Appreciate 2023!

Happy New Year!

This is the 36th time I’ve had the pleasure of wishing all of you, our readers, a Happy New Year. When I write my New Year’s greetings, it brings a big smile to my face! It is such an honor to be connected with all of you. I so appreciate you picking up and reading Women’s Edition. We do have an online version of Women’s Edition—sometimes we need the convenience of online access. The truth is, though, so many of us…of all ages…love the feeling of turning the pages of a real magazine. I don’t know about you, but I stare at a computer all day. The last thing I want to do when I get home is look at my phone or computer. There is something very relaxing about reading a magazine or a book. It calms me down.

My husband and I were talking the other night about how much life has changed recently, particularly how we listen to music. Manny and I share a mutual love of music…all different kinds. At night, it is more common to find us listening to music rather than turning the television on. That way, we can enjoy our night together and talk to one another. And we both love to talk! Manny has hooked up the house speakers so that we can decide on the genre to hear and away we go! I remember back in the day of playing albums. When I was a teenager, I would spend the bulk of my paycheck on albums. I still have them…hundreds of them. Manny does, as well. We just don’t have the heart to part with them.

I have a very good feeling about 2023. I think it’s going to be a great year. I feel like things are finally starting to settle down. Customers returned full force into stores for the holiday season. The business owners that I talk with are very positive. Life is moving ahead…in a positive direction!

January is a very big month of birthdays in our family…my daughter, Carissa; my granddaughter, Savannah (who will turn 18!); and my nephew, Jesse. Manny’s mother, Martha, celebrates a birthday this month, as does Manny’s brother, Hector. Happy birthday to all!

I hope you all have a wonderful beginning to the New Year. Yes, 2022 flew by, as usual, but we’re still here having fun!

As Luke Bryan sings, “I believe that days go slow and years go fast, and every breath’s a gift—the first one to the last.”

Juliet, the fast, painless, hormone-free laser treatment for gynecological health that already changed the life of thousands of women around the world. Different ages of a woman's life are accompanied by different experiences with regard to her intimacy and her sexuality. Many women who experience unpleasant symptoms do not like to talk about these issues, sometimes not even with their gynecologist. They can be ashamed and think that they are the only ones going through these issues. In fact, all of these symptoms are quite common in women of different ages and tend to worsen over time. That means that they are not temporary and they are not going to disappear if not treated. The Juliet laser treatment is the gentle solution to rejuvenate your femininity.

Open Houses, Games, and Welcomes—Let’s Eat!

Surprise Brunch Coffee Cake

Mix together 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons of flour, 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 2 Tablespoons of cubed butter, and 1/2 cup of chopped nuts. Mix until crumbly and set aside; this is the topping. Beat 3/4 cup of sugar with 1/4 cup of butter; add 1 egg. Mix 2 cups of flour with 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add alternately with 1/2 cup of milk. Blend well. Lightly stir in 1 and 1/3 cup of jarred mincemeat (there’s no meat in ready-made mincemeat—it’s fruit!). Add a splash of rum or brandy, if desired. Pour into a 9-inch sprayed baking dish. Top with the streusel mix. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes or until a toothpick tests clean.

New Year’s Eve Date-Night Pasta

In a large skillet, brown 1 pound of ground Italian sausage. Pat the grease, remove from the pan, and set aside. In the skillet, cook 1 Tablespoon of minced shallots, 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic, and 1 teaspoon of minced thyme. Cook for 1 minute and then add one 16-ounce can of fire-roasted tomatoes. Add 1/2 teaspoon of garlic chili paste (like Sambal). Put the sausage back into the skillet and add 1/3 cup of whipping cream. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add 10 or 12 fresh shrimp (peeled, deveined, and butterflied). Cook for 5 minutes, until the shrimp are pink. Add 1 cup of cooked (al dente) penne pasta and stir. Serve with shaved Parmesan. Add a bottle of red wine, and you’ve got a party!

Slow Cooker Meatball Appetizers

Put 3 dozen fully cooked small meatballs (your own recipe or a bag of prepared frozen) in a slow cooker. Mix in 1 bottle of chili sauce, 1 can of rinsed sauerkraut, 1 can of whole-berry cranberry sauce, 3/4 cup of packed brown sugar, and 1/4 cup of chopped

onion. Mix well. Cook on low for 4 hours.

Holiday Snack Mix

Into a large bowl, pour 12 cups (total) of goodies, like dry cereals, broken pretzels, nuts, chocolate-coated candies—whatever you have or whatever you like. Melt a block of white chocolate bark and pour over the mixture. Stir well. Pour onto wax paper to dry and break into pieces. Add festive sprinkles, if desired.

Caramelized Snack Crackers

Mix 3/4 cup of butter, 3/4 cup of brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract (or paste). Heat on medium for several minutes, until the sugar is dissolved. Turn up the heat and boil for 3–4 minutes, stirring often. Spread 4 cups of oyster crackers (big fat ones) on a large parchment-lined jelly roll pan. Pour the mixture over the crackers, mixing until all are coated. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of kosher salt over the top. Allow the mixture to cool. Break into pieces. You can also sprinkle the warm crackers with a cinnamon sugar mixture, or spicy cayenne, reducing the salt.

Old South Sweet Potatoes Casserole

Peel, boil, and mash 2–3 pounds of sweet potatoes. Add 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1/2 cup of cream, 1/4 cup of seedless raisins or currants (optional), and 1/3 cup of chopped pecans. Pour the mixture into a greased casserole dish. Top with marshmallows. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Quick Cheese Plate

Mix 1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar with 1/2 cup of olive oil. Add 1 Tablespoon of fresh minced parsley, 1 teaspoon of dried basil, and 2 cloves of minced garlic. Set aside. Cut an 8-ounce package of cold cream cheese in half, lengthwise, and then cut the halves into 1/4inch slices. In the center of a serving plate, pile a variety of pitted olives—Kalamata, Greek, green stuffed, black. Arrange the cream cheese slices around the olives, alternately with slices of white cheddar cheese. Sprinkle a jar of drained pimiento pieces over the top and drizzle everything with the oil-balsamic mixture. Crack a bit of black pepper over the top, if desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with toasted baguettes.

Killer Garlic Cheese Bread

Mix 2 sticks of soft butter with 2–3 cloves of minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of thyme, 1 teaspoon of pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt, and 1 teaspoon of onion powder (use any other spices of your choosing). Cut off the top third of a round bread loaf (Italian or sourdough) and hollow out the center. Slather the inside and outside of the bread with the butter-herb mixture. Place a small wheel of Brie cheese (or another melty cheese) inside the loaf. Replace the top. Wrap the loaf in foil. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Serve on a large platter (tear or cut to eat).

Oven-Baked Brisket

Mix 2 Tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 Tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 teaspoons of pepper, a dash or two of hot sauce, and a dash of liquid smoke (optional). Put a 3-pound chunk of beef brisket (fat side down) into a 13x9-inch baking dish. Pour the mixture over the brisket and rub it in. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Bake the brisket (covered) for 3 hours at 300 degrees. Make a sauce mixture with 1/2 cup of ketchup, 3 Tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard, 1 Tablespoon of soy sauce, and several drops of hot sauce. Pour over the top of the brisket and return to the oven for another hour. Uncover and bake for another 25 minutes. Cut diagonally across the grain into thin slices. Serve as sliders or on toasted garlic breads, with or without juice.

Savory Salmon Cheesecake

Generously butter an 8-inch springform pan. Mix 1/2 cup of dry breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup of grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese, and 1/2 teaspoon of dried dill. Pat into the springform pan and chill. Sauté 1 medium-sized minced onion in 2 Tablespoons of butter until soft (about 6 minutes). Mix 3 and 1/2 packages (28 ounces) of soft cream cheese with 4 eggs, 1/2 cup of shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese, and 1/3 cup of Half and Half. Mix until smooth. Stir in the onion and 1/2 pound of chopped smoked salmon. Pour the mixture into the springform pan. Place the pan in a large roasting pan in the oven. Pour water into the roasting pan halfway up the sides of the springform pan.

Bake for 1 hour and 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Turn the oven off and leave the cheesecake in the oven with the door slightly open for another hour. Cool to room temperature. Remove the sides of the pan. Refrigerate. Serve with assorted toasted crackers, vegetables, and garlic bread.

Personalize Your Wedding

2023 Weddings Feature Originality

A new year makes us think of starting over with a clean slate. It is a time for new beginnings, and 2023 seems a perfect time for celebrating everything new. This includes the post-pandemic wedding boom. We are gathering with our fellow humans again, which makes it easier to celebrate! Weddings have always been about tradition, and modern brides are creating new traditions. Originality is the focus for weddings in 2023. Some trends to look for will be more candid and natural-looking photos, mismatched bridesmaid fashions, and bridal wardrobes featuring several looks.

With so much versatility in gowns today, every brideto-be is sure to find a dress that fits her own personal style. Ruffles have been a top trend for the last couple of years in women’s wear, and their popularity is ongoing. There is nothing more feminine and flattering than flowing ruffles. Replacing the previous mermaid dress styles, ruffles flowing from a fitted torso are romantic and traditional but with a nod to modernity. They are sure to make a dramatic fashion statement! Ruffles can appear anywhere on a wedding gown, from sleeves to shoulders to skirt, and they are sure to make you feel like a princess.

To go along with the princess feel, corsets are bringing a fairy tale vibe to the bridal gown in a way that is both sexy and romantic. Bows are also a modern detail on gowns in 2023. Look for bows on the shoulders, sleeves, and back for a touch of femininity. Even the sleek, simple slip dress

gown can be enhanced with some bow details. Finding the right neckline for your wedding gown can make your look truly yours. Gaining in popularity are two opposite looks! High, halter necklines are making a big comeback and will be a popular trend in 2023. A halter neckline covers your entire bust all the way to your neckline but leaves your arms and shoulders bare. Lace halter necklines are gorgeous, flattering, and elegant.

On the other side of the coin is the deep-V neckline. Glamourous and head-turning, the deep-V neckline is really quite daring. For the small-busted woman who can tolerate using bodice taping to make her dress stay in place, a deep-V neckline is sure to take center stage.

A third neckline trend that has graced recent runways is the mock neck. This silhouette has been recently worn by celebrities and royalty. The mock neck is cut close to the top of the neck

10 January 2023 Fashion Worthy

and is often balanced with cut-outs at the shoulder or neckline. Cut-outs and slits are still with us this season, though they’re not as prevalent as they were last year. There is always room for new trendy interpretations! Collections this season feature striking asymmetrical necklines, with one arm and shoulder bare while the other arm and shoulder are covered with a full-length sleeve.

Some celebrations may feature multiple bridal looks or even an entire wedding wardrobe. Many brides choose one outfit for the wedding rehearsal, a gown for the nuptials, a less formal look for the reception, and yet another outfit for after-party activities. As seen for the past few years, brides are ditching the traditional ball gowns for more modern designs. Separates have become an important part of the choices for brides. Many of these looks can be worn after the wedding or mixed with other separates. For the tailored bride, a white tuxedo suit can be a special individual look to incorporate into a wedding wardrobe. Detachable trains also offer flexibility of looks. Wear the flowing ornate train down the aisle but remove it when the dancing starts!

