Greetings!

PROGRESS & COMMUNITY: Our Journey Together Continues

Reflecting on seven months of growth and connection, our General Manager extends an invitation for dialogue and collaboration, reinforcing our shared path toward excellence and enrichment at our Club

As I sit down to pen these words, I find myself amazed at how swiftly time has flown by since stepping into the role of General Manager here at our beloved Club. Seven months have passed in what feels like the blink of an eye, and yet, each day has been filled with excitement, challenges, and most importantly, progress.

One of the greatest joys of my tenure thus far has been the opportunity to meet and connect with all of you – our valued members and dedicated staff. Your warmth, passion, and commitment to our club have truly made my journey immensely rewarding. From engaging conversations on the golf course to casual chats over a cup of coffee in the clubhouse, every interaction has enriched my understanding of what makes our community so special.

One of the greatest joys of my tenure thus far has been the opportunity to meet and connect with all of you –our valued members and dedicated staff.

For those of you whom I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, I extend a heartfelt invitation to wave me down and say hello whenever our paths cross. Your thoughts, ideas, and feedback are invaluable to me as we work together to steer our club towards greater heights. Whether it's a suggestion for enhancing our facilities, a vision for new events and activities, or simply a friendly hello, I am eager to hear from each and every one of you.

Looking ahead, I am filled with optimism and enthusiasm for the future of our club. We are committed to a path of continuous improvement, striving to elevate every aspect of our operations, department by department, day by day. Together, we will build upon our strengths, address any challenges head-on, and create an environment that fosters camaraderie, excellence, and unparalleled experiences for all.

As we embark on this journey together, I am reminded of a simple truth: greatness is not achieved overnight, but through the collective efforts of a dedicated community. With your unwavering support and active participation, I have no doubt that our club will continue to flourish and thrive in the days, months, and years to come.

Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your unwavering commitment to our shared vision. Here's to the next seven months – and beyond!

HER STORY: March is Women’s History Month

At Woodbridge, we’re proud to support and uplift the amazing women in our community, promoting an environment where everyone can thrive.

March marks an important observance —Women's History Month. This month, we celebrate the contributions, resilience, and achievements of women throughout history, including those in the realms of sports where they've left marks.

"I'm not just a golfer. I'm an athlete, and I'm trying to be the best athlete I can be."
— Annika Sörenstam
"Champions keep playing until they get it right."
— Billie Jean King

ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCE

New Perks & Last Call for 2024 Legacy Program

We can draw inspiration from the words of legendary female athletes who have broken barriers and set new standards.

Annika Sörenstam, a name synonymous with excellence in golf, once said, "I'm not just a golfer. I'm an athlete, and I'm trying to be the best athlete I can be." Her words remind us of the dedication and passion required to excel, not just in sports but in every endeavor we undertake.

Similarly, from the tennis courts, Billie Jean King's powerful message resonates with us all: "Champions keep playing until they get it right." This quote embodies the relentless pursuit of excellence and the resilience required to overcome challenges, both on and off the court.

As we move about our lives this month, let's carry forward the legacy of these incredible athletes. Let's inspire one another to push boundaries, embrace challenges, and celebrate the achievements of women in every field.

The Woodbridge management team is continually striving for excellence in everything we do. We’re excited to share some important updates and reminders to enhance your experience at the Club. Our commitment remains to provide exceptional service and a friendly atmosphere that promotes an active lifestyle, community, family, and friendship.

Streamlining Payment Processes for Enhanced Accuracy

To improve our billing accuracy and streamline payment processes, we're making a small change that will have a big impact. Starting immediately, we will no longer accept credit card payments at the bar for account payments. We encourage members to make payments directly at the office, where our friendly staff is more than happy to assist you. For added convenience, we'll also show you how to use our online billing portal via our website. This move is designed to minimize errors and make your transactions smoother and more secure.

Final Call for the Legacy Program

This announcement comes with a bittersweet note as we say goodbye to our beloved Legacy Program for this year. This month marks the last opportunity for members to upgrade their membership without an upgrade fee. It's also your final chance to refer relatives to join our Club with no initiation fee, provided they commit to a two-year membership. This program has been a testament to the strong sense of community and family values we hold dear. If you've been considering taking advantage of this opportunity, please don't hesitate to reach out to me in the Membership Office for more details.

