Looking for Big Foot

Yippee! It’s summertime! I love this time of year. I think it all goes back to when I was a kid and we were FREE for three months. There is something about July that jettisons me back to those days of freedom. The memories bring a smile to my face.

When I was a kid, our family would always take a family vacation in the summer. It didn’t make any difference what the money situation was. My dad owned his own company, and there were good years and then some not so good years. No difference. My dad, Big Al, was always able to pull something out of his hat to make it happen.

Most of the time, we would drive to Colorado and set up a tent camp. My parents were very social people, so typically there were several families who joined us. We would have camp fires, we would fish…and, since some of us were teenagers, we would sneak out at night to go exploring.

One of the most exciting adventures in Colorado was when a bunch of us decided that we would climb that mountain…in the dark…to see if we could make it. There were about a dozen of us. We took our flashlights and hiked upwards. My recollection is that we made it to the top just fine—going up wasn’t so bad. Coming down was a whole different story. Many of us fell. One of the boys lost his expensive prescription glasses. We got some cuts and bruises. The good news was that we made it back.

Now, none of the parents were thrilled about our adventure. Let’s face it, we were in the Rocky Mountains. Bears. Snakes. Big Foot! All kinds of wild critters. Yikes! If it had been my kids, I’m guessing that I would not have been very happy, either. Of course, we got in trouble, as we should have. I will tell you this, though: It’s one of the best memories I have of our family vacations!

I know that a lot of our summer vacations have changed. Many of us get on planes. Go to resorts. Go to camps. Have the entire trip planned out for us. I admit that I miss the kind of summer vacations we took in my childhood. The chance to be FREE to explore, to get a little crazy, and to not be on any kind of schedule at all. Now, that is the kind of summer vacation that creates memories that last a lifetime!

I hope you all have a wonderful vacation, whether it is a staycation, a road trip, a resort, or even camping. Create some great memories for the whole family this summer.

Positive Thought of the Month

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”—John

Red, White, and Blue Summer! Let’s Eat!

Patriot Pancakes

In a large bowl, mix 1/2 cup of blueberries and 1/2 cup of trimmed and chopped strawberries (or any seasonal fruit). Add 1 teaspoon of sugar and microwave for 1 minute. Remove and cool. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 cup of sugar. In another bowl, mix 2 eggs into 2 cups of buttermilk and stir in 1/4 cup of melted butter. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix lightly. Use a hot griddle or skillet to make pancakes (or waffles). Serve the pancakes with butter, the fruit syrup, and whipped cream.

Party BLT Dip for a Crowd

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine four 8-ounce blocks of softened cream cheese with 1 pound of crispy crumbled bacon, 5 sliced green onions, 1 cup of shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gouda, Havarti, pepper Jack—your choice), salt and pepper as desired, and 1 cup of chopped, seeded tomatoes. Mix for 5 minutes on low. Hollow out a round loaf of French or sourdough bread and fill the hole with the cream cheese mixture. Wrap in heavy foil. Heat in the oven for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Mix together 2 cups of shredded, cooked chicken with an 8-ounce block of softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup of ranch dressing, 1/2 cup of hot sauce, and salt and pepper (or any other dried spices) to taste. Pour into a serving dish and top with a few bleu cheese crumbles. Serve with chips, veggies, or toasted breads.

Chicken Breast Grillers

Slice 2 large, boneless, skinless chicken breasts butterfly style (that is, three quarters of the way through so the meat opens like a book). Season well with salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning. Place 1 Tablespoon of jam (apricot, strawberry, raspberry) inside the chicken, along with a slice of pineapple or jalapeno. Close. Wrap a piece of bacon around the breast. Place into a foil pouch, adding vegetables, if desired. Close the pouch and grill over medium heat for 25–30 minutes.

Calico Baked Picnic Beans

Mix together 1/2 pound of cooked and crumbled ground beef, 2 pieces of crispy crumbled bacon, 1 small chopped onion, 1 can of drained kidney beans, 1 can of drained navy or lima beans, 1 can of pork and beans, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 Tablespoon of mustard, 1/4 cup of ketchup, 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder, and 1/4 cup of barbecue sauce. Cook on low in a slow cooker for several hours or in a 325-degree oven for 2 hours.

Gluten-Free Peanut Butter Cookies

Mix 1 cup of peanut butter with 1 cup of sugar, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Portion into balls, roll in sugar, and use a fork to imprint each one with a crisscross. Bake on cookie sheets at 350 degrees for 10–12 minutes. Cool.

Shrimp Hong Kong Style

Heat 1 Tablespoon of canola oil in a skillet. Add 2 cloves of garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add 3–4 cups of spinach and cook for 5 minutes. Remove the spinach to a plate. Add 1 cup of soy sauce to the skillet, along with 3/4 cup of water, 3 Tablespoons of sugar, and 2 Tablespoons of rice vinegar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10–15 minutes. Add a bag of shrimp (uncooked, easypeel, thawed) and sauté for 4 minutes until cooked. Drizzle with 1 Tablespoon of toasted sesame oil. Serve shrimp on the bed of spinach, with the sauce. (Can also serve chilled.)

Homemade Coleslaw

Mix 2 cups of mayonnaise with 2 Tablespoons of sugar and 1 Tablespoon of vinegar. Chop one small head of cabbage or open 1–2 bags of pre-sliced cabbage slaw mix. Place the cabbage in a large bowl and stir in the dressing. Sprinkle in 2 teaspoons of celery seed. Adjust to taste. Refrigerate for several hours before serving.

Sweet Tea

Put 6 tea bags into a quart of hot water. Steep for 5 minutes. Pour the tea into a pitcher and add sugar to taste (start with 2 Tablespoons). Serve in tall glasses with lemon slices and lots of ice.

Grilled Corn

Peel back but do not remove the husks of fresh corn. Remove

the silks and rinse. Brush the corn with melted butter, chili powder, and salt and pepper. Re-wrap the husks. Put the corn on the grill over low heat for 15–20 minutes. Watch carefully and turn often. (If you would rather not use the husks, remove them in the first step. Wrap the cleaned and seasoned cobs in foil and cook them over medium heat on the grill.)

Holiday Apple Pie

For the crust (or use store-bought): Mix together 4 cups of flour, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cut 1 and 1/2 cups of lard into the flour until you get pea-sized pieces. Beat an egg in a bowl with 1/2 cup of cold water and 1 Tablespoon of vinegar. Sprinkle the wet ingredients over the flour mixture. Mix by hand or using a fork (you can also pulse in a food processor). Divide the dough in half. Pat into 2 disks and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out on a lightly floured counter. Line a pie dish with one of the rolled-out pastries.

For the filling: In a large bowl, combine 6 or 7 peeled, cored, sliced apples (Granny Smith, Braeburn, Jonathan, your choice). In another bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 2 Tablespoons of flour, 1 Tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and a bit of lemon zest. Toss the apples in this mixture.

Pour the apple mixture into the pastry-lined pie dish. Dot with some butter. Top with the second pastry. Flute edges and cut holes to vent. Brush egg wash on top and sprinkle with sanding sugar. Bake (with the pie plate on a cookie sheet) at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Lower the heat to 375 degrees and bake for another 30–35 minutes, until golden brown. Cool, slice, and pass the ice cream.

Easy, Breezy, Summer Fashion Get Ready

for Sunshine!

Finally, summer is here! Midwesterners always appreciate blue skies and the natural world unfolding before us. Now is the time when we are busy with weddings, showers, class reunions, cookouts, and parties. What to wear for all these occasions? Let’s take a look.

Summer is the time to get out the color! It’s also a great opportunity to experiment with the clothing we already have and find new outfits in the mix. Put together pastels in your closet that you have never worn together before. Some fun combinations to try are yellow with blue, green with pink, and tangerine with sky blue. Add a caramel brown belt and sandals to finish your on-trend look. Blue and brown work especially well together, combined with classic neutrals. Some fresh colors to add to your summer fun would be grass green, warm coral, or peony pink.

One of my favorite ways to dress in the summer is in a simple body-skimming dress. One and done is so easy— perfect for vacation. There is a comfy dress for every shape. An A-line dress

is universally flattering to all figures. Dresses can accentuate the positive and cover up what we consider our negatives. Many summer dresses are tiered with an elastic waist. Great for comfort!

Fabrics are innovative and user-friendly this year. We have always thought of polyester as a fabric that doesn’t breathe, but manufacturers have reinvented it for summer so that it resembles silk but does not have the negative properties of dry cleaning or spotting easily. Natural fabrics are always a good choice in summer. Cotton is the coolest of all, and linen blends have that fresh look of summer. One of the best things about this summer’s looks is to wear sneakers with dresses. It just works.

10 July 2023 Fashion Worthy

What are the top trends that are so wearable this summer? Loose, easy, and comfortable is the look to go for. Pants are looser, with wide or flared legs and pleated or elastic waists. Silky fabrics are innovative in cargo pants, joggers, and harem pants. These fabrics say “dressy,” but the style is sporty, so you can go either way with one of these modern pieces. Wear trendy sneakers for shopping or working and just change to platforms or heels for a date night. Tops are still focusing on billowy sleeves, which look so elegant! They are cooler, too, as air can flow around your arms.

Jackets are always a necessity in the Midwest. We love our air conditioning, and that means that restaurants, movie theaters, even grocery stores are decidedly chilly. The ever-popular denim jacket has been the ticket for years, as it works with absolutely everything. Try one in a new bright color this year— even white!

Blazers have been making a comeback for the past few seasons and are still going strong. A light, linen blend blazer would be a great alternative to a denim jacket. A shorter, more fitted blazer would be good with a dress or skirt, while a longer, oversized blazer would be the correct silhouette with a pant. Add a throwback crochet top or sweater, or try a lacy kimono in your summer wardrobe. These pieces are versatile and add a bit of personality to your outfit. For a tailored, put-together business look, the pant suit is back in a big way. Try a two-piece matching suit in green or pink. The look is on point this year. Complete this outfit with a blue or white top underneath for the freshest look of the season.

My three suggestions for the items you absolutely must have this summer? My top go-getter is a white tank top. (If you are not a sleeveless person, try a white top with elbow-length sleeves.) In a pinch or a hurry, you can mix it with any bottoms and look fresh and summery. A scoop neck or V-neck are the most flattering to most people.

I would say my second must-have item is a pair of cool athletic shoes. I have spent many an hour hunting for the perfect sneakers to go with everything. Look for ones that are lightweight with a cushy sole. White is the preference, but add some colors if you like a selection in your closet.

My third essential item is a new fun denim jacket. Wear it over your favorite throw-on dress, and you’re set for summer.

The joy of summer keeps us smiling, whether we are leisurely strolling to the ice cream shop, swinging on a shady porch, enjoying a staycation, or basking in a lush garden at a special destination. Wherever summer takes you, make some memories to cherish all year long.

Spezia Welcomes Mike Vetsch Building Community With Great Food

Mike Vetsch is the new General Manager of Spezia, and he is thrilled to be part of the team. A passion for the restaurant business was instilled in him by his mother, who owned a German cafe in their hometown of Aberdeen, South Dakota. One of her specialties was kuchen, a German cake that combines the creaminess of cheesecake and the crumbly goodness of coffee cake with a spread of fresh fruit on top. When Mike recalls her homemade cake, the happiness of his childhood brushes across his face like a kiss from his mother.

Prior to joining the Spezia team, Mike managed Minervas Restaurants for 10 years in South Dakota. Many restaurants did not survive the pandemic, and Mike attributes Spezia’s success to the positive work environment and loyal team nurtured by Brian Reilly, who is Spezia’s Executive Chef and co-owner. Chef’s ability to pivot during tumultuous times helped keep Spezia alive during the pandemic to thrive again today.

