Publisher’s Notes

Happy Independence Day! What a wonderful holiday we all get to celebrate this month. The 4th lands on a Monday, so many of us will make it a fourday weekend to enjoy the celebrations. I am so very grateful that we live in a country where we celebrate the birth of our nation with fireworks, family get-togethers, and baseball games. It’s such a special time! One of my favorite vacations is a trip to Boston to see where it all began. The USS Constitution and Bunker Hill, Paul Revere’s house, and the Old North Church where lanterns were hung in 1775, to name a few. I never get tired of going back to that history. This year, we will celebrate the holiday with my daughter, Carissa, her husband, Ken, and my granddaughters, Savannah (17) and McKenna (almost 11). We have planned a “cooking throw-down.” We had talked about doing this some time ago, but it never worked out. This year, we’ll have two teams: Ken and Savannah versus my husband, Manny, and McKenna. McKenna loves to cook and is really great at it! When we discussed this, she chose Manny over me to be her sous chef. Savannah chose Dad over Mom. That leaves Carissa and me as judges. It should be lots of fun! We have yet to choose the dinner, but I’m sure there will be lots of laughs and memories made. I can’t wrap up this Independence Day issue without my heartfelt thanks to all of those in the Armed Services who keep us free every day. Manny is a 20-year Navy vet, and I have learned so much about the sacrifices that these people make. I do not know anyone else who has made a career out of military service. Manny has taught me so much about what has to happen to keep our country free. Honor, courage, and commitment are the words that Manny lives by, and I am proud that he is my husband! Thank you, Manny! I hope that everyone enjoys a safe, fun holiday weekend. Be careful with the fireworks, eat lots of hot dogs and hamburgers, and take a moment to be grateful for this wonderful country we are so blessed to live in.

Style Hints for Sunny Days Look Cool, Feel Cool, Keep Cool!

By Holly Bell

It’s finally here—summer! It’s time to celebrate everything the season brings. We love it when those first warm days treat us with sunshine on our faces. As the hot days wear on, however, it’s sometimes difficult to figure out what to wear to keep cool but also look cool and put-together.

The first thing to consider when shopping for summer clothing for the entire family is fabric. Choose items made from cooling fabrics like cotton, linen, chambray, and bamboo. These fabrics breathe, letting air flow in and out. Avoid fabrics made of nylon, silk, polyester, or wool (unless it’s Merino wool). These fabrics retain heat because of their dense thread count. Many clothing items are now designed with moisture-wicking technology, which means it keeps dampness at bay. Check the tag for moisture-wicking fabric, especially on men’s clothing and workout attire. I think most of us know that lighter colors are cooler in the summer than dark colors, since dark colors absorb heat while light colors reflect it. Size is another consideration. Your summer wardrobe should be airy and loose, even if that means you need to size up. Loose clothing allows the air to circulate around the body and is much more comfortable than tight-fitting clothing in the middle of a heat wave. 10

July 2022

www.womensedition.com

Keeping it simple can help you stay comfortable even in hot temperatures. Go for loose, simply cut attire. The new pant of the season for both men and women is the loose trouser look. It arrived just in time for summer comfort! Shorts should be knee length for the greatest comfort. Shorter shorts might be cooler, but sweaty skin is sticky, and you don’t want your legs rubbing together, creating even more heat. For guys, short-sleeved, light-colored, loose-fitting shirts are the ticket. Jeans are just too hot for summer, unless you choose the lookalike denim fabric of chambray. This thin, airy cotton fabric has the look of denim but without the weight. Guys would do better in cotton blend khaki or chino pants in the summer. Dresses aren’t just for special occasions—they are the coolest option for summer. A loose maxi dress that lets air flow around your legs is both cool and elegant. Men and women can top off their look with a summer hat made of an organic fabric or straw. Hats are not just a fashion statement; they are necessary to keep those harmful sun’s rays away from our faces. Both men and women would benefit from a pair of jazzy-looking sunglasses to top off their summer look.

What if we need to dress more professionally for the office? For men and Apparel = Jewelry women, look for blazers and jackets Polish Pottery that are partially lined or unlined. A O U… lined jacket can really get uncomforttify Y u a able in the summer, as it holds your Be body heat and will not breathe. Look for genuine leather shoes, as vegan leather will leave your feet hot and sticky. Going on vacation? A great capsule wardrobe for men would be three pairs of shorts, two pairs of chinos, two or a nd y o u three shirts in cotton and linen, and r surroundings at… two or three pullover knit shirts in cotton blend fabrics and light colors or fun patterns. For shoes, I’d suggest one pair of white sneakers, a comfy tan slip-on and a dressier loafer, along with a pair of flip-flops. Also pack a lightweight sport coat, just in case. Don’t forget accessories like a brown belt that works with everything. A woman’s vacation wardrobe can be simplified by using several items differently. A Woman’s Work

How to Fall in Love Without Trying Finding Your Sweetheart

By Sharon Knierim

When I met my husband-to-be, I wasn’t looking for romance or love or even a young man to date. Oh, no, not me. I had laid out perfect plans to be a career woman without any personal attachments. I was young and opinionated (weren’t we all?) and extremely self-centered. With my full-time employer, my future was set: I would maintain my employment, the remainder of my college credits would be financed by the company, and then I would be on my way to fame and fortune. All my time would be my own, and I would be my very own boss with my very own plans and personal life. Sounds like loads of fun, doesn’t it? The plan seemed sound, and I do love a good plan without any detours or surprises. Well, I guess we all know what happens to the best laid plans. I met my future hubby on Friday, May 16, 1969, at 4:47 p.m. He was picking up one of my roommates, who was his girlfriend at the time. When he offered me a ride, too, I somehow realized that my life was not going to be quite as I had planned. It didn’t take long for my roommate and her boyfriend to fall out of charm with each other. When it happened, there I was, sitting like a big spider, just waiting

for my chance. It may sound wicked, but fate is fate— sometimes, we just have to go along with it. After a short while, my secret love called for a date, and I accepted gladly. All week, the excitement built in me. Friday night came…and he stood me up! This had never happened to me before. The next time he called for a date, I was perhaps more curious than excited, but I accepted again. The date started well, but then he invited his best buddy to join us…for the whole evening. They reminisced about their high school days, their fishing trips, their experience in the Armed Forces, and everything else they could think of. It was one of the most boring nights of my life.

Finally, he offered to drive me home to my parents’ house, where I was spending the weekend. Just about a mile from there, he pulled the car over for a little kissy-kissy. He asked if I was tired, and I replied that I was. He said he was tired, too, and proceeded to fall asleep. There we sat, in the dark, directly in front of the neighborhood gossip’s house. After an hour or two, my sister and her husband drove past and slowed down to get a good look at whoever was in this car. When my future hubby finally awoke, the sun was coming up. It was too late to take me to Mom and Pop’s house, so we drove around two counties for a few hours, stopped for breakfast, drove around some more, and then went back to my parents’ house at an acceptable time in late morning. I never wanted to see that boy again. The next weekend, though, we had a more normal date. Round two included my future husband’s old girlfriend (where did she come from?), some guy named Buzzy, and three crazy guys who called my date “four-eyes.”This was not a fun date, but it certainly was memorable. I did get home on time, and all was forgiven. Neither of us remembers our third date, but it must have happened and must have been followed by many more. Eventually, earning that coveted college degree by a specific date didn’t seem so important. My sweetie became my number-one obsession. What was it that attracted me to this off-beat guy? Answers to questions like that are never easy. He loved music and had a fabulous ability to whistle, but that wasn’t really it. There was something special behind that rough surface that appealed to me. I do know that I liked the fact that he wouldn’t let me control him. Previous casual boyfriends had seemed like slaves, doing anything to keep a girl happy. Of course, this was during the Vietnam War, and many young men had been looking for a girl to marry so that they could stay home from the fight. Usually, by the second date, a boy had brought the prospective bride home to meet his folks. My sweetheart had already been to Vietnam and was now working himself through college and planning his future— which now included me. I felt comfortable with this guy, and loved. He was the first person who told me he loved me. You gotta love that! Nearly 50 years later, I’m still loving it.

