March is Birthday Time!

Happy spring, everyone! We survived another winter in Omaha. Yippee! As of this writing, it has really been a pretty mild winter. A couple of REALLY cold snaps, not very much snow…not too bad. Let’s hope it holds.

This time of year, a lot of us feel like caged animals. We want to get outside and start digging in the dirt. Today, I went to lunch with Roxy, my operations manager. The gal who seated us told us that, every year, she buys flowers twice. The first set, she plants early. The second set is to replace the ones she lost to the frost! I learned years ago that you should wait until Mother’s Day before planting annuals here in Nebraska. If you don’t, nine times out of 10, a late frost comes and you have to do it all over again. Roxy explained to both of us that it’s okay to plant pansies early, as they can handle the cold weather. With the rest of them, we need to be patient! If you need a fix, buy a blooming plant and keep it inside your house until the timing is right to get outside.

I admit…I definitely don’t have green thumb! Back in the day, I used to plant lots of flowers in boxes around my house. My favorites were impatiens. My previous house had a perfect partially shaded porch. They thrived in that location! They were absolutely stunning. My new house doesn’t have the same exposure, so I haven’t planted impatiens here. Maybe I’ll give it a shot this year…but not before Mother’s Day.

March is a very big birthday month in our household. My husband’s birthday is March 8. I love his birthday…he gets so excited that he reminds me of a little kid. I have never met anyone who can have so much fun trying to guess what his birthday present is. It’s always a challenge to see if I can make it to his birthday without spilling the beans. I’m going to give it my best this year. Happy birthday, honey! Now, let’s not forget the rest of them: My nephew, Seth, celebrates on March 10th. My daughter-in-law, Sam Van deWalle, celebrates on Pi Day (March 14th), and my son-in-law, Ken Rosa, is on March 21st. Happy birthday to every single one of you!

I hope you all have a wonderful month and the weather cooperates. Start planning for your flower beds, but resist the urge to get them in the ground! We’ll talk next month.

March Madness, Lambs and Lions—Let’s Eat!

Quiche Lorraine

Bake 2 pastry-lined pie plates (lightly dock with a fork) for 10 minutes at 400 degrees. Remove. Lower the oven temperature to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix 5 eggs with 8 ounces of sour cream and 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce. Mix well. Divide and sprinkle a small can of canned fried onion rings, 1 cup of diced ham, and 1 cup of grated Swiss cheese between the two partially baked pie crusts. Pour half of the egg mixture into each shell. Bake on cookie sheets at 375 degrees for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Beer Bread

Mix 3 cups of self-rising flour with 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 8 Tablespoons of melted butter, and 1 (12-ounce) bottle of dark beer. Pour into a buttered loaf pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 55 minutes. Cool and slice.

Irish Soda Bread

Whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1/3 cup of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Add 3/4 cup of raisins and 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds (optional). Combine 1 egg with 2/3 cup of buttermilk and 1 Tablespoon of melted butter. Mix just until moist. Flour your hands and knead lightly for a minute. Shape into a plump disk. Cut a cross on top and place in a buttered pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30–35 minutes, until golden. Slice thinly or toast. Serve with butter and jam.

Corned Beef Dinner

Place a package of corned beef and the spice packet into a large soup pot. Add a few chopped carrots and a chopped onion. Fill the pot with water to cover. Bring to a boil, then simmer until

fork-tender (about one hour per pound). Remove the corned beef and cover.

To the hot water, add 1 head of quartered cabbage and 6–10 small red potatoes. Boil for 15 minutes. Slice the corned beef and butter the drained vegetables. Mix a bit of yellow mustard and horseradish into 1/2 cup of sour cream and serve the mixture with the sliced corned beef on rye bread.

Roasted Spring Veg

Assemble vegetables of your choice in a large bowl: 1 peeled and chunk-cut potato or baby yam, 4 peeled and chunk-cut carrots, 1/2 pound of trimmed and cut asparagus, 2 stalks of chunkcut celery, 5 sliced radishes, 2 peeled and cut parsnips, and 2 cloves of sliced garlic. Pour 2 Tablespoons of olive oil over the vegetables. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce. Spread the vegetables out onto a roasting pan or cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 35–40 minutes. Pour a bit of melted butter over the roasted vegetables and serve.

instant vanilla pudding, 4 eggs, 1 stick of soft butter, 1 cup of milk, and 1 ounce of good whiskey. Pour into a greased tube or Bundt-style cake pan. Stir in 1 cup of chopped nuts, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes. Make a powdered sugar glaze by whisking together 2 cups of sifted confectioner’s sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 or 2 Tablespoons of milk (for thinning). Thin the glaze a little more with a bit more whiskey. Drizzle the glaze over the cake and serve.

Creamy Onion Soup

Melt a stick of butter into a large soup pot. Add 5 medium onions, sliced and cut into one-inch pieces. Toss the onions with the butter. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 3 hours, stirring often. Add 1 cup of chicken broth and bake for another hour. Heat 4 cups of milk to a simmer in a saucepan. Mix 3 Tablespoons of flour with 1/2 cup of water, then add to the milk and stir until thickened. Pour the milk mixture into the onions. Stir and bake, uncovered, for another 5–10 minutes. Serve with garlic toasts, shredded Swiss, and chopped scallions.

Oven-Baked Halibut

Brush 2 good-sized halibut steaks with melted butter and lightly dredge in seasoned flour (Old Bay, lemon pepper, garlic powder, dill). Place the steaks in a baking dish and top with onion and lemon slices. Pour 2 cups of hot milk into the baking dish. Bake at 425 degrees for 20–30 minutes, until the fish flakes.

Game Day Pickled Dip

Mix 8 ounces of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of sour cream, a packet of ranch dip powder, 2 teaspoons of minced garlic, and a small (10-ounce) jar of bottled dill pickle relish. Stir in 1/2 cup of toasted panko bread crumbs. Serve with chips, veggies, bagel toasts, crackers, and so on.

Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes

Place 3 pounds of cooked hamburger into a slow cooker. Add 1 chopped onion, 1 stalk of diced celery, and 2 cloves of minced garlic. Mix together and add 1 cup of chili sauce, 1 (14-ounce) can of diced fire-roasted tomatoes, 2 Tablespoons of mustard, 1 Tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/3 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1/2 cup of ketchup, and salt and pepper as desired. Cook on low until heated through, stirring occasionally.

Fluffy Snickerdoodle Cookies

Mix 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and 1/8 teaspoon of ground cardamom. Set aside—this is the mixture that you will roll the dough balls into. Mix 1 cup of soft butter with 1 and 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Whisk together 3 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix the flour mixture into the egg mixture.

Roll the dough into balls and then roll each ball in the sugar-cinnamon mixture to coat. Place on cookie sheets (line with parchment or silicone baking mats). Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. For a fun adventure, make ice cream sandwiches with two cookies and a bit of soft ice cream in the middle. Just wrap and freeze!

Peanut Butter Bread

Mix together 1 room-temperature egg, 1 cup of creamy or chunky peanut butter, 1 cup of milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the milk mixture and lightly mix, adding a few mini chocolate morsels, if desired. Pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45–50 minutes. Test for doneness with a toothpick. Cool for 20 minutes and remove from pan. Serve with jam, honey, and Nutella.

Here Comes Warmer Weather!

The Joy of Spring Fashion

At the first signs of a spring thaw, we will be dreaming about longer days, bluer skies, and warmer breezes. I can feel the excitement already when I’m checking out the new spring fashion trends.

The pant trends we are seeing this season are new and unexpected. Crazy for cargo this year, designers are taking new approaches to those stiff khaki pants we are oh-so-familiar with. While these new cargos do feature fun pockets, the fabrics are changing. This season’s cargo pants feature soft and even silky fabrics in a variety of fabulous spring colors.

What to wear with these new cargo pants is a good question. Cargos have an undeniably casual feel, but they can still be dressed up. A basic shirt that is a bit oversized would be a good top layer. Tuck it in or do a half-tuck to show off the high waistline. Keeping the top tailored and simple would be the best choice, creating a look of sophistication.

What shoes go with the new softer cargo pants? For a casual look, you can go with sneakers or loafers, but if you want to dress it up a bit, try mules. Mules look great with cargo pants, whether you go for a heeled mule, flat, or wedge. Sandals are another good choice, but cargo pants look best when the sandal is a bit chunky, with a platform or chunky heel. Leave the delicate, feminine sandals for the days you wear your pretty dresses.

It’s no secret that denim is loved by most, and this year will offer many interesting pieces. You will find new denim trends not only in pants but also in trench coats, maxi skirts, jackets, blazers, dresses, and shirts. Denim pants have been moving toward a more relaxed look over the past year and will continue with that momentum in 2023. That doesn’t mean your skinny jeans are out of style—they’ve become a classic, so there’s always a place for them in your closet.

Two-tone jeans with lighter and darker variations will be at the forefront of the fashion crowd. Worn with a classic white shirt, these jeans look fresh and flattering. Patchwork jeans are another very wearable trend that designers are featuring. A trend that keeps popping up is puddle pants. These long trousers pool (that is,

10 March 2023 Fashion Worthy

puddle) around the ankles. Not too practical on a rainy day, but they make your legs look miles long.

With spring comes romance and the feeling of a fresh start. It is the season of renewal, and that includes our wardrobes! Spring dresses will be bursting with florals, ruffles, and frills. If you can’t wait until the weather gets warm to wear your pretty spring dresses, try topping them with a new denim blazer. These trends look perfect together.

Vibrant color makes you feel renewed after all the gray of winter, and the Pantone color of the year reflects just that. The color of the year is Viva Magenta. It is a brilliant hot pink...so brilliant that it is almost neon! You will see it popping up in fashion and home goods. Splashing a bit of this color into your spring wardrobe will perk you up! Look for florals that have a bit of hot pink in them or try a beautiful silk blouse in magenta. It’s a fresh take on spring wardrobe color, which so often focuses on pastels.

Most women have at least three top options for every one bottom, pant, or skirt. Women love new tops, and this spring offers some gems. Interesting sleeves have been on point for a couple of years now, and the trend continues. One of my favorites is a top with a solid color front and back but featuring sleeves in a sheer fabric with a colorful pattern.

Another ongoing trend has been the cold-shoulder top. This type of blouse usually features a cut-out at the top of the shoulder that extends to the top of the arm. This season, the look has developed into a feminine and chic style that bares just one shoulder.

Silky fabrics are trending for spring. Light, translucent silks will allow you to wear items with sleeves on hot days. At the same time, these fabrics give you a feeling of comfort and drape elegantly on the body. A silky shirt looks great with jeans and mixes well with any skirt or trousers in your closet. Have some fun with it!

Out with the cold and in with the blue…the blue sky of spring, that is! Along with hot pink and lavender posies come hope, love, and a wonderful new spring full of joy and exuberance!

Aislinn Medical Spa

Helping Clients Reach Their Dreams

Sales and Marketing Director Jennifer Rohwer loves to talk about the transformation she sees in clients after receiving services at Aislinn. Clients exhibit visible differences after only a few weeks into a customized program, but it’s not just about the physical changes, Jennifer says. She loves to see the happiness and confidence they radiate when they feel good about themselves and the changes they are making.

Some of the medical services making a difference in customers’ self-confidence are dermal fillers, line relaxers, skin rejuvenation, and Coolsculpting. Coolsculpting is a non-surgical process that uses cold to reduce fat in the treated areas. Skin rejuvenation services include facial peels and microneedling, a process that reaches deeper levels of the skin to regenerate tissue. Dermal fillers add volume to reduce wrinkles, and line relaxer injections stop facial muscles from contracting and creating wrinkles. All of these procedures create quick results and require little to no downtime. For clients who are tussling with the unpleasant symptoms of menopause or andropause, Aislinn provides hormone therapy.

