President Report

I will be using the strategic plan goals and objectives to guide the work of WONCA in the next two years.
Firstly, thank you to Anna Stavdal for her leadership over the past two years. I applaud her efforts to ensure stronger governance principles within WONCA and the Executive. Thank you also to Harris Lygidakis and his team at the secretariat, particularly Andrea, Lola and Roberto, for their hard work and diligence in serving WONCA, doing all that behind the scenes work that enables us to have better processes, communicate more easily and maintain WONCA’s work throughout the world. Thank you to the team and I look forward to continuing to work with you for the next two years.
WONCA Strategic plan 2023-27
One of the key leadership activities which Anna Stavdal has driven, and which Harris and I have had significant input to is the process of formulating a strategic plan for WONCA 2023-2027. As many of you know this began with a SWOT analysis (strengths weaknesses opportunities and threats) conducted with multiple focus groups, people from a variety of regions, groups, career stage and engagement within our organisation. It was reassuring and exciting to find that most of the groups had similar things to say. We went on to use this information to inform goals and objectives for the draft plan. Please refer to the Strategic Plan document on page 18.
I will be using the strategic plan goals and objectives to guide the work of WONCA in the next two years. Actions need to be linked to budget and this is where the limitations for WONCA are likely to arise. Our CEO has also given significant consideration to the specific activities which will enable us to achieve objectives in coming years.
Complaints Committee - membership and voting issues
One of my more difficult activities as President-elect has been to chair a Complaints Committee relating to a member complaint. This committee had to get familiar with the bylaws on membership issues and our membership committee processes. A report was presented to the World Council in Sydney in October.
That committee felt that a number of other issues were raised relating to multiple membership organisations in a country and voting. This was not the only forum where such issues have been raised and as such we have established a Taskforce on Membership and Voting to be chaired by Dr Francine Lemire (Canada) which will take an in-depth look at these issues for the first time since about 1998. The process will include stakeholder consultation and the final report is expected at the World Council coming to Lisbon in 2025.
Nominations and Awards committee
The President-elect also chairs the nominations committee and this year the nominations for the WONCA Fellowship award (the most prestigious award) were not as many as I had hoped. WONCA awards are a way that we can acknowledge the contributions to WONCA of the many volunteers who do such great work within our organisation. I encourage WONCA regions and WONCA groups (Working Parties and Special Interest Groups) to nominate deserving colleagues in future years.
The limitations on the WONCA Honorary Life Direct Member award permitted that only 25 living people could hold it (other than past presidents). I believe that WONCA should be generous in recognising family doctors and other health professionals who have contributed significantly to our specialty without imposing numerical constraints. As such the Nominations and Awards committee recommended to Council that the organisational policies be changed to remove the number limit of 25 holders. Council approved this recommendation.
Other Committees and greetings
A new initiative for WONCA has been a meeting of Chairs of Working Parties and Special Interest groups chaired by the President-elect. It’s been a late-night meeting for me but it’s been great fun. It is wonderful to see how enthusiastic the chairs of our WONCA groups are, and how excited they all were to be able to make contact with each other in this way. This meeting has been such a success and so well received, that I intend to continue this initiative during my term of office as president. The WONCA portal should further enhance communication between WONCA groups.

I was involved in numerous committees relating to the WONCA Sydney 2023 conference including the Host Organising Committee and the International Advisory Committee. Thank you to those WONCA colleagues who agreed to serve on the International Advisory Committee as this group was able to give important input to the local Australian team as to what happens in WONCA conferences.
Thank you to those who have asked me for electronic greetings to their conferences and other celebration events. It was a privilege to participate in a small way in your events and I look forward to being able to do this more as your WONCA president. My commitment to the Environment will mean that I will prioritise travel to WONCA events, so unfortunately as much as I love meeting my colleagues in their own countries, electronic greetings may be necessary.
Organisational Strategy for Climate change
Organisations that are not adapting strategy to take climate change into account are planning for a world that doesn’t exist. Over the last 12 months I have therefore been in discussion with leaders of our WONCA Working Party on the Environment, now called the WONCA Working Party on Planetary Health. My aim is that WONCA is seen as a “Green leader” by our Member Organisations and other small international not-for-profit organisations – leading by example in green initiatives.
We are already showing strong external leadership and lobbying for sustainable healthcare through our Working Party. I would like to also look inwardly to consider our carbon footprint. Our Working Party, with my support, has this year produced a WONCA Planetary Health and Sustainable Events Policy to promote green WONCA conferences.

Our World conference in Sydney held a highly successful green day on Saturday 28th October: any of us wore green, we had keynote speeches from leaders in planetary health in Enrique Barros and Maria Neira, the press interviewed multiple people and we all gave more thought to our role in improving carbon footprint.
WONCA Executive has approved the Working Party’s “Statement to Protect Health by committing to fossil fuel non-proliferation and climate action” and it’s online here. A reminder to consider signing the related “Call for Action” calling for a just and equitable transition to sustainable energy and safeguard health. Every family doctor can join and support this advocacy by signing the open letter, sharing it with colleagues.
I am privileged to have been invited to serve on the Lancet Commission on Sustainable Healthcare Executive Committee with highly knowledgeable colleagues from around the world. I look forward to sharing the outcomes of this group.
What’s coming in 2024? Governance, greening and growth
I had the priviledge of taking up the great honour you have bestowed on me in becoming the WONCA President in October, at the WONCA World conference in Sydney. I look forward to meeting more colleagues, listening to your views. I will be looking for strong governance in WONCA, to better bring us together as a stronger voice by strengthening internal policies in order that we may move forward. Like my poredecessors I look for growth despite our limited budget and Michael Kidd always reminds me to never forget “a family doctor for every family”.

Immediate Past President Report

Our organization is growing.
2023—what a year! This year marked the celebration of WONCA’s 50th anniversary, the first in-person WONCA Conference in 5 years, the first fully hybrid WONCA Council, and the launch of a new strategic plan. Our organization is growing, and just before 2024, the WONCA BVI branch was closed, and the WONCA Association was established with WONCA HQ in Brussels.
I am deeply grateful to CEO Harris Lygidakis for all the efforts he has put into leading WONCA operations under the most trying circumstances. I would also like to extend my thanks to the Secretariat staff—Andrea Zard, Maria Zavala, and Roberto Munoz—for their efficiency and kindness.
I am saluting all of you who have put in a huge amount of volunteer work in your different roles in statutory committees, working parties, and special interest groups.
Last but not least, a big thank you to the members of the WONCA executive committee 2021–2023.
Executive Meetings
In total, five online meetings have been conducted, one of which lasted over two days. Moreover, two out of these were held in person over five days altogether. Despite variable meeting attendance, all meetings have been conducted with quorum.
The President-elect, Honorary Treasurer, and I have had regular online meetings with the CEO throughout the year.
The CEO and the Secretariat
The CEO and I have met virtually at least once weekly on average. I have had the opportunity to visit the Secretariat several times, and the visits have been scheduled in connection with virtual executive meetings and WONCA Europe’s conference in Brussels, followed by a two-day long in-person executive meeting.
It has been invaluable for me to stay in close contact with the Secretariat team and follow the several, partly troublesome, steps of the transition of the Secretariat, the closing of the BVI branch, and the establishment of the WONCA Association. A spin-off effect of this has been the opportunity to meet with the members and working groups present in the vicinity of Brussels.
Meeting the membership
To build a common identity, people need to meet. Altogether, I have traveled for nearly 150 days for WONCA since the pandemic restrictions were lifted in May/June last year. As we all know, the pandemic disrupted the planned conferences, which was the case for the South American and the East Mediterranean regions this year.
the number of days that I travaled for WONCA
I have attended regional conferences in all regions at least once since I was elected president-elect in 2018. There are usually fewer regional conferences in the year of the WONCA World Conference. In 2023, I attended the WONCA Europe Conference and a high-level meeting on Primary Care in Washington, DC.
It has been a privilege to be invited to conferences and meetings in countries of several member organizations, which has allowed me to talk to, and with, members on their home turfs, such as in Tainan, Taiwan, for their Spring conference in March, in Chengdu, China, for the Cross Straits Conference in April, and in Sweden for the 50th anniversary of the Swedish College in May. I thank you for receiving me with generosity and kindness.
Some conferences have taken place in a hybrid format, and my attendance has been virtual. The monthly newsletter serves the purpose of shortening the distance between the leadership and the ordinary members. Moreover, besides building identity, the newsletter contributes to increased visibility of what WONCA stands for. The topics of my messages have been chosen according to the following three goals: build identity, increase visibility, and exert influence.
Representing WONCA
To exert influence, WONCA needs to be visible in different arenas, meet and work with other professional organizations, and take part in policy dialogues with healthcare stakeholders.
Mapping WONCA’s external network has been important in prioritizing where and how to engage with other organizations.
a. Other Professional Organizations
The World Psychiatric Association invited me to give presentations at their annual conferences in Bangkok in 2022 and Vienna in 2023.
I represented WONCA and contributed to a workshop at the International Conference on Preventing Overdiagnosis in Copenhagen in August 2023.
WONCA has worked closely with the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA), especially concerning statements and advocacy actions at the World Health