Specialty Dental Care

Everyone Wants a Great Smile

By Kate Beiting

Dr. Timothy McVaney wants you to smile. He wants you to smile broadly and not be embarrassed about the look of your teeth or the health of your gums. You may think that improving or restoring your smile is not possible, but the professionals at Specialty Dental Care would say otherwise. Dr. McVaney and his staff use a wide variety of techniques, training, and experiences to redesign that smile of yours and calm your misgivings. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. McVaney can create a smile you’ll be happy to share. Dr. McVaney is a second-generation Omaha dentist who founded Specialty Dental Care in 1991 after earning his DDS and MS in Periodontics from the College of Dentistry at UNL. His list of professional credentials is long, including being a Fellow in the American and International College of Dentistry, a Fellow in the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry, and a Diplomat for the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. McVaney specializes in periodontics. A periodontist, he explains, specializes in preventing and treating diseases of the gums. Bacteria live in the plaque that builds up daily on the teeth. This is the leading cause of gum disease. Swollen, tender, or red and bleeding gums may indicate gingivitis—the earliest form of the disease. Untreated gingivitis can lead to receding gums, bone loss, and loose (or lost) teeth. Dr. McVaney’s goal is to save teeth and keep you and your gums healthy. One of the many calamities of the pandemic has been neglected dental health. Skipping regular dental cleanings, eating too many sweets at home, maybe becoming lax in your flossing regimen—any of these factors could have compromised your teeth. The CDC estimates that over half of Americans aged 30 and older, and 70 percent of adults over 65, have periodontal disease. “It is so important for these patients to come in and let us evaluate and help,” Dr. McVaney shares. If you need a specialist, your family dentist may recommend Specialty Dental Care. Dr. McVaney would be happy to see you, but he also points out that patients should always choose health professionals who help them feel comfortable. Ask questions when choosing a specialty dentist, he advises. What are the periodontist’s credentials? Does the staff listen to you and outline a plan of care? Are they following COVID protocols? What will the treatment look like, and what is the cost? Is sedation an option? No matter who your regular dentist recommends, you need to feel confident and comfortable with the dentist and the staff. At your first visit to Specialty Dental Care, you’ll receive an examination, a review of medical and dental history, and a periodontal and dental exam. This includes 18

July 2022

a head, neck, and oral cancer screening. “Every patient has a plan deDr. Tim McVaney signed for their treatment,” Dr. McVaney explains. “Our goal is to help you keep your teeth.” Treatments range from noninvasive procedures to dental implants. Scaling and root planing involve deep cleaning to remove plaque. “Human stucco,” Dr. Mc Vaney calls it. “Stucco is great for houses, not teeth.” Deep cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the teeth and gums. Severely damaged, decayed, or impacted teeth may require extraction. Gum grafts repair excessive gum recession, and bone grafts increase the amount of jawbone to replace lost bone. If teeth cannot be saved, natural-looking dental implants may be the best course of action. Implants consist of titanium posts or frames placed in the jawbone to act as roots. These implants bond with the bone to provide a stable base for single or multiple replacement teeth. “Implants allow us to intervene earlier and help patients maintain their teeth longer,” Dr. McVaney says. “Of course, we want patients to have ongoing healthy practices, but we have solutions for the challenges patients may be facing.” Dr. McVaney has simple advice for all patients: “Go to the dentist regularly. Don’t put it off! You want to head off gum disease or tooth decay, and we are here to help.” In addition to Dr. McVaney, the practice includes three dental hygienists and additional support staff. “We are passionate about providing excellent care and customer service, and we practice after-care and follow up with our patients.” Perhaps the best evidence of success is comments from patients. Fred T says, “Very professional, knowledgeable, courteous.” Marilyn O says, “As always, I was treated with great care and efficiency.” Mark K says, “Dr. McVaney broke it down for me so I understood the sum of the parts.” Specialty Dental Care, P.C., is located at 12242 K Plaza, Suite 113, in Omaha. Wildlife and Kids

Set Aside the Tech and Go Outdoors!

By Janette Calabro

Remember those childhood days when you played outside, connecting with nature? Daily bicycle rides through the neighborhood weren’t unusual. Summer camps, visits to the zoo, and wildlife encounters in national parks on family vacations were more common back then, too. Connecting with the great outdoors helps kids to get moving. It raises their awareness of nature, the beat of their heart, and their learning development. It stimulates children’s minds, curiosity, and imagination. Its opens kids’ eyes to their responsibility for all living things and activates the senses, with the ability to see, hear, feel, and touch something that a cell phone or iPad can’t create. Get your kids outside, and their whole attitude will change…from lethargic and anxious to engaged and relaxed.

The Child Mind Institute recently revisited a decades-old study that applies to children today. “In the early 1980s, a Harvard University biologist named Edward O. Wilson proposed a theory called biophilia: that humans are instinctively drawn towards their natural surroundings. Many 21st century parents, however, would question this theory, as they watch their kids express a clear preference for sitting on a couch in front of a screen over playing outside. The national panic about kids spending too much time indoors has become so extreme that the crisis has a name: Nature deficit disorder. While calling it a disorder might be merely rhetorical, it’s clear kids spend significantly more time inside than outside. This shift is largely due to technology: The average American child is said to spend 4 to 7 minutes a day in unstructured play outdoors, and over 7 hours a day in front of a screen.” Whether that screen is a television, phone, or gaming device, now is the time to turn it off and take the younger set outdoors and—better yet—around wildlife. Adults understand, from their own experiences, that spending time outside after a long day at work lowers stress and blood pressure levels, creates balance, and improves mood. Think of what connecting with animals and nature can do for your kids or grandkids after a long stretch of time spent indoors! Let’s look at a few ideas to help promote outdoor adventures for children. One great idea is to visit your local zoo or drive out of state to a big zoo attraction that you and the kids have always wanted to see. Check for information on summer camp programs, wildlife exhibits, and safe programs for close-up encounters with creatures from the wild. There are often specialized programs for different age groups. For example, young grade schoolers might have the option of a single-day safari, depending on the zoo’s size and available animals. Older kids may have the option of a two-day summer camp. Check the protocol to see if snacks are provided. Often, parents need to pack a lunch (and there’s most likely no available refrigerator), so prepare ahead of time. If the zoo is big enough to have a train, a ride around the grounds can really enhance the fun. 20

July 2022

Zoo camps usually present educational programs and fun activities, including live animal encounters, zoo tours, games, and crafts. Younger kids can participate in exploring food chains, predatory animals amid peaceful creatures, and how the food web plays a crucial role in our ecosystem. Kids in middle grades might participate in more advanced activities like creating technology inspired by animals or exploring creatures that they’ve only seen in books. Older kids might get the chance to explore the possibilities of a future vocation as a local animal doctor or zoo veterinarian, with the ability to talk with and observe an in-house zoo vet! Enhance your child’s learning development with zoo conservation biology. Most larger zoos incorporate early childhood education for age-appropriate learning. There are virtual programs at many zoos for at-home fun, but the most fun and best learning experience happens in person. Safety is a priority in such programs, for the children and for the animals. For example, zoos usually install animal webcams for kids to check in with the big cats and other large animals they can’t get close to, including gorillas, elephants, pandas, giraffes, and other safari creatures. Your child has the chance to observe and describe how they view the natural habitat and animal behaviors beyond the pages of a book. Zoos also have the ability to raise awareness and educate children and their parents. When you see the different habitats that different animals need to thrive, it highlights the importance of conservation and animal care. The up-closeand-personal aspect of zoos makes it easy for kids to see how the environment has a significant impact on the lives and welfare of animals. In fact, many modern zoos have conservation as a major part of their mission, teaching visitors about zoo animals and their wild counterparts’ conservation needs. You really can’t go wrong by teaching your children to be respectful of animals and nature, and zoo programming is a great way to do it. In today’s world, climate threats, pandemics, and other environmental hazards threaten the wild. Wildlife parks and other natural environments like reserves often become a refuge for nature and a way for animals to thrive, while preserving a safe place for children and their families to