Introducing the 2024 Proprietary Perks

We're thrilled to announce that Proprietary Perks are now active in our system, bringing even more value to your membership! Members with Full Golf, Single Golf, and Young Professional status will now enjoy four golf guest passes and 12 Sports Complex guest passes. These passes are yours to use until Dec 31, 2024, and we can't wait to see you share the exceptional Woodbridge experience with your guests. It's a wonderful way to extend the warmth and friendship that defines our Club to your family and friends.

We're always looking for ways to enhance your membership experience and these updates are just a part of our ongoing efforts. Your understanding and cooperation with these changes are greatly appreciated, and we're here to assist you every step of the way.

Thank you for your continued support and for making Woodbridge the extraordinary place it is. Here's to more memorable moments together!

Behind the Bar: Discover Our Bartenders’ Top Picks

At the heart of our Club is the Bar at the Founders Cafe, where the drinks and the good times never stop, thanks to our amazing bar staff. They’re not just mixing drinks; they’re mixing the perfect ingredients for a memorable visit. Get to know your Woodbridge bartenders a little better with a peek at their personal favorite drinks.

Annie’s Raspberry Mojito: A Refreshing Twist

Annie brings a refreshing twist to our bar menu with her favorite drink, the Raspberry Mojito. Imagine the classic mojito you love, elevated with a burst of raspberry. This delightful concoction combines silver rum, freshly muddled lime, and mint, with a generous drizzle of raspberry syrup, all topped off with sparkling water for that effervescent finish. It’s a vibrant, refreshing choice, perfect for enjoying on our sunny patio, out on the golf course or while lounging by the pool.

Nicole’s Shamrock: A Glittering Delight

Nicole introduces a drink that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also catches the eye. The Shamrock is her go-to creation, blending lemon vodka with the melon sweetness of Midori, the tropical tang of pineapple juice, and the classic taste of lemonade. But the real showstopper?

A sprinkle of glitter, making every sip a sparkling spectacle. It’s a fun, festive choice that promises to add a little sparkle to your evening.

Kelley’s Spicy Guava Margarita: Bold and Exotic

For those who prefer their drink with a bit of a kick, Kelley has crafted the perfect option: the Spicy Guava Margarita. Updated Golf Play Policy: Enhancements to Weekend Tee Times

Dear Members,

We hope this message finds you well and eagerly anticipating the upcoming golf season. As we prepare for another fantastic year on the golf course, we would like to share an important update regarding a change in our tee time regulations during peak hours.

After careful consideration and taking into account valuable feedback from our members, we have decided to eliminate sixsomes during peak tee times (8am-12pm) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. We understand that this has been an area of concern for many members, and we share your commitment to maintaining an optimal pace of play for everyone’s enjoyment.

We recognize that the course is a shared space, and the feedback from our valued members plays a crucial role in shaping the policies that govern it. We are confident that this compromise will strike a balance between accommodating the preferences of our members and addressing the pace of play challenges we’ve encountered.

Your satisfaction is our priority, and we are committed to fostering an environment where every member can fully enjoy their time on the course. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to make our golfing community even stronger.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a fantastic golf season ahead!

GOLF & GREENS COMMITTEE

Update on Initiatives, Future Plans

Dear Members,

As stewards of our golf course, we constantly strive to improve and maintain conditions, ensuring an optimal playing experience for all our members and guests. In line with this commitment, we are writing to inform you of an essential maintenance activity necessitating the temporary closure of the Vineyard, River, and Lake courses in March. Please note there will continue to be 18 holes of golf open to play during this time.

Course Closure Dates:

• Lake: Mar 11-17

• Vineyard: Mar 18-24

• River: Mar 25-31

This new process allows the grounds crew to spend a week on each course instead of rushing through the process of 27 holes over 3 days. This also allows there to be at least 9 holes with good putting services open at all times. This process will improve the health of the course in the long-term and also increase member satisfaction during the aeration season. Again, there will be 18 holes open during this time as one nine is being worked on.

During this period, our grounds crew will be conducting aeration to the greens, tees, and fairways. It is a critical process and fundamental to the health and vitality of our turf. Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to alleviate soil compaction and facilitate better air, water, and nutrient penetration to the grassroots. This practice is essential for promoting healthy turf growth, enhancing drainage, and ensuring the longevity of our course.

While we understand the temporary closure may inconvenience some of our members, we assure you this proactive

measure is undertaken with the longterm well-being of our course in mind. By allowing our team to conduct aeration uninterrupted, we are investing in the future quality of our playing surfaces, ultimately benefiting everyone who enjoys our facilities.