Anyone who works in the restaurant industry can tell you that staff turnover is a constant challenge. While Spezia isn’t immune to turnover, they don’t have the issues that many other restaurants do. Many of Spezia’s staff members have been there for years—as long as 20 years! The stability of Spezia’s team is reflected in the restaurant’s consistent, high-quality service and its long list of reservations. Chef understands the difficult hours better than anyone and strives to provide his team with a work-life balance. The result is a supportive work environment that feels like a community.

The community spirit is a big draw for Mike. He has a friendly, energetic, come-sit-at-mytable vibe and creates a community everywhere he goes. It is one of the reasons he loves the restaurant business. During the pandemic, Mike worked briefly in transportation logistics. He learned a lot and appreciated his time there, but the restaurant business called him back. When patrons from his years working at Flatiron or Hiro 88 find him at Spezia, they greet him with a hug, and Mike feels like he is home.

Mike enjoys cooking, bartending, and experimenting with new concepts and fresh ideas. He created a fun contest for the staff at Spezia. Each person creates their own cocktail for everyone to taste, and then the team selects the winning cocktail to become the featured drink. Even with all the inventive cocktails that Mike has sampled and made, his go-to favorites are still an old fashioned or a black Manhattan.

Mike’s favorites at Spezia are the wood-grilled rack of lamb, infused with herbs and tender smoky goodness, and the French Acadian chicken, a Cajun-spiced chicken breast served

over linguine with a creamy Cajun sauce. Mike greeted me with a tiramisu handmade by Chef. It was decadent, with the perfect amount of coffee-cocoa flavor to balance the creamy mascarpone and sweet spongy cake. I would have devoured it in seconds if it weren’t for Mike’s engaging conversation.

Mike strikes me as the “glass is half full of Chianti” type who easily finds solutions to problems as they arise. It’s an important skill for someone who manages a full team in the ever-changing restaurant business. He describes his role as similar to that of a professional swimmer, where the only thing onlookers see is an athlete gliding effortlessly through the water. Underneath, the swimmer is paddling furiously with athletic skill.

Mike, too, values a work-life balance. He and his husband spend their free time gardening, taking their Australian shepherds for walks and to the dog park, and spending time with family. When Mike talks about his upcoming zoo trip with his nieces and nephews, I again see happiness wash over him. Spezia is lucky to have a manager who is as positive and vibrant as he is skilled and professional.

In addition to the dining room, Spezia has two party rooms that are popular for weddings, receptions, holidays, and corporate events. One of them has a beautiful private patio. Spezia can accommodate parties of 30 to 80 guests between the two rooms. To inquire about booking a private room for events, email them at events@speziarestaurant.com.

Spezia is open for lunch seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They open again for dinner at 4:00 p.m. daily. Spezia is located at 3125 South 72nd Street, just south of Center Street. Reservations can be made online through their website, speziarestaurant.com, or Open Table. For parties of five or more, it is best to call 402-391-2950 to make your reservation.

Don’t Be Afraid!

Take Advantage of Opportunities

Do you take advantage of opportunities that come your way? People are often afraid to try something new or seize an opportunity because it is out of their comfort zone. Being open to opportunity is important! Remember, an opportunity may not be exclusive to you—others might move on that possibility and you will lose out. Taking risks is difficult, but it helps to have a positive attitude and to consider new things that come your way.

My own career is a study in seizing opportunity. As an undergrad at Creighton University, I studied speech/drama and was planning to teach high school with my education degree. To help with college costs, I signed up for work study and supported the Public Relations Department. The discipline fascinated me, and I decided to add journalism to my major portfolio. A double major meant I had to carefully plan my four years of study and manage my time better. I did an internship with a small, woman-owned PR agency in Omaha during my senior year that led to a full-time position after graduation. That decision—to add another major—was the first time I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and was rewarded with career success.

Several years later, I was working at the American Red Cross in Omaha as the Public Relations Director. I was asked to make a speech on marketing the organization’s

about

Services to the Armed Forces (SAF) to a group of directors of those services. After the presentation, a white-haired lady came backstage and told me she wanted to send me to Europe because she found my enthusiasm and ideas infectious and just what was needed. I thought perhaps she was senile. How could someone offer me such a job? My new boss told me she was a Vice President at the Red Cross headquarters in Washington, DC, and was serious. The next morning, I was offered a job based in Stuttgart, Germany, as the Public Relations Director for the European Théâtre.

Here I was, a 26-year-old with the opportunity of a lifetime. However, I was frightened. I had never been further west than Denver and had been to DC only once, on a school bus trip. They wanted me to go live in a country where people spoke a different language. I would have to make a fouryear commitment, away from family and friends. I had a

great job in Omaha, and it would have been easy to stay, but I knew I would kick myself if I didn’t try. I accepted their offer, and I have never regretted it.

I went on an incredible adventure. During my time there, I met amazing people. I had conversations with dignitaries, visited multiple countries, and elevated the brand awareness of the Red Cross. I learned to be independent, expand my understanding of the world, try new things, learn other cultures and languages, and explore the world. At times, it was challenging and frightening, but the positive impact it had on me and my career was priceless.

After four years, my initial commitment to the organization was up. They wanted me to stay in Europe. Staying with the Red Cross was the logical choice, but I wanted to go back to the United States. I took a risk and landed a job back in DC, where I worked hard for more than two decades. Again, my decision to take the slightly-less-than logical choice afforded me life-changing experiences and an amazing career.

With my parents getting older, I decided to move back to the Omaha area before I was a senior citizen myself. I loved my job but knew this was the right thing to do. My sister saw an ad for Public Relations Director for Creighton University and said I should go for it. I interviewed and got the job. It was another opportunity grabbed, and I am glad I did it. It brought me right back where I started.

I share these life examples to let readers know that it’s important to consider opportunities even if they feel intimidating. Here are some simple items to remember:

• Opportunities don’t come by every day. If you hesitate, they may be gone.

• Don’t let fear stifle you. Successful people take advantage of opportunities. Be open to change!

• Focus on your goals. I loved my career and knew some of the decisions I made would give me the chance to learn more, both personally and professionally. That was important to me.

Not every opportunity will be right for you, but knowing yourself and what you want is key. Saying yes to yourself, when it is right, can make all the difference!

Down the street, across the country, around the world—you help save the day. Every day. Your help is needed now more than ever. Visit redcross.org.

Buoyant Family Services

Are you carrying extras like depression, pain, trauma, general malaise, or addiction? Anyone can feel isolated or alone, even in a world of eight billion people, each of us struggling to make sense of our anxieties or choices. Maybe you have experienced trauma and are still wrestling with the aftermath. If you are facing issues big or small, old or new, Dr. Betty Kola of Buoyant Family Services can offer help.

The name of the counseling services that Dr. Kola founded—Buoyant Family Services—reflects her philosophy about mental health. Dr. Kola believes that, even in times of struggle, buoyancy can be achieved with therapy and counseling, and she is here to help clients rise up. With help and effort, clients can deal with trauma or situations that prevent them from living their best life. “Basic health care should include mental health care,” Dr. Kola asserts. “We have a situation in this country of a vast need for accessible care for all. Hopefully, the situation is improving.” Dr. Kola is here to do her part!

Buoyant Family Services, located in Suite 106 in the Center Mall at 1941 South 42nd Street, was founded by Dr. Kola seven years ago. She had observed people dealing with weighty issues, many who had moved here from another country and were struggling to adapt to a new environment while also dealing with the past. She was motivated to help people manage their mental health. “I did not even have a desk when we opened,” she recalls. “The generosity of the Center’s owner helped me get started. He believed in me. I had very little to begin my practice, but he found me a desk, and here we are, seven years later!”

Dr. Kola, a native of Kenya, holds a Doctorate in International Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, a master’s degree in Mental Health Clinical Counseling from Bellevue University, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from Madurai Kamaraj University in India. She has engaged in international field experiences in Peru and Rwanda, focusing on forgiveness. “Without forgiveness, we cannot move ahead toward healing.”

Dr. Kola paints a simple but powerful picture of the challenges that many of us have in dealing with daily trauma, insecurities, anxieties, or inability to cope in today’s polarizing world. “Many people take on the role of victim and struggle to move on to healing. A client’s willingness to ask for help, and then obtain the knowledge to conquer their situation—that leads to healing.”

In therapy, Dr. Kola asks her clients to do several things,

but first to picture themselves driving a bus. “Have you ever seen two drivers driving a bus? No—there is only one. Think of the bus as your life. You are the driver. You decide what road to take, which passengers are allowed on the bus and for how long. You decide who to kick off the bus if they are unruly. If the bus is not headed to a desirable destination, you are in charge of changing its route.” Dr. Kola and her team direct their clients to change habits, thus changing the future.

Buoyant Family Services treats people of all ages. “Many people need help and counseling,” says Dr. Kola. “We want to take away any stigma that asking for help or admitting to a mental health issue is a sign of weakness. The number one blocker that prevents people toward healing is that stigma!” On the contrary, she says, it is acknowledging and accepting help that gives you the tools you need to work toward solving your problem and beginning a new chapter of your life. “People with hopelessness and despair need to know that they have a safe place to come and be heard and to heal,” she states. Buoyant Family Services can be that place.

There is a no wait-list policy at Buoyant Family Services, and most insurance is accepted. Dr. Kola is confident that no matter your age, situation, or past behavior, seeking help is a brave and available option. “We never shut down during the pandemic,” she recalls, “and we are still here, working to help our clients with their daily struggles. My most rewarding moments are when someone who arrived in distress comes out the other side of trauma and becomes a more confident and powerful human being. They no longer view themselves as a victim, but rather as someone in charge of their future.”

Dr. Betty Kola and the care team at Buoyant Family Services can help you take control of that bus and head down the road to a brighter future. Call 402-933-7577 to make an appointment or email them at buoyantfamilyservices@gmail.com.

Building a Home Plan, Budget, and Be Patient!

The housing market is extremely volatile, with very little home inventory and seesaw mortgage rates. At the same time, inventory limitations mean that homes don’t always meet all your requirements. Under these conditions, it’s no wonder that many Americans have chosen to invest in a custom-built home. Some key things to remember before embarking on such a project include having a comprehensive plan, establishing a budget, working with the right professionals, being involved in every step of the process, and getting everything in writing.

Before you build a house, consider how long you plan to stay in the home. If it’s your forever home, make sure you plan for the future in the design. On the other hand, life can change—you may still have to sell it someday. Make sure there is resale value. A home that is too customized could work against you later.

Two important decisions will inform the rest of your choices about your home. First, you have to choose a patch of land. Second, you need to find a trusted builder to design your layout.

Some custom homebuilders can help you find your dream homesite. If you’ve already found a homesite, ask your homebuilder if they can inspect your land.

When choosing a contractor, there are many factors to consider. Be sure to look at their portfolio of finished homes. Even better—ask to tour a model. Do they have experience building the style of home that you desire?

Speak with past clients about their experience with the contractor. A reputable company will be happy to provide references. Ask to see proof of their licensure and insurance. Again, a reputable company will have no problem providing this documentation.

Open communication is a vital part of a positive homebuilding experience. Find out how the contractor plans to communicate with you during the design and building process. How will you be kept up to date on construction? How welcome will you be on site? Who will be performing quality assurance inspections during construction? What is the process for making changes to the plans during construction? It’s important to know when changes can be made and how much it will cost to do so.

Don’t forget the final details! Some builders offer landscaping in the home design process; some do not. Find out how you’ll be choosing things like finishing materials and fixtures. If something breaks after you move in, will they fix it? Make sure you have their warranty period in writing.

Once you have chosen a builder, your task is to be patient. According to the US Census Bureau, the average new homebuilding process takes approximately seven to eight months. This timeframe includes finalizing plans and obtaining permits, the actual construction of the home, and the final walkthrough.