Aislinn’s spa services include traditional massages, body wraps, HydraFacials, organic facials, and facial peels. They also offer brow tinting, hair removal and waxing, eyelash extensions, teeth whitening, and microdermabrasion. If you have been wondering if there is a way to repair your skin or something else about your body, Aislinn likely has a solution for you.

Aislinn’s new Health and Wellness Program provides long-term weight loss solutions. It is a 12-week program that includes weekly injections of Semaglutide, a diabetes medication recently approved by the FDA for weight loss. Dr. Julie Waddell at Aislinn describes the medication as an appetite suppressant that releases sugar from the liver and stored fat from fat cells. The Mayo Clinic reports side effects that start off as minimal and become almost non-existent after the body adjusts to the medication. The Health and Wellness Program includes physical examinations, laboratory work, a consultation with a certified health coach, and more.

The approach of the team at Aislinn is cohesive and personalized. They meet with you to determine your goals and discuss options for treatment. They make it as easy as possible to get the results you want. A perfect example is the Laser Hair Removal Club, an easy and affordable way to achieve smooth skin anywhere on the body.

Another way Aislinn creates joy for clients is with their customizable party packages. Gather a group of friends and spend the day relaxing, rejuvenating, and having fun. To

schedule a party with Aislinn, let them know how many people will attend and which services the guests are interested in. The Aislinn team will customize a package that includes something delicious and fun in a private room for your guests—champagne and strawberries, anyone?

Aislinn will customize a party package for any type of celebration, but their new Bridal Beauty Collection packages are a big hit. You can choose from seven different packages in the bridal collection. They range from the Relax and Recharge package (sugar scrub massage, dermaplaning facial, and an injection of B12 and antioxidants) to the grand packages that include Coolsculpting, Juvéderm fillers, and much more.

The team at Aislinn knows how to celebrate their clients. They have four annual events, all large celebrations to thank clients and provide an opportunity for the public to meet the staff. They celebrated their third birthday in February and will have a gala in May with entertainment, a band, and more. Their holiday festivities take place in November, but they have so much fun that they’ve added “Christmas in July” events to their calendar.

Jennifer attributes Aislinn’s success to their joyful environment, personalized service, and small-town values. The spa is involved in the Gretna community, and Jennifer herself serves on the Gretna Chamber of Commerce board. The team pays attention to detail and provides personalized, oneon-one service for each client. This individual attention is essential, since their clients include women and men ranging in age from 13 years to 85. In just three years, the spa has doubled in size and has expanded their provider list to add another massage therapist and an aesthetician.

Aislinn Medical Spa is located at 818 Village Square, near the intersection of Highway 370 and Highway 6 in Gretna. You can find all their services and a profile of each staff member at aislinnmedspa.com. They are happy to answer your questions by phone at 402-397-2300, and they are even happier to help you feel good, inside and out.

In Irish, “aislinn” means “dream” or “vision.” At Aislinn Medical Spa in Gretna, you’ll find a dedicated staff of medical and aesthetic professionals helping clients realize their dreams of looking and feeling great.

Superstitions Explored

Rooted in Culture, History

Billions of otherwise sensible and rational people around the globe believe in some form of superstition happening in their daily lives. These beliefs don’t come from thin air! When a positive or negative event is associated with some behavior, the notion of a superstition is born. Even those of us who don’t lean too heavily on superstition still say“bless you”when someone sneezes or keep a lookout for trouble on Friday the 13th. Superstitions may not be based in fact, but they have deep roots in our shared culture and history. I thought it might be fun to explore some of the most common ones. Let’s begin with the bad luck superstitions!

Unlucky 13: Fear of bad luck on the 13th is so prevalent that some airlines don’t have a 13th row and many tall buildings do not have a 13th floor. One of the origins of this superstition is that Judas Iscariot was the 13th guest at the Last Supper.

Walking under a ladder: It seems like common sense to avoid walking under a ladder because something might fall on you, but this superstition has its beginnings in mythology. A ladder, along with the wall it leans on and the ground it rests on, makes the shape of a triangle. At various times in history, people believed that walking through a triangle was tempting the Fates, disturbing evil spirits, or disrespecting the Holy Trinity.

Breaking a mirror: Many people believe that breaking a mirror can bring you seven years of bad luck. Mirrors, like

talk

photos, were once thought to reflect the soul. A break, then, would harm your soul. The number seven is believed to emanate from the time that the Romans believed it took for a life to be renewed.

Opening an umbrella indoors: It seems like a no-brainer not to open an umbrella inside because of the risk of breaking valuable items or poking someone in the eye. This common superstition, however, comes from an ancient fear of disrespecting the sun god by misusing the tool that shades us from the sun.

Black cat crossing your path: Apologies to readers who are cat lovers, but black cats got caught up in the hysteria surrounding witches in centuries past. They were believed to be familiars of witches (or perhaps even witches transformed!). Their presence suggested bad luck to come.

16 March 2023 A Woman’s Work

Groom seeing the bridge before the wedding: Seen now as a romantic gesture, it has its origins in perhaps too-practical arranged marriages. Marriage was once strictly a business deal, usually made by the bride’s father. The tradition of the couple not seeing each other until the ceremony was born out of fear that the groom might back out of the contract if he found the bride unattractive.

Now, let’s move on to some superstitions about good luck!

Lucky seven: The number seven is everywhere—days in a week, colors in a rainbow, dwarves who lived with Snow White, wonders of the ancient world. The ubiquity of the number seven in human culture may stem from its religious significance, like the powers said to be given to the seventh son of the seventh son. In many religions around the world, holy texts speak of seven underworlds or seven heavens.

Finding a penny: Long ago, certain metals, like copper, were considered gifts from the gods and were meant to protect the population. Coins made of these metals, like copper pennies, had lucky properties. For my part, if I am at a casino, and I find a penny on the floor, I believe it brings me good luck.

Knocking on wood: This superstition dates back to believing that gods lived in trees. To ask the gods for a favor, you would lightly tap the bark. If your wish was granted, you would knock on the tree again, thanking the celestial beings for the gift.

Tossing salt over your shoulder: Historically, salt has been very valuable— in some places, worth its weight in gold. Spilling it, then, heralded more bad luck. To counteract the bad luck, you would toss a pinch over your left shoulder (that’s the shoulder where evil spirits were said to sit, and salt in their eyes would drive them away).

Saying “Bless you!” when someone sneezes: Nowadays, this is mostly just polite, but it used to have a much more specific meaning. The Romans believed a strong sneeze might release your soul, but asking for a blessing would keep it home.

I find superstitions fascinating! There are so many across so many cultures, and it’s interesting to see which ones span different times and places. They may seem irrational to some, but others believe these actions have important meaning.

Specialty Dental Care

Something to Smile About

I will be the first to admit that a trip to the dentist has never been an event that I look forward to. However, after visiting the offices of Specialty Dental Care, I think I could be persuaded to have a different attitude. Let me explain. Upon first meeting Dr. Tim McVaney, I was immediately struck by the sincerity that he extended to me when we sat down to talk about what is important to him and his practice. Even after 40 years in the dental field

and becoming a leading expert in periodontal care, Dr. McVaney is tirelessly committed to continuing education. To top it all off, he has an engaging sense of humor that I suspect he has used many times to quell the anxiety of the dental experience. Dr. McVaney seems to be quite gifted in the art of giving his patients something to smile about.

How is a periodontist different from a regular dentist who likes to keep your teeth clean and treat cavities? These basic dental procedures are a dentist’s specialty. If you have swollen or bleeding gums, you need more specialized treatment from a periodontist, who diagnoses and treats gum disease. You may need what is referred to as deep pocket cleaning to help stop the disease from going further, or you may need further intervention. The team at Specialty Dental Care is here to handle advanced gum disease, manage inflammation, and improve the overall quality of your oral health.

Another exceptional service that Dr. McVaney provides is dental implants. A dental implant takes the place of a tooth. There are many reasons you may want a dental implant, including missing teeth, dentures that do not fit right, and even partials that do not fit and cause you irritation and pain. Dental implants have the ability to change the quality of your life in very positive ways. Besides looking great and working well, implants can protect healthy bone in the jaw and the mouth. Implants are designed to last a lifetime, and the color can be matched to your healthy teeth.

Many of the staff members at Specialty Dental Care have been with Dr. McVaney for many years, and that is a testament to the dedication and commitment that you will find within his practice. After meeting Dr. McVaney, it was no surprise to me that people enjoy working with him day after day! He brings an aura of good cheer that spreads through the office. I was able to meet several of his staff members, and they were all very courteous and knowledgeable. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience.

Something I had never thought about until it was pointed out to me is that some of the fear of dentistry stems from claustrophobia. That makes complete sense and accounts for much of my personal anxiety regarding dental work. When I first stepped into Specialty Dental Care, I felt none of the closed-in anxiety that I have felt at various dental offices over the years. The office feels very open and fresh. High ceilings and lots of windows can go a long way in alleviating claustrophobia for me, and I suspect that many of the good doctor’s patients share this sentiment. That should surely quell some of the anxiety and fear-related phobias that dental patients may have.

As I mentioned earlier, Dr. McVaney likes to approach his patients with humor and to put them at ease regarding their procedures. I can certainly vouch for that—as we were doing our interview, he had me laughing quite a bit. His gentle, caring demeanor is such a breath of fresh air, and I believe he would do quite well at making his patients feel like they are not helpless while in the dental chair.

If wide open spaces and his pleasant demeanor are not enough to put a patient at ease, Dr. McVaney offers several different sedation options for patients who are undergoing a procedure. Nitrous oxide and IV sedation or medication to relax you are several of the solutions that are offered at Specialty Dental Care.

While Dr. McVaney’s impressive credentials represent over 40 years of dental work and teaching, his passion for his patients and healthy oral care are at the forefront of his practice. Dr. McVaney is rewarded every day with healthy smiles. Yours could be one of them!

Home Remodeling for Function and Beauty!

2023 Tips and Trends

When the earth awakens amid spring’s blooming delight, it’s a sign that your home’s interior might need awakening, too. After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, spring offers a creative window on the calendar to make a home remodeling plan. Changes like fresh paint can revive a room, but bigger changes, like upgrading a kitchen, bath, or family room, increase home value. Once you have a vision, questions will follow. How do you make a plan? Finance a budget? Will remodeling costs decrease in 2023? What pros help keep you on task, up to code, and on the path to your dream remodel? Read on, and let’s find out!

Specialized contractors can remodel, renovate, and restore a home and help you avoid costly mistakes. These pros help remodel your home to the standard you desire, but they also balance beauty with function, adding a dose of realism. Your general contractor often hires out for work like plumbers, electricians, skilled floor installers, and those who specialize in windows and window treatments.

Timelines for work completion depend on the work required. Don’t forget that supplies are not always immediately available. Be patient with your builder! Smaller home remodels may take up to 10 months, depending on what is needed. Larger homes may take up to 15 months…or longer, if the builder is waiting for permits or supplies are delayed.

It’s tempting to jump on what TheZeroReport.com calls “the upgrade train,” since we see inspiration all over HGTV and the internet. It’s true that home remodels are generally a smart investment—when done right, they are likely to add value to your home. However, they point out, “knocking down walls and installing granite countertops isn’t as easy as it appears on TV, and with lots of factors to consider (and potential unknowns that can catch you by surprise), home projects can become quite complicated. If you want to renovate your home but are not sure where to start, experts agree that the first order of business is to define your vision and priorities, then hire pros to do the demolishing and heavy lifting.”

How do you find that ideal architect, designer, or contractor? Start with a search for an architect to help design the remodel while keeping structural demands and safety codes in mind. Architects are proficient in their ability to balance visual appeal with structural integrity, bringing it all together on the construction blueprint. Architects are regulated by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). There should also be local chapter of The American Institute of Architects or AIA to help narrow your search. Be sure to check their references and licensure before choosing an architect.

