Celebrate with us — Busy Holiday Season

There are many celebratory dining events during the holiday season at your Club. Some of these have longstanding traditions while others are newly minted. The Brunch with Santa and Holiday Dinner Dance are extremely popular. They tend to sellout. In the past, there were no dinner options in December for the membership. This year we have rolled out Dinner with Santa and a December Dinner Night. In the future, we will look for more opportunities to expand the offerings at your Club during the month. Members have the ability to schedule small holiday gatherings for your family and friends on evenings when the Club is not already booked through Jessica Johnstone in the Catering Office. You are encouraged to make all these festive events annual traditions for your family.

Connect with us — App, Text and Website Management is undertaking a campaign to make the membership more connected and informed. Members are urged to access the Club’s website, app and social media for an abundance of helpful information. Members can “opt in” to various group email lists and text messaging. It is important you keep your personal information updated on the Club website. If you are not already signed up for text alerts, it is an excellent way to be quickly informed of activities at the Club. Did you know you can contact your fellow members and create a buddy list on the Club app? Woodbridge has a strong social media presence. It is fun way to engage with your fellow members. The more you are informed about your Club, the more you will enjoy your Club. You will avoid showing up at the Club and having your expectations deflated. We let you know in advance if there is a frost delay. We let you know in advance if there is a special menu. We even let you know in advance if member services have been adjusted due to some unforeseen circumstances. So, get connected, and the Club will be even more meaningful to you.

Governing with us — Annual Meeting & Installation

The annual meeting was well attended last month. Proprietary members overwhelming passed the proposed bylaw revisions. Four new Board members were elected, Two of which are returning

for additional terms. Members present heard reports from the incoming Club President Cody Diede and outgoing Club President Nick Salvetti. Management also reported on year-to-date financial results and a summary of some of the trends impacting your Club (really all clubs). Cost of goods and wage inflation were challenges for the business. Scarcity of workers was another dynamic. Constant efforts were needed to retain and recruit employees.

Supply chain issues also impacted Club operations and improvements. Woodbridge was immersed during the past year in ongoing capital improvements, e.g., golf practice facility, fairway bunkers, solar project, Oasis Bar and Café Patio pergola. Much gratitude toward Club President Nick Salvetti and the entire Board of Directors for their many contributions during 2022! Special thanks to multi-term President Jordan Archuleta and longtime Treasurer Dan Connolly. They are finishing up Club leadership roles and duties well done. All members should take the time to express their appreciation to the Board and Committees. Your fellow members volunteer an enormous amount of energy and expertise. I personally would like to also thank the management team and departments for creating a well-run “home away from home” for the membership with friendly, quality services and amenities.

Enjoy the Season with us — Thank you! There are so many things for which to be thankful. We are planning plenty of parties and events at Woodbridge during the winter months. Come rain or come shine, and we are certainly hoping for plenty of the wet stuff. At the end of the year, your Club attempts to accommodate as many members’ gatherings as possible. Our staff is terribly busy with all the parties and activities. They look forward to a brief breather after Christmas. Many thanks for your generosity toward the employees by way of the annual Christmas fund. From the entire staff to all of Woodbridge’s families and friends, have a wonderful and festive holiday season, and a healthy and happy New Year.

See you around the Club!

Thank you

WOODBRIDGE FAMILY

As the holiday season quickly approaches, I’d like to take this opportunity to give thanks and reflect on the past year.

• To all the staff at our Club, the unsung heroes who do all the work behind the scenes, THANK YOU!

• To the Department Heads, tasked with providing our members with a great experience, THANK YOU!

• To our Board, who have put in countless hours on committees and meetings, THANK YOU!

• To our GM, who is constantly juggling the staff, management, and membership, THANK YOU!

• And finally, to our members, for giving me the opportunity to be the temporary leader of our ship…. without you, there is no Woodbridge Golf & Country Club. THANK YOU!

As I reflect upon the last 12 months, our Club has gone through a lot of changes. From the construction projects, to historically-high membership, and the day-to-day operations of the Club, these changes have provided us with opportunities to fine tune our membership experience. We are a diverse family with multiple interests, requiring the Board to prioritize Club goals. This may lead to questions of “why don’t we do more?" The answer is, as with any family, there will always be negotiation and compromise. In my family, the putting green I want in my backyard will have to wait until I can take down the trampoline my daughter uses. We do our best to listen to everyone; know that your goals and priorities for the Club are heard. And, even though you will see bickering, second guessing, and backseat driving, rest assured, we are still a family. We will continue to push forward in a fiscally-responsible manner, knowing it will never be perfect for anyone, but hopefully really good for all!

Enjoy your holiday season and cheers to 2023!

ON A MISSION What our a Statement says about us

“Woodbridge is a private, family-oriented Country Club committed to providing exceptional service, outstanding recreational facilities and entertaining social events, while maintaining its comfortable and friendly atmosphere.”

Those are the words mounted on the wall in the back hallway, between the office and shoe care. But did you know this is the Club’s official Mission Statement? I’m not sure when this Mission Statement was crafted and approved... it predates my 8+ years of employment at the Club. Nevertheless, it is a mission and goal all of us on the management team keep in mind when planning member events, looking at improvement projects and even planning the dreaded B word... budget.

Looking at the statement closely, it states who we are (a private, family-oriented Country Club), what are ongoing goal or mission is (providing exceptional service, outstanding recreational facilies and entertaining social events) and reinforces our core strength (comfortable and friendly atmosphere).

I find it interesting and insightful that golf, tennis, swim and fitness are not mentioned in this Mission Statement. The creators of this Mission Statement prioritized us as a Country Club striving for:

1. Exceptional service

2. Outstanding recreational facilities

3. Entertaining social events

Without question, all of the three missions above are discussed on a management level weekly, at the committee level monthly and at the Board level at all times. We are always discussing ways we can improve on a hospitality level, within the amenities we offer as well as the fun factor we provide our members. There’s always room for improvement, and I suspect there always will be. It’s how we learn and grow, both as a Club and as individuals.

