CELEBRATING SUCCESS & COMMUNITY

The Impact of the Legacy & Ambassador Programs

May is recognized nationally as Mental Health Month, a time when we focus on the well-being of our minds as much as our bodies. Recent studies have shown that loneliness can be a significant health risk factor, comparable to smoking or obesity. The more researchers dive into this important aspect about human health, the more we understand the importance of community and connection in combating these feelings of isolation.

It turns out that fostering a welcoming, family-oriented environment where every member feels connected to others and a part of something bigger is not only good for the Club, but it’s good for our members’ health as well.

Results of the 2024 Legacy Program

Our Legacy Program is a testament to this commitment — thank you for encouraging your relatives to join under the program. This year, we welcomed 10 new members, including 4 Young Professionals, 3 Full Golf, 2 Sports, and 1 Single Golf member. Additionally, the program has facilitated 13 membership upgrades, all transitioning to golf memberships. The new memberships have contributed an impressive $5,235 in monthly dues, totaling $62,820 annually, with upgrades adding another $3,710 monthly or $44,580 annually. These figures not only showcase our growth, but also our commitment to enhancing our members’ experiences and fostering a supportive community. Thank you.

Help Welcome New Members

The Legacy Program may be concluded for 2024, but there’s still work to do. To ensure each new member feels integrated and valued, our Ambassador Program plays a critical role. This initiative helps new members navigate their new social and recreational environment at the Club. Seasoned members volunteer as Ambassadors, offering guidance and friendship, and introducing newcomers to all that Woodbridge has to offer, from our championship golf courses to our vibrant social gatherings. This personal

connection is vital in making every member feel at home, supported, and connected.

Our Ambassadors embody our Club’s spirit of community and service. By volunteering, they help new members adjust and enrich their own club experience, fostering deeper connections and reinforcing our ethos of family and community support. This is crucial not just for the physical health benefits that our recreational facilities provide, but also for the mental and emotional well-being of our community.

The success of the Ambassador Program relies heavily on the participation of our existing members. Simply put, we cannot do it without you. Volunteering as an Ambassador is a rewarding opportunity to enhance your own experience, meet new members, and strengthen the bonds within our Club community. It’s about making a lasting impact and contributing to the welcoming, friendly atmosphere that defines Woodbridge.

We encourage all members, both new and established, to get involved, whether through volunteering as an Ambassador or participating in our many events. Your involvement is crucial to maintaining the vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that makes Woodbridge a truly exceptional place.

To learn more about how you can contribute to these vital programs, please reach out to me in the Membership Office. Join us in building a legacy of excellence and community at Woodbridge, where we do more than just play together—we grow together.

Mental health is a serious issue that affects everyone — even the Club with the passing of a previous general manager. If you would like more information about Mental Health Month, please visit Mental Health America at mhanational.org.

Golf Rules

Last Month’s Question –

In stroke play, a player’s ball lies in a bunker. Before playing the ball, they make two practice swings, each time touching sand in the bunker. A player in their group tells them they have incurred a penalty. The player then breaks an attached branch with their hand, improving the area of their backswing. What is the ruling?

Answer –

The player incurs the general penalty of 2 strokes for touching the sand with practice swings. The player receives an additional 2 stroke penalty for breaking an attached branch thereby improving the area of intended swing.

This Month’s Question –

In stroke play, a player plays a wrong ball from deep rough onto the putting green. When the player reaches the putting green, the mistake is discovered. The player returns to the rough and plays another ball that they believe to be theirs. Then, the player discovers that they have played a second wrong ball. What’s the ruling?

REVAMPING THE GREENS

Club Enhances Summer Play with Strategic Removal of Cool-Season Grasses

As we step into the late spring and summer months, the golf course maintenance department is gearing up for the warmer months ahead. Among the many tasks undertaken, one crucial practice is the targeted removal of cool-season grasses from Bermuda fairways and tees. This meticulous process elevates playing experiences while maintaining the aesthetics that golfers cherish.

Why the Focus on Cool Season Grasses?

Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) has long been a staple on golf courses for its resilience, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in warmer climates. However, in regions where temperatures drop during the winter months, cool-season grasses such as ryegrass and fescue often encroach upon Bermuda fairways and tees. While these grasses provide temporary greenery during cooler seasons, their presence can disrupt the uniformity and playability of Bermuda grass when temperatures rise.