Designers usually focus on décor and furnishings, often with an artistic flair. Experienced designers help further

your project with a level of precision that may be difficult to accomplish on your own. Read client reviews and ask friends, family, and neighbors for referrals. Ask to see the designer’s work before you sign a contract. Get curious before you hire! Designers might have an education in interior design, a value-added resource.

Also look into your general contractor. You want to see what they’ve built and learn whether or not their clients were satisfied with the results. Residential building contractors are required to carry a license awarded by the Department of Labor and Industry. To get licensed, they need to show proof of liability and worker’s compensation insurance, pass a trade exam, and pass a business and law exam. You can check with the Better Business Bureau to see if a contractor has a history of customer disputes.

Cosmetic changes like paint, new kitchen cabinets, hardwood floors, and the like don’t usually require a permit. Building permits are required for most structural changes, like room additions or a new garage. Your contractor will apply for permits and keep your building up to code. What does building code mean? That means that there are regulations defining the minimum construction standards for safety. State and local governments usually decide specifics, so the code is a function of the county or city in which the construction is taking place.

Have a detailed plan before hiring your professionals. Be aware of the current cost of labor and materials, ask for references, verify licenses and insurance, be realistic about availability, budget for unexpected costs, expect to pay a deposit, keep your receipts, and stay in touch frequently with your remodeling team. Be sure that your contractor is bonded and insured in case there’s a dispute or an accident. Construction insurance is usually a contract between the insurer and the insured, a protection in case of an accident. A surety bond is typically an agreement to protect all parties in the remodel project from any financial loss in case the contractor deviates from the original contract.

Will the cost of renovations go down this year? No one can say for certain, but experts are expecting the economy to slow and inflation to moderate, which would lead to stabilized costs in 2023. That’s good news!

20 March 2023 Fresh Concept
Architects are proficient in their ability to balance visual appeal with structural integrity...

What rooms carry the most value when renovating? Kitchen and bath projects are two upgrades well worth the money spent. Kitchen updates, like new cabinets or upgraded appliances, really pay off when it comes time to sell. Why not enjoy those updates now instead of making them right before you sell? A bathroom facelift boosts property value, too. Transform any bath space to an open and airy atmosphere with a new mirror, sink, shower, and updated lighting. Some contractors say that you can recoup up to 95 percent of your investment. Not bad for transforming a space you’ll get to use often!

Adding a deck or additional floor space can have a return on investment of greater than 100 percent, and it will improve curb appeal. Don’t forget about attic or basement space! Conversion of existing space into a workout area, recreation area, or work area is valuable both for resale and for a happier lifestyle before you sell. A tip for upgrades: If you’re remodeling for resale purposes, keep the upgrades neutral and appealing to a wide audience—not every buyer is interested in paying for a new marble floor in the bathroom.

Hot changes for bathroom remodeling in 2023 include curvier architecture and calmer colors and lighting in the bath (think ocean blue, charcoal and white, beige and cream). In the kitchen, trends are leaning toward distinctive, personalized kitchen space. In contrast to the neutral bath colors, vibrant tones are popular in the kitchen. Kitchen islands are a big hit in 2023, and home bars are trending. Kitchen appliance upgrades are trending big as an inflation buster, not to mention a shiny new addition to one of the most-used rooms in your home.

Bringing the outside indoors is a hot carryover this year.

Invest in your health in 2023 with concierge healthcare at Members.MD

Open space with retractable screen doors and oversized patio doors brings nature inside. Energy updates are surging this year to help lower utility bills, cut inflation, and decrease your global blueprint.

Before you spend, calculate how much you can afford. Establish a spending limit so you don’t go overboard, setting priorities with your contractors. Prioritize projects by room, building a budget for each project separately. Discussing each project with your professional team will help you get a handle on how much your dream remodel would cost…and where you can trim to stay within your budget without losing out on the big picture.

A cash project still needs parameters, but many people will borrow from existing home equity to finance a remodel. If it makes sense, a cash-out refinance is one option. You’ll refinance your existing mortgage (if there is one) and receive cash back up to 80 percent of the home’s pre-renovation value. Keep in mind that refinance rates can be significantly different from your current mortgage rate. Make sure your loan officer crunches the numbers for the new payment and calculates how much interest you will or will not save. A home equity line of credit (HELOC) is a good option for extra funds. A HELOC is a separate loan from your mortgage and usually calls for interest-only payments. This can be attractive when you want the option of not making a principal-and-interest payment until you’re ready.

Revamp your home for beauty, function, and resale value. Then sit back, enjoy your space, and build life’s memories!

South Africa Five Ways to See the Big Five

Have you ever wanted to go on an African safari, but thought a trip like that was out of your reach? If so, you will be very excited to know that your dreams of seeing the Big Five in person can become a reality without breaking the bank. Just ask your travel agent—if you can be flexible with your timing, your agent can find you cheap flights to South Africa. American citizens do not need a visa or even an international driver’s license to drive there. The more you read up on the country’s official travel website, the more you will be biting at the bit to go. Here’s a taste of why:

Let’s start with the Big Five, which refers to the African lion, African elephant, African leopard, Cape buffalo, and black rhino. There is actually a Big Seven when you add water, to include the great white shark and southern right whale. South Africa is definitely one of the best destinations in the world if you want to see wildlife (in its natural habitat, that is). Along with the diversity of animals, you have several choices in how you want to see things.

Visitors generally fly into Johannesburg or Cape Town airports. Plan to stay in the city and explore for a few days before moving on. Yes, you can drink the water; yes, it is as safe as any large city you may have visited. You can easily rent a car from well-known international companies—just remember to stay to your left on the road! Since the flight to South Africa will take about 15 hours or more, plan to stay at least two weeks, if you can, to get the most out of your trip.

In Cape Town, you can see Table Mountain (one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the most photographed place in South Africa) and the Cape Whale Route, which is perfect for whale-watching from land. Johannesburg has a great food scene and gorgeous botanical gardens; it’s the perfect place to set off on a train journey.

Kruger National Park is one of the most famous parks in which to go on safari. Among the Big Five, there are thousands of animals. You are also likely to see giraffes, hundreds of species of birds, big cats, antelope, hippos, and crocodiles. In regard to safaris, you have so many options to choose from: walking, mountain-biking, driving, riding on an elephant, or flying in a hot air balloon. Take your pick or do them all! The traditional 4x4 rides work just fine, especially when you end up getting a little too close for comfort to one of these wild animals—your driver can speed you away. I recommend at least a walking safari and a traditional driving one. Prices for safaris depend on the level of luxury you are looking for. While you can be very comfortable in a tent setting, there are also luxury camping settings and lodges as options.

When should you go? Any time will be a blast, but keep in mind that the seasons in the southern hemisphere are opposite to those of us up north, so South Africa’s summers are during our winters, and vice versa. If you want to go on a safari based on temperatures, opt for their winter, when the weather is the most pleasant. If you want to see more wildlife, go in late winter. Because the vegetation is sparse, you will catch animals drinking at the waterholes. Cape Town is best in the spring or fall, when the flowers are blooming and the vineyards start to change colors.

Whale-watching is at its best off the Cape coast. One of the best places in the world for this is the town of Hermanus, and the best time is from late winter through early summer. You can even try paragliding off the cliffs to see the whales! From mid-May to mid-July, catch South Africa’s famous sardine run along the KwaZulu Natal coastline from the Cape to the east coast. These sardine schools are usually 15 kilometers long, 4 kilometers wide, and 40 meters deep! The birds are dive-bombing from the air above, while the dolphins and sharks are moving the sardines into “bait balls” underneath the water. This is definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime chances to see an amazing and exciting natural phenomenon, either in a boat or underwater with a camera.

South Africa has so much to offer visitors! It’s affordable, has amazing natural beauty, is full of adventure, and features all that wildlife. After a safari experience there, you will definitely be looking for flights to return.

Peterson Inspections & Home Repair Investment

Protection You Can Trust

When you buy a new home, you want to know you are making a sound investment. Several times in my life, I have fallen in love with a house and purchased it, only to be treated to expensive surprises after the sale. Of course, these purchases were accomplished without the benefit of a home inspection. Well, that is not going to happen to me ever again and hopefully it will not happen to you. If you’re falling in love with a house and don’t want to see any future problems, don’t sign on the dotted line yet! Call Peterson Inspections & Home Repair.

A professional home inspection can make all the difference in whether or not you go through with the purchase of a particular home. Aaron Peterson has been in the business for over 10 years, and he can find problems that you and your real estate agent didn’t see.

Home inspections are very important and worth the investment. When I purchased without a home inspection, it was the big ticket items (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) that drained my bank account when they presented themselves at the least convenient times. With Aaron, you can be totally confident that he will examine every inch of a home, from the foundation all the way up to the roof, saving you from some costly home repairs down the road…or even saving you from buying the wrong house!

Aaron Peterson spent several years at a state-operated non-profit concerned with affordable housing and making the homes more energy efficient. Ultimately, he realized there was need for more small businesses capable of doing this kind of work, and he started Peterson Inspections & Home Repairs seven years ago. “I knew I had the skills because of the many facets of the job I’d held,” he recalls. “That training was more in-depth than most people learn in school or regular construction work because of the myriad state requirements which needed to be met.”

Most of his previous job had involved inspections of houses. “I learned to look for problems that might not be apparent to the untrained eye,” says Aaron. His work also put him in touch with others doing similar work in the community. “Some of the problems were minor and easily fixed by our own people; others required hiring larger, better equipped crews,” Aaron recalls. “I learned who could be relied on and who wasn’t quite as dependable. That knowledge has been a real asset in running my own company.”

Regarding the home inspections Aaron gave this example: Imagine you find a wonderful new home. You move in, decorate the space, and buy great new furniture and appliances. You love the place... until next summer, when the air conditioner fails, the ceiling shows a water stain, and you

see the beginnings of a mold problem. According to Aaron, there are four things a careful home inspector will call attention to, many issues that even the most observant homeowner can miss. They are poor electrical wiring, water damage, defective plumbing, and mold growth. He encourages everyone to make sure to schedule a home inspection before you buy property or even before you list your property, to find possible issues that need repairing before it’s on the market. In the end, it will make your life so much easier.

Aaron’s approach to the business relies on common sense: that people need accurate information in order to make the best decision. He thinks it is important to go over the details with prospective homebuyers to make sure that they understand everything that was examined and inspected and what repairs need to be made.

The biggest challenge Aaron’s clients have recently faced in light of the housing shortage is the pressure to skip a home inspection to be even considered for a purchase offer. The unfortunate result can often be moving into a new home and soon finding out that repairs are needed.

Aaron loves the opportunity to work face-to-face with his clients and likes to keep them apprised of common sense things to look for when buying their future home. Aaron says, “It’s truly rewarding when I see a client smile and feel confident in their home purchase.” Aaron really enjoys what he does and the flexibility it gives him to work with several people. He believes in charging a fair price for quality work, and he comes highly recommended for his professionalism and knowledge.

Client Jim Curry says, “I found Peterson Inspections to be reliable. They do good work and Aaron and his people are great to work with. I highly recommend them.”

Smoothing Out the Creases A Wrinkle Reduction Guide

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging, so it’s impossible to avoid them entirely. Even as we age, however, we all want to put our best face forward. Fortunately, there are numerous options to help you do just that. Choices range from non-invasive to minimally invasive, as well as surgical procedures.

Topical creams are a commonly used non-invasive wrinkle treatment. Vitamin A derivatives called retinoids reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and roughness, and results are visible after a few weeks. Vitamin C is a known antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles. Alpha hydroxy acid creams exfoliate the skin and stimulate cell growth.