www.womensedition.com

escape the urban life and safely explore the wild outdoors. Wildlife parks and reserves are educational for all, with the beauty and splendor of life outside your normal habitat. Get out and breathe the air—notice how your children’s attitude immediately changes. National wildlife parks and reserves improve air quality, filter natural water, battle greenhouse gases, and keep endangered species safe and able to breed. Expose your children at a young age to the beauty and wonder of the majestic creatures that roam these parks. You may catch a glimpse of moose, deer, sheep, coyotes, and wolves, depending on the park you visit. Bears and mountain lions are out there, too, so be aware and keep a healthy distance. (Some parks have certain areas in which people are required to stay inside their vehicles.) Kids will learn to appreciate the importance of protecting wildlife and understand the impact of the natural world on our daily human lives. Children’s appreciation for animals will carry over into their adult lives; as adults, they’ll likely continue to visit, appreciate, and protect wildlife parks and reserves. Another wild idea is to bring animals to your children at home! This is called a wildlife encounter, and your child may have already experienced one at school. A wildlife encounter party brings animal ambassadors to visit your kid’s party with animals in hand. Kids get to physically interact with the animals themselves. What animals are they exposed to? It depends on the time of year and what animals are available. Baby kangaroos are always popular, and children

can bottle-feed them (Have the cameras ready!). Don’t be surprised if a snake or an alligator shows up, though they will of course be safely contained and controlled. Turtles, hedgehogs, small cats or bears, and parrots and other exotic birds might be on the list, too. Call your wildlife encounter source or zoo ahead of time to find out more details on their specific protocol. These encounters are often connected to an event such as a birthday party with other guests, so be sure to let your guests’ parents in on the secret in advance. If you want to take it down a notch from the home wildlife encounter, consider a trip to see some friendly farm animals at your local zoo’s petting zoo. Companionable goats and placid sheep often wait for a friendly visitor to pet or feed them. In some locales, a working farm may also offer domesticated animal interactions as educational experiences for kids. Animals might include hens, cows, llamas, ducks, sheep, pigs, rabbits, horses, and more. As with any animal encounter, be sure to wash your hands afterwards. Have fun and keep it clean! Whether they occur at the zoo, at a wildlife reserve, at a farm, at school, or at home, animal encounters can make your child smarter and more sensitive to nature. Exposure to new ideas is a brain workout, increasing your child’s vocabulary, curiosity, and social skills. Set aside the technology for a few days and get outside. The animals are waiting! Stark Media Films Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story? Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful.

“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Absolute Perfection Electrolysis Empowering You!

By Maria Harding

“I like giving people back their confidence,” says Mary Brennan, owner of Absolute Perfection Electrolysis. She knows how important it is to give clients control over their own body and appearance. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method for every color and type of hair on all skin types, and Mary is a master practitioner. Mary has been a professional electrologist for 25 years. Her technical experience is unparalleled; in fact, her colleagues in the industry have elected her President of the Nebraska Electrology Association. Her educational background is in science and nursing, which helps inform her initial assessments. “We go over a little of their health and hormone history, to see if there may be a cause or a trigger” for the excess hair, she explains. Some chronic conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or a pituitary imbalance, can lead to excess hair growth. Mary asks about her clients’ stress levels and (for her female clients) whether they continue to menstruate. She asks how clients are currently removing hair and with what frequency, as well as whether they’re taking any prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medications. “We talk for at least half an hour,” she shares. “If clients are comfortable with me, then they’ll be comfortable getting their treatments done.” Mary wants Absolute Perfection to be a sanctuary. With total confidentiality and empathy, she meets the cosmetic and emotional needs of women with hirsutism (male-pattern hair growth), men with excessively hairy backs or ears, and transgender women. “In fact, I’ve helped so many transgender women that I know how long it’s going to take and which hair is the most important to do first,” she relates. “I’ve also had people come to me who aren’t already connected with a good doctor or therapist, and I’m able to give referrals or more information.” There are three modalities that can be used to perform electrolysis—thermolysis, galvanic, and blend. Thermolysis uses quick bursts of heat, galvanic creates a chemical reaction through an electric current, and blend uses a combination of thermolysis and galvanic. “For body hair, I usually go with straight galvanic,” Mary says, “though blend is my primary choice; I think it’s a little gentler on the skin.” With a determined smile, she adds, “If I’m not getting the ‘kill rate’ I want with one modality, I’ll switch.” Does it hurt? “It’s warm, with a bit of a sting,” Mary says. “You could take Tylenol or ibuprofen before treatment, if you want to. If you’ve been a constant tweezer, the sensation isn’t that big a deal.” The desire to be rid of unwanted body hair often outweighs any discomfort. “I can guarantee that I can kill every hair,” promises Mary, but it’s not a one-and-done process. Because a hair can only be permanently eliminated while it is actively 24

growing, it will take several visits to Absolute Perfection before each follicle is caught at the optimal point in its cycle. For this reason, “I would say the minimum for any area is probably eight months,” says Mary. “When you start Mary Brennan, BSN,CPE, LE, Owner treatments, you may come once a week for 30 minutes. As you go along, appointments get farther apart and appointment time shortens.” She adds that the end result can be delayed by what clients do between appointments. “If you’re tweezing or waxing in between, I may have to wait for that hair to come up again,” she explains. Electrolysis is safe; there really are no health exclusions. Some sources advise that individuals with pacemakers use caution, but Mary has worked with clients with these devices without incident. “If you have any implanted device, I need an okay from your doctor,” she clarifies. Though studies indicate it is harmless for pregnant women to undergo electrolysis, Mary opts for heat-only modalities, rather than galvanic, as an extra degree of caution with her pregnant patients. Clients should look for an electrologist who is licensed in their state by the American Electrology Association (AEA), and they should expect a clean and sterile environment. Mary explains that all the needles she uses are disposable, and tweezers and other tools have been sterilized in an autoclave. “I also wear gloves and a mask, and I wipe down all surfaces between each person,” she says. Individuals who go through this journey find that their outward appearance more confidently reflects their inner beauty. “They find that their skin is even better, because they’re not picking at it anymore to tweeze the hair out!” shares Mary. Contact her for a free consultation, even if you’re not sure whether electrolysis is right for you. Mary will arm you with information and put you in control. Absolute Perfection Electrolysis is located at 7810 Dodge Street, Suite 4. Reach Mary at 402-398-3300 or omahaelectrolysis.net.

Good Looks

Here Comes the Sun Don’t Get Burned!

By Loretta McCollum

We all love to be outside. Soaking up fresh air and sunshine can be rejuvenating and energizing. However, too much time in the sun can have damaging effects on the skin. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the skin’s elastin fibers, causing the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its elasticity. Too much sun also increases your risk of developing skin cancer. It’s important to know how to protect yourself from those damaging rays, what the risk factors are, and how to detect signs of skin cancer. People who have a history of frequent sunburns or have spent a lot of time in the outdoors are at higher risk of developing skin cancer. Individuals with light-colored skin, eyes, and hair are more at risk due to a lower amount of protective melanin in their system. Where you live is also a factor. Dry climates with lots of year-round sunshine have a higher percentage of people with skin cancer. Men are three times more likely than women to develop skin cancer. You can protect yourself from harmful UV rays by limiting time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the most intense. Wear long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, and broad-brimmed hats. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Fair-skinned individuals may want an SPF of 30 or higher. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it’s an estimate of how long the sun’s UV rays would take to burn your skin.

