The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) is a not-for-profit organization and was founded in 1972 by member organizations in 18 countries. WONCA now has 132 Member Organizations in 111 countries and territories with membership of about 500,000 family doctors and more than 90 per cent of the world’s population. This includes 11 organizations in collaborative relations with WONCA. There are 34 members in the Academic membership category, which consists of Academic Departments of Family Medicine. Over 1560 individual general practitioners and family physicians have chose to join WONCA in their own right.
HISTORY O U R
WONCA represents and acts as an advocate for its constituent members at an international level where it interacts with world bodies such as the World Health Organization, with whom it has official relations as a non-governmental organization and is engaged in a number of collaborative projects. The WONCA World Secretariat was transferred from Bangkok, Thailand to Brussels, Belgium in November 2020.

PRESIDENT W O N C A
LEADING THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
For the first time in WONCA’s history, a new Executive Committee was constituted virtually, rather than through a face-to-face meeting. To build a well-functioning team, I met with all directors of the board on one-to-one calls during January to explore the directors’ views on the plans and perspectives I outlined in my inauguration speech, in November 2021, and to map resources and views among the executive members.
We held eight online executive meetings in 2022, of which two were scheduled over two days. The highlight was the face-toface meeting in Oslo in the first days of July.
Online meetings offer limited options for informal exchanges among board directors and offer no options for socializing. To compensate for this and to address the roles of board directors and related governance issues, each executive meeting included a workshop session. Topics related to governance such as the role of a board of directors and focused on planning processes.

STRATEGIC PLAN
In March, the strategic planning process was launched. For a description of the process and how far we progressed by the end of 2022, refer to the report by President-Elect, Dr Karen Flegg. I am looking forward to presenting a WONCA Strategic Plan to Council in Sydney, in October this year.
I feel fortunate and deeply grateful for having a successor who values-long term planning and who is able and willing to contribute to and actively take part in and lead parts of the process. That vouches for a good future for our organization. Continuity is a hallmark of clinical family medicine and an organization’s good governance.
COUNCIL MEETING 2022
As a result of the transition of the secretariat from Thailand to Belgium and incorporation in Switzerland, we have a new requirement to hold annual general meetings, which for WONCA means annual Council meetings. This will enable us to update the Council members more regularly on the budget and ongoing operational procedures. The 2022 annual WONCA Council was organized in London at the end of June. This was the first Council meeting in a hybrid format in WONCA’S history.
THE WONCA SECRETARIAT
Over the last three years, many countries, including Belgium, have been subject to restrictions due to the pandemic. Despite the restrictions, it has been a priority for me to visit the secretariat in person as it added great value to my collaboration with the CEO and his staff. I have attended four online executive meetings from Brussels. Despite limited human and financial resources, the secretariat has modernized WONCA operations under the leadership of the CEO, Dr Harris Lygidakis. We now have a wellfunctioning, multilingual secretariat. I am grateful for and impressed by the CEO’s ability to develop the secretariat under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, considering the many-faceted consequences of the pandemic. I am expressing a big thank you to Harris and his team for the efforts they have made.

WONCA REGIONAL MEETINGS
The WONCA Europe Conference 2022 was the first face-to-face WONCA conference since the onset of the pandemic and took place in London. The conference was a joint venture between the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and WONCA, as both organizations were celebrating their 70th and 50th anniversaries respectively. I delivered the opening keynote speech jointly with the RCGP President, Dr Martin Marshall. I also offered greetings the WONCA Europe Council at their meeting. The Council approved the Core Values Document, the outcome of a regional brainstorming process that I had been leading since I stepped down as WONCA Europe Regional President in 2019
At the end of 2022, several regions organized conferences, which led me having an extensive traveling schedule. The following were some of the conferences:
WONCA Iberoamericana CIMF Heath Summit: Guatemala: November 8–12 WONCA Africa Conference, Nigeria: November 22–24.
WONCA Asia Pacific Conference, Indonesia: December 8–9.
I delivered keynote speeches at all of these conferences. To develop and maintain our global network, WONCA members must hear from their leaders, and regional conferences and councils provide excellent opportunities for dialogue.
The WONCA North American region is different from the other regions as it has no governance structure as a region. The CEO and I went to Washington, D.C., in September to attend the Council of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). We also took part in the conference on international health organized at the same venue, partly on the same dates. We also met with both the president and CEO of AAFP.

It is worthwhile for the president to utilize his extra time when attending our regional conferences as it offers opportunities to visit health facilities, meet with local health authorities, and not least meet with representatives of different chapters.
I would like to thank all of you who have received me with kindness and hospitality in your local community, be it on the national or regional level.
WHO
Over the last 12–14 years, WONCA has developed an increasingly strong relationship with WHO. Over the years, both organizations have developed, and WONCA’s WHO strategy has evolved accordingly.
Our current strategy can be summarized as follows:
Strengthen the regional links between WHO and WONCA.
Focus on impact on the technical level; we have chosen non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as a focus area.
Strengthen the advocacy for primary health care (PHC) in general practice and family medicine in particular. It is important to contribute to universal health coverage (UHC). WONCA is currently exploring how it can team up with other professional organizations to make achievements in that direction.
The Portuguese Association of Family Medicine (APMGF) was successful in its bid to host the WONCA World Conference in 2025. I was invited to attend their annual national conference in Aveiro, Portugal, to meet with the local organizers and to show support for the ongoing preparatory work, including raising awareness of the importance of our global network’s work. I delivered a keynote speech, and I attended meetings with different groups of Portuguese members.
When I stood for election as PresidentElect, I was nominated by the Norwegian College of General Practice (NFA) and also by other Nordic colleges that form the Nordic Federation of General Practice. At the annual meeting of the Norwegian College in May and at the Nordic Federation’s annual meeting in Copenhagen in March, I gave updates on global WONCA matters.

REPRESENTING WONCA
The list of talks that I have delivered at arenas outside WONCA is long. The same goes for meetings with other stakeholders, aimed at identifying synergies and potential collaborative projects. My impression is that WONCA is welcome in many arenas. Given the limited financial and human resources, strict prioritization is needed.
I strongly believe that family doctors can achieve more and better when working in teams, whether it be in the clinical setting, community setting, or in our organizational work. WONCA is constantly striving to advocate on behalf of family medicine and primary care to be more efficient and have more impact. Engagement with international stakeholders is key.
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)
The OECD is launching the PARIS Survey at present. For more information, see https://www.oecd.org/health/paris/
WONCA has long been invited to attend the OECD Advisory Board meetings to give inputs to the strategy, content, and implementation strategy. Thus, I attended an in-person meeting in Paris in May.
North American Primary Care Research (NAPCRG)
The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) is another partner of WONCA, with partly overlapping constituencies/members. I was invited to give a keynote speech at the NAPCRG annual conference, held in Arizona, USA, in November. It provided a great networking opportunity, besides the opportunity to offer inputs to the NAPCRG Forum.
World Psychiatric Association (WPA)
In August, I was invited to attend the annual meeting of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) in Bangkok, Thailand. I contributed to two sessions in the scientific program, one in collaboration with the International Federation of Mental Health.

PUBLICATIONS
Getting our messages across to relevant target groups, both internally and externally, also means publishing views and perspectives. I have contributed to such activities together with different WONCA members and working groups.
In February, I was invited to represent the professional voice in the online launch of The Lancet Commission on Depression. The session is available online: https://event.on24.com/wcc/r/3570306/508 431E37714BA0389EC3F34BBE50DC4
GENERAL REFLECTIONS AND THANKS
This has been an interesting year for WONCA. We are gradually developing our global network into a professional organization.
WONCA is in transition. Change takes time, and teamwork is needed.
The hurdles are many, and sometimes very high, in a transition process like the one we have almost finalized during 2021 and 2022. WONCA’s achievements are completely dependent on a well-run secretariat. Thus, I extend a big thanks to the secretariat, led by CEO Dr Harris Lygidakis.
I would also like to thank my colleagues on the Executive Committee who are contributing to solving the huge challenges we are currently facing.
I also want to thank WONCA people in different current and former roles, including some of my predecessors. I am deeply grateful for your availability and invaluable support.

