Baby, It’s Cold Outside! Happy Valentine’s Day to all! What a wonderful way to break up the time between Christmas and the beginning of spring. The cold weather has started to wear on us, and this holiday of love is just what we need. As I write this, my husband, Manny, is packing to go ice fishing with my brother Tom. To be blunt: I really don’t get it. I can’t stand the cold…especially the ICE cold! Yes, I know, I’ve lived here my whole life and should have gotten into the fun of snow and cold. Never happened. Why anyone would choose to go up north, drill a hole, and fish through the ice is beyond me, but they love it. Tom explains that it allows him to totally focus on just that one thing—the fish. Manny is a newbie, but he is truly excited about going. They are going to have some perfect weather this week, with temperatures in the 40s. The ice is 16 inches thick, so they will be able to drive onto the lake. I hope they have a fantastic time and come back with lots of perch and walleye. Me? I’ll stay put in our house, turn the fireplace on, and just chill. I admit that I will definitely miss Manny. He says he will miss me, as well. Our nights are typically spent sitting by the fire, sharing our experiences of the day. Knowing us, we’ll most likely call each other to do the same thing long distance. The being who will have the most difficulty with Manny being gone is Jack, our cat. I say “our” cat, but the truth is that Jack absolutely loves Manny. I have never seen a cat be as affectionate to a person as Jack is to Manny. I think part of it is that Manny talks to him…all the time. Manny talks to Jack like he’s talking to a human. I think Jack appreciates the respect! Jack showed up in our lives in February of 2017. Somehow, he was able to crawl up into my car engine. He weighed only a pound. Now he’s a big guy, about 18 pounds. Back then, I debated about whether to keep him or not…that decision took me about three minutes. I really have no idea where he came from, but he has brought lots of joy and laughter into our lives. When Manny heads out of town for a few days, Jack will reluctantly come and sleep with me. He will reluctantly let me pet him, but I know where his heart really is! Have a great February and Valentine’s Day. Hey—next month, it’ll be spring! Yippee!

Cut biscuits with a biscuit cutter and arrange on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 10–15 minutes, until golden. Serve with warm honey, jam, or sausage gravy. Creamy Ham and Eggs Brunch Chop up 4 peeled hard boiled eggs and set aside. In a saucepan, melt 4 Tablespoons of butter and add 4 Tablespoons of milk. Stir for 3 minutes. Layer in 1 cup of cooked white or wild rice, half of the sour cream mixture, 1–2 cups of cooked and chopped chicken, and 2/3 cup of grated Monterey Jack cheese. Repeat layers. Add some chopped onion, if desired. Top with 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees until bubbly. Beer Cheese Soup for a Group In a soup pot, combine 4 cups of chicken broth, 1 and 1/2 cups of peeled and diced potatoes, 1 cup of sliced carrots, 1/2 cup of chopped green pepper, and 1/4 cup of chopped onion. (If desired, add 1 cup of other frozen veggies). Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes. Add 1 jar (16 ounces) of pasteurized cheese spread (like Cheez Whiz), 2 cans of condensed cream of chicken soup, and 1 cup of beer. Simmer gently for 10 minutes, stirring often—do not boil. Serve with croutons. Superbowl Party Meatballs Mix together 1 can of cranberry sauce and 1/2 cup of grape jelly. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir well. Place prepared and pre-cooked meatballs in a slow cooker or baking dish. Spoon 1 cup of canned (drained) sauerkraut over the meatballs. Add 1/2 cup of sliced onion and the cranberry mixture. Pour 1–2 bottles of chili sauce over the mixture. Stir to coat. Cook on high for 3 hours in the slow cooker or in the oven at 350 degrees (covered) for 1 hour. Stir several times during cooking. Easy Presidents Day Pie Beat 2 packages (16 ounces each) of softened cream cheese

with 1/2 cup of sugar. Add 2 eggs and mix for 8–10 minutes. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Pour into a prepared 9-inch graham cracker pie crust (or a pre-baked pie shell). Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool. Mix 1 can of cherry pie filling with 1/2 teaspoon of almond flavoring. Pour the cherry mixture over the pie. Chill and serve. Snowy Day Lemonade Cookies Cream 1 cup of butter with 1 cup of sugar. Add 2 eggs and mix well. Combine 3 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture, along with 3 ounces of thawed lemonade concentrate (half of a small can). Drop by teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 12–15 minutes. Brush the tops of the cookies with the rest of the lemonade. Let cool. Roll in powdered sugar. Chocolate Heart Cookies Mix 3 sticks of soft butter with 1 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1 teaspoon of almond extract. Mix together 3 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1/3 teaspoon of salt, and 1 cup of toasted chopped pecans (optional). Add the dry ingredients to the butter ingredients. When the dough starts to come together, turn out onto a dusted counter and shape into a flat disc. Wrap and chill for 15–30 minutes. Roll the dough out to 1/2 inch thick and cut into hearts. Place cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the edges start to brown. When cool, dip one side of each cookie in melted chocolate. (Melt 1/2 cup of chocolate chips with 1 teaspoon of shortening in 30-second bursts; stir until melted). Place on racks to dry.

Spring Vibes Awaken the Senses!

By Holly Bell

Spring is just around the corner, and this year’s designer creations will make us want to indulge! Basics and throwbacks influence all fashion, but this spring is full of special effects that reflect the past, the present, and the future. One of my all-time favorite stand-by looks for spring is black and white. This contrasting combination is classic, but don’t think of it as basic. This year, black and white is done up in oversized prints, stripes, polka dots, and animal prints. Add a splash of bright color to make it totally 2022! An oversized red bag, purple shoes, or a colorful scarf takes black and white to a fresh new level. The look is playful, bold, and head-turning! If you’ve lived in the Midwest for any length of time, you already know that you can never have too many jackets! There are two basic looks for 2022: big and oversized or boxy and cropped. Nothing is as uncomfortable as a too-tight top, so why not go big or go home? Leave yourself room to be comfortable—and room to layer. Blazers find their power in pure volume. On the opposite side of the metric, cropped shorty jackets are flattering, as they visually extend your legs for a great proportion. This taller, slimmer look is particularly prized by petite women but flatters women of all sizes. The best plan is to have both types of blazer in your closet so you can choose a style based on your mood! The past couple of years have seen many changes in our options for dressing, but none has created a greater impact than leisurewear. Athletic gear has found its way into being a mainstay for everyday dressing. Ladies have really committed to this look and will find gorgeous matching pants, tops, and jackets to suit their needs at the gym and beyond. Creative fashionistas can mix and match them with their sportswear for a modern take on dressing.