The Process of Spraying Out Cool Season Grasses

The process of spraying out cool-season grasses involves targeted applications of herbicides to selectively remove unwanted grass species while preserving the Bermuda turf. Golf course superintendents carefully assess the timing and type of herbicides to minimize harm to desirable grasses and surrounding vegetation. This precise approach minimizes disruption to play while promoting the health and vigor of Bermuda grass.

Timing is Key

The timing of spraying out cool-season grasses is crucial for optimal results. Golf course superintendents typically schedule herbicide applications during periods of active growth for Bermuda grass, which coincides with the transition from spring to summer. This timing allows Bermuda grass to capitalize on favorable conditions for rapid growth and recovery, outcompeting and replacing cool-season grasses.

Benefits for Fairways and Golfers Alike

• Consistency of Playing Surface: By eliminating competing grass species, golf course managers ensure a consistent playing surface across

fairways, enhancing the overall quality of the golfing experience.

• Improved Turf Health: Removing cool-season grasses allows Bermuda grass to flourish without competition for resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrients. This promotes healthier turf, better resistance to stressors, and faster recovery from wear and tear.

• Enhanced Aesthetics: Bermuda grass presents a lush, verdant appearance that complements the manicured look of golf courses. By eliminating patches of cool-season grasses, superintendents can maintain the visual appeal and uniformity that golfers expect.

• Environmental Sustainability: Targeted herbicide applications minimize the need for extensive mechanical cultivation, reducing soil disturbance and carbon emissions associated with turf management practices. Additionally, promoting the dominance of Bermuda grass can help conserve water resources by optimizing irrigation efficiency.

Looking Ahead

As we strive to provide exceptional playing conditions year-round, the practice of spraying out cool-season grasses in Bermuda fairways and tees emerges as a vital component of turf management strategies. By leveraging innovative techniques and environmentally responsible practices, we reach to uphold the standards of excellence that define the sport. Over the coming weeks you will notice a change in the appearance of the areas sprayed with the cool season poa annua and ryegrass taking on a yellowing look as they begin to die leading way to the Bermudagrass underneath. Recovery times may vary depending on the percentage of warm season Bermuda and cool season grass in any particular area. Those areas under shade of tree canopies for example, will have a higher population density of cool season turf varieties than that of Bermuda.

Until next month… Happy Golfing!

STEERING TOWARD SAFETY:

Mastering Cart Etiquette for a Smooth Season on the Greens

As we gear up for another season of golfing glory, it's time to address a matter that's as crucial as your backswing technique: cart safety. Yes, you heard it right! We're embarking on a journey to ensure that our jaunts around the course are not only smooth but also safe for all involved. Because, let's face it, dodging speeding carts is not the kind of adrenaline rush we signed up for when we joined this esteemed establishment.

Now, picture this: you're cruising down the fairway, the sun kissing your face, the wind tousling your hair, and suddenly... BAM! You're blindsided by a rogue cart careening around the corner like it's auditioning for "Fast and Furious: Country Club Edition." It's not exactly the kind of surprise you were hoping for, is it? Well, fear not, because we're about to drop some wisdom that'll make

Just like the Disneyland Monorail, please remain seated, keeping your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the cabin.

these bumps like a challenge from the golf gods themselves, resist the urge to go full throttle. Remember, your cart is not a monster truck (unless you've secretly installed some off-road modifications – in which case, we need to talk). Take it slow and steady, and your spine will thank you later.

navigating these pristine greens a breeze.

First things first, let's talk blind turns.

We've all been there – innocently rounding a corner only to come face to face with another member who's also convinced they're auditioning for the next action blockbuster. So, here's the deal: when approaching a blind turn, channel your inner race car driver and slow down. I promise you won't lose any style points for taking it easy. Plus, it'll give you a chance to admire the scenery without the added thrill of a potential collision.

Next up, bumpy areas.

Ah, yes, those delightful stretches of terrain that turn your leisurely cruise into a rollercoaster ride. While it might be tempting to treat

Furthermore, it's become apparent that we need to address the issue of speed in general. Many private carts are built with extra power, allowing them to reach higher speeds. However, this also means they require more space to slow down, increasing the likelihood of accidents, especially in crowded areas. Therefore, I urge all members to exercise caution and moderation when operating their carts. Let's prioritize safety over speed, ensuring a pleasant and incident-free experience for everyone on the course.