Pushing white, ecru, and pink aside, blue hues are signaling a change in bridal tradition. Designs featuring pale turquoise and sky-blue colorations will be the latest offering. Separates featuring blues and white are another diverse option. Today’s brides still enjoy picking a color theme for their wedding celebration. Deep sea green along with moss green have become more popular recently, as has dusty blue sage. Rosy pink is also popular and is a beautiful and refreshing choice for a spring wedding.

With the resurgence of the largescale wedding, romantic glitz and glam are back. More and more couples are choosing to have a “twilight” wedding. This has the advantage of great lighting for photos, as the golden hour of twilight is a photographer’s dream. Spring 2023 is bringing many playful options for the modern bride. Whether your celebration is a small family affair or the biggest party you’ll ever host, your look should truly show your personal wedding style.

SuperSlow Zone

a Week, In Shape for Life”

What is complete exercise? Julie Galloway of SuperSlow Zone has the answer. It only requires 20 minutes, twice per week, and it works for everyone…whether you are 25 or 85! You’ll find this amazing fitness solution at SuperSlow Zone in West Omaha.

What exactly is SuperSlow Zone? It is a semi-private exercise studio in which clients perform a 20-minute personal strength training workout. Because this workout uses high intensity and low force, it builds maximum muscular strength. It also increases your cardiovascular efficiency and your flexibility. The protocol for this safe strength training is based on medical research. Slower is indeed better!

SuperSlow Zone is not a gym. It is a very pleasant exercise studio that provides individualized instruction. You’ll work oneon-one with an accredited and certified instructor, using top-ofthe-line, medical grade equipment—and it costs less than hiring a personal trainer.

The owner of SuperSlow Zone, Julie Galloway, spent a number of years in marketing before deciding to take on the company that she fell in love with. It was clear to her that this was a wonderful opportunity to share with the good people of Omaha. So, 10 years ago, she opened up her studio and she has never looked back. “The rewards that I get from seeing people build their strength and get back their health is the best achievement ever,” Julie says.

“People always ask, ‘How can two 20-minute workouts a week give me the results I want?’ The answer is in the combination. The combination of bringing various muscle groups to fatigue improves muscle strength, enhances muscle firmness, and increases your metabolic rate.” Working in high-intensity, low-force exercises encourages maximum muscular strength in the minimum amount of time. Time is something that none of us seem to have enough of, and SuperSlow Zone appears to be a way to feel better, be stronger, and even improve your cardiovascular strength. It seems that I may have wasted a great deal of time on exercise in the past!

As it happens, SuperSlow training was created during osteoporosis research, when clinicians were looking for ways to reverse bone loss without causing injury. That research ended up showing that progressive resistance exercises can help reverse bone loss. The even better news is that it does not matter what kind of shape you are in when you start—the benefits of SuperSlow training are available to everyone. They can even help people with low back pain. Back pain is often caused by weak muscles in the lumbar area, and pain can be significantly

reduced by building up those muscles.

We all want to be fit and healthy and live an active life, but there are many variables that sometimes make that a difficult goal. Having one-on-one training with a certified instructor guarantees that the focus is always on you. Doesn’t that sound much better than a crowded, sweaty gym where you are just one of many? At SuperSlow Zone, the air is kept at a lovely 68 degrees, with fans moving the air around you to keep you nice and cool. When Julie was starting her own business, she found a mentor whose advice she could trust and learned everything she could about the industry. She spent years building up her studio, and she is proud to say that she now has seven certified and accredited instructors, all of whom are dedicated to helping their clients meet their fitness goals. Every client receives the ultimate experience each time they come to work out. The results they achieve are validated by clinical studies.

SuperSlow Zone clients benefit from their strength training every day. Rodger, who has been a client since 2020, says, “I have been coming to SuperSlow Zone for two years. I go twice a week for 20-minute sessions with a one-on-one trainer. During the week, you exercise all the major muscle groups. The results have been good, and it is a very efficient way to get a strength workout.”

Maureen has been coming to SuperSlow Zone since 2016. “The personal trainers are excellent and are trained in getting to know the individual and that person’s needs,” she says. She is happy to report that her issues with low back pain and knee pain have been resolved. “I am stronger and healthier and have increased confidence. I recommend SuperSlow Zone for anyone, male or female, of any age. Give it a try! You will not be disappointed. SuperSlow Zone will lead you down the path to being a healthier and stronger individual.”

SuperSlow Zone West Omaha is located in Pacific Springs Square, at 178th and Pacific. Call 402-708-5679 today for an appointment. Learn more at superslowzone.com/westomaha/.

New Year’s Resolutions

A Time to Reflect

Every year, millions of us make New Year’s resolutions, hoping to

some

change or achieve a personal goal. However, despite the best of intentions, many of us struggle to make good on our plans. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 46 percent of people who make resolutions are successful. That means that over half of the people who set these goals perceive that they have failed. Statistics are just numbers, but hearing about that level of struggle can just add to the stress of keeping a resolution.

I believe a better approach to this annual tradition is to use the time to reflect. Make your resolutions more introspective and achievable. Focus more on possibilities and on improving your chances by learning from the past and then moving forward. Look at these efforts as steps in the right direction, rather than something you have failed to complete according to a set schedule or timeframe. Sometimes, a strictly goal-oriented approach sets up unexpected barriers and makes success unachievable.

It is not surprising that resolutions became so goal-oriented. New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to ancient times and religious traditions. Babylonians used to make promises to their gods at the start of each year to return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans picked up on it, as well, and Christians adopted the practice of pledging to “do better” in the new year. The tradition evolved over time

and has been modified through the years. It is an experience that is shared all over the world.

According to national studies, the most common New Year’s resolutions of Americans are focused on exercising more, losing weight, getting organized, learning a new skill, living life to the fullest, saving more (or spending less) money, quitting smoking, spending more time with loved ones, traveling more, and reading more.

That all sounds great! Rather than saying, “I am going to do these things,” try saying, “I am going to take steps in these areas.” Also, don’t try everything at once! Make it manageable. Keep two or three ideas top-of-mind and write them down. Put them on your computer or on a magnet on the refrigerator. Make the item subtle rather than obligatory. Give yourself an “Attagirl!” when you even just think about the resolution.

I also want to offer some additional, more inward-thinking resolutions to consider. Rather than striving to lose weight in particular, focus on eating healthier. Tell yourself you are going to eat a healthy vegetable at every dinner and have fruit for

Focus on something you are passionate about. Perhaps you are fascinated by art or like to admire creative things. Visit an art museum or craft fair. Feed the passion as a reminder of the things you like.

Take positive steps in your interpersonal behavior. If a person deserves a compliment or an apology, give them one. Try to mitigate gossip. Focus on sharing positive information instead of negative.

Engage in some random acts of kindness. Check on someone you haven’t seen in a while. If you are baking cookies, share them with a neighbor. Bring canned goods to the local pantry. The kindness list is endless, and you never know what will make someone’s day.

One of my favorite resolutions, which is something I have continued since the initial COVID-19 lockdown period, is getting organized—especially, eliminating clutter. Health experts agree that clutter is bad for your health. Looking at clutter literally creates stress. Again, make it manageable. Perhaps it’s taking on a single closet or a small room. If you haven’t used something in a year, donate it to a charity.

Keeping in touch with people you love is another great goal. Rather than just texting every time, send a card or personal note once in a while. In this age of electronic technology, a written note can be unexpected to the recipient and can mean a great deal.

Finally, start a journal. The University of Rochester Medical Center research says that journaling can help battle anxiety, stress, and depression. Keep your journal by the nightstand and only write a few sentences each time. Just pausing to think about the day can be beneficial. Do it when you can, and don’t berate yourself when you forget.

The beginning of the year can be a time for celebration and fun. New Year’s resolutions can be a positive force if you approach them in the right way. Rather than making the theme an unachievable goal, concentrate on taking a step or two. Focus on the items as affirming, and use this time to pause and think about your life. Happy New Year!

Omaha Face Superior Experience With Unmatched Results!

Omaha Face Plastic Surgery & MedSpa combines the richness of a luxurious day spa with state-of-the-art facial rejuvenation technology and the skilled experience of Dr. John Harbison and his team. At Omaha Face, patients can undergo non-surgical therapies like Botox® and fillers as well as surgical procedures like facelift, nose reshaping, or eyelid lift to freshen their appearance. Dr. Harbison, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, takes the time to listen to each patient. He keeps his practice focused, with a limited number of appointments each day. This allows for extra time to tailor a plan with each patient.

“The overall feel at our practice is a lot different than some other practices—kind of a comfortable boutique sort of thing. It’s not rush in, rush out,” says Dr. Harbison. “We keep our operation small so we can pay attention to each individual person. I think that’s helped us position ourselves as one of the premier facial rejuvenation centers in the region.”

Omaha Face treats local patients and those from out of town. Many of their patients are looking for help with skin laxity, lines, creases, jowls, aging around the eyes, and saggy neck issues. Tightening loose skin in the mid to lower face is common and is often combined with a brow lift to eliminate sagging for a more youthful look. Some of the most common procedures performed at Omaha Face are lower facelifts and eyelid rejuvenation.

Dr. Harbison notes that many people who want changes don’t want to call their procedure a facelift, often because of a few botched attempts they’ve seen on television. “People often think of celebrity facelifts. For us, if somebody notices that you had a facelift, then I didn’t do my job very well.” He wants patients to get the look they want but still look like their natural, soft, and human selves. “You’re supposed to look good and refreshed, not like you’ve had surgery. There’s a balance.”

Dr. Harbison says the average age for a patient getting a facelift is often around the late 40s or early 50s. Older patients are still good candidates for this procedure, though healing is a little bit slower. After surgery, patients start to feel better quickly, but a few weeks of recovery time are usually required before getting out and about in public.

Dr. Harbison advises that potential patients commit to surgery for the right reasons—not, for example, because the patient seeks to change their appearance for someone else. “The most important thing is that you’re doing it for you,” he points out. “Of course, when we look at the before and after photos, there’s going to be a noticeable difference, but that’s

what photo galleries are for. We don’t really want other people noticing that you had surgery. We want you feeling good and looking good, and that’s why the most important thing is to do it for you.”

When he works on the right patients for the right reasons, Dr. Harbison notes, they are really happy with the results. Patient C.K. thanks Omaha Face with enthusiasm. “Dr. Harbison and his team were PHENOMENAL! His team answered all my numerous questions and made me feel beyond comfortable with everything. If you’re looking for an individual who will give outstanding results and treat you as his number one priority, go to Omaha Face and you won’t be disappointed! 10/10 stars!”

Dr. Harbison loves the time he spends with his patients. He’s involved in the emotional journey and the healing process, one-onone. He shares successes, tangible results, and post-op care, from start to finish. If someone is concerned with a certain feature, he can often show that change in real time with imaging software and lifelike 3-D images so patients can see how a particular change will work on their own face.

It’s important to find a clinician who makes you feel comfortable. Some non-invasive procedures can be performed by different types of aesthetic providers. For surgery, however, Dr. Harbison advises making sure that the surgeon you’re considering is board certified, with a prudent training background. “Check the surgeon’s credentials, and consider their track record, reviews, and reputation,” he says. “Make sure you feel good when you talk to your surgeon.” After all, your face should be in the hands of a professional you trust.

Omaha Face Plastic Surgery & MedSpa is located at 17838 Burke Street, Suite 101, in Omaha. For more information, call 402-685-3722 or visit omahaface.com.

Alternative Therapies

Be Well in 2023!