Assembly. In October, WONCA and WFPHA signed a Memorandum of Understanding, aiming at working together closely in the future and building a strong foundation with other professional organizations to increase advocacy for strong primary care, which is one of the objectives of WONCA’s WHO work for the 2021–2023 term. Together, WONCA and WFPHA will pursue the idea and engage with other primary care organizations in the time to come.
b. International Stakeholders
WHO
WHO is the most important international stakeholder for WONCA. Here, I refer to the report of WHO liaison Val Wass. In addition to our mutual WHO activities, I was invited as a speaker at the meeting on “Wellbeing Economies” at the WHO Europe Regional Office in March 2023.

Civil Society Commission
This year, a WONCA delegation was present at the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May as usual.
It is also worth mentioning the side event WONCA co-hosted with the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the Besrour Center at the WHA 2023. This was a direct outcome of meetings with the Indonesian Health Minister during the APR conference in Bali in December 2022. My presentation on the development of primary care with family doctors had a prominent place on the agenda for the event and was well received.
In Spring 2023, WHO invited NSAs to apply for membership in a new body, the Civil Society Commission (CSO). The purpose of the CSO is to improve the collaboration between WHO and civil society agencies. WONCA has been accepted as a member of the commission, which held its first meeting in mid-December. As the WHO Liaison for 2024, I will follow the work of the commission and identify how our participation can support WONCA’s work with WHO.

OECD
OECD is currently launching the PARiS Survey, a global provider and receiver survey on chronic care. WONCA has been an associated member of the Advisory Board for the survey, and the CEO and I have covered both in-person and virtual meetings in 2023 together.

High-level Advocacy Activities
Advocacy takes place in different contexts, as well as in dialogue with politicians. Presence at WHO meetings and regional WONCA conferences and councils often entails meetings with national health authorities on different levels. Carrying the WONCA World flag can facilitate local dialogue.
This has also been a fact in my own home turf, as I have been invited to voice international perspectives on family medicine at a meeting with high-ranking national politicians organized by the Finnish Medical Association.
In July this year, WONCA co-hosted a high-level meeting on primary care in Washington, DC, with broad representation from the US Ministry of Health.
Accreditation
The accreditation program is in accordance with WONCA’s mission to support the development of family medicine globally and entails the accreditation of clinics and training programs.
Besides being a member of the Accreditation Committee, I had the opportunity to perform the second and final steps of the accreditations of six clinics and two training programs in China in April this year, spread over two locations. The actual accreditations already began in 2021 with the virtual visits; however, the process was disrupted by the pandemic, and the final steps were pending. The accreditation visits took place back to back with the annual conference of Cross Straits, one of WONCA’s Chinese member organizations, where I was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the opening of the meeting.
Family Doctor Day (FDD)
The activities related to FDD have increased in number and creativity. I wish to send a very special thanks to Communications Officer Maria Zavala for supporting WONCA and our member organizations in making WONCA visible on May 19.
Publications
As the WONCA president, I have co-authored several editorials and position papers.
Professionalizing WONCA
Strategic Plan
Leading a global network of the size and complexity of WONCA requires a plan to guide how to prioritize resources and assess what we have accomplished, as well as to adjust our course along the way.

One of WONCA’s primary objectives is to serve its members effectively.
The Strategic Plan 2023–2028 was developed based on input from the broader membership of WONCA. I thank all those who contributed to the development of the plan, and I am very grateful that the plan was well received by the Council and approved during the meeting in Sydney in October.
Membership Issues
One of WONCA’s primary objectives is to serve its members effectively. However, as our membership base expands, we are encountering an increasing number of challenges related to membership management. Notably, issues surrounding multiple member organizations and voting protocols often lead to confusion and tension. To address this, we proposed the formation of a dedicated task force that will investigate these challenges and offer actionable solutions to be discussed at the 2025 WONCA World Council meeting in Lisbon. The term of reference for the task force was approved by the Council in Sydney, and so was the candidacy of Francine Lemire from Canada to chair the task force. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Francine Lemire for taking on this task.
Accreditation Activities
There is a common understanding that part of WONCA’s mission is to support the development of training schemes, quality systems, and professional development in clinical practice. We have started to look at how we can develop WONCA`s consultancy services further to support the development of family medicine in many countries. At present, this is a work in progress.
The Core Values Project
Concerning the WONCA Roadmap of 2021 and the Strategic Plan we presented to the Council in Sydney, the definition and the core values and principles of our discipline are
key. The core values of family medicine have been a field of interest for me throughout my professional career.
In the present times of rapid societal changes in an uncertain world, we need to raise awareness of the importance of core values as the foundation of the discipline and identify a common denominator
for the specialty, which is applicable in different contexts.
This is the backdrop for the launch of the Global Core Values Project in March 2024. For this, a working group with regional representation was established and had its first in-person meeting in the form of a workshop in Sydney in October. The group will work for the WONCA Council and Conference in Lisbon in September 2025. More information regarding the background of the project can be found by following this link to the March 2023 Newsletter:
A big thank you to Felicity Goodyear-Smith of New Zealand and Johann Agust Sigurdsson of Iceland for joining me in the project lead group.

WONCA Sydney
The WONCA Council and Conference marked the end of the 2021–2023 term. It was the first time that the global WONCA community met in person in 5 years.
WONCA HQ and organizer RACGP had regular calls over the last six months leading up to the event in Sydney.
Together with the CEO and the Secretariat, I arrived in Sydney a week ahead of the proceedings, which included the executive meeting over two days, regional councils, Council for 2 ½ days, and, finally, the conference itself following a day of pre-conferences ahead of the main event.
It was a pleasure to chair the first full, hybrid Council meeting in WONCA’s history. I wish to extend my gratitude to Harris Lygidakis and the staff for their thorough preparations and seamless conduct of all technical operations.

