THANK YOU

I hope to witness firsthand the exceptional experiences and cherished memories this community will be creating! I am 100 percent committed to upholding the Club's legacy of excellence and ensuring each and every one of you continues to enjoy the finest amenities and services our Club has to offer.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Board of Directors for entrusting me with this significant responsibility. It is a privilege to serve this community, and I am fully dedicated to enhancing the overall experience for our members. I am confident together, we can take our country club to new heights. I am eager to collaborate with our dedicated staff, listen to your valuable feedback, and work tirelessly to create a vibrant and inclusive environment exceeding your expectations. Thank you for your trust, and I look forward to embarking on this exciting journey with all of you.

From the Tokay Invitational Committee & Staff

The 2023 Tokay Committee had its wrap-up meeting and wanted to share a recap with our members. Ninety teams played the three-day event with great weather and excellent course conditions.

The tournament was very successful on all fronts: food, beverage, format, gifts, entertainment, and staff service from all areas of the Club. The final profit/loss statement will be finalized at the next Finance Committee meeting. Early indicators show we managed our expenses within the revenue we brought in. Please give a BIG THANK YOU to all our players and especially our sponsors!

We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that a scoring adjustment error took place and the team of Member Devon Delbrugge and Michael Toon had their scores altered as play finished based on some questions looked at by the committee and the pro staff. Based on the written tournament rules, their team should have been the net winners. Others got involved and it resulted in them not finishing in first place. We would like to publicly apologize for the embarrassment and awkward situation this created. Devon and his partner played well and played within the rules. We will work hard to make sure the tournament rules going forward will be made even more clear to prevent this type of situation in the future.

We are excited to execute an even better Tokay in 2024, our Centennial year.

Welcome Jared!

We are excited to introduce the Club’s new Accounting Manager, Jared Burns.

Jared joined the Club last month, and is originally from Livermore. In 1995, he moved to the Seattle area, where he began his finance career working for large corporations such as Getty Images and Microsoft. In 2012, Jared left Seattle for Palm Desert to work for a 36-hole luxury golf resort with Kemper Sports as a Controller. His tenure with Kemper Sports included stepping into a Regional Controller position with financial oversight over a group of private, semi-private, daily fee and resort facilities.

Jared has a strong knowledge of accounting, coupled with a great understanding of club operations. Jared’s extensive experience in the golf industry, club accounting, financial controls, and reporting along with his advanced skill set in business analytics makes him an asset for the team. He has two beautiful daughters, ages 12 and 16, and enjoys being outdoors as much as possible. In his spare time, he spends time with family, and also enjoys the gym, golfing, fly fishing, kayaking and playing softball.

Please join us in welcoming Jared to the Woodbridge family!

100 YEARS IN THE MAKING

For about a year-and-a-half now, the Centennial Committee has been working on plans for a year-long celebration in 2024, when the Club turns 100. Preliminary plans include five events themed around the centennial, with one special big Birthday Bash in July, the Club’s birth month.

We will kickoff the year-long festivities in January with a cocktail reception. We hope to make this a Roaring Twenties themed party, and feature as much memorbilia we can collect.

This is where you come in. Do you (or your family) have old photos of the Club? Trophies?

Newspaper clippings? We want to display as much as we can in the Clubhouse foyer

display case all year. If you have items you could donate to be displayed, please bring them to the main office at the Club.

In May, we want to bring back a special reappearance of a member-favorite event — the Spring Fling. Members who were here in 2013 and before will remember how fun this event was (it actually predates my employment here, so I’ll take your word for it!).

July is the big Birthday month, and we are planning a familyfriendly party. We hope to make this party fun for kids of all ages and really make it something members will talk about for years to come.

In September, we will rebrand the 2024 Vocker Cup into a

centennial golf tournament. Plans include an impressive dinner that all members — not just tournament players — can attend. We also want to tie in a tennis championship as well, but we need help from tennis experts! If you’re interested in helping with this, please let me know!

December’s grande finale centennial event will be a Christmas dinner dance celebration.