It’s 2023! This year, make a commitment to living healthier, with a deeper understanding of alternative therapies for body, mind, soul, and spirit. A healthy body and mind translate to outer beauty and a quality of life unsurpassed. Isn’t that what we all want? You already know about wellness staples such as a healthy diet and regular exercise, but there’s more to explore. Alternative therapies help keep your body healthy, your mind focused, and your spirit connected. Let’s look at specific therapies and their benefits so you can decide what might be a good fit for you.

Float tanks are trending today. This is a tank large enough to float in, filled with water that has such a high salt concentration that you can almost levitate (at least, that’s how it feels). The water is warm, the lights are dim, and the tank is soundproof. Float tanks were originally designed in the 1950s by John C. Lilly, an American physician and neuroscientist. He intended to explore the nature of consciousness through sensory deprivation—an exploration that quickly became controversial. Today’s flotation tanks do indeed insulate their users from outside senses, but as part of a luxurious spa experience.

The most obvious benefit of a float tank is relaxation. You buoyantly stretch out into a float, meditate, and allow the salt to ease aches and stress. The high content of magnesium in the salt is said to leach harmful free radicals from your system. Magnesium helps bone and heart health, too, but check with your physician before you try it, especially if you have any ongoing medical conditions.

In addition to helping you relax, floats can relieve migraines, improve concentration, and increase circulation. Some studies show that regular float tank visits can help hone your creative side and sharpen your athletic performance. Expect to shower after you’re out—you’ll want to wash off the salt before you go back out into the real world.

over-the-counter therapy—the FDA notes that all chelation products require a prescription because they can only be used under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner and for a specific diagnosis. Be sure to check with your medical doctor before undergoing chelation therapy.

We ingest many of the nutrients we need by eating food, and we can take a vitamin supplement when we need a boost in one area or another. Those of us who prefer not to take pills or who want a more direct route for the vitamins entering our body can consider an intravenous (IV) infusion of vitamins.

A healthy body and mind translate to outer beauty and a quality of life unsurpassed.

IV drips for health and wellness are popular today with health-conscious people who want all the benefits of gaining nutrients while bypassing the digestive system. When you pop a vitamin, it’s processed by your digestive system, and your body may not absorb as much of the good stuff as it would if the nutrients came directly into the bloodstream. Absorption of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and hydration are immediate through an IV. Hospitals have been using IV therapy to treat nutrient deficiencies for years. Talk with your doctor about what nutrients you’re missing before you jump in.

Foot baths are another great option to detox. Purge impurities from your whole body through your feet while soaking in a plain tub of warm water for about 30 minutes. An ionizer directs a minimal electrical current, charging atoms in the water. Charged atoms are alleged to remove toxins from your body, pulling them through your feet like a magnet. The evidence is in the water, which changes color during the foot detox. Watch for gunk to float to the top of the foot bath—it doesn’t look great, but it’s well worth it. After all, our feet take a beating every day. Benefits may include higher energy along with sharpened focus, a boosted immune system, and fewer aches and pains. All of that can help improve sleep and overall health.

Chelation therapy is a complementary treatment that removes excess metals like lead, mercury, iron, and even arsenic from the body before they cause health problems. Chelation therapy (intravenous or in pill form) uses special drugs that bind to metals in your blood, and then your body purges them through urination. Chelation therapy is not an

There are various drips for different goals. For example, an IV for help with weight loss includes supplements like carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid. Another IV therapy treats dehydration, whether it’s due to a hangover or an illness that caused excessive vomiting and diarrhea. These IVs replenish your fluids with electrolytes that help symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, and pain. An hour is about all you need to get back on track! A drip with vitamin C, glutathione, and alpha-lipoic acid provides antioxidants that are essential to the immune system and can rid cells of toxins. Although IV therapy is still evolving, studies show that including magnesium sulfate has a calming effect, easing away headaches and anxiety and supporting immunity.

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture has been used for pain relief and general health for thousands of years in other parts of the world, and its proven benefits have now brought it to the mainstream in the United States. Gone are the days of searching far and wide for a specialist—you can find licensed acupuncturists in medical spas, chiropractic offices, and standalone clinics.

20 January 2023 Fresh Concept

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific areas of the body to access energy channels or meridians, adopting a unique style that blends eastern and western approaches to medicine. How? The technique balances the flow of energy or life force (called chi or qi in Chinese medicine), stimulating nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. Have a headache? Back pain? Menstrual cramps? Anxiety? Acupuncture might help. The wispy needles are said to help alleviate symptoms caused by chemotherapy, osteoarthritis, anxiety, and depression. Choose a professional with the proper credentials. Most states require practitioners to pass an exam through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

On the lighter side of alternative medicine, light-emitting therapy literally uses light for skin care, anti-aging, and inflammation reduction. This non-invasive treatment uses different wavelengths of light to produce different desired effects. Red and blue wavelengths absorb into the skin’s outer layer, stimulating collagen for a smoother glow and decreased wrinkles. Blue light therapy helps acne-prone skin, targeting oil glands deeper under the surface. The blue light decreases oil production, leading to fewer breakouts.

Some spas ask you to sit or lie down under the light for about 30 minutes; others use a handheld light wand. Benefits start right away under a relaxing light, though multiple sessions are often the most beneficial. Light therapy is also used to treat depression by helping to regulate circadian rhythms and serotonin production. This treatment is often done at home.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to heal oxygen-starved

tissue and help heal wounds and tissue infection. Oxygen therapy was used in the 1940s by the U.S. Navy, treating deep-sea divers who had decompression sickness. In the 1960s, oxygen therapy expanded to treat carbon-monoxide poisoning. It’s still used today for scuba divers, firefighters, miners, and other people whose occupations leave them vulnerable to a dangerous lack of oxygen. It can also help those with crash injuries, gangrene, bone infections, reduced blood flow in the arteries, and wounds that don’t heal properly.

Oxygen chambers generally consist of a long plastic tube (inside the chamber) filled with slowly pressurized oxygen. You’re likely to feel like you’re inside a pressurized plane cabin. Oxygen therapy isn’t for everyone, so be sure to check with your doctor to determine if it’s right before you try.

Breathing challenges can be treated with halotherapy, an alternative treatment for asthma, bronchitis, and lung problems. Enter a relaxing salt room in a spa environment, meditate and relax for 45 minutes or an hour while you breathe in micro salt particles, and exit with easier breathing, improved skin, and decreased allergy symptoms. Active salt rooms use a generator to circulate the air. Passive salt rooms are filled with rich salts on the floor and in the walls, sort of like a salt cave. Some facilities use both. Many spas offer treatments like facials in a beautiful salt room setting.

Try some alternative therapies specific to your needs (after checking in with your doctor, of course). Go back into the world renewed!

Stark Media Films

Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked.

Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning.

Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time.

Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful.

Chris Coash Corporate Culture Countess

In a time when “quiet quitting” and “help wanted” are more than just buzzwords, business owners are seeking new ways to create a positive work culture that attracts and retains employees. Chris Coash is a corporate culture coach who helps business owners and principal managers create a productive work environment. She is also an expert in systems and operations who is trained to find areas where employees’ strengths are not aligned with their roles. A productive work environment plants the seeds for increased profits and happier employees, and Chris Coash provides the tools for growth.

Chris is a Certified Master Coach for corporations and a former director at Oola, a national company that trains and certifies personal coaches. She has been practicing the principles she teaches for over 17 years in her six Jenny Craig franchises (in Omaha, Lincoln, and Des Moines). Chris attributes the growth of her businesses to the positive and productive culture she creates at each one. All of her managers have been with her for at least eight years— another testament to her positive work environment.

Companies need cash to survive and grow, but growing cash isn’t just about adding customers, Chris says. A company’s culture, systems, and operations significantly affect its ability to generate and maintain positive cash flow. Businesses often need an objective third party to come in and help them take a hard look at where they are and where they want to be. This is where Chris begins.

To provide an organization with the tools for success, Chris first analyzes their current situation. Then, in collaboration with the owners and directors, Chris identifies the business goals and designs an action plan.

The next step is to provide the organization with the tools they need to be successful. Chris helps the company implement its personalized plan while advising leaders and key employees. She provides one-on-one coaching, group workshops, and, when necessary, a complete corporate culture makeover.

Sometimes, Chris notes, employees clash because they have opposing views about the company’s purpose. For example, a customer relations manager may have a “customer-first” view of the company’s mission. In contrast, the business manager is more focused on the bottom line and has a “company-first” view. If both managers can align with the owner’s mission statement of providing the right service to the right customer, they become focused on the same goal. When an organization’s key leaders are aligned, they can align their teams, resulting in a business in which everyone works together effectively.

The struggle to achieve a work-life balance is almost a cliché, but Chris notes that an “in-work balance” also needs to be achieved. “Too often, we focus on the former and neglect

the latter,” Chris says. “We can’t spend 100 percent of our time doing just what we love about our jobs. Everything is accompanied by some necessary tasks that are not in our area of genius.” Having a healthy balance between the things we enjoy and are good at and those we do not enjoy or are not as good at allows us to feel successful at work and enjoy our role within the company.

“When the in-work balance isn’t achieved, the employee becomes frustrated. Frustrated staff members can negatively affect those they work with, even when it isn’t their intention,” Chris says. Her experience with personal and business coaching gives her the skill set to quickly identify frustrated employees and develop solutions for achieving a healthy in-work balance. The goal is not to change everyone’s job description or to allow employees to do only the parts of their job that they enjoy. Instead, the goal is to create a system that works toward everyone’s strengths. When each employee is working at their best, the company thrives.

For Chris, a productive work environment starts with managing communication. The work environment is made up of the people in it, which means it is constantly evolving. A cohesive work environment is created through clear communication, which keeps everyone on the same track, heading toward the same goals. Chris sums this up as the Five C’s: Constant, Consistent, Concise, and Clear Communication.

Most of Chris’s clients are local, in the Omaha and Lincoln area, but she works with national and local companies in many industries. Organizations with 20 to 50 employees are in the perfect zone for culture coaching, she notes. They are growing companies but are small enough to make changes that easily improve the culture.

Chris Coash provides free initial consultations and can be reached by phone at 417-848-3032 or by email at christine@ corporateculturecountess.com. New Year, New You Plastic Surgery Options

Women tend to seek out anti-aging cosmetic surgery beginning around age 40. Aging skin loses elasticity and volume, which is when those pesky crow’s feet, furrowed brows, and jowls start to appear. A face lift tackles these issues. The surgeon makes small incisions behind the hairline, repositions deep tissue beneath the skin, and removes excess skin, smoothing out wrinkles, and restoring shape. General anesthesia is used, and the recovery period is about two weeks.

Eyes may be the window to the soul, but bags and droopy lids can cloud that window. An upper eyelid lift removes fat and extra skin that has lost its shape. A lower lid lift removes and repositions fatty tissue and also tightens muscles, smoothing wrinkles and decreasing under-eye bags and puffiness. Incisions are made in natural eye creases, making them virtually invisible.

Do your brow line and forehead wrinkles make you appear to be constantly scowling? A brow or forehead lift removes excess skin and repositions muscle tissue, correcting those deep Gordon Ramsey-like furrows and creases. The tiny incisions along the hairline are virtually invisible.