An SPF of 30 means that it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you used no sunscreen—but that only holds true if you apply the sunscreen correctly. Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before going outdoors. Cover your entire body, including your ears and hands, the tops of your feet, along the hairline, and any areas of the head exposed by balding or thinning hair. Reapply every two hours; more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating. You should also use sunscreen when sitting next to a window for an extended period of time (like in the car). It’s also important to protect your eyes from the sun. UV rays can cause premature aging of the delicate skin around the eyes and may lead to eyelid skin cancer. The sun can also cause other serious eye conditions, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and a corneal sunburn condition called keratitis. Protect your peepers by wearing UVA- and

Make Way for the Super Kitchen The Hub of the Home

By Robyn V. Powell

The functionality of the kitchen has changed a lot over the years. What once existed strictly as a utilitarian work space is now the heart of the home. Societal influences and a pandemic have changed the way we live, transforming our homes along the way. Homeowners everywhere are knocking down walls and demolishing dining rooms to make way for the new super kitchen. The ultimate kitchen combines a well-equipped cooking zone within a stylish multi-functional living space—the place to relax with family, entertain friends, oversee homework, and even work from home! Demanding this much from any one room requires thoughtful planning and excellence in design aesthetic. Luckily, manufacturers have risen to the challenge with a range of products designed to deliver the kitchen of your dreams. Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes, but the best kitchens start with a great floor plan. The layout—that is, the placement of countertops, appliances, and storage—is what will make or break the efficiency of your space. The most practical shapes for a kitchen are a U-shape or an L-shape. Both of these configurations allow for a kitchen island to serve as the central anchor and for maximum cabinets around the perimeter. Placing the sink or range in the island puts the cook in the catbird seat! You get to look out into the rest of your space while cooking or prepping, allowing you to

engage with your family or guests while you work. Not every kitchen is going to have room for an island. The kitchen triangle—whereby the fridge, cooktop, and sink are placed no more than 9 feet apart, forming a triangle—is the most efficient layout in small-to-medium sized kitchens. With open, sprawling kitchens, it’s more useful to think in terms of work zones. To identify work zones, think about the kitchen tasks you perform regularly, like cooking, cleaning, or making coffee. A work zone contains everything you need to perform each task. For instance, to streamline cleanup, place the dishwasher next to the sink, with a compost bin and trash bin nearby. If your family cooks together or entertains often, having just one source of running water can be a pain. Adding a second sink allows two or more people to work together comfortably in the same space without rubbing elbows. Having two sinks doubles your cleanup power and allows for more helping hands!

Erin listened, assessed my concerns/desires and was knowledgeable and responsive. So it made great sense for her to assist us in our future housing prospect—a downtown condo. Again, she listened, did her homework, and presented the best-matched properties to tour. She kept at it—in her words, “it’s a process.” Eventually we found the condo of our dreams—and then she REALLY went to work to buy us two more years in our home. We had three rental companies tell us we were doing the impossible yet Erin put her networking skills together and found an ideal tenant, willing to pay—cash up front! Childhood Obesity

Trim Down Your Child’s Risk

By Leslie Byrne

Many of us delight in making our children happy while we guide them through childhood into adulthood. We want to reward them for making good choices and for their accomplishments, and who doesn’t like tasty treats? However, sometimes our good intentions can turn into overindulgences…which can turn into long-term unhealthy habits. Any parent reading this knows we are talking about the ubiquitous school treats, the fast food kid’s meals, the pizza parties, the treat from the checkout lane at the grocery store, the grab-and-go meals that kids eat in the car because they need to get to a practice or school event. When these kids become teens, many continue to choose daily treats like sugary smoothies, sweet coffee drinks, and fast food. These bad habits that many kids learn when they are young are habits that parents did not mean to set. In the United States, childhood obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. Too little activity and too many calories are the main contributors to childhood obesity. (Other causes can be genetic or hormonal.) In the past 30 years, childhood obesity in the United States has more than tripled. Is it too late to turn things around? Experts say no, but it’s going to take a significant change in mindset. Childhood obesity is a serious problem that is putting kids at risk of an unhealthy adult life filled with obesity-triggered diseases and problems. Today, about one in six youths are obese, which is about 15 million children ages 2 through 19 years. Obesity in children is measured by their body mass index (BMI). If a child’s BMI is higher than 95 percent of other children their

age and sex, they are considered overweight or obese. Childhood obesity rates vary among kids of different races and ethnicities. In Hispanic children, the rate is 26 percent. In non-Hispanic black children, it’s 25 percent; in non-Hispanic white children, it’s 16 percent. Obese children are at greater risk for diabetes. Many develop high cholesterol levels and insulin resistance before the age of 10. Obesity can make asthma symptoms worse and can cause kids to have joint pain from the extra weight. Children with obesity can grow to become obese adults and have an increased risk of heart disease or certain types of cancer. A sad reality, too, is that obese kids often experience psychological stress from being bullied or teased about their weight.

Telling the Stories That Matter

By Linda Sutherland

What is it about a story that can move people to the point of tears… or to the point of action? What is a story, anyway? In its starkest definition, a story is simply an account of pertinent events or incidents, but a story can be so much more than that. A story can be designed to persuade, instruct, or entertain the listener or reader. Stories can teach us lessons, serving as cautionary tales. The very best stories pique the curiosity of others and pull them into the developments and outcomes. One man who knows the elements of a good story is Jon Stark, the owner of Stark Media Films. This man is the real deal, and he approaches his clients’ stories with a wonder and curiosity that I find quite rare these days. Creatively speaking, Jon’s experience is vast. His first creative journey was as a musician. (He can even list his band’s appearance on VH1 on his resume!) It was his history with Apple that steered him toward producing videos for internal promotions and presentations. During that time, a certain Steve Jobs was

preciative of the opportunities they offered, he knew that he could do more and was motivated to start his own video production company. Along this path, he created a documentary for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, which was later presented to Congress to educate lawmakers about the health issues associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Jon cites this documentary as one of his most meaningful projects. It’s no wonder that all of his career paths led back to video production. Watching his videos makes you consider things that maybe you haven’t thought about for a long time. Now, you might think in this era of social media that anyone can make a video. In some respects, that is true, but there’s a wide gap between making a video and telling a story. Jon brings with him years of expertise in storytelling and documentary work. He takes hours and hours of video, cutting and editing and splicing until the story has an inspirational impact—that’s not the type of work most people are posting online. When Jon is approached about filming and producing a documentary, his first questions will always be, “Who is the audience? What is the message? Who will see the finished product?” From there, he spends time with his clients, getting to know the subjects of the story and learning all he can. It may involve many hours of filming and editing to get the final piece, but when it is finished, Jon asserts, “it will be relevant, and it will be honest.” It is of great significance to him that the final product is engaging, meaningful, and of the

highest quality. Jon encourages all of us to consider preserving our stories now, even if we think we’ll get around to it later. “I wish people would take action before it is too late,” he says. “Make a video of your family memories and bring them to life. None of us knows how much time we have or what the future holds, and it is important to record those memories for future generations.” The insights that he can bring to a celebration of life, for example, are of major significance. It occurred to me as I was talking to Jon about his business that I would trust this man with the task of documenting my life story or that of my family members. In like fashion, I would trust him if I wanted to create a marketing video for my company. He comes across as dedicated to his craft but also dedicated to capturing the truth. Isn’t that what we are all looking for…the truth? A documentary can be an amazing celebration of life, but there’s no need to wait until someone has passed to capture family memories. Why not start a family memory documentary now, to keep family stories alive for future generations? Jon’s magic touch will bring life to your stories. He can also use his dedication and skills to create a marketing video that celebrates your special talents or the services your business offers. You can’t go wrong putting your trust in this talented man! Visit starkmediafilms.com to learn more or get in touch with Jon at 402-980-9089 or jon@starkmediafilms.com.

Truly Personal Health Care

By Angella Arndt

Do you have immediate access to your primary care physician, or do you have to wait several days or weeks for an appointment? When the appointment finally arrives, do you feel as though your physician is rushing through it, focusing only on the immediate issue? If you want personal care, convenient access, and same-to-next day appointments, concierge medicine might be for you. Members.MD is a membership-based private healthcare provider here in Omaha. For an annual fee, patients receive personalized health and wellness care, immediate care when they need it, access to their physician seven days a week, and coordinated healthcare management. Dr. Jyoti Mahapatra

Members.MD was founded in February 2010 by Dr. Joel Bessmer and two investment partners. Dr. Bessmer and his wife, Kathy, bought out the investors several years ago and became the sole owners. The medical practice has four concierge physicians and a team of medical professionals. Dr. Jyoti Mahapatra joined Members.MD in 2018 as Omaha’s first female concierge physician. Growing up in Lincoln, Dr. Mahapatra was always interested in science and medicine. Her father and grandfather

are both physicians. As a child, she often accompanied her father, a cardiologist, on patient rounds and would look at films with him. “My parents have a strong sense of giving back to the community,” she says. “I believe that when we help heal other people, we are also improving our community.” Dr. Mahapatra earned her B.A. in psychology from Boston College and her M.D. from Creighton University. She completed a residency at William Beaumont Hospital in