One leisurewear idea is to pair a yoga top with the new trouser look. Big, wide legs with pleats rule the spring runways. I am a firm believer that an oversized piece needs to be paired with a slim opposite piece. Pair wide, loose pants with a new cropped jacket for a hip look. Oversized tops are also popular but must be worn with a slim pant or even belted or half tucked to avoid a look that has too much volume. Another multi-dimensional trend for 2022 is the modified hippie look. From flared pants to crochet, boho fun will be a big influence on fashion this spring. Some looks are downright crafty, with fringe, braided belts, and custom details. New weaving techniques and fabrics keep this retro look forward-facing. Another trend that I love is the all-white look. Introduced last year and gaining popularity, that fresh all-white monochrome will carry forward. There is nothing more elegant than head-to-toe white! What about color for 2022? What will we see and love? The Pantone Institute predicts that the color we will love this year is Veri Peri! This medium-toned mix of blue and purple is already one of my favorites. It’s not quite pastel but is 10

and your surroundings at…

definitely not a bright combination, either. It’s a color that will look great on women and men alike—a great contrast for a brunette but delicate enough for blonde, gray, or platinum hair. Pantone says that Very Peri “displays a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit. Very Peri helps us to embrace our altered landscape.” As always, don’t forget the accessories when you’re putting an outfit together. I recommend a great watch. A basic gold or silver watch with a large face looks important. You can’t go wrong with a couple of simple necklaces. A single strand with a pearl will always work with everything. Add another longer chain with an interesting pendant for an eye-catching combo. As always, a tasteful, diamond stud earring goes with everything. To top off your accessories, you need a great tote bag in a solid color. It needs to be large enough to carry all your essentials but not so big as to look like you’re spending the night. Make it a fun color to add a little personality to your wardrobe! It’s time to start dreaming about sunshine, warm breezes, and the days when we don’t have to wear a heavy coat. Get your closet ready for spring! Start pairing colors you have never worn together before. Add a few spring trends and you are on your way to a summer day, or at least a spring day— we’ll be talking about summer wardrobes soon enough!

A Woman’s Work

What Women Want

Keeping the Spark Alive All Year Long By Sharon Knierim

February 14th rolls around every year, and lots and lots of people begin to scramble for that perfect Valentine gift idea. What will it be this year? What was the big gift last year that swept her off her feet? Fellas, do you remember if you sent flowers to her office or presented her with a huge bouquet of red roses in person? Among all the turmoil and chaos of modern life, it is really easy to forget something that happened at least 365 days ago. This is true for even the most organized and system-driven of people. We should really write these things down. Does our forgetfulness mean that love and the expressions of love are not important? It does not mean that at all. Ladies, do you recall past Valentine’s Day gifts? As time passes, some events seem to blend into each other. Of course, nobody can forget the big glitzy gifts of diamonds or beautiful and meaningful jewelry. A five-pound box of chocolates is also memorable. The year my husband surprised me with a new car was unforgettable. I don’t remember the actual year, but the fact that there was a brand-new automobile parked in the garage was a stunner. Of course, he accomplished at least two goals with that new car. It was always his habit to buy a new car

around Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or my birthday—to impress his motherin-law and my sisters. Even if she is head over heels in love, no gal in her right mind expects a new car in her garage every February or a new diamond ring as an annual testament of her man’s undying love. These things are nice, but, in our heart of hearts, it’s the little things that really count. It’s those thoughtful touches that really melt our hearts. Listen up, guys: Kindness and thoughtfulness go a long way, and they can be practiced all year long without putting yourself into an emotional bind or a really long checkout line. Also, of course, it’s cheaper!

What do women want? A lot has been said during the past couple of decades about men not being able to understand women, but not all of us subscribe to that school of thought. When we build relationships, it’s a natural pathway to learn as much about that special person as possible. Relationships are about sharing ourselves with each other. It’s kind of a trade-off. Revealing your inner self to that special loved one is a surefire way to learn about her. What little things does she treasure? Does she have any pet peeves you could avoid? When we were young and newly married, my husband used to accompany me to the supermarket. Often, he would take me in his arms and we would dance to the music from the overhead speakers. What fun! Suddenly, the entire store aisle seemed like our own personal ballroom. Not romantic enough for you? Give it a try. You might like it. Women, like everyone else, enjoy those “little things” that keep the spark alive in both friendships and their very special relationship. The worst crime in relationships might be letting love become boring or routine. We love surprises and the feeling of being important and valued. Here’s some advice for the guys: treat your lady to an off-the-wall bolt out of the blue. It’s the cute things or the thoughtful, unexpected moments that are the true treasures of love. That’s what keeps that spark kindled. Something that couples often find helpful is remembering that “if you want to keep love, don’t keep track.” This is true. Love is not a game or a years-long series of trading favors or nice gestures. For most of us, love just settles down over time, and the giving and accepting of it become natural. When we talk about relationship maintenance, there’s a reason that we say “keep the spark alive” instead of “keep a huge fire roaring.” Sure, the infatuation and fervor of new love are lots of fun, and we wouldn’t miss that wild roar for the world. But as things eventually calm down, there’s an even better kind of love waiting. This is the kind of love that survives everyday living. This is the love that is made up of kindness, understanding, and patience. Women want a sustaining kind of love that is lasting and joyful. If you remember to keep the spark of love alive all year long with small and thoughtful gestures, there will be no need to buy a new car every February. Have a happy Valentine’s Day!