I had the honor of delivering the keynote address of the main conference, which was titled “Healthcare in Uncertain Times,” where the Global Core Values Project was also introduced.
My thanks go out to the Australian hosts—Chair of the Host Organising Committee Karen Price, Chair of the Scientific Committee Mark Morgan, and the then CEO of RACGP Paul Wappett—for the wonderful collaboration and delivering a successful conference.
Chairing the Handover and Awards Ceremony together with CEO Harris Lygidakis at the end of the conference was both an emotional and lovely moment. It allowed me to extend my heartfelt gratitude to several people, including my husband and family. I know WONCA is in good hands with my successor, Karen Flegg, and I wish her the best of luck with her presidency.
Finally, to each and every member of the WONCA community: thank you for trusting me to lead WONCA. It has been a fantastic journey.
Strategic Plan

CEO Report
2023 has been a year of significant progress for WONCA, marked by strategic initiatives, organizational transformations, and enhanced global engagement. We’ve taken substantial steps in project development, funding, and donations, all aimed at fostering collaboration and creating meaningful outcomes that resonate globally. Through these endeavors, WONCA’s continues to leverage its extensive expertise and amplify its role in advancing family medicine globally.
Strategic Initiatives: Project Development and Collaborative Funding
2023 was marked by progress in project development and the strengthening of collaborative efforts. Our strategy has been centered on advancing various projects, aiming to generate concrete results that highlight the skills and knowledge within our community. This approach aligns with WONCA’s mission and actively contributes to its advancement. A significant milestone was the introduction of the WONCA Collaborative Fund. This crowdfunding mechanism is designed to stimulate innovation and promote cooperation among our groups. It acts as an incubator for nascent ideas, democratizing the funding process and empowering our Working Parties and Special Interest Groups. Significantly, the Fund is actively supporting two key projects: the Global Family Violence Initiative and the Digital Health Training for Family Doctors.
This fund is more than just financial support; it’s about building a sustainable ecosystem for innovation in family medicine. It covers a range of domains including capacity building, training, policy development, advocacy, and research. Parallel to this, our ongoing projects, like ‘MDD Minds’, have seen success across 10 countries, demonstrating our commitment to mental health and educational outreach.
Additionally, our dedicated efforts in grant scouting and providing support in grant application development are playing a crucial role in the sustainability and growth of our projects. We aim at securing essential funding that fuels our initiatives by actively identifying potential grant opportunities and assisting our teams in crafting compelling applications.
Organizational and Financial Milestones
The year 2023 has been a landmark one for WONCA, especially in terms of organizational restructuring and financial management. A key event was the completion of the liquidation process of the WONCA International (PTC) Inc., based in the British Virgin Islands, on 21 December 2023. This marked the termination of the WONCA Trust and the successful transfer of assets to the Swiss-based WONCA Association.
The transition to the Swiss-based non-profit WONCA Association, along with the establishment of our new branch in Belgium, represent the culmination of an extensive restructuring journey that began in 2020. These strategic changes have brought our operations into greater alignment with our core mission and values, laying a robust foundation for future growth and development. The successful restructuring, including the termination of the WONCA Trust, heralds a phase of revitalized strength and clearer strategic direction in our global healthcare initiatives.
Conference Highlights
The Sydney World Conference in 2023 was a highlight for WONCA, drawing over 4,400 participants. This event was a celebration of WONCA’s 50th Anniversary and a symbol of our community’s resilience and unity post-pandemic. The conference facilitated vibrant discussions and strengthened our global network.
The WONCA Europe Conference in Brussels was another significant event, showcasing the strength of our regional communities. Looking forward, we have an ambitious lineup of seven conferences in 2024, reflecting our commitment to a diverse and inclusive global family medicine community.
In 2023, WONCA strategically adopted the Core Professional Congress Organizer (Core PCO) model, a decision aimed at enhancing the management of our conferences. This model streamlines event planning, ensuring consistency, quality, and financial efficiency. The Core PCO’s role is integral, managing critical logistics and aligning each conference with WONCA’s long-term vision, thus elevating our events’ impact and relevance in the family medicine community.
Communications
In 2023, we intensified our focus on WONCA’s communications strategy, aiming to elevate our brand awareness and enhance audience engagement. Key initiatives include updating our branding guidelines, transitioning WONCA News to a more efficient platform, and effectively leveraging social media and email campaigns.
The refresh of the World Family Doctor Day branding this year, including the new logo, marks a significant step in WONCA’s efforts to stay relevant and vibrant in the evolving global healthcare environment. The update represents a comprehensive approach to our branding, encompassing a media toolkit designed to empower member organizations. This toolkit provides resources for local activities, making it easier for our Member Organizations to tailor their communications and engage effectively with their communities.
Enhancing Member Engagement with the Membership Portal
The introduction of the WONCA Membership Portal has marked a significant advancement in strengthening member engagement. This platform offers a dedicated space for our Working Parties and Special Interest Groups to access a wealth of resources, receive the latest updates, and explore collaborative opportunities. Currently serving a growing community of 3,500 members, the portal acts a centralized hub, facilitating communication and nurturing a stronger sense of community among our members, thereby enhancing the collaborative spirit that is essential to our mission.
Acknowledging Our Dedicated Secretariat Team
In reflecting on the past year, it is important to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our Secretariat team. Andrea Zard (Administration), Roberto Muñoz Sierra (Fundraising and Projects), and Maria Dolores Zavala (Communications) have been instrumental in driving WONCA’s initiatives forward. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Maria Dolores Zavala for her exceptional service and welcome Diarmuid Hayes as our new Communications Officer. Their contributions are invaluable to the success and smooth operation of WONCA.
World Family Doctor Day
In 2023, the World Family Doctor Day (WFDD) celebrated on May 19th, highlighted the crucial role of family doctors and primary care teams in healthcare worldwide. The theme, “Family doctors: The Heart of Healthcare,” underscored their significance in delivering personal, comprehensive, and continuous healthcare.
The campaign introduced new elements including a minimalist logo and a dedicated website, receiving positive feedback and high engagement. The WFDD Toolkit on Trello facilitated campaign participation with essential resources.

Activities worldwide showcased the impact of family doctors. In Africa, Nigeria and Liberia utilized media platforms for awareness, while Malaysia and Taiwan organized grand events and educational activities. China emphasized contracted services, and Hong Kong emphasized disease prevention. In the Philippines and Mongolia, outreach programs and health education events were conducted. New Zealand and Australia shared inspiring stories and messages supporting family doctors.
In Europe, Ukraine and Spain organized seminars and events recognizing family doctors’ contributions. Macedonia and Slovenia held conferences and press events advocating for improved primary healthcare. Portugal and Kyrgyzstan honored family doctors through various initiatives.
Latin American countries including Brazil, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela engaged in social media campaigns and events. Costa Rica hosted a congress, while Colombia, Cuba, and Ecuador organized activities to commemorate the day.
In North America, Canada and the United States participated through social media campaigns, interviews, and website banners, recognizing the efforts of family physicians.
In South Asia, Bangladesh, India, and Nepal organized medical camps, walkathons, and gatherings to highlight the importance of family doctors in delivering quality healthcare.
The Young Doctors’ Movements (YDM) played a significant role in the campaign, contributing through videos, social media engagement, and support across all regions.
WONCA emphasized continued support for family doctors globally, urging donations to ensure access to quality healthcare.
Overall, the 2023 campaign showcased the essential role of family doctors in healthcare and promoted their recognition and support worldwide.
MDD Minds Project
The MDD MINDS FOR PRIMARY CARE Program, addressing the critical need for enhanced care for major depressive disorders worldwide, aims to improve the quality of care for major depressive disorders by empowering family doctors in Africa-Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
To achieve this, the Program encompasses three key phases: a self-paced online course called “MDD Minds 101”, a more in-depth Train-the-Trainer course, and a performance in practice initiative.
This program has been developed by a diverse Master Faculty consisting of 12 WONCA mental health experts:
■ Abdullah al Khatami from Saudi Arabia
■ Adekunle Joseph Ariba from Nigeria
■ André Luís Bezerra Tavares from Brazil
■ Christ Dowrick from UK
■ Christos Lionis from Greece
■ Cindy Lam from Hong Kong
■ Darien Cipta from Indonesia
■ José Javier Mendoza Velásquez from Mexico
■ Joy Mugambi from Kenya
■ Ryuki Kassai from Japan
■ Sankha Randenikumara from Sri-Lanka
■ Yasmin Cordova Rios from Peru
In a second phase, participants who successfully complete “MDD Minds 101” will have the opportunity to enrol in a more in-depth Train the Trainer course. Additionally, selected participants will have the chance to develop in-practice quality improvement projects. This initiative is led by WONCA’s Working Party on Mental Health, implemented in collaboration with Mosaica Solutions and funded by an unrestricted grant from Pfizer*.
*An unrestricted grant is a form of funding provided to an organization without specific limitations or conditions imposed on its use. This means there are no restrictive guidelines or specific requirements dictating how the money should be spent, nor any influence on the content or outcome of the program. In this case, WONCA Association has the freedom to implement the program according to its principles and maintaining its autonomy.