Royal Oak, Michigan, and is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She spent 15 years in emergency medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center before joining the Members.MD team. Dr. Mahapatra provides primary care and preventative medicine services, with an emphasis on women’s health. She specializes in hormone therapy, fitness, and nutrition. “As a working mother, I know what it’s like to put yourself last,” she shares. “Many women are always taking care of their children and families, leaving no time to take care of themselves. I like caring for women who take care of everyone else in their lives.” In addition to providing primary care services, Members. MD physicians provide acute and chronic disease management and preventive healthcare. “Wellness is not the opposite of illness,” Dr. Mahapatra asserts. “Just because you are not sick doesn’t mean you are healthy.”The practice also offers advanced medical testing as part of its preventive medicine goals. A wide range of testing is available, including Foto Finder, Boston Heart Diagnostic Testing, and ALCAT food sensitivity testing. Foto Finder takes whole-body skin pictures to identify skin cancer. Boston Heart Testing is a comprehensive vascular and genetic test that determines heart attack and stroke risk. The ALCAT food sensitivity test identifies foods causing irritation and inflammation. Although not all tests are covered by insurance, they can identify problems early, which benefits a patient’s overall well-being. A priority for Members.MD is to treat the whole body, inside and out. In support of this mission, the practice has expanded to include concierge aesthetics. Services include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and Xeomin injections. Similar to Botox, Xeomin is a smaller molecule with fewer

proteins. This more pure version of a neurotoxin has increased efficacy. They also offer the SkinBetter skincare line, which is sold exclusively through medical offices. Although aesthetic services are available at many spas, Dr. Mahapatra explains that some medical spas are driven by volume, with minimally trained providers. “We offer these services and products so our patients can receive treatments by knowledgeable, appropriately trained medical staff that they know and trust.” Establishing and maintaining a solid patient-physician relationship is vital to good health. Most people don’t have a personal relationship with their physician, Dr. Mahapatra points out, and many people are not aware of the benefits of having a concierge physician. “Even as a physician, I did not understand what it meant to be a concierge doctor,” she relates. “Most physicians don’t have time to practice medicine the way we do. Patients are surprised to learn they can reach out to us at any time.” Dr. Mahapatra enjoys meeting with patients to learn about their history and develop treatment plans, and she finds it particularly rewarding when patients refer family members and friends. “We get to practice medicine the way we want to because time constraints do not limit us. Everyone in our practice has the same goal, which is to help patients access health care and keep them healthy and well.” It is health care that is not just personalized but truly personal. Members.MD is located at 11810 Nicholas Street, Suite 101, in Omaha. The office is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 402-779-8400 to schedule an appointment or find them online at members.md.

Esther George, Inflation Fighter

Bringing Common Sense to the Fed Since 1982

By George Morgan

It doesn’t take an MBA from the Harvard School of Business and reams of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to figure out that the cost of living is currently rising at a rate faster than most Americans have ever experienced. All it takes to figure that out is a trip to the supermarket or gas station. The next thing to figure out is what’s causing the inflation spike, and what can be done about it? The answer to the causation question is that it is coming from factors too numerous to catalog here. Let’s turn to the second question: What can be done about it? There is no magic on/off switch for inflation. Understanding Breeds

The Right Dog for Your Family

By Jackie Byers

Before you pick a canine companion for yourself and your family, it’s important to understand that your lifestyle greatly influences the breed of dog you should choose. Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the largest registry of internationally accepted dog breeds, recognizes 339 breeds of purebred dogs (that is, dogs that are not genetically crossed with any other breeds). Dogs have been bred for many different purposes, from behavior to good looks to a lack of shedding. All dogs can become wonderful pets, but not all dogs will adapt well to every lifestyle. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is an excellent resource for information on dog breeds (and all things dog). Visit their website (akc.com) for detailed information on many dog breeds, including photos, activity level, barking level, coat type, shedding tendencies, size, and trainability. It also has a directory of reputable breeders from whom you can purchase a particular breed of dog. (This is important because many disreputable breeders are also out there and should be avoided.) AKC can also connect you with rescue organizations for specific breeds. We don’t have space here to go over the attributes of 339 breeds of dog, but the 10 most popular breeds in the United States offer some hints and choices for you to consider. The number one dog choice nationally (and also worldwide) is the Labrador. It’s been top dog for more than 30 years. Labs thrive on human attention. At almost two feet tall and 65–85 pounds, this is an active dog with a heart of gold. The second-ranked pooch is relatively new to the top-dog list: the French bulldog. This is a smaller dog, a lovable and calm pet who does not need much exercise outside of a daily short walk. Third on the list is the smart, loyal German shepherd. They can be trained for many tasks and are often the dog of choice for service dogs because of their intelligence. Athletic and playful golden retrievers are next. This number-four dog needs physical activity daily and loves human companionship. If you are a couch potato at home, keep looking. Bulldogs are a calm, lovable fifth place. Like their French cousins at number two, they generally get enough exercise from a few short trips outside daily to take care of business. They will enjoy short walks in nice weather. Poodles are sixth and offer three different non-shedding size options—the larger the dog, the more room to roam it will need. Their images were carved on ancient Roman tombs, so their popularity has a long history. The vocal, highly active beagle is seventh on the list. Originally trained to hunt in packs, this pooch needs a fenced

yard and usually gets along well with other dogs. In eighth place is the rottweiler—a loyal, intelligent breed that does not deserve the fearsome reputation it gets. This strong breed was originally trained to move cattle to market; these days, they are often trained as guard dogs. Some rottweilers are trained to be overly aggressive—that’s the mistake of the owner, not the fault of the breed. In ninth place is the German shorthair pointer, an active hunter and competitor. These dogs were bred for their whitetipped tail, which is easy to follow in dense underbrush as they point the way to prey. These intelligent dogs need space and regular exercise. Finally, in tenth place: the dachshund. This recent addition to the top-ten list makes a loyal and lovable pet, but it takes patience to train this distractible pooch. Remember, this is 10 out of 339 purebred dogs. The list of designer breeds, like Labradoodle, Yorkiepoo, and Pomski, grows every year. Local shelters will also have many dogs of mixed heritage to choose from. If you have children in your household, consider their ages and abilities to interact with a dog. If you are part of a working couple, will the dog be alone every day? Can you afford doggie day care or a daily dog walker? Is your family active and outdoorsy, in need of a dog who would like to run and play, or would a lapdog fit in better with your group? Where you live should also impact your decision. Do you live in a home with a fenced yard or in an urban condo? Is there a dog park nearby? You may feel tempted by all of the four-legged friends (especially when they’re puppies!), but you need to choose a dog that will fit your lifestyle, and the breed tendencies are a good place to start. The dog you choose will win your heart quickly, so be sure you are setting up your family for success. Sources for this article included: rover.com, akc.org, and bluecross.org.uk. July 2022

Color Me Red, White, and Blue A Stars and Stripes Garden

By Linda Sutherland

As the Fourth of July approaches, everything is awash in red, white, and blue—and why shouldn’t the garden follow suit? That would be the best way for me to celebrate the stars and stripes. (“Plant a garden”is pretty much the way I would celebrate everything if I could!) Let’s call it a Stars and Stripes Garden. What a spectacular way to celebrate the Fourth of July, and what a winning way to add fireworks to your summer landscape! To make this holiday last all season, we need a plan. First, it is always helpful to draw up a little sketch of what you want to grow and how you want to arrange it to get the optimum bang for your buck. I think I would start with a row of white flowers, and my go-to white flower has always been the Shasta daisy. These tough guys manage to be hardy and sturdy while looking delicate. Shasta daisies love the sun and attract loads of butterflies. These beauties look good in flower arrangements as well as swaying in the breeze in your garden. They can handle hot, humid weather and cold temperatures very nicely, thank you very much! If you need a shade-loving white flower that loves the heat, consider the annual white impatiens (also known as Beacon impatiens). Do not make the mistake of planting them in the sun! These pearly white gems need full shade

44 The Rock Place.indd

at all times. Treat them like Southern Belles who get the vapors at the mere thought of sun, and they will be fine. At the risk of running on about white flowers, I feel I must mention that nothing looks as pristine and regal as white roses. Those could be the backdrop for the rest of your patriotic garden bed. The John F. Kennedy hybrid tea rose is just about as amazing as a rose can get, and they still have an aroma (unlike some of the new hybrids). They are intoxicating! Now, to red flowers. Of course, my mind is still on roses, and I adore the Mr. Lincoln red rose. A deeper and more velvety red rose you cannot find, and it is old-school lovely. This crimson beauty has a heady fragrance and would be the ultimate border for your Stars and Stripes Garden.