Costs to build vary with the complexity and design of your home. The average cost to build a home is between $250,000 and $420,000. The cost of your home, of course, will depend on where you live and the size of the build, along with how expensive your materials and fixtures are.

The foundation is one of the most expensive investments of the homebuilding process and is also one of the most expensive parts of the home to fix. Take your time! Discuss materials and structure with your contractor. Though the foundation is perhaps less exciting than interior decorating, it is, frankly, more important. The right foundation can keep you and your family safe during natural disasters. Other important elements are wiring, storage space, and practical fixtures. Make sure switches and outlets are going to be convenient for daily use. If there are places you have always wanted outlets, like under the sink or on the back patio, the design phase is the moment to bring them up. Before any planning or designs or contracts are signed, however, determining a budget is critical. Many builders have sample budget sheets that can help with this. As part of the budgeting process, consider how long you’ll need to maintain two households during the construction process.

When you develop a budget for a new home, you might want to start by asking yourself how expensive it will be to build the home you want. Perhaps the better question is: How expensive a home can you afford to build? In other words, determine what cash you can or are willing to put into your home and how much you can afford in monthly payments to cover whatever money you need to borrow.

By knowing your income, your monthly debt obligations, and how much cash you are going to put up, a lender or real estate agent can use their knowledge of current insurance rates, property taxes, and standard amortization (payment) tables to help you work backwards to find out how much home you can afford (total price). If you take your monthly payment and divide it by the sum of all your monthly income, the number you come up with should not exceed 0.33 to 0.36, depending on the percentage of the cost of the home you are planning to borrow. When you move in, you want to enjoy your home! You don’t want that enjoyment overshadowed by

the stress of being in over your head on housing costs.

New home trends continue to evolve, with more homeowners looking for unique features, fully functional living spaces, and luxurious designs.

Energy-efficient technology continues to advance, and many homeowners are looking to reduce costs where possible. This can include installing energy-efficient windows and lighting as well as HVAC equipment with digital thermostats to provide homeowners with the efficiency they want from modern homes. If energy efficiency is important to you, ask about the sustainability features your homebuilder can provide.

Homebuilders and consumers alike have turned away from mass-produced building materials. For example, the once-popular laminate countertop has, in many cases, been replaced with finer and longer-lasting options such as quartz or granite.

Recent years have also witnessed a rise in dynamic space designs geared toward household growth. People building homes today are considering their future needs, like space for aging parents to live. Open and flexible floor plans allow homeowners to create spaces that match their lifestyles. Common main floor features include primary bedroom suites, guest suites, dens, and studies that homeowners can use as needed. Gone are the formal spaces such as formal living rooms and dining rooms. Today, homeowners prefer open spaces designed to bring people together, such as open kitchens and family rooms.

Most builders have an array of plans that can be customized to your wants and needs. If you want a completely customized home, you may need an architect. Remember

Introducing Concierge Aesthetics

that this is an additional cost. Home design magazines and architects’ websites enable you to view their work and often provide insight into the architects’ general approach to projects as well as their contact information. If you’re planning to work with an architect, be sure to ask many of the same questions you would ask a contractor about their past work, references, and licensure.

In much the same way, you can decide if you want to hire a landscape designer or interior designer. Interior designers can save time and energy, as they know how to take accurate measurements and find the right furniture to fit their clients’ lifestyles. Designers can also give you exclusive discounts on products, and they have industry connections to other professionals you might want to consult, like landscape architects.

Many builders offer basic landscape design, but if you want your yard to be as custom-built and delightful as your home, you might want to hire your own landscape designer. Experienced landscape designers will be able to quickly and accurately determine whether an area has too much sun exposure for your plans or your irrigation system won’t reach where you want to plant an herb garden. By hiring an expert, you can avoid costly and time-consuming mistakes and see results more quickly.

Building a new home is a monumental task that should not be taken lightly. Know from the start that building a new home takes time, patience, and money. With the right team of professionals, an appropriate budget, and a willingness to go with the flow, the end result can be a dream come true.

River or Yacht? Your Next Luxury Escape

Let me tell you something: If you have not taken a European river cruise, you are missing out! Now, we have another cruising option to hit the mainstream—yacht cruising. Are you ready to step up your cruising experience? Major companies like Ritz-Carlton, Emerald, Scenic, and, soon to come, Four Seasons all charter their own yachts. With so many options, how do you decide which is best for your travel taste and budget?

Considering the itineraries is a good way to get started. Where in the world do you want to go? Do you want to relax and admire the scenery? Improve your culinary, golf, or painting skills? Be involved in an active or adventurous vacation? Wherever you want to go, one of these cruises can take you there.

Four Seasons Yachts plans its inaugural journey for late 2025. The first itineraries for the Four Seasons Yacht will include exclusive ports of call throughout the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. They want to provide guests with travel to unique and exclusive destinations often featured in the private yacht world while allowing for immersive local experiences. Optional extensions will be offered, combining itineraries with stays at Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has been off and running since the inaugural October 2022 sailing of Evrima . Most voyages range from seven to 10 nights, with no two journeys alike. New-to-cruise guests who are familiar with the Ritz-Carlton brand want to experience these destinations in a different way, and their Yacht Collection is excited to deliver on these authentic travel experiences.

Not only were they the first luxury hotel brand to expand to sea, but the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection continues to see strong demand. The second ship, Ilma , is slated to take its first voyage in September 2024 and is already open for reservations.

Emerald Cruises is a fantastic option, as it offers both river and ocean yacht cruises. An abundance of space can be found aboard the Azzurra and Sakara luxury yachts. They have been designed to allow access to smaller ports that others of their type cannot reach. This is intimate yacht cruising at its finest, as they sail into the heart of some of the most exciting destinations of the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic Sea, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean and Central America.

Guests love the intimate but spacious size of these ships. With just 50 cabins, the yacht fills quickly—but with Sakara , the line’s second yacht, launching in August, capacity will double. Emerald’s “Epic Voyages” combine two or three itineraries which perfectly complement each other to create an even longer cruising experience, full of fascinating stops

along the way. That means you can book both a river and a yacht cruise in one trip and have it all! Active travelers love Emerald because, on all of their sailings, guests can choose from multiple EmeraldACTIVE excursions like hiking, biking, and kayaking. They also offer wellness coaches and onboard classes like yoga and Pilates.

Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, in my opinion, is a cruising company here to blow your mind. They, too, offer both river and yacht cruises. Are you a serious food and wine lover? Then definitely book the French culinary river cruise, where you will “discover the elegant art of French cooking.” If you are looking for excitement and awe-inspiring moments, take a look at their Scenic Eclipse fleet or Discovery Yachts, where they take ocean cruising to a whole new level. Get a glimpse by watching the Discovery Channel’s “Maritime Masters: Expedition Antarctica,” which is filmed aboard a Scenic ship.

What are some differences between river and yacht cruises? The river cruises sail you through the heart of Europe and tend to be more structured, with included tours at every port. They are likely to attract multi-generational travelers. The yacht sailings call on cities, villages, and beaches and offer more time for guests to explore on their own. Passengers generally skew a bit younger.

The most popular itinerary on Emerald is the Danube Delight. You will visit Vienna and Budapest. Guests also love Portugal’s Douro River. Fun fact: Emerald Cruises and Scenic are the only river lines that dock on the Porto side of the river.

On the ocean, Mediterranean and Adriatic sailings have been the hot tickets. If you plan to do a yacht cruise in the fall, opt for the Caribbean or Central America. Basically, these cruises are going to dock you close to the action, giving you more opportunity to explore independently and off the beaten track. I always recommend using an experienced travel agent who will direct you toward your next best vacation.

Facial Surgery Institute

Expert Care for Facial Issues

Knowledge, experience, and empathy are three words that aptly describe Bruce Kuhn, MD, DDS, and his clinic, Facial Surgery Institute. This physician/dentist has owned his own practice for 35 years. The full-scope Facial Surgery Institute offers one of the largest arrays of services in the Midwest in oral and cosmetic surgery.

Oral surgery services include dental implants, bone grafting, and wisdom tooth removal—this takes up about 50 percent of the practice. For another 25 percent of their patients, they provide surgical procedures to address facial trauma, TMJ disorder, sleep apnea, and misaligned jaws. Facial cosmetic services are the remaining 25 percent of their practice and include facial surgery, brow endoscopic lift and eyelid surgery, ear surgery, nose surgery, laser skin resurfacing, BOTOX treatment, and facial fillers. Dr. Kuhn sees about 1,000 patients a year.

Dr. Kuhn’s interest in dentistry arose at a very young age. “My friend and I played dentist when we were young,” he recalls with a smile. “We thought being a dentist was fun, was a way to help people, and was a way to make a good living. We both went into the field and remain friends to this day.”

He found the path to oral surgery later in life, when he was already training to be a dentist. “While I was in dental school, one of my mentors had to break someone’s jaw and move it into the right place,” he recalls. “It was amazing to me. He was from South Africa and was using screws, instead of wire, which was an innovation at the time. I realized then and there that it was what I was meant to do.”

Dr. Kuhn attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for dental school and the University of Nebraska Medical Center for medical school. He also earned a fellowship in facial plastic surgery from the University of South Dakota in Bismarck. That’s an additional 14 years of education after high school to become the expert he is today.

Dr. Kuhn’s belief in education and his dedication to patients is also exemplified by his commitment to his profession. He is the only oral surgeon on staff at Children’s Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Ortho Nebraska, and the Nebraska Medical Center. He has also taught at Nebraska Medical Center for 20 years. “I did not get into this field to be a 9-to-5 type of professional. I want to be there when my patients need me.”

He is happy to point out several technological advances that have changed the “face” of oral surgery and enhanced his services. “Dental implants have been the greatest advancement in the field. They can have a profound effect on

someone with teeth issues who might not smile because they are ashamed of their mouth. Unlike dentures, implants last, and they give the patient a normal biting force.”

Another advancement has been the use of 3-D printing. Gone are the days of taking tedious impressions. “With 3-D printing, you can put data in a computer to fix a jawline, for instance, and it can calculate to a hundredth of a millimeter what needs to be done.”

Speaking with Dr. Kuhn, you can feel his passion for his work and his commitment to his patients. “Each person that comes to see me has a concern, maybe pain, perhaps a misconfiguration, maybe discomfort with their looks,” he says. “Each individual has their own set of circumstances. They come because they want an expert opinion on the best course of action. Together, we figure out that plan. My greatest reward is seeing the satisfaction on someone’s face when we can take care of that concern.”

Melanie Jones, formerly of Omaha, learned about Dr. Kuhn through an ad in this very publication. She was uncomfortable with her lower face and neck and wanted a lift. “Bruce has a fantastic bedside manner, and his staff are friendly and dedicated to excellence,” she says. “He explained the steps in the procedure, and there were no hard sales. I love the outcome and the way I look.”

Facial Surgery Institute is the only clinic in the state of Nebraska that is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC). “The significance of this is that—every three years—we are rigorously inspected, and our procedures, equipment, and staff are reviewed by healthcare experts,” Dr. Kuhn explains. “We subject ourselves to this because we believe in the best for our patients.”

If you want more information about any of the services provided by Facial Surgery Institute, please contact them at 402-330-8460. Their website (FSIomaha.com) provides additional details. Their office is located at 2727 South 144th Street, Suite 235, in Omaha.

Tied Up in Knots?

Treat Yourself to a Massage

If your muscles feel tight and tense after work, if you feel aches and pains after a session at the gym, or if you deal with chronic pain, getting a massage may help alleviate your symptoms. Massage therapy involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body. It has been practiced in most cultures throughout human history and was one of the earliest tools that people used to try to relieve pain.

Best performed by a licensed, board-certified massage therapist, massage therapy involves using different pressures, movements, and techniques to manipulate muscles and other soft tissues in the body. A massage has many benefits, including, but not limited to, muscle relaxation, stress relief, improving sleep quality, and easing chronic pain.