WONCA has a small (4-5 persons) secretariat based led by the CEO in Brussels which I had the pleasure to visit in early 2024 and they are an amazing resource of many talentsto help deliver the goals of WONCA.
Our ambitions for WONCA will need a larger secretariat if we are to achieve our goals. Over the next year, we will look to increase our income streams in order to build theteamfurther.
I look forward to working with the Regional Treasurers and the finance committee over the next year to develop our systems to improve transparency and efficiency.
Best wishes Steve
Dr Steve Mowle MBE FRCGP Member at Large WONCA TreasurerWHO Liaison Report
Background:
These are challenging times as the United Nations and the WHO acknowledge we face stagnation in improving access to health services, increasing health inequities globally and delayed 2030 targets for the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) and Universal Health Care (UHC)1. It is a worrying time too as, to address the huge shortfall in health care workers (10 million by 2030), the WHO seeks solutions for widening primary health care (PHC) teams through different modes of delivery. This risks oversight of the crucial leadership of Family medicine (FM) doctors. Now, more than ever, WONCA must work effectively at the WHO table through clear delivery aims and targets.
WONCA aims 2022-23:

To share expertise and information to work collaboratively and strategically with WHO to:
1. Contribute effectively to show how primary care can address health inequities and achieve UHC.
2. Build sustainable regional collaborations to maintain impetus when leadership changes.
3. Harness expertise of Working Parties/ Special Interest Groups (SiGs) to provide technical support for WHO projects.
World Health Assembly (WHA) 2023:
The WONCA President, CEO, WHO liaison member and Communications officer represented WONCA World at the 76th WHA in Geneva in May 2023. Meetings were held to assess progress and widen networks. These included:
■ WHO Head Quarter Integrated Health Services, Clinical Services and Systems
■ Non Communicable Disease (NCD) directorate
■ The WHO healthcare workforce
■ World Federation of Public Health Associations
■ International Council of Nurses
■ International Federation of Medical Students’ Association
■ World Federation of Medical Education.
Summary of progress against our aims:
1. Contribute effectively:
1:1 Ensure that FM doctors’ leadership in primary care teams is visible to the WHO. Ongoing
The WHO focus, to address the large deficit in healthcare workers, is on training community healthcare workers. Making the crucial expertise and leadership offered by FM doctors remains of paramount importance. WHO have made it clear to us that memorandums and statements of intent are not enough- actions speak louder than words. We are targeting key areas for work which builds on the expertise of our working parties and special interest groups.
Action: Set achievable outcomes for work with WHO reporting progress regularly to Executive.
1:2 Establish within the WHO organisation where focal points for effective engagement lie: Achieved
We now have a committed link into WHO through John Fogarty Technical Officer WHO Head Quarter Integrated Health Services, Clinical Services and Systems who is engaging positively.
1:3 Active engagement: Ongoing Building on the WHA 2023 discussions we now have:
Supported WHO work on developing a global compendium of health care services to demonstrate how primary care services contribute-. A continuing action for 2024.

Agreed and disseminated a joint statement (link here) with the WHO NCD directorate: This was jointly announced with the WHO at the World Council in Sydney. It is now being progressed by developing concrete actions harnessing working party expertise.
Started to establish a strong “Global Forum” of organisations delivering PHC. The first step has been the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) ”and WONCA.
Commenced exploring the role WONCA can play in the newly established WHO Civil Society Commission.
1:4 Collaboration plan between WHO and WONCA for 2022-2024. Ongoing.
2023 review of the WONCA Collaboration Plan 2022-24 for the WHO Non-State Actor’s triennial review of official relations was challenging for several reasons. Many objectives were not SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). Working parties (WPs) ( often due to a change in chair) were unaware they were signed up to deliver objectives and regular review of progress by Executive was not in place. Some WP members with specific expertise were working with WHO as individuals and not under their WP WONCA “umbrella”- a missed opportunity for WONCA.
Action: Careful planning is now essential to deliver achievable targets for the 2024-26 plan.
2. Build sustainable regional and member organisation (MO) collaborations Ongoing
2:1 The CEO and President have worked hard to become well connected, respected and have established important networks. Our Communication Officer actively disseminates events and progress. Personal interactions work and need sustaining wherever possible. To build on this Anna Stadval, as Past President elect, is leading WONCA WHO liaison for 2024. She is supported by Pilar Astier Pena (Member at Large) to enable building relationships and continue work when Anna steps down in 2025.
Action: Continue to build relationships across WHO and regularly highlight and communicate WHO events and WONCA achievements .
2:2 Establishing communication links through Regional Presidents with WHO Regional offices to understand WHO in country activities is proving essential but challenging. WHO activities tend to be “in country” and we need to understand how to link and harness and identify where specific FM expertise exists across regions. This needs enhanced regional president focus on their WHO responsibilities.
Proposed Action: Work with the Regional Presidents to establish effective reporting to Executive and CEO on their work with the WHO Regional office and Member Organisation WHO activities
3. Harness expertise of Working Parties/ Special Interest Groups (SiGs)
3:1 Across our WONCA network there is significant WP, SiG and individual expertise linking directly into the WHO through collaboration and consultancies. Yet, we are failing to harness this effectively to join together to create the strong organisational voice necessary for advocate for FM leadership within PHC. Never has this been needed more urgently. WP and SiG annual reports yielded scant information, if any, of work for WHO and clear aims and objectives for doing so.
Proposed Action: Work with WPs and Sigs to establish effective reporting to Executive and CEO on their work with the WHO Regional office and Member Organisation WHO activities

Conclusion:
Over the past two year it has been challenging but successful inroads have been made in actively linking WONCA as an organisation with the WHO and gaining a better understanding of how to impact through active productive work rather than statements of intent. Across the regions, WPs, SiGs and members, there are opportunities to strengthen our work and these need to be harnessed. Val

SOUTH AFRICA WON BID FOR WONCA 2027 – this is very important to Africa region. The last time Africa hosted WONCA world conference was in Durban in South Africa in 2001. Its time for Africa to host the WONCA conference again. The MOs in Africa region were united in giving full support to this bid.
WHO AFRO
■ We have a collaborative relationship with WHO AFRO and MOU was signed in 2018.
■ WHO AFRO have invited WONCA Africa region to the Annual WHO AFRO Regional Committee for Africa in NSA Category since 2018.
■ We are equally invited to the 73rd WHO AFRO Regional Committee for Africa 28 August to 1st Sep 2023 at Garborone Botswana. 3 persons – Dr Dan Abubakar, Dr Innocent Besiygne and Dr Olusola Oluwaseun represented WONCA Africa region.
■ However, WHO AFRO do not carry us along in other activities and hardly responds to communication. We need more collaborations in areas of Primary Health Care PHC, Rural Health Research, training / re training and health care infrastructural development especially in the rural areas where about 70% of the people live.
WORLD BANK
■ We made contact with World Bank and they attended the 7th WONCA Abuja conference 24-26 November 2022; they presented a paper on Challenges of health care financing in Africa. It was delivered by Dr Olumide Okunola, Head of International Finance Corporation IFC Group world bank.
Dr Abra Tholsi Fransch died in Victoria Australia on the 21st September 2023 after a protracted and well fought battle with cancer. She was buried on the 29th September 2023 in Echuca, Victoria, Australia. She was a past president of wonca Africa region and was the first female president. May her soul rest in peace.
CHALLENGES IN THE REGION
1. Membership development – it has been very difficult to increase number of member organizations. No thanks to the general economic downturn of African countries. The members in the MOs are also not growing as expected in Africa.
2. Francophone challenge. No French speaking country have joined WONCA. Despite setting up 5 platforms for 5 French speaking countries, none have joined WONCA so far. They complain of lack of financial resources and also raised pertinent questions on benefit of WONCA to the MOs and members.
3. Loss of voting rights by MOs. Since 2021, multiple MOs in a country nominates one person to vote on behalf of the MOs in that country. MOs frown at this and may lead to loss of members and member organizations.
4. Fund transfer difficulties – many countries including developing countries like Africa faces a lot of difficulties transferring funds from Africa to WONCA.

