Solar and Pergola Updates If you have been around the Club, you have noticed the solar panels being installed on the roof of the golf course maintenance building. The project is moving ahead nicely, but is significantly behind schedule of what we were hoping. In terms of completion, the Club would like to capture savings on our utility bill sooner than later. The remainder of the project will be more impactful to daily operations because it involves the construction of parking shade structures for more panels. It will ultimately include resurfacing and striping the entire parking lot on the North end of the clubhouse. Parking for a limited period of time will be at the Sports Complex and south parking lot at the front entrance of the clubhouse. The new Pergola on the Café Patio will be installed and completed this month. This enhancement will up our outdoor dining game big time. It will have lights, fans and heaters. It will essentially create a year-round outdoor hospitality space with full views of the golf course, sunsets too. There are future plans to add fire pits for added ambiance and retractable screens for weather and sun protection. What a wonderful improvement for the entire membership to enjoy! We are still waiting for delivery of the much-delayed upgraded artificial turf for the back strip of the driving range tees, and the stadium court, also known as Court #1, will be replaced as soon as the parking lot resurfacing is completed. We will be providing weekly and even daily updates on improvement activities potentially impacting your ability to enjoy your Club. Welcome Catering Please welcome Catering & Member Events Manager, Jessica Johnstone. She will be the point person when making private and member event arrangements. Jessica will be contributing in other ways with overall event planning in the Food & Beverage Department. Some members were already familiar with Jessica from her previous work at Punch Bowl Social in Sacramento and earlier at Sirius Day Spa in Lodi. She also has experience as a Sales Manager at the Four Seasons in Seattle and at Basalt Restaurant in Napa. We are so fortunate to add Jessica to our management team. Our goal for member events is to host at least two special events for the membership each month. Golf teaching Now for some staff departures, which feel all too frequent on both the management and line employee level. Director of Golf Instruction Justin Doyle, is moving to La Quinta this month. There are a ton of great golf facilities in the area. Both Justin and his wife have family in southern California. They will do amazingly in their new home that is a hot bed (literally and figuratively) for golf and country clubs. Justin did a remarkable job growing the game through the youth golf programming and the Operation 36 methodology for both youths and adults. His work was recognized locally and nationally. Justin single handedly created

AUGUST 2022

Fitness changing Sports Complex Director, Jacob Neal, has resigned from his position at the Club. He has accepted a position with the City of Lodi’s Parks & Recreation Department. He will be overseeing the tennis programs for Lodi. You may be familiar with Jacob as the coach of Lodi High School Boys’ Tennis Team and a licensed real estate agent. Jacob’s family has been associated with Woodbridge for decades. We are confident we will continue to see Jacob around the community and Club. Woodbridge is thankful for his contributions in growing the tennis social and competitive programming. We thank Jacob for his work and wish him the best of in all his ventures. The Club is hosting tennis club championships this year after having a lengthy hiatus. It is important to keep expanding the programming and improving the amenities at the Sports Complex. We need to fully capitalize on this recently-added facility. The Club is presently in search mode for a new team member in this important role. By the way, we are undertaking adding some new equipment and classes at the Fitness Center. Please remember the Oasis and pool operations are adjusted after Labor Day. Checking in required Management has constantly communicated the necessity for members and their guests to check in at the Golf Shop or Fitness Center. This should be done before accessing the Golf and Sports amenities. The Board and committees are requesting management do a better job monitoring these areas, both in terms of eligibility and policies, for example dress code. There are members who proceed directly to the driving range in a tshirt or gym shorts. There are members who are not authorized to access the practice facilities because of their membership category. If golfers checked in with the Golf Shop, we could police the policy far easier. Signage and potentially video cameras are planned for this area of the operations. We have improved the cart check out procedure, and can improve the practice facilities check in as well. Another issue is members and non-members accessing the Club facilities after hours and during days of closure. These unacceptable activities have been going on for years. It is terribly hard to police. The Club is comprised of tons of acreage, and is not secured, with public roads and private residences segmenting the property. The Club relies on the membership to police individuals accessing the Club when the Golf Shop or Fitness Center are closed. Pond Fishing One specific activity especially egregious is fishing in the ponds on the Lake Course. The ponds are populated with Grass Carp, and we have a special license to hold this fish species. It is a serious Fish and Game Department violation to catch or harm Grass Carp. This fish species cannot be removed/moved to another body of water. It can result in severe fines. This is not a Club policy, but a State issue. If you know of any individuals, members’ kids or non-members participating in this activity, please let them know that it could result in severe penalties. Nobody wants to see this happen. The Club and our Lake Course neighbors are monitoring this issue and will be reporting violations to Fish and Game. Accentuating the positive In ending my newsletter contribution, let us all focus on the positive things about Woodbridge, because it is the best and most dominant characteristic of your Club. We are in a healthy financial position. This cannot be said of many golf and country clubs in the area. The golf course and property overall are such an incredible asset, separating us from the rest of the golf and country club field. The vibrancy of the continual flow of families inquiring and applying for membership is astounding. Virtually each and every weekend, member families are hosting important life celebrations, like birthdays, anniversaries, wedding and baby showers. The pool this season was such a family-centric daily celebration of recreation and relaxation. You only need to wander into areas of the Club you may have not visited before to witness all the activities. The Men’s Twilight Golf is such a blast of healthy banter and competition. Also on the golf course, it is wonderful to see so many generations of families playing golf. Junior Golf, growing the game activities, were better than ever this summer. All these things and more provide a positive long-term outlook for Woodbridge. See you around the Club every chance you can get!