Throughout the year, we hope to bring members special memorbilia for purchase, fund a Club improvement future generations will enjoy and so much more.

If you haven’t had the chance yet, be sure to have dinner at the Club on Friday nights. The history of the Club is printed on the menus, but only for the Friday-night dinners. The Centennial Committee will meet Aug 15 at 4pm. Join us!

LINKS SEASON TAKEAWAYS

August Tip of the Month

As I sit down to write this column, we are in the middle of my favorite time of the year to watch golf, a period also known as “Links Season.” During this series of great tournaments in a row (Scottish Open, Open Championship, Irish Open), we get to wake up and enjoy our morning coffee while watching the world’s best take on challenges only faced in the specific set of conditions provided by Links Golf. Most of you are familiar with this style of course and what it requires but the official definition of Links Golf is as follows:

A golf course built on the sandy strips of land between the sea and the farmable land in almost all cases involving dunes, strategic bunkering, dramatic contours, and a tight, firm playing surface requiring players to consider what happens after the ball lands.

Links golf is not the “point and shoot” golf many American courses require. The playing surface is too firm, the ground too undulated, the weather too unpredictable. This past weekend saw Rory McIlroy win the Scottish Open in dramatic fashion in winds gusting around 40mph at times. Being able to handle windy conditions well is essential to success at Links courses and, most would agree, in the Greater Stockton and Lodi area. Inspired by Rory’s brilliant 2-iron that set up his winning birdie on the 72nd hole of the Scottish Open, I thought it timely to discuss some strategies for playing in the wind.

There are two ways of playing shots in the wind that I’d like to discuss with you, the first of which is what is often referred to as a “Punch Shot.” This style of shot has several basic tenets:

1. Feet slightly wider than normal so as to make the player a little “squattier” at address

2. Ball should be placed toward the back of one’s stance (closer to the right foot for a right-handed player)

3. Shaft leaned more toward the target at address to take away loft

4. The player should finish with the club low, not allowing it to release up toward his or her shoulder

A punch shot is best utilized when playing in extremely windy conditions, playing directly into a stiff breeze, or needing to keep the ball under a low-hanging tree limb. If I was to be 100 percent transparent, however, I only resort to a punch shot when it is absolutely needed for success. In most cases, I employ what I

call a “functionally low” shot. This flighted (lower) trajectory shot is achieved mostly through regulating the “effort level” of the swing. More specifically, I try to become as aware as possible of the amount of tension in my hands and arms. The softer and freer I can keep them throughout the swing, especially in the hitting area, the flight of the shot will inherit an imaginary ceiling and keep the wind from affecting the shot to any great degree. All of this done while adding only a small amount of shaft lean and playing the ball only slightly back in my stance.

To learn how to play the “functionally low” iron shot, I suggest making swings on the driving range in which you swing as easily, lightly, tension-free as you possibly can. You may be surprised how much energy you can put on the ball with very little effort. In most cases, playing the shot on the course will require one more club than you would typically use from that yardage, depending of course on how strong the breeze may be on a given day.

If you’re looking for a player who does this extremely well, look no further than Tiger Woods. In fact, I would posit that Tiger employs some version of this type of shot on the majority of irons he plays. The “soft arm” look to his golf swing is a huge part of him being the best iron player the game has ever seen, allowing him to control shape and trajectory at will.

I hope you all are as inspired by “Links Season” as I have been! Give these techniques a shot in preparation for a Bandon Trip or a windy round! Feel free to reach out with any questions about your game and let’s enjoy a great Summer at Woodbridge!

GOODBYE KURTIS!

I wanted to take this opportunity to announce I will be leaving Woodbridge and have accepted another superintendent position in Sacramento. I want to dispel any rumors as to why I am leaving. It has not been an easy decision.

When you work so hard on a property for four years, you become very vested in it. The relationships developed with staff and members are important and have become an extended family to me. A few weeks ago, I had two offers for me to look at becoming the superintendent at different courses. Both courses were within a 30-minute drive from my house in Folsom -- cutting my commute in half and allowing me to spend more time with my family.