During these brief closures, we encourage members to check-in with the Golf Shop regarding course access and availability. Also explore alternative recreational opportunities, perhaps by honing skills at our practice facilities or taking advantage of our clubhouse amenities. Additionally, we welcome this time as an opportunity for rest and rejuvenation, allowing us to return to the course with renewed energy and enthusiasm once aeration is complete.

In addition to our upcoming Spring aeration schedule, we will also be tackling the issue of turf uniformity throughout most of the fairways and tees. Over the next couple of months, the golf course agronomy team will be chemically removing coolseason grasses from the warm-season turf stands. This is a common practice in turf management to promote uniformity and optimize the health and appearance of the turf. Cool-season grasses, such as poa annua and perennial ryegrass, thrive in cooler temperatures, while warm-season grasses, like Bermuda grass prefer warmer climates.

The process typically involves the selective application of herbicides that target coolseason grass species while leaving warmseason grasses unaffected. This selective control allows turf managers to gradually transition the turf composition from a mix of cool and warm-season grasses to predominantly warm-season grasses, which are often more resilient to the heat and drought conditions prevalent in warmer

months.

Chemical removal of cool-season grasses helps achieve a more uniform appearance and texture across the turf, enhancing playability and aesthetics. It also reduces competition for resources such as water, nutrients, and sunlight, enabling the warmseason grasses to thrive and outcompete undesirable species.

Timing is critical in this process, as herbicide application should be carried out when the cool-season grasses are actively growing and most susceptible to treatment, while minimizing the impact on the desirable warm-season grasses. Additionally, proper turf management practices, including regular mowing, watering, and fertilization, should be implemented to support the establishment and dominance of the desired warmseason grass species.

Overall, removing cool-season grasses from warm-season grasses in our fairways and tees is a strategic approach to achieving turf uniformity and optimizing the performance and aesthetics of our course.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain the excellence of Woodbridge Golf & Country Club. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the course closure or our maintenance practices, please do not hesitate to reach out to a member of the Golf and Greens Committee or our course superintendent.

Thank you for your continued support of Woodbridge, and we look forward to a great year ahead.

Warm regards,

Woodbridge Golf & Greens Committee

COMMITTEE UPDATE
9 MARCH 2024

GOLF ACADEMY

March’s Tip of the Month GET A GRIP...

In our monthly tips, it has been my goal to strike a balance between technical aspects of the game with swing fundamentals and the numerous other parts of golf that contribute to shooting a score. If you recall from the first article I ever wrote back in October 2022, we discussed the seven “pieces of the golf pie;” those were full swing, short game, course management/ decision-making, emotional management/self-image, equipment, fitness, and your practice habits. In other words, a lot goes into this game!

Hopefully, with those of you I have been lucky enough to coach, I’ve represented whatever we’ve spoken about as parts of a whole and that mastering some new and challenging move in the golf swing is never a guarantee that your scores will come down. That said, for the next few months, I would like to paint the picture of the golf swing as a series of options. There is no one way to play the game or swing a club. What matters is finding out what works best for you. Like a coach I admire says, “However many people there are on planted earth, that’s how many swing patterns exist.” So perhaps it is time you stop pining for Adam Scott’s golf swing and seek to understand your own! Let’s begin with the grip:

in this article are three grip options in terms of how your hands are linked and which one might fit you best!

3 Ways to Hold a Club and Which Option Fits Certain Players: Overlapping, Interlocking, 10 Finger

Overlapping Grip (Vardon Grip):

people in life. This is because an overlapping grip is the option in which your right hand is least on the club.

Interlocking Grip:

If you were to examine every player in the Top 100 of the World Golf Ranking, you would see a wide variety of different looking grips. What we will discuss

Introduced to the game, or at least made popular, by Harry Vardon in the early 20th Century, this grip consists of the pinky from the trail hand (right hand for a right handed player) resting on top of the index finger or in the crease between the index and ring fingers of the lead (left) hand. This is the most common grip in golf and especially here at Woodbridge. This grip fits players with above average sized hands particularly those with longer fingers. Players that have a free hinging and unhinging of the wrists seeking a more stable feel in the hands and wrists tend to be those that have success with an Overlapping Grip. It is also the most “conventional” and the most taught. Players with smaller hands or shorter fingers, however, often have a tough time being successful with this grip especially if they are very right-handed