PRESIDENT - ELECT W O N C A
My role in the past year has focused on supporting the current president Dr Anna Stavdal. I have watched her with admiration driving a new agenda for WONCA, looking at what we share, where we are going and how we are going to get there.
WONCA GROUPS EXCHANGE IDEAS
It has been a joy and an honour to initiate regular meetings of the chairs of our WONCA Working Parties and Special Interest Groups over the past 15 months. These meetings have proven that despite time differences, we are all enthused about sharing ideas and learning from each other, and such meetings must happen more often than for a short time at every world conference. This year in particular, many of our chairs are in their first term of office and it is been wonderful
to see the more experienced chairs sharing their knowledge and ideas.
Enthusiasm has been high, and we are exploring further options to increase the capacity to exchange and communicate. A new initiative which has worked particularly well!
ASSOC. PROF KAREN FLEGG
WONCA STRATEGIC PLANNING
Since commencing office, our president, Dr Anna Stavdal, has driven an organization-wide strategic planning process. The process of strategic planning assists an organization to enhance its understanding of where it is going, how it is going to get there and how it will know if it has been in achieving its aims.
WONCA last planning process began in 2008, when a Group to Redesign the Operations of WONCA (GROW) was established. That group presented the “GROW” report to Executive in 2009, and in turn, to the Cancun Council meeting, in 2010. WONCA has not undertaken a strategic planning process since.
15
WONCA | 2022
The process so far in 2022, has provided a wonderful opportunity to engage with many colleagues who are active in WONCA. The initial phase involved the development of a ‘SWOT’ analysis looking at our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. This process involved nine focus groups and 51 individuals, a diverse range of colleagues including chairs of our Working Parties and Special Interest Groups, WONCA Past Presidents, current and former Executive Committee members and of course Members of the Young Doctors’ Movement.
The enthusiasm generated by these focus groups was high. It was reassuring to find that there was strong agreement across groups and also many were already thinking of the actions that might eventually be implemented through our Strategic Plan. Our thanks to the group facilitators Bruce Chater, Rob Dijkstra, Raquel Gomez-Bravo, Donald Li, Harris Lygidakis, Dimity Pond, Ruth Wilson, Kim Yu.
WONCA Executive has held strategic workshops as part of its meetings, thanks to the initiative of our President. Several of workshop sessions have enabled further development of core goals, and particularly priority actions.
An interesting step was a workshop considering to these questions:
What action can we take to minimise weaknesses using the opportunities identified?
How can we minimise the weaknesses to avoid the threats identified?
Which of our strengths can be used to maximise the opportunities?
How can we use our strengths to minimise the threats identified?
At the time of writing, a draft plan including goals, objectives and some key actions is being prepared for Executive consideration and for Council 2023.
It is a considerable achievement that, despite few face-to-face meetings, our President will present Council in 2023 with the first WONCA Strategic Plan in over a decade.
This will have been a process involving multiple internal stakeholders which benefited from the input of WONCA colleagues across with different interest areas in WONCA and involving past, present and future presidents, regional presidents and other office bearers.
As your next WONCA President, I will be excited to carry forward the long term strategies developed in this process, securing continuity from one Executive to the next - the only way forward if we wish to build on past achievements.
#WONCA SYDNEY2023
Since commencing office, our president, Dr Anna Stavdal, has driven an organization-wide strategic planning process. The process of strategic planning assists an organization to enhance its understanding of where it is going, how it is going to get there and how it will know if it has been in achieving its aims.
I have chaired the International Advisory Committee, and also participated in the Host Organising Committee for the WONCA 2023 world conference (RACGP - WONCA 2023) being held in Sydney from October 26-29, 2023.
Recovery, re-connection and revival - a celebration of primary careis our theme
Regular meetings of both committees have been held (as well as our Scientific Committee) and we have been overwhelmed with ideas. We have very much valued the input of our international experts to both academic and social programs and we hope to continue such input in 2023 Committee members can be seen on this page. ASSOC. PROF KAREN FLEGG
WONCA President - Elect
STRATEGIC
PLANNING
WONCA has established a strategic planning process, led by its President, Anna Stavdal, and President-Elect, Karen Flegg, which will assist the Organisation to define its vision and goals for the next five years, the actions and resources needed to attain these goals, and how it will measure progress.
The last strategic planning process was developed by the Group to Redesign the Operations of WONCA (GROW). The GROW report, which was presented in 2009, consisted of a plan to restructure WONCA and increase its operational capacity and financial means.
While some of its recommendations have come to fruition, some, in retrospect would seem to have been unachievable.
PROPOSED STAGES OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN
1. Formulation – The first stage of plan formulation involved understanding the organisation's current performance, using SWOT analyses (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats).
2. Define the Organisation’s mission, vision, purpose and objectives.
3. Strategic Intent - Third, determine where we realistically want WONCA to be in the medium to long term.
4. Strategy developed with broad strategic goals/intents and several objectives under each which can move us forward to where we want to go. Objectives where possible should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely (SMART).
Finally, some key measures of performance must be set to monitor progress with implementation. Review – A strategic plan should be reviewed at least annually.
OUTCOME
The outcome of this process will be a five year plan with:
mission statement and objectives (in our case some ideas for future enhancements);
an outline of strategic goals each with some objectives and proposed activities;
an assessment of our resources to proceed with activities.
PHASE ONE
The first phase of the Strategic Planning process took place in 2022. It consisted of conducting focus groups with SWOT analyses. The participants had the opportunity to exchange points of view and ideas to understand the trends and the future of WONCA.
WONCA's main stakeholders were assigned to nine focus groups, which included Past Presidents, Young Doctors' Movements Leads, Members at Large, Regional Presidents, as well as Chairs from Working Parties and Special Interest Groups, and some of WONCA’s Member Organizations.
Each focus group was assigned a facilitator, chosen for their knowledge and experience within WONCA. The results of each group were synthesized into a final report which is presented in the following page.

We are excited to share WONCA’s annual report and showcase the organisation’s activities and accomplishments from 2022, including building capacity, education, advocacy, and research. Throughout this report, you will learn about our continuous engagement with the WHO and the development of WONCA’s strategic plan. The report also highlights Working Parties, Special Interest Groups, and Regions and Young Doctors' Movements. In the final pages, you will find reports from the 2022 World Family Doctor Day and the accreditation program.
CEO
Below are a few of the ways that WONCA continues to support and engage with members, creating value under its mission:
Supporting communities by introducing groups to the Membership Portal. These workspaces are an instrumental engagement resource for the Working Parties and Special Interest Groups and include blogs, fora, newsfeeds, and shareddocument libraries.
DR HARRIS LYGIDAKIS
19 WONCA | 2022
The Working Parties on Research and Mental Health and the Special Interest Group on Policy Advocacy have already a dedicated space. The Working Parties on Education, Rural Practice, Patient & Safety, Women and Family Medicine, and the Special Interest Group on Emergencies are expected to launch a space within the first six months of 2023.
Strengthening WONCA’s output with active exploration of opportunities to develop projects, identify calls for grants, and participate in consortia as partners. For example, the MDD Minds project of the Working Party on Mental Health is coordinated by WONCA. We have also begun developing a fundraising strategy, parts of which will launch in 2023.
Enriching communications and strengthening WONCA’s brand position in the broader primary healthcare ecosystem through campaigns, reports, communication materials, and a growing social media presence. The monthly newsletters and weekly e-updates are now produced on a new platform where we also seek feedback from our readers.
Supporting a return to in-person conferences. As we emerge from the height of the pandemic, the WONCA community was ready to meet, share and rejoice across the world, including in Limerick (WONCA Rural), London (WONCA Europe), Muscat (WONCA East Mediterranean), Abuja (WONCA Africa), Bali (WONCA Asia Pacific), and Guatemala (WONCA Iberoamericana VIII Summit of Family and Community Medicine).
Preparations for the next World Conference in Sydney are underway with our partners at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. The committee members are continuing their efforts to ensure a successful meeting. We also look forward to welcoming you to Brussels (WONCA Europe) and Santo Domingo (WONCA Iberoamericana) this June.
A foundation for the future: Authorities across the globe—and our members and constituencies—require transparency in the transactions and due diligence. The legal and financial regulations are changing, and international non-profits like WONCA must operate within an increasingly strict landscape. WONCA is adapting to this reality with continued organizational restructuring that ensures a solid foundation and future growth. WONCA recently completed its registration in Switzerland and is now recognised as a non-profit by Swiss authorities. This immediately positively impacted our operations (e.g., enabling essential services, such as banking and electronic card transactions).
We enter 2023 with renewed energy and a deep sense of purpose. Our collective strength and passion make WONCA unique, and together, we can continue making a positive difference and inspire others to do the same.
DR HARRIS LYGIDAKIS WONCA CEO

W H O
Liaison with the WHO remains a top priority. Progress has been made this year. Increasingly, support from member organisations, regions, working parties and SiGs is becoming essential.
OUR AIM
To share expertise and information to work collaboratively and strategically with WHO to:
(i) Contribute effectively to show how primary care can address health inequities and achieve UHC.
(ii) Build sustainable collaborations so that impetus is maintained when leadership changes.
(iii) Harness expertise of Working Parties and SiGs to provide technical support for WHO projects.
PROF VAL WASS Member-at-Large, WHO Liaison
WONCA | 2022 21
THE CHALLENGES ARE TO:
i: Ensure that the family medicine doctors’ leadership in primary care teams is visible to the WHO.
ii: Find within the complexities of WHO organisation where focal points for effective engagement lie.
iii: Maintain impetus when WONCA and WHO leaders change to build sustainable collaborations.
iv: Identify where across WONCA membership collaboration with WHO already exists.
v: Harness the technical expertise within WONCA to support WHO initiatives.
vi: Work within budget restrictions. Geneva is an expensive venue.
This report outlines how during the year we have addressed these challenges:
VISITS TO WHO HEADQUARTERS IN GENEVA:
1: In May 2022 President Anna Stavdal and CEO Harris Lygidakis attended the seventy-fifth World Health Assembly in Geneva, the first in-person Health Assembly since 2019. WONCA collaborated with other organisations in multiple constituency statements and important relationships were established through meetings.
2: In October 2022: President Anna Stavdal, CEO Harris Lygidakis and WHO liaison officer Val Wass organised a two day visit to WHO in Geneva to further build relationships through a series of meetings. The WONCA Executive approved prioritising three main outcomes to:
i: Bring WONCA technical expertise to the WHO work on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
ii: Collaborate to form a “Global Forum for Primary Health Care (PHC)”- working initially with the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) and the International Council of Nurses.
iii: Continue to build WHO relations identifying links and work in action at WONCA Regional level.

THE ROLE OF WONCA WORKING PARTIES AND SIGS: HARNESSING OUR
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
This year has seen a change in our approach as we begin to harness the technical expertise of our working parties to WONCA initiatives:
The Working Party on Mental Health was represented by Professor Chris Dowrick at the World Health Organisation's conference on pre-service education for mental health in Geneva in December. A valuable contribution was made to the WHO aim of advancing preservice training in mental health for nonspecialist health care providers.
The Working Party on Women and Family Medicine is represented by Professor Amanda Howe on the Partnership in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health’s (PMNCH’s) collaboration with the Healthcare Professional Association (HCPA) to address global workforce shortages.
THE WAYS FORWARD: WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?
We need to focus and prioritise areas where our technical expertise in family medicine can enhance WHO workstreams. This will be built into the WONCA three year strategy to ensure work can be sustained through changes in roles within WONCA. Harnessing existing expertise and projects within member organisations, regions and our working parties and SiGs is of paramount importance. This will the main focus this year as we look forward to the 2023 World Health Assembly in May.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
Communication - we strengthened communication with and within all Member organizations in the African region. This enabled us to reach all our individual members with WONCA Info by setting up several online groups.
Conference - we successfully hosted the 7th WONCA Abuja conference in Abuja from 24–26 Nov 2023, had 2-day Advocacy from 22–23 Nov 2023, Preconference for Afriwon, our YDM, WONCA working party and supported annual conference / meetings of MOs. We encouraged webinars at the MOs' levels.
Membership Development - we have engaged organizations in five Francophone countries of Benin Republic, Togo, Mali, DRC, and Burkina Faso; the sixth is in Gambia (Anglophone). No one has joined WONCA but work is in progress. Technical consultations with WHO and WORLD BANK are on.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
We are in strong communication and collaboration with WONCA, working party of women in Family Medicine (WWPWPM), AFRIWON, our Young Doctors movement in Africa, WONCA working party on mental health and WONCA working party on Education and AFROPHC.
Members were encouraged to join working parties and many did. We supported these working parties and SIGs during WONCA Abuja 2022 by providing both direct and indirect support.
The WONCA President, Dr Anna Stavdal and CEO Dr Harris attended the conference and activities of the working parties and SIGs. We provided the venue for the WONCA women working party and women in family medicine. We also ensured that the various groups presented workshops and symposiums to sensitise and stimulate the interest of more members to join their various organizations. We attended the AfroPHC conference in Cape Town, South Africa in 2022.
COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO
We have a relationship with WHO AFRICA REGION. Three executive committee members: Dr Dan Abubakar, Dr Joy Mugambi and Prof Shabir Moosa were invited to attend the WHO REGIONAL COMMITTEE FOR AFRICA which was held in Line Togo Republic from 21–26 August 2022 as Non-State Actors NSA.
However, only Regional President Dr Dan Abubakar attended the physical meeting. We have been invited to attend similar meetings since 2019. Despite the interactions at the regional level and MOs’ engagements at country levels, there have not been tangible and significant benefits to WONCA Africa Region and MOs at country levels.