Laser skin resurfacing is another non-invasive treatment. It utilizes light energy to repair and regenerate skin cells. The laser transmits photons into the skin’s membranes, increasing collagen production and blood circulation. It’s a good option for the forehead, mouth, and eye areas. Two common types of laser therapy are CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser treatment and Erbium laser treatment. CO2 therapy uses short pulses or continuous light beams to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. Recovery generally takes about two weeks. Erbium laser resurfacing is designed to remove both surface lines and moderately deep lines on the face, hands, neck, or chest. Recovery time is usually faster than with CO2 treatment.

A non-invasive chemical peel is one of the most effective skin resurfacing treatments available. Chemical peels use an acid such as glycolic acid to promote skin turnover. Benefits include getting rid of deep wrinkles, scars, and age spots. A chemical solution is applied to the skin. This solution gradually peels away the damaged skin layers. Results may last for several years.

Microneedling, sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a non-surgical technique during which thin needles are used to create tiny punctures in the skin’s top layer. The resulting small wounds stimulate the skin’s healing process by causing the body to produce more collagen and elastin, helping the skin to look younger, softer, and smoother. It minimizes pores, evens out skin tone, diminishes dark circles, and can fade stretch marks and acne scars. Microneedling does not result in skin discoloration, making it a good choice for all skin tones. Recovery time and side effects are minimal.

Toxin injections such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin diminish crow’s feet and those deep creases between the

eyebrows known as frown lines. The toxins are injected into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the skin. The effects last three to four months, at which time the injections can be repeated. Little downtime is involved.

Approved by the FDA in 2019, Jeuveau is considered the newest injectable toxin specifically for cosmetic use. Jeuveau employs a new type of technology that works by interrupting the communication between the nerve ending and its targeted muscle. Patients can see results in as little as 2 or 3 days. Jeuveau is a preferred choice as an injector for younger people who want to stop the early signs of aging. Like other injectables, it’s commonly used to reduce forehead and frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, and other fine lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are another commonly used filler. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your skin, helping to keep it elastic. Although the fillers are synthetically produced, they are almost identical to the hyaluronic acid produced naturally in the body. These fillers help keep the treatment area plump and hydrated. Results last approximately 6 to 12 months, maybe longer, as the body gradually absorbs the particles. These fillers are a good choice for covering scars and filling creases and folds. They are sometimes used along with Botox to soften lines between the eyebrows.

Surgical wrinkle diminishing techniques such as dermabrasion involve planing or sanding the skin with a rotating instrument. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons perform dermabrasion under local anesthesia. The outer layer of skin is removed, exposing newer, younger-looking skin, and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It can also improve acne scars, tattoo scars, and liver spots. It takes approximately one week for the skin to heal following dermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion, a more superficial treatment, uses tiny crystals that are sprayed onto the skin. It’s an exfoliation-like procedure that gives the skin a softer appearance. It causes no bleeding and requires minimal downtime. Several are required for optimal results. As with dermabrasion, results may last for several months.

Don’t let your wrinkles define you! Consult an aesthetic professional to find out which treatment is best for you, and start your journey to a younger-looking you.

Standing the Test of Time The Enduring Style of Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floors bring elegance and warmth to any space, complementing every design aesthetic. Factor in their durability, low maintenance, and longevity (hardwood floors can last for over a century), and it’s easy to see why wood flooring remains the top choice among homeowners!

Not only is hardwood flooring a good investment for the enjoyment of your family, it’s also a smart financial decision. A recent National Association of Realtors (NAR) study reported that homeowners can recoup a whopping 118 percent of their investment in new hardwood floors and 147 percent on refinished wood floors. While the upfront cost of hardwood may exceed other flooring choices, the return on investment makes it worth it in the long run.

Taking time to familiarize yourself with the various types of wood will help you decide which one most appeals to you. Wood is organic; as such, each species has its own personality in terms of grain pattern, how it accepts stain, and how it impacts the overall style of a space.

Due to its durability and classic grain pattern, oak remains the number-one choice in the marketplace. As homeowners gravitate toward more natural, neutral colors—lighter shades of cream, honey, beige, and medium browns—white oak has surged in popularity because it takes stain very well and without the pinkish undertones of red oak. Maple, hickory, cherry,

and ash are great options, each offering unique qualities. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference and issues of cost and availability.

Another consideration is deciding between solid or engineered hardwood. Solid wood floors consist of natural hardwood planks that can be stained, sanded down, and refinished many times. Solid wood is susceptible to moisture and is therefore not recommended for below-grade use in basements. Engineered wood flooring consists of a veneer of hardwood glued to plywood, making it moisture-resistant and suitable for any room. Engineered flooring comes pre-stained and can be sanded down and refinished once or twice in its lifetime.

If you live in an older home with its original hardwood floors, they may be showing signs of wear and tear, like water stains, scratches, and areas worn dull by foot traffic. Instead of replacing them, breathe new life into tired wood floors by having them refinished. A professional wood floor refinisher can completely change the wood color and replace broken or squeaky boards. To maintain lustrous wood floors,

refinishing is recommended about every 10 years. Solid hardwood floors can be refinished several times in their lifetime, meaning that floors can be transformed from the lightest of tones to the darkest and back again!

Most floors are refinished with polyurethane, a durable, moisture-resistant protective coating. Water-based polyurethane is a healthy choice for your family, pets, and the environment. It dries quickly, allowing for multiple coats to be applied in one day. It has no significant odor, so it’s safe for people to occupy the house during the application. Water-based products remain clear over time, maintaining the natural look of the wood.

Oil-based polyurethane offers better protection against scratches but, due to high VOC levels, people should not be present in the home during the application and drying process. Recent trends toward more natural textured appearances has led to the growing popularity of environmentally friendly UV oil finishes. Penetrating oils soak deeply into the wood pores, lending a more matte finish. These should be re-applied yearly.

Whichever refinishing process you opt for, it’s best to wait 24–48 hours before walking on floors. Keep pets and furniture off new floors for at least 2 days for water-based finishes and 4 days for oil-based finishes. Maintain the beauty of your new hardwood floors by sweeping up dust and dirt daily and cleaning up spills quickly.

Wood floors are durable and long lasting, but you can only re-sand a floor so many times. Proper hardwood flooring installation or refinishing takes time, precision, and know-how, so it’s always best to hire a professional who can get the job done right the first time. There are a few signs to watch for that indicate a floor has already been sanded down as many times as it can be. Look for cracking along the edges of individual planks or exposed nail heads. If more than 30 percent of the boards have warping, chipping, or deep staining, replacing the floor may make more sense.

Whether your design aesthetic is modern, traditional, or industrial chic, wood may well be the right flooring to pull it all together. Hardwood floor deserves some serious consideration if you’re debating a new flooring option in your home. It may just be one of the best choices you make!

The Five Pillars of Health

Build a Foundation of Well-Being

In construction, a strong foundation keeps a building standing while the forces of nature test the strength of the structure. If the foundation is strong, the building survives. The same applies to our health and well-being. If your foundation is weak, the changes you make to your lifestyle may not bring the health benefits you anticipated. If you have tried the diet and exercise routine over and over again, but you’re still not feeling like your overall health has improved as much as it should have, maybe that is because you only focused on two of the five pillars of health. Your foundation needs more support!

Suggesting that we focus on the five pillars of good health and well-being may sound like another diet trend, but this is no fad. It is the belief that if you address all of your needs, you will enjoy long-term improvements in your health and well-being. When it comes to improving our health, many of us think about weight management and exercise. These are important elements of good health, but focusing on diet and exercise alone isn’t going to bring us up to 100 percent.

This year, focus on these five pillars: detoxification, nutrition, fitness, hormone optimization, and stress reduction. Read on for a breakdown of each pillar.

Detoxification. More commonly called a detox or cleanse diet, this is a short-term diet designed to eliminate toxins from your body. A typical detox involves a period of fasting, drinking only juices or other liquids, eating only certain foods, using di-

etary supplements or herbs, or cleansing the colon. The proposed benefits include losing weight, sleeping better, resting the organs, boosting circulation, decreasing inflammation in the body, and improving the skin.

The duration of a detox or cleanse should be very short— only a few days. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out which type of detoxification might work best for you.

Nutrition. Eating a healthy diet has nearly unlimited benefits. It keeps skin, teeth, and eyes healthy. It supports your muscles, boosts immunity, and strengthens bones. A healthy diet decreases the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Talk to a dietitian to help you find the right balance of foods for you to stay at a healthy weight for the long term.

Fitness. Want to feel better, have more energy, and even add years to your life? That’s simple—just exercise! Regardless

of age or physical ability, regular exercise is something everyone can benefit from. Regular exercise helps control weight; wards off health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol; protects you from stroke; and can improve cognitive function. Exercise improves your mood, boosts your energy level, helps you sleep more soundly, and can put the spark back into your sex life.

The great thing about exercise is that you can start slow and build up. If you struggle to understand what you need to do, hire a personal trainer. If you need some encouragement, join a gym, take a group exercise class, or exercise with a buddy. Find physical activities that you enjoy, and it will be easier to keep at it. Don’t be afraid to try something new!

Hormone optimization. This may sound less familiar than some of the other pillars of health, but it’s important to find out whether your hormone levels are below their optimal threshold. Your whole body works better when it is producing the right hormones at the right levels. If the body is not producing the hormones it should, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could be an option. A primary care provider, ob/gyn, or endocrinologist can run the necessary tests and discuss what HRT options might be right for you.

Stress reduction. Many of us don’t realize how much stress our bodies are enduring. Even if we do realize we’re overstressed, we might not know what to do about it. Chronic stress can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, weight gain, inflammation, and decreased memory or concentration. Watch for physical signs of stress like headaches, trouble sleeping, upset stomach, sudden weight gain or loss, and tense muscles.

Once you’ve recognized the stress in your life, look for ways to reduce it. Some people enjoy solitary activities like reading or meditation. Others prefer the social aspect of a yoga class or a walk with a friend. Still others relax best in the outdoors, perhaps hiking or working in their garden. Do whatever relaxes you!

Make 2023 the year you really improve your health. Incorporate these five pillars into your overall health plan and see how strong you feel.

Elder Law of Omaha Legal Advice for Seniors

The senior citizen population in the United States continues to grow. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 52 million people in this category (age 65 years and older), and that number is expected to almost double by 2060. Largely because of advancements in medicine and technology, the next decade will likely see seniors outnumbering children. People are just living longer, and older people have unique needs in many areas of life, including unique legal needs. That is why Catherine Swininarski opened her firm, Elder Law of Omaha, PC, LLO, in 2010.

Catherine is the owner and managing attorney of Elder Law of Omaha. She started her practice after observing the struggles that her grandmother had with legal issues. “My grandmother came to me for legal assistance,” Catherine recalls. At the time, Catherine was already an experienced attorney but did not specialize in elder law. “I did my due diligence and began to learn everything about elder law. After I helped her, she literally began a word-of-mouth marketing campaign, telling her friends I could help them with their unique legal needs.”

From that effort, Catherine and a cousin began the firm at a kitchen table, working part-time. “I have been an attorney for 40 years,” Catherine says. “I attended Creighton School of Law and taught there briefly. I have also taught at College of Saint Mary and Metro Community College. I interned at Kiewit and was an attorney at private firms. But when I saw the underserved need of the elderly through my grandmother’s experience, I knew I had found my calling.”

Make A Wish.indd 1 2/9/22 4:10 PM

The firm now has three attorneys and a staff of six. Catherine oversees the firm’s professional staff who take care of administration, finances, marketing, and human resources, this allows Catherine more time to meet with clients. The firm provides a variety of elder law services, including long-term Medicaid planning, veterans services, estate planning, adult guardianships and conservatorships, special needs trusts, asset preservation trusts, estate administration/probate, and revocable living trusts.