This month, we have closed the Founders Cafe for dinner, our customary practice each December. I recently broke this down for a member, and realized this practice equates to four hours less of dining opportunity each week, for four weeks. It’s basically the equivalent of closing for one day. Why do we do this each year? So that we can meet mission goals Nos. 1 & 3 above, and run the best December events we possibly can.

Likewise, we also looked at opportunities to offer an additional Founders Cafe dinner service, and we found one — please join us on Wed, Dec 21, 5-8pm for an amazing buffet December Dinner!

We all wish our members a December full of love, happiness, laughter and hugs!

GET COMPETITIVE in your practice!

Here at Woodbridge, we have one of the better practice facilities in the region. The size and slopes of the new putting green provide the opportunity to hit a variety of putts, and the pitching green gives members the rare chance of practicing short wedge shots into an actual green. Still, even with great resources, many players still feel as though they are spinning their wheels when they practice.

That monotonous feeling we all get while practicing is natural when the goal of the session is not specific enough. Great figures of golf history are borderline weirdos when it comes to their practice habits. For example, Phil Mickelson hits 500 3-foot putts, 500 basic chips, and 500 bunker shots per week; is it surprising he was the best short game player of his generation? Gary Player, meanwhile, would stay in a bunker until he made three in a row. Imagine the self-belief and confidence to even dare to think that’s

possible. So, the question then becomes, what is the source of their genius? The undeniable talent or the standard to which they hold themselves when they are developing their skills? Obviously, it’s some mix of both.

Now, we may not be able to reach their heights of achievement or ability, but I think we can give ourselves a better chance by adopting an ounce of their ambition. If we can “win our way off” of the putting green, pitching green, or driving range, not only will we better simulate the environment of a round of golf but, we can learn to actually enjoy our practice. Gone can be the days of practicing golf feeling like the hour in the gym you put in out of guilt rather than genuine motivation. Who knows, you may end up liking the grind!

Here are some example of adding competition to your practice:

Shorties:

• Make 10 in a row in a circle of tees from 3, 4, or 5 feet.

• Advanced modifier: vary the length of putts.

9 Holes Up & Down

• From 9 different locations, play a shot from close to the green and hole out your putt playing every hole as a “par 2.”

9 Holes on the Driving Range:

• “Play” a golf course on the range using poles, trees, or other landmarks to create your golf course.

• Tip: create a course you love! I often play one of the Bandon Dunes courses or Augusta National on the range when I practice.

Dear Woodbridge Members,

At the direction of the Board of Directors, a new Handicap Committee has been established. This committee will follow the guidelines of the USGA Handicap System, thereby remaining a member in good standing with USGA/NCGA.

Through this process, equitable handicaps will be maintained at the Club, providing fair and enjoyable golf competitions. Beginning Jan 1, the Handicap Committee will randomly audit golf rounds played by, and posted for, Woodbridge members including tournament rounds. Each player is responsible for ensuring all eligible scores are posted to the GHIN database as soon as possible after each round. Ways to post a score:

• At the Golf Shop GHIN computer

• On the USGA website

• On the GHIN app – (Golf Shop Staff are available to assist with this if needed)

Should circumstances with a member’s index require, the Handicap Committee may take the following actions:

• Post penalty rounds for missing scores (lowest score over previous 12 months)

• Adjust indexes based on actual performance

• Remove an index from the GHIN system

Within 10 days of any action taken by the Handicap Committee, a member may appeal the decision in writing. If a subsequent resolution is not reached, the member may then contact the Board of Directors in writing.

For questions regarding the Handicap Committee or implementation of these policies, please contact any member of the committee below.

49er Update Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays, Fore-Tee-Niners! Last month, we had a very fun Turkey Shoot. The game was played on the River course with each hole having a different kind of play or scoring and with a little bit of specialties thrown in. The Turkey Shoot hole was the 8th green with "rifles" to aim and shoot into the hole. The winners for that hole were first place Mary Jane Beckham, Cindy Ciboch, and Donna Aaron. They killed the turkey with the least amount of shots and received a dressed, cooked, seasoned and carved turkey...that is... a package of turkey slices. Second place was total score of all the holes, won by Connie Duncan, Jackie Katzakian and Arleen Mataga. They each received a can of Butter Tastin' Grand biscuits. And third place, Marlene Strapp, Cynthia Bannon and Terri Spring won a package of fresh cranberries. We all had a fun, cold day, but a real nice hot turkey sandwich with gravy, garlic green beans and salad. And treated to pumpkin pie by the 49ers.

Please be sure to sign up for the Christmas Party on Dec 8. Even if you have not played with us the whole year, please join us for the party. There is a sign-up sheet in the locker room for lunch only and also for playing. Lunch is scheduled for noon. Prior to that, there will be a special play game, with check in at 8:30am and snack, and shotgun at 9am. If it rains, then we will be meeting around 10:30-11am for games (to pass out the golf prizes if we had golfed) and recognition for the year for Most Improved Player, Most Chip Ins, Birdies, Low Putts, etc.

December Play:

• Dec 3: Vineyard; Tee times, stroke

• Dec 8: River; Christmas Party — 8:30am check in & snack; 9am shotgun, special play; noon set lunch

• Dec 15: Lake; tee times, no game, but post adjusted score

• Dec 22: Vineyard; tee times, no game, but post adjusted score

• Dec 29: River; tee times, no game, but post adjusted score

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday! And the Best of Health to everyone in the New Year!! See you on the course in 2023. Arleen