2/8/22 2:08 PM

www.womensedition.com

There are so many possibilities for red flowers. There are red gerbera daisies, dianthus, begonias, dahlias, hibiscus, and red sunflowers, to name a few. Vining red clematis would be outstanding as a climbing backdrop. Many bird-pollinated flowers are red and rich in nectar. California red poppies are a remarkable sight when planted in a grouping. As I have done in the past, I could wax on for quite some time about the joyous red coneflower. So many choices, so little time…. Now, let’s turn our attention to blue flowers. Blue is a less common floral color than red or white, but there are blue beauties to be found. I absolutely cannot talk about blue flowers without raving about the beauty of hydrangeas. There is really nothing like them, and they are grand and spectacular no matter what you plant them with. Whenever I think of a cottage garden, I picture charming blue delphiniums. They are a reminder of everything sweet and lovely from long ago. Although they are dainty, they can grow fairly tall, so plant them toward the back of the garden. Blue false indigo is easy-care and likes sun or partial shade. As with delphiniums, blue false indigo can get somewhat tall, so plant accordingly. Hunt for blue flowers at your local nursery or garden center—you may be surprised by what you can find. I grew up with bluebells in Texas, and they are still a favorite. Keep in mind that they love the shade—they can handle a bit of morning sun, but not too much. These trumpet-shaped lovelies remind me of a more whimsical time, and they are truly blue. If you are not ready to make a commitment to a full-fledged garden but would like to do your part for patriotic color, consider starting out with a couple of patriotic planters. The choice of annuals available for container gardens is nearly limitless. Blue lobelia can drape dramatically down the side of a container, as can white, sweet alyssum. Of course, no container garden would be complete without red geraniums. These continuous blooming beauties are a beautiful sight and mix wonderfully with so many different colors and species. Plant a few American flags in the pots, and you’ve got it—a Stars and Stripes Garden!

Benefits of a Trust Protecting Your Estate

By Linda Barnes

Estate planning is an important way to ensure that your property and other assets are distributed after your death according to your wishes. In the past, a will was often utilized for this purpose. With today’s more complicated laws regarding taxes and inheritance, a trust may afford certain advantages. Because laws are complex and vary by state, a reliable attorney experienced in estate law is your best bet. They understand the various kinds of trusts and will advise you on the one best suited to your needs. It is also essential that the legal agreement is written correctly. It may be difficult to think or talk about what will happen after one’s death. One motivator is to realize how planning ahead makes everything so much easier for loved ones. When my brother died unexpectedly of a heart attack, we were fortunate that he had a detailed plan in place. Besides easing the burden for a grieving family, an estate plan makes sure property and other assets go to those you designate. Without a will or trust, assets will be distributed according to state laws, often a slow and costly process. A trust is often chosen because it avoids probate and possibly some taxes, as well. Living (revocable) trusts, irrevocable trusts, special needs trusts, and asset protection trusts are some of the more common varieties. So much depends upon your unique situation: financial assets, property, business interests, and beneficiaries.

A revocable living trust allows the most flexibility. You give up direct ownership of certain assets—property, for example. It is transferred into the trust. You name a trustee to manage the assets in accordance with your wishes. However, as the name implies, a revocable trust can be modified or amended if circumstances change. Rather than going through probate when you die, your assets are used by the trustee to pay creditors before the remainder is distributed to the named beneficiaries. This is done privately, by the trustee, rather than publicly, as with a will. This process is normally quicker than the probate process, so beneficiaries receive their inheritance sooner. An irrevocable trust, on the other hand, cannot be changed once it is established. Though less flexible, it sometimes affords more financial benefits. Like the revocable trust, it avoids costly

I’m Sorry

Why and How to Apologize

“You owe me an apology!” Have these words ever come out of your mouth? My best guess is…yes. It may happen if someone does or says something that simply sets us off. If it’s a really bad experience, it hits us to the core of our being, and we feel as if we just got sucker-punched. We are angry, hurt, and frustrated.

“An apology is the superglue to life! It can repair just about anything.”—Lynn Johnston

Demanding an apology normally doesn’t work very well. At best, the person we are angry with might begrudgingly say,“I’m sorry.”We know they don’t mean it. We can sense that it’s totally insincere. Most of the time, it will make us feel worse than we felt when the apology was demanded. “A meaningful apology is one that communicates three R’s: regret, responsibility, and remedy.” —Beverley Engel

For many of us, giving someone a sincere apology can be a real challenge. Admitting we’ve made a mistake that has hurt another person takes a lot of courage. First off, we have to take a good hard look inside ourselves and reflect on the situation. Then, we have to own our mistakes in the conversation. Last, we need to come up with a plan to rectify the mistake we made in order to avoid making the same mistake again. Wow. That’s a lot.

“Apologies require vulnerability.” —Jennifer Thomas

Apologizing involves opening up your heart…and that, folks, is scary. I think some of the most challenging apologies are those that have to be made in marriages. Spouses spend lots and lots of time together. We see our mates when they are in all different types of “moods.”They may come home tired, not feeling great, angry at someone at the office. Many times, they take it out on their spouse. Many times, that is when the sparks begin to fly. “Saying ‘I’m sorry’ is saying ‘I love you’ with a wounded heart in one hand and your smothered pride in the other.” — Richelle E. Goodrich

What I have learned in my marriage to my husband Manny is how to sincerely apologize. I learned by his example, every time he apologized to me. Yes, Manny apologizes. A lot. As do I. Once we gain trust in our spouses, we realize that both of us are human, which means we both will make mistakes. A lot of negative emotion can be calmed by a sincere, heartfelt apology. Trust me. It does wonders for your marriage! “Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That’s why it’s a comfort to go hand in hand.” —Emily Kimbroug

Keeping in Touch

Finding Time for Extended Family

July is a popular month for family gatherings and vacations. The kids are through with summer sports; summer classes are over; camp is finished…everyone is ready for a break. What are you going to do? Many of my summers have involved family gatherings and road trips. Mom and her siblings grew up in the Midwest. When we were young, Mom made plans every summer for us to “go back home” and visit Grandma and Grandpa. It was a treat to meet all the relatives. In hindsight, I wish I’d paid more attention to the stories the Elders told about growing up. Eventually, the family spread out across the country. The Clan grew as the first cousins married and had children. Gatherings generally included weddings, funerals, or special visitors. The first Great Family Reunion (GFR) planned just as a family reunion was held in 1980. Most of the first cousins had families of their own. The Elders were beginning to dwindle in number and ability to travel. Gatherings were held at sites around the Midwest, making it as easy as possible for everyone to make it. Because of the age range (newborns to nonagenarians), we tended to gather by age for activities while still allowing a lot of interaction. The Elders included the original siblings and their spouses. The rest were split into three groups: The Younger-Elders and the Older-Youngers included the first cousins…almost 50 of us, including spouses…split almost

equally according to the birth order of the Elders. The Younger-Youngers included the children of the first cousins. There weren’t many planned activities at GFRs…the purpose was spending time with family and getting reacquainted. Each GFR included one planned evening when everyone gathered for a meal. At the largest ever GFR (over 100 of us), the meal included a hay-wagon ride to a campfire cookout, a regular event planned for anyone at the venue…needless to say, our group was the largest. That was the year we came from Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, California, Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Vermont, and Maine. The oldest was 93; the youngest was two. The most recent GFR was in 2004. About 25 of us met at a motel, gathering in the parking lot outside one of the units. The meal was catered on the patio of the restaurant next door. Ages ranged that year from four to 94. We came from Hawaii, California, Nevada, Ohio, Nebraska, Arizona, and South Dakota. I miss those reunions and the adventures we had getting there. For many summers after the last GFR, our grandsons visited for the summer. We did road trips to and from their home. We detoured whenever we found something interesting. Motel pools were mandatory. Now they’re working and going to school; summer trips are spent hanging out with them at home. Gatherings happen occasionally, mainly for weddings, funerals, or special visitors. Good times!