More work is being done to get better dividends from WHO Africa Region. We are working on stakeholders’ engagement with WHO at their headquarters in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, before August 2023 to strengthen our collaboration. We have an MOU in collaborative relationship with WHO since 2019.
PLANS FOR 2023
WFDD - To sensitise MOs to organize World family Doctor Day in all African countries with MOs including the ones yet to join WONCA.
Membership Development - To continue with the sensitisation and constructive engagements with the five Francophone countries and one Anglophone country currently being mentored for membership of WONCA. To work more closely with WONCA CEO and Communication Officer to achieve this objective.
WHO - To arrange a stakeholders’ meeting with WHO AFRO to strengthen our collaboration.
WORLD BANK - To arrange a stakeholders’ meeting with the World Bank through the Senior Communication Advisor on Healthcare Financing in Africa.
WWP & SIG - To continue the sensitisation of individual members to join groups of their choice. CommunicationTo deepen current communication efforts.
WONCA Sydney 2023 - We set up platforms to sensitise members to attend the conference with encouraging results. We are doing same for WONCA Brussels 2023.
AfroPHC - We have an MOU in collaborative relationship to continue it.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
The monthly executive board meeting was held virtually. WONCA EMR Committees, i.e., Nominating and Awards Committee, Finance Committee, Scientific Committee, and Bylaws and Regulations Committee, were formed. A dedicated session was organized in all member organizations, and local conferences were held to promote visibility for WONCA by shedding light on its vision, mission, membership, network, and role to support family physicians in the region.
These sessions and local conferences were held in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Morocco, and Syria with nearly 4,000 attendees overall. The collaborative manuscript entitled “The paradigm shift from NAFLD to MAFLD: A global primary care viewpoint” was published in Liver International (LIV). Celebrations of World Family Doctor Day 2022 were conducted, where the WHO EMRO Regional Director issued a statement directed toward WONCA EMR to highlight the importance of implementing family practice in the countries of the region.
The member organizations organized diverse activities in the region on the whole, e.g., the creation of an educational brochure (Iraq), a free health camp at Qambar Intersection (Afghanistan), radio speeches (Jordan and Saudi Arabia), a campaign (Oman), health education sessions and memorable gift (Palestine), and several conferences (Egypt and Algeria).
The 7th edition of the WONCA East Mediterranean Region Family Medicine Congress 2022 was held from November 10–12, 2022, in Muscat, Oman. The congress was organized by WONCA EMR, under the theme “where opportunity meets action.”

The congress’s vision was to facilitate an enabling environment to encourage and support the development of academic organizations and general practitioners/family physicians. Over three days, the conference witnessed the participation of attendees from 22 countries for multiple key note sessions, parallel workshops, and presentations of abstracts.
The conference witnessed 15 scientific sessions along with 13 workshops facilitated by 50 faculty members. Al Razi YDM had its own Preconference Schedule Workshops that comprised four workshops. Supporting IFMSA took place at the conference.
The regional meeting on “Primary health care for universal health coverage and health security in the Eastern Mediterranean Region” was attended on December 11–15 at the Four Seasons hotel at the First Residence (Cairo, Egypt).
It was facilitated by the WHO’s Regional Office and involved the signing, on December 15, 2022, by health leaders from across the 14 member states. a call for action for the national recognition of the regional Professional Diploma in Family Medicine.
Further, other member organizations in the region were approached to join WONCA, e.g., the Syrian Family Medicine Society and Libya as well as academic departments. Al-Razi YDM was supported in their activities.
COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO
1. Collaboration for the WHO Regional Diploma:
The WHO EMRO Regional Director has formed a Steering Committee (SC) for promoting the practice of family medicine in the EMR. The Committee comprises members from the WHO EMRO as well as partner organizations, including The Arab Board of Health Specializations (ABHS), the World Organization for Family Doctors (WONCA), and academic institutions.
The 24-month Regional Professional Diploma in Family Medicine (RPD-FM) was launched with two objectives: 1) meeting the training duration of most accrediting bodies; 2) opening up career and training pathways for graduates through the option of completing the Arab Board training after graduation.
The launch of the Regional Professional Diploma in Family Medicine took place on February 28, 2022. Subsequently, the screening of the candidates and removal of incomplete and duplicate submissions resulted in a total of 900 applications. Thereafter, official communication with the health ministries in different countries to track the candidates’ credentials took place.
2. Collaboration for “Mapping the Scene” of family physicians in the region.
3. Member of the regional health alliance accelerators forged by WHO EMRO.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
The year 2022 had been highlighted by the “return to normal” in the post–COVID19 pandemic. The other major event in Europe was the Russian invasion and the war between Russia and Ukraine. We took several actions to support our colleagues in Ukraine, helping them with private donations, educational materials, and support and updates in our webinars, newsletters, and website.
During the year, the WE EB had monthly virtual meetings, and we had three faceto-face meetings. Many national conferences and many activities were carried out in the networks and SIGs. And the pick was the first face-to-face WE conference after three years in London in the summer of 2022 with more than 2,000 participants.
WONCA Europe increased its activity in joint applications through big EU grants and projects We were involved in more than 10 proposals, and 3 of them were successful.
PROTECT-Europe – Aims to contribute to the implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, which aims to support Member States’ efforts to extend the roll-out of routine HPV vaccination of girls and boys to eliminate cervical cancer and other cancers caused by HPV in the coming decade.
Smart CARE – Aims to develop a “Cancer Survivor Smart Card” to summarize patients’ clinical history and to facilitate and monitor follow-up care including the patients’ own experience
PRAISE U – Aims to explore the situation regarding early prostate cancer detection in Europe.

I attended many national conferences as a keynote lecturer or offered greetings at the opening ceremonies, the vast majority, virtually. The following are some of them:
The 11th International Trakya Family Medicine Congress, March 2022, Turkey
ELEGIA (Greece)– Opening of the annual conference, May 2022
The annual conference of the Association of General Practitioners/Family Medicine of South East Europe in North Macedonia –June 2022
The annual conference of the Romanian National Society of Family Medicine – October 2022
To increase the diversity of our income resources, we applied for several educational grants from Pharma companies.
We continued with our monthly newsletter and increased our activity on social media. We started with a new initiative of producing every month a summary and update of the EB meeting and activities to increase the engagement of our members.
The face-to-face council meeting in London after three years was very successful. It allowed us to change the bylaws to introduce virtual council meetings and also enabled the introduction of a new member to WE EB representing EURIPA.
Montegut Global Scholars Program
The WONCA Europe 5-Star Award
The WONCA Europe Scholarship
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
We introduced a special edition of the EJGP dealing with COVID-19 and family medicine, and we had a lot of submissions that will feature in around 15 accepted publications.
We had a lot of self-generated webinars on various clinical topics, as well as the endorsement of educational activities by leading CME programs like Medscape.
We increased our cooperation with other scientific organizations in Europe like EASO (European Association for the Study of Obesity), EFP (European Federation of Periodontology), and Lancet Liver Primary.

NORTH AMERICA REGION
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
The focus this year in WONCA North America has been on refining and preparing a new set of bylaws to provide WONCA with a more formal executive structure to enhance and strengthen the regional structure for WONCA in North America.
Many of the North American region’s strong independent organizations returned to in-person meetings this year, including the AAFP’s FMX, CFPC’s Family Medicine Forum, STFM’s Annual Spring Conference, and NACRG held it’s 50th annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The CCFP also held it’s annual Distinguished Lecture in an online format and hosted several activities to celebrate World Family Doctors day inclusive of newspaper articles, social outreach activities and and a webinar with theme “Walk together to combat chronic diseases in the COVID 19 era”
WONCA and global health in general have retained an active profile across the North American organizations. Jeff Markuns, the regional president for North America, spoke at CCFP’s Annual Distinguished Lecture In addition, Dr Markuns gave the Daniel Ostergaard Lectureship on Global Health at the AAFP’s FMX meeting, where the Global Health Summit was integrated into FMX for the first time, and World WONCA President Dr Anna Stavdal and WONCA CEO Dr Harris Lygidakis both also attended AAFP’s FMX as well
In addition, the Besrour Center for Global Family Medicine held its annual meeting at CFPC’s FMF, and Dr Stavdal was also the keynote speaker for the opening plenary at NAPCRG’s 50th annual meeting, where the organization has made a deliberate effort to now expand and engage beyond North America.
The AAFP has a Global Health 365 Series through the upcoming year that can be found at aafp.org, and other global health educational opportunities can be found a the Besrour Center at cfpc.ca. STFM offers its annual spring conference with several global health offerings at stfm.org and NAPCRG is continuing to look to expand its international presence, and you can find more at napcrg.org. Last but certainly not least, we are grateful that the ABFM also continues to sponsor global health connections through the Montegut scholarship for attendees to WONCA events.