We initiated a call for contributions to foster special collaborative studies. The response was overwhelming, as we garnered approximately 15 proposals from dedicated participants. After careful evaluation, we are delighted to unveil the two projects that have been selected for awards: • EURODATA Study, by semFYC with partners addresses workforce capacity building in family practice in Europe. • The project, Lessons Learned in Primary Care of Value to the Health Sector from the COVID-19 pandemic, by EQUIP with partners. Its’ aim is to publish a Position Paper that summarizes the wide range of topics in publications of the European PRICOV-19 Study. Both winning projects will be awarded a prize of 5,000 EUR each. In 2023, our approach to pursuing EU grants and projects underwent a refined selection process. This discerning strategy led us to become part of two consortia and secure grants for both endeavors. Through these achievements, our prominence and engagement in significant European undertakings were further amplified, reinforcing our position as advocates of family medicine. Notably, these projects delve into subjects integral to our mission, enhancing our contribution to matters of utmost importance. EARLY: The goal of the project is to improve youth mental health and contribute to reduction of MHCs in youth by reducing exposures in youth living in the community.
POINT:
The purposes of POINT are to build detailed knowledge on the link between the postacute phase (PAP) of COVID-19 and NCDs. And to identify robust biomarkers and build predictive tools that help early identification and management of risk of NCDs. Our collaborative efforts with diverse scientific organizations across Europe remained steadfast, yielding fruitful outcomes. A notable highlight among these endeavors was the workshop conducted in partnership with the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). This collaborative workshop culminated in the publication of a manuscript.

Activities 2023
he focus this biennium in WONCA North America has been on refining and preparing a new set of guidelines to provide the region with a more formal structure aimed at enhancing and strengthening WONCA in North America. Many of the North American region’s strong independent organizations returned to in-person meetings over this period, including the AAFP’s FMX, CFPC’s Family Medicine Forum, STFM’s Annual Spring Conference, and NAPCRG held it’s 50th annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The CCFP also held it’s annual Distinguished Lecture in an online format.
WONCA and global health in general have retained an active profile across the North American organizations. While the AAFP’s Global Health Summit is no longer held as an independent meeting, it has now been integrated into the beginning of FMX to try to increase exposure of the general membership to global health issues. In 2022 at CFPC’s Family Medicine Forum, the Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine had the pleasure of hosting international delegates from Indonesia, Madagascar, Argentina, Uganda, and Saudi Arabia. These international delegates had the opportunity to attend inspiring keynote sessions and access best evidence-based education sessions and networking opportunities, including a visit to a family health team in downtown Toronto, Ontario. The ABFM, the ABFM Foundation and the Center for Professionalism and Value in Health Care partnered with WONCA, PAHO, WHO, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), Ariadne Labs, and several philanthropies to hold an international conference on The Essential Role of Primary Health Care for Health Security..
The 2021 NASEM report, Implementing High-Quality Primary Care, has had a cascade effect across U.S. federal and state agencies in support of primary health care and the conference was designed to bring the US into the international primary health care (PHC) fold. WONCA President Anna Stavdal was featured and helped produce a conference paper together with Viviana Martinez-Bianchi about the Astana Declaration and international PHC agreements. The conference also allowed the regional Presidents of both North America and Iberoamericana-CIMF to meet with leadership at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to discuss opportunities for mutual cooperation and the eventual potential establishment of WONCA as a Non-State Actor, similar to its status with WONCA. Potential areas for collaboration included the establishment of Family Medicine as a specialty in geographies of the region where it does not yet exist, as well as support for quality control and improvement of training programs for frontline PHC workers.
The ABFM working with the National Academies Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education also led a global interprofessional preconference on Building the Workforce for Implementing High Quality Primary Care. Of note, ABFM and others in Family Medicine in the U.S. have been very involved in the redesign of post-graduate training, and starting this July 2023, perhaps the most significant changes in Family Medicine residency education in the U.S. since 1969 are now in place.
CFPC has also been engaged in a similar major national effort, both of which may be of interest to the broader global community. STFM has also recently undertaken development of new training programs on point-of-care ultrasound, as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
WHO Collaborations
We have worked together with leadership from IberoAmericana-CIMF on efforts to formalize a collaboration with PAHO, working particularly with Dr. James Fitzgerald, Dr. Ernesto Bascolo, Dr. Benjamin Puertas, and Ms. Colette Boughton.

Brief Description
The WONCA Working Party on Education will support high quality education, training, assessment and continuing professional development in general practice / family medicine for medical students, doctors in training, and established general practitioners and family doctors.
Activities 2023

The WONCA Working Party on Education (WWPE) had a busy couple years from 20212023. Throughout these past two years, we strengthened our governance structure. We ensured that we had a representative from all WONCA regions and reached out to the young doctors for representation. We now have staggered terms for our executive members such that not all of them will complete their terms at the same time ensuring institutional memory and continuity. We have monthly meetings that are consistently attended by most of the executive members. Many of them have been helpful leading specific portfolios and are also working on the Undergraduate medical education textbook due to be launched next year at the WONCA World conference in Sydney. I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate Drs. Marie Andrades and Nagwa Nashat who have been appointed the honorary treasurer and chair-elect of the WWPE. They will be in these positions from 2023-2025.
As COVID pandemic evolved into allowing in person events, the WWPE has been active at giving presentations. In the summer of 2022, WWPE member leaders (Victor Ng, Marie Andrades, Val Wass) attended the WONCA Europe conference in London. We held a WWPE meeting which was well attended. We explored issues faced by educators in Europe and beyond and provided insight on how WONCA and the working party can
assist. The WWPE also had representation at the Primafammed conference in Malawi where we were offered a keynote and workshop. Professor Akye Essuman, our African regional executive members presented this on our behalf, and I was able to submit a video submission to participate. At the WONCA Africa conference, Dr. Bola Fatusin, our young doctor’s representative represented the WWPE and presented on some of the work and activities of the working party. Her presentation generated significant interest at the conference with many members signing up to the WWPE shortly after. Finally at the recent WONCA Asia Pacific conference, I presented a plenary discussing the importance of building health systems through family medicine education. We also held a working party meeting in conjunction with the Indonesian Society of Family Medicine Teachers. The WWPE was also active in 2023 WONCA Europe conference in Brussels where we presented the draft standards for the WONCA Global postgraduate standards. These were well received by the audience, and we look forward to further refining them and ultimately incorporating them into the revised postgraduate standards.
The Working Party has been involved with several consultancies. We recently participated in the accreditation visit with UMP GOLD program in Guangzhou/Hong Kong. A report has been submitted to the accreditation committee. We have also been asked to review continuing professional development material for accreditation. The chair of the WWPE participates on the WONCA accreditation committee and as a group, we are keen to improve the accreditation process and provide a quality improvement service to our partners. In 2023, the WONCA accreditation committee was sunsetted and a new quality improvement process is being developed by the WONCA executive. We look forward to working with the WONCA leadership on this new important initiative.
We are also engaged with the WONCA Secretariat to start working on the portal. Our WWPE executive members, Drs Nagwa Nashat and Brunee Dorset have been very involved with setting up the portal and helping to work with the secretariat to set up a marketing and scaling plan. Hopefully by next year, most of our members will be on the portal and using it and offer a more streamline way for us to communicate, information share and collaborate.
Collaborations with WP/SIGs and others
The WWPE have collaborated with groups such as the Working Party on Quality and Safety and have a joint workshop prepared for WONCA World in Sydney. The workshop focuses on how we can promote patient safety in practice and how to best embed those teachings in the curriculum. Additionally, we are working with the special interest group on emergency medicine to prepare workshops for upcoming conferences. Collaborated with Working Party on Mental health when asked by the WHO to describe how family doctors work in the field of mental health. We are also active in collaborations young doctor movements with two young doctors on the WWPE executive.
WHO Collaboration
We would like to collaborate with the WHO - particularly with regards to the new WHO academy but have not had the opportunity.
We have been in contact with the WHO regarding preparing education related to mental health. I had an interview in 2022 related to mental health education for family doctors. I advocated the important role that family doctors play in providing mental health care to their communities and in particular, communities that do not have access to psychiatrists or psychologist. Additionally, the family doctor’s ability to provide continuing care and understand the family and personal dynamics make them an ideal provider to care for mental health and concurrent conditions. We have since been invited to a workshop hosted by the WHO and Chris Dowrick from the working party on mental health will be attending. I look forward to further collaborations with the WHO in this area and other work that is underway at their academy.
Plan for 2024
We have 3 main priorities for 2023 and beyond.
1. Promote the WONCA undergraduate medical education textbook - encourage uptake and readership.
2. Collaborate with WONCA leadership on the new quality improvement initiative and revise the postgraduate education standards accordingly.
3. Continue to collaborate with WONCA working parties and special interest groupspresenting at regional and world conferences.

