It is the common theme underpinning business training and governments are attempting to upskill everyone's digital abilities. We are not machines, however, and in this issue, I think we have a beautiful balance of heart and inspiration.

I am a migrant child.

In 1961 my parents migrated to Australia as ‘10pound poms’, I was 2 years of age. It took us six weeks to arrive in Sydney from England. We immediately went to a hostel and ended up in another hostel in Burwood, where we stayed for 3 years.

I am now a 62-year-old woman who has a loving family, three adult children and three beautiful grandchildren. But I have not always felt the love of my family.

It is one of my earliest memories – the wind blowing in my hair; why do I hate that so much. I have always said to my husband “close that window, it is blowing my hair”. Neither of us knew the implications that that one day would have.

As a child I used to look into the mirror and cry, saying “I wish I could die”, “I hate myself”, “I hate being a child”, “when can I grow up?”.

Then there were the nightmares: something in the dark was coming to get me… what was it? Was it the ships coming to get me in the night? Was it a lion? What was it that I was frightened of?

As 3-year-old girls, Karen and I used to play together a lot of the time as Karen lived near me at the hostel. We started pre-school together and as happens often in families, my dad dropped us off at pre-school in the morning and Karen’s dad

Look around your home, your office or workspace and you may be surprised at how much paper you have just laying around. Whether it’s organised in folders, sorted into piles or a crazy mess there is often no need for it to be there at all.

Going paperless doesn’t necessarily mean having no paper in your life at all. I still always have a notebook on me, there are certain documents that you are required to have physical copies of and there may be very logical reasons for keeping some paper items. The important thing is to either get rid of or digitise all the other paper in your life to reduce the clutter and then stay on top of it, so it doesn’t take over again.

Step one: Get App-y Find a range of apps that can supplement or replace the paper in your life. I would recommend the following at a minimum:

I sought physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support to recover from the extreme stress and loss. What I discovered was that sharing gratitude, focusing on positivity, hearing inspiring stories, being connected and spending time with like-minded people helped me to move forward.

From this learning I wanted to create an events series that would bring people together – to share inspiring stories of local people. My ideal CWW guest is someone who has faced difficulties and challenges, who now have wisdom to share about their experiences, and who motivates and inspires others through their story.

To date we have interviewed 58 Canberrans across 25 events. At our launch event, Canberra media described CWW as ‘Oprah’like.

The Canberra market for events became inundated in 2018, then COVID changed the event space further. Even with the events space changing, I still know of many inspiring stories to share. I’m deeply honoured to be able to share these stories with you in Brave.

Technology is a treasure. It helps us save so much time. Or does it?

If you found yourself running out of fingers when counting, your technology use has crept beyond the boundaries of your work hours and you might be suffering an imbalance.

We all do it.

Think about how quickly we blame our teenagers for what we consider excessive use of their screens. But are we using ‘work’ as an excuse to be on ours all the time as well?

BUSINESS Technology has become so embedded in our daily lives and so accessible, we can’t put it down. The allure and ease of being connected can make us feel like we don’t ever get a break. Despite technology’s ability to draw us together, it can drain and disconnect us from our homes, families, communities and sense of self.

The ease of things can make them insidious. (I think of shopping with credit cards - they can make life easy at the moment but can easily become a slippery slope if overused or relied on.)

We need to be alert and aware of our tech and work habits asking ourselves – ‘Is what I’m doing now healthy?

Is this making my life, relationships and work better?

Or, am I too connected and unable to get a break from work?

Is this beginning to feel excessive or harmful?’

We need to ask these questions regularly, daily, sometimes moment by moment.

If you’ve identified that your boundaries around technology might be too soft (or non-existent), practice paying attention to how you feel when you’re working. Notice if you’re feeling tired or like you never get a break. If you start to feel resentful towards your clients, customers or interruptions throughout the day.

If your ‘never-ending workload’ sends you into overwhelm, check-in and ask, when was the last time I had a full day (or two) where I didn’t check my emails, quickly do some banking or answer a work-related call. If it was more than a week ago, it’s time to schedule one.

We all need downtime and a mini detox from our digital world can bring as many benefits as being constantly connected.