Fillers, including Botox, soft tissue fillers, and fat transfers, can be a good treatment option. Botox has been around for a while. This non-invasive wrinkle treatment can diminish lines and creases around the mouth, between the eyebrows, and at the corners of the eyes, as well as in other areas of the face. The toxin is injected into underlying muscle, causing the muscle to relax and gradually smooth out the skin. The effects last three to four months, at which time injections can be repeated. This procedure involves little downtime.

Soft tissue fillers such as Belotero, Juvederm, Sculptra, and Voluma contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring bodily substance. They are injected into the skin using a syringe. Results last between six and 24 months. Treatments are less likely to cause bruising or allergic reactions.

One of the newest forms of wrinkle treatment, fat transfer, uses fat cells from the patient’s own body that are removed through liposuction, cleansed, processed, and injected into the wrinkled area. There’s little chance of allergic reaction, and results are visible for up to several years. Local anesthetic

is used, and patients may experience some post-procedure swelling.

Women dealing with thinning hair or bald spots often seek out hair transplant surgery. Thankfully, techniques have greatly advanced since the days of what we called “hair plugs.” Both follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) have shown positive results. FUT involves removing a long, thin strip of hair from the back or side of the scalp. Individual follicles are removed from the strip and reinserted into balding areas. With FUE, hair follicles are harvested over a larger area. In both procedures, the surgeon creates tiny slits and places a graft in each opening. Some of the hair may fall out initially, but new growth appears in a few months.

Lip augmentation using fillers or implants can provide a full, pouty lip. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid are commonly used. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps skin retain water and maintain flexibility. Silicone implants such as PermaLip are soft to the touch and are available in different sizes and thicknesses, so they can be customized to the look you want. Polytetrafluoroethylene implants are soft and easy to compress. They provide a natural feel and are less noticeable. Injectable lip augmentation techniques can be performed quickly, with little to no downtime. Implant recovery is typically one to two weeks.

A variety of aestheticians can perform non-invasive procedures. For surgery, you’ll want a board-certified plastic surgeon who is licensed to practice in your state. Your pre-surgery consultation is the time to ask any questions you may have, including the surgeon’s experience in performing the procedure, whether you are a good candidate for surgery, possible complications and how they will be handled, and what the recovery period looks like. Ask for before and after pictures of previous patients who have undergone the procedure you’re considering. During the consultation, the surgeon should ask about your medical history, current medications, overall health, and desired results from surgery.

With so many procedures available, you can make 2023 the year to look and feel the best you can be.

Planning a Remodeling Project

Tips to Avoid Homeowner Meltdown

When it comes to a home remodel, there is really no such thing as being too prepared. Understanding what you’re getting into will help you set up a realistic budget, timeline, and expectations. Most people don’t realize the scope of what’s involved, from the cost of materials to the cost of skilled labor to the degree of prep work required. Tearing out flooring or knocking down walls is messy and costly, so it just makes sense to educate yourself.

Begin by checking out products, design ideas, and trends online, and don’t be afraid to pick the brains of salespeople at retail locations. Find out about tile, wood flooring, lighting options, and countertops. Learn about products you may never have selected before. In other words, become a savvy customer!

Projects move along with fewer hiccups when there’s a detailed plan that spells out every step and contains a complete list of selections. No detail is too small. Whether it’s a

bathroom layout, the style of wood trim, or the paint color, try to make as many decisions up front as you can.

Consulting with an architect or designer is a smart investment. These knowledgeable professionals have worked on many remodeling projects and understand the best use of space and traffic flow. They know which decisions will have to be made first to allow everything else to fall into place. Because they have worked with many different general contractors, they are a good source for referrals.

Perhaps the biggest advantage a general contractor offers is peace of mind. A general contractor acts as your project manager, saving you time, money, and stress. Knowledge of industry standards, building codes, proper materials, construction methods, and safe practices are just a few of the key resources that a general contractor brings to your project. They can also guide you on what is a realistic timeline for your project. In some cases, contractors have their own team of employees

to do the work; in others, they employ specialized contractors. Either way, they will only want to work with people they trust to get the job done.

Any contractor you hire should be bonded, licensed, and insured. Always ask to see proof of all three and verify that the information is current and complete. Having contractors with the right credentials can be the difference between a happy experience and a nightmare. Ask for references and be sure to follow up with former clients to ask if they are satisfied with the work done.

A home remodel will likely need a permit. Municipalities have different requirements, but permitting is almost always required for jobs involving safety issues like the modification of gas, electric, or plumbing lines. Most localities have a website for the building department, but it’s always best to call your local permitting office and double check whether or not you need a permit. Bear in mind that if your project is not properly permitted, inspectors can levy a fine and order you to remove drywall so wiring can be inspected. Home real estate inspectors often check public records to make sure any work was properly permitted, so if you’re planning to sell your home in the future and the work was done without proper permits, it could hurt your prospects.

One tip for keeping your sanity during a remodel is being on site frequently so you’re aware of problems that may arise. Be prepared to go over budget—because you will. Even with the best thought-out plans, unforeseen issues will crop up once the work begins, and what seem like minor upgrades can add up quickly. This is especially true in bathrooms and kitchens, where a simple change of fixtures can result in a big cost jump. Always factor in a reserve fund of 10 to 20 percent to cover unexpected costs.

Finally, if you’re living in your home during the renovation, lower your standards. Learn to live with dust and accept that the house will never be quite clean no matter what you do. Above all, tap into your inner patience and hold fast to the belief that, one day soon, the work will be done.

Thyroid Awareness Month

Tiny Gland, Big Responsibility

Let’s start with some background information. A gland is an organ that produces and releases substances that perform specific functions within the body. We have several glands throughout our bodies, and the thyroid is one of them. This small, butterfly-shaped gland is located at the front of the throat and surrounds the windpipe. The thyroid gland produces hormones that help control several vital functions, including our metabolism. When the thyroid works properly, the right number of hormones are produced to keep the metabolism working at the proper rate.

If the thyroid is not working properly, it can have a big impact. When the body makes too much thyroid hormone, the resulting condition is called hyperthyroidism. If the body makes too little, the diagnosis is hypothyroidism. These conditions need treatment from a healthcare provider and should not be ignored.

Common symptoms that can alert you to thyroid problems include changes in your energy level and mood. Someone with hypothyroidism tends to feel tired, sluggish, and depressed. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism symptoms can include anxiety, trouble sleeping, restlessness, and irritability.

is

Month,

A blood test can check the thyroid hormone levels and reveal the type of thyroid problem that needs to be treated. The process of diagnosis also includes a physical exam that checks to see if the thyroid gland is of unusual size. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can be treated with oral medications. In some cases, however, surgery is needed to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.

Other common diseases related to the thyroid gland include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, goiter, Graves’ disease, and thyroid nodules. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the thyroid gland. It can lead to developing a goiter, which is a swollen thyroid gland. Graves disease is an immune system disorder that can lead to hyperthyroidism. Common symptoms include sweating, irregular heartbeat, weight loss, protruding eyes, and nervousness.

Atypical growths in the thyroid gland can be noncancerous or cancerous. Thyroid nodules are tiny noncancerous growths in the thyroid gland that may need to be surgically removed. Thyroid cancer can also occur, especially if someone has undergone radiation treatment to the head, neck,

and we want to share some important facts about this little gland that packs a big punch when it comes to your overall health.

or chest. Most thyroid cancers can be successfully treated.

Depending on the type of thyroid condition, it can be treated by a primary care provider or an endocrinologist. If the diagnosis is cancer, an oncologist will need to be consulted. If the thyroid gland needs to be partially or fully removed, you’ll need a surgeon.

An estimated 20 million people in the Unites States have some type of thyroid disorder. Anyone, including children, can be affected by thyroid disease, but women are about five to eight times more likely to be diagnosed with a thyroid condition than men.

Other things that put you at higher risk of thyroid disease include a family history of thyroid disease; the presence of type 1 diabetes, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis; or taking medication that is high in iodine. Women older than 60 years are at higher risk, as are people who have been treated in the past for a thyroid condition.

As with most health issues, there is no way to truly guarantee that you will not be diagnosed with a thyroid condition. However, there are things you can do to reduce your chances of developing a thyroid problem. A very specific thing you can do is ask for a thyroid collar if you are getting an x-ray. This is a lead-filled wrap, like a very heavy scarf, that protects the neck from the radiation in an x-ray.

More general thyroid safety measures include avoiding smoking, limiting soy in your diet, and getting enough of the nutrient selenium (found most in animal proteins). Routinely stand in front of the mirror to look and feel for any unusual lumps or swelling in the neck area; discuss any changes you notice with your primary care provider. Another easy way to keep on top of potential thyroid issues is to make it to that annual physical every year.

Thyroid conditions should be treated—not just to alleviate symptoms but to avoid future problems such as brittle bones and heart disease. It is worth noting that many thyroid conditions can be cured, not just treated. Do not delay in talking to your health care provider about the health of your thyroid and ask what you can do to help keep your thyroid healthy.

Claxton Fireplace Center

“Answers For All of Your Burning Questions”

In the midst of winter, enjoying the warmth of a cozy fire indoors with family and friends is one of the season’s pleasures. If your home doesn’t have a fireplace yet, you don’t need to miss out—there are many options for homes without an existing built-in fireplace. If you would like a fireplace or have one that needs a face lift, Claxton Fireplace Center is ready to serve you.

Dan Claxton, owner and operator of Claxton Fireplace Center, has spent more than 36 years in the fireplace services industry. He was introduced to the business when he went to work for his father-in-law, selling fireplace glass doors with blower systems. Next, he worked for a lighting company, at which he created a fireplace division. After several years with the company, he decided to strike out on his own and opened Claxton Fireplace Center in 1994.

Dan and his team of professionals, including seasoned craftsmen, have over 90 years of combined certified hearth experience. The company recently relocated to the Oakview Mall area with an expanded warehouse and a

showroom that has over 70 fireplaces on display. Claxton offers a wide variety of services, both inside and outside the home. They are best known for designing and installing new fireplaces, doing fireplace makeovers, and providing chimney sweep services. However, they also design and install outdoor kitchens and fireplaces, fire pits, and tables. They install and service retractable awnings as well as interior and exterior vertical drop solar shades.

Dan Claxton, Owner

Whether you want to install a new fireplace or remodel your current fireplace, there is an option to fit your style and budget. Choices include direct vent, vent-free, wood-burning, and wood or gas stoves. Fireplace fronts can be personalized with materials like brick, tile, slate, marble, granite, stone, stainless steel, or glass. Mantels may be customized using wood, stone, and marble. Custom cabinetry can be designed to provide storage and display space.

If creosote builds up in a chimney, it can cause a chimney fire, which can lead to a house fire. “Cleaning and inspecting chimneys is an extension of what we already do,” Dan explains. Chimneys are swept and then inspected by running a color camera up the chimney. The camera checks the integrity of the flue, looking for issues like cracks, missing mortar joints, holes, or excessive creosote. Identified issues are repaired. Dan reports that they often receive referrals from chimney sweeps who do not provide repair services. Claxton also addresses the structural integrity of brick and wood chimneys. Masonry caps, or crowns, are installed on top of chimneys for protection.

