FOSTERING A CULTURE OF RESPECT: Member Etiquette at Our Club

By treating each other and our staff with respect, kindness, and gratitude, we not only enrich our own experiences but also contribute to the thriving community that defines our Country Club.

As spring approaches and the vibrant hues of nature begin to bloom around our Club, it’s crucial for us to reflect on the essence of our community: respect and camaraderie. Our Club isn’t just a place to play golf or tennis; it’s a haven where members come together to enjoy shared experiences and forge lasting connections. Central to this experience is the observance of proper member/member social etiquette and the respectful treatment of our dedicated staff.

One of the cornerstones of our community is mutual respect among members. Regardless of one’s tenure or financial contribution, every member deserves to feel valued and appreciated. With this in mind, we should be mindful of our interactions with one another, ensuring that kindness and courtesy guide our conduct. Whether on the golf course, in the Founders Cafe, or at social events, please extend a warm greeting, engage in thoughtful conversation, and demonstrate empathy toward our fellow members.

Let us be mindful of our language, especially in the presence of children. Cursing or using inappropriate language can create an uncomfortable environment for families and young ones. Let’s all strive to maintain a decorous atmosphere, welcoming to members of all ages. Whether engaging in conversation or expressing frustration, please choose words thoughtfully, ensuring speech reflects the values of respect and consideration for others. Together, we can cultivate an environment where everyone feels comfortable and respected.

It’s also imperative we uphold the same standard of respect when interacting with our hardworking staff. These individuals play an integral role in maintaining the excellence of our Club, from meticulously groomed fairways to exceptional culinary experiences. It is important to treat them with the dignity and appreciation they deserve. Simple gestures such as expressing gratitude for their service, addressing them by name, and maintaining a friendly demeanor can go a long way in fostering a positive working environment.

As we embark on another season of camaraderie and recreation, let us reaffirm our dedication to upholding the highest standards of member etiquette. By treating each other and our staff with respect, kindness, and gratitude, we not only enrich our own experiences but also contribute to the thriving community that defines our Country Club.

Here’s to a season filled with camaraderie, mutual respect, and unforgettable memories.

DRESS TO IMPRESS

Our Club’s Dress Code Explained

At Woodbridge Golf & Country Club, we believe in creating an environment that is both respectful and comfortable, serving as a welcoming space for families and a vibrant social hub for our members and guests. Our dress code is a reflection of this balance, aiming to foster civility and comfort across all Club activities and facilities. Here’s a comprehensive look at how you can align your attire with the club’s ethos for various activities and settings.

Golf: Style on the Greens

Golf attire should echo the latest trends in golf fashion, focusing on neatness and good taste. The green is no place for blue jeans, frayed clothing, tank tops, sports jerseys, or any attire that might be considered too casual or revealing. Men are expected to wear collared shirts or acceptable mock turtle necks, while women can opt for collarless blouses and racerback tops. For all, mid-thigh length is the minimum for shorts, ensuring elegance and comfort as you play. Remember, the Golf Shop is always ready to clarify any doubts about acceptable apparel or rain gear for those unpredictable weather days.

Quick Guide for Golf:

Men: Collared shirts or mock turtle necks; tailored trousers or shorts (mid-thigh length minimum).

Women: Collarless blouses or racerback tops; golf skirts, skorts, or shorts (mid-thigh length minimum).

Not Allowed: Jeans, frayed/ripped clothing, tank tops, sports jerseys, mid-section revealing tops, tee shirts, bathing suits, athletic wear, hats worn backwards.

Clubhouse/Café/Bar: The Heart of Our Club

In the heart of our Club, the dress code maintains our standard of casual elegance. While clean blue jeans are welcome in the Café, the overall expectation is for attire that suits a country

club’s environment—no frayed clothes, graphic tees, sports jerseys, sweaty workout clothing or excessively casual wear. This code applies universally, ensuring a consistently pleasant atmosphere for every member and guest, regardless of age.

Quick Guide for Clubhouse:

Permitted: Smart casual attire; clean blue jeans in the Café.