BodyWise Therapy

Return to Health and Mobility

By Janette Calabro

Your health and wellness are the top priorities at BodyWise Therapy, P.C. Physical therapist Shanna Paopao combines traditional physical therapy with myofascial release for individualized treatment of pain or loss of mobility. Whether your pain stems from stress, bad posture, a medical condition, or an injury, Shanna can help you get back to the activities that you enjoy. If you’ve never heard of myofascial release, you’re not alone. Sometimes, people think it’s massage, Shanna notes, but it is a more specific treatment technique. What exactly is myofascial release? Let’s start with the meaning of fascia. Your body contains a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle. Your fascia has nerves that are sometimes as sensitive as skin. When they’re stressed or injured, they tighten up, causing pain, limited motion, and other symptoms. “Fascia is connective tissue everywhere in the body. It surrounds vessels, nerves, organs; it surrounds our brain, and our spinal cord; it’s continuous with the nerves that branch off the spine,” Shanna explains. “It’s like this web throughout the body, and it’s incredibly strong. It tightens from overuse, a major injury, poor posture, stress—whatever it may be.” When clients come to BodyWise Therapy, Shanna first listens as they relate the location and nature of their pain or restriction. Shanna watches for the texture of tissue in clients, what is painful in the body, neck, or head, and where someone feels restricted in movement. “I look at posture and range of motion, and sometimes I do other tests. I might assess someone’s gait. I might do a little bit of balance testing.” All of this information helps Shanna create a plan that is specific for each client. “I am a physical therapist, and I have worked in many different settings,” says Shanna. “Myofascial release is just one of many treatment options that a physical therapist can do.” Many clients are good candidates for myofascial release. “There are a few precautions and contraindications,” Shanna notes, “but nearly any living, breathing person can undergo myofascial release.” How does it feel? “Myofascial release is very gentle. It’s gentle, sustained pressure or compression into the tissues, or it’s a sustained stretch. After some time (it’s different for everyone), the tissues will start to give a little bit. You release different barriers, and you wait for each barrier.” Shanna believes in the value of a collaboration of professionals, such as your medical doctor and other healthcare and wellness pros. However, if other professionals say that they can’t find anything wrong, or that 18

February 2022

the symptoms are “all in your head,” Shanna wants to examine further. “If anyone ever told me it was all in my head, I would have said, Shanna Poapao, PT, Owner ‘You know what? Some of it is in my head. There’s fascia in my head. Some of it is in my head, but it’s not my imagination.’” Never judgmental about her client’s symptoms, Shanna encourages the truth and then moves forward with skill and professionalism. Her goals are to help decrease pain and improve mobility. Although she can’t, for example, cure arthritis, she can work the tissues around an arthritic joint for better movement and less pain. Each client’s response to myofascial release is different, but Shanna notes that most people are more relaxed after treatment. They tend to sleep better and venture toward freedom of movement and freedom from pain. Results vary from person to person. “It could be decreased pain,” says Shanna. “It could be improved movement. Some people say their mind works better or they think more clearly. It can improve digestion. There are a lot of different things you can improve, just about anywhere on the body.” Shanna works with children who have suffered an injury or have other mobility and pain challenges. If she can improve an issue before it becomes a chronic problem, she considers her job done well. She devotes her practice to all those who need help. Shanna’s advice to keep fascia healthy is to stay ahead of it. “It’s important to keep moving,” she advises. “Movement is important within the movement that you can successfully do. Everyone has a different level of activity that’s good for them. Stay active within the activity that you can tolerate, which may not be much for some people—for others, it may be marathons. Start where you are, and take your time.” If your fascia has fallen off track, Shanna can help you get moving again. To start your healing process, send a message to shanna@bodywiseomaha.com or call Shanna at 402-932-8686. BodyWise Therapy is located at 2504 South 119th Street, in Omaha.

Heart Health for Women

A Healthy Heart is a Happy Heart!

By Janette Calabro

In the United States, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women over age 40, especially after menopause, causing about one in three deaths per year. If you break down those statistics, it equals close to one woman every minute. Women aged 65 years and older are at greater risk than younger adults to develop cardiovascular disease. These statistics are alarming! Let’s pay some attention to the causes of heart disease in women, how women’s symptoms differ from men’s, and what the best treatments are. Heart disease risk varies by race, ethnicity, even education women can also include numbness, coldness in legs or arms, and annual income. you. Regular exercise can reduce blood pressure, lower the risk of diabetes, and help maintain a healthy body weight. That means that exercise reduces several risk factors for heart disease. The consensus is to exercise (walking counts!) three times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. Better yet, build up to 45 minutes four to six times a week. Remember, cardio plus strength training provides a nice balance, replacing fat with muscle—another plus for reducing heart disease. Exercise also relieves stress. Yoga relaxes the body and mind, easing emotional stress that can wreak havoc on the body. In this way, yoga helps lower blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, and heart rate. The gentle movements of tai chi are also great stress relievers that keep your body in motion. Your heart disease prevention strategy should also include a cardiovascular screening to measure risk based on your family history. If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, talk with your doctor about options to control and reduce them. Don’t forget dental checkups! Poor dental health means that germs can enter your bloodstream and travel to your heart. Your physician will check family history, review your symptoms, and perform a physical exam to check for common risk factors. They’ll check for fluid buildup or congestion, heart murmurs, and artery disease. After the exam, your doc may order blood tests, chest x-rays to see the condition of your lungs and heart, or an electrocardiogram (ECG), which measures the electrical signals in your heart. An ECG uses sound waves to produce images of the heart in motion. Your heart’s size, structure, and valves show how efficiently blood flows through. Don’t be surprised if you’re

Members MD.indd 1

asked to complete a stress test to measure how your heart holds up while walking a treadmill. Imaging tests like a cardiac computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help your cardiologist make an assessment. Some cases call for a coronary angiogram. With this test, a thin tube or catheter is inserted into a blood vessel, often in the groin, and guided to the heart’s arteries. This test helps find blockages. A myocardial biopsy is another potential test, during which the doctor inserts a small cord into a blood vessel to obtain a tiny sample of heart muscle for examination. Doctors can often correct heart failure with a little help from you in lifelong management. Hearts can become stronger. Medications include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors that relax the blood vessels. This, in turn, lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. There are also receptor blockers that work as inhibitors. Beta blockers can be prescribed to slow heart rate and reduce blood pressure. Diuretics or water pills keep fluid from collecting in the body and reduce fluid in the lungs for easier breathing. The newest medicine for chronic heart failure is a pill taken daily by mouth to reduce hospital stays for those at higher risk. Surgeries such as bypass and heart valve repair are common today, and the science keeps getting better. There is hope for better heart health, and many committed groups and individuals will help us support our goals. Cardiologists, fitness experts, nutritionists, dieticians, and support groups are there to help us maintain a healthy, happy heart. Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Out and About