Different types of massage produce different results, so ask your therapist to help you choose the right type for you. Swedish massages utilize soft, broad strokes up and down the entire body, focusing on specific regions. The muscles are rubbed in the same direction that blood returns to the heart. Tapping motions on the top layer of muscles, combined with manipulated joint movement, are both relaxing and energizing. A Swedish massage also increases the blood’s oxygen level, improving circulation and relieving tension.

Hot stone massages help relax tight muscles by placing warm stones that have been heated in water on specific areas of the body, such as the back, stomach, and face. The stones warm and relax the muscles. The massage therapist is then able to utilize

deeper pressure on those areas without discomfort. A hot stone massage can decrease stress, increase flexibility, and decrease muscle spasms.

A deep tissue massage is an intense massage targeting muscle knots. The massage therapist applies warm oils and direct pressure to relax the top muscle layers, allowing for penetration to the deeper muscle tissues. This type of massage helps relieve chronic aches and pains. It’s also beneficial for sciatica pain and fibromyalgia. Deep tissue massage is often used in combination with other massage techniques.

Thai massage combines acupressure and yoga poses to relax the body. The client is actually involved in assisting a licensed massage therapist. The therapist guides the client through various stretches, manipulating the body into various positions. Benefits may include boosting energy, reducing stress, and stimulating circulation.

Expectant mothers can benefit from a prenatal massage. Benefits include lowering anxiety, decreasing leg and back pain, improving sleep, and reducing levels of the stress hormone

norepinephrine. Prenatal massages are typically performed after the first trimester, and avoid deep tissue massage due to an increase in the risk of blood clots during pregnancy. Look for a certified massage therapist who has training and experience in pregnancy massage (as well as that special table with a hole for your belly!). Your doctor or midwife may also have some recommendations.

There’s also shiatsu, a traditional Japanese technique where the therapist applies finger pressure to multiple areas, holding each one for several seconds. Stretching and joint rotation are also employed. This massage method is based on traditional Chinese acupuncture and can help ease headache pain, muscle pain, and stiffness, promoting overall well-being. It can also increase blood flow and improve mood.

Trigger point massage and reflexology target specific areas. Ever had a knot in your back or shoulders? A trigger point massage may help. A trigger point is a tight, tender area of muscle tissue that can cause a great deal of pain. Trigger point massage therapy targets the specific muscle tissue with pressure and deep breathing. One or multiple sessions may be needed.

Reflexology is a type of massage that applies pressure to reflex areas of the feet, relieving pain and stress while promoting relaxation and a good night’s sleep. It can be especially wonderful for someone who stands for long periods of time. It’s believed that the regions targeted by reflexology are connected to the nervous system and the brain, further promoting stress relief.

Sports massages are similar to deep-tissue massages, but they focus on muscles that take a beating while playing sports or doing other types of repetitive physical activity. It can speed recovery time and increase range of motion. It is tailored for individual needs and may include Swedish and trigger point massage techniques.

Couple’s massages are becoming increasingly popular. Couples receive side-by-side massages, along with optional extras like champagne, roses, and relaxing in a hot tub. A chair massage utilizes a specially designed chair for a great massage of the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and hands.

There’s no reason to be all tied up in knots. Your local spa, salon, or massage therapy studio can help you choose the best massage option for your needs.

High Performance Surfaces

Countertops that Meet the Challenge

There is no doubt that countertops are one of the most important features in a beautiful kitchen or bathroom. This single design element sets the stage for the visual and functional foundation in these hard-working rooms. When it comes time to select them, you want to make the right decision! Check out the pros and cons of the latest materials, colors, and patterns to help you make the best countertop choice.

According to top kitchen and bath designers, countertops can make or break the entire look of a space. There’s a reason that designers spend so much time scoping out beautiful and functional countertops. As the primary workspace in the kitchen, countertops provide the surface for food preparation, cooking, and even eating, not to mention a whole host of other daily activities, like homework, entertaining, and household tasks. These multipurpose surfaces are in constant use and are subjected to hot dishes, sharp utensils, and messy spills. Countertops are expected to stand up to these assaults and to look good while doing so!

One thing is for certain: countertops are expensive. They represent a major investment in your home. When honing in on the best surface for you and your family, it’s important to consider your style preferences, your home’s aesthetic, your lifestyle, and your budget.

For the last decade, quartz has been extremely popular among homeowners. This engineered stone is composed of

mainly natural quartz particles combined with resin and pigments. The manufacturing process allows for almost unlimited design and color options. From solid colors to simple patterns to intricate veining that mimics marble or granite, there are options for any design aesthetic from traditional to contemporary.

Quartz is extremely durable, non-porous, requires no sealing or regular maintenance, and will last a lifetime with minimal scratching or chipping. As its popularity has increased and buyers place a higher value on it, installing quartz adds resale value to a home. Quartz does need protection from extreme heat, as hot pans can leave a mark. All these positive features mean that quartz comes with a significant price tag.

Marble is a classic, elegant option for countertops. This timeless choice elevates the design aesthetic of any space. Marble is an expensive option that can stain, etch, and chip. If you opt for marble, it’s important to view the minor imperfections that may occur over time as simply adding character to your space! If you’re a die-hard perfectionist who is set on natural stone,

check out granite. With beauty and unique character, granite is extremely durable. Granite should be re-sealed every few years to maintain its resistance to heat and scratching.

Concrete is now considered by many as the ultimate countertop material. This statement-making element complements virtually any style, from traditional to industrial to contemporary. Concrete can be customized to incorporate integrated sinks, drain boards, or cutting boards and can be colored or acid-stained any shade imaginable. The porous surface does require sealing to avoid staining and etching.

Another option for those who want a clean, modern look in their home is solid surface countertops. Made from acrylic or polyester resins and known for their seamless appearance, solid surface countertops are easy to clean and maintain. They are, however, vulnerable to chipping and are not as heat-resistant as other countertop materials.

In terms of color trends, the preference for the white and gray countertops that have been on top over the past decade is now shifting to warmer tones of tan, brown, and beige. Other leading trends are the emergence of the full-wall backsplash. Homeowners are installing the backsplash all the way to the ceiling (or to the upper cabinets or range hood) and investing in high-quality products and finishes. For example, homeowners may choose quartz for perimeter countertops and opt for highend marble or quartzite for a dramatic effect on the kitchen island. In recent years, the kitchen island has become the crown jewel of the kitchen, featuring waterfall islands (where the countertop surface flows from the top of the island to the floor) that create a stunning focal point.

If you’re in the market for new countertops, begin by meeting with a kitchen specialist or interior designer to discuss countertop materials, colors, and designs. Choosing the professionals to fabricate and install your new countertops will be the single most important decision you’ll make in the process. Ensure the quality you deserve by asking the right questions. For example, do fabricators do all the work or do they hire subcontractors? If the latter, how do they ensure proper training? Ask for references and only hire a licensed and insured installer to handle this hard-working surface in your kitchen or bath.

Struggling to Conceive?

You’re Not Alone!

Most people don’t imagine they’ll have any trouble conceiving, and it can be a very frustrating experience when it doesn’t happen quickly. Many couples unable to conceive may feel very alone, but infertility is actually quite common. Medical advancements to help couples overcome infertility are in constant development.

Not conceiving within the first few months of trying is no cause for concern. Infertility is when a woman does not become pregnant after having unprotected intercourse for a full year. If a woman is older than 35, the length of time narrows to six months.

Out of 100 couples, 12 or 13 will have difficulty conceiving. According to the CDC, 6.1 million American women between the ages of 15–44 will have difficulty becoming pregnant or staying pregnant. That’s about 10 percent.

About one third of fertility problems are associated with women, another third are issues with men, and the final third is a combination of both male and female problems (or the problem just cannot be identified).

Ovulation is the most common culprit for women, followed by blocked fallopian tubes. Other reasons include the shape of the uterus or uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors that develop in the walls of the uterus.

Being older than 30, smoking, drinking heavily, poor diet, having diabetes, being under stress, or engaging in too much athletic training can decrease a woman’s chance of pregnancy. Being extremely underweight or overweight, having a history of sexually transmitted

disease, having endometriosis or thyroid problems, or having gone through radiation or chemotherapy can also decrease a woman’s chances of getting pregnant.

Male infertility is when, over a one-year period, a man cannot cause a pregnancy after having intercourse without birth control with a female who is able to get pregnant. Common causes of male infertility include erectile dysfunction and varicocele, which can damage sperm production.

As with women, a man’s fertility decreases with age. Smoking, diabetes, heavy alcohol use, or a syndrome that affects sperm production are also factors. Having the mumps can cause male infertility, as can radiation or chemotherapy treatment. Steroid use can also be the cause.

Finding the causes of infertility starts with a physical exam and a careful medical history. For men, a semen analysis evaluates sperm count, activity, and shape.

For women, tests include a pelvic exam and blood tests to check hormone levels and ovulation. The fallopian tubes are examined. An x-ray hysterosalpingogram (HSG) uses dye so doctors can see how readily the dye moves through the fallopian tubes. Some women will

need a laparoscopy with a small camera to get a closer look. When the uterus needs to be viewed, doctors use transvaginal ultrasound or hysteroscopy (camera inserted into the uterus).

The most common remedies include medication or surgery. For women, fertility drugs are the main form of treatment. These work like normal hormones to increase ovulation and can be taken orally or by injection. The success rates for these medications vary but generally help increase fertility by 25–50 percent. Some women may benefit from surgery to correct a problem blocking conception.

Other options include in vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg freezing. IVF is the most successful infertility treatment. With IVF, mature eggs are collected from ovaries, fertilized in a lab, and then transferred to the uterus.

Natural Procreative Technology (NaPro) uses natural methods and restorative surgery. This treatment requires a woman to track and monitor her fertility and avoids the use of artificial hormones or devices. It is less expensive than IVF and is highly successful in helping couples achieve a healthy pregnancy.

Holistic alternatives to medication can include various herbs or supplements. Whether or not someone undergoes medical treatment, lifestyle changes like a healthy diet, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, increasing exercise, and decreasing stress can all improve the chances of conception.

Infertility treatment is stressful. The partner with the infertility issues may feel guilty; the partner getting the treatment can feel overwhelmed. The cost of treatment can cause financial strain. Probably the biggest stressor is that treatments may not work. Couples may need counseling to keep the lines of communication open.

Like any other medical procedure, it is important to ask plenty of questions of any potential provider. Reproductive endocrinologists specialize in fertility and are trained in treatments like IVF and egg freezing. The CDC offers a federal database about success rates of fertility treatments.

Overcoming infertility can take months, require fertility medications or surgery, and be financially costly. However, for many, the benefits outweigh the negatives. The days of someone just accepting that they are unable to conceive are over! Infertility treatment may lead them to the family they dream of having.

Interiors Joan and Associates

60 Years Creating Beautiful Spaces

Are you in the market for a new home or business space? Thinking about a remodeling project or just freshening up a room? How well your spaces are designed and furnished impacts their aesthetics, functionality, and enjoyment. The staff at Interiors Joan and Associates would love the opportunity to help you bring your design vision to life.

Interiors Joan and Associates offers residential and commercial interior design, custom furnishings, custom window treatments, extensive fabric collections, unique artwork and accessories, designer wall coverings, and floor coverings. The firm also provides new construction and renovation consultations.

The company was founded by Joan Sorensen in 1963. Initially, Joan studied interior design because she wanted a beautiful home. She loved the field, and her business was born in Fremont, Nebraska. When asked about the firm’s longevity and success, Joan replies, “It’s simple. You just do it better than anyone else.”

In 1985, Joan opened a location in Omaha, on West Center Road. Eventually, Joan’s daughter, Diane Gernstein, and busi -

ness partner, Nancy Pesavento, purchased the firm they relocated the business to West Dodge Road and opened another location in Lincoln. In 2020, Joan’s granddaughter, Kris Patton, purchased the business, resulting in three generations of family ownership.