Vehicle Fuel Efficiency

Tips to Run Better and Cheaper

By Linda Sutherland

I’m sure you’re not surprised to hear that fuel for our vehicles is in the skyrocket zone these days. Many consumers are choosing more fuel-efficient vehicles. The smaller the car, the better the mileage you will likely get. Electric vehicles (EVs) run on electricity only, and hybrids alternate between gas and electric power—both cut down on trips to the pump. However, there are simple ways that you can improve your gas mileage even if you can’t afford a new car at the moment. As many wise people have said,“Every little bit helps.” You can start by lightening the load in your vehicle. Pro Pet Grooming at Your Front Door

By Marge Shoemaker

Taking a child to the dentist or hairdresser can be a hassle. Taking more than one at the same time is a definite chore…especially when they’re young. It’s normal for kids to dread trips to places where strange noises, smells, and surroundings are often intimidating. Those of us who have furry, fourlegged members in our families know that everything I’ve just said about kids is also true of our dogs! Bill Martens is a man who sees a need and tries to fill it. Bill has three dogs: two shih tzus (Little Boy and Keno) and a chihuahua (Mr. Happy). Even though his dogs are small, Bill found it a chore getting them to a groomer. “Taking them one at a time was time-consuming,” he recalls. “Wrangling all three at once posed a definite challenge!” His own frustrating experience seeded the idea of rigging a van and having a qualified groomer go to the customer. His idea came to fruition in October of 2016, when he founded Clip n’ Go. “Mobile pet care is a convenient service for people who have multiple dogs, for senior citizens, for people with disabilities, for busy professionals—even for people who simply don’t drive,” Bill notes. It’s also great for pets who don’t like to travel. We’ve all seen dogs balk at getting in a car, usually because it’s associated with a previous unpleasant experience. “Mobile grooming allows the dog to stay in a familiar setting,” Bill explains. “It’s less stressful for everyone involved.” That familiarity is why he’s glad that talented groomer Maria Palacio has been with him from the beginning. “Maria is particular about her work,” he asserts. “Her clients are all special to her.” When dogs roll on the ground or lick and chew their fur, they are trying to keep clean. To maintain a healthy coat, they need a little help—and that’s where regular dog grooming comes in. Bill advises professional grooming about every six weeks. Regular brushing spreads natural oils, removes dirt, prevents tangles, and keeps skin clean and irritant-free. Brushing also helps with shedding, which is a normal process for dogs. (The amount of shedding depends on health, breed, and season.) Regular bathing can forestall skin problems. A dog’s skin condition is an indication of overall health. Skin problems, often indicated by excessive scratching, chewing, or licking, can have a wide range of causes. External parasites, infections, allergies, metabolic problems, stress, or a combination of these may be to blame. Grooming time is also an excellent time to check for fleas and other pests. Just as human babies need regular checkups, our pets need regular care for their teeth, eyes, and ears.

Getting your dog’s teeth Owner Bill Martens brushed on a regular basis keeps the whole mouth healthy. As in humans, bacteria and plaque-forming foods may cause an unhealthy buildup of tartar in a dog’s mouth, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Regular mouth cleaning also helps keep your dog’s breath more pleasant. Maria will check your dog’s eyes during each grooming session, as well. Tearing, cloudiness, inflammation, or excessive discharge may indicate a health problem. Regular ear checks are important for dogs who produce excessive earwax or have a lot of inner-ear hair. Non-professional attendance to these problems may cause injury or make a problem worse. “Our groomers always alert the owner to any problems they find,” Bill assures us. “We’re groomers, not veterinarians. We’ll send you to a vet when necessary.” Paw care is also vital for happy, healthy dogs. Paw pads cushion and protect bones and joints from shock. They provide insulation in cold weather, aid walking on rough surfaces, and protect the paw tissue. Regular inspections guard against wounds, infections, or foreign objects that may become lodged between a dog’s toes. Nails should be trimmed regularly before they touch the ground or get snagged. The paws of pampered indoor pets may require more nail attention than pups who often play outdoors or run on hard surfaces. Bill knows how particular pet owners can be about their pooches—after all, he has three dogs of his own! Bill looks for groomers who truly love animals, are particular about the job they do, and will spend the time needed to make each dog’s visit a happy one. It’s just what we expect from the hairdressers who cut our own hair, Bill notes. “We don’t want someone working on us doing a rush job and making mistakes. If Maria takes a longer-than-average time grooming a client, I know it’s for a good reason,” he says proudly. “Grooming is hard but rewarding work!” Clip n’ Go can be found online at clipngoomaha.net. If you think bringing your dog’s groomer right to your door would make life easier for you and your dog, call 402-669-6876 to make an appointment.

Floral Visionary

Pursuing Passion by Bringing Joy

By Deborah Daley

A visionary is someone who plans for the future with imagination and wisdom. Visionaries embrace their dreams and are tenaciously determined. Rose McCormick, the owner of Beyond the Vine, is a local business woman who fits this description. Her faith, passion, dedication, creativity, and commitment to service have led to a successful career and business ownership for more than 37 years. As a young girl, Rose often visited the Old Market with her mother and was fascinated by the art and cultural experiences. The 10-year-old discovered an intriguing plant store and knew she had found her calling. She began collecting plants and visualizing her plans. At 15, she got her first job at a flower shop, in the Brandeis department store, and her journey in the floral industry began. “My first boss knew about my plans to open a plant store, and he encouraged me to own a flower shop, instead,” Rose recalls. “He said that people always need flowers in their lives because flowers are

used to celebrate all occasions.” To pursue this dream, Rose Rose McCormick Owner attended Kansas State University, which was one of only three colleges at that time that offered a degree in floriculture. A golf scholarship paid her tuition. Later, she earned a degree in business management from the University of Omaha while working in various flower shops. At age 23, Rose was given an opportunity to buy a

flower shop within the Younkers store at the Center Mall, but there were obstacles to overcome before she could make her vision a reality. First of all, she was quite young, which made her a less-than-optimal applicant for a business loan. That wasn’t the only hurdle. “Banks, at that time, did not enthusiastically support women owning their own businesses,” Rose shares. “Despite having a robust marketing and operational plan and comprehensive financial projections, many financial institutions pushed me to have my dad cosign the loan. I did not want that. Luckily, Omaha National Bank had confidence in me.” This early experience has made Rose a passionate advocate for women-owned companies, and she often mentors those who are just starting out. She is happy to share some advice for others trying to run a successful endeavor. “Find your passion and pursue it with all your heart,” she advises. “You have to know your financial numbers, invest in advertising and marketing, design a quality plan, and be patient. Give yourself four years to build a profit.” Rose persevered and bought that first flower shop in 1985. She expanded her efforts throughout the years and added interior dressings to the business portfolio. Finally, the ardent Catholic opened a shop outside of Younkers in 2003 and had the opportunity to decide on a fitting name. “I decided on Beyond the Vine for three reasons,” she explains. “Spiritually, the Bible declares that Jesus is the vine and we are merely the branches. As a designer, I recognize that I merely create with the talents that God gave me. Second, we use our talents to style gifts of Mother Nature that

are grown on vines to create signature arrangements. Third, my business had evolved beyond just flowers to include accessories and home furnishings.” In 2015, she opened the doors at Beyond the Vine’s current location: 13206 Grover Street. The 4,000-square-foot retail showroom features a floral shop as well as space spotlighting affordable furniture, wall art, candles, lamps, home accessories, and much more. Rose shares her approach to the business and customers. “I build relationships with my clientele. I want to build joy in their lives and be of service. Very simply, the Holy Spirit moves me,” she adds. Her customers rave about her personal and hands-on approach and feel it differentiates Beyond the Vine from other businesses. Tom and Sue Naso started using her services in 2020. “Sue and I built a new villa in July 2020,” says Tom. “We wanted to accessorize our home and heard about Beyond the Vine via word of mouth. We purchased a cabinet, a silk fern, pictures, and floral arrangements. Since then, we have been back six times, and Rose has made several personal visits to the house to assist with our efforts. She has a keen sense for décor and also has a photographic memory.” Beyond the Vine is open Monday through Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and has special hours during Christmas. You can phone the shop at 402-397-4585 or visit at 13206 Grover Street. To shop from home or learn more about Beyond the Vine’s floral services for weddings and other events, visit gobeyondthevine.com. Rose ships her products all over the world.