-Developed written statement on primary care for the whole region
WRITTEN STATEMENT
UHC can be achieved through the involvement of GPs or primary care physicians.
A huge field force of GPs/family physicians can easily be trained, and their existing services can be modified according to the WHO model of FPA (Family Practice Approach).
Family medicine departments should be established in all medical colleges to create a “Faculty in Primary Care,” resulting in the proper training of family physicians to provide an effective “Referral System.”
Trained family physicians through the development of a family medicine department is the need of the day, and it can also play a crucial role in health insurance.
UHC can be achieved through the following initiatives:
1. Creating family medicine departments in all medical colleges through faculty development program.
2. Strengthening primary care through trained family physicians.
3. Developing trained family physicians through CMEs and credit hours Certificates by PMC.
4. Developing a proper referral system for all points to channelize through suitable specialties, making the process cost-effective.
5. Including all parameters of prevention of polio, measles, rubella, TB , mother and child care and NCDs
PLANS FOR 2023
- WONCA Research Workshop (a twoday workshop is planned at Colombo in May 2023, which got delayed due to COVID and the financial crisis in the region)
- Annual International Conference at Lahore on March 18–19, 2023, at Royal Palm, Lahore, with different sessions as in the past.
- Weekly CMEs and research webinars throughout the year.
- WONCA conferences at Brussels and Sydney.

ABOUT THE WP ON EDUCATION
The WONCA Working Party on Education supports high quality education, training, assessment and continuing professional development in general practice/family medicine for medical students, doctors in training, and established general practitioners and family doctors. All are welcome.
The WONCA Working Party on Education (WWPE) had a busy year in 2022. Throughout the year, we strengthened our governance structure. We ensured that we had a representative from all WONCA regions and reached out to the young doctors for representation. We have now staggered terms for our executive members, such that not all of them will complete their terms at the same time, ensuring institutional memory and continuity. We have monthly meetings that are consistently attended by most of the executive members. Many of them have been helpful in leading specific portfolios and are also working on the undergraduate medical education textbook due to be launched next year at the WONCA World conference in Sydney.

WONCA | 2022
As the COVID pandemic evolved, allowing in person events, the WWPE has been active at giving presentations. In the summer of 2022, WWPE member leaders (Victor Ng, Marie Andrades, Val Wass) attended the WONCA Europe conference in London. We held a WWPE meeting which was well attended. We explored issues faced by educators in Europe and beyond and provided insight on how WONCA and the working party can assist. The WWPE also had representation at the Primafammed conference in Malawi, where we were offered a keynote and a workshop. Professor Akye Essuman, our African regional executive member presented this on our behalf, and I was able to participate by making a video submission. At the WONCA Africa conference, Dr Bola Fatusin, our young doctors’ representative represented the WWPE and presented on some of the work and activities of the working party. Her presentation generated significant interest at the conference with many members signing up to the WWPE shortly after. Finally, at the recent WONCA Asia Pacific conference, I presented a plenary discussing the importance of building health systems through family medicine education. We also held a working party meeting in conjunction with the Indonesian Society of Family Medicine Teachers.
The Working Party has been involved with several consultancies. We recently participated in the accreditation visit with UMP GOLD program in Guangzhou/Hong Kong. A report has been submitted to the accreditation committee. We have also been asked to review continuing professional development material for accreditation. The chair of the WWPE participates in the WONCA accreditation committee, and as a group, we are keen to improve the accreditation process and provide a quality improvement service to our partners.
Further, we are engaged with the WONCA secretariat to start working on the portal. Our WWPE executive members, Drs Nagwa Nashat and Brunee Dorset have been very involved with setting up the portal and helping to work with the secretariat to set up a marketing and scaling plan.
Hopefully by next year, most of our members will be on the portal and using it to offer a more streamlined way for us to communicate, share information sand collaborate.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
We have collaborated with groups such as the Working Party on Quality and Safety and have a joint workshop prepared for WONCA World in Sydney. We also both sit on the accreditation committee together. Additionally, we are working with the special interest group on emergency medicine to prepare workshops for upcoming conferences.

COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO
Please describe any work that has been done by your WP/SIG in collaboration with the WHO. If no work has been done with the WHO, then please type N/A. Please provide the contacts that you are working with at the WHO.
We have been in contact with the WHO regarding preparation of educational material related to mental health. I had an interview this year related to mental health education for family doctors. I advised the important role that family doctors play in providing mental health care to their communities and in particular, communities that do not have access to psychiatrists or psychologist. Additionally, the family doctor’s ability to provide continuing care and understand the family and personal dynamics make them ideal providers of care for mental health and concurrent conditions. We have since been invited to a workshop hosted by the WHO and Chris Dowrick from the working party on mental health will be attending. I look forward to further collaboration with the WHO in this area and other work that is underway at their academy.
PLANS FOR 2023
We have 3 main priorities for 2023.
1. Complete the WONCA undergraduate medical education text book for Sydney.
2. Revise the postgraduate education standards and submit to WONCA Executive for approval.
3. Review and participate in providing input on how the WONCA accreditation and quality improvement services can improve and evolve.

ABOUT THE WP ON ETHICAL ISSUES
Both of these events presented the work we are currently reactivating to develop a core curriculum and syllabus for ethics teaching to medical students. This will be a project stretching out over many years and we will reach out to other WP/SIG and WONCA members to join us in this effort.
As part of this debate, three executive members (Ross Upshur, Andrew Papanikitas, and Tania Moerenhout) have published an editorial in BJGP: https://bjgp.org/content/72/720/310.
Activities of the WP largely came to a stop during the COVID pandemic, and with a new chair, we have worked hard to reactivate the group. We have updated our membership and are actively looking for new members to join. We are also in the process of extending the executive board to 14 members in total, 2 for each WONCA World Region.
In 2022, we attracted 4 new Board members, and we still have 3 positions to fill. We are now holding monthly meetings (10 a year) with the board and have developed Terms of Reference which are in a final draft (to be discussed with WONCA exec team).
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
We have been communicating with the SIG Older People and Health about a possible collaboration on a webinar next year. We are also planning to reach out to the WP on Education, to collaborate with us on the development of a core curriculum for ethics teaching.
PLANS FOR 2023
We plan to hold two conference workshops in 2023 - one at WONCA Europe and one at WONCA World. Both will focus on the ethics of technology use in general practice (AI and electronic health records). We will further consolidate the executive board and Terms of Reference and continue with monthly meetings with the exec team. We hope to welcome new members to the group from all over the world as well.
We plan to organize one to two webinars in 2023, one possibly in collaboration with the SIG Older People and Health, and potentially, a separate one with the WP on Ethical Issues. We are also looking into organizing a round table with experts to develop a syllabus with topics to be included in ethics teaching for medical and GP students.
Lastly, we want to continue with our work of developing a core curriculum for ethics teaching, which will require collaboration with other groups, as we also take stock of current teaching efforts.

ABOUT THE WP ON RESEARCH
The WONCA Working Party on Research seeks to expand research in general practice/family medicine and welcomes interested family doctors to join.
Our vision: Research is a core component of general practice/family medicine/primary health care training, scholarship, and clinical practice in all nations.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
INTERNATIONAL EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY CARE COVID-19 PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE: A COMPARISON OF FOUR COUNTRIES
After the WWPR workshop, which took place during the virtual world conference 2021, we decided to report the results as a journal article. This initiative was led by Felicity Goodyear-Smith, and published in Family Medicine Community health journal. The citation of this article is: Goodyear-Smith F, Kidd M, Oseni TIA, Nashat N, Mash R, Akman M, Phillips RL, van Weel C. International examples of primary care COVID-19 preparedness and response: a comparison of four countries. Fam Med Community Health. 2022 Apr;10(2): e001608. doi: 10.1136/fmch2022-001608. PMID: 35418499; PMCID: PMC9013790.
Workshops: The following workshop have been realized in WONCA Europe 2022, London:
"Primary health care as the cornerstone of the global response and recovery from current and future public health crisis" –featuring Candan Kendir, Mehmet Akman, Michael Kidd, Amanda Howe, Felicity Goodyear-Smith.
Webinars: After our member Sairat Noknoy’s proposal, on behalf of Thai Royal College of Family Physicians, we (Felicity, Sairat and myself) started to explore possibility of a webinar series on different aspects of primary care on a country-comparative basis. We agreed on the following activities:
1. A webinar organized every two months, with 10-minute presentations from four different countries on a snapshot of the nature of family medicine and primary health care in their country, using the template for PowerPoint presentation slides.
2. The webinar series is planned to take place over 1 the year 2022 to 2023.
3. Each webinar will present a case, and the presenter will describe how much involvement family medicine/primary care have in managing such a case. The three sub-themes are core functions of primary care (comprehensiveness, coordination, continuity, access)
Expected outcomes from the webinars:
1. Collaboration between academic centers, GP/FP associations from different countries and WONCA to strengthen knowledge and research capacity in family medicine and primary health care.
2. Improvement in knowledge about family medicine and primary health care systems.
3. Publications in peer-reviewed journals from the webinar series.
The first Webinar took place on 12th Dec 2022. It was a success, with 65 participants from all over the world. In this webinar, presentations from Thailand, South Africa, Myanmar and Japan took place. Chris Van Weel kindly accepted to be the commentator of this session. The second webinar is planned for the 13th of February, 2023. Already, presenters from Turkey and Argentina have been confirmed.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
We have submitted a joint WS with EGPRN to Europe 2023 conference in Brussels. Also, the chair of WP on Quality and Safety is also member of our WP, so we are exploring ways to collaborate.
The Chair of working party, Prof Mehmet Akman has been working as consultant for WHO Azerbaijan for the last 2 years.
COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO PLANS FOR 2023
We will continue the webinar series and also submit abstract for WONCA world and regional conferences.
We are planning to have papers based on webinar series and workshops.
We are also planning to revise our principle documents including mission and vision.
We want to use the membership portal as a communication and discussion platform and make use of it efficiently.
We would like to increase the number of our members and especially plan activities for the young or early career researchers for capacity building in scientific research.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
This year marks 30 years of Rural WONCA. The WWPRP was formed at the 1992 WONCA World Conference in Vancouver with the encouragement and support of the then WONCA Secretary/Treasurer (later CEO) Wes Fabb, following an ad hoc meeting during that conference.
The Working Party broke new ground for WONCA by meeting regularly via audio teleconference between 1992 and 1995 during which time, the WWPRP developed the WONCA Policy on Training for Rural Practice that was formally approved by the WONCA Council at its meeting in Hong Kong in 1995.
The 19th World Rural Health Conference was hosted in rural Ireland at the University of Limerick with the theme "Improving Health, Empowering Communities" - with over 650 participants coming from 40 countries and an additional 1,600 engaging online.
The conference has considered the role of national health systems and all stakeholders, in keeping with the commitments made through the Sustainable Development Goals and the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health as one of the fundamental rights of every human being The conference was addressed by experts in rural health from all regions of the world. The conference was addressed by experts in rural health from all regions of the world.
The conference declaration is in response to the “Blueprint for Rural Health”the declaration from the 17th World Rural Health Conference in Bangladesh set out a comprehensive plan for rural health in Ireland.