Erin Eliz Strunk

Integrity and Artistry in Real Estate

By Maria Harding

Erin Eliz Strunk feels that anything worth doing is worth bringing to its full potential. Erin is a board-certified Realtor® with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate and an interior designer holding an Allied membership with ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). She uses her talents and her unwavering character to make every client’s experience selling or buying a home a positive, seamless process. Erin’s educational background is in business and marketing. On a trip to Spain during her college years, Erin was struck by the rich aesthetic found in Spanish culture, and one of her traveling companions happened to be an interior designer. As life so often dictates, that combination of inspiration and a chance meeting compelled her to pursue studies in interior design in Chicago. While honing her craft, she dabbled in real estate part time with several companies. The fluidity between interior design and real estate became immediately evident, and working for different employers in both fields allowed her to appreciate different business models. “I was able to take bits and pieces from those many experiences before practicing on my own,” Erin says. “It took a while for me to venture out because I knew the weight of what I was advising.” Erin applies her design skills to prepare and stage homes for sale. The process of paring down and redesigning allows homeowners a more gradual emotional departure from the home. “It can help clients transition from a home that maybe they’ve lived in for 35 years,” Erin says. “When you’re able to showcase a home in the best light, people are able to close the door on that chapter and feel gratitude for the time they spent in that home.” Exhibiting a home for sale takes finesse. “When I’m staging, my goal is to balance the overall finish,” says Erin. All of the senses are taken into consideration, and her work encompasses texture, color, and even correct lighting. “In our own homes, it is common that we don’t have the right wattage of bulb for a certain light fixture; we just put one in there so we can use the lamp,” she reasons. “When you are selling, however, those little components of cohesion are important.” For her clients who are looking to buy the perfect home, Erin’s artistic eye can spot real estate “diamonds in the rough.” Other agents might overlook the good bones of a dowdy home that is just in need of an update. In a Facebook review, client J.Ducie concurs, saying that Erin “has great ideas about the potential of older homes because of her design background.” Much of Erin’s online portfolio consists of designated lots for new-construction homes. Erin can confidently 24

guide buyers to design their Erin Eliz Strunk, custom dream home. “I’ve built relationRealtor-InteriorDesigner ships with contractors and builders who have been around a long time,” she says. “We enjoy the collaboration.” For many realtors, new construction is daunting, but Erin is adept at advising clients on room measurements to fit their intended purposes, traffic flow, and fixture and color selections. The current real estate climate is unusually competitive. Houses often sell—within just days—for more than the asking price. “I think now, more than ever, it is important to have professional guidance,” shares Erin, “not only to be competitive, but to be prepared.” Erin offers expert counsel so that buyers don’t extend beyond reasonable limitations when making an offer. She also considers herself a “hunter” in a city she knows well, keeping her eye on shifts in local communities and cultivating opportunities to get the jump on homes before they go on the public market. The company through which she currently works, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, is a great fit for Erin. It is an invitation-only brokerage; inclusion cultivates a like-minded culture. “We value authenticity, growth, and excellence,” Erin says. “We are relationship-based. We’re selling houses, but we’re serving people.” Erin appreciates that her colleagues support one another through inevitable hurdles and bumps to create a better experience for all agents and their clients. Erin doesn’t cut corners. She acknowledges that “purchasing a home is the largest investment we generally make in our lifetime.” She offers total transparency and negotiates in a way that fosters positive relationships within the industry. Buyers and sellers benefit on both sides of a transaction. Some realtors offer tiered services with corresponding commission percentages from which to choose. Erin offers only one level of service—one that is all-encompassing and gives clients the individual attention they need to feel totally supported throughout the experience of buying or selling a home. You can reach Erin at 402-598-1504.

Is CBD Right for What Ails You? Time to Give it a Closer Look

By Leslie Byrne

If you think you are seeing more business selling CBD, or you are reading about more ways of using CBD, you’re not alone. CBD is booming in popularity and is available everywhere from specialty shops to grocery stores. It is becoming more mainstream and readily available, with many users singing the praises of its health benefits. You may have friends or relatives who swear they feel better since they started using CBD products. Maybe it’s time to take a second look and get the facts about CBD, and see if it is right for you. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical found in the cannabis plant. It does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a high. This is probably the number one thing people do not know about CBD—it does not produce the high you would expect from marijuana. CBD comes in many forms, and the list of uses or products with CBD added continues to grow. CBD products include CBD oil, vape oil, pain-relief creams, patches, sweets like gummy bears, capsules, and various compounds. The list of drinks and beauty products with CBD as an ingredient is also getting longer. This industry is looking at earning 22 billion dollars in 2022. It has gained such popularity because of the long list of suggested health benefits to relieve a wide range of ailments. Right now, the FDA has only approved one cannabis-derived drug product: Epidiolex (cannabidiol), and three syn-

thetic cannabis-related drug products: Marinol (dronabinol), Syndros (dronabinol), and Cesamet (nabilone). These drug products are only available with a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. The CBD products you can buy over the counter are generally marketed as dietary supplements, which are not regulated by the FDA. Several animal studies, as well as research in humans, suggest that CBD may help with anxiety, insomnia (both falling asleep and staying asleep), and chronic pain, including pain caused by arthritis. Other studies are looking to see if CBD can lower cravings for tobacco, alcohol, and heroin or other opiates. Animal treats infused with CBD may also help treat anxiety in our dogs and cats. As with any supplement, side effects can occur, including nausea, fatigue, and irritability. CBD can increase the level of blood thinning medications and can affect other medicines

in the blood by competing for the liver enzymes that break down these drugs. Also, high doses of CBD may affect liver-related blood tests, so it is important to let your doctor know if you use any CBD products when you have blood work done. So, are CBD products legal? Yes, but there are still restrictions to consider. The Farm Bill of 2018 made it legal to grow hemp, a non-psychoactive form of cannabis, as a crop. All 50 states have laws legalizing CBD but each state has its own list of regulations. In Nebraska, for example, legal CBD products must be derived from hemp, not marijuana, and they can contain no more than 0.3% THC (that’s how we know they won’t produce a high). If you are ready to try a CBD product, seek out a reputable retailer and ask plenty of questions. Look for a product from an established manufacturer that tests every batch and uses a third party for the testing. Product labels should include the amount of CBD per serving, recommended dosage, CBD type, manufacturer’s name, and a full list of ingredients. If the packaging doesn’t include the product’s certificate of analysis (COA) from the testing lab, ask the retailer where to find it. The COA provides the precise concentrations in a CBD product (this sometimes differs from packaging claims). Be sure to ask the retailer about potency. Knowing what dosage to take can be a challenge, but research has shown that body size matters when it comes to CBD oil potency. Potency ranges from low-potency, mid-range, and highstrength. Regardless of your size, starting at the lowest concentration and slowly increasing the concentration is recommended for everyone. If you take medication or other supplements, understand that they may interact with CBD products. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist about possible interactions. Now that CBD products are legal (if properly sourced) and readily available at a wide variety of retailers, it’s time to take a look at this potent health aid! With the right dose and potency, you may receive some long overdue relief from issues like anxiety, joint pain, insomnia, and more. Bring your questions to your health practitioner and CBD retailer to learn more. Sources for this article included mayoclinic.org, health.harvard.edu, bbc.com, fda. gov, and cbdclinicals.com. Hard Surface Flooring