Not Allowed: Frayed/ ripped clothing, sports jerseys, graphic t-shirts, tank/halter tops, bathing suits, short shorts, ski caps, hats worn backwards.

Ballroom/Main Dining Room: Elegance Defined

Our Main Dining Room is a space of refined elegance, reserved for moments that are a cut above the everyday. Thus, blue denim, sweat suits, and casual sports wear are set aside in favor of a more formal approach to dining attire. It’s a place where we celebrate the finer aspects of club life, including the respect shown by removing hats, ensuring that the environment remains distinguished and respectful of everyone present.

Quick Guide for Ballroom/ Main Dining Room:

Permitted: Formal and smart casual attire.

Not Allowed: Any denim, sweat suits, tee shirts, frayed/ ripped clothing, sports jerseys, tank/halter tops, bathing suits, short shorts, hats (except for golf events).

Tennis: Fashion and Function on the Court

Tennis attire at Woodbridge reflects the sport’s dynamic nature, requiring both style and functionality. Regulation tennis shoes are a must for safety and performance, paired with clothing that respects the game’s etiquette and the latest fashions. The key here is attire that is both appropriate for the sport and in keeping with the Club’s standards of neatness and taste.

Quick Guide for Tennis:

Permitted: Proper tennis attire and regulation tennis shoes. Not Allowed: Swimming apparel, non-regulation shoes, shirts not worn.

Pool: Designed for Splash and Relaxation

The pool area is dedicated to relaxation and fun, with swim attire appropriately confined to this space. The aim is for comfort and safety, without the casual wear extending into other areas of the Club. This means no frayed swimwear or casual cutoffs, ensuring the pool remains a pleasant, tidy space for everyone.

Quick Guide for Pool:

Permitted: Swim attire (within pool area only). Not Allowed: Frayed swim trunks, cutoff jeans; swimwear in clubhouse or other sports facilities.

Fitness Center: Where Comfort Meets Discipline

Our fitness center advocates for a blend of comfort and discipline, with appropriate athletic footwear and clothing that supports your workout goals while respecting the Club’s environment. From gym shorts and warmup pants to tights and tees, the focus is on functional, respectful attire that contributes to a focused workout environment. Please also note that what works at the fitness center may not be up to code at the Clubhouse.

Quick Guide for Fitness Center:

Permitted: Proper athletic footwear, gym shorts, warm-up pants, tights, tee shirts (no bare midriffs).

Not Allowed: Bathing suits, cut-offs, sandals, flip flops, golf shoes.

Embracing Our Dress Code

Our dress code is more than just a list of do’s and don’ts; it’s a reflection of our Club’s values of respect, community, and excellence. By adhering to these guidelines, we not only show respect for ourselves and others but also contribute to the distinctive atmosphere that makes Woodbridge Golf & Country Club a special place to be. Let’s continue to dress in a manner that enhances our collective experience and honors the Club’s legacy of elegance and camaraderie.

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?

Why the dress code matters

Enforcing a dress code at Woodbridge

Golf & Country Club isn't just about maintaining a certain aesthetic; it's a cornerstone of cultivating an environment that reflects our shared values and traditions. Here's why having a dress code is a positive aspect of our Club life:

Fosters a Sense of Community: A dress code helps in building a cohesive community spirit. When members dress similarly or follow a set of guidelines, it creates a visual harmony that can make everyone feel part of something special and exclusive.

Upholds Tradition While Embracing Modernity: Our dress code respects the rich traditions of golf and country club culture, integrating them with contemporary fashion trends. This blend ensures that while we honor the past, we are also in step with the present, offering a bridge between generations.

Enhances the Club Experience: Dress codes contribute significantly to the overall experience and atmosphere of the Club. They ensure that members and their guests dress appropriately for various settings within the Club, thereby maintaining the decorum and ambiance that everyone expects and enjoys.

Promotes Respect: Adhering to a dress code is a sign of respect for the Club, its members, and oneself. It shows that members value the Club's standards and are committed to contributing to a respectful and dignified environment.

Encourages Personal Pride: Dressing well can boost one's confidence and pride in Club membership. It reinforces the idea that being a part of the Woodbridge Golf & Country Club is a privilege, encouraging members to take pride in their appearance as a reflection of their membership.