Second, the new course offers a lot of exciting and challenging projects that will make a difference. This position also comes with promotional opportunities and management growth for me, and will give me the opportunity to work with other superintendents in a regional setting.

We were able to accomplish a lot in my four years at Woodbridge. We navigated two natural disasters, employee/manager turnover, a pandemic, drought, and updating an old golf course. I’ve seen the membership grow from the 400’s to more than 800. Woodbridge has come a long way. The work we have done the last four years has laid the foundation for the course to be great in the future.

I would like to thank the staff for being supportive and to the membership for their trust and support.

Onward and upward.

Golf Rules

Last Month’s QuestionMay a player may probe in a bunker without penalty to determine if tree roots, rocks or obstructions might interfere with their stroke?

Answer –

Yes, a player may probe anywhere on the course (including in a bunker) without penalty to determine if tree roots, rocks or obstructions might interfere with their stroke, as long as the player does not improve the conditions affecting the stroke.

For example, when a player’s ball comes to rest near a drain in a bunker, the player may use a tee to probe the sand to determine the extent of the drain and whether it will interfere with their stroke. However, if the purpose of the probing is to test the condition of the sand, the player is penalized.

This Month’s Question –

In Four Ball, If a player stands on or close to an extension of the line of play behind their partner to align for their (the partner’s) next stroke, and while doing so also happened to see how their (the player’s) next stroke might break, is there a penalty?

UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL

Benefits of Personal Training for Golf & Tennis Players

Dealing with a nagging injury? Having trouble perfecting your swing? Maybe, in addition to lessons, you need to take a look at personal training. Physical fitness plays a crucial role in achieving excellence in any sport, and golf and tennis are no exceptions. While technique and practice are essential, maximizing performance and minimizing the risk of injury require a comprehensive approach to training. This is where personal training becomes invaluable for golfers and tennis players. Tailored workouts and expert guidance can take their game to new heights. Here are six ways personal training can improve not only your physical fitness, but your game as well.

1. Better Physical Conditioning

Golf and tennis demand specific physical attributes to excel, and personal training allows athletes to develop and optimize these attributes. Golfers benefit from increased flexibility, core stability, and balance, leading to more controlled and powerful swings. Tennis players, on the other hand, require agility, explosive power, endurance, and quick reflexes. A personal trainer can design a training regimen focusing on these specific requirements, ensuring athletes reach their peak physical condition.

2. Injury Prevention:

Repetitive motions and strain on specific muscle groups are inherent to golf and tennis. Over time, this can lead to overuse injuries. Personal trainers can help identify muscular imbalances, weaknesses, and areas of vulnerability, creating targeted exercises to correct these issues. By strengthening the body and improving overall fitness, personal training minimizes the risk of injuries, allowing golf and tennis players to compete at their highest level consistently.

3. Improved Performance:

Fine-tuning technique and optimizing performance is a continuous process for athletes. Personal trainers with expertise in golf or tennis can analyze an athlete's game, identifying areas that need improvement. They can devise customized workouts that focus on specific aspects, such as swing mechanics, footwork, or shot selection. By honing in on these areas, personal training enhances performance, leading to more accurate shots, increased power, and improved on-court or on-course strategy.

4. Mental Focus and Confidence:

Sports performance is not solely reliant on physical abilities. Mental focus, concentration, and confidence are vital for success in golf and tennis. Personal trainers can integrate mental conditioning exercises into the training regimen, teaching athletes how to remain focused, manage pressure, and maintain composure during highpressure situations. By improving mental strength, personal training can positively impact an athlete's performance, helping them make better decisions and remain composed throughout the game.

5. Customized Programs:

Every athlete is unique, with different strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Personal training provides the advantage of tailored workouts and programs designed to meet specific needs. Whether it's a golfer looking to increase driving distance or a tennis player aiming to improve their lateral movement, a personal trainer can create a customized plan to address those goals.

6. Motivation & Accountability: Training alone can be challenging, with moments of self-doubt and a lack of motivation. Personal trainers serve as constant motivators, pushing athletes to their limits and encouraging them to surpass their own expectations. They provide the necessary accountability to ensure consistent training and adherence to the program.