Floors That Stand the Test of Time

By Robyn V. Powell

Flooring is a central element of any interior design plan. As the foundation of a space, the right flooring choice is crucial to the success of a home’s overall design. Whether you choose contemporary, modern farmhouse, or traditional, flooring can make or break your space. When it comes to investing in flooring, top considerations are style, pricing, and quality. Let’s take a look at some flooring choices that are on trend for 2022. Flooring is one of the hardest working surfaces in a home—it is expected to stand up to daily use and to look good while doing so! It’s no surprise that naturally beautiful, comfortable, and affordable hardwood remains the number one flooring choice across every price range of home. Hardwood flooring has been around for centuries and has always been associated with elegant homes. Nothing equals the warmth and richness of a natural wood floor. A beautiful hardwood floor invites you into a room, giving you the feeling that the space is grounded in nature. The natural beauty of wood complements any interior design theme while adding character. Like all trends, hardwood flooring has evolved. Trends for 2022 are combining traditional styles with exciting new colors and species, grain patterns, and finishes that allow you to express your individual style as never before. Durable white

oak earns the top place in popularity among wood species. Its tight, smooth grain can be refinished in tones ranging from near white to black, making it highly versatile. While dark espresso and coffee tones have been dominating recent trends, designers tell us that there’s a move toward lighter flooring tones that show fewer scratches and dust. For those who want to retain the richness of darker wood, light brown is going to be great option in 2022. Hardwood floors resist dents and scratches and are easy to care for with sweeping and occasional damp mopping. Floors that have been damaged through wear and tear can be sanded and re-stained a different color by a refinishing professional, giving your floor a brand new life every 7–10 years—a perk that is not an option with any other type of flooring. Solid wood floors can be sanded multiple times over their lifetime, which spans many decades.

Investing in hardwood floors will give you an excellent return on value over any other flooring choice. Besides increasing the value of your home, wood floors will attract buyers at resale time. Homebuyers prefer hardwood floors; in some neighborhoods, they are considered a must. Depending on your home’s location and construction, you may want to consider engineered wood as an alternative to solid wood flooring. Engineered flooring was developed to overcome some of the challenges of solid wood flooring in damp spaces. Engineered wood offers all the benefits and beauty of wood floors, but it is constructed in a way that makes the wood stronger and more stable. For example, because wood and water typically don’t mix well, engineered wood is a great choice for use in damper areas such as bathrooms and basements. If you are used to thinking of concrete as a no-nonsense flooring suitable only for garages and unfinished basements, think again. Concrete is now a viable material for home interiors, where it can be polished, etched, or stained to serve as a stylish finished flooring. Concrete is not a stylistic fit for every home, but it can be an elegant and colorful surprise. A concrete floor can be a good choice if you have an existing slab foundation and a home style that is a good aesthetic fit for the polished gleam of honed concrete. Homes with an industrial or contemporary vibe pair well with concrete floors. Concrete floors are a less expensive option than hardwood, are fairly easy to maintain, and can last a very long time. Be prepared for a surface that can be slippery and is naturally cold. Vinyl and laminate flooring offer the advantages of durability, good looks, and economy. Vinyl flooring is great in high moisture areas and is easy to keep clean. Laminate flooring offers more style choices and higher resale value. Both of these flooring types can be manufactured to replicate the look of natural wood or stone tiles and can last for up to 25 years. When it comes to flooring projects, hiring the right professionals is key to reducing stress and avoiding costly mistakes. Hiring an interior designer who can provide great ideas is a great step toward making your dream home a reality. Hiring installers with expertise in the type of flooring you’ve chosen is an invaluable choice. Sources for this article included: consumerreports.org, woodfloors.org, and hgtv.com.

To Your Good Health

Venous Disease

Protect Your Vascular Health

By Loretta McCollum

Healthy veins are a critical component of a healthy body. Arteries pump blood away from the heart, while veins send blood back toward the heart. Purple, bulging veins are not just cosmetically unappealing—they may also be life-threatening. Weak or damaged veins can cripple the circulatory system, allowing blood to pool. This causes an increase in vein pressure, leading to swelling and the possibility of blood clots. Millions of Americans are dealing vein issues. The good news is that treatment options exist and that most insurance companies cover procedures that are deemed medically necessary. Symptoms of vein issues include painful, purple, swollen veins; leg numbness or heaviness; or an itchy or irritating leg rash. Hormone fluctuations make women more likely than men to develop vein disease. Being overweight is a risk factor, as is a family history of vein disease. Those who stand or sit for extended periods of time are also at risk. Spider veins, typically a cosmetic issue only, are named for their delicate, web-like appearance. They commonly appear on the face and legs. Although they’re not harmful in most cases, you should see a doctor if they become tender or swollen. Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins near the skin surface. The pooling of blood in these veins lends itself to blood clot formation. Skin ulcers may also develop near varicose veins, particularly around the ankles. These ulcers are painful and often become infected. Varicose veins close to the skin may burst, causing bleeding. Such bleeding is usually minor. However,

depending upon the size of the ruptured vein, immediate medical attention may be required. The possibility of complications is certainly a motivation to seek medical attention. Several treatments are available, from non-invasive remedies to full removal of the problem vein. Somewhere in the middle is a procedure known as sclerotherapy, in which the vein is injected with a solution that scars and closes the vein. It’s performed in the doctor’s office, and no anesthesia is used. Multiple treatments a few weeks apart may be needed. Laser therapy sends strong bursts of light into a vein, causing it to fade and eventually disappear. This treatment is effective for smaller varicose and spider veins. The heat from the laser damages the vein, and the resulting scar tissue closes the vein. Blood flow is naturally re-routed to healthier veins. More than one treatment is usually required.

Love Stories

Where Do We Learn About Love?

Ahhh…February, the month of love! I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.” —Roy Croft When my two sisters and I were all teenagers, we loved going to the movies to watch love stories on the big screen. We would go and sob our eyes out. Looking back on it, none of these movies had happy endings. Love Story. Romeo and Juliet. The Way We Were. Rather, they were stories of star-crossed lovers…death, suicide, and divorce! Yikes! “You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day, and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible.” —Bob Marley So, why did we keep torturing ourselves with these visits to the theater? I think we did it to try and figure out what the heck true love really was. Our hormones were kicking in, and we’d already had our first crushes. My oldest sister even had a boyfriend. Why in the world we thought we could learn about real love from Hollywood is beyond me.