Used by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, the Interlocking Grip is the other most popular or conventional grip. In terms of a spectrum from least trail hand on the club to most, the Interlocking Grip is right in the middle. It is accomplished by locking your trail pinky with lead index finger. Jack Nicklaus famously had smaller hands with shorter fingers and found this option to work best for him. Players who need a freer hinging of the wrists tend to do so better with interlock than overlap. It also puts the right hand a little bit more in the fingers for most who employ it. Great players who interlock with the grip in the fingers prefer this option because it helps them feel the clubhead and clubface better throughout the swing. In general, the proper grip for you will give the sensation of “gentle control” in which you will feel very secure with the club in your hands but with a lighter grip pressure than a less desirable option.

10 MARCH 2024

10-Finger Grip:

Often looked at as a grip for beginners or junior golfers, 10-Finger is a valid way for players of any skill level to hold the club. Great players in history that have used this grip include Moe Norman and Bob Estes as well as current players Jonathon Vegas and Scott Piercy. This grip is just how it sounds, with all ten fingers on the club and no linking of any kind but with the hands lightly touching each other. With the trail hand the most on the club, this grip encourages the freest swinging of the hands and arms. Golfers that need more of a “smash” feel in their swings or have overly busy bodies because of a lack of freedom in their hands and arms often find the 10-Finger grip brings things together. Like Interlock, 10-Finger can work great for players with smaller hands, shorter fingers, or those simply needing speed. That said, there is nothing about 10 Finger that is less stable or remedial than the other options.

When coaching, there are a variety of reasons why I may suggest whichever of these three options. The ease or difficulty with which a player completes their backswing, how they control (or don’t) the clubface, how they manage the low point of the swing, and how their body motion and hand/arm swing complement one another are all some of the reasons that contribute to your best option. Other aspects of finding the best grip for you are also critical. Should your grip be weak (hands turned toward the target) or strong (hands turned away from target)? More in the fingers or in the palm? Horizontal (fingers perpendicular to the shaft) or diagonal (fingers at an angle to the shaft)? What you will notice is that the right grip for you feels the best, gives you most control through impact, and the most speed! Want to find out what is best for you? We can have that discussion in a lesson any time! See you all out on the course!

GOLF SHOP NEWS Reminder about Golf policies

Club Polices for Golf

A goal of the Club is to remain relevant and fair with established rules and enforcement. Through Monday Emails and Monthly Newsletters, members have periodically received reminders on some of the Club policies for golf. But, as we head into more active months at the Club this year, it is a good idea to review all these policies. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourselves with the list below:

Pace of Play

Four-hour maximum for 18 holes, 2-hours for 9 holes. Keep moving at a good pace. Faster groups should always be invited through, provided there is space ahead.

Golf Course Care

• Course care is every member’s responsibility.

• Please fix all your ball marks and fill in your divots while playing your rounds.

• Rake sand bunkers, and leave rakes on edge of the bunker with head in & handle out.

• These repairs, if enacted quickly, heal much faster than those left unattended.

Golf Cart Access

• Each cart operator must be at least 16 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

• No more than two people per cart.

• Respect all maintenance direction signs and roped-off areas. If none are indicated, keep carts at least 40 feet from all greens, bunkers and tees (20 feet for handicapped golfers).

• Golf carts must always remain on the cart path on all Par 3’s.

• The Golf Course Superintendent may restrict golf carts to paths for all golfers at any time based on course conditions.

Golf Dress Code

Golf attire required for members and guests of all ages while on the golf course or

practice areas:

• Men: Collared or mock turtleneck golf shirts required; golf slacks or mid-thigh shorts.

Last Month’s Question –

In Four Ball Stroke Play, the “Side” (player A & player B) must enter a gross score for each hole on the scorecard. Which of the following is incorrect?

• The gross score of at least one partner must be entered on the scorecard.

• There is no penalty for entering more than one partner’s score on the scorecard.

• Each score on the scorecard must be clearly identified as the score of the individual partner who made it; if this is not done, the side is disqualified.

• It is enough to identify a score as the score of the side in general.

Answer –

It is NOT enough to identify a score as the score of the side in general. Each score on the scorecard must be clearly identified as the score of the individual partner who made it; if this is not done, the side is disqualified.

This Month’s Question –

In individual stroke play, there is never a penalty if two players agree to play out of turn. True or False?