In conclusion, my fellow country club connoisseurs, let's make a pact to navigate these hallowed grounds with the grace and finesse befitting our esteemed status. Let's slow down around blind turns, take it easy over bumpy terrain, and above all, let's be courteous to our fellow members. Because at the end of the day, golf is not just a game – it's a lifestyle, and one that's best enjoyed with safety and camaraderie in mind.

So, here's to a season of smooth sailing (or should I say, smooth driving?) on the course. May your carts be steady, your swings be strong, and your sense of humor be as sharp as your 9-iron.

the FOMO is real might’ve missed last month

May’s Tip of the Month Trail Arm

Action: Explaining Why Swings Look So Different

Even one who has never seen a golf shot played would look at Adam Scott’s swing and correctly assume that he is an expert player with great ball striking ability. Less people would assume, upon inspecting visibly, that Raymond Floyd was every bit the ball striker or that Matthew Wolff would become one of the best players in the world for a time, almost winning the US Open. There must be some reason swings can look so different but be equally effective. It’s not that these players woke up one day and decided to swing in such a fashion that is less than orthodox in appearance. More than any other anatomical feature, in my opinion the one that contributes most to the “look” of a golf swing is a player’s Trail Arm Action. This is defined as the way your Trail Arm (right arm for a right-handed player) is facing coming into impact and also relates to various other “looks” in the swing.

Let’s first define the spectrum of Trail Arm alignments:

“Under” Alignment:

A player whose trail forearm faces up toward the sky coming into impact would be an example of an “Under” golfer. These golfers tend to have strong grips, wide backswings, and appear to be extending toward the target postimpact while their trail shoulder stays pointing at the ground well after the ball is struck.

Zach Johnson, Dustin Johnson,

and Gary Woodland would be great examples among the best players in the world. Our club has several very good Under players including Jason Reich and Mitch Harrison. It is common for Under golfers to play draws as their trail hand grip tends to move to the strong side but that is not necessarily the case as Gary Woodland has been an effective fader of the ball for over a decade.

On-Top/Cover Alignment:

On the other end of the spectrum would be players whose forearms face down toward the ground to some degree. These are referred to as “On-Top” or “Cover” golfers. While Under players look to be “lifting something up,” an On-Top player appears to be “pushing down on something.” These golfers tend to have weaker grips, narrow backswings, appear to be getting taller earlier in the downswing, and post-impact will have very little extension toward the target. Perhaps a textbook example of an On-Top player is Matt Kuchar. I remember wondering how he could hit the ball as far as he does with such an odd-looking motion, the simple explanation being that he swings in a way that matches his biomechanics. While it is common for On-Top golfers to hit fades because their trail hand grips tend to move in the weaker direction, there are those that still play draw. For example, Rory McIlroy is on the On-Top side of the spectrum, albeit very slightly, and in his younger days played a pronounced draw.

GOLF ACADEMY
Zach Johnson: Notice the trail forearm facing upward and the extension post-impact. Patrick Cantlay: Notice how his shoulders become more level sooner and there is the appearance of him standing up while he is pushing down with less extension post-impact.
14 MAY 2024

“Side-On” Alignment:

In the middle of this spectrum would be “Side-On” golfers. The trail arm of these golfers moves as if they were pushing something sideways toward the target. Side-On players tend to have the swings we like to look at; this is because being the middle of this spectrum provides a lot of symmetry to the golf swing. The width of the backswing, downswing, and through-swings look in balance with each other as opposed to the widenarrow-wide width management of Under golfers or the narrow-wide-narrow width management of On-Top golfers. Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, and Tiger Woods are all very close to being perfectly side-on and, not surprisingly, their swings are all lauded as among the best of all-time.

Tiger is a great example of the dangers of moving away from one’s natural Trail Arm alignment. In 2000, while he was playing the best golf of his career, he was more or less perfectly Side-On. As his time with Hank Haney progressed, he moved more and more under with his arms getting too wide in the backswing and struggled hitting fairways. When he began working with Sean Foley in 2010, his swing moved more and more toward the On-Top width management and his back paid the price. For the record, this is not an indictment of Sean Foley as Tiger, no matter who his coach was at the time, always knew what “look” he was trying to achieve and had final say.