WP/SIG Executive Board
Chair: Ana Luisa Neves Deputy Chair: Liliana Laranjo Past Chair: Pramendra Prasad Young Doctor Liaison: Pablo Ramirez Members of the executive: · Karen Kinder · Keith A Thompson · Nick Guldemond · Raquel Gómez Bravo · Steven Van de Vijver
Brief Description
Our mission is to promote thought leadership, knowledge exchange, and international collaboration to advance the science and implementation of digital health in primary care, with a focus on digital literacy, medical education &capacity building.
Activities 2023
From an organizational perspective, we have conducted election for a new Chair and Executive Committee in 2023, and selected a Young Doctor Representative (Dr Pablo Ramirez). Our webpage was updated accordingly. In 2023, our Working Party on eHealth collaborated on the organization of CME activities and webinars in collaboration with a variety of WPs. Dr Nick Guldemond was a speaker of the Young Doctors Webinar on Digital Health. Dr Pramendra Prasad Gupta was invited as a Guest speaker during the
WONCA East Mediterranean Conference in Oman where he delivered a talk on AI in Primary Care. WONCA has entered in a collaboration agreement with MIMS — an education provider based in Singapore/Hong Kong, with the aim of developing a series of webinars targeting the South Asia / Asia Pacific region. The Working Party on eHealth was invited for a webinar in which Dr Pramendra Prasad Gupta and Dr Ana Luisa Neves acted as speakers alongside other experts from the Asia Pacific region. The topics of the presentations were, respectively, ‘Telemedicine and Telehealth: Role in improving primary healthcare” and “Towards a safer and better version of digitally-enabled primary care”. Our Working Party on eHealth also participated in the WONCA Europe Conference 2023 in Belgium, where we organized the workshop ‘’Best Practices in using Digital Health in Vulnerable Populations’’. Following on work started in 2021, we developed a Lexicon to synchronize semantics moving forward and ensure everyone understands what is meant by various terminologies in use. A Resource Repository was also established to create a place someone could reach out to regarding various digital health themes. At the WONCA World Conference in Sydney the eHealth Working Party organised the workshop “Spectrum of Digital Health in Primary Healthcare: now, next, and beyond”, which involved a 10-min presentation by Liliana Laranjo followed by a group discussion with 25 attendees.
Collaborations with WP/SIGs and others
We have submitted a project to the WONCA Collaborative Fund, aiming to evaluate the needs for digital health training in Family Medicine curricula, in collaboration with the WP Research and SIG Policy Advocacy. This project was one of the two selected for a global crowdfunding campaign led by WONCA World. Additional collaborations with other WP/SIGs in the context of external communications are also described in detail in the previous section.
WHO Collaboration
In March 2023, WHO SEARO invited Dr Pramendra Prasad Gupta to contribute to the workshop on ‘Strengthening Telemedicine in SEARO Region’. Our Collaboration with WHO started in early 2022. We met on two occasions with the WHO team (Surabhi Joshi and Derrick Muneene). A presentation to WONCA Ehealth WG and WHO Lead Surabhi Joshi was made December 02-2022, by Ms Kit August from IEEE SA. The topic was knowledge gaps on medical device literacy, focusing on BP (Blood Pressure) measurement devices and proper BP measurement techniques in the field.
Our discussions in the joint session held could be continued in future around the topics each WHO member presented as potential areas of collaboration.
Plan for 2024
From a network perspective, we will co-design our new vision and mission with our wider membership, starting with a Strategy Development Workshop that will take place in January 2023, with all our members. We will actively invite the involvement of current members, and make further efforts to encourage the recruitment of new ones. Regarding
specific projects, we aim to evaluate current needs for digital health training in General Practice/Family Medicine, as submitted to the WONCA Collaborative Fund. We will leverage our contact networks and the wider WONCA infrastructure to raise awareness and create a network of global changemakers on this topic, ultimately aiming to produce recommendations to influence undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. We also anticipate developing a research paper focusing on reconciling the McWhinney principles in the digital realm. We will regularly present our activities at international conferences, aiming to maintain a regular presence at WONCA conferences as active presenters, as well as in other network at regional levels. From an educational perspective, we aim to develop a strategy to identify key topics on digital health, relevant to a Primary Care audience, and develop regular webinars to our members and a wider audience. Finally, we anticipate the publication of a book on Digital Health in Primary Care, as part of the WONCA Series development of which will start in 2024.

Brief Description
WONCA Working Party on Research (WP-R) strives to achieve objectives that are consistent with WONCA’s principle of encouraging and supporting the development of academic organisations of general practitioners/family doctors. The main mission of the WP-R is to promote, support and conduct high-quality research in Family Medicine/ primary care.
Activities 2023