When it comes to fireplace projects, Dan says, “we don’t just sell someone a fireplace. We handle the entire project from start to finish.” He personally meets with customers to conduct a needs analysis and determine what they want in terms of form and function. “I show them products that will meet their needs and can usually provide a proposal on-site, complete with the price.” This allows the customer to make changes or look at alternatives to stay within a specified budget. “We want to provide excellent information and pricing

Dan provides customers with a detailed quote, which is unique in the industry. “Our proposal contains a line item for every single component used in the job, including labor.” The proposal also includes the lead time needed for the project. “If it is a multi-day project, we specify daily work, so customers know what to expect each day. We want to provide accurate information.”

Claxton’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “The customer drives everything we do,” Dan asserts. “We have the best team in the area! We know our business inside and out and provide consistent service.” Dan believes in doing what is best for the customer. “Hiring a business is an exchange of trust,” he points out. “Customers work hard for their money. By hiring us, they say they trust Claxton Fireplace Center. It’s all about treating them properly and addressing their needs and concerns.”

Dan finds this process very rewarding. “I love to see a customer’s happy expression when they see the finished product. It means they are extremely satisfied with what we did for them. A fireplace is not just something to look at,” he concludes. “It is a place where family memories are often made.”

Claxton Fireplace Center is located at 3125 Oak View Drive, Suite 103, in Omaha. The showroom is open Monday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Call 402491-0800 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine

Helping Parents Realize Dreams!

The Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine offers world-class infertility treatments for new or growing families. Dr. Elizabeth Constance, Director of the Fertility Preservation Program, wants all women to know that egg freezing is an option to help preserve reproductive ability. Some women are in their prime reproductive years, biologically speaking, but aren’t ready to start a family yet. In some cases, women are building their careers during these years and want to have a family later. In other cases, a medical treatment (like chemotherapy) might damage eggs, and it’s best to preserve them before treatment begins. No matter what the reason that conception will be delayed, freezing unfertilized eggs can be a good solution.

“Fertility preservation leaves all doors open. I love empowering women to make the best decisions possible regarding when or if they grow their families. That’s what drives me to make sure that women have the information and the ability to write their own journey,” Dr. Constance says.

Dr. Constance points out that reproductive technology is constantly evolving, and that outcomes and success rates

for starting or continuing a family are getting better all the time. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure in which a woman’s eggs are fertilized outside of the body. This procedure is usually used by those who have challenges getting pregnant. In the IVF lab, among microscopes and lab equipment for identifying eggs and performing embryo biopsies,

large liquid nitrogen tanks store frozen eggs and embryos (not visible to the naked eye) in what are called “straws.”

“Egg freezing is in the news right now following Jennifer Aniston’s interview about her unsuccessful fertility journey,” says Dr. Constance. “In the early days of IVF, we fertilized eggs and froze embryos. The ability to freeze unfertilized eggs safely and effectively has been around for about 20 years, but the science has only been perfected in the last 10 years. That leaves a lot more doors open for building a family when you’re ready.”

Dr. Constance stresses that egg freezing is very individual. Success depends on many factors, including how many eggs are available, the woman’s age, and the egg quality. The quality of eggs starts to decline around age 35, and even more steeply around age 40, but there is no specific cutoff age.

“The trajectory is different from person to person,” Dr. Constance notes. “An individualized consultation and bloodwork to assess where you are on that trajectory can help determine the probability of success. Infertility affects one in eight individuals. We’re seeing a lot more awareness of that issue, and more women have the knowledge to be proactive and preserve that option for the future.”

The process of freezing an unfertilized egg is similar to using IVF to conceive. The protocol involves about two weeks of injectable medication to stimulate the ovaries, followed by a vaginal procedure done under anesthesia to remove eggs from the body. If someone chooses IVF to get pregnant right away, the eggs would be fertilized and grown in the lab before freezing.

If pregnancy is desired at a later date, the unfertilized eggs can be frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen on location in the IVF lab. We only have about 10 years of data on frozen unfertilized eggs using current technologies. From these data, the science is clear that frozen eggs will last at least 10 years and, most likely, well beyond that. “I typically counsel people that their frozen eggs will be good longer than their own reproductive window,” Dr. Constance says.

Sam S. says his experience at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine was great. “If you have to go there, you are already under quite a bit of stress,” he points out. “The nurses and doctors were wonderful to work with. We had everyone there being hopeful but without unrealistic expectations. It’s good to feel like the staff is on your side.” He’s delighted to report that their IVF worked on the first try.

There are about as many types of reproductive medicine as there are individuals who need to use it, Dr. Constance concludes. She hopes that every couple or individual who has questions about egg freezing schedules an appointment with a specialist. “An appointment to gather information and ask questions does not mean you have to move forward,” she says. “It doesn’t lock you into testing or treatment—it’s totally optional. People can decide from there if this is something that fits in their life right now.”

Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine has locations in Omaha (7308 South 142nd Street) and in Lincoln (8560 Foxtail Drive, #201). To learn more or make an appointment, visit heartlandfertility.com or call 402-267-9146.

New Puppy Wellness Vets and Tech to Help Your Pet

If your holiday celebrations included welcoming a new puppy, great times are in store for you! Adding a young pet to your family promises many years of happiness and healthy benefits. The first step to achieving more joy requires you to find a veterinarian who will partner with you to keep your new pet healthy. Finding one nearby makes life easier! Start by asking friends and neighbors where they take their pets, and then visit some offices with your pet in tow. Choose a vet who communicates well with you and relates well to your puppy.

Once you choose your vet, you should make an appointment for an initial wellness check, best when your pup is four to eight weeks old. This is a thorough exam, a baseline for your pup’s health. Skin, coat, stance, and weight are quick visual checks. Examining ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and teeth will tell your vet a good deal about your pet’s health. You can provide information about your pet’s eating habits, exercise frequency, and elimination schedule. Your vet may obtain a complete blood count, urinalysis, biochemistry profile, and thyroid hormone testing.

New puppies also need vaccinations. A puppy’s immature immune system means very early vaccination is ineffective. At about six weeks, vets often administer a 3-in-1 shot protecting your pup against distemper, parvo, and hepatitis. Not all vaccines are necessary for all dogs. Protection against Lyme disease, for example, is important in some locales but not others and depends on the dog’s lifestyle. The rabies vaccine, which is a matter of law in many states, is initially given around four months. This vaccination is repeated annually and is generally required for licensing.

Another important treatment is for heartworms, something dogs can get from just one mosquito bite. It is a nationwide threat for at least part of the year, and its effects can be serious or even fatal. Formerly, it required an annual injection. Fortunately, a once-per-month chewable tablet has now been proven 95 percent effective. These tablets have few side effects and are readily available online and in many pet supply stores. You and your vet will choose the best option for your dog. If you choose the tablet, set reminders on your phone to administer it.

Licensing and tagging dogs is required by law in many states and municipalities. Proof of vaccination provides assurance to all who care for your pet (and is likely required by doggie day cares or boarding facilities). It is also invaluable evidence in case your dog bites someone who decides to sue you.

Advancing technology helps pets and their owners, not only in terms of health but also in terms of locating a pet that has strayed from home. Microchipping has been around for some time. The chip is installed between your pet’s shoulder

blades when your pet is anesthetized for spaying or neutering (at about six months). This timing negates the need for additional surgery. Your vet will check at your dog’s annual check-up to make sure the chip is still readable. Early brands required different readers, but universal readers are spreading nationally. This is great news, since it means that a lost dog is more likely to be found.

Another tech advantage for pet owners uses the growing number of satellites aloft. GPS pet trackers use satellite signals and cellular data information to communicate your pet’s location to your phone.

Also available are Bluetooth-only trackers. They communicate location if it is within Bluetooth range of your phone—typically, within 30 to 100 feet. Family members and neighbors with Bluetooth using the same tracker system can spread out and cover much more territory. It’s like geo-caching with a found pet as the reward!

AirTag is an Apple tracking device that uses both Bluetooth and a more precise positioning technology called ultra-wideband (UWB) to pinpoint the tracker’s location. Using your iPhone, you can locate the AirTag attached to your pet’s collar with compass-like accuracy.

Fi, the first tracking collar, uses the LTE-M low-power, long-distance cellular network. This signal reaches farther than conventional cellular networks. It can locate your dog, even in remote areas.

With the ever-ready help of your vet to ensure proper feeding and vaccinations, the arrival of a holiday pet can lead to a long and loving relationship. Many national organizations, legal precautions, and developing technology are also on your side. If you did not get a new pet at the holidays, perhaps it is time for you to visit a shelter to rescue the dog just waiting for you.

Mr. Market meets Ms. Pickleball

Are You in the Game?

Unless you spent the last six months on a distant planet, you have probably played pickleball, or talked to someone who plays pickleball, or seen a snippet about the game on the evening news. Pickleball—a sort of combination of ping-pong and tennis—is the hottest and fastest-growing sport in the country today, attracting fans of all ages and all sporting abilities. Pickleball can be a simple and inexpensive game…or, if you choose, pickleball can be complicated and pricey.

Pickleball players fall into three general categories. The first group is the newbies. They haven’t been playing for very long. They’re fond of the game but not fanatical about it. The newbie approach to pickleball involves guidance from a pickleball instructor or mentor. Most of the players who fall into this category participate in an organized fashion, where the instructor spends part of the court time conducting drills and the rest of the time monitoring real game situations. Some newbies eventually move on to the next group, but there are those who never really get past the newbie stage.

The second group is the recreational players. Their motivation and reward is twofold. First, there is the exercise component of the activity. Second is the social component of the game. Their goal is to play pickleball at a reasonable level of proficiency—not too cold and not too hot. At some point, they become content with their game and make no further effort to increase their skill level. They are comfortable with their current equipment and don’t salivate over the latest and greatest new paddle or shoes. Rarely do they compete in tournaments.

The third group is made up of competitive players. These are players who are serious about the sport, and they play to win. Their off-court time is spent researching the newest equipment and working out in the gym to improve their strength and stamina. The cost of paddles and shoes is not an issue—winning is the goal. They are willing to spend big bucks for advanced coaching and lessons, and they’re eager to travel across the county to participate in competitive events.

Parallel to the growing number of pickleball players is the explosion in the number of investors who manage their own portfolios. There are about 70 million investors, who own and control $16 trillion on deposit with the big three discount brokerage firms. Just like we did with the pickleball players, we can break these investors down into three categories.

The first group is analogous to the pickleball newbies. They want to be “in the game” but desire some involvement from an investment professional. The most common form of involvement requires a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), who provides them with both financial planning and investment management. Most of the RIAs utilize one of the big three discount brokers as their asset custodian and conduit to the exchanges. The Wall Street

business model requires their brokers to use the one-sizefits-all robo investment management programs run by their home office. Because they are independent, RIAs are able to customize their robo accounts based upon each client’s asset base and temperament. Also unlike brokers, RIAs have a fiduciary commitment to their clients, which means they must work in their clients’ best interests, not their own.

The second group of investors is similar to recreational pickleball players. These are investors who are willing and able to manage their own assets but are not obsessed about maximizing their investment return. Most of the investors in this group rely entirely on index funds, and their investment philosophy is primarily “buy and hold.” The low fee structure of the discount firms plays a major role in the investment success of this group.

The third group of investors is analogous to the competitive pickleball players. They take the investment process seriously and are involved on a regular basis. Like the recreational group, their primary investment vehicle is index funds, but they tend to go farther and use a broader range of funds. They also take advantage of the flexibility that ETFs provide. The rise of the discount broker has allowed this group to expand. Without the ability to trade anywhere online for free, this group would not exist.