“The first duty of love is to listen.” —Paul Tillich Since my marriage to my husband, Manny, I work every day to learn more about love. We have been married two and a half years, and we strive to make progress every day, with our own growth and with our love for one another.

“Love isn’t something natural. Rather, it requires discipline, concentration, patience, faith, and the overcoming of narcissism. It isn’t a feeling; it is a practice.” —Eric Fromm I have not learned about healthy love from Hollywood. I’m learning about healthy love with my husband. Manny and I talk with one another about our relationship every single day. Mutual respect is our goal. We want to make certain that we are not assuming what the other thinks or feels. Neither one of us is a mind reader, so we have found that it’s vital to share what we are feeling and thinking. Communication is the building block that we use to keep getting better and stronger. “Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get, only with what you are expecting to give—which is everything.” —Katharine Hepburn Giving all of ourselves to our spouse with an open heart, with the goal of growing and trusting one another, is the foundation of a true, healthy love. Love, trust, mutual respect…now, THAT is a love story! “Who we marry is one of the most important decisions in life, one that will influence the level of happiness, growth, and success like no other choice.” —Nathan Workman

Accepting Differences

We All Learn Best by Example

February is a month of love…too bad it’s the shortest month of the year! The world can always use more love, understanding, and tolerance. Loving one’s neighbor doesn’t always come easily, especially when it comes to someone who is very different from you. We have to be taught to look beyond differences. There is something good in everyone. Take, for example, those who have beliefs that are different from yours (and your family’s). Usually, people’s beliefs are learned from their parents or gleaned from personal experiences. Remember, many people once thought the world was flat…that the edge of the world was located only as far as one could see. In a mountainous region, that wasn’t very far. At the edge of an ocean, the view seemed almost endless…but the horizon was still there. Because we’re no longer Earthbound, those beliefs have been proven erroneous, though I’ve heard there are still those who believe the Earth is flat. (I think they need to travel more.) When your children express beliefs that differ from yours (and they will), ask them why they believe that. I once asked a class to draw a forest, adding as many trees as they felt were needed. No two forests were alike! The trees making them up all looked different: some were triangular; others were round; still others were an odd shape of branches. Some forests were

By Marge Shoemaker

made up of several trees; others contained only a few. Each student drew what they knew, and none of them were wrong. When I was in the fifth grade, a new girl came to our class, and she wore jeans! Girls didn’t wear jeans or trousers or pants…we wore skirts or dresses. (Yes, this was a long time ago.) Because I had often been the new girl in class, I asked Jonna why she wore jeans to school. She explained that she came from ranch country and that she and her siblings rode horses to school because it was too far to walk. That made sense. Riding a horse in a skirt would not be comfortable or practical. Then she asked why we all wore skirts, especially in the winter, when it was cold. That made sense, too. Wearing pants in the winter certainly was reasonable. Jonna didn’t seem so different after that. Kids are usually better at overlooking differences than adults. They know, unless taught otherwise, that it isn’t necessary to like how everyone dresses or thinks or talks or looks. Our differences are what make us (and the world) more interesting. Think how boring it would be if everyone was the same. We all need to learn to accept (or at least tolerate) differences in others. Kids often follow what their parents do. Let them know by your example that it’s okay to be different. It makes life more pleasant…and interesting!

It is difficult to talk to your family about your wishes for your funeral or memorial service—that’s just true. Another truth is that it is a very loving gesture to do so. It will be easier for your family if they can celebrate your life as you wished without having to worry about whether or not you would have approved of their choices for the service. If you are young and healthy when you’re reading this, you may think that you have plenty of time to think about this, and you may well be right. However, it is always a good time to pre-plan your funeral service. The more details you plan for your funeral in advance, the easier it will be for your family to execute your wishes in their time of grief. I speak from experience when I say that grief can make the simplest decisions seem exceedingly difficult. The stress on a family can be daunting. If you have not made your wishes clear in advance, your family will be left to guess what you may or may not have wanted. What a gift it would be to them if you

have done that work beforehand, allowing them to use their strength to support each other. Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler provides the opportunity to pre-plan all aspects of a funeral and follows through with your specific wishes. The advantages of planning your services with a pre-planner are numerous. First, you will greatly reduce the stress on your family. Second, you may also help prevent

family conflict by pre-planning. If your family is left to guess about what you wanted, it is easy for family members to disagree, which leads to unnecessary tension and strife during a time when no one is at their best. Another advantage to pre-planning is the ability to save money. Purchasing funeral arrangements is just like purchasing anything else—if you have time to shop around, you can get the best deal for the price. If your family is frantically trying to get all your arrangements in order with no guidance from you, they may end up spending more than they need to. One particular advantage to pre-planning may not have occurred to you. Discussions with your family about this topic may, in fact, encourage some meaningful conversations with them. People often feel awkward about discussing the end of life. If you start the conversation, however, you may be surprised by what you find out about your final wishes as well as your family members’ wishes. Jeff Meuret, a pre-need counselor with Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler, is a very resolute man who has been in the pre-planning business for 32 years. This kind and caring counselor is dedicated to giving personalized service to those seeking his advice. Jeff can suggest ways to gather information that you may need before you start making your plans. He will make sure that your wishes and desires are recorded, from music to pall bearers to who should speak at your service. Jeff is wholly committed to creating a pre-planning

experience that provides freedom from anxiety. “The peace of mind and comfort that we can give our customers, and the burden that we can lift from them, is so gratifying,” he shares. The most difficult part of his position, he says, is “getting past the obstacles with people who have never considered the advantages to planning ahead and not leaving that burden for their family to contend with.” Jeff can create a personal funeral profile to record your wishes. If you choose to pre-pay, today’s prices are locked in and guaranteed. Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler is the largest funeral home business in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area, with seven locations. They are locally owned and operated and have been in the funeral business for over 125 years. These caring funeral professionals are devoted to making each service a personal experience that honors the deceased’s life. They have a full-time grief counselor on staff to help with the challenges that come with losing a loved one. Jeff encourages people to pre-plan their own service to ensure that they have a voice in that planning, and he can make sure you’ve covered all the bases with your selections. This is one of the most loving actions that you can take to make sure your family is not left with the burden of decisions in the wake of your death. Romantic Destinations For Romantic Getaways