CIGAR CLUB UPDATE April 2-Man Scramble

Dear Cigar Club Members,

As the weather warms and the days lengthen, we’re excited to announce our first event of the year. Mark your calendars for Wed, Apr 24, when the Cigar Club will host a 2-man scramble golf event. And yes, for those curious, scoring will be Net. The entry fee is $24 per team, with $20 allocated to the prize fund and $4 designated for team greenies. We’ll award prizes to 1/3 of the field, ensuring a lively competition.

Following the 9-hole event, we’ll gather for hosted appetizers exclusively for Cigar Club members on the back patio, accompanied by a selection of fine cigars. This will be a fantastic opportunity, especially for our new members, whom I am eager to meet.

Membership in the Cigar Club comes with numerous perks, including complimentary food at all our events. Your membership also covers your entry into the Lewis and Clark Expedition in December and grants you the chance to compete in the annual 14 Club Challenge — a must-try event that promises loads of fun.

We also organize three annual trips: Monterey in February, Reno in September, and Las Vegas in October. Membership gives you the exclusive opportunity to sign up for these memorable trips. I look forward to welcoming all our Cigar Club members next month and am especially looking forward to meeting our new additions. Please remember, enjoying cigars is not a prerequisite for club membership.

Our group was established 7-8 years ago by six founding members with a simple mission: to unite those who support Woodbridge and wish to have fun. The idea was sparked one Wednesday night on the back patio, amidst laughter and cigar smoke, giving birth to both the club’s name and its founding spirit.

We look forward to seeing you on Apr 24 for an event filled with camaraderie, competition, and of course, cigars.

April’s Tip of the Month

the Dynamics of Rear, Center, and Front Anchors

Piggy-backing on last month’s article in which we presented how to grip a golf club in terms of options, let’s discuss a different facet of the swing that also can be done in different ways but with equal success. You may have noticed watching professional golfers on television or even some of your playing partners pivot differently. Some have a noticeable drift away from the target, others stay very centered, while some even appear to move toward the target while they rotate. For the sake of creating a language for discussion, the world’s top coaches will often refer to the options as rear, center, or front anchor. For the remainder of the article, I will do the same!

The very proposal of the options probably has you wondering which one fits you best. The good news is that you can find this out very simply. By either watching yourself in the mirror or having someone film you, get into a slight athletic squat with your arms extended directly away from your sides, almost like a propeller. Then, without performing a golf pivot, turn 90 degrees in the rear direction (to the right for a right-handed player). Repeat the motion several times until you feel as though you are making as natural a turn as possible. Now, observe whether the center line of your body moved rearward (away from target), stayed centered, or moved frontward (toward the target). Think of this screening as a spectrum from very rearward to very forward. Players can be anywhere within that spectrum and play great golf; what is most important for peak performance as well as injury prevention is the player pivoting in a manner that matches them. Now, here are some examples of each option throughout the history of the game:

Rear Anchor:

These are the players with a noticeable lateral shift in their golf swing. My hero growing up, Nick Watney, was such a player as was Tiger Woods in his younger years. Many of you may recall the early days of swing analysis on TV in which they would highlight Tiger’s head drifting away from the target on the way back. In a historical sense, the game was taught this way for many years. Golf instructors of the 70s-90s taught players, in their minds, proper weight shift that went rearward on the way back and then toward the lead foot in the downswing. These players often feel that a strong lateral shift toward the target in their downswing is their main source of power. Over the last few decades, many coaches have shifted their preferences to a more centered or even front of center pivot, but players like

Gary Woodland, Lydia Ko, or Anthony Kim have demonstrated that rear anchor is still a valid option.

Center Anchor:

Players that look as though they are purely rotating with no lateral shift either direction are your Center Anchor golfers. Dustin Johnson is perhaps the poster child for a very centered, extremely rotary swinging action. As mentioned before this has become a preference many coaches in the world of golf today. Tiger Woods, as he has gotten older, has employed a more centered pivot. What’s interesting about Tiger in particular is that he has used all the anchor options throughout his career: rearward in his youth, more centered in the late Butch Harmon and Hank Haney years, front during his time with Sean Foley, now settling on a centered pivot. Center anchor golfers greatest source of power is rotation or torque and will often describe their swings as aggressive turns.