Neither investing nor pickleball is a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Getting the most out of your investment program is similar to getting the most out of your pickleball game. It begins with identifying your options. Each year brings new opportunities to those willing to take the time and effort to explore them. The next step is to determine which option best fits your current life situation and temperament. The final step is execution. Investing, like pickleball, is not a spectator sport.

The Intriguing Orchid

Easy to Grow, Easy to Love

Ah, the mysterious allure of orchids. It seems that orchids grow on every continent (with the exception of Antarctica). Orchids can be traced back to 500 BC in China, Rome, and Greece. In the 18th century, explorers found and carried orchid varieties back to their home nations. And no wonder they couldn’t leave them behind! Orchids can be rather addicting. Many people find that once they have one, they want another and another and then another. As I have dabbled in orchids over the years, I have had some good luck and some not-so-good luck with growing them and getting them to bloom, but there is no argument that they are incredibly fascinating!

Orchids form one of the largest families in the entire plant kingdom, and there are approximately 25,000 species worldwide. Within the species, you will find about 100,000 varieties, as of this writing. Interestingly enough, during the Roman period, orchid roots were eaten or steeped as an aphrodisiac. (Hmm….) In the 19th century, it became much easier to transplant them from the tropics to colder climes. Then came advances in glass manufacturing, which led to greenhouses. Of course, this fueled the wealthy and cultured women and men of high society to collect rare specimens that they could raise in the controlled environment of a greenhouse. The Victorians loved their orchids, and raising them and caring for them became all the rage.

Sadly, entire orchid forests were stripped of millions of orchids over time. Today, many orchids are on the endangered species list, and most orchid collection is banned in forests around the world. The absence of orchids in a once habituated area is a red flag indicating that the entire ecosystem is endangered. Now, species are only cultivated from seeds in orchid hothouses.

Today, orchid growing is a very popular hobby that can be enjoyed by people from all walks of life (not just the privileged few). Avid orchid growers will tell you that orchids are not hard to grow and that they make excellent accent plantings around the home. They will also tell you that they only require water once a week and that it is imperative that they

receive weekly feeding with a fertilizer designed for orchids. Aficionados advise that you water your orchid with three ice cubes once a week and that you keep the plant in a cooler spot at night. Too much water can lead to root rot, crown rot, and even fungus (yikes)! Something that I did not know is that you need to refresh the potting mix when the orchid stops blooming. It is actually possible to keep an orchid plant alive for 10 to 15 years (with the correct care, of course). In the wild, orchids live about 20 years, so that is promising.

Once you receive one of these delightful plants, it pays to know that light is a key element for success in getting them to bloom, but it must be indirect light. You should position your orchids in bright windowsills facing east or west.

Most orchids require a four-, five- or six-inch pot at most. Some older specimen plants will need an eight-inch pot, but the majority of orchids sold in stores will do just fine with smaller pots. With proper drainage, these beauties will thrive in almost any type of container. Plastic and clay pots are the most common. Keep in mind that the soil in plastic (non-porous) pots actually retains moisture better than soil in (naturally porous) clay pots.

I always like to know what a specific flower symbolizes, and it appears that orchids symbolize thoughtfulness, refinement, fertility, beauty, charm, and love. I find them to be the perfect bloom to celebrate many moments in life. Green orchids are also associated with nature, longevity, good health, blessings, and good fortune. In Japan, you may find green orchids in homes or offices to bring good fortune, as green is the color of luck and harmony.

The mystique that surrounds orchids through history keeps them at the top of the luxurious gift list. They are a most exquisite choice as a gift for any occasion, and they will delight any recipient who is lucky enough to receive one. I love giving orchids as gifts because they last so long and can bloom year after year when cared for properly. The most popular orchids are the easiest to grow! Though finding out that orchids are not hard to care for may remove some of their mystique, it will not remove any of their beauty. Whether you choose an orchid for yourself or to give as a gift, you will not be disappointed.

Home Health Care

Enabling Seniors to Age in Place

Home health care provides needed assistance after an injury or surgery, during an illness, or when loved ones are no longer able to care for themselves. Categories of caregivers include personal care aides, home health aides, licensed or certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, and registered nurses.

Most communities have a home health agency or agencies with pre-screened caregivers who are experienced with a variety of illnesses and conditions. Advantages of using an agency include having backup caregivers and the ability to upgrade quickly if more experienced staff is needed. The family will not have to worry about liability should a worker be injured nor handle all the paperwork involved in payroll and taxes. An agency will likely have skilled nursing available along with personal care and household services. Caregivers also provide important social interaction and companionship.

Assistance with daily activities, along with things like shopping, cleaning, laundry, and meal prep, may be all your loved one needs to remain independent at home. This was the case with one of our

older family members after a mild stroke. Transportation to medical and dental appointments was a plus. More complicated health issues might require skilled nursing. Injections, catheter care, ostomy care, or help with diabetes management are some examples.

After a hospital stay, quality home care ensures the patient receives critically important follow-up. Home health providers help patients (and their families) manage their medical needs, often avoiding re-admission to the hospital. Staff will check for safety concerns, review medication, and go over instructions.

After-surgery care might include wound care, intravenous or infusion therapy, checking vitals, managing meds, and coordinating care with doctors and other caregivers. Occupational, physical, or speech therapy may also be needed. Doctors may prescribe other therapies after release, such as oxygen or infusion, that require special equipment.

The Visiting Nurse Association may provide home care in your area. In our region, they offer home health aide services to those with

46 January 2023 Seasons of Life
The recent pandemic spurred huge growth in the need for health care delivered to the patient at home. That need continues to expand with our growing population of seniors. Older citizens are choosing the convenience of home health services more than ever. In the United States, seniors have a 70 percent chance of requiring long-term care, and 65 percent of that group will opt for health services at home. Finding the best of such care requires families to acquaint themselves with all the services now available.

limited resources. In other areas, they may provide full services, including medical care. Search online for VNA services near you.

With advances in technology, some seniors may benefit from virtual visits or remote health monitoring. Such things as glucose monitoring as well as diet and dementia tracking offer new possibilities.

Many seniors are eligible for Medicare home health care benefits if a Medicare-approved agency that meets certain criteria is utilized. Generally, the patient must be homebound, have specific needs such as therapy or skilled nursing, and have certification from a physician or other medical professional working with a doctor. It is well worth researching whether your loved one qualifies. They may be eligible for home health aides to assist with daily living needs in addition to medical care. Check medicare. gov to learn more.

Choosing the best provider will help ensure the safety and well-being of your loved one. The internet can provide much information to begin the process. Sources include National Agency Location Service and medicare.gov’s service directories. Ask your family member’s physician to provide a list of agencies in the area. Recommendations from friends or those who work in health care are helpful.

Interview potential providers to see how well they communicate. What is their oversight procedure? Of course, certification and training are vital. Each state has its own requirements for licensing and certification. Medicare-certified (CMS) providers must also meet federal standards.

What services does your loved one need? Doctor’s care, nursing, palliative care, therapies, or non-medical assistance? Often, multiple chronic conditions, such as diabetes or arthritis, must be addressed along with the primary need. The personality of the individual provider plays into the hiring decision, as well. Compatibility may be right up there with expertise if your loved one is to be happy receiving services at home.

Cost of services may be a consideration. Check to see if there is any assistance available from Medicare or Medicaid, long-term care insurance, VA benefits, and the like. Cost varies greatly depending on location and the patient’s needs.

Family caregivers can’t do it all! Getting outside help is beneficial for the one who needs assistance and gives the family a break—together, that brings everyone peace of mind.

2023 Resolutions Saying No Without Guilt

New Year’s resolutions, here I come! For 2023, I’m going to make a resolution that I believe will help me be a much happier person. I won’t say yes when I want to say no, and I won’t say no when I want to say yes. Got that?

The problem with always doing what everyone else wants us to do is that we lose ourselves. When we do this, we stop taking care of ourselves. And taking care of ourselves should be our number one priority.

I think we can all relate to the ingrained habit of agreeing to do something that we really don’t want to do. At times like those, our gut tries to get our attention because it is tied into knots. Our breathing becomes shallow. We swallow hard and agree to do something that someone has asked us to do. Yup… most of us have done it our whole lives. No more!

“When you say yes to others, make sure you are not saying no to yourself.”

Being raised as a good, obedient, middle child in a family of eight, I learned at a very young age how to be a great people pleaser. It really was quite simple…all I had to do was what they asked me to do. Yes, yes, yes. That way, everyone was happy, right? Wrong.

This quote made me laugh out loud because I recognized that so many times I would say yes and find myself being resentful. Maybe not right away, but over time I would come to a slow boil. I admit, it’s the guilt thing that has stopped me from speaking my mind.

The flip side of my New Year’s resolution? I will no longer say no when I want to say yes. It’s a very similar feeling in my gut. Saying yes when I want to can be as challenging as saying no when I need to. Being strong and confident enough to know when to say yes and when to say no will be a great leap forward in creating my own happiness, and that is a great New Year’s resolution.

Pop! Goes the Weasel

Are You Ready for the Pop?

In the past, I’ve written about making resolutions for the New Year in an effort to better our lives. This year, I’ve actually acted on my resolution to declutter. We have rented storage sheds for years. Such a handy way to get clutter out of the way! It seems so clever, until you realize that it’s—you guessed it—out of sight, out of mind. Of course, when you’ve had things in storage for a while (like 10 years and counting), you can’t just throw things out. Every box has to be sorted and evaluated.

My sons cleaned out one storage shed a year ago. They wouldn’t let me out there to help because they knew I would have to go through every box. I knew most of that stuff had been there for 30 years or more and just asked them to bring over whatever they thought was worth saving. Thankfully, I didn’t get much.

This time was different. My stuff in retirement storage was mostly books and materials I used in 10 years of individualized tutoring. Some of my boxes even included texts and papers from college classes. While sorting, I came across a box of books from a children’s literature class. It tweaked memories of how children’s stories so often contain messages, lessons, and morals.

Shortly thereafter, I happened to hear some children singing the song, “Pop! Goes the Weasel.” Do you remember the

words? “All around the mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel. The monkey thought it was all in fun. Pop! goes the weasel.” My brain went into analysis mode. This is an allegory for life! That mulberry bush might be life as usual…everything is ordinary and normal. The monkey might be children (or adults!) going through life, happily chasing their future dreams (signified by the weasel) without a care, not expecting anything to change. They’re complacently thinking they are ready for any contingency…ready for anything that might… pop up. Then, Pop! The unexpected happens.

The verses go on to mention spending money on little things (a penny for some sewing thread; a penny for a needle) and points out how the money goes. Pop! goes the idealistic balloon of hopes and dreams we can no longer afford.

I wonder if I had that insight when I was taking that class in college or if I really did internalize some of the lessons taught. I do know that I’m seldom thrown by the unexpected. I may have inherited that trait from my mother…she was pretty unflappable.

We’ve all faced a lot in the past couple of years. Some have suffered…and are still suffering…more than others. How are you doing? Are you…and your kids…ready for that pop?

Can you see why my sons don’t want my help cleaning out storage sheds?

Transmission Health Check

Does Yours Need Some TLC?

To put it simply, the transmission is what makes a vehicle go. It moves the power from the engine to the wheels, making sure that the engine spins at the correct rate…not too fast, not too slow. It does this by shifting gears in a fashion similar to that of a multi-speed bicycle. Just like a bicycle, a car that’s in too high a gear will be hard to get started from a stop. A car that doesn’t have a transmission is like a bike without a chain—it won’t go at all. Keeping your car’s transmission well-maintained is exceedingly important. If you don’t, you’ll lose fuel economy or even the ability to drive your car entirely.