Kris grew up in Fremont. When she was younger, she helped her grandmother and mother at the firm, unboxing items, pricing, and bookkeeping. She liked the design environment and learned all aspects of the business. After high school, she

went into the design field herself, earning a bachelor’s degree in architecture with an emphasis in design from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln. Purchasing the business in 2020 was the logical next step. The firm currently has locations in both Omaha and Lincoln.

The firm has 14 designers between the two locations, some of whom have been with the firm for over 30 years. All the designers are allied and certified by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). “Our designers are talented and hardworking,” Kris asserts. “They really care about their work.” Each designer is familiar with styles and trends and has a lot to offer clients. “They have in-depth product knowledge and understand how furniture will be used to ensure it will work for their client. We design for our clients. We listen to their ideas, their vision, and what drives them.”

At Interiors Joan and Associates, clients can get help on large or small projects from the ground up. A design team can assist with floor plans to ensure they work for the client’s needs. Designers work with builders and remodelers and are familiar with building codes and technicalities. Whether a client wants artwork, furniture, or accessories, or help with a new build or remodeling project, the team is ready to meet their needs.

Designers attend interior design markets twice a year. “We hand-select our accessories, artwork, and furniture,” Kris says. “We are in tune with what we are selling—we’ve seen it, we’ve sat in it.”The firm’s large showroom features many beautiful items that clients may purchase off the floor. The showroom is open to the public, not just to their design clients. “Customers do not need to work with a designer,” Kris shares, though many

of them choose to do so. “People may think interior design firms are expensive, but we have multiple price points.”

Customer service is a top priority. “Everyone comes here for a reason. Our job is to figure out their needs, facilitate the project, and help them get their desired result,” Kris states. She emphasizes the importance of communication, time management, and collaboration. “We are all creatures of habit, and we gravitate toward things with which we are comfortable. Our job is to provide clients with options they had not considered. Our designers provide different viewpoints, which allows us to achieve the perfect design for our clients.”

Current trends that are seen include warmer colors, warmer tones, softer lines, and mixed styles, resulting in unique and special spaces. They want to show clients things that are special based on their own lives, not what they can get and see everywhere else.

The designers at Interior Joan & Associates find it rewarding to create beautiful spaces for clients, and they love how installation day brings everything together. “It’s great to see a client’s happy response to their new space and environment and know that you played a part,” she concludes. “Your personal space and surroundings should make you feel good.”

Interiors Joan and Associates is located at 13130 West Dodge Road in Omaha and at 4131 Pioneer Wood Drive in Lincoln. Venus Vein Clinic Offering Health and Hope

I used to think that varicose veins were something that should be treated just for cosmetic reasons—after all, there’s no denying that they don’t look great. My naive self always thought that unsightly leg veins were only a problem if you wanted your legs to look better. As it turns out, that is not the case. Yes, we all want great-looking legs, but it’s even more important to have healthy legs. Varicose veins are an indication that your blood is not flowing as well as it should.

Healthy leg veins have valves that keep blood flowing to the heart. Vein disease develops when the valves stop working properly, causing blood to flow backwards and pool in the lower leg veins. When left untreated, venous disease can progress into serious conditions that can affect the quality of your life. Luckily for us all in the Omaha area, there is a doctor who can significantly improve the quality of life for people with varicose veins. That doctor is Kelly Schroeder.

Dr. Schroeder has treated vein and lymphatic disorders for years. This enthusiastic doctor is passionate about what she does. She wants her patients to live active and fulfilled lives, and her procedures can provide just that for people who have been suffering from the various ramifications of venous disease.

Three decades ago, Dr. Schroeder says, the most common procedure for treating varicose veins was surgical stripping.

Make A Wish.indd 1 2/9/22 4:10 PM
40 July 2023 Healthy Living
Dr. Kelly Schroeder, M.D.

This invasive procedure was painful, required a lengthy recovery time, and was likely to leave scars. Vein treatments have come a long way since then—today’s treatments are relatively painless and require no downtime. These treatments are available at Venus Vein Clinic.

When she started Venus Vein Clinic, Dr. Schroeder wanted to address the misconceptions that surround circulation and blood flow in the legs. “People are unaware of how venous disease can affect different aspects of their lives,” she shares. “Restless leg syndrome (RLS) can cause pain and discomfort. Additionally, it has an effect on your emotional and mental health if you end up avoiding activities that you previously loved to do because of discomfort, pain, or restlessness. We have minimally invasive procedures that can relieve discomfort and give patients back their active lives.”

“It is troubling when I see patients who have stopped doing things that they love because of the pain and swelling,” Dr. Schroeder continues. “Good health comes from being active, and suffering with venous disease does not inspire people to be active and healthy.” It’s hard to stay active when you’re dealing with symptoms like swelling, aching, heaviness, and even itching around the veins. “We have the treatments to give them that freedom once again.” If you are not exercising because veins are making it painful to do so, you are in jeopardy of gaining weight, which is likely to make your health circumstances even worse.

If you think of your veins as a natural highway in your body, you realize that the flow of blood is necessary to keep all your veins clean and working properly. When you have a

clog, the blood does not flow properly and causes issues, much like a clogged highway. The treatments that Dr. Schroeder offers can clear that highway out again and get you moving. Of course, treatment will also make your legs look better, and Dr. Schroeder is certainly happy to treat varicose veins that are bothering people for cosmetic reasons. (Many insurance providers cover vein treatments for medical reasons but not for cosmetic reasons, so be sure to check with your provider before scheduling your procedure.)

Another point that Dr. Schroeder is quick to point out is that varicose veins get worse over time, not better—they simply do not go away on their own. So, if you are suffering from varicose veins, the time is now to improve your suffering and improve your way of life.

Dr. Schroeder worked in emergency rooms before starting her own practice, and she saw infections and leg ulcers in patients who had not taken proper care of their vein issues. She was determined to start a medical practice where she could educate and help people before they got to the worst stages of venous disease. Her passion for health is contagious, and she is invested 100 percent in helping her patients get healthier and stronger.

If you are suffering from the symptoms of venous disease, you need not suffer any longer! Reach out to Venus Vein Clinic to learn more about how these virtually pain-free treatments can improve your quality of life. You can learn more by calling 402-979-VEIN(8346) or visiting venusveinclinic.com. Venus Vein Clinic is located at 9202 West Dodge Road, Suite 303, in Omaha.

Pet Grooming Tips for

Dogs and Cats

True joy is showing kindness to animals! To keep our pets happy, it’s important that we know how to take care of our furry friends. Part of showing true kindness to your dog or cat is finding the right groomer. Read on to learn how proper professional pet grooming is a direct way to a happy, healthy pet.

As Peanuts creator Charles Schulz said, “Happiness is a warm puppy.” Many dog owners might expand that idea into, “a warm, clean puppy.” That’s where a professional groomer comes in! Though dogs still need interim grooming at home, using a professional groomer has many benefits.

It’s worth the money and time to have your dog professionally groomed. Pros know what is best for particular breeds. They know the different cuts and can show you how to get your pet comfortable with both professional and home grooming. Regular grooming fosters good behavior and keeps coats shiny and healthy. A professional groomer will have all the right grooming tools and non-toxic shampoo.

Professional grooming is not just about maintaining your dog’s coat. A groomer is trained to examine your pet for any potential problems that need attention, such as issues with nails, teeth, ears, and the bottoms of feet. If you visit the same groomer regularly, they will likely be able to detect such health issues early. They also apply flea and tick protection.

The frequency of grooming needed depends on the dog. Most puppies do not need grooming, as their mom will do that. However, special breeds need grooming right away. Puppies that do need professional grooming include standard poodles, Labradoodles, and golden doodles. Dogs (of any age) with double coats need to be brushed every day. Those include Siberian huskies, Pomeranians, and Pekingese.

Dogs with very short hair need less grooming, though they should still visit the groomer every six weeks or so to check on ears, health of coat, and other key areas. Short-haired dogs include dachshunds, Boston terriers, beagles, French bulldogs, and pugs. Use treats and praise when brushing to teach your dog to look forward to grooming, and be sure to brush them regularly at home.

There are many factors to consider to find the right groomer. It will likely be convenient to visit a groomer who lives close to your home, so check with neighborhood dog owners and find out where they have had good experiences. Some groomers will come to your home so your dog doesn’t need to be caged. If your dog needs a gentle approach and quiet environment, that might be a good option. Mobile groomers are also very convenient for dog owners who are short on time or have difficulty getting their dog (or dogs) into the car.

Cats and kittens are something of a different story when it comes to grooming. Cats spend much of their day grooming themselves, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need any grooming attention from you! Many long-haired cats need brushing every day with a wide-toothed metal comb. A weekly trip to the cat groomer will keep their coats even more healthy. Short-haired cats do a good job of grooming themselves, but frequent brushing from you is still important.

A vital reason for grooming is that it is part of a cat’s social experience. You want to give your cat lots of love, and regular brushing will help accomplish this. Comb all over your cat, including behind the ears (your feline friend will love this!). When brushing your cat, always use praise so your cat develops positive feelings about grooming. Your cat may come to love brushing so much that they approach you when it’s time!

When it comes to professional grooming for cats, many of the same advantages apply as for dogs. Regular visits to the same groomer can provide flea and tick protection and early recognition of health issues that are visible on the outside of the body. Appropriate shampoos will also keep your cat’s coat healthy.

Don’t forget the haircuts! Novelty cuts are popular, including lion cuts, teddy bear cuts, dragon cuts—even mohawks. These cuts are, of course, adorable, but they also help long-haired cats keep cool in the summer and maintain coat health for cats who have difficulty self-grooming. Cat grooming can also include nail trims, ear cleaning, soft paw application, and even exfoliating scrubs. If you have something in mind, be sure to ask your groomer!

Being a responsible pet owner is knowing how and when to take care of your pets. Regular grooming, both at home and by a professional groomer, is an important part of loving pet ownership. Ask your pet-owning family and friends for a recommendation!

Massive, Not Passive The Index Fund Train Gathers Steam

An index fund is a mutual fund designed to replicate the performance of a specific market index. The first index fund available to the investing public was launched in 1974. This initial fund was a plain vanilla, no-nonsense clone of the S&P 500. Jack Bogle, the mastermind behind the fund, envisioned that investors would buy shares of the fund and hold them, untouched, for decades. Investors’ response to the initial offering was underwhelming…so underwhelming, in fact, that its manufacturer, Vanguard Funds, contemplated shutting it down at the end of its very first year.

As Wall Street and their marketing departments watched, the number of dollars that investors held in their self-directed retirement accounts exploded. Sensing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they put their marketing heads together to develop products that would attract those dollars and create an expanding source of revenue.

The first step past the original simple S&P 500 fund was to slice and dice the existing indexes into new indexes and funds. Examples of these innovations include funds that separated the S&P 500 into growth stocks, value stocks, or high-dividend stocks. Slicing and dicing of the Dow Jones Industrial and Nasdaq indexes quickly followed. Then came shadow index funds, which contained companies only from a specific industrial sector, such as consumer durables, pharmaceutical companies, or energy companies.

Today, there are over 5,000 market indexes and over 8,300 index funds. These funds are owned by 90 million investors with a total value of $15 trillion. Of this total, $7 trillion are in funds that mimic the S&P 500. Vanguard’s S&P 500 fund has assets approaching $1 trillion, a far cry from its inauspicious start. An additional $3 trillion are in funds that mimic the two other major indexes, the Dow and Nasdaq.

Investors need to be aware that these newly minted indexes deviate from the intent of the original index funds. That intent was to accept that Mr. Market is smarter than humans and that we humans should simply take the market as given. These new funds put humans back into the investment equation of Wall Street’s unending quest to beat the market (or at least claim to do so).