GOLF ACADEMY
10 APRIL 2024

Front Anchor:

Many of you have probably heard of the swing methodology “Stack and Tilt” founded by Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett. Their system focuses golfers pivoting forward of center, their main justification being that would be the simplest way for golfers to hit the ball before the ground. There are many front anchor players throughout history, including Ben Hogan and Fred Couples. Modern players include Bryson Dechambeau and Matt Kuchar. I myself am a front anchor golfer, but my swing differs from the Stack and Tilt paradigm in that I rotate much more level than their preferences when I’m playing my best golf. Front anchor golfers’ strongest source for power will be using the ground in a vertical fashion.

Hopefully, in presenting this spectrum from rear to front, you are beginning to see that there is no one way to swing a club or play this game. I envision a future in which coaching golf is done with as little “preference” as possible, one where players don’t pine after the look of another player’s swing but simply seek to understand their own! Luckily, there are coaches like EA Tischler leading the charge to help you own your swing!

Golf Rules

Last Month’s Question –

In individual stroke play, there is never a penalty if two players agree to play out of turn. True or False?

Answer –

False. There is no penalty if a player plays out of turn, except that if two or more players agree to play out of turn to give one of them an advantage and one of them then plays out of turn, each player who made the agreement gets the general penalty (two penalty strokes).

This Month’s Question –

In stroke play, a player’s ball lies in a bunker. Before playing the ball, they make two practice swings, each time touching sand in the bunker. A player in their group tells them they have incurred a penalty. The player then breaks an attached branch with their hand, improving the area of their backswing. What is the ruling?

Coming Soon! Thursday Ladies Night League!

Attention ladies! Get ready for the Thursday Ladies Night League starting this month! Ladies Night springs from a profound ambition to welcome more women — many of whom cannot play in the mornings due to work and time commitments — to the fairways, merging competitive spirit with social engagement to redefine the traditional golfing narrative.

Spearheaded by Member Melissa White, Ladies Night will launch Apr 18 and will continue weekly through the summer. Ladies Night is a warm

invitation to all women of the Club, regardless of membership status. It represents a unique opportunity for those balancing professional and personal commitments to indulge in a tranquil retreat and engaging fun on the golf course.

Distinctly departing from conventional league formats, the Ladies Night innovates by foregoing fixed teams. Instead, it introduces an element of spontaneity and excitement, randomly assembling foursomes prior to tee-off. We hope this approach fosters new

friendships and deepens existing community ties.

Ladies Night participants will also enjoy the postgame atmosphere, featuring appetizers conducive to sharing tales of triumphs and trials on the green. This relaxed conclusion underscores the league’s focus on unwinding and socializing, further enhancing the distinctive Woodbridge experience.

Ladies Night is all about encouraging more women to play golf. Stay tuned for more details as we finalize the details for Ladies Night.

49er Update From St. Patrick’s Day Fun to Guest Days: A Recap of Recent 49ers Golf Events

The 49ers have been making the most of the nearly spring weather, engaging in a variety of games on the golf course.

On Mar 7, we introduced a playful format that included two mulligans, a single putt, and a drive, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who participated.

Our St. Patrick’s Day celebration was a hit, featuring unique twists like partners playing each other’s balls and some alternating shots. The event culminated in a delightful lunch and awarded prizes to the top two teams. Congratulations to Kathy Cockayne, Meg McKenzie, Shannon Hagen, and Juliet Fyffe for winning the day!

Mar 21 marked our first guest day of the year, focusing on the game of low putts. The day was rounded off with a lunch followed by a WNHGA (Women’s Nine Hole Golf Association) training event.

We’re eagerly anticipating our April schedule, which will include stroke play, a ‘3 clubs and a putter’ challenge, another guest day, and a WNHGA Open Day on the 11th.

We warmly invite women of all skill levels who are seeking fun, exercise, and camaraderie to join us.