It should be said that there are not only three options. You can fit anywhere in this spectrum and play great golf. So, how do you discover where you fit in this spectrum from perfectly Under to perfectly On-Top? In other words, to what degree are you Under or On-Top? Here are the steps for screening yourself:

1. Get into a golf posture

2. Put your Trail Arm behind your back

Adam Scott: Notice how his swing is in a “middle ground” between Zach Johnson and Patrick Cantlay. The width of his swing matches on both sides of impact, his right shoulder is higher than Zach but lower than Patrick. He is as much in the middle of the spectrum as it gets.

3. Let your Lead Arm swing across your chest as naturally as possible; in other words, don’t think golf!

4. When your lead arm gets to parallel with the ground, clap your hands together

5. Lastly, take away your lead arm and observe in what direction your trail palm is pointing

If your trail palm is perfectly straight up and down, you are most likely a Side-On golfer. If your trail palm is pointed at the ground, then you are a most likely an On-Top golfer. It your trail arm is facing the sky, then you are most likely an Under player.

To reiterate, you should observe to what degree your palm is facing anywhere other than Side-On. For example, my palm faces up to a small degree and would be classified as a “Side-Under” alignment. My twin brother, meanwhile, has a palm that faces slightly down and is classified as a “Side-Cover” player. My swing has more width in the backswing and more extension toward the target.

Interested in your own biomechanics. We can screen this in a lesson any time! Interested in these concepts in general? A Google or Youtube search of the names EA Tischler or Mike Adams will send you down an interesting rabbit hole that hopefully leads you toward owning and loving your own talent rather than pining for that of someone else! See you all at the course!

49er Update

Fun Events Coming in May

The 49ers have had a busy April and look forward to a fun filled May. On April 11 we hosted a WNHGA Open with 28 players from other clubs joining 12 Woodbridge hostesses on the course. Our day included some trivia, closest to the “line” and stroke play on the River. A great time was had by all.

Our Patriot Games with two teams is coming up in May. We’re soon having a Ryder type event against Oakdale, and team play begins soon with Woodbridge pairing with the Twaine Harte team. A day of low putts, an upcoming guest day and the popular “only 4 pars count” will round off our action-packed month.

We welcome two new members – Christy Frank and Rhonda Craig.

All levels of play are welcome to join with a mix of fun games and stroke play. Join us for fun, exercise & of course lunch!

Get Ready for the 49ers Patriot Cup Tournament!

Exciting times are upon us as the much-anticipated 49er Ladies Patriot Cup Tournament is set to take place on May 16th. This spirited competition is not just about the golf—it's about community, fun, and a bit of friendly rivalry between our two fantastic teams: the STARS and the STRIPES.

Team Captains Lead the Charge

Our own members, Jennie and Shannon, will captain the STARS and STRIPES, respectively. The teams will be blind-drawn by the captains at our festive 7:45am kick-off event, complete with mimosas and pastries. This is a chance to mix, mingle, and see which team you will be cheering for!

Flexible Play for All Skill Levels

In a delightful twist, each golfer can select her preferred format of play right up until the kick-off. Whether you're a routine golfer, a precision golfer, or a team putter, there's a spot for you. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Format #1: Routine golfers will shoot from the Merlot Tees for a net score postable round.

Format #2: Precision golfers take on the challenge from the Short Course tees, playing what's essentially a non-postable Par-3 course.

Format #3: Team Putters will find their best spot on the fringe and show off their putting skills.

The True Goal

We want to see every available 49er lady on the course! The essence of the Patriot Cup is participation and enjoyment, reinforcing our club's spirit of inclusivity and friendly competition.

Celebration and Awards

While competition is the theme, unity is the goal. Kristine will be capturing the moments, including a grand team photo to be displayed alongside the trophy in our Cafe trophy case. Thanks to the volunteers, wait staff, Golf Shop, and the Food & Beverage Department for making the event a success. Thanks to Ginny Pelton for a great job running Team Play.

Donna Brundy was able to present Sondra Huff with her Captains book this month, this book is full of pictures, events, good memories all put together by Donna. Great job.

The 18 Hole Ladies will be hosting their first Guest Day at the end of the month, should be a fun day. If you’re interested in playing as a guest with the ladies just get in touch with a member, we can help you get on a team.

April went by so fast it’s time to start preparing for our first Major tournament, the Handicap Tournament, with our new format, only need to play two out of the three rounds to qualify, first two days with a shot gun start (no par 3’s please), tee times for the final round and lunch to follow. We should have a great turnout. Good Luck to everyone.