If the transmission is such a vital component of the engine, does that mean that all transmissions are the same? Nope! Transmissions come in manual and automatic. A manual transmission is like a more powerful version of a bicycle’s gear shifter. When you adjust the gear shift, it works the same as moving the bicycle chain and moves your car into a new gear. (This takes me back to my first car, which had a manual transmission. I’ve always been pleased that I learned to drive one, and it’s something you never forget!) An automatic transmission is basically an automatic gear shifter. Instead of manually shifting the gears with a clutch, the automatic transmission does everything for you.

What kind of maintenance will prevent transmission failure? As with many of your vehicle’s systems, there are some things you can do yourself and some things to leave to a professional. First of all, check your transmission fluid about once a month. On many cars, checking the transmission fluid is as easy as checking the oil (your mechanic can show you how). The fluid should be a bright red color and should smell sweet. Second, make sure you’re using the right type of transmission fluid. Consult your vehicle’s owner manual to determine what type of transmission fluid is best for your car. The last thing you can do is avoid sudden starts and stops when you’re driving (they make your car’s transmission work harder than necessary).

When you schedule your vehicle’s annual maintenance, be sure that your mechanic or dealership is planning to flush the transmission. Some older cars have a transmission filter; if yours does, it should be changed regularly.

Experts have a few more tips to keep your transmission running smoothly. Do not drive on a spare tire for an extended period of time because it puts too much strain on the transmission. Avoid using your vehicle for towing if it is not designed to do so. Heavy loads can cause the transmission fluid to oxidize or burn; this can damage the

transmission.

Your transmission will let you know when it needs some love and care, and some signs are more urgent than others. Is there a burning smell coming from your car? You need to get it to an auto shop immediately. Does your car make weird noises when it is in neutral? That might indicate you need new transmission fluid. Refusal to switch gears or slipping gears is scary and very dangerous. Symptoms can include delayed acceleration, strange noises, and a harsh response to changing gears. Transmission fluid on the floor of the garage is a sure sign that you have a leak that needs to be addressed. Of course, there is also the good old Check Engine light. Could be minor, could be major…get it checked out. How often you need to get a transmission tune-up depends upon the type of car you have. Typically, older vehicles with non-electric ignitions should be serviced every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or annually (whichever comes first). Vehicles that are newer, with fuel injection systems and electronic ignition, can generally go at least 25,000 miles before they need service. If you keep up with routine transmission maintenance, your car’s transmission can last up to 300,000 miles.

If your vehicle does end up needing a new transmission, is it better to replace the transmission or just get a different car? A brand-new transmission costs anywhere from $1,000 to $7,000, so you should consider the value of your vehicle before you decide. In most cases, if you do require a new transmission, a full custom transmission rebuild is the best option. During this process, the transmission is completely dismantled and every component is inspected. Good parts are cleaned, and damaged parts are replaced. To keep your vehicle shifting smoothly, give your transmission the attention it needs!

Stay and Play

San Diego, California

I like San Diego because you can have any type of vacation there—relax by the beach, stop over before or after a cruise, go on active adventures, enjoy the food and culture—you name it. It is easy to get around, even without a car, and there is always more to come back and see on another trip.

What do I like to do in San Diego? Well, there are many different areas and neighborhoods worth exploring, but I do have a few favorites. One of them is the Intercontinental San Diego, right on the waterfront. Have your travel agent book a room on the Club Floor, which gives you access to their Club Lounge for breakfast, snacks, drinks, and tapas in the evening. Then just walk out the hotel doors to the waterfront path, where you can catch a boat to go whale-watching or take a sunset cruise. The weekends bring out the sellers with their interesting wares. You can also check out the fresh fish, just brought in along the pier, all while hearing the barks of the sea lions below. Make your way over to Seaport Village to peruse the shops and have a snack while you debate whether to go on that bus/boat tour (you will see what I mean when you see it in person).

San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood is the best spot for a foodie tour. Little Italy Tours does a fantastic job showing you delicious and authentic spots, some of which you would never find on your own, along with teaching you about the history of the area. I have the stops all pinned on my Google maps so I can return again. There are also interesting shops in the area, so you can easily spend another hour or two just exploring after the tour.

You cannot visit California without going to the beach! Take a drive up the coast and stop at Mission Beach, La Jolla, Solana Beach, or—my personal favorite—Encinitas, just to name a few. The laid-back vibe will really help you relax and enjoy the fresh air and nature. At low tide, there are some great tide pools that could keep you busy for hours.

I also like to stop and watch the hang gliders running off the cliffside in Torrey Pines. Something about watching them effortlessly gliding around is somehow both relaxing and thrilling. There is a little shop that sells snacks and coffees to enjoy while you either sit and watch or hike the nearby trails. Gorgeous views! Black’s Beach, which is right below the bluffs, is the only nude beach I have ever heard of in California, but I have yet to see anyone there from above! Torrey Pines is also known for their famous golf course. Of course, San Diego has 75 other golf courses to choose from, so you can take your pick and enjoy a day on the greens. Another regular stop is the Birch Aquarium in the Scripps area, great for all ages.

You cannot visit California without going to the beach! Take a drive up the coast and stop at Mission Beach, La Jolla, Solana Beach, or—my personal favorite— Encinitas, just to name a few.

After a long day of touring around, I can imagine you would like to have a drink or two. Did you know that San Diego has 199 craft breweries? Sounds like you should book a beer tour! Try a different one each time to find your new favorites and find a local beer to pair with what are sure to be your new favorite tacos. End the night by stopping at the Ghirardelli shop downtown for a delicious hot fudge sundae and sea salt caramel hot cocoa. I have also stayed at the nearby US Grant, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Diego, and I will definitely go back. I was impressed by the mock turtle soup at the Grant Grille. Yes, there is a story about that, and you will have to go there yourself to learn more!

There is so much else you can do on a trip to this wonderful city. If you like to walk, I recommend checking out the seven bridges of San Diego. The zoo is the best in the world! Legoland is impressive, too, especially for adults. Being able to just cross the border into Tijuana or Ensenada is really cool. I will have to tell you about their wine country another time. Other plans I have for myself on a return trip include birding, exploring gemstone mines, and playing some of those golf courses. Just riding my bike along the beach bike paths is worth a trip. See what meets your fancy on your next trip to sunny San Diego!

Spice Up Your Dining

Spezia Offers a Special Experience

According to Wendy Becker, Spezia’s Front of the House Manager and Event Coordinator, the secret to the restaurant’s success is that people fall in love with the experience. “We pride ourselves in providing our customers a vibrant and diverse environment, excellent food, and impeccable service,” Wendy says. “Many of our customers become regulars and consider our restaurant their home away from home.”

Just ask patron Laurie Kemp about Spezia! She will be happy to tell you about her favorite restaurant. “My husband and I started going there in the mid-2000s. Now that we are

retired, we might eat there twice a week,” Laurie notes. “The food is excellent, the staff friendly, and the atmosphere is great fun.”

Dave and Rick Thompson, who had a similar restaurant in Sioux Falls, established Spezia in 2004. Dave gave the restaurant its unique name after looking at a map of Italy.

AHA - Story.indd 1 3/9/22 3:22 PM
The Roman playwright Platus once said, “Spice a dish with love, and it pleases every palate.”He might have been talking about Spezia, an Italian, steak, and seafood restaurant located at 3125 South 72nd Street.“Spezia”means“spice”in Italian, and the staff at Spezia practice the sentiment of that saying every day.
54 January 2023 Out & About
Brian Reilly, Owner, Executive Chef and Operating Partner

“A beautiful seaside village called La Spezia caught my eye,” Dave recalls. “I knew that spezia meant spice, and I thought it would represent us well.”

Spezia currently employs 60 staff members. Wendy manages the wait staff, hosts, and bartenders. Brian Reilly, the Owner, Executive Chef, and Operating Partner, manages the kitchen personnel and sets the menu. According to Laurie, the restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine.

“I can’t say enough about Wendy and her staff...they are the best. My husband and I go out to eat a great deal, and I am fascinated by the work behind the scenes. Wendy is able to juggle so many balls at once, and that effort is quite evident each time we come to Spezia,” Laurie shares.

Wendy credits the restaurant’s success to the staff and their commitment to their customers. “We are like family. You surround yourself with good people, and your product speaks for itself,” Wendy says. “I would put our service staff up against any restaurant in Omaha. Many of our personnel have been here for more than 10 years, which is unheard of in the restaurant industry.”

Wendy started in the industry at the age of 16, working at the Bishop’s Cafeteria. She came to Spezia in 2014 after being a customer of the restaurant for many years. “I enjoy my job,” she says. “In the restaurant industry, you receive instant gratification for a task well done. You get to see the benefit of your work on a daily basis, and that genuinely makes me happy.”

Wendy receives email messages and spontaneous remarks from customers raving about not only the service but also the food. All the steaks at Spezia are hand-cut in house, are aged a minimum of 21 days, and are prepared on a wood-fired grill. “I

have never had a bad meal at Spezia,” Laurie comments. “The food is excellent! My favorite dish is grilled salmon.”

When asked about unique dishes, Wendy is quick to mention a favorite dessert. “Chef Brian personally creates our high-demand signature Tiramisu dessert by hand. The process is quite time-consuming and requires a lot of attention to detail.” Wendy says. “The customers can’t get enough of it!”

Spezia is open daily for lunch and dinner. In addition to regular dining, Spezia caters special events and has two party rooms as well as patio seating. May is a very busy time of year, with Mother’s Day, graduations, rehearsal dinners, bridal and baby showers, and more. Event bookings are often made a year in advance.

Laurie has held many family events at the restaurant, but the celebration of life for her mother, Betty Tangdall, has a special place in her heart. “It was a sad and stressful time in my life when my mother passed last fall,” she recalls. “The family was planning for more than 120 people to gather at the restaurant to celebrate her life. As you can imagine, I was distracted and emotional. Wendy took the stress off my shoulders and the event was perfect. My mom would have loved it!”

The restaurant’s website at speziarestaurant.com includes the menu, event booking details, and contact information.

For reservations, you can reach the Spezia staff by phone at 402-391-2950. Spezia is open for lunch daily from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For dinner, they open again at 4:00 p.m., and they stay open until 9:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, until 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Resolved to Lose Weight? A Better Resolution Than Weight Loss

or week, or day, thinking, “This time, I’m going to do it. I’m going to lose weight and get healthy!”The sheer number of times we’ve done this just goes to show that attaining this goal is much harder than setting it. We hear about someone who completed their first marathon in their 50s and think,“Wow! I would love to do that.”But would we? Really? I don’t know about you, but the thought of getting up at 5:00 in the morning to train for a marathon does not sound fun.

There’s good news for those of us who are neither runners nor morning people: You don’t have to be able to run a marathon to be healthy. We don’t have to get up before dawn. Actually, a good night’s sleep is an important aspect of good health. So is a positive mindset, self-care, healthy relationships, and work-life balance. Taking care of our health starts with proper nutrition and exercise and leads to many more benefits than just a lower number on the scale.