Catherine takes great pride in her firm’s unique focus on the elderly. “If you had a brain tumor, you wouldn’t go to a general practice physician for treatment, you would go to a neurologist who specializes in the brain. In much the same way, senior citizens need to go to attorneys who are familiar with the specific legal issues faced by that population.” Even the firm’s offices are structured to support senior citizens. “Everything is on one level, with easy accessibility, large aisles, and comfortable surroundings.”

This holistic approach is a cornerstone of her firm. “We offer a free 30-minute consultation for all new clients. Our focus is to figure out solutions, preserve assets, and negotiate issues throughout the family dynamic,” Catherine says. Because family members are usually involved, customers come from across the country. Through their discussions with clients and family members, they have learned of many widely held misconceptions about Medicaid, end-of-life items, and estate issues. They work with their clients to address these misconceptions and make recommendations. “Client needs are our number one concern, and we make sure that our customers’ goals are paramount in

our work. Clients are part of the team.” Since opening its doors, Elder Law has served more than 3,000 clients.

Legal counseling in any field can be challenging because it may involve government agencies, changing policies, and new procedures. Having a firm that specializes in elder law makes it easier. Attorneys and staff are dedicated to keeping up to date on these issues.

“I have had seniors come into our offices feeling hopeless, worried that they have to liquidate everything to get health care but still wanting to support loved ones. They are confused about what Medicare and Medicaid provide. They think they have to suffer. They don’t know that alternatives exist—that there are ways to take care of their needs.” Catherine and her team take great satisfaction in helping these clients find the best ways to move forward.

Satisfied clients are a hallmark of the firm. Thomas and Jeana Ridder needed to set up a trust for their son, who has special needs. “Catherine made us very comfortable during this process,”Thomas says. “She is incredibly knowledgeable and patiently went over every aspect of the paperwork so we completely understood what could have been a complicated matter. She absolutely knows what she is doing and has been there for us, speaking to us on our level to make sure we understood everything. You can tell she likes what she is doing and is committed to elder law.”

Elder Law of Omaha is located at 2813 South 88th Street. To learn more about their services or to set up your free 30-minute consultation, call the office at 402-614-6400 or visit them online at elderlawomaha.com.

Members.MD Concierge Medicine Happy Doctors, Healthy Patients

Members.MD is concierge health care, modeled personally for you. Dr. Suzan Crabb, the newest MD on staff, loves how the concierge model gives physicians more time to interact with each patient. Dr. Crabb doesn’t just get stats and bloodwork, she asks her patients what they’re eating, how they’re exercising, if there are stresses at work or at home. She has time to talk to patients about health concerns that can be influenced by emotional and situational factors, and she never has to feel rushed.

At Members.MD, physicians can really enjoy practicing medicine! That makes for happy doctors and happy staff who love what they’re doing…and that tends to create happier patients. They are happier, because they do not have to deal with phone trees but get a person, happier that refills get taken care of in a timely manner, happier that they can actually talk to their doctor, happier that they can get in and be seen the day they call or the next day.

“People are happy here,” says Dr. Crabb. “Concierge medicine is all about service. We want to provide whatever services we can to make our patients’ lives better. Our whole message is about being personal. It’s about developing relationships.” Dr. Crabb and her colleagues at Members.MD take health

care personally, managing disease and integrating prevention into the picture. “Our focus on prevention means we don’t just want to be your doctor when you’re sick, we want to be your doctor when you’re okay,” says President Ryne Bessmer.

“The most important thing about concierge medicine is time,” Dr. Crabb adds. “Because we have a limited number of patients, we have more time to spend with them, more time to

hunt down test results and discuss them with patients myself and more time to communicate with specialists on my patients’ behalf. In my traditional practice, I would often have medical assistants do all of this because I didn’t have time. That’s the beauty of this practice! I am completely able to take care of my patients in an unhurried, unstressful way. The busiest doctor in our practice has about one third of the patient load that the typical primary care doctor has here in Omaha.”

Members.MD patient Katherine thinks the relationship is worth the cost. “The communication and relationship I have with my physician is unlike anything I’ve experienced before,” she says. Annual memberships start at $3,000, often broken down into monthly installments. Members can choose to have their bills filed to insurance, as with other practices, or to bypass their insurance company and pay direct. Paying direct can save patients money because the rates are highly discounted—Members.MD has relationships with local specialists, imaging clinics, and labs, which allows them to offer services at discounted prices.

“The membership fee is the reason we can keep our practice panel small,” Dr. Crabb says. “It’s about what’s important to people and where they want to spend their money.”There’s no charge to meet the physicians and learn about concierge medicine, however. “If someone is interested in what concierge medicine is and who we are at Members.MD, they should come in,” Dr. Crabb offers. “We set up meet and greets, so if there’s a physician you’re interested in meeting, you can come in and learn more.”

An unhurried visit with the doctor is definitely a benefit of

concierge medicine, but it’s not the only one. The after-hours access to your medical team can also help you manage your health. “Lots of people have multiple physicians and specialists,” Ryne points out. “If you think of a question later, it is easy to reach their own personal physician outside of office hours.” There’s also a HIPPA-compliant app available where patients can text their docs directly. Gone are the days of delayed diagnoses or treatments, long wait times, rushed visits, and lingering questions that need more explanation.

Dr. Crabb recently read an article about physician burnout that predicted an imminent shortage in primary care physicians. The problem is not with the physicians, Dr. Crabb says, but with the current medical model. “No one has really figured out how to fix this system. I know amazing doctors who are brilliant and compassionate—they just don’t have a lot of time with each patient. The really busy physician who’s seeing 40 patients a day might not be able to read every report!” She can see how the unhurried model of concierge medicine can reduce burnout and keep doctors in practice longer.

“I have a patient who likes to say that I’m her general contractor,” Dr. Crabb says with a smile. “My job is to coordinate care, and that means making sure that all the doctors involved are getting the information. I really enjoy that part of the process—being the general contractor!”

If you’d like to learn more about concierge medicine or meet the team at Members.MD, call Abbey at 402-983-9439 to coordinate. Visit them online at members.md. The practice is located at 11810 Nicholas Street, Suite 101, in Omaha.

Pet Care When You Can’t Be There Boarding, Sitting, and More

It’s normal to feel some trepidation when you have to leave your pet in someone else’s care, whether it’s for hours, days, or weeks at a time. Fortunately, there are professionals ready to care for your furry friends—the trick is to find the right pro for your needs. Let’s take a look at some types of short-term and long-term pet care.

Doggy day care can be a big relief for pet owners who work long hours and have energetic, social pets. It’s what it sounds like: a facility where you can drop off your dog during the day so they can socialize with other dogs instead of tearing up your home. Expect proof of vaccination requirements (this protects employees and animals alike). Be sure to tour the facility in advance with your dog, keeping an eye out for cleanliness and happy pets.

Pet boarding is when your pet stays at a facility while you are away (on a business trip, on vacation, or even after a surgical treatment that leaves you temporarily unable to care for your pet). Boarding facilities generally provide space for your pet to be alone as well as opportunities to socialize. Some facilities offer extras like bathing and grooming. Ask friends with pets for recommendations and look for local places online. When you find a facility that suits you, arrange for a tour. Come to the tour prepared with questions. What is the ratio of caregivers to pets? Can caregivers administer medications or accommodate special diets? If your pet becomes ill or injured, what veterinary services are available? If they offer special services, how much do they cost?

Find out what the facility provides and what you’ll need to bring along from home, like bed, leash, favorite toy, food, feeding and water bowls, and the like. Check the size and condition of the sleeping quarters and find out how often pets are fed, exercised, and taken outside. Some facilities offer pet cams that will show you how your pet is doing any time of day or night.

Many boarding facilities offer day care, as well. This is convenient if your travel schedule is irregular. Your pet can enjoy the familiarity of the same facility no matter how long you’ll be gone. Find out about the specific drop-off and pickup hours.

Some boarding and day care facilities for dogs also accept cats. As cats are more self-sufficient than dogs, you may want to consider other options for your feline friend. That said, there are also facilities that are cats-only, which might be a very relaxing vacation for your cat. In some places, cats from the same family can board together.

Pet sitters come in three types: those who periodically visit your pet at your home, those who stay with your pet in your home, and those who take your pet to stay at their home. Your pet’s needs will determine which kind of pet sitter would be the best fit.

A pet sitter who just visits your pet is likely the most cost-efficient option and allows your pet to stay in the comfort of their own home. Dog visitors can come a few times a day

to provide food and water and to take your dog outside for relief, exercise, and play. Cat visitors don’t need to come as often, since cats don’t go outside for relief. They can come daily to check food and water, empty the litterbox, and play with or brush your cat. The frequency of visits determines the cost. If your pet has special needs, be sure to ask if the sitter can meet them.

A longer-term option is a pet sitter who moves into your home with your pet and keeps the routines you have established for feeding, exercise, and play time. This is a great longer-term option for less social animals. It has the added benefit of house-sitting—that is, your home will be lived in while you’re gone. A pet sitter who takes your pet to their home may have other people’s pets with them at the same time. This option is best for pets who play well with others.

A fairly new service for pet owners is emerging: pet concierges. Just like a concierge at a hotel, a pet concierge has worked hard to compile a list of service providers. These providers have likely been interviewed and background-checked, on your behalf, saving you a great deal of time. Another recent development in pet care is liability insurance and bonding. Veterinarians have it; pet sitters are realizing they need it, too. It offers protection for all involved (insurance protects them; bonding protects you).

The 2022 Stock Market

TGIF!

The kindest thing to be said about the 2022 stock market is, “Thank God It’s Finished.” Depending upon which index you choose, the market ended the year down between 10 and 35 percent. The bond market had a similar experience, with a decline in the 15 percent range. The market peaked on January 1, and it was all downhill from there. Instead of crying over spilled milk, I suggest taking the lemons-to-lemonade approach: review 2022 and learn what we can from it.

The market’s performance reflected several major geo-political events. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted global energy markets and provided a hefty tailwind to the worsening US inflation problem. The lagging impact of the lockdown during the pandemic created supply chain issues across the globe. American reliance on Chinese raw materials for the pharmaceutical and tech industries compounded the problem and dampened US economic growth because China is our largest trade partner.

Then, there were the Wall Street professionals. They got it all wrong…well, sort of all wrong. The mighty forecasters of Wall Street did an excellent job of predicting the earnings of the S&P 500: somewhere between 5 and 7 percent. In a perfect world, this implies a reasonable gain in the market. Obviously, Mr. Market strongly disagreed. Even a blind squirrel can see the whopping discrepancy between Wall Street’s prognostication and Mr. Market’s response.

As the year progressed, the professionals predicted doom and gloom, while Mom and Pop respectfully disagreed, remaining optimistic about the future. In 2022, Mom and Pop added over $100 billion to their mutual fund accounts at the big three discount brokerage firms. This is the largest cash infusion since the middle of the dot-com bubble in 2000. They leaned on the “put your money where your mouth is” adage and self-directed their portfolios with a long-term perspective.

Contrast Mom and Pop’s activity with that of the gurus of Wall Street. Hedge funds sold stocks and increased their cash positions from 1 percent to over 10 percent. This indicates that the crème de la crème of Wall Street take a dimmer view of the market’s prospects than do the citizens of Main Street. History, however, is on Mom and Pop’s side, because around 20 percent of the hedge funds go bankrupt every year. Mom and Pop’s number for the same data point is close to zero.

On the other hand, Mom and Pop and the professionals alike were caught off guard by the decline of bond values that followed the Fed’s actions to fight inflation by raising interest rates. Since approximately the beginning of time, Wall Street and academia have preached that proper diversification requires some money in stock and some money in bonds. The older you get, the more

heavily your portfolio should be weighted toward bonds. The Wall Street gurus who design robo-accounts have made this premise a cornerstone of their construction handbook. The problem? History has proven that when the market plummets, all asset classes turn to into mush.