By Jackie Williams

As we all know, travel destinations and options are up in the air these days, and I cannot stress enough the importance of using a travel agent for any reservations right now. With travel restrictions in flux, you will likely need help with a Plan B (or even a Plan C, for that matter) to make sure you can take a vacation somewhere. My friend, Ravyn Howard, is a seasoned travel agent and has been helping her clients find romantic destinations for the vacation they sorely need. Here are some of her recommendations for you to consider booking while you still can! Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea If your idea of a romantic trip includes clear blue waters and natural aromatherapy, book a Club level room at the Four Seasons Resort in Maui. For a change of scenery, take advantage of the free chauffeur rides from the resort to anywhere in Wailea, or pack a picnic lunch and rent the Porsche Roadster for a road trip of your own. If you are the outdoorsy type, you can choose from a fantastic golf course, e-bike rentals and, of course, all the water sports you care to play. Turtle Bay Resort Oahu on the North Shore If you prefer the island of Oahu, you simply must take advantage of the Vista Level and Ocean Club. The stunning views of the ocean are not to be missed. Watch humpback whales breach and splash during the day and get drenched in the colors of the sunset each night. How does spending a day exploring the 12 miles of beautiful paths at the resort sound, followed by a coconut lava shell couples massage? Grand Velas Los Cabo Resort This all-inclusive property is voted “No. 1 Mexican Resort in the World” by Tripadvisor. If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort awash in luxury, romance, and adventure, then this is your place. Experience the star-filled skies from your very own balcony, eat at gourmet restaurants, and dance along with live music—all with panoramic ocean views at every turn. The 35,000-square-foot SE Spa is a must! Sandals Royal Barbados Want to be picked up in a Bentley and have a room with an outdoor tub? The all-inclusive Sandals Royal Barbados, located in the St. Lawrence Gap area, is very romantic. Booking a Sandals vacation also lets you visit their nearby resorts for free. That multiplies your choice of restaurants, beaches, and amenities for a new experience each day. This is a great destination if you like to dress up a bit, too, as it is resort casual by day and evening attire at night. The more I look at their website, the sooner I want 42

to go! Get the most perks for the price by booking through a travel agent. Douro Valley Portugal Six Senses Resort When you are ready to venture farther and want a destination to explore outside of a resort, visit Douro Valley in Portugal and stay at Six Senses. Imagine looking out your window to see rolling hills and the Douro River. Staying in the world’s oldest distinguished wine region, in a 19th-century manor that leads out to secret gardens, is romantic in itself. The hardest decision will be where you want your picnic setting. The resort’s estate covers 19 acres and offers the ultimate Douro wine and spa experience. While you are both unwinding, sign up for a personalized wellness evaluation that ranges from sleep to skin analysis. If you both enjoy wine tasting, biking, picnics, and historic gardens, Douro Valley should be at the top of your list. Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa Some say the perfect romantic vacation has to be in an over-the-water bungalow. If that is your dream, head over to Tahiti and stay at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa. The resort has outstanding views of the sunrise, sunset, mountains, and ocean. With your own private plunge pool and clawfoot tub, you might not find a reason to leave your room at all—until it’s time for spa treatments, that is! Bora Bora Everyone wants to go to Bora Bora. It’s the ultimate destination for a couple in love. A 50-minute flight from Moorea brings you to the island of perfect white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, and exquisite coral gardens. The 15-square-mile island is what many describe as paradise. Be as active or inactive as you want. Picture yourself jumping into the lagoon from your bungalow and stargazing under a billion stars at night. I hope these suggestions whet your appetite to book a romantic getaway this month. We all could use a break! Sources for this article included: montecitovillagetravel. com, sandals.com, and loscabos.grandvelas.com.

The Economist and the Beauty Pageant John Maynard Keynes

By George Morgan

Washington and the news media have spent the last three months discussing how to use government spending to kick-start the U.S. economy. Using government spending as an economic stimulus is the brain child of 20th century British economist John Maynard Keynes. Keynes developed this concept in response to the global depression that occurred during the 1930s. In addition to being a revolutionary economist, Keynes was also a prolific investor. His management of his personal fortune and the endowment funds of his alma mater, Oxford University, drew praise on both sides of the Atlantic. The methods he applied to investing were as revolutionary as his approach to government spending policy. Keynes’s contemporary professional money managers devoted their days to devouring all the public information about the financials of publicly traded companies, searching for those who produced the greatest earnings. They then calculated how those earnings translated into the company’s stock price. Keynes took an entirely different tack. He believed that the economic value of the company was not the important measure—the only thing that mattered was what other investors thought it was worth. He approached investing from the perspective of someone who was asked to guess who would win a beauty pageant. In this case, Keynes said, do not guess the contestant who you think is the best choice to win. You are not the one who determines the winner. That decision is up to the judges. Choose the contestant you think the judges will choose. The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, agrees with Keynes that the opinion of other investors matters. In fact, Buffett takes Keynes’ observations one step further. Buffett gives the stock market a human persona that he calls Mr. Market. Buffett’s Mr. Market is an emotional investor who constantly offers to buy and sell stocks to any interested party. Mr. Market is a tongue-in-cheek recognition of the fact that most stock market actions are based on arbitrary, random activity rather than rational, calculated reasoning. Buffett writes that Mr. Market’s price quotations are usually arbitrary. At times, Mr. Market feels euphoric and can only see the favorable factors affecting the world of finance. When he is in that mood, Mr. Market names a very high price because he fears that you will snap up his offer and rob him of potential gains. At other times, he is depressed and can see nothing but trouble ahead for the economy. On these occasions, Mr. Market will name a very low price, since he is terrified that you will unload your stocks on him. Mr. Market doesn’t mind being ignored, and he’ll always be back tomorrow, ready to quote you a new irrational price.

A case in point occurred during the early 2000s, when tech stocks were all the rage. There was a local tech company that became a household name. Everywhere I went, people would ask me about this stock. The analysts for the brokerage firm where I worked thought it was an extremely risky investment and were unwilling to recommend it. Several brokers went to the company’s CEO to demand that our analysts recommend it. The analysts relented, and the stock went from $50 to $200. Then, when investors decided that the company was never going to make any money, the stock price plummeted to $2. Large sums of money were made and lost on the basis of public perception instead of financial reality. Not everything that happens in the stock market is this extreme, but there is an element of Keynes’s beauty pageant present in the stock market every day. I offer this information not to imply that individual investors should make this the core of their investment plan, but rather to make them aware that this paradigm exists. Individual investors can be divided into two broad categories: those who make their own investment decisions and those who rely on a professional to manage their assets. Those who rely on a professional will likely see their investment mix move from a heavy weighting in stocks toward a higher weighting of bonds. This is because of the perception that inflation is rising and that bond yields will rise in response to that growth. For those of you who manage your own investment portfolios: Pay close attention to what the news media and the financial industry talking heads are saying about how the market will respond when Washington finalizes its spending policies. I am not here to predict what will happen; I am only here to alert you to the impact that public perception and the news media have on the market. Editor’s Note: George Morgan has five decades’ experience in all phases of the investment process. He is currently the Founder and Principal of Morgan Investor Education. His website is morganinvestoreducation.com. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing.