WONCA Family Medicine Series book Anxiety and Depression in Primary Care: International Perspectives: As WWPR we have published several research related WONCA endorsed books in the pasts. Now our past chair Felicity Goodyear-smith and our member Sherina Mohd-Sidik edited a new WONCA-endorsed book: Anxiety and Depression in Primary Care. There are several members of our WP who have contributed to this book as chapter authors, including executive and council members namely, Mehmet Akman, Mehmet Ungan, Nagwa Nashat, Bob Mash, Christos Lionis and Amanda Howe. The book will be included in the CRC press WONCA family medicine series and will be
on the market soon. The book is announced in the link below: https://www.routledge. com/Anxiety-and-Depression-in-Primary- Care-International-Perspectives/GoodyearSmith-Mohd-Sidik/p/book/9781032479514 Workshops The following workshop has been realised in WONCA Europe 2023, Brussels Post-COVID-19 integration of public health and primary care: Country experiences and research gaps. Presenters Mehmet Akman, Felicity Goodyear Smith, Jose M Valderas, Peter Decat and Peter Torzsa. This joint workshop with EGPRN contributed to strengthening the link between the global WP and the regional network of the same theme: primary care research. This positive experience convinced us to work together in future events as well. The following workshop has been submitted for WONCA World, Oct 2023 in Sydney How to write and how to publish: presenters: Mehmet Akman, Felicity Goodyear Smith and Karen Flegg. This is a traditional WS run by our WP, targeting especially early and mid-career researchers. We work on real examples of scientific abstracts, underlining common mistakes and providing hints for writing. On the other hand, how to publish part is developed from the editors’ perspective, making it clear what is in editors’ minds and how to avoid being rejected by generic mistakes. Also, we are giving a perspective for selecting the best journal for a specific article. The WS mentioned above is specifically submitted as our WP’s WS, however, our members will be running several additional WSs, some of which are endorsed by our WP. Webinars We continued our webinar series this year as well with a great success. Zoom participation was more than 50 mostly and additional participation of more than a hundred from the docquity platform. Below is the synopsis for these webinar series: With our member Sairat Noknoy’s proposal on behalf of Thai Royal College of Family Physicians, we (Felicity, Sairat and myself) started to explore possibility of a webinar series on different aspects of primary care on a country-comparative basis. We agreed on the following activities: 1. A webinar organized every two months, with 10-minute presentations from four different countries on a snapshot of the nature of family medicine and primary health care in their country, using the template for PowerPoint presentation slides.
The webinar series is planned to take place over 1 the year 2022 to 2023. 3. Each webinar will present a case, and the presenter will describe how much involvement family medicine / primary care has in managing such a case. The three sub-themes are:
■ Core functions of primary care (comprehensiveness, coordination, continuity, access)
■ Core values of primary care .practice transformation
Collaborations with WP/SIGs and others

WWPR has been actively involved in both selected proposals for the collaborative WONCA fund. With these two proıposals, we collaborated with several other WPs and SIGs.
WHO Collaboration
Mehmet Akman, chair, has been a consultant for WHO AZE since 2019 and he has contributed to AZE activities for the Astana conference of PHC in 2023. Also WP-R had
collaborated with WONCA liaison person (Maria Pillar) for WHO, both for Adtan event and other issues.
Plan for 2024
Main areas we work on are: · Primary care research priorities and funding, · Research priorities and capacity building for young doctors, · Mentorship program · Workshop planning about publication processes (journal rules, issues or study types preferred by journals, etc) via invitations of editors · Research, capacity building, and policy document creation, Following that, we initially planned to realise the following activities:: § WWPR Portal: improving its usability, implementing effective promotional strategies, and ultimately transforming it into a highly efficient communication platform. § International research collaborations: to secure funding and cultivate connections with developed and developing countries by planning a multicenter research project. The absence of a cohesive group working collaboratively is a current challenge. § New webinar planning: Additional webinars on different topics, following the same format and approach that proved successful in the previous sessions in 2023. § Dedicated slot in conferences: Adopting a continuous approach to foster sustained collaboration with various regional networks and groups, especially addressing the needs of young doctors in each conference, implementing mentorship programs within a co-working research seniors group, and allocating dedicated slots for presenting their research. § Mentorship program: Establish this initiative as an annual tradition, aiming for sustained engagement and improving the research capacity of WONCA members, especially those coming from low-resource settings. § Online cources: Introduction of an online course accessible through the portal. he course would consist of specific modules covering various topics, including introduction, research design, and methodology. § New book projects:’ Future Perspectives of Primary Care Research,’ deep diving into qualitative research, implementation research, and other topics closely aligned with primary care which are recently used and becoming more frequently practised in primary care research.. Furthermore, alternative book concepts are being discussed, such as ‘Innovation and Primary Health Care: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice.’

Special Interest Group on Family Violence

Brief Description
WP/SIG Executive Board
We have a Steering Committee, composed by the following members: Sajaratulnisah Othman (Co-Chair) Raquel Gomez Bravo (Co-Chair) Nena Kopcavar (Past Co-Chair) Jennifer Neil (Secretary) Hagit Dascal- Weichhendler (Past Co-Chair) Kelsey Hegarty (Past Co-Chair) Leo Pas (Past Co-Chair) Nina Monteiro Carmen Fernandez Alonso Joyce Kenkre Jinan Usta Omneya Ezzart El Sharif Elena Klusova (Networks Liaison) Eliana Vesga (YDM representative member)
Our SIG focuses on addressing family violence (FV), a global issue affecting health and well-being of countless individuals. We promote evidence-based PHC and prevention, effective interdisciplinary care, and policy development in the area of FV, providing vital support to family doctors in their practices and shaping policies.
Activities 2023
Our operational framework revolves around five core strategies: Connect, Resource & Support, Educate, Communicate, and Evaluate. CONNECT: The global surge in FV during the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the significance of our connections. SIG members have proactively fostered relationships, exchanging vital information, innovative ideas, and valuable resources throughout and beyond the pandemic. This spirit of collaboration is exemplified by the IMOCAFV project, which involves representatives from twenty-four countries spanning several continents and the FaV project.
Despite transitioning to virtual platforms, we remain committed to maintaining connections and forging partnerships with various WONCA Working Parties, SIGs, networks, WHO, and the European Parliament. RESOURCE AND SUPPORT: SIGFV members are actively advocating for the integration of FV and gender violence (GV) agenda, guidelines, and training materials within their respective national Colleges and healthcare institutions. This aligns with the Call to Action Statement of Recommendations on FV. To raise awareness and provide educational resources, we consistently publish national and international materials, including journal articles and book chapters. In response to the alarming increase in FV during the pandemic, we have posted a comprehensive summary with valuable information and links on the WONCA site. We are also working diligently to make the best practices for PHC on FV and other outputs of the IMOCAFV project available online for widespread use. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive framework for FV consultancy work, offering education, training, policy development, and research, accessible through face-to-face interactions, online channels, and secondary consultation. EDUCATE: We are dedicated to educating our members and the broader medical community. To achieve this, our SIG remained active with a variety

of activities. These included workshops, oral and poster presentations, and keynote speeches throughout the year. As example, we have conducted webinars and actively participated in conferences. Dr. Kopcavar represented the SIG in a WONCA Webinar on Elder Abuse, and several members have presented at various conferences. Furthermore, we also continued to publish research findings in high-impact journals. We presented workshops in WONCA Europe Brussels in June 2023, and held 3 workshops during WONCA World Sydney in October 2023 plus organizing a Preconference. At both national and international levels, several research projects on FV are currently in progress, with more detailed information available upon request (the FaV project and the IMOCAFV project, this last has also been prominently showcased at EGPRN conferences. COMMUNICATE: Our engagement with SIG members remains robust through regular online newsletters and an active Google group. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and after, our routine meetings continue.
Our executive team has been actively involved in WONCA meetings dedicated to enhancing our communication strategies. EVALUATE: Numerous SIG members are engaged in research projects and publications at both national and international levels. The SIG is at the forefront of leading the IMOCAFV PROJECT (‘Implementation Of Primary Care for Family Violence’) in collaboration with various organizations and the FaV project.
Collaborations with WP/SIGs and others
Our WP/SIG has engaged in fruitful collaborations, including: - Submission of the FaV project in collaboration with several WP and SIGs. - Research initiatives in collaboration with several WP and SIGs. • Collaboration with the WWPWFM, WONCA Working Party on Rural Practice (WRP), the Young Doctors’ Movement (YDM), and the WONCA SIG on Ageing and Health. • Collaborations with the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and the European Federation of Junior Doctors (EFJCA). • Participation in the Women in Global Health (WGH) #HealthToo campaign.
WHO Collaboration

Our WP/SIG has actively engaged with the World Health Organization (WHO) in various ways: Participation in the CSO Virtual Town Hall with the WHO Director-General, discussing the crucial role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in preventing, detecting, and responding to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. Ongoing collaboration with WHO involves facilitating the distribution of key materials, such as the Clinical