An ongoing criticism of index funds is that there is the possibility that they will reduce the number of shares available to trade, thus distorting prices. While there may be some validity to this charge, current market results do not support the claim. Most of these assets are in retirement accounts, and new dollars are added each year. As the population continues to age, more and more people are retiring and drawing down their accounts. Thus, trading of the funds does occur. Index funds have also become a tool of professional money managers, most notably hedge fund managers. They are attractive because, in an exchange-traded fund (ETF) format, index funds themselves are bought and sold the same way stocks are bought and sold, allowing fund managers to pursue their market-timing ventures.

A recent article in Barron’s magazine described a growing trend among traditional Wall Street brokers to use index funds when building client portfolios. Ten years ago, the use of index funds by a Wall Street broker would have been an impeachable offense. These days, active trading of index funds does occur in these accounts. The practice is so common that, on an average market day, index funds appear on the Wall Street Journal’s list of the most actively traded stocks. This list includes those newly minted index funds as well as the traditional ones that follow the S&P and Dow.

Many investors are not even aware that they own index funds. These are found in accounts managed by Wall Street brokers and certified financial planners (CFPs) who utilize robo accounts in their practice. A robo account is a computer-generated collection of funds. Once the portfolio mix is established, computers rebalance the percentages in response to shifts in the market. When investors review their statements, they see the funds listed, but the names of the funds do not identify them as actively managed funds or index funds.

Indications are strong that index funds will continue to grow in popularity and variety. Their inclusion in the investment products available to individual investors mimics the rise of the actively managed mutual funds that occurred 30 to 40 years ago. It is important for investors to be aware of the growing popularity of index funds and have a basic knowledge of the different types of indexes they mimic. This insight will help them communicate more effectively with their broker or CFP.

Microplastics A Growing Threat

Most people know that plastic pollution is a major environmental concern, but they may not know that an even larger danger is present in the form of microplastics. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles—less than five millimeters in size. They can come from a variety of sources, such as broken-down plastic products, microbeads from personal care products, and microfibers from clothing. They are so small that they can quickly enter our waterways and oceans, the food chain, and even the air we breathe, posing a significant threat to our environment and our health. Due to their microscopic size, they generally go undetected and are much harder to clean up than larger plastics that end up in waterways and in the environment.

The problem of microplastics is a growing concern. It is estimated that up to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans every year, and up to 236,000 metric tons of microplastics are floating in our oceans. These tiny particles can have a devastating effect on marine life, as they can be mistaken for food and be ingested by marine creatures. This causes harm to animals’ digestive systems and can even lead to starvation in some cases. They can also accumulate in the food chain, eventually reaching humans who consume seafood.

The problem is much wider than marine environments. Microplastics have also been found in tap water, bottled water, crops, and even in the air. Ingesting microplastics can have negative health effects, such as inflammation, damage to organs, and cancer.

Microplastics in the environment also have negative effects on plants. As the microplastics work their way from the water systems into the soil, plants can absorb them through their roots as they take in water. This can cause the roots of trees or other plants to become clogged with plastics, which prevents them from getting sufficient water and nutrients. Eventually, this can lead to the death of a plant or even entire sections of forest.

Microplastics can come from a variety of sources. One of the most common sources is broken-down plastic products, such as plastic bags, packaging, and bottles. When plastic products are exposed to sunlight, water, and wind, they can break down into smaller and smaller pieces until they become microplastics.

Microplastics are also common in personal care products

Women’s Edition has been a great tool for our business. With their guidance on graphics and wording, we are getting calls and emails from great fitting customers, so the message is clear in regard to the problem we solve. We have been able to reach new customers on an individual basis. We are so happy to have formed this relationship. It helps us help our customers transition into senior living with a lot less stress!

that contain microbeads. These tiny plastic beads are used in exfoliating scrubs, toothpaste, and other personal care products. When these products are used and then rinsed down the drain, the microbeads can enter our waterways and oceans.

Microfibers from clothing and other fabrics are also a significant source of microplastics. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and nylon, shed microfibers every time they are washed. These microfibers can end up in waterways, where they can be ingested by marine creatures and make their way into the food chain.

There are several solutions to the problem of microplastic pollution, but they will require a collective effort from governments, businesses, and individuals. One solution is to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is produced in the first place. Governments can implement policies that limit the production and use of single-use plastics, such as plastic bags and straws. Businesses can also take steps to reduce their use of plastic, such as using reusable packaging and switching to biodegradable materials. Individuals can make a difference by reducing their use of plastic and by properly disposing of plastic waste. This can be done by using reusable bags, water bottles, and containers, and by properly recycling plastic products.

Another solution is to improve waste management systems. Governments and businesses can invest in waste management infrastructure, such as recycling facilities and waste-to-energy plants, to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is sent to landfills or ends up in the environment. In addition to reducing the amount of plastic waste that is produced, there are also technologies being developed to remove existing microplastics from the environment. One such technology is the use of microplastic-catching devices, which are installed in waterways and oceans to capture microplastics before they can cause harm to marine life and enter the food chain.

Microplastics are a growing threat to our environment and our health. They can come from a variety of sources, including broken-down plastic products, personal care products, and synthetic fabrics. Ingesting microplastics can have negative health effects, such as inflammation and damage to internal organs. To combat this growing issue, it is going to take a combination of government intervention, individual accountability, and an increase in awareness about microplastics and the dangers posed by them to both humans and the environment.

Protecting Assets and Loved Ones

Do You Need a Trust?

When we hear of someone drawing from a “trust fund,” we might assume that the person is very wealthy—after all, who else would have a trust? You may be surprised by how much a trust could benefit you and your family. It can help survivors avoid the public probate that occurs with a will. A trust can get assets to survivors more quickly, and assets may be sheltered from estate and transfer taxes.

In simple terms, a trust is a legal agreement in which a trustee is named to manage certain assets of yours according to your wishes. A trust can be revocable (easy to adjust) or irrevocable (quite difficult to amend). A trust can spell out how you want your assets to be handled after your death, or it can be structured so that it takes effect while you are still living. (In the latter case, the trustee manages your assets if you become incapacitated.)

Establishing a trust is an important part of estate planning. It is wise to work with an attorney to obtain all the advantages of this type of legal agreement. Know what your assets are, including property, business interests, investments, life insurance, liquid assets, and so on. Consider how you want those assets distributed.

One of the most common types of trust is the revocable trust, also referred to as a living trust. In many cases, it is funded (that is, your assets are transferred to it) only after your death, and it will contain your wishes for how those assets are

to be distributed. If you leave minor children, the agreement may direct the trustee to designate who will make financial decisions on behalf of those children and to provide funds for such things as education until each child reaches the age of majority. Five years is a recommended frequency for re-evaluating an estate plan (sooner, if circumstances change significantly).

Revocable or living trusts are easy to amend. As children mature, directives may be revisited in view of changing circumstances. However, in contemplating a revocable trust, one must consider that some advantages, such as tax reduction, may not apply.

With an irrevocable trust, ownership of certain assets is transferred to the trust, which is then managed by the trustee. Reasons to establish one might include to reduce estate taxes, to protect assets from creditors, or to qualify for government assistance. An irrevocable trust is very hard to change once put in place.

Who will you designate as the trustee? This person will make vital decisions about the assets placed in the trust. However, they do not have free rein. It is a fiduciary relationship. The trustee is required to act in the best interests of you and your beneficiaries, to use reasonable care, and to avoid showing preference to a beneficiary. They must observe the terms of the trust and avoid dealings that benefit themselves.

If a family member or friend cannot perform with impartiality, does not have sufficient understanding of the trustee’s role, or cannot commit the time that is required, you might consider a trusted attorney or other experienced professional. Some banks or trust companies (Corporate Trustees) offer fiduciary services. Co-trustees might be considered. In addition to a trustee, a successor trustee should also be named.

When you’re establishing a trust with the help of an attorney, advice from your financial advisor or accountant may be useful, as well. Be sure that documents are properly signed and notarized (if required). Don’t forget to let your loved ones know about the trust!

Special instructions may be included, such as naming a person to assume guardianship of any minor children or an incapacitated adult in your care. Guardians take care of the daily needs of life, while conservators manage financial or other assets. A trust may eliminate the need for naming a conservator for minors or even for yourself in case of incapacity.

An asset protection trust shields your assets from current or future creditors. In effect, the trust holds your assets. With assets no longer in your name, they cannot be seized to satisfy a court judgment against you.

If a beneficiary receives state or federal benefits, and qualifies as having special needs, a trust can be established that will not exclude them from receiving such benefits. The attorney can set up a special needs trust and determine whether the beneficiary qualifies.

At what season of life should one do estate planning? Just about every adult needs at least a simple will, health directives, and power of attorney. As you acquire assets and special circumstances come into play, you and your loved ones may benefit greatly from a trust.

The First Day of Your Life

Every Day is New!

“This is a wonderful day. I have never seen this one before.”

What a beautiful quote. I had to stop and read it again, and then again. I took a few deep breaths, slowed down, and began to remember all that I have to be appreciative for in my life.

“If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you will never have enough.” — Oprah

Have you ever gone down a rabbit hole of negativity that is so deep you didn’t even realize that you were stuck down there? Do you find yourself grumpy, critical, judgmental, and generally very unhappy? Do your mornings start out with the huge to-do list that makes it just about impossible for you to crawl out of bed? Do you find yourself forgetting every blessing that this life has given you? What can we do?

“It’s a funny thing about life—once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.” — Germany Kent

Making a decision to take time to practice gratitude is the surest way to get yourself out of that hole. Beginning and

ending your day with gratitude is guaranteed to change your life very quickly. Choosing to put your attention to a grateful heart will change your life.

“The heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for we cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time.”

It is such a simple, powerful process. All it takes is the decision to go there. Take out a pen and paper, your laptop, your phone…whatever works best for you. Start writing down everything in your life that you are grateful for. Your health, your family, your job, your friends. Too much? Start smaller! Your coffee in the morning. The driver who let you into traffic last night on your commute home. A song on the radio that brought back a great memory from your younger years.

“Be in love with your life. Every detail of it.” — Jack Kerouac

All of us, at different times in our lives, go down the negativity path. We can blame it on our family, job, health, politics. The great news is that we can change it…almost instantly. Just do it!

Kids Are People, Too They Have Rights

A friend recently told me about an article she’d read regarding children’s rights. She was curious about a declaration reportedly made in the 1920s, so she looked it up, shared a copy of her findings with me, and asked what I thought.

I found this Declaration of Rights of the Child interesting. To paraphrase (the copy she gave me was five pages long): “A child must…have the opportunity for normal development, both materially and spiritually; …be fed when hungry and nursed when sick; …be helped if backward, reclaimed when delinquent, and sheltered if orphaned. A child must be first to receive relief in times of distress; …be able to earn a livelihood and be protected against exploitation; …be made aware of the responsibility to be of service to its fellow men.”

According to the copy my friend gave me, it was endorsed by the League of Nations Geneva Assembly as the World Child Welfare Charter . Of course, I’ve heard of the League of Nations, but I don’t recall hearing about a Geneva Assembly addressing global children’s rights. It seems to me this should have come up somewhere in all the hours of education classes I’ve taken.

I searched further online and found the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which took place in the late 1980s and produced a similar document of “protocols” that bound, through international law, all the ratifying states (countries) to act in “the best interests of the child.”The UN General

Assembly adopted the Convention in the early 1990s. Again, I’ll paraphrase (this one has 68 pages): “every child has basic rights…to life, their own name and identity, and to be raised within a family or cultural grouping; …to express their opinions and have them heard and acted upon appropriately; … to be protected from abuse or exploitation; …have their privacy protected; …their lives not be subject to excessive interference.” It goes on to discuss limits to “corporal, cruel, or degrading forms of punishment…and protection from physical or mental violence.”