JEMMA DESVOIGNES MEET

Jemma is just about 5 years old and has been hanging out on the courts since she was three days old. Friends and family make it fun to play but the skills are what make it happen. Coach Haley has always pushed her to be her best. Jemma says her favorite part of tennis is learning to volley at the net and playing from the baseline. Grandma Roxie Hartwick set the bar high and following her two brothers and cousins around the court has made it look like tennis comes easy to her. Wimbledon here we come, but first maybe just a few more lessons.

SPRING INTO ACTION:

A Season of Wellness Awaits at Our Sports Complex

Join his Bootcamp every Wednesday at 10:45am for a dynamic workout that will challenge you, or find your balance and grace in his Barre class on Saturdays at the same time. Sergio’s classes are not just about getting fit— they’re about building a community of health and wellness enthusiasts.

New Bootcamp Class

Did you know spin instructor Luis is a veteran? Starting this month, he will be bringing his training to the classroom with a Boot Fitness Class Fridays at 8:30am. It is a bootcamp style group workout that focuses on strength and training and cardio at the same time.

Gym Hours Update

We’re pleased to announce that starting Mar 11, the gym will resume normal operating hours. You can now plan your workouts from 5am to 9pm on weekdays, and 7am to 7pm on weekends. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, our state-of-the-art fitness center is ready to welcome you back at your preferred times.

Introduce your kids to the joy of tennis at our Spring Junior Tennis Camp. From March 26-29, noon to 3pm, Coach Haley will provide a fun and supportive environment for young players to learn the game, develop their skills, and make new friends. It’s a wonderful way for children to stay active, learn valuable life skills, and enjoy some outdoor fun.

A Gentle Reminder on Gym Etiquette

As we all come together to enjoy our facilities, a friendly reminder about gym etiquette. Please ensure you return equipment to its original place after use, clean up after yourself, and avoid interrupting ongoing classes. If you require items from the group exercise room, kindly retrieve them before or after class. These simple acts of consideration go a long way in maintaining a pleasant and efficient environment for all members.

As we march into spring, these updates and events are just the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating season at the Sports Complex. Whether you’re looking to challenge yourself physically, introduce your children to new sports, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of our community, there’s something for everyone this March.

Mother Nature was not kind in February, having to cancel our first week of play, but she could not stop three brave souls, Debbie Wall, Chris Phelps, Rene Donaldson from walking and playing the course. Mother Nature did feel the love and our Valentines Party was a success.

What a great job done by Sondra Huff, Diane Gardemeyer, Anne Huyett. Just another over the top event, the table settings were beautiful with the centerpieces raffle off. Winners:

• Dianne Wheeler, Donna Brundy, Laura Reeves, Marlene Weigum, got their flowers early this year.

• Kim D’Angelo, Erin Devries, Jean Devine took first place and all three were sending their love to Ann Huyett, their blind draw who put them over the top.

• Kathy Holtzapple, Sondra Huff, Diane Gardemeyer, Anne Huyett took 2nd place.

• Donna Brundy, Vicki Gallego, Becky Goehring, Beth Grady took 3rd place.

• Betty Sacher got closest to the pin; hope she used her magic putt and got the birdie.

Some of our members were home dealing with Mother Nature, some of our members enjoyed sunshine and golf on the club’s trip to Cabo, a great time was had by all.

49er Update

Love

the February turn out

Despite rainy weather, the 49er Group was out in great numbers during February.

• On Feb 8 we enjoyed a fun round of golf and a terrific Valentine’s Party hosted by Jennie Fuller and Shannon Hagen . A two man scramble had the team of Juliet Fyffe & Ann Weisenberg and the team of Dora Shoemaker & Donna Aarons as winners.

• Alternate shot play on the 15th was well attended with Shannon Hagen, Jennie Fuller & Donna Aarons with low score.

• Feb 20 was stroke play with Jill Bratton, Kathy Cockayne and Donna Aarons with low net.

WNHGA representatives pictured with Melissa Krebill and Donna Aarons spoke with the group on all they have to offer and presented upcoming events.

We look forward to March events, which include a day with Mulligans, pro throws out our two worst holes and a guest day with low putts. Our St Patrick’s Day Party will be held on Mar 14 hosted by Barb Parejo and Terri Spring. Sign up in the ladies locker room.

We welcome our newest member, Nancy Little, who joined us last month and joyfully played through the fog and squishy turf.

Hope to see you all out there, looking forward to sunny days and increasingly warmer mornings.