Mr. Market was particularly rough on the big cap tech stocks that dominate the Nasdaq index and play a significant role in the S&P 500. They had acceptable earnings, and Mr. Market rewarded their success by crushing their stock prices by as much as 64 percent—another smack in the mouth for the Wall Street prediction giants. The net impact of this was a major disconnect between the three major market indexes: the Dow, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq. While they all ended the year in negative territory, the lack of tech exposure in the Dow softened its decline.

What we can learn from this is that major market downturns occur on a regular basis and remain beyond the ability of Wall Street to predict. Prior to 2022, the big tech names like Google, Apple, and Microsoft were the pillars of the market advance. Their course reversals in 2020 made them the cornerstone of the collapse. The large decline in the bond market reinforces the reality that when things are the darkest, there are no safe havens.

Be not faint of heart! A great man once said, “This, too, shall pass.” Investors should take solace in the fact that the professionals are pessimistic about the market’s prospects for 2023. To quote Harry Truman, “Economists have predicted 10 out of the last seven recessions.” I would add to this the advice of Jack Bogle, who invented the index fund: “Forget the needles; buy the haystack.”

The Mysterious and Captivating Lotus

The Flower That Never Dies

Yes, yes, like half of the country, I watched the streaming series The White Lotus and became a little bit obsessed with the beauty and symbolism of the lotus flower. Something as beautiful as this miracle flower is indeed mysterious and has captivated many people over the years. The lotus is the national flower of both India and Vietnam, and this aquatic flower bloomer can rise out of the deepest and thickest mud in the most delicate of ways.

Let me just say that this flower is amazing! First of all, the plant is almost entirely edible, from the stems to the rhizomes. The flower petals open in the morning and close at night, and they have air-pockets that retain the plant’s buoyancy on a body of water. The lotus has been used in medicine for centuries.

Perhaps most fascinating of all is the life cycle of the lotus. With its roots firmly locked in mud, the flower gets submerged into the water at night and re-blooms the next morning, all sparkly clean and gorgeous. This is the reason that, in many cultures, the lotus signifies re-birth, re-emergence, and spiritual enlightenment. As with other flowers, different colors of lotus flowers have different cultural meanings. The white lotus signifies purity and tranquility; the yellow signifies openness and hospitality; the pink symbolizes a spiritual journey and enlightenment.

In Hindu culture, it is believed that gods and goddesses ride on the lotus flower. Buddhists believe that Buddha appeared atop a floating lotus and that his first footsteps on Earth left a trail of lotus blossoms. If you stop and think about this flower’s ability to resurrect each morning, as beautiful as it was the day before, you can start to understand why this unwavering flower is held in such high esteem. It also seems to live forever! The lotus can survive under some pretty harsh conditions, and it has been documented that lotus seeds can survive droughts for more than 200 years and still be able to geminate. I am truly impressed!

Lotus flowers date so far back in origin that they even survived the last Ice Age. The Ice Age was a time of great geological change on the planet, and most plants in the northern hemisphere became extinct during that time.

Frankly, this flower sounds somewhat magical. You can see why it is so widely revered.

As a traditional medicinal component, the lotus seed is used in the treatment of inflammation, cancer, diuretics, muscle spasms, skin diseases, and much more. Apparently, lotus seeds have been used as a functional food since ancient times all over Asia. The seeds can be consumed raw, ground, roasted, or boiled into a syrup or paste after being peeled. Lotus seeds are a highly nutritious food, packed with protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Some people may be intimidated by the idea of planting a lotus, but they are actually fairly simple to grow. I am imagining these blooming in the pond we are going to build this year, and I love the image! You may have called these beauties water lilies if you have seen them in someone’s pond, but that may have been a different family of plants. If you’ve decided that you might want to try your hand at growing a water lotus, here are a few suggestions.

You can grow these glorious delights as a rhizome or from seed. The soil in the container you are using should always have at least four inches of water over it.

The lotus has roots called tubers (rhizomes), and they are very fragile. Handle with much care and do not break off the pointed tip of the tuber known as the eye. Warmth is important from the beginning for the lotus. Experts suggest floating the tubers in water for two weeks in a sunny place before planting.

The location you choose for your lotus should be a sunny spot. Lotuses grow to the size of the area they are planted in, so fill a deep pot with soil, leaving three to four inches remaining at the top. Set the tuber on the surface of the filled pot, embedded slightly, and weighed down with some small stones. Lower it into the pond (the pot should be six to twelve inches below the water’s surface).

In most parts of the United States, the lotus flower will bloom in June and July. As the season progresses, yellowed foliage should be removed. Don’t forget the fertilizer. You can also grow these inside your home—you just need room for a water feature!

Colorectal Cancer Awareness You Can Reduce Your Risk

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and a great time to learn what

can be done to reduce

the risk of colorectal cancer (the third most common form of cancer). More than 150,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year in the United States. One in 25 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that survival rates are greatly improved by good access to screening and treatment options.

The key to reducing our risk is to begin screening tests at age 45. Screening can find warning signs that can lead to prevention. If cancer is found at an early stage, treatment can begin when it is most effective.

Unfortunately, there are often no early warning signs. Therefore, the best way forward is to have regular screening tests, on a schedule determined by your doctor, instead of waiting until symptoms appear. This is much like the approach to breast cancer, where regular screenings can catch a lesion in the early stages, when treatments work best. If you do have symptoms, such as persistent diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, or blood in stools, seek medical attention right away to rule out the possibility of colorectal cancer and to identify the source of the symptoms.

Screening techniques include testing stool samples, various scopes using a lighted tube, or computerized x-ray exams of the colon. In terms of invasiveness, techniques range from a test

done in the privacy of home to a medical professional looking inside the colon with a light and camera. Unsurprisingly, many of us feel squeamish about the thought of collecting our own stool sample or undergoing a scope exam of the colon. We must agree, however, that a little awkwardness is worth the reward of avoiding surgery, radiation, or chemo.

Home tests of stools are the least invasive and most convenient. A kit is used to collect samples, which are then returned according to directions. Depending upon the type of test, some look for evidence of microscopic blood. These tests typically need to be done more often than some others. If hidden blood is detected, then a more invasive exam will be needed. A newer home stool test looks for cells with certain mutations. These are called DNA tests.

Sigmoidoscopy employs a thin, flexible tube to examine the rectum and the lower two feet of the colon. During the procedure, the doctor can take a biopsy or remove polyps.

If polyps are found, then a colonoscopy is recommended to examine the rest of the colon.

Many of us are familiar with the colonoscopy screening exam. It does require fasting as well as “prep” that includes clearing out the colon before the exam. Usually done under light sedation by a gastrointestinal specialist, the exam is very effective in spotting problems. Tools may be employed through the tube to remove polyps or to collect material for biopsy and other laboratory testing.

Newer CT colonography technology does not involve going into the colon with a scope; it uses x-ray and computer imaging to detect areas of concern. Like colonoscopy, it does involve prep such as fasting and use of a laxative, but it does not require sedation. If polyps or other issues are found, a traditional colonoscopy will likely follow.

Heredity plays a part in your risk for colorectal cancer, so it is helpful to know any family history and perhaps undergo genetic testing for this cancer. With screening, colorectal cancer is highly preventable and highly treatable.

Lifestyle factors such as eating red meat and using alcohol or tobacco may increase your risk of developing colorectal cancer. Obesity and sedentary lifestyle are believed to raise risk as well. A dietitian may propose better food choices and a fitness program.

It is reassuring to know that oncologists have a variety of effective treatments, both local and systemic, for colorectal cancer. Local treatment involves dealing with the tumor without affecting the whole body. Examples are surgery, ablation, or radiation. These are often used in the early stages of cancer but can be used in other situations.

Systemic treatments involve drugs that are given by mouth or IV and travel throughout the body. Chemo is one such treatment. It can be given before surgery, after surgery, or in later stages, when cure isn’t likely but symptoms can be eased.

Newer treatments include targeted drugs that home in on certain cell changes that cause colorectal cancer. Immunotherapy involves medication that encourages one’s immune system to distinguish and destroy cancer cells.

Research and trials are ongoing to find new and better treatments as well as possible vaccines to prevent such cancers. Go get screened!

Receiving Graciously

Don’t Just Be a Giver!

I love to give to people…gifts, hugs, laughter, love. I have felt this way since I was a little girl. It has always warmed my heart to give to others. (My nephew, Jesse, calls me Generous Jan.) For many years, the other side of that coin made me very uncomfortable. I loved giving but I didn’t like receiving…just about anything and everything.

“Until we can receive with an open heart, we are never really giving with an open heart.” —Brene

Since I have been married to Manny, I have been learning how to be a better receiver. Manny is the most giving person I have ever met. In the beginning of our marriage, I rarely let Manny do anything for me. After all, I was a liberated woman! I didn’t need a man to open my doors, pull out my chair at restaurants, help me with my coat, and so on. That was just…well… old-fashioned! Guess what? This outlook caused challenges in our relationship.

“My ideal man is faithful, honest, and a gentleman who knows how to treat women.” —Irina

Manny and I had many conversations about this. My husband loves being a gentleman. He opens doors not only for

me—he also does it for total strangers. He has done this ever since I have known him. I have watched him race ahead to open the doors to help both women and men. I can tell it makes him happy.

“When you graciously receive, you give others the gift of giving.” —Ray

About two years ago, I had a very smart lady explain to me that when we don’t allow others to give to us, when we don’t accept what is given to us, we are stealing their joy. When I heard this, it really opened my eyes! I hadn’t considered that receiving is just as important as giving. Learning how to be a gracious receiver has made me kinder, gentler, and happier!

If you can see yourself in this column, please take it to heart. Give it a shot. If someone gives you a compliment, don’t poohpooh it. Accept it. Say thank you. If someone gives you a gift, don’t say, “You shouldn’t have.” Accept it. Say thank you. If your significant other opens the door for you, don’t say, “I can do it myself.” Say thank you and walk through the door. Try it! I think you’ll like it.

“Gentlemen, how can we expect to make a woman happy if we insist on treating her like a woman? Treat her like a lady.

Opinions and Attitudes We Are All Teachers…and Students

When I travel, I use the radio to keep me company. The FM stations are my first choice; when they are out of range, I scan the AM stations. I take what I can get…scanning the channels to find whatever is available: music, news, weather, local events, commentary…I learn from it all!

Listener-call-in programs are interesting. Most of them have a theme, be it sports, current events, community activities, local entertainment, or music. All provide a narrative on the interests of the local folks.

My most recent trip was to visit my daughter and grandsons in the southwest. My route takes me through seven states. A round trip takes six days and four nights…usually in four different cities…and about 48 hours of driving. On this trip, radio topics included football playoffs (both college and professional), national and local politics (of course…they’re hard to avoid), and a variety of other subjects. Listener call-in programs provide the most variety of attitudes and opinions about each subject. When the call-in programs get too heavy, I hit the scan button and look for something lighter.

Many of the FM stations are connected to nearby colleges and universities, and they provide a variety of programming. I find interview programs the most interesting because subjects range from unusual experiences to common occurrences. One can learn a lot from listening to the opinions expressed by others. One fascinating program, which aired as I was driving

through New Mexico, was an interview with an area musician about Native American drum rhythms and themes. The speaker explained how the tempo of the drums, the dancing, and the chanting each influence the others. It was enchanting!

I like listening to music when I’m driving…it relaxes me. My mind is free to ponder anything that comes to mind without distracting me from the business of driving. I’ve listened to operas and concerts, musical scores from movies and plays, and collections from individual artists. Genres range across the spectrum: country western, classic rock, rap, gospel, folk, and jazz. Some of these I listen to longer than others.