Handbook, to regional organizations, ensuring that essential resources are readily available for healthcare professionals worldwide.
OTHERS: Inclusion of Young Doctors: We are committed to engaging young doctors by extending invitations to participate in our workshops, webinars, research projects, and even our executive team. Eliana Vesga, who recently joined us this year, is actively involved. The representation and active participation of young doctors have consistently been a top priority for us.
Gender Equity: While acknowledging the significant prevalence of gender-based violence, our efforts in violence prevention are inclusive of all affected individuals, transcending the focus solely on women and girls. We are steadfast in our dedication to promoting gender equity, emphasizing the active inclusion of people across all gender identities. Our approach prioritizes equity, extending invitations to our male colleagues and organizing activities accessible to everyone. It is also notable that our group primarily consists of women, yet it’s important to recognize that our initial convenor was a male, Dr. Leo Pas.
Plan for 2024
CONNECT 1. Focus on improving regional connections and representation 2. Continue and increase Young Doctor connections across the regions 3. Continue connecting and collaborating with WPs and SIGs Activities: Through conferences and meetings in the different regions seek connections and broader representation as members of the SIG Contact the different Young Doctor groups and seek nominations of doctors to join as active members of the SIG An understanding of how best to exchange resources and connect with the young doctors in the family violence area Regular contacts –maintain and increase RESOURCE 4. European Young Family Doctors Movement (EYFDM)

We changed our name from the Vasco da Gama Movement to the European Young Family Doctors Movement in 2022 and at the beginning of 2023 we adopted a new logo. We feel it reflects the values of energy, connection and opportunities that are so important to us and our members. We have also moved to a new website, and we have established ourselves as an independent legal entity registered in the Netherlands.
Change within the EYFDM Executive
Stuart Holmes (UK) formally took over from Nicholas Mamo (Malta) as president at WONCA Europe in June and other new members of the Executive included Marika Svatošová (Czechia) as treasurer, Yanica Vella (Malta) as exchange officer and Carolina Cordovil (Portugal) as image officer. Other members of the executive remained in post. Rabee Kazan (Spain) was appointed as the project lead for WONCA’s FM360 exchange project at the global level. Raisa Álvarez Paniagua (Spain) will take over from him as the European coordinator for FM 360.
EYFDM pre-conference 2023

We were hosted by the young family doctors of Belgium for our annual EYFDM pre-conference in June, which was so popular that tickets sold out! Many of our members are at a stage in their lives when we are starting families of our own, and this was our first pre-conference which was officially ‘family friendly,’ so new parents could bring their children and remain involved in the EYFDM community.

Impact on WONCA Europe in 2023
EYFDM made a large impact on the WONCA Europe conference 2023 - young doctors were approximately one third of total attendees we made significant contributions to the scientific programme. EYFDM was given a session in the main hall, which we used to share our reflections on some of the challenges facing family medicine in 2023 but also where we see hope for the future. This session was recorded and you can watch it here. EYFDM also worked with the organising committee of Brussels 2023 to make the main conference family friendly, which was a great success!

We also collaborated with the organising committee of the WONCA Europe conference in Brussels to award 15 bursaries to enable EYFDM members from less privileged countries to attend and participate in the conference - particular mention must go to Marta Kurdzielewicz (EYFDM awards and fundraising officer) for her work on this project. We also ran a fundraising lottery in Brussels where we raised nearly 4,000 euros for our bursary fund for future conferences!
Contributions to WONCA World
We worked with young doctor colleagues from around the world to help produce WONCA’s video to celebrate World Family Doctor Day in May, and we collaborated with WONCA World’s Emergency Medicine SIG to present an educational webinar for young doctors around in September.
Exchanges within Europe
In 2023, EYFDM members hosted peers from other European countries for pre-conference exchanges in Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Bosnia & Herzegovina, the UK and France. Eleven bilateral exchanges between individual EYFDM members also took place throughout 2023.

Waynakay
The Board of Directors of Waynakay Latin America for the term 2022-2023 was composed of the following individuals:
Mesoamerica Subregion: Alejandro Saldaña (Mexico)
Andean Subregion: Julliana Sandoval (Peru)
Southern Cone Subregion: Gabriela Di Croce (Argentina)
In the elections during the assembly for residents, young families and community doctors held virtually alongside the Ibero-American Congress in Brazil, two out of the three representatives mentioned above were ratified.
In the last two years, the youth movement underwent two very different phases. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the movement’s immediate focus was on recovering spaces that had been weakened due to the suspension of in-person activities caused by the pandemic. In the second phase, with more energy and greater participation, work was reorganized and directed towards renewing, strengthening, and developing local movements and the regional space.

Thus, strategies were developed within each subregion to attract the new generation and sustain the participation of young people in each country. One such strategy was to convene through academic meetings. A survey was conducted to understand the members’ interest towards training topics, which led to the organization of a series of virtual meetings every two months, jointly conducted by two countries in the region, following the webinar model that YDM Global implemented in 2021. Each pair and topic to be developed were drawn live and approved by the Board of Directors.
Two significant events strongly encouraged participation, and these were linked to the two Ibero-American events of 2022 and 2023: the Summit in Guatemala and the unfortunately cancelled Ibero-American Congress.
In the months leading up to and during the organization of both events, the residents and young people from all subregions expressed significant interest in attending the events, which shows how important in-person meetings are and that they should be conducted whenever possible.
Following the cancellation of the Ibero-American congress, the movement sought to organize a regional in-person event to facilitate the meeting of members and representatives of national movements. The event coincided with an important visit from Sankha Randenikumara, the representative of young people in the Executive of WONCA. To make
this event possible, the SOCMEF, CIMF, and WONCA showed immense collaboration. The event took place last September in Cali, Colombia. During the event, in line with the Family Medicine Symposium of the Pacific Chapter of the Colombian Society, the day and assembly of residents and young people took place, including the election of the new Waynakay Board.

Within the Executive Committee of WONCA Ibero-American CIMF, participation was consistent, ensuring the representation of the voice of the youth in all discussions and tasks. Youth participation was present in all working committees that emerged from the summit, the follow-up of the implementation of family medicine in Guatemala, and the internship and scientific committees of the Ibero-American Congress. The call for participation in these activities sparked the interest of many young people in countries where the movement does not yet exist.

Concerning Waynakay’s youth and their connection with other regions of WONCA, some noteworthy milestones were achieved, such as the participation of representatives from Latin America in the YDM webinars and the inclusion of young people in the coordination of working groups of WONCA, with many of the selected individuals belonging to our region.
Finally, we are pleased to report that the WONCA FM360 program was reactivated recently. The program promotes exchange and internships between residents and young people from around the world. Our region has a team of representatives from seven countries in the exchange area, currently coordinated by Dr Liliana Villegas from Colombia, the regional representative of the program.
Some achievements that this management supported in the last biennium are described below:
■ Full incorporation of young people in the Executive and Board of WONCA IberoAmerican CIMF, giving them a voice and vote
■ Maintenance of simultaneous translation into Spanish at YDM virtual events
■ Participation in organizing committees for the Ibero-American events of CIMF
■ Call for providing economic assistance scholarships for young people to facilitate access to regional academic events
■ Establishment of a process for the election of the youth representative for the Executive of WONCA Ibero-America CIMF.
Waynakay in numbers:
■ Member countries of Waynakay Latin America, with established and ratified leadership: 9 (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic)
■ Countries with movement in the process of formation/restoration: 2 (Brazil, Bolivia).
■ Countries in the region with an interest in participating, having established contact with the Waynakay Board: 3 (Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico)

■ Currently active thematic committees: 2 (Exchanges and communication and dissemination)
■ There is no data on internships to date due to the recent reactivation of the WONCA program.