ABOUT THE WP ON ADOLESCENT & YOUNG ADULT CARE
Today’s world has the largest generation of 10–24 years old in human history. Our understanding of brain development highlights adolescence as the secondmost crucial leverage point for preventative but mainly promotional behavioral interventions: imagine the impact of learning evidence-based practices on how to work with them!
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
This past year, we participated in different conversations with the WONCA leadership and were hoping to be one of the first groups to use the new WONCA platform to reach out to our members. As we have not been able to do so, we just created a group to start working toward next year’s Global Conference.
We have created several publications that we want to present on our SIG website:

WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
The WONCA Working Party for Mental Health started a vibrant conversation about models for Adolescent and Child Mental health. We created an initiatory document, and we recently reconnected about this project to decide what to do first, given the overwhelming need.
Dr Svetaz has been working with the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) as an elective Board Member since March 2022. She is also working as a Diversity Consultant for SAHM. Dr Tellier is a SAHM Fellow, active in the International SAHM Committee.
Dr Svetaz, the current SAHM Emissary to the Confederación de Adolescencia y Juventud de Iberoamérica Italia y Caribe (CODAJIC), will serve on the Plenary Selection Sub-committee for the 2024 Annual Meeting of SAHM.
This would be a one-year appointment from March 2023–2024. She will collaborate with other members of this sub-committee to help identify and select speakers for three plenary sessions. She was assigned this role by the upcoming 2023 SAHM President, Manuel OscosSanchez, hoping to create a set of Plenary Sessions that will have global relevance and appeal.
Dr Oscos Sanchez has forged a strong relationship with CODAJIC, which Dr Svetaz has been strengthening lately. Dr Svetaz's goal is to bring CODAJIC Fam Med providers to WONCA.
Her goal in this role will be to create a Plenary on Adolescent Medicine presenting the experiences and richness of the Southern Hemisphere. The WONCA SIG is powerful in Africa, the Asia Pacific, and the East Mediterranean regions, perfect for creating panels with Regional leaders presenting their expertise.
COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO
Dr Pierre Paul Tellier was a consultant for the years 2020 and 2021;we did not have any collaboration with the WHO.
COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO
We are coordinating different submissions of workshops for our Conference 2023. The idea is to map the diverse needs and present a series of workshops. If all are accepted, we will create a track in which each WONCA participant could receive a Certificate of attendance to the 2023 WONCA Adolescent Health Education track by answering pertinent postworkshop educational questions.
So far, these are the essential topics/workshops we envision:
Strength-based communication with our teens,
Strength-based communication with Parents of our teens, The way to make your Office Adolescent-Friendly, Migrant Adolescents and their families, Critical Elements of Inclusive Care, and Panel from the regions represented in our SIG: Africa,Asia, and East Mediterranean.
Continue our exploration with the WONCA Working Party for Mental Health, which has triggered a vibrant conversation about models for Adolescent and Child Mental health, and decide the next steps.
Another project we would love to consider is the creation of an Adolescent Medicine Curriculum for the Southern Hemisphere. Currently, the curriculum suits most Northern countries (Euro Teach), but no one targets the South, where most adolescents live and where more socioeconomic disparities exist. This point would be great to discuss with WONCA and WHO to explore funding.

ABOUT THE WP ON AGEING & HEALTH
The WONCA Special Interest Group on Ageing and Health (formerly Elderly Care) was established in October 2007 and revamped in 2018. It serves as a focus for the development of elderly care issues for WONCA worldwide.
Since the last report the SIG has been very busy despite the pandemic. Membership has grown from 53 to 62 and as the list of contributions below will attest, our members are contributing to a variety of activities in relation to Ageing and Health, as well as their clinical work.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WONCA NEWSLETTER
There have been a number of submissions to the WONCA Newsletter, under the heading “Ageing Lines” These include:
December 2021: Care for the Carer: the need for Universal Health Care
January-February 2022: A case study about the importance of grandparenting which concludes: “making our elderly patients realise they have an important place in our lives is very important”.
March 2022: Vignettes of extraordinary older women for International Women’s Day
August-September 2022: Article by our Polish member on a Polish app which helps older adults to safely execute long term therapies
October 2022: A series of clinical stories from caregivers and older patients
CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND WEBINARS
WONCA Europe London, June 2022: Louise Robinson and Aaseem Farid presented two models of care for older people. Aaseem presented a hospital in the home service, and Louise presented on 'Post diagnostic dementia care in primary care - an evidence based, task shared approach'. These presentations were followed by lively audience discussions.
WONCA Asia Pacific Bali 2022: Three of our members presented on projects relevant to the Asia Pacific region. Fairuz Ali presented on a GP led stroke patients support group in Malaysia. This empowered them to organise activities that are in line to their long term stroke rehabilitation and social integration. It aroused considerable interest from the Indonesian family doctors at the conference on how to implement a model like this.
Lee Kheng Hock presented on a program of social prescribing in Singapore which brings the community, in the form of Mahjong Games (Proven to improve mental function), lessons on the use of the mobile phone to connect to families and other activities into three community hospitals. He introduced the concept of a social prescribing toolkit available from WHO
Louise Robinson presented on two countries to establish whether national dementia strategies improve dementia care. One was a high income country, where a national dementia plan was launched 10 years ago, and the other an LMIC country which does not have a national dementia plan implemented. Despite the existence of a national dementia plan in one of the countries, in both countries she found ongoing disparities in dementia care between rural and urban areas and the need for primary care to provide more post diagnostic care.

CANCER & PALLIATIVE CARE
PLANS FOR 2023
DR
ALAN BARNARD Chair SIG on Cancer & Palliative Care
Thank you for the opportunity to send this brief report.
The Cancer and Palliative Care SIG has not been active this past year.
I have had contact with Dr Atreya Srikant from India who has agreed to participate in the committee, and perhaps to be involved in leadership.
The Primary Palliative Care network has met at regional palliative care meetings and will continue to work in these forums, which overlap to some extent with the WONCA SIG objectives.
I am no longer able to participate as chair of this SIG and would like to hand over the important work of the SIG to a new committee. I would be able to contribute to this committee for the first year of its term, but not as convenor or chair.
1. I ask the WONCA leadership to convene a committee including young doctors and one senior member to continue the work of this SIG
2. Compile a list of potential active members of the SIG
3. Organise a schedule of regular committee meetings and public / professional events
4. Develop the cancer part of the SIG
5. Improve relationships with other SIGs and collaborate as much as possible
Please accept my apologies for the brevity of this report, but I do want the work to continue, if the committee is willing to accept my offer to continue and help with support as above.

COMPLEXITIES IN HEALTH
Complexity drives health. Interconnectedness and inter-dependencies drive health, healthcare, and services. Limited and fragmented approaches fail to deliver high quality continuous personcentered care. Complexity thinking stimulates innovation with pragmatic applications for clinical care.
We are an active group, currently we are looking to expand our social networking and research collaborations to promote the application of complexity theory/science to clinical, organizational issues and biopsychosocial, knowledge and philosophical understandings of primary care.

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
As is traditional, the group has participated in the annual congress of WONCA Europe held this 2022 in London. We have collaborated with our little brothers from the EYFDM EM SIG in the Pre-Conference Marketplace session, supporting them in their magnificent Primary Care Emergencies workshop.
At the WONCA London congress, the group stood out for its original interactive workshop on Daily life Polytrauma, which had very high attendance and received extraordinary reviews. What has distinguished our workshops for years now is the originality of the modalities and the fun way of learning, thanks to the Gaming technique and updated content according to the latest recommendations of the European and American councils on emergency medicine.
The nature of emergency medicine means that those working in this environment are always under stress, which has increased greatly during the pandemic. People are suffering from fatigue, burnout, and depression, and many emergency departments are understaffed, risking the quality of the healthcare they can provide. It is vital for both them and patients that emergency medicine professionals receive what they need: more attention, better recognition, and improved working conditions.
WONCA EM SIG has actively participated in the celebration of Emergency Medicine Day 2022 carried under the logo "We take care of you; please take care of us."The louder we are, the bigger the change.

