I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!