AUGUST 2022

Thank you for a great 4 years! As many of you already know, my wife and I have decided to move back to Southern California to be closer to family and friends. This was not an easy decision as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here at the Club, but feel it’s the right decision going forward.

4,750 Thank you’s, Justin!

an incredible culture of golf instruction at Woodbridge. The Club is eternally grateful for his efforts and saddened that they will be relocating out of the area. We are in the process of hiring another teaching professional who will focus on juniors and Operation 36. The entire Golf Shop staff will continue to contribute to the robust golf teaching programs at Woodbridge.

What I’m most proud of is when I started here, junior Golf was almost non-existent. We now have many juniors playing every day at the Club. Our Operation 36 program has been a huge success and has connected so many families by giving them quality time together on the Golf course. Many of you who have taken lessons with me know that I say you have to know your stats in order to get better. What’s great about the Operation 36 app is that it tracks how we’re doing as an Academy. Here’s the final tally: Golfers Created: 138 Op. 36 Rounds Played: 2,372 Strokes improved: 2,240 In my absence, the Operation 36 program will take a brief hiatus for the month of August, allowing our staff a chance to get ready and provide a great experience. The program will plan to relaunch in September. Thank you again to all to all the staff and members for a great 4 years at the Club! — Justin Doyle

CURRENT CONDITIONS

How to best navigate Direction

This month, I will hit the 2,000th time I’ve driven to the Club to work.

I know my way to work pretty well. But one day, I noticed my car’s GPS was telling me to take a different exit off of I-5. Had I ignored the GPS and tried to take my usual route, I would’ve realized my exit was closed for repairs that day and for the rest of the week. My GPS was telling me to take a different route based on that day’s road conditions, and had I tried to get to where I wanted to go based on the previous day’s road conditions, I would’ve missed my destination.

Rodney Cordero Sponsor: Membership Committee Category: Sports Christopher Davis Sponsor: D Wright Category: Dining

As of July 31, the Club has officially passed the 800 mark in membership! This breaks down to about 400 members who are playing golf frequently, about 100 who play infrequently, or at the slowest times for the courses, and almost 300 who aren’t here for the golf at all. As of this writing, we are above our 2022 Sales Plan projections by five new members, and we still have five months left in the year.

Morton Rosenberg Sponsor: Membership Committee Category: Sports

This year alone, we’ve welcomed 64 families to our Club family. Of these 64 new members, 53 of them were encouraged to join by YOU, are current members — Thank You!!!

Hailey Davis Sponsor: S Wunsch Category: Young Adult - TENNIS

The membership sales trending above projection, combined with the fact that 83 percent of the new members this year were encouraged to join by YOU, are indicators of Woodbridge’s health and vitality, both as a private club and in its position in the community. We are, in fact, the living and breathing manifestation of our goal — our Mission Statement:

Kevin Terrill Sponsor: M Mason Category: Single Golfer

“Woodbridge is a private, family-oriented Country Club committed to providing exceptional service, outstanding recreational facilities and entertaining social events, while maintaining its comfortable and friendly atmosphere.” Private, family-oriented Country Club? Check. Are the staff, management, committees and Board of Directors committed to providing exceptional service? Check. Do we have outstanding recreational facilities? Check. Do we offer entertaining social events? Check. Have we maintained our comfortable and friendly atmosphere? Check. And we are just getting started. The Club, over the past 98 years, has set its GPS to our Mission Statement, and continues to do so today. The funny thing about GPS devices though... they never care where you’ve been. It only matters where you want to go to the navigation device. Woodbridge has a mighty history that we will be celebrating in the next couple of years. But what the dress code was in 1983; how much a burger cost in 1979; how many women and children were allowed on the golf course in 1942...all irrelevant information to our GPS device. Why is this? Because road conditions from yesterday are not today’s road conditions. Yesterday’s society is not today’s society. Define where you’re going. Plot the best route for today’s conditions. Stay the course. And be willing to make adjustments when you hit a road block. All excellent life skills we can learn from our GPS devices.

HELP PROTECT OUR PRACTICE FACILITY

GOLF COURSE UPDATE

It’s been hot out on the course and it is forecasted to be in the upper 90s-100s for a while longer. Please be careful and drink water we have on the course. If you see staff sitting under a tree it’s because they are trying to cool down from sitting on a hot mower. These temperatures are hard on equipment as well as people. The course is hanging tough in the heat and has faired ok so far (knock on wood). We have had some pumping issues here and there, some irrigation issues and power problems we had to sort out. Typical summer fun for us. The good news is that the days are getting shorter. The new protocols we started on our agronomic plan are paying off, especially in increasing our percentage of Bermuda grass. We will be seeding a few areas with hybrid Bermuda seed. The prices are crazy for that stuff right now ($10/lbs). The one thing not hanging tough is Poa Annua, as evident in the thin areas we have in rough and a few fairways. It just can’t handle these growing conditions. It also takes a lot of water to keep alive. The Bermuda is much better suited to the growing conditions we have at Woodbridge. This is why we have been fertilizing fairways, greens complex’s, tees, roughs every two weeks and injecting fertilizer into our irrigation water. We now have fertilizer injection pumps on each pumpstation. This is a game changer for us and one of the reasons the course is constantly green. Keeping the Bermuda pumped up and growing is critical to getting it to fill into the thin spots. I wish the cost of fertilizers would come down — depending on where sources of nitrogen and phosphorus are coming from the costs are three to four times what they where last year. To help offset some of the cost, we have switched to buying more bulk product and buying base materials and mixing our own blends. We are one employee shy of being at full staff. When we are at this level of staffing, we can get lots of things done. We can make a lot of progress on getting little drainage projects done. We can roll greens with more frequency. Work on improving the irrigation around the course. We are trimming cart path edges again. We are also working on trimming trees. We always have numerous things to do around the course. We have a few minor renovations of some tee boxes taking place. Hole 16 is our focus right now. We enlarged the forward tee so it is now twice the size it was. Previously, it was too small to support two sets of tee markers. Now we have the room to move the tees around and spread usage, giving areas a chance to heal. We will be giving the same treatment to the Chardonnay tee once we open the forward tee. We also have a few other scheduled renovations of other tees on the Vineyard and Lake.

Practice facility

We have received lots of comments about the practice facility lately. Questions about the range tee being on mats occasionally and not on turf. As previously stated above, we need to manage moving the tees around to spread out the damage from the usage. After having large events where the tee gets used a lot the tee needs a break to recover and heal. The mats are a management tool we will use to facilitate recovery when it’s needed. The upgraded mats will hopefully be delivered this month. Like everything else, the manufacturer has had production delays. When they get delivered, we will be able to leave numerous stalls to hit from. The putting and chipping greens have had lots of comments that they are not ready to open. Opening greens is always a tricky thing. We want to have practice areas represent the greens on the golf course. With introducing new greens to Woodbridge, this takes a lot of time. We mow our greens on the course at .100. The newly sodded greens are mowed at .130. We have a ways to go in getting the height of cut down. This is a normal process. If we are too aggressive in lowering the height down, then we risk not developing roots. Growing greens is similar to wine. When you bottle a new bottle of wine, it’s never good out of the gate. It needs time to develop. Greens are very similar when it comes to performance. They need time to develop. When it comes to opening them that’s our decision. When I believe there is no chance of damage that would come from usage and it will serve its role as a practice green, then it will be open. If we believe usage is having a negative impact where it’s causing damage to it, we will close it to recover in a second. We have been receiving lots of armchair quarterbacking/agronomists on this topic.