WONCA SIG on Emergency Medicine during the WONCA Europe 2022 Conference in London
Following the same line, the members of the group Nisanth Menon and Elena Klusova have worked together with the team of The European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM) in elaborating the Policy statement on minimal standards for safe working conditions in Emergency Medicine. On September 12, 2022, the statement has been published in the European Journal of Emergency Medicine.
WONCA EM SIG is named among the co-authors/collaborators of the document.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
EUSEM (The European Society for Emergency Medicine): strong collaboration with the EUSEM Toxicology section.
EURIPA (The European Rural and Isolated Practitioners Association): for two years, we are in close contact with EURIPA, maintaining a long line of joint collaborations in the WONCA and EURIPA congresses. A joint project is currently being prepared for presentation at WONCA Sydney.
Daily collaboration with EYFDM EM SIG
EUSEM, the joint elaboration of the Policy statement on minimal standards for safe working conditions in Emergency Medicine
COLLABORATION WITH THE WHO
1) In accordance with the invitation of The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), two executive members of our SIG have participated in the 6th, 7th, and 8th meetings of the Working Group on Strengthening WHO Preparedness and Response to Health Emergencies representing WONCA. The value and practical objective of this participation have not been very clear, and assessing it with the CEO of the organization will be better to find out if it makes sense to continue participating.
2) From the working group, we have presented the applications for the Technical Advisory Group on Integrated Clinical Care (TAG-IC2), which is the advisory group to WHO for clinical support tools related to primary, emergency, operative, and critical care. This objective, in return, seemed interesting and practical to us. Unfortunately, our application had been unsatisfactory. We have remained on the reservist list for next year's elections.
PLANS FOR 2023
Creation of the quarry of GPs working in EM, who are excited about the collaboration with WONCA, will be our highest priority. We want to expand our borders to the countries hitherto very little involved in our group. Australia, the USA, Canada, and Latin America are among our first goals. We are very interested in establishing contacts with the Nordic countries, meeting our colleagues from Japan and, of course, strengthening our relationship with the scientific societies of European countries, the best addressed by our group so far. Maintaining the closest ties with our colleagues on the African continent, parts of Asia, and the Middle East is our permanent task.
Conferences, Congresses, and other scientific events are our strong point, the activity that the participants like the most. Based on international brainstorming, we have created a database with the top 30 topics for GPs involved in EM at an international level, and we will track the best ideas to present, paying special attention to the development of novel teaching/learning models based on gaming and clinical simulation.
Relationships with other groups and networks, such as EURACT, EURIPA, Mental health WP, and Social Media group´s content repository through the official WONCA channels, are among the tasks to follow.
ER Exchanges — our main goal. As a long-term project, we will prepare a complex base for the creation of a network of low-cost professional exchanges between family doctors who are dedicated to emergencies.

ABOUT THE SIG ON FAMILY VIOLENCE
Violence within families, as well as sexual violence, is a major public health problem all over the world. Violence affects all family members. It affects individuals and society and impacts the quality of life, health behavior, morbidity, and mortality, as well as health care use and costs. Family doctors have an important role in early identification by encouraging disclosure of family violence, providing a sensitive response, and offering possibilities for referral, intervention, and follow-up to all family members,
Our aims are to promote
Evidence-based primary care and prevention for those affected by family violence to enhance the safety, health, and quality of life of families and individuals
Effective interdisciplinary care for those affected by family violence
92 WONCA | 2022
To achieve them, our objectives are to:
1. Update and disseminate available evidence and resources on family violence in general practice/family medicine and primary care settings, whilst promoting, developing, and sharing guidance and training on family violence for primary care professionals to enhance their attitudes, skills, and knowledge about family violence.
2. Encourage research and quality improvement on this topic for family physicians and other primary health care teams
3. Promote the involvement of national academies and colleges to develop policies and training on family violence and encourage individuals and organizations to raise awareness of family violence in the professional community.

ACTIONS TO INCREASE GEOGRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION
The members of the Executive Board of the SIG on LGBTQ Health were selected by taking into account geographical regional representation. Each representative would be in contact with the members of their region.
YOUNG DOCTORS INCLUSION
Workshops at WONCA congresses created an opportunity to meet young physicians and introduce SIG on LGBTQ Health. There with all the executive board consists of young doctors, too.
ACTIONS TO ENSURE GENDER EQUITY
LGBTIQ+ issues is also the main topic of the concept of gender equality/equity. It is essential that all organizations that want to take a step towards gender equality/equity should also be sensitive about LGBTIQ+ rights. Establishing a SIG on LGBTQ Health within WONCA means being inclusive of both LGBTIQ+ physicians and LGBTIQ+ health issues and needs. SIG on LGBT Health is proud of being inclusive for all gender and sexual identities and to be the direct voice of LGBTIQ+ physicians in WONCA.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
A workshop titled "How to be an ally for LGBTQIA patients?" (with authors Julien Artigny, Stuart Holmes, Filiz Ak, Fred Thomas) carried out by SIG members and a presentation titled "Let’s co-create a common European framework for LGBTIQ+ health within family medicine/general practice curricula" (with authors Filiz Ak, Julien Artigny, Stuart Holmes, Fred Thomas) was made in 27th WONCA Europe Conference. During the online meetings of SIG members suggestions for conducting scientific research were shared. It was planned to carry out research by turning it into a project.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
SIG on family violence offered to contact SIG on LGBTQ Health and carry out a research project together. We hope to keep in touch on this matter.
PLANS FOR 2023
For 2023 SIG on LGBTQ on Health plans to carry out scientific research projects by reaching family physicians and general practitioners working in WONCA member countries, to do research to identify local health problems and needs by reaching out to local LGBTIQ+ associations, and to preparing an inclusive curriculum proposal for family medicine and general practice residency programs.

NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASES
DR ANA CEBRIÁN Chair SIG on Non-communicable diseases
ABOUT THE SIG ON NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Quaternary prevention provides a complex but necessary approach oriented to provide person -focused care; promote equity in healthcare; prevent overdiagnosis, unnecessary interventions, and avoid harm: and so, in few words, to humanize medicine. All the efforts within this global movement combine ethical sustainability with critical thinking, to oppose the vision of health as a commodity.
Our mission is to create an international network to support ongoing activities and promote dissemination and skills to apply the concepts all over the world.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
We participated in numerous activities at the WONCA Europe congress:
Webinars with other international societies, and building bridges of communication with them.
Internal meetings to bring together views on topics of interest in chronic diseases.
Course review for WONCA endorsement.
Proposal for activities to the executive committee.
Proposal for the creation of the European Non-Communicable Diseases Special Interest Group.
Proposal for a course on chronic care with a specific, broad and discussed agenda, and funding sought.
GROUPS COLLABORATION
Collaboration with the International Society of Nephrology and KDIGO.
PLANS FOR 2023

POINT OF CARE TESTING
ABOUT THE SIG ON POINT OF CARE TESTING
DR ROGIER HOPSTAKEN
Chair SIG on Point of care testing
DR SUSANNE MATTHEWS Chair SIG on Point of care testing
Point-of-care testing refers to rapid, pathology testing that informs the professional and patient during the patient consultation. POCT is rapidly evolving and may benefit health care when used properly. The SIG provides a forum for family doctors to meet, discuss, learn, and collaborate.
99 WONCA | 2022
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
We have updated our member list. We have informed our members of new activities. We have designed and sent an online survey to our members and will continue doing so for every new member. We will analyze the data in Q1–Q2.
We have presented on several international occasions and invited GPs to become part of our WONCA SIG community. I have presented various global webinars, together with industrial and diagnostic partners, and highlighted our WONCA SIG work.
I have presented on POCT at the ECCMID (Lisbon) conference to discuss and stimulate more interaction and collaboration between microbiologists and primary care throughout the world.
I have presented and participated in discussion panels for the French Cooperation Santé and French parliament members to enhance actions to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with the help of POCT solutions.
We have taken our first steps to start an open, WONCA communication platform.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
I have presented on POCT and WONCA involvement in a webinar of the African PHC group, initiated by Prof. Shabir Moosa.
We have proposed a SIG workshop and specific POCT-AMR presentation for the WONCA London meeting. I had to withdraw because only the workshop was accepted. Weighing the pros and cons of leaving busy general practice (without finding a colleague to replace me) made me decide to cancel.
I am one of the initiators of the ENASPOC scientific expert group on CRP POCT to combat AMR.
We have (co)organized a consensus meeting in Lisbon, and (co)organized a full-day workshop with seven EU teams in Brussels to move from evidence into action regarding the country implementation of CRP POCT in various countries. I have asked the scientific GP experts to consider membership in our SIG.
PLANS FOR 2023
Open our interactive, WONCA communication platform for members;
Give active, scientific, and implementation input on POCT communication platform and enhance online interaction;
Engage with WHO on vision and possible interaction;
Analyze members' survey and shot communication for the results and action points;
Apply for SIG workshop WONCA, Sydney;
Strengthen communication with our administrative office at the Flinders University, Australia;
Arrange new lectures on POCT for various professional groups of health care workers. (some already planned in Q1); and
Discuss POCT with various governments on the facilitation of proven POCT solutions (some already planned in Q1).

QUATERNARY PREVENTION & OVERMEDICALIZATION
ABOUT THE
Promote Quaternary Prevention (P4) focus on research questions.
DR KARIN KOPITOWSKI Chair SIG on Quaternary Prevention & Overmedicalization
Support national societies to include P4 and over-medicalization in the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Promote understanding of overmedicalization and the need for P4 in mass media.
Organize activities oriented to disseminate P4.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
During 2022, we have carried out the following activities:
At the International Congress of Family Medicine in Ecuador, workshops, and presentations related to the theme have been developed.
At the National Congress of the Argentine Federation of Family and Community Medicine, the central conference was on Quaternary Prevention and the de-implementation of low-value practices.
102 WONCA | 2022
In the Documents prepared at the Cumbre in Guatemala, the emphasis was on the need for a look from the quaternary prevention in the profile of specialists in family medicine. We work on the incorporation of P4 content in undergraduate programs in medical careers at public and private universities in Argentina.
In some Universities, we saw Content is transversal, which means there is not just one class with the subject but that the perspective of P4 informs the Study Plan.
Undoubtedly, four activities that I consider very relevant are
1) Participation in the workshop at the 2022 Preventing Overdiagnosis Conference on overdiagnosis in low- and middle-income countries.
2) The publication of a panoramic review with that same working group.
3) Attendance at the Round Table of the organization Choosing Wisely in Lisbon. In this event, I was able to network with people from many countries and have elements to promote Choosing Wisely in countries where there are none yet.
4) Participation in the advisory board of the Global Center for Sustainable Health Care. I share the advisory board with Fionna Godlee, Victor Montori, Gordon Guyatt, and Anna Stavdal.
Links of interest to publications and initiatives
Sustainable Healthcare
Overdiagnosis and overuse of diagnostic and screening tests in lowincome and middle-income countries: a scoping review
“Deimplement” low-value practices: an ethical imperative
Quaternary Prevention
PLANS FOR 2023
By the year 2023, through the network with Choosing Wisely and with the Global Initiative for Sustainable Care, we will be able to advance in greater dissemination and advocacy of quaternary prevention issues.
It is necessary to continue generating evidence on the subject.
We will ensure that in every Congress and event of Family Medicine, there is a P4 outlook. Continue working on supporting institutions that want to de-implement lowvalue practices. In this sense, we are already working with the Ministry of Health of Argentina and some health institutions.
We will participate in academic events on Family Medicine and other specialties (it is imperative to advocate in other areas. In 2022, we have done so with Gynecology and Endocrinology Societies)
We will also participate in the 2023 Preventing Overdiagnosis Conference in Copenhagen.