All of these programs present information and opinions on a variety of topics. My horizons are extended beyond what I experience in my own day-to-day life. My attitudes are refreshed. In this way, we are all teachers...and students. Our attitudes and preferences on different subjects are generally passed on to our children. Our attitudes are often based on those of our parents but have also been influenced by experiences we’ve had as adults. My mother once said she didn’t want to be a “rusty gate;” she was always willing to experience something new. I encourage my kids and grandkids to do the same…to expand their experiences and open their attitudes…to not be afraid of things new or different. What are you teaching?

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:

“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!

The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!”

Vehicle Insurance

Everybody Needs It!

Insurance. We all know we need it, whether we are driving a Lexus or a motor scooter. The expense is necessary, but is there a way to improve the insurance experience—how we figure out what we need, how we find the best policy, and how much it has to cost? My first suggestion is to shop around for vehicle insurance. When you shop around, you can ask questions about state requirements, what the policy covers, and what would cause your premium to increase. If you do not have the time or the energy for shopping around, you can always hire an independent insurance agent to do it for you.

An important question about insurance is: Do I have enough coverage? Regulations vary by state, but there are coverages that all drivers must have. Liability insurance is a must because it covers bodily injury and property damage if you are at fault in an accident. Collision insurance pays for damage your vehicle sustains in an accident. Comprehensive insurance protects a vehicle from non-accident damage, like from natural disaster or theft.

It may not surprise you that some people actually drive without insurance. To protect yourself from them, you may want to consider uninsured motorist coverage. This coverage will pay for medical bills and car repairs with no worries.

You may have heard of “no-fault” insurance, also known as personal injury protection (PIP). This type of insurance covers medical expenses incurred in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. “Full coverage” is a car insurance policy that includes both comprehensive and collision insurance, along with your particular state’s minimum liability requirements.

To get started on an insurance quote, you will need to provide your personal information (address, date of birth, occupation, driver’s license, and marital status). You will need information about your vehicle, such as mileage, date of purchase, and VIN number. You also need to provide your driving history, including violations and tickets over the last five years and any completed driving courses.

Another important question about insurance is: Am I getting all the discounts I can possibly get? Discounts run the gamut, including multi-car discounts, safe driver discounts, low-mileage discounts, senior citizen discounts, and good student discounts. There are many things you can do to bring down your costs by making yourself eligible for discounts.

First of all, maintain a good driving record—that’s always worth some money on an insurance policy. You can also demonstrate your commitment to driving safety by signing up for a safe driving program or taking an accident prevention course. Improving your credit score, though not directly related to driving, is another way to potentially qualify for a discount on insurance.

It is imperative that you know what your financial responsibilities will be so you can plan ahead. Know how much your annual deductible will be and how much you’ll pay in monthly premiums. Once you have insurance that you are satisfied with, check every year to see if you qualify for any new discounts. Always ask!

Teen drivers are expensive to insure, and that’s no surprise. Their lack of experience behind the wheel means they’re more likely to make an error that leads to an accident (or the failure to avoid one). That said, insurers know that teen drivers are on the road and need to be covered. Some companies will let you list a teen with a learner’s permit on your policy until they become fully licensed. At that point, insurers may offer discounts for teens who complete a drivers education course or even for those who get good grades. After all, if they’re responsible in the classroom, they’re likely to be responsible on the road!

All vehicles need to be insured, including recreational vehicles (RVs), motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, boats, and jet skis. Talk to your insurance agent about all your vehicles—there’s often a bundling discount for insuring multiple vehicles on the same policy. As with cars and trucks, all drivers need to carry liability insurance, but comprehensive and collision is up to you.

Insurance is based on the replacement cost of the vehicle, so a used car is usually cheaper to insure than a new one. If you drive a car that is still being paid for, you might want to consider guaranteed auto protection insurance. This means the insurance company will pay for the dollar amount of the “gap” between the balance of financing and what your vehicle is actually worth at the time of an accident.

Insurance pays—for our liabilities, our injuries, our property, and our peace of mind. Talk to your independent agent or have your questions prepared when you shop around!

The Grout Doctor

Reviving Tile, Grout, and Stone

Many homeowners are fortunate enough to have tile and stone components in their homes, commonly as flooring, showers, countertops, backsplashes, and fireplaces. Over time, these previously lovely materials may become dull, or their grout can become discolored, eroded, or damaged. If you have tile or stone that has lost its luster or grout that needs attention, The Grout Doctor may be the way to bring them back to life.

The Grout Doctor offers several solutions for reviving your home’s tile, grout, and stone. Grout and caulking services include grout cleaning and sealing, grout recoloring, grout repair or replacement, and caulking or re-caulking.

Frank Allen spent several years in the restaurant industry before deciding to pursue a business of his own. He explored several options and found the right fit in 2008 with The Grout Doctor. Frank and his wife, Jennifer, locally own and operate the business, which is part of a nationwide network of providers. They provide services in Omaha and its surrounding communities.

Once-attractive tile may look deceptively ugly if the grout is old, discolored, damaged, or missing in places. Clients may assume that the surface should be replaced. As Frank explains, that’s often not the case. “We might be able to clean and restore these products at a more reasonable cost than replacement.” A deep cleaning, grout recoloring, or regrouting can bring the tile back to life and restore its beauty. Deep cleaning removes grease, oil, dirt, and other contaminants. Cleaning also allows Frank to review the grout’s condition to see if additional services are needed.

Sometimes, deep cleaning is not enough to remove staining. In these cases, Frank can apply a pigmented sealer to the grout to match the original color—or he can lighten or darken the color to create a new look. In situations where grout is not salvageable, the old grout can be removed, and new grout installed with existing tile or stone.

Frank stresses the importance of sealing grout in floors and showers. Since grout is porous, it absorbs water, stains, and bacteria. Sealing preserves grout, makes cleaning easier, repels moisture, and prevents mold and mildew from growing. However, not all sealers are equal or appropriate for all grouts. The two main types of grout are cement-based sanded grout and epoxy-based unsanded grout, and it is essential to use the proper sealer. “You must

use an appropriate sealer for specific projects, or it won’t last for longer than three months,” Frank states.

Glass showers provide a sleek look but are often hard to maintain. The Grout Doctor can apply EnduroShield, guaranteed for 10 years, which makes cleaning easier, repels water and oil, and resists etching and staining. This protective coating may also be used on tile, grout, and stainless steel.

The Grout Doctor uses proprietary cleaners. “Each cleaner is made for a specific application, and we use commercial products that are more durable than those available for consumer use,” Frank says. “This means we get a better, longer-lasting result.” He also shares that their cleaning products do not produce harmful fumes and are safe to use inside homes.

Frank’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “I am upfront about it if I cannot fix an issue, and I will not accept a job if I can’t guarantee the work will last,” he says. “I get paid when the job is done and the customer is happy.” He says that his customers often remark that they would have had the work done years ago if they had known how easy and inexpensive it would be, especially when it comes to cleaning and recoloring floor grout. Frank’s customers place a lot of trust in him, and he appreciates that faith. “I have a lot of experience, I’m a one-person operation, and I do not have crews going in and out of homes, which customers appreciate.”

Frank enjoys meeting people and finding solutions to their problems. “People may think something needs to be replaced, but we might be able to fix it and save them thousands of dollars, which is very rewarding,” he concludes. His customers agree—that’s quite the reward!

Fala’s Treasures

& Coffeehouse

Gifts, Treats, and Good Eats

Jackie started out with an online boutique but quickly realized she needed a brick-and-mortar business where customers could see and touch the merchandise. The concept of combining coffee and shopping came to her from her own traditions of shopping with her daughters. Coffee would always be part of the experience, either before, after, or in the middle. Why not do the shopping and the coffee drinking in the same place?

In 2016, the opportunity arose to acquire a building one block off the main street in Elkhorn. The re-creation was not easy, but Jackie was up to the challenge. She

opened the coffeehouse first, in August of 2016, and continued to make improvements as the business grew. Today, Fala’s offers the largest coffee drink menu in the metro area. The boutique section has a wide array of great gift ideas, including stuffed animals and baby gifts, coffees and teas, candles, fun socks, and much more. Jackie says much of the merchandise also benefits charitable organizations.

Since 2016, owner Jackie Schmidt has been bringing this delightful atmosphere to customers who are looking for a combination of boutique shopping and delicious coffee and food. Doesn’t that sound like all of us?

Fala’s opened the cozy dining area in December of 2019, and it’s a great place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. Jackie loves creating culinary delights for her customers, from delicious avocado toast to scrumptious baked goods and pastries. How about a grown-up grilled cheese or cilantro grilled shrimp wrap? The menu selections are unique and delicious, and everything is made from scratch. In addition to the food, Fala’s has craft cocktails and a unique selection of wines from around the world, which you can enjoy by the glass or purchase to take home.

Jackie gives the impression that she runs her business the way she would entertain in her home, always coming up with new ideas for customers and friends to enjoy. In February, she is introducing Girls Tuesday Taco Night, a fun evening staged as a girls night out with tacos, discounted drinks, and a special drawing at the end of the evening. She is preparing to offer yoga sessions and possibly Zumba. Super Sunday Fun Day is back by popular request. It features specially prepared brunch items, like eggs Benedict and Jackie’s special sausage biscuits and gravy. Fala’s also caters. Jackie creates beautiful charcuterie boards and is known as the Chips and Dips Queen.

“Today was our first time at Fala’s, but it will not be our last,” says customer Rick R. “We honestly felt like we had come home to family after a long absence. Everyone was friendly and helpful. However, the highlight was the food. My wife had the avocado toast and I had the breakfast burrito and it was amazing. Their entire menu is fantastic.”

Fala’s is a true adventure to explore. There is a delightful private party room that can be reserved for small meetings,

book clubs, or birthday parties for children or adults. Customer Kathryn comments, “Such a wonderful shop and restaurant! I can’t say enough about how helpful and accommodating they were for my sister’s holiday gathering. Lots to see and wonderful food.”

Owning and running your own business is not for the faint at heart, Jackie acknowledges. Like many small business owners, one of the greatest challenges Jackie faces is staffing. As a mom and pop business, she says, it is difficult to compete for employees with the franchises. She relies on the personal things she can offer potential employees, like greater flexibility in scheduling and always being treated with respect (as she would want her girls to be treated). She believes that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, and she puts that belief into action by hiring young people with special needs. She is always looking for reliable people who enjoy working with customers.

Every morning, Jackie wakes up with the goal of putting a smile on everyone’s face. “Mom and Dad taught me to be nice to everyone, no matter who they are.” She appreciates all the help and support she receives from her husband, Blaine, and her daughters, Madeline and Lydia.

Fala’s exists so that Jackie can share her Fun And Loving Atmosphere with her community. She would love the opportunity to welcome you to her shop! Fala’s Treasures and Coffee House is located 2627 North 205th Street, in Elkhorn. For current hours, find them on Facebook or check out their website falaselkhorn.com. Hardscaping Trends

Create an Outdoor Oasis

Maximizing outdoor spaces is more than a trend; it is a new way of living. Outdoor spaces are becoming an extension of the home, expanding living space and creating an inviting environment to entertain guests. Hardscaping refers to the structural parts of outdoor renovation, like retaining walls, decks, walkways, and the like. Investing in comfortable outdoor furniture, landscaping, and accessories makes these outdoor areas comfortable and attractive.

Creating an outdoor living space is worth the investment because hardscaping increases the value of your home. Adding paved decks, stone patios, or outdoor fireplaces can transform a drab outdoor area into an inviting and luxurious living space. When you add or increase deck and patio space (so long as it’s done properly by an expert), you could recoup as much as 65 percent of your investment. That is a good incentive for creating a space in your home that you can enjoy.