John Rosemond is the author of the recent article, in which he terms these rights “head scratchers.” He adds his own to the list: “…to hear the word ‘no’ often; …to be taught the skills necessary to make themselves happy; …to scream in complaint about parental decisions (as long as it’s confined to a designated ‘screaming area’); …to learn that their parents are NOT their friends; ...to do chores as a productive member of the family; … to learn obedience; …to be grateful for what they receive; …to understand parents are the legitimate authority in the family.”

Well, of course there should be a Bill of Rights for Children. These are the same rights…and implied responsibilities…we would expect for all people: respect of and for individuals and property, acceptance of responsibility for actions, service to others, and freedom to have an opinion. Kids are people, too!

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:

“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!
The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!”

Buying a Used Vehicle

It Can Be a Beautiful Thing!

You probably already know this, but buying a used vehicle can save you some big bucks! On average, a used car is at least 40 to 50 percent lower in price than a comparable new car. Consumers switch cars an average of every six years after purchase, so it’s worth taking a closer look at the advantages of buying a used vehicle.

The first way that a used vehicle saves you money is on depreciation. New cars lose value very quickly—even faster than they lose that new-car smell. A new vehicle can drop 11 percent of its value as you drive it home for the first time. However, when you buy a used vehicle, the bulk of that depreciation has already taken place. In some cases, a used vehicle may even gain value.

When car shopping, a deal on a new car may look good, but many new vehicles have hidden fees. Those hidden fees can include shipping charges, destination fees, and that old standby: “dealer preparation.” They even hide advertising charges in the cost. A used vehicle, on the other hand, generally has very few hidden fees—or none at all.

Now, for a little terminology lesson. “Pre-owned” is just another way of saying “used.” The term “pre-owned” doesn’t indicate anything in particular about a vehicle except that someone has already owned it. “Certified pre-owned,” on the other hand, means something specific. It means that the car has been inspected, refurbished, and certified by the manufacturer to assure that the vehicle is of high quality. Many times, that may include extended warranties and special financing.

Speaking of warranties, some used cars still retain some of their original warranty, and some carry the option of creating a new warranty. Of course, you need to verify what a warranty covers. Does it provide factory-trained technicians to repair your car with top quality parts and speedy service? How long is coverage available, is the warranty transferable, and what other benefits does it provide? A bumper-to-bumper warranty includes hundreds of covered repairs with only a small list of exclusions. A stated component coverage lists exactly what is covered.

It should also be noted that your registration fees will be cheaper with a used vehicle. The rate of annual registration is based on your car’s value and its model year. Generally speaking, the rate is higher in the first three years of the life of a vehicle, and it goes down from there (unless you’re purchasing a classic car).

When considering a used vehicle, there are certain questions that shouldn’t be overlooked. Some are obvious,

like how old is the car, what is the car worth, and what is the current mileage? Has the car been damaged or had mechanical problems? Is a vehicle history report available? Is there a safety rating on the vehicle? What other fees are included in the sale price? Don’t forget to take it for a test drive.

If the car is not pre-certified, then, without any question, you should have a third party inspect the vehicle. If it is a pre-certified vehicle, having a third-party inspection is not a necessity. Generally speaking, pre-owned vehicles are filtered between good and bad during the certification process, so having a third party check it out may not be necessary. That said, you should do what makes you comfortable. If you want your own mechanic to take a look before you buy, feel free to do so.

Financing a used vehicle is possible, but experts recommend that you pay in full when you buy the car. If you choose to finance, the bank will want to know how many miles the car has. Often, 100,000 miles is considered a cut-off point for lenders. Of course, a good credit score increases your chances of financing.

Some people subscribe to the 20/4/10 rule to calculate how much they can afford to borrow. A loan is affordable if you have enough cash to afford a 20 percent down payment, can pay the loan back within four years, and will spend less than 10 percent of your monthly take-home pay on vehicle-related expenses.

You also need to check a car’s true worth by checking its book value. This is the figure that you find in pricing guides and used-car pricing websites. These will list a vehicle’s base retail value. If you are purchasing a used vehicle from a private seller, get a vehicle history report. It can cost anywhere from 10 to 40 dollars, but it is well worth it. It will include accident history, recall history, title and lien history, and service history. It can help you avoid a lemon!

Flaxbeard Insurance Advisors Wading Through the Weeds

I don’t know about you, but when someone tries to talk to me about Medicare coverage, my eyes kind of glaze over and start to roll back in my head. It seems too convoluted and complicated for my brain to handle. (Since it is a government program, it may, in fact, sound more complicated than it really is…or be more complicated than it needs to be, but I cannot say for sure.) There are reasons for this confusing and somewhat conflicting coverage, but let’s be honest—it is really hard to understand! Even after a senior goes so far as to select a plan, they often struggle to understand the features.

If this sounds like your experience with Medicare plans, you are not alone. In this Age of Too Much Information, what is the best source to get information on Medicare plans and figure out which plan makes the most sense for you? After speaking with Chris Flaxbeard of Flaxbeard Insurance Advisors, I am happy to share with you that Chris is a reliable and knowledgeable expert in this area.

Chris comes from a nursing background, where she had the opportunity to witness health care and health coverage from different angles. She saw how people struggled with coverage and questions, and she has made it her life’s work to educate and inform people and to give them the best choices and options. For five years now, she has been advising and educating people on the ins and outs of Medicare.

need to be fully informed in order to choose the right plan. The best thing of all? There is no charge to you for this service. She is prepared to give you honest information and facts because she is not trying to sell you a particular type of insurance coverage. What a concept!

The key to understanding Medicare is education.

“The key to understanding Medicare is education,” she says. “Understanding and comprehending coverages is my goal! I simplify and make all aspects of it easier to understand and navigate.” Chris believes so strongly in the importance of Medicare education that she even teaches classes in it. I would say without hesitation that she is an expert in the field, and she is passionate about getting the word out to people who feel overwhelmed by the details of Medicare.

A word of explanation for readers not seasoned in the insurance industry: Chris is a full-service, independent insurance advisor. This means that she does not work for any one insurance company and is not trying to steer you in any particular direction. Instead, she can give you helpful comparisons of different companies that participate in Medicare and show you what their various coverage could look like for your specific needs.

When you sit down with Chris to discuss your Medicare options, she goes over your medical concerns, medications, and lifestyle. With this information, she can guide you on what would be the best coverage for you. She knows that her clients

“People don’t know what they don’t know about Medicare,” Chris points out. “It is my job to make sure that they are clearly educated and informed about the plans available to them and which could benefit them the most.” Chris cautions people against calling those 1-800 numbers that are so prevalent on television commercials during the Medicare open enrollment period. These commercials are not necessarily your friend when it comes to choosing coverages. We have all heard terms like Part A, Part B, Part D, Advantage, donut hole—but we don’t really know what most of it means. In some cases, people may try to take advantage of confused consumers and guide them toward buying something that might not be the best choice.

Fortunately for us, Chris is an expert and is only interested in providing her clients with clear, concise information. “My biggest reward is enabling my clients to make informed decisions and seeing that they are comfortable with their choices,” Chris concludes. She recommends that we review our Medicare coverage once a year to make sure that the coverage we selected is still the best plan for our individual needs. By now, I’m sure you know who to call to help you with your annual coverage review!

Having an honest, local insurance advisor who will give you the facts about Medicare will save you time, money, and stress. Chris Flaxbeard works with dozens of insurance companies and has clients all across the state. She can offer the best and most appropriate coverage that there is. I love her passion for educating! Beyond the Vine Transform Your Home

Rose McCormick’s clients say she has a natural flair and an eye for what works in a home. Combine that with a personal touch and the lack of a hard sell, and customers rave about the services Rose offers at her shop, Beyond the Vine Flowers and Home Décor. This savvy businesswoman, who has showcased her talents and creativity for more than 37 years, continues to provide her unique one-of-a kind services to clients who want to love their living spaces.

Of course, Beyond the Vine offers a floral shop. In addition, it has a 4,000-square-foot retail space that features affordable furniture, wall art, candles, lamps, home accessories, and much more. At gobeyondthevine.com, you can find products and ship them all over the world.

Rose fell in love with flowers and visual presentation at an early age. Her first job was at age 15, and she was hooked on the floral business. The industry has gone through many changes in the past few decades, Rose notes. She points to a recent resurgence in the popularity of silk flowers and plants. “Silk flowers have

come a long way,” Rose shares. “Ours are not like the ones you might see in discount stores. They are botanically correct and even feel real to the touch. Colors are the hues found in nature. They offer warmth to a space without the need for weekly watering.”

Some of Rose’s clients are snowbirds, are extremely busy with jobs, or travel a great deal. For people who aren’t at home to water their plants, silk trees and plants

are a great substitute. “We also install corporate plants in offices, hotels, country clubs, and businesses,” Rose says, including Champions Run Country Club and the Omaha Hilton Hotel. “These realistic flowers and plants provide great atmosphere, and it’s friendlier to the budget when a business doesn’t have to pay for botanical services.”

Perhaps Rose’s most one-of-kind service is an offshoot of her home décor work—furnishing homes. “Our business is different from other home décor stores because we service what we sell,” Rose points out. This includes free home visits to assess the client’s space. “We go out to the home, free of charge, to get a feel for what the client needs,” Rose explains. They take photos, record essential dimensions, and get an overall impression of the space. “We come back several weeks later to present options to the clients, including furniture, artwork, lamps, and accessories. If they like it, we move forward with installation.”

Recently, Rose was able to transform a client’s residence. He had described his life as “black and white” because he wears black daily and his living room was gray and not very inspiring. She showed him some things he could do, including the replacement of some 30-year-old furniture. “With the addition of some strategic color, the transformation was complete,” she says. “He is so proud of his space that he is planning a home-warming party.”

Following the isolation of COVID, Rose says, clients are starving for new looks and color, especially in the warmer tones. Busy lifestyles also lead to clients seeking profession -

al help. “People want to love the space they live in, but they don’t have the time to make it ‘feel’ the way they want. I can envision the space for them through my picture boards, and they can see their home’s potential. Within a couple of weeks, the entire space is reimagined.”

Client Janet Kroger has benefitted from Rose’s handiwork and raves about her service. “I had two large bookcases I didn’t know what to do with,” Janet recalls. “When I saw Rose’s shop, I knew she had the flair and style I needed. She came out to the house and took pictures and measurements. She must have a photographic memory! Rose went back and put together looks for me.” Janet especially appreciated how Rose didn’t try to push anything that Janet didn’t want. “There was no hard sell. She even lets you try pieces, to make sure you are comfortable with them. I love the look of my home now!”

That satisfaction is the driving force behind Rose’s customer service. “The biggest reward for me is seeing people love the space they are in when we finish the job. It is the best part of my business!”

Childhood Obesity Should

We Worry?

Childhood obesity has reached widespread levels in many countries. This is a subject that comes with much controversy but can have serious impacts on physical and mental health. Overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and are more likely to develop diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease at younger ages. To understand this phenomenon and decide how to combat it, we must understand its causes and consequences.

The main culprits of excessive weight are lifestyle preferences, environmental factors, and the cultural environment. At its very core, weight gain is simply the result of taking in more calories than you expend. That means that things like excessive sugar intake, increased portion sizes, and lack of physical activity all contribute to childhood obesity. Obesity can affect children’s physical health, emotional well-being, and self-esteem. Nutritional deficiencies are also commonplace in obese children.

Many experts consider childhood obesity to be one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. So, what constitutes obesity in children? Very basically, it can be defined as an excess of body fat— that is, a child who is significantly overweight for their height. It can be measured in terms of body mass index (BMI), though this measurement is only one part of a balanced workup.