Peak Performance

Infertility

Causes and Treatment

By Loretta McCollum

Starting a family is one of life’s milestones, and for most women and men, the journey to parenthood is relatively smooth. For others, however, not being able to conceive is a disappointing reality. It’s estimated that 10 to 15 percent of couples face infertility. The good news is that infertility is a challenge that can often be overcome with medical treatments, procedures, lifestyle changes, or some combination of the three. Infertility is defined as the inability to become pregnant despite having unprotected sex for at least one year. It can be caused by problems with the female reproductive system, the male reproductive system, or both. In order for a pregnancy to occur, males must produce healthy sperm and females must produce healthy eggs. The female’s fallopian tubes must open so that the sperm can reach the egg, and the sperm must be able to fertilize the egg. There are several indicators of infertility. No success conceiving after trying for six months may indicate infertility in women aged 35 and older. Irregular, painful, or absent periods are a sign. Females who have been diagnosed with endometriosis are at risk, as are women who have had multiple miscarriages or have undergone treatment for cancer. For men, possible signs include a low sperm count, a history of testicular or prostate problems, small testicles, and prior cancer treatment. Infertility can result from a physical condition, lifestyle, or a combination of both. Lifestyle factors for both men and women include tobacco and alcohol use, being significantly overweight or underweight, lack of exercise, and certain medications. In females, ovulation disorders such as a hormonal imbalance that affects the release of eggs could be the culprit. Too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism), or too little (hypothyroidism), can affect the menstrual cycle, resulting in infertility. Cervical abnormalities or the presence of polyps in the cervix or uterus may block the fallopian tubes, preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. Pelvic adhesions such as scar tissue from appendicitis or abdominal surgery can also lead to infertility. For men, abnormal sperm production or function due to undescended testicles, genetic defects and diseases, infections, or diabetes can all affect sperm quality, as can enlarged veins in the testes. Sperm delivery issues resulting from premature ejaculation, a blockage in the testicle, or an injury to the reproductive organs may interfere with the ability to conceive. Some healthcare providers can perform a basic infertility evaluation; however, infertility is often best treated by specialists like reproductive endocrinologists or andrologists. A reproductive endocrinologist is a gynecologist with additional training in fertility treatment. They treat both male and female fertility issues. An andrologist is a urologist who has completed additional training in male fertility. 56

July 2022

Diagnosis of infertility may involve tests or medical procedures. For women, a blood test that measures hormone levels is typically performed to determine whether you’re ovulating. A hysterosalpingography (x-ray with contrast dye) evaluates the condition of your uterus and fallopian tubes to check for blockages or other problems. An ovarian test checks the health of the eggs. An ultrasound looks for uterine or ovarian disease. For males, a semen analysis is done to check viability. Hormone testing is also performed, and genetic testing may be done. A testicular biopsy may be utilized to identify any abnormalities. Treatment strategies depend upon age, overall health, medical history, and patient preference. Female infertility treatment often involves the use of fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation. In some instances, healthy sperm are placed directly into the uterus. Mature eggs may be harvested and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. This method is known as in vitro fertilization. If there are problems with the eggs or the sperm, donor eggs or sperm are sometimes used. Surgical procedures to remove polyps, fibroids, or pelvic adhesions can increase the likelihood of conceiving. Infertility in males can sometimes be reversed by surgically repairing a sperm blockage. Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology is a relatively new field, researched and developed over 30 years at Creighton University. The underlying principle is that of coordination of the female menstrual cycle. Following an initial consultation, patients are provided with the tools to chart biomarkers during their monthly cycle. After two months, hormone therapy or further testing may be recommended. A treatment plan will then be developed. Success rates with NaPro Technology are comparable to other infertility treatments. The bottom line is that if you and your partner are struggling with infertility, don’t give up! Contact a specialist for more information on these and other treatment options. Also, remember that you’re not alone, no matter how lonely you may feel. Infertility is not uncommon, and support groups can help you navigate the process of trying to start a family. Home Works

Windows and Doors

When to Replace and Who to Hire

By Anne Yankus

If you own a home, chances are good that you’ll end up replacing your windows and doors sooner or later. After all, they are the main entry and exit points in your home, they have moving parts, and they get a lot of use, so they’re bound to wear out over time. Even before they do, you may feel the need to change the look of a room or the whole exterior of the house with new doors and windows. The first factor to consider is the cost. Replacement windows can vary widely in cost, from $100 to several hundred dollars per window, plus the cost of labor. To find your general budget, walk through your home and count the windows in each room—you may have more than you thought! Door replacements can cost up to a couple thousand dollars, including labor. Next, you’ll want to explore style options. Windows come in a wide variety of styles, including single-hung, double-hung, sliding, casement/awning, picture, architectural shapes, acrylic block, hopper, bay, garden, and impact. Common framing materials, from most to least expensive, include wood, fiberglass, and vinyl. Doors can come in a nearly infinite variety of styles. Aside from the pre-manufactured styles you can purchase at the store, many door makers accept customized special orders. The most commonly used door materials are wood, steel, fiber-

glass-composite, and aluminum. You should also consider door hardware and any smart home security tech and locks that you want to include. If you weren’t already sold on the idea of replacing your windows and doors for aesthetic reasons, you should definitely consider changing them out for the energy-efficiency benefits! Energy.gov reports that 25 to 30 percent of a home’s energy bill can be traced directly to heat gain/loss from the windows, so it’s imperative to make sure your windows and doors are upto-date with the latest in energy efficiency. All new windows should have Energy Star and National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) labels on them detailing that model’s energy rating. If you live in a colder climate, look for gas-filled windows with low-e coatings to reduce heat loss and a low U-factor for thermal resistance. For warmer climates, check for windows with coatings that will reduce heat gain and have low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) scores.

Positive Perspective

Fake It ’til You Make It!

By Janet Van deWalle

You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile

Do you want to feel better? Do you want to be happier? Do you want to reduce your stress level? Reduce your pain level? Then smile, smile, smile! “Smile; it’s free therapy.” —Douglas Horton I have a suggestion. Go look into a mirror. Frown, and then smile. Then frown. Then smile. Which expression feels better? Which one looks better? Watch where the wrinkles go when you smile! “Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.” —Francesca Reigler There have been lots and lots of studies done on the benefits of smiling. In fact, it’s been scientifically proven. Neurologist Dr. Isha Gupta has explained that a smile triggers neuropeptide hormones in our brains…the happy hormone dopamine and the stress-reducing hormone serotonin. If the benefits of smiling are so clear, why aren’t we all doing it on a more regular basis? It’s a simple little change in our muscles… not much extra energy there! It doesn’t take time or money, just a decision—a decision to smile instead of frown. “Smile at strangers and you just might change a life.” —Steve Maraboli

When you go to the grocery store, do you smile at other customers? When you are driving and pull up next to a car, do you smile at the people next to you? When you walk into a store or office building, do you smile at the people who work there? When you go to a movie theater, do you smile at the person sitting next to you? “There is fear when frowning. There is love when smiling.” —Maxime Lagacé Having a negative facial expression does not invite positive responses from the people that we meet. When we frown, those we come into contact with immediately put up their guard and feel uncomfortable. When you smile at a complete stranger, you literally can watch their body relax. More often than not, you get a smile back! “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” —Mother Teresa For the next three days, I would like you to do an experiment. Smile…all the time. Smile at your coworkers, at the mail carrier, at the clerk at the hardware store, at the server at the restaurant. At the end of three days, reflect on how you were received by those you came into contact with. It could be three of the best days you’ve had in some time!

“Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive, good things and good people will be drawn to you.” —Mary Lou Retton