BY KURTIS WOLFORD GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT 6

We do need members help with treating the facility with respect and policing it. Please don’t use the teeing ground and hit so many divots that no turf is left for the entire hitting stall. If you use the chipping green, repair your ball marks. The chipping green is taking a lot of damage from no one repairing ball marks. If you see your fellow members hitting flop shots into the large putting green. Inform them that’s the putting green not the chipping green. The same attitude on course care we have on the golf course should be expressed at the practice area.

SHE’S OFF TO DAYTON! Big Congrats to Teresa! Great Accomplishment

We’re very proud of our 1st Assistant Golf Professional, Teresa Ishiguro, as she has qualified for the 2022 Sr. Women’s Open. Teresa played the local qualifier at Sierra View CC on Mon, July 18, scoring a 4-under 68. She was first place by 3 strokes over the runner-up! She will travel to Dayton, OH for this prestigious tournament, which will be played Aug 25-28. Please join us in wishing her the best of luck at the event.

Handicap Committee

The Golf Committee has appointed a new Handicap Chairman, who will form a committee for handicap review at the Club. The Handicap Committee will concentrate its efforts on the key features of the Rules of Handicapping that are most relevant. This is not only a function that all clubs are responsible for, but also important for golf events played at the facility. The ultimate goal is ensuring equitable handicaps are being maintained.

Equipment update & towel service at the Fitness Center Big news, cardio fans! We will be removing six spin bikes and replacing them with new cardio equipment soon! This decision was to add more equipment (two more recumbent bikes) and to free up space to have two multipurpose rooms. And even more great news — the center towels have arrived! We will be able to provide towel service for all members. We kindly ask that you return your towels when your workout is over. Starting this month, we have added another fitness class — Water Aerobics will be offered for a third day due to popularity. Carlos Juarez will be teaching the class Monday mornings at 9:30am. We hope to see everyone there!

HOT DAYS OF at theSUMMER Sports Complex Summer at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club was filled with great success and many fun memories. Members have thoroughly enjoyed the hot Central Valley sun, from swimming and diving in at the pool, enjoying fresh cocktails from the new Oasis bar, and playing wake-up drop-in tennis. It has been a blast watching it. Congratulations to all the participants who played in the Woodbledon Mixed Doubles tournament. The tournament was a great success, and everyone who played had fun. The traditional Wimbledon food, featuring Strawberries & Cream and Pimm’s Cup, was a hit. Congratulations to Novak Djokovic, who won the actual Wimbledon, and to Paul Marchand and Maryna Bilonozhko, who won the Woodbledon. Very close scores and enjoyable matches. Thank you to everyone who participated. The next Club Tennis event is the Club Championships. We have Men, Women, and Junior Singles on Aug 13, and Men’s & Woman’s doubles on Aug 14. Please sign up at the front desk. Junior Tennis camps were again a success. Each camp had more than 20 kids sign up, and the kids enjoyed Coach Haley and other coaches’ tips and games. I hope the kids who came out to the camp continue to play tennis yearround and fall in love with the game; seeing so many youth players participating at a young age in a lifetime game was great.

Georgia Merritt for the win! The Woodbridge Sharks completed their final swim meet the last weekend of July. Our swim program was a great success this year, and Woodbridge was lucky to have Lizzy Macfarlane back as the head instructor. The swim team continued to have a significant number of participants. Way to go, Sharks! Our Swimmer of the Year is Miss Georgia Merritt! Another successful water sport was water polo! The kids loved the Club’s return of a water polo team this year. We are excited to see where the polo team goes next year. See more swim meet photos on page 15!

From our Team Play Captain, Ginny Pelton: Ring, ring. I don’t want to get up this early, it’s only 5:39am! A group of ladies have been getting up all summer on various days to represent Woodbridge in the River Valley Team Play. The ladies have been traveling to various beautiful private clubs in the Sacramento/Davis area. They are trying very hard to have great scores on these courses, but finding it difficult to play competitively against some plus one handicap players. However, the ladies are having a great time playing and meeting some wonderful ladies from other clubs. There are only two more team plays left before the end of the season. These final team plays will be tough, but our ladies will be playing hard for a team win. I would like to say thank you for all your hard work and effort in representing Woodbridge in the River Valley League. GO LADIES!! ENJOY and PLAY WELL!

Ginny

I have been remiss in not recognizing our Most Improved Players. Each month our Handicap Chair, Debbie Wall, reviews the stats and posts our member who has most improved her index. The first six months found these players on the board: January: Dianne Wheeler February: Cheri Firpo March: Ginny Pelton April: Donna Brundy May: Sondra Huff June: Pamela Hughes