Of all the outdoor improvements, adding an outdoor kitchen provides the highest return on investment, sometimes as much as 200 percent. Outdoor kitchens are all the rage right now. A Forbes poll revealed that 65 percent of homeowners cite an outdoor kitchen as the top priority when remodeling their outdoor space. An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a builtin grill with dedicated seating space, or it could include a pizza oven and bar with shades and enclosures.

A wonderful solution for those who crave an outdoor kitchen but don’t have the space for it is to merge the kitchen with the backyard. Folding glass doors and enclosed verandas provide a seamless transition between the home and yard, making both spaces feel larger. The open concept takes full advantage of natural light. It is bright and airy, with easy flow between the indoor and outdoor areas. Using similar materials and colors for the patio and indoor spaces further blends the two, creating one large space.

Another trend for cooking outdoors is the brick pizza oven. You can create delicious wood-fired pizzas, ribs, roasted vegetables, and more. The brick oven is an attractive addition to outdoor spaces and can be made in any shape or size you wish. When you add seating around it, you create a private, inviting, and stylish outdoor area to enjoy.

Privacy for your outdoor sanctuary can be achieved by adding lush greenery or bright blooms as vertical plantings. Pergolas, trellises, and even hanging baskets and mounted containers can create a green wall. When incorporated properly, they create a natural privacy screen that makes the space

feel lush instead of closed in. You can integrate water collection features for a sustainable design that is easy to maintain.

If you have an area in your yard that feels neglected, try adding a bench and a canopy for shade and then create a hardscaped pathway that leads to it. A natural stone pathway unifies your yard while adding a rustic touch and creating an inviting entrance to the area. It is a great trick for making every corner of your yard usable.

We often think of retaining walls as necessary additions because they increase the stability of sloped areas. They do increase stability, but they can also create more usable yard space while adding beauty. You can create a lovely, functional space by combining hardscaping with natural elements like shrubs, plants, and grass.

A multi-level retaining wall can include flower beds and water features. Short retaining walls can create space around a firepit, for example, while also providing seating. If seating is what you crave in your yard, consider installing a concrete seat the length of the wall. You can make it cozy with plush couch cushions and pillows. With the help of an experienced contractor, you can create a unique and luxurious outdoor area for your home.

The key to adding hardscaping to your yard is to make sure it blends with the architecture of your home. A contemporary home might benefit from sleek concrete and smooth stone steps, while a home with cottage features such as half-timber and shutters can incorporate natural stone features. Utilizing different materials and textures can create a cohesive look while drawing attention to different elements of your yard. An experienced contractor can help to create a unified look that will add value to your home.

For the perfect final touch to any hardscape design, add lighting. You can create a magical effect with the right lighting and transform your outdoor area into a nighttime oasis. Pathway and deck lights, low-voltage lights, and string lights provide a warm, inviting atmosphere. Hardscaping and lighting are a great combination for creating an outdoor living space that is functional and inviting.

New or Replacement Windows Protect and Beautify

Your Home!

There are a few basics that all houses have in common: walls, a roof, doors, and—of course—windows. Though they may seem like the least important item on this list, good quality windows are essential for many reasons, including keeping your home safe and secure, increasing your energy savings and property value, and improving your comfort.

Over time and through everyday use, your home’s windows will inevitably see a drop not only in energy efficiency but also in functionality and safety. Treads, tracks, and locks age and wear out, leaving your windows vulnerable. To ensure you are getting all the benefits you need from your windows, you may need to look into purchasing new or replacement windows.

Isn’t purchasing new windows or replacement windows the same process? The short answer is: not quite. Replacement windows are new glazing (that is, window panes) that fits into your existing window frames. Installing new, or new construction, windows is when the existing window frames are removed and replaced. As you may have guessed, replacement windows are significantly cheaper than new ones. On the other hand, new windows have the benefit of solving any problems with gaps or structural issues. New windows can also allow you to change the shape and style of your windows, should you desire.

Whether you opt to install new or replacement windows, one thing you’re going to want to keep an eye out for is the

R-value. R-value measures a window’s heat resistance and is used as an assessment of its effectiveness and efficiency. Another measurement you’ll see on new windows is the U-value, which is the inverse of the R-value. It measures heat transfer (through loss or gain, depending on the time of year) through the glass. For maximum energy efficiency, look for an R-value greater than R-5 and a U-value between 0.2 and 1.2.

If you choose new construction windows, it could be a good opportunity to change your windows’ architectural style. There are many different window styles to choose from, such as contemporary and modern styles with large, expansive glass panes; traditional home styles such as neutral-colored casement windows; craftsman-style windows made from wood or other natural materials; American farmhouse-style with tall and narrow double-hung windows; or fine old world and European-style featuring tilt-turn windows in custom shapes. Since windows aren’t replaced as frequently as style trends change, window styles have more or less followed personal taste over

current trends.

Regardless of what style is your preference, you’ll want to pick a window material that suits your needs and budget. On national average, new windows run anywhere from $180 to $2,100 per window. Vinyl, wood, cladding, and fiberglass are the most common materials, and they all have their pros and cons.

Vinyl will be the least expensive option and is suitable in most applications. However, vinyl windows are vulnerable to warping when exposed to extreme heat, and their weather stripping isn’t very durable. Wood will be more expensive up front but will retain its naturally insulating quality with regular maintenance and repainting/sealing.

Cladded windows are typically wooden windows with an aluminum, vinyl, or fiberglass layer added to the exterior. They serve to make the window more durable and reduce the frequency of having to repaint or re-seal the wood on the outside of your house. Last, but not least, is fiberglass. Fiberglass is the most expensive option. It is stronger and more resilient than vinyl but needs to be protected by paint. Fortunately, most fiberglass windows will come pre-painted by the manufacturer.

Once you’ve got your window game plan down, it’s time to think about installation and warranties. An installer who is certified through your window manufacturer is ideal. For all other cases, you’ll want to do the usual checks through places like the Better Business Bureau and get recommendations from family or friends.

Most manufacturers offer a “limited lifetime warranty,” which often applies to broken or defective parts and not the cost of labor. “Lifetime” is also typically defined as however long as the manufacturer thinks the window will hold its quality, which can range from three to five years on a low-quality window to up to 15 years or more.

Of course, to make sure your windows last as long as they’re supposed to, you’ll want to keep up with regular maintenance. Things like inspecting your windows annually, paying close attention to the caulking, taking note of imperfections (especially in wood), and cleaning and lubricating the window tracks are all highly recommended.

No matter how you choose to go about it, making sure your windows are working to keep you (and your savings) safe and comfortable is always a smart investment.

Estate Planning Plan Ahead to Protect Your Family

Many people focus time and energy on ensuring their well-being through diet, exercise, and financial fitness. However, an essential component often overlooked or delayed is estate planning. According to Caring.com,“More than 50 percent of Americans think that estate planning is at least somewhat important, but only 33 percent have a will or living trust.”

An estate consists of everything you own, including cars, homes, bank accounts, investments, and personal property. Becoming an adult, marrying, buying a home, and having children are all good reasons for an estate plan or at least a will. An estate plan ensures that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. If you die without a will, state law determines what happens to your assets and who distributes them. Additionally, the assets are frozen until released by the court. Review your estate plan every few years or in the event of a significant life change.

What is the difference between a will and an estate plan? A will provides instructions for the distribution of assets after someone dies and specifies the estate executor, beneficiaries, and terms for assets. A will may also provide instructions for the care of minor children. An estate plan provides directions for the distribution of assets upon death and the management of health and financial decisions if one is incapacitated during their life. It includes documents such as a will, living will, trust agreement, durable power of attorney, and health care power of attorney.

There are several items to consider when constructing a will. You will need to choose an executor and beneficiaries. An executor is legally responsible for managing assets, paying debt, and distributing property to heirs. Select a guardian if you have minor children. Bank accounts, life insurance policies, and real estate may already have named beneficiaries. Keeping this in mind when writing a will is crucial to avoid confusion and ensure consistency.

A living will guides end-of-life medical treatments you may or may not desire if you are at the end of a terminal illness or are permanently unconscious. Such treatments include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, tube feeding, dialysis, medication, and organ donation. Having a living will protects your loved ones from having to make difficult decisions during a distressing time and eliminates confusion or disagreement about how to handle your care.

A trust is a legal document in which a trustee holds assets on behalf of beneficiaries. A trust can include assets such as cash, investments, real estate, personal belongings, and business interests.

In a revocable or living trust, the individual who created the trust may change its terms or dissolve it at any time. The individual may serve as trustee during their life and name a successor to take over when they die or if they can no longer manage it themselves. An irrevocable trust, on the other hand, is difficult to alter without the consent of its beneficiaries or a court order.

Why choose one type of trust over the other? A revocable trust may be changed or dissolved at any time, assets may be removed, and the assets avoid probate when you die. However, the assets are subject to estate taxes upon death and are not protected against lawsuits or creditors. With an irrevocable trust, assets are not part of a taxable estate upon death. This type of trust also shields assets from creditors and lawsuits. The kind of trust appropriate for you depends on your financial situation.

Powers of attorney give authority to another person (agent) to act on your behalf in different situations. Specific powers of attorney allow an agent to handle particular tasks, generally temporarily, such as paying bills or selling a home. General powers of attorney provide an agent with extensive authority to handle all financial and legal matters. Durable powers of attorney can provide limited or extensive authority to address financial and legal issues. The agent maintains authority if you become mentally or physically unable to manage your affairs. A health care power of attorney allows an agent to oversee your medical care and make decisions if you become incapacitated.

Although many do-it-yourself tools are available, hiring the proper professionals to help with estate planning can save time and money in the long run. State laws vary, and professionals like attorneys and financial planners can help you navigate the complex laws and tax rules to ensure you have an estate plan tailored to your specific situation. You will have peace of mind, knowing that your estate will be handled according to your wishes.

Let’s Be Vulnerable A Sign of Courage

So, you’ve been hurt—badly. Perhaps it was a dear friend, a coworker, or a family member who hurt you. We’ve all been there. And, as we all know, the shoe has also been on the other foot. We have all done or said something that we knew was wrong the second it happened. What now?

“A sincere apology is the super glue of life. It can repair just about anything.” —Lynn

Many of us are not very good at offering an authentic apology. It’s a skill and an art! In the past, when I hurt someone, I would know I had done something wrong. There was no denying that I was at fault, but boy did I hate the idea of saying I’m sorry! Back in those days, I would find myself apologizing…but with an excuse tacked on at the end.“I’m sorry, I know I was wrong, but….”

Being able to look someone in the eye and own your mistake takes lots of courage. Excuses do nothing to repair our mistakes. In fact, I think all they do is dig a bigger hole for us to claw our way out of!

“Never

ruin an apology with an excuse.”

Why do we feel it is important to have someone apologize to us? I believe we want to communicate to others that we have been hurt or

disrespected. We want them to accept responsibility for their behavior, and we want to stop it from happening again. The most important thing, though? An apology is an important step that is necessary to reconcile the relationship.

“A genuine apology is like an eleventh-hour rain on a dusty crop. Grossly overdue, but miraculously just in time.” —

The people in our lives who hurt us are the people who we really care for. If we didn’t love them, it wouldn’t hurt so much! As soon as I came to terms with this reality, it became much easier for me to offer an authentic, sincere apology. I do not believe that anyone who loves us wants to hurt us. Speaking for myself, I know that this is true. The problem is that many hurtful things that others do…or that we do… are not meant to be hurtful. At times, though, we do hurt others, and they hurt us.

“Apologies require vulnerability.”

It’s okay to be vulnerable. It’s okay to admit our mistakes. It’s okay to apologize. It will make us stronger by stopping the trauma…and it will make our relationships healthier. And that’s all good!