BMI provides a guideline of weight in relation to height and is the accepted measure of being overweight or obese, though it is certainly not the only measure. Your child’s physician can use growth charts, BMI, family history, and other tests to determine if your child’s weight is likely to give rise to health problems. There are conflicting opinions on when parents should take note of developing obesity in their children. According to research, childhood obesity most commonly begins between the ages of five and six years.

As mentioned previously, an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure is causing overweight children (and adults, for that matter). However, there is much evidence to indicate that an individual’s genetic background is also a determining factor.

No matter what your genetic background, sedentary behavior is a huge culprit in weight gain. It’s not hard to understand why children are likely to be more sedentary today than in past decades—you only have to observe the amount of time they spend with their eyes glued to electronic devices instead of engaging in active play. Many experts believe that the biggest cause of childhood obesity is the behavior children pick up from their parents and caregivers. The best way to avoid this is to model healthy behaviors.

One sobering fact about childhood obesity is that its

consequences can be both short-term and long-term. For instance, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are found more often in adults who were obese as children. These conditions can lead to heart disease or stroke. Bone and joint problems can rear their ugly heads in obese adolescents, along with respiratory problems, liver disease, sleep disorders, and even the early onset of puberty and menstruation. Research has revealed that obesity can cause permanent hormonal differences. The mental health effects of obesity can include low self-esteem and depression, especially if kids are victims of bullying.

What can we do, as adults, to make sure our children grow up with a healthy weight?

The answer is simple, though not easy: Help them develop a healthy lifestyle! Encourage physical activity throughout the day (this includes limiting their time on electronic devices). Limit their portion sizes (don’t overserve them), and make sure they eat healthy meals and snacks. Develop a bedtime routine that ensures kids are getting enough sleep.

Don’t forget to be a good role model. Ride bikes with your children; go for walks with your grandkids. Play outside games with them and give them household chores to accomplish. Kids tend to imitate what they see, so make sure they see you eating healthy foods and engaging in physical activity.

Though childhood obesity can have serious consequences, another important fact is that children worry about “being fat” at an alarmingly young age. This cannot be overstated: Help children develop a healthy body image early! It is up to parents and other role models to make sure kids are not being shamed (or shaming others) about their body. Use positive language when you’re talking about bodies—even your own! When kids hear the adults they trust speaking negatively about their own bodies, they are likely to develop the same pattern of self-criticism. Keep the focus on healthy bodies, not the number on a scale. If you’re concerned about your child’s weight, talk to their pediatrician to see if steps need to be taken to protect their health.

Garage Makeover

The Door, the Floor, and Ways to Store!

With summer in full swing, there is no better time to think about cleaning up and decluttering your garage. In fact, why stop there? Go for a full garage makeover—you won’t regret it!

There are lots of reasons to make over your garage, but most folks’ number one reason for doing so is to maximize their storage. After all, what is your garage if not the biggest closet in your house? Like any storage renovation, making over your garage to maximize storage is mostly about organization. You can install peg boards, hanging shelves, folding tables, utility racks, cabinets, and more! Your garage also probably has the added benefit of an additional several feet of empty wall and ceiling space (often above the garage door) that is perfect for hanging bikes, kayaks, or just some nice wire shelving.

Another popular option to add during a garage makeover is a workshop space. This is more than just a storage spot for your power tools. Ideally, you want a clean space where you can use those tools and work on projects safely and comfortably. That includes having a sturdy work bench, organized tool storage, safe and plentiful electrical outlets, sufficient lighting, and insulation to keep the space heated and cooled appropriately. You can even go the extra mile and have entertainment equipment installed so you can listen to music while you work.

One renovation option you definitely don’t want to skip is new flooring. Most garages come with a standard cement floor, which is fine if you’re cool with it breaking down over time. Even if you’re just parking your car in your garage, it’s inevitable that automotive fluids will spill or leak onto the floor, as well as melting snow, road salt, and brine—even just having the hot tires parked on it will degrade the concrete over time. Fortunately, there are lots of floor coating and covering options to extend the life of your garage floor.

For floor coatings, there are polyaspartic and epoxy, as well as the option of a floor sealer. Polyaspartic coating is by far the most industrial and long-lasting of the bunch. It penetrates deep into the concrete floor, creating a strong, impermeable bond that is water- and chemical-resistant. Epoxy floor coating is a more affordable option that can be found at most home improvement stores. While it comes with a surprisingly cheap price tag and the option to DIY, you’ll want to be careful before making this your next weekend project. Epoxy coating will not adhere to an improperly prepared surface, requires carefully mixed materials, and cannot be applied

at all in extreme temperatures. Hiring a pro to do the floor will ensure a job done right the first time.

On the lowest end of the scale are floor sealers. Floor sealers are inexpensive, easy to apply, and will protect your floor from water and stain damage, but they don’t bond to concrete as well as other floor coatings. They will wear off faster and don’t hide any blemishes or patches that your floor may already have.

Floor coverings like interlocking tiles, mats, rugs, and parking pads are all great, affordable options to help protect your garage floor or cover up existing cracks or blemishes. Floor covers have the added benefit of being quick and easy to install.

What about replacing the most obvious feature of your garage—the door? A new garage door can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the style of door and type of replacement. Steel, wood, and aluminum are generally the cheapest replacement options on the market, followed by fiberglass and vinyl. Wood composite and faux wood range from mid-level pricing to the most expensive options.

Garage doors also have varying options of insulation, starting with a good, single-layer door (usually made of galvanized steel). A better option is a three-layer door, often made of stamped steel or vinyl. Three-layer doors look the same as their single-layer counterparts but have the added benefit of an insulated R-value of 6.5 to 19, which helps out a lot on southern-facing garages or in harsher environments—especially near saltwater.

The best option on the market will be a four- to five-layer door, which is usually a semi-customized door combining a standard three-layer with exterior moldings and/or a foam core. These options usually have a realistic wood finish and will have the highest R-value available.

Whether you want to organize a messy garage or completely refit it with new flooring, insulation, and doors, giving your garage any degree of makeover can improve your home life in any number of ways!

Summer Learning Memorable Wildlife Encounters

Summer brings to mind warm weather, outdoor activities, and family vacations. As summer progresses, finding activities to keep children engaged can be challenging. Since summer is a great time to be outdoors, consider spending time in nature with fun and educational adventures. Wildlife encounters for children provide unique and memorable learning experiences.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, “connecting children and nature has important health benefits.” Spending time in nature helps increase physical activity and makes children better environmental advocates. Other benefits include improved attention span, more active imagination, reduced stress and aggression, better problem-solving, and improved classroom performance.

Wildlife encounters help connect children to nature while teaching important values. These programs cultivate compassion towards animals and promote natural resource conservation, increasing awareness and a sense of responsibility for the next generation of our planet. Many different types of wildlife encounters are available. These include zoo educational programs, wildlife encounter programs, camps, and wildlife parks and reserves. Programs range from seminars to multi-day camps.

Zoos may be the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks about seeing wildlife. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo is regularly recognized as one of the top zoos in the country. In addition to its unique habitat exhibits from around the world, the zoo offers several types of educational programs. Day camps are available for children ages three to 18, ranging from half-days to five days, and include educational activities, tours, and games. Zoo classes are available for different age groups and families to help children connect with zoo wildlife through fun and interesting programs.

The Henry Doorly Zoo also has “Sleeping Bag Safaris” for overnight adventures that include guided tours. Campers can sleep in their own pop-up tents near sea lions or snow leopards. If an overnight experience sounds enticing but sleeping on the ground does not, consider a family safari. In this experience, canvas tents overlook the lion’s exhibit and have cots, nightstands, chairs, electrical outlets, and fans. Your family can roast marshmallows or watch an outdoor movie at a campfire pit. This overnight experience includes educational programming, a hike, and interaction with an animal ambassador.

The Henry Doorly Zoo’s Wildlife Safari Park, located in Ashland, Nebraska, is an outdoor adventure that visitors can enjoy from their car and by hiking to overlooks. Summer day camps include tours, animal encounters, and interactive educational experiences on various topics. An Early Learning Kids (ELK) Klub for preschool-aged children features the Park as a classroom to inspire exploration, play, and learning about native wildlife.

The Wildlife Safari Park currently offers a “Jurassic Adventure” experience, “featuring some of the world’s largest and most life-like robotic dinosaurs,” which are located throughout the Park. This experience is available through October 1, 2023.

Try a Wildlife Safari Park Campout for an overnight experience under the stars. Guests can sleep in canvas tents, inside the Wildlife Education Center, inside their vehicle, or in their own tent near their car. Guests will learn about animals native to Nebraska and North America, enjoy a campfire, and get a new perspective on stargazing away from city lights.

For those interested in a personalized or behind-thescenes experience, Wildlife Safari Park has bus tours and backstage experiences. Bus tour options include a guided tour on a bus or a bus tour paired with a walking experience. Backstage experiences offer an opportunity to see the Cheetah or Tiger Conservation Breeding Facility and learn about the care and conservation efforts at the Park.

Wildlife Encounters offers educational presentations, workshops, summer camps, and wildlife birthday parties in the Omaha area. Their organization provides education about the natural world and provides a home for animals in need. Summer day camps are available for children aged 7 to 13 years. Children will meet several animal ambassadors, engage in STEM activities and experiments, learn about zookeeping, hike with wildlife guides, play games, and swim.

For parents who would like to host a special birthday party for their child, Wildlife Encounters offers Wildlife Birthday Parties. Six animal ambassadors come to the birthday party for an engaging, educational, and interactive wildlife show. The birthday child gets to help with some of the animals during the program. Birthday animal ambassadors include kangaroo joey or wallaby, alligator, armadillo, boa constrictor, hedgehog, honey bear, glass lizard, tortoise, bearded dragon, and parrot. Children will have a great time interacting with and learning about animals.

Wildlife encounters are the perfect opportunity for enjoyable family experiences and for children to learn more about the world around them. Spending time in nature reconnects us with the natural world, reinforces the importance of wildlife, enriches our minds and spirits, and provides experiences that are sure to be memorable.

The Path to Change What Will You Find?

Change…I used to hate the word. Even the thought of it brought my wall up. For years, I was so proud to tell anyone who would listen, “I like me just the way I am.”

“We can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” — Oprah Winfrey

The problem with my approach to change was that I got stuck in my life. Really stuck. I didn’t know back then that without creating positive change in my life, I couldn’t grow. Without growth, I couldn’t learn. Do you know what was going to happen next?

“Once you stop learning, you start dying.” — Albert Einstein

About 11 years ago, I met Manny Chavez, the man who would become my husband. Manny is unlike any other person I have met. He is constantly striving to create positive change in his life. He loves to grow; he loves to learn.

In our beginning years, this whole “change” thing made me just a little crazy. When I decided to follow his path, I realized that I wanted what he had…the reward of a better life, a happier life, a more fulfilling life. There were lots of ups, downs, and challenges, but I kept at it. After a while, a fascinating feeling came over me…a feeling I had never felt before. I realized that I LOVED positive change. Yes, it was hard, but at the end of the road, I found I was

happier, I was kinder, I was calmer. I wanted more!

“Sometimes, in life, we take a leap of faith. Remember, the leap is not about getting from one side to the other. It’s simply about taking the leap…and trusting that the air, the universal breath, will support your wings so that you may soar.”

When Manny and I were married almost four years ago, we made the commitment to become one. Because we are one, every day, we strive to make positive change, grow, and learn together. The commitment to this quest was spoken in our wedding vows. When we were married, we gave one another permission to influence each other to become better people. This permission is not granted to anyone else in our lives. Because of this permission and this influence, I am becoming better. My life is better than I could ever have imagined it.

Of course, we have faced stumbling blocks, both with one another and within our circle of friends and family. But every single day, Manny and I change. We grow. We learn. And life is better than I ever knew it could be!

“Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.” — Marianne

Take the leap. Go for it. It’s worth it!