The European Young Family Doctors Movement face-to-face council meeting in London
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
For EYFDM, 2022 has been a busy year! Indeed, it had been such a long year that we were still VdGM at the beginning of the year!
We had two ordinary council meetings, in January and June, involving some very big discussions, votes, and elections (Ikbal Humay Arman was elected Events Officer in January; Stuart Holmes became President-Elect; and Aaron Poppleton elected as WONCA Europe-EYFDM Liaison in June).
We also had an informal face-to-face council meeting in London in June as part of clarifying our vision and aims as well as how we want to present ourselves publicly.
We held our 7th Forum in January in Edinburgh. This was a great way to come back together in a fantastic city. We had amazing workshops, a ceilidh (Scottish dance) and very inspiring speakers! We also recognized the contributions of Raquel Gomez Bravo, giving her the semiannual Being Young Staying Young award for a GP who, in spite of not being a young doctor anymore, has continued to support our work and movement.
During the main conference, young doctors contributed actively with many workshops and presentations, and for the first time, EYFDM was asked to run a plenary session, with Julien Artigny, Marina Jotic Ivanovic, and Nick Mamo taking on this task. The plenary was very well received and sparked great discussion. We also raised a record €4600 for our bursary fund to support young doctors from lower-income countries.
In September, the executive met in Poland to make plans for the year ahead and kept meeting every month to ensure we kept developing our movement.
Our exchanges have also been picking up very well after the COVID restrictions were mostly lifted. We have had several exchanges with over twelve confirmed to have completed their exchanges and all tasks associated.
PLANS FOR 2023
This is a big year for EYFDM. After changing our name, we are now finalizing the process to become an independent association registered in the Netherlands. We are also getting ready to present our new logo and host our new website. Moreover, we have some exciting policy development plans specifically around accessibility in particularly making events more family-friendly and working on our fundraising in this new era for our movement.

ABOUT POLARIS
Polaris is the North American Young Doctors Movement. Our goal is to create a strong network of early-career physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students in Canada, the USA, and Caribbean who are passionate about a career in family medicine and global health.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
Our Polaris YDM has partaken in a range of activities throughout the year, be it within each of our regions (Canada, USA, and Caribbean) or as a collective group. These activities included attending conference events, developing webinars, creating educational resources, and increasing engagement across our social media platforms.
To increase comfort in conducting virtual care encounters, Rohini co-founded the Virtual Care Working Group within the College of Family Physicians of CanadaSection of Medical Students. As part of this, she helped develop a virtual care module that can be used by medical students to help navigate a virtual care encounter. It is now available online for students’ use.
Our USA colleagues had a successful preconference global health summit before FMX 2022 held in Washington, D.C., in September 2022.They continued to work hard in preparing a quarterly global health webinar series that will be available for everyone.
To illustrate the broad scope of clinical practice in which our physicians, residents, and medical students work and learn, we developed a spotlight of the month campaign using our social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook: @woncapolaris), highlighting the clinical and non-clinical activities of one individual in our region each month.
Moreover, we have developed a “debunking myths in family medicine” campaign to help increase awareness of what the field of family medicine entails.
Some examples of myths we have debunked include “family physicians do not provide life-saving care”and “family physicians only hand out referrals.” We hope to break down common misconceptions and broaden our understanding of what family medicine has to offer.
Our Polaris executive team continued to develop newsletters that highlight relevant topics in family medicine Our newsletters in 2022 focused on two main topics: 1) resiliency and 2) migrant health. They are available for the public to view on our Polaris website.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
Our Polaris members have worked closely with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
Our USA colleagues have helped develop a successful pre-conference global health summit for the annual FMX 2022. Furthermore, through her involvements with the CFPC, Rohini Pasricha collaborated with the Academic Family Medicine (AFM) team and shared her insights on increasing family medicine engagement and recruitment as a panelist speaker at the Family Medicine Forum 2022 in Toronto, Canada.
Our Polaris executive member, Brunèe Dorsett has taken on the role of YDM representative in the WONCA Working Party on Education. In this role, she is helping develop a webinar for the YDM members on education in family medicine.
PLANS FOR 2023
Our plan for 2023 is to continue our current initiatives including our quarterly newsletters, myth-busters, and spotlight of the month campaigns, as well as engagement at various conferences (within our regions and abroad). We will be collaborating with the WONCA Working Party on Digital Health to develop a webinar for March 2023 made available to all YDM members.
Additionally, we are in the process of developing a mentorship program for our Polaris members that will allow mentors and mentees to engage in “coffee-chat” conversations with one another and exchange experiences, interests, and learn from one another. Our goal is to facilitate large Zoom sessions for our members (approximately 3–4 sessions throughout the year) and then use breakout rooms to facilitate these mentor/mentee relationships.

ABOUT THE SPICE ROUTE
The Spice Route is the WONCA South Asia Region working group for new and future doctors who have an interest in family or general practice. It aims to promote excellence in this field and address challenges pertaining to global health.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN 2022
The Spice Route logo was redesigned by the WONCA Communication and PR Officer (Maria Dolores Zavala) on request. After the joint consensus of and approval by all council members, the logo is now being used by all members.
To commemorate the World Family Doctor Day on May 19, 2022, the Spice Route conducted a WONCA webinar based on the WFDD theme “Always there to care.” The session had three speakers– one each from Pakistan, Bhutan and India. It witnessed high attendance from young doctors in the region. All members updated their social media profiles with WFDD templates by WONCA.
The Spice Route South Asia Council selected important days to be celebrated at the South Asia level as a part of the regular CPD program. In the second half of 2022, we celebrated World Hepatitis Day on July 28, 2022, by creating a video presentation. The Spice Route team, Bhutan, hosted the webinar for the World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2022.
Recognizing the importance of rising burden, the Spice Route team, Pakistan, celebrated the World Diabetes Day on November 14 by organizing a webinar. The webinar’s theme was “Access to Diabetes Care.” Young doctors from all over the region, including countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal,India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, participated in the webinar.
WONCA GROUPS COLLABORATION
The Spice Route team organized a virtual exchange program with the EYFDM on March 19, 2022. Two countries (Nepal and Sri Lanka) from Spice Route and two countries (Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Netherlands) from EYFDM made videos to display the primary care practices in their country.
Another virtual exchange program was organized on October 21, 2022 between the Rajkumar Movement and the Spice Route Movement. The opening remark was an introduction through a video by TRM and TSR. This was followed by video presentations from Malaysia and Thailand of the Rajkumar Movement and from India and Pakistan of the Spice Route Movement. Both the sessions were successful in providing a platform for collaboration between young doctors in the regions.
PLANS FOR 2023
The Spice Route Movement is in the process of planning inter-country exchange programs between the six nations under the Spice Route South Asia Region. The FM 360 Exchange team led by Gobith has devised guidelines for this regional exchange program and is in the process of planning.
The goal of this program is to provide insights into the family medicine practice in the region. More webinars are being planned in the coming year to celebrate important days as a part of the CPD program.

BYLAWS & GOVERNANCE
COMMITTEE’S WORK IN 2022
The WONCA Bylaws and Governance Committee of 2021–2023 comprises Shabir Moosa (South Africa), Steve Mowle (UnitedKingdom), Henry Lawson (Ghana), GabrielaDi Coce (Argentina), Thomas Meono (Costa Rica), and Francine Lemire (Canada). The committee has only met once in 2022 (on March 3).
It deliberated on the 2021 term of the previous committee as well as the outstanding issues. It was proposed that the members and the voting structure in the bylaws be the priority. It was also felt that this could only be addressed after the Greek complaints were dealt with by the Executive Committee.
Other issues ,e.g., the definition of family medicine and family doctors, and a discussion on the vision, mission, and values of WONCA, were deferred till the culmination of the Executive Committee’s Strategic Planning process that is currently underway. Certain questions were raised during the meeting about how regional bylaws could be addressed.
It was felt that the work of the committee needed review and prioritization by the Executive Committee. A report on this was submitted to the Executive Committee on August 25, 2022.
The proposals in the report were supported by the Executive Committee, but there was a lack of clarity among the Executive Committee members on the issue of membership and voting, and a revised report was requested, and a discussion was proposed on these issues. This revised report was tabled, but it is yet to be discussed by the Executive Committee.
PLANS FOR 2023
The WONCA Bylaws and Governance Committee plans to meet again in the first quarter of 2023 to discuss the priorities determined by the Executive Committee in the latter’s Jan–Feb meetings so that the proposals for the Council, if any, would be ready by October 2023.
I wish to share my appreciation for all of the members of the committee for the work done thus far.