Let’s use our tools to serve our work and keep clean boundaries around our time so our relationships, family and community can continue to flourish.

Posting on social media can be a minefield. What works one day no longer does the next. However, there are a few tips to make it an effective tool to benefit your business.

The first step in any form of media is to check your energy before you start to type. What you type is an extension of your thoughts and behaviours.

Don't post when you feel angry or negative.

Simple.

Negative posting and giving unwanted opinions serves no one and is a waste of time. I encourage you to use the delete button, particularly in messenger. No one needs to be caught up in disagreements online that serve no purpose.

Groups (especially on Facebook) are an awesome place to forge friendships and build your tribe.

Here are a few tips to help establish and grow your group:

I started posting regularly, but I was nervous and concerned about being judged. I eventually convinced myself I was wasting time and not reaching enough people to make it worth it. That was until I ran into an old high school friend in my local Bunnings.

She seemed so happy to see me. We caught up and I found that life wasn’t ‘so good for her. She then went on to say that my FB posts were her lifeline on those very dark days. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think anyone was even seeing them. It was amazing to hear that she was reading them and that they helped her.

One of the most surprising lessons from COVID has been our need to adapt. While personally, we changed our homes into schools and offices, businesses also transformed, some looking very different than they did before the pandemic hit.

The future for our children in the workplace is looking tougher. If the top ten skills needed across all industries include communication, negotiation, critical thinking, decision making and continuous learning, we are already failing them.

According to Peter Goss, from the Grattan Institute, one-third of students entering Year 7 “might still be in that learning to read stage yet are expected to start covering more and more content”.

There is a sober reality to those figures. Some 510% of the population alone have dyslexia, in addition to other neurodiverse conditions such as ASD and attention issues. Learning is also language-based, and our children’s brains are not being wired for language like they used to be. The prospect for many of our children to successfully navigate their careers without the ability to communicate well and continuously learn, therefore, is at best, uncertain.

The irony of improving learning on a digital platform isn’t lost. It is, however, the perfect medium to find the learner’s weaknesses in memory, attention and communication skills plus provide the repetition required to build stronger pathways in these areas.

The ability to adapt and survive is reliant upon the individual’s ability to pay attention, remember and process auditory information for effective communication. This is something we need to remember as we adjust to the post COVID world or adapt to what else may come in the future.

We need to prioritise helping our children to learn better and to address our own learning challenges in order to manage potential future changes. Now that brain research provides a digital platform to improve the ability to learn is significant for anyone who wishes to adapt and thrive in a post COVID world.

After I had my babies, I was told to do my pelvic floor exercises. The problem was that every time I did the exercises I wanted to vomit! Yes, weird. Eventually, I just thought that it wasn’t something that would affect me.

Like many mothers, I focused on raising my children. There was no time, energy, or resources for me, everything became about the children. Does this sound familiar?

I didn't worry about it until the bottom fell out of my world, literally, twenty years later.

The doctor and obstetrician were considering surgery as I had a prolapse. I decided that no one was going near me with a knife and made it my mission to understand my pelvic floor and develop a relationship with it and I did.

I used to dread visiting shopping malls as the toilets were always so busy and far away and one time, I didn't make it! This was such an embarrassing experience.

My confidence and self-esteem dissolved and I was too self-conscious, embarrassed and ashamed to seek help. I thought that this was my lot in life, and I would just have to live with it.

Your pelvic floor is like a hammock that holds up the bottom of your world. It’s a muscle lying between your pubic bone and your coccyx designed to support all your internal organs. It is also the strength that is designed to support your anus and elimination, vagina, and urethra where you pass urine. This muscle plays an important role in our quality of life. As we age it stretches from giving birth or just from gravity and loses elasticity. It becomes weak, but it is a muscle and muscles can be strengthened.

I finally decided enough was enough and made some changes. I did my personal training qualification, lost ten kilograms and people commented that I looked confident, happy, full of energy. What they didn't know, was that I had strengthened my pelvic floor.

Now I can confidently run, jump on a trampoline and play with my grandchildren. Oh and visit the mall!

I am telling you this as I want you to understand the importance of this muscle that we have taken for granted all our lives.