Wanting to give personal training a try? Contact the Club’s personal trainer, Steven Anthony at santhony@woodbridgegcc.com.

Please don’t forget about the Dress Code

We have been asked by the Board of Directors to embark on a 60-day Rules & Regulations reminder journey, predominately to include dress code, etiquette and behavior guidelines. We will be reminding members of these policies in person, via email and in our regular communications.

In this issue, we are focusing on tshirts. A parent recently shared a story with me last week about how special his children felt when coming to the Club. Membership in the Club was a big part of his children's upbringing. It was a big deal when the family came to the Club. Their son had four or five polo-type shirts and was excited to get to wear one whenever they came to the Club. He explained this is where his kids learned manners.

The biggest dress code violation we see are with respect to tshirts. This dress code applies to your guests AND children as well.

UNACCEPTABLE TSHIRTS: As a reminder, graphic tees are not allowed on the golf course, in the Clubhouse, or in the Founders Cafe (the only Club location graphic tees are allowed is the fitness center and the swimming pool). Graphic tees, like in the top right picture, are tshirts that have large text and/or graphics on the chest. Concert tshirts, beer tshirts, etc fall into this category.

ACCEPTABLE TSHIRTS: While graphic tees are not acceptable, there are some tshirts that are. Tshirts in good condition, with no logo or a small (pocket sized) logo are acceptable — but still not on the golf course (Clubhouse yes; golf no). And example of an acceptable tshirt is shown below right.

We are hopeful that, as members of the Club and parents, you agree that coming to the Club is a special privilege. Let's all aspire to set the right example to other members, guests and children, and to be an excellent club on all fronts.

49er Update Who “Dun it” Mystery!

Hey 49ers! Last month, did we have a FABUOUS Mystery Who Dun It/Guest Day party! Melissa Krebill not only cleverly planned out the clues, but also decorated the course with a body bag, and staged it all so that we could figure out the murderer (from one of us golfers), weapon and location/room. Such Fun! Thanks also to Melissa for the beautiful cheese and fruit platter. And thanks to Kathy Cockayne, Meg McKenzie and niece Caroline from New Jersey for the breakfast and taking our lunch orders. Melissa even planned for Sherlock Holmes' favorite dessert, the Spotted Dick. If you weren't there, you sure did miss out.

This month starts the Championship so that we can send someone to Castlewood on Sep 12. The Championship flight will be played at gross. First, second and third flights are handicapped. Flight 1: index 0 -15.9; Flight 2: index 16.0 -20.9; Flight 3: index 21.0 and above. To qualify for the

Champion Tournament, you must play all three weeks on Aug 3, 10 and 17. If you don't want to be considered in the tournament you can just tell me and the Golf Shop, and just golf, and then you may play from the Merlot tees. If you miss any of the three days, you do not qualify.

Hot Golf!

WOW! July brought some really hot days, curtailing play for some of our members. Thankfully, we are now experiencing some let up in the triple-digit weather.

After the craziness and fun of June and the Invitational, July’s lighter schedule has been a welcome reprieve for some of us.

Our first play day of July was moved from the 4th to Thurs, Jul 6, due to the Red, White & Blue Tournament. Turnout was a little light due to the heat, but the group still managed to record some low putts for the round.

Charity Day was Jul 11 and once again the dynamic duo sisters, Janis Morehead and Jill Thompson hosted a spectacularlysuccessful party. Janis reported that $1,000 was collected. The Ependymoma Research Foundation was selected as the recipient based on our member Vicki Gallego’s association with them in connection with her granddaughter. Thanks to all who contributed to this worthy cause.

As part of the WGANC recognition program each club is allotted a certain number of Medallions (based on the number of members in the club). This year, Beth and I decided to use a program outlined for us. This program uses 3 rounds of play (out

of 7) as a means of recognizing a winner. Tues, Jul 18 was one of the scheduled rounds. We have 3 more scheduled between now and October. Debbie Wall is keeping track of the participants (everyone is automatically included) and will be announcing the winners in November.