That said, maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall wellness. Being underweight can lead to malnutrition, which causes osteoporosis, a compromised immune system, decreased muscle strength, and more. Obesity, on the other hand, can cause diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems, certain cancers, and other diseases.

What is a healthy weight? The CDC considers a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9 to be a healthy weight. You can calculate your BMI by dividing your weight by your height squared, then multiplying by 703 (or find a BMI calculator online). While this is a helpful guide, it isn’t a perfect approach. Athletes, for example, may have a BMI outside the healthy range and still be in prime physical condition. Your doctor is your best source for knowing if you are in a healthy weight range.

When trying to lose weight, many people go from one intensive diet to another and never find one they can stick with. To maintain a healthy weight, a diet must be sustainable. A nutritionist can be the perfect resource.

Dietitians and certified nutritionists are experts in healthy eating. They help their clients find a balance between their lifestyle and proper nutrition. In other words, they develop sustainable diets for their clients. Dietitians and nutritionists understand how diseases are affected by nutrition and counsel their patients on appropriate foods to help with heart conditions, diabetes, and many other health issues. You can find qualified experts through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at eatright.org.

A proper diet gives your body the nutrients it needs to prevent disease. It improves your energy, your mood, and your productivity. The same is true for exercise. Doing some type of physical activity every day improves the health of your brain, bones, and muscles.

As with diet, sustainability is the key to successful exercise. The type of fitness tools you choose aren’t as important as how regularly you put them to work. For some people, home gyms are the most convenient option. Others need the accountability or social activity they get from a fitness center. Consistency is the goal, whether your exercise routine is a daily walk in your neighborhood or an hour in a spinning class.

We hear a lot of talk about how goals need to be measurable, but they also need to be realistic. For example, a goal to lose 20 pounds in a month is certainly measurable, but it’s not going to happen. A healthy, realistic, measurable weight loss goal is one to two pounds per week. To do this, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 more calories than you consume daily. There are plenty of apps to track calories consumed in a day, though it can be time-consuming to enter all the data.

Try making a resolution about healthy choices. Focus on choosing lean protein and fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables instead of processed foods and those high in sugar and fat. Try drinking more water and less caffeine and getting some form of exercise every day.

Exercise relieves stress. Taking care of ourselves boosts our confidence. Mental clarity, energy, and performance levels are heightened with proper diet and exercise. When we feel better, we can do more of the activities that bring us joy. This should be our resolution—being healthy enough to do what brings us joy. Health isn’t just about the number on the scale. It is about having a higher quality of life because we feel good about ourselves.

Custom Cabinetry

Personalize Your Storage

You may be wondering if custom cabinets are really necessary. After all, custom cabinetry is not automatically “better” than pre-fabricated cabinetry. What makes custom cabinets worth the effort and price is in how you can take advantage of the materials and customization, squeezing every spare inch of storage and convenience from your home.

As you may have surmised, custom cabinetry is built entirely on site in your home (as opposed to being completely or partially built by a manufacturer beforehand). That means your cabinets can be completely personalized to your taste and your space. You can maximize your storage in a way that most stock cabinets simply don’t allow. Other benefits of customization can be ease of access for exceptionally tall or short individuals, using more eco-friendly materials, and, of course, having the higher quality of craftsmanship that comes with something that isn’t mass-produced.

Experts in creating exciting outdoor living spaces Decks

Custom cabinets aren’t just for your kitchen, though! Having custom cabinetry or shelving can bring storage or display space in any room to a whole new level. Laundry rooms are a great example of a room that can benefit from custom cabinets. From features like countertops for folding clothes to hooks for hanging items to drawers for towel and linen storage, there’s no limit to the benefits of personalized laundry storage!

Your garage is another room that could greatly benefit from custom storage and shelving. Whether your garage is doubling as a workshop, a gym, or just a place to store all the kids’ outdoor playthings, cabinets that are designed for your specific stuff would really come in handy!

A less obvious candidate for custom cabinets is your living room. Finding an entertainment center that can house all of your electronics, movies, books, devices, and décor can be cumbersome. Why not build custom shelving and cabinetry into

It’s inevitable that we spend more time in the kitchen during the last couple of months of the year, doing all the holiday cooking and baking. After all that extra time in the hardest-working room in the house, you’ve probably got a growing list of things that need improvement. The problem is knowing where to start! the wall to fit everything perfectly?

The closet is definitely a space that can benefit from custom cabinetry. High-end custom closets have been on the rise for the last decade, and they’re not getting less popular any time soon. Not everyone likes to just hang all their clothes on a single rod. Adding custom cabinets and drawers for storing folded clothes, shoes, and any number of other accessories is amazingly convenient.

Some walk-in closets don’t just stop at storage. Luxury closets can act as your one-stop-shop for getting ready in the morning, with built-in dresser, mirror, vanity, seating, hampers, and custom lighting to bring it all together.

Going with completely customized cabinetry allows for a wider variety of building materials to be used. Wood is still the perennial favorite, but there are a number of options to choose from. The most commonly used are solid wood, plywood, MDF, and particleboard.

Solid wood is a durable though expensive option. It has the benefit of coming in many different natural colors and patterns, as well as being easy to repair. Plywood is another durable option and is slightly cheaper than solid wood. It can be purchased in a variety of grades, with lower grades having more color inconsistency and less quality. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is less durable but much cheaper than plywood and solid wood. It’s easy to paint, but it is porous and can be damaged by moisture if not properly sealed. Particleboard is the cheapest option, but it’s also by far the flimsiest.

Last, but not least, is cabinet hardware. Being able to choose your cabinet materials isn’t the only way to personalize your cabinets! Brushed or polished brass, satin or matte black, and copper have been trending lately, as have modern and elongated pulls in any material. The minimalist, no-hardware look is also making a comeback. Even if you don’t want to go with current trends, there are still a lot of unique hardware options out there to make your cabinets reflect your personal style.

Regardless of what materials and hardware you prefer or what room you want to customize, having custom-built cabinetry is a great way to keep your house neater, more organized, and in line with your personal aesthetic!

Financial Fitness Get Your Finances in Shape

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle promotes

quality of life, both physically and mentally. Have you ever considered whether or not you are financially fit? According to Forbes, only 20 percent of Americans consider themselves to be“highly disciplined”financial planners. Are you in that 20 percent? Statistically, you probably are not.

If you want to get on the road to financial fitness, asking yourself a few questions is an excellent place to start. How do you go about evaluating your financial situation? Do you have a vision of your desired lifestyle? How much money is needed to support that lifestyle? Do you have a budget? Are you disciplined when it comes to saving and spending money? Are you saving for retirement? Are you comfortable with your financial outlook? Settings goals, reviewing financial resources, and planning for retirement will help provide a secure financial future.

Identify short-term and long-term goals and prioritize them to clarify financial requirements. Retirement should be a top priority during this process. The Social Security Administration reports that Social Security income will replace about 40 percent of the average worker’s annual pre-retirement savings. This means that savings and investments are essential components of a successful financial plan.

investments. Factor in adjustments for inflation. All of these items are essential considerations for a comfortable retirement.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. A financial planner can assist with specific issues or help create a financial plan to meet your goals. These knowledgeable individuals can also help with saving for college, tax planning, insurance, retirement planning, and estate planning.

A plan also provides confidence and peace of mind for the future, which means a better quality of life for you and your family.

After establishing goals, review your financial resources to calculate your net worth. These resources impact the ability to reach and protect financial goals. Add up all assets, including cash, checking and savings accounts, and the value of your home. Also include the current value of investments such as stocks, retirement accounts, IRAs, certificates of deposit, and real estate. Next, add up liabilities such as home mortgages, auto loans, credit card debt, student loans, taxes due on investment profits taken, and other outstanding bills. Net worth is the total value of assets minus liabilities. The goal is to have a positive net worth that increases every year to help meet financial needs during retirement.

How much money is needed for retirement depends upon several factors. What is your desired lifestyle? Do you envision an active retirement that includes traveling, or are you looking forward to a modest, quiet retirement? According to the U.S. Department of Labor, males retiring at age 65 live approximately 19 years, and females live about 21 years. (These are averages, and overall health and family history must of course be considered.) Identify sources of income, including social security and retirement benefits, as well as funds already saved for retirement. Calculate the estimated annual rate of return on

When selecting a financial planner, several items should be considered. What are the planner’s educational background and experience? Look for credentials such as certified financial planner (CFP), certified public accountant (CPA), or chartered financial analyst (CFA). If the financial planner is accredited, you can research their history for any disciplinary actions. Ask if the planner is a fiduciary. This is important because a fiduciary is required by law to act in your best interest, not theirs. How are they paid? Fee types include commissions, percentage of assets managed, hourly fees, or annual retainers. Ask about the planner’s typical clientele, and request references. You want to select someone who is experienced in dealing with financial situations similar to yours.

Another part of becoming fit financially is shopping wisely. January is a good time to find deals in several areas. Check out great discounts on exercise equipment and gym memberships. White sales provide great deals on linens. Furniture and carpet stores offer sale pricing to attract customers after the holiday season and make room for new inventory. Black Friday is known for super deals on electronics, but stores also put televisions on sale in January to make room for newer models and to tempt Super Bowl fans to upgrade their flat screens. January is an excellent time to take advantage of post-holiday sales to stock up on items like wrapping paper, holiday cards, and decorations. Every little bit of savvy shopping allows you to save more money for your nest egg.

Caretaker or Caregiver? Giving Care Versus Taking It

Are you a caretaker or a caregiver…and what’s the difference?

As moms, daughters, sisters, friends, and wives, we all face many situations in which we know our help is needed. Aging parents, sick children or grandchildren, a friend in crisis…we’ve all been there. How we manage these situations will determine how we emerge from the challenge.

“Relationships based on obligation lack dignity.” —Wayne Dyer

How do you feel about the person who needs your care? If you find yourself depressed, anxious, and overwhelmed, you most likely are behaving as a caretaker. So many of us jump right in when care is needed, many times without even being asked. We take charge because we know we are the only one who knows best. We worry. We care. We love. We ignore our own self-care because we believe it would be selfish to focus on ourselves.

“It is not the load that breaks you down. It’s the way you carry it.” —Lena Horne

I realized several months back that I was a caretaker, not a caregiver. My entire life, I had done what I thought was the right thing… always being there, controlling the entire situation, taking charge. I thrived in a crisis! Because of this, I would find myself exhausted,

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:

“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!

The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!” —Debra

resentful, and just not very happy. Does that sound familiar? If so, what can we do? How do we change?

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” —Oprah Winfrey

We first must take a serious look at how we are acting, thinking, and feeling. Caretaking is best described as a control issue, whereas caregiving is an expression of kindness and love. Caretaking feels stressful, exhausting, and frustrating. Though caregiving can also be tiring, caregiving feels right; it feels like love. Pay attention: How do you feel?

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

—Helen Keller

Changing from behaving as a caretaker to a caregiver is definitely possible. Ask yourself how you feel when you are with the person you are caring for. After an interaction, reflect on whether you respectfully waited to be asked to do something or you simply marched in and took charge. How was your vibe…dramatic or calm? Changing from a caretaker to a caregiver will give you an incredible sense of relief. It takes practice. It takes a decision, and it takes listening to your heart. But it is so worth it…for you and for the person you love.

“…pain in my legs to the point that it hurt to walk… immediately after the treatment I showed some improvement. Later in the evening, the pain was reduced by 75%. When I woke up in the morning, I had no pain of any kind.”