FINANCE COMMITTEE
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
The Finance Committee, once again, have offered wise and practical advice across the year enabling us to adapt and adjust fairly and equitably to keep the budget balanced. Their support has been invaluable. I remain most grateful for the extraordinary hard work of our CEO Harris Lygidakis, finance officer Marie Mahieux and the secretariat who have budgeted with care and caution as we moved through another challenging year.
THE CHALLENGES FACED IN 2022:
1: MOVING BANK ACCOUNTS
Two new main bank accounts have now been opened for the WONCA Association: in Belgium (FINTRO) and in Switzerland (Banque Cantonale de Genève). Establishing these accounts was extremely challenging for various reasons. When finally opened in August, all contracts were transferred from BVI to Swiss WONCA (including staff, and vendors/services). The bank account difficulties delayed the annual invoicing of member organisations but did allow us to establish a merchant account with PayPal. Other credit account options are being explored.
2: TRANSITION OF WONCA’S LEGAL DOMICILE
2022 has proved a significant year for the cost of transition from the old BritishVirgin-Islands based WONCA International Inc. (BVI)- legal domicile to the new Swiss-based WONCA Association. Until European Bank accounts were in place, two legal entities were in operation. For 2022, two separate finance audits are necessary.
However, the move to Switzerland is proving advantageous. The Swiss authorities have granted tax exemption to the WONCA Association, formally recognising its non-profit status. When finally achieved, some restrictions currently placed on financial transactions, because of BVI’s status and money laundering concerns, will no longer exist.
3: INFLATION
The high international levels of inflation, impacting at 10% on the secretariat, and across all operations, have necessitated careful budgeting. A travel policy has been introduced requiring advanced planning with the use of a travel platform to establish and limit claims to the most economical flights with clear agreement on what can and cannot be claimed.
OVERALL END OF YEAR FINANCIAL POSITION:
We have completed 2022 with a small surplus of $58,837.The unaudited yearend accrued revenue of $733,149 sits against expenses of $674,312. Our core reserves have increased to $482,563 which includes the $250,000 reserve funds recommended by the Finance Committee.
Member organisation fees constitute 69.8% of our revenue. Despite the delays in invoicing, 95% of the fees had been paid by the year end. We thank member organisations for their prompt payment and trust, as credit card and PayPal options become available, that the process will become increasingly streamlined. Accreditation of training programmes and practices provided 16.6%, conference levies 6.1% and direct membership 4.0% of the revenue. For 2023, WONCA is piloting a strategy for donations and project grants to increase the organisation’s activities and widen income streams.
MOVING FORWARD:
From 1 Jan 2023, WONCA is operating exclusively from the Swiss Association as we work on the liquidation of BVI WONCA. This has multiple steps which require time and include: moving assets from the Singapore bank to Swiss WONCA, closure of the Singapore account, transferring liabilities, appointing a liquidator, filing with authorities. We aim to complete by the end of 2023.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE’S WORK IN 2022
We assessed one associated membership: International Federation of Hospitals. We met in August 2022 via Zoom. We assessed one associated membership: International Federation of Hospitals. We are now assessing a new membership: Semergen (with a new composition due to conflict of interest of two members)
PLANS FOR 2023
To finish the new member application of Semergen.
To work with the bylaw committee on the regulation of some special situations so as to have several family medicine associations within the same country.
ORGANIZATIONAL EQUITY COMMITTEE
The Organizational Equity Committee (OEC) is a statutory committee of World WONCA established under the world bylaws of the organization. The mission of the OEC is to identify and address various issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion within the institution of WONCA itself (different from the broader issue of health equity).

Julien Artigny (France)
Dora Bernal (Colombia)
Innocent Besigye (Uganda)
Suha Hamshari (Palestinian Territory)
Hina Jawaid (Pakistan)
Elizabeth Reji (South Africa)
Marjorie Cross (Australia )
COMMITTEE’S WORK IN 2022
In prior years, the OEC identified and address issues of gender equity, economic equity, language equity, broadband equity, and pandemic-related inequities.
In prior cycles, the committee identified the following issues:
Gender Equity – Variation was considerable on the regions, and there seemed to be a lack of programs or plans to empower women to enter leadership positions. In addition, safety and inclusion of LGBTQ+ members was an aspect of significant concern.
Economic Equity – Regional inequities continue to be observed between low, middle and high income countries. These inequities limit participation of family doctors, particularly from low income countries due to high costs of WONCA meetings, and thus also impacts representation within the organization.
Language Equity – English language proficiency was noted to impact ability to participate in leadership, and also leaving non-English language proficient members feeling disenfranchised – especially when language interpretation is not available. Anglophone cultural and traditional norms also influence the organization, and may be less known to people from countries without this socio-cultural background.
123
PROF MARIA PILAR ASTIER PENA
WONCA | 2022
Chair of the Membership Committee
Anglophone cultural and traditional norms also influence the organization, and may be less known to people from countries without this socio-cultural background.
Broadband Equity – Lack of digital access and inequities in broadband high-speed reliable internet affects all regions, and more disproportionately those from low income countries. With the increase in online meetings and events, the pandemic has also highlighted the now essential nature of having a high quality internet connection.
Pandemic-related inequities –Members identified a global disparity in access to personal protective equipment during the pandemic and the illness, as well as concerns that the illness and death of family doctors was under reported. In addition, vaccine access has also been inadequately available to some members.
More recently the committee identified ethnic, racial and regional inequities as being of concern within the organization as well.
One of the first actions of the committee in this cycle was to adjust the membership to include the past chair in order to maintain continuity, and include representation from every region – something not normally accommodated in the organizational bylaws.
In addition, the Committee advanced a motion to recommend the formation of an Organizational Equity Committee for each individual region of WONCA. More recently, the OEC has been working on preparing an educational program to support regions in the development of such regional committees, including one potential session to be delivered at World WONCA.

WORLD FAMILY DOCTOR DAY 2022
World Family Doctor Day (FDD) – 19th May - was first declared by WONCA in 2010 and it has become a day to highlight the role and contribution of family doctors and primary care teams in healthcare systems around the world.
This celebration is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the central role of Family Doctors in the delivery of personal, comprehensive and continuing health care for all patients. It’s also a chance to celebrate the progress being made in family medicine and the special contributions of primary care teams globally.
The 2022 theme was: Family Doctors, Always There to Care!

Family Doctors are present at all times, and continuity is a fundamental feature of their work. They continuously provide care in all stages of patients’ lives, and throughout the big and small moments. Continuity is also present in care through the ongoing follow-up carried out to patients, where coordination with other levels of care and health care professionals is crucial. Lastly, continuity represents their constant preparation and skills development, uninterrupted research, and the ability to adapt and build resilience to change, technologies, methodologies, and educational strategies.
Family doctors and primary care professionals are there, wherever and whenever needed Always at the front line —in war, health crises and times of peace. They are part of the communities they work with, proactively reaching and engaging with members, sharing their core values, creating a unique connection with their patients, and building bonds of trust

WFDD AT THE WONCA REGIONS
AFRICA REGION
When WONCA declared World Family Doctor Day WFDD on 19 May every year in Cancún, Mexico 2010, many family physicians and general practitioners from Africa Region were there. Every year since 2010, family Doctors in the WONCA Africa region participate in this global event.
This year’s theme – ‘family doctors always there to care’, is very apt as it encapsulates the essence of the family physician who is always there to care.
Many countries in the WONCA Africa region participated in this year's celebration. In Nigeria, national and regional events were carried out successfully, with 2 to 7-day activities depending on their nature. Thirteen states of Nigeria, including Lagos, Cross River, Oyo and Rivers States, had a variety of activities, including Health walk-in beautifully branded WFDD t-shirts, Free Medical Outreaches in underserved communities, health talks, Career counselling for medical doctors, Radio TV shows, free continuous professional development lectures for doctors and dinner night.
The Wonca Working Party on Women in Family Medicine WWPWFM organized an event on 19 May 2022, focused on ‘the uniqueness of women family doctors: always there to care’. Speakers from West Africa, Central/East Africa and South Africa participated in this session, along with WONCA President Prof Anna Stavdal, Dr Dan Abubakar, WONCA Africa President, Chair of WONCA Working Party on Women Dr Mimi Doohan and Past Chairs Dr Amanda Barnard and Dr Kate Anteyi. This event gathered over 100 doctors from Africa and beyond.
Many African countries took this day as an opportunity to call government agencies, medical houses, and legislative and executive arms of government to create awareness of the critical roles of family doctors in health care systems. Ghana, for example, planned an advocacy meeting headed by the Society of Family Physicians of Ghana SOFPOG, a wellattended meeting with stakeholders, and the Minister of Volta Region and the Regional Health Directorate.

ASIA PACIFIC REGION
In the Asia Pacific Region, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) promoted World Family Doctor Day as a timely reminder that general practice care needs a shot in the arm to ensure GPs can continue to meet patient needs.
Through a video, the RACGP President Adj. Professor Karen Price invited the audience to join the 2022 campaign and recognise GP contributions to healthcare.
In China, WONCA's three member organizations jointly organised the celebration of World Family Doctor Day 2022 with the theme of "Contract with family doctors and keep healthy". The event was successfully held both online and in person. It showed the situation of primary care practitioners and managers, community residents, and local health organizations in China to the public. About 250,000 people watched the celebration and gained a deeper understanding of family medicine. The General Practice Branch of Cross-Strait Medicine Exchange Association organized a special online event for all family doctors. The Chinese Taipei Association of Family Medicine also carried out a mountain hike at the Warship Rock in the Yangming Mountains to commemorate this celebration.

ACCREDITATION & CERTIFICATION
Congratulations: This year has seen the full WONCA accreditation of an innovative new Clinical Masters programme in Family Medicine at the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain. We congratulate the team, led by Professor Afif Bin Salih, on their remarkable achievement in graduating the first cohort of 40 students to work independently in Bahrain’s Primary Health Care (PHC) centres.
The accreditation process: The two-year Clinical Masters curriculum was endorsed by WONCA in February 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of meeting WONCA’s postgraduate training standards (here) for full accreditation at graduation in March 2022. A virtual support visit was held in March 2021 and face to face full accreditation in March 2022. Professors Marie Andrades (Pakistan) and Val Wass (UK), from the WONCA Working Party on Education led all visits.
Why is this Clinical Master’s programme innovative? Bahrain has 27 well established PHC centres. All offer a wide range of multi-professional services, from acute to preventative, adapted to patient needs in different localities. To increase the ratio of skilled family physicians per patient in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the Bahrain Government supported AGU to develop a clinical Masters programme for doctors resident in the GCC. The course innovatively balances training in primary and secondary focusing content on relevance to family medicine and includes a quality improvement project to nurture critical appraisal and evidence-based practice.
Achievements: Despite the pandemic , training with patients in the PHC centres was maintained and successfully balanced with the secondary care rotations which were not service driven. All students successfully met both their clinical competency assessments and university credit requirements.
What was learnt?
i: Respect and mutual understanding between primary care and secondary care strengthened as specialist content was negotiated to focus on common PHC presentations.
ii: The quality improvement programme, despite the effort and time, was valued by students.
iii: The programme proved highly socially accountable. Students contributed to Covid-19 initiatives and became community focused volunteering for other charity roles .
iv: University IT links, supported high levels of recording of student progress, enabling struggling students to be supported and the development of a student app.
Conclusion: WONCA has been able to use the Education Working Parties postgraduate training standards to support the AGU’s innovative clinical Masters PHC curriculum from conception through to graduation. This Government supported initiative to train GCC county doctors to work locally strengthened understanding and support for PHC from secondary care. Students graduated with a strong sense of social accountability.