The Green Thumb

The Joy of Houseplants Phytoremediation for Everyone

By Linda Sutherland

Phytoremediation is a long word for the process of plants scrubbing contaminants from the air…. and we have NASA to thank for this. In the 1980s, NASA scientists were looking for ways to improve the air quality in a sealed spacecraft. From their study, they concluded that the roots and soil of houseplants reduced airborne organic compounds. More recent findings show that you would have to have a large number of plants in a room to be as efficient as some modern biofilters…but wouldn’t you rather freshen the air beautifully and naturally? There are so many reasons to have living plants in your home and workspace. As we learned from NASA, the right plants can neutralize harmful airborne substances in your home and office. Studies have also shown that plants may boost productivity in your workspace. (I don’t know about you, but I will take all the help I can get on that front.) Additionally, they found that people with plants in their workspace took fewer sick days. None of these reasons even touches on the most obvious advantage to indoor plants: They are beautiful! Everyone enjoys having green space outdoors, and it can improve our lives indoors, too. Many studies have shown various positive effects of having plants in the room. A look at brain scans in one study showed that students with real, live plants in the classroom were more attentive and better able to concentrate than

students who were in a classroom with no live plants. A study by Kansas State University revealed that patients exposed to houseplants in their hospital rooms had shorter recovery periods than those who did not have plants in their rooms. In climates that get freezing temperatures in the winter, houses become dry because of furnace use. Houseplants can increase the humidity indoors with a process called transpiration (when water vapor passes through the plant and into the air). Maintaining healthy humidity levels in the air has been shown to impede the spread of influenza in the air. Considering how much time we spend in our homes in the winter, this seems like a “win-win” to me. I speak from personal experience when I tell you that nurturing plants will improve your mental well-being. We all have nurturing instincts, and we like to contribute positively

to the environment. Growing plants checks both of those boxes. It is also great fun to watch your plants grow and thrive…and when our plants thrive, we are happier. As someone who is pretty much obsessed with outdoor gardening, I have become quite enamored with indoor gardening. Being surrounded by plants in the home can only be a good thing. It is really simple to get started with houseplants and it is actually quite fun! Houseplants are visually appealing and, in most cases, are low-maintenance and amazingly easy to take care of. One caveat: If you have animals or young children living in your home (or frequently visiting), you don’t want any toxic plants around to cause stomach upset or even poisoning if ingested. Look up your houseplant selections online (or ask at the garden center) to make sure you’re choosing plants that will be safe for everyone in the house. What are some good plants for a novice to have in the home or office? You might start out with a parlor palm (also known as the bamboo palm or “good luck” palm). They require only modest maintenance and can survive in most low light. Wait for it…they also filter out nasty chemicals in the air! If you’re the type of person who doesn’t always remember that you have plants, the baby rubber plant is a good choice. They don’t need much attention, though they do need some light. Do not confuse this with a rubber tree, which is toxic to pets and humans. The spider plant is a favorite, and it makes those wonderful baby spider plants. Surprise your friends or office mates with cuttings to start their own indoor gardens! Burro’s tails are also wonderful in homes because they are low-maintenance and can adapt to different lighting environments. Christmas cactus is a great adapter, as well. If you want it to bloom, cut back on watering. Personally, I love bird’s nest ferns. They are proven to be hard-working air filters. They are especially happy in a bathroom, where higher humidity is likely to be found. Boston ferns are always a favorite of mine and are completely non-toxic (not so with many other ferns). Bromeliad plants are considered effective at reducing air pollutants and are drought-resistant. If you’re new to houseplants, I hope you’ll start your collection this year! Seasons of Life

Mental Wellness for Seniors Living our Later Years to the Fullest

By Linda Barnes

Seniors who are enduring the physical health issues that accompany aging may find it a bit unsettling to realize that they may also face mental health issues. In fact, depression is said to be the most common mental disorder among seniors. The good news is that mental health issues readily respond to treatment. Specialists are now focusing on prevention, as well. Recognizing warning signs and getting early help are believed to be the keys to mental fitness as we age. Social isolation plays a major role in poor mental health, and seniors often deal with life changes that leave them cut off from social interaction. Some of the warning signs of mental illness include changes in mood, fatigue, or loss of appetite; changes in sleeping habits; increased feelings of worry or stress; anger, irritability, or increased alcohol use; obsessive or compulsive behavior; or intrusive thoughts or behaviors that affect work, family, or social life. It can be difficult to distinguish between depression and dementia. Difficulty concentrating, for example, can look like memory loss when it is actually due to depression. With early treatment, symptoms of depression can improve, along with memory and concentration. An estimated 20 percent of people aged 55 years or older are experiencing mental health issues; depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment are the more common forms. Although depressive symptoms tend to increase with age, they should

not be considered a normal part of aging. Social support is important for maintaining overall good health—it is believed to reduce the risk of both mental illness and physical illness. Over 12 percent of those aged 65 years and older say they do not receive the emotional and social support they need. How can one address mental concerns? A physician can recommend a psychiatrist or other mental health professional to do an evaluation. If issues such as depression or anxiety are identified, typical treatments include medications, talk therapy, or a combination of the two. With elderly patients, a geriatric psychiatrist may be especially helpful. This is a psychiatrist who specializes in the issues and complications most often experienced by seniors. It is good to remember that physical illnesses common to seniors may be adding to mental health issues. Medications associated with some of the health issues older people face may be causing or exacerbating mental concerns, as well. Some risk factors are believed to contribute to mental issues with age. They include certain medical conditions, major

life changes, trauma or stress, and a family history of mental illness. Mental conditions such as depression may occur along with illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Physical illness may be worse when depression happens alongside it. In some cases, people who have experienced depression earlier in life find that it worsens with age. This could be caused by neurological changes in an aging brain, or you may be taking other medications now that are interacting with your antidepressant. Your mental health provider is the best resource for these kinds of investigations. We have many strategies for preventing physical disease as we age. Unlike conditions such as heart disease or diabetes, management of mental issues generally involves treatment only after the problem arises. Thankfully, researchers are now looking at the possibilities for preventing mental illness. Innovations in mental illness prevention are under investigation in areas such as pharmacology, psychotherapy, and psychosocial intervention. As Ben Franklin notably said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” In a 12-week study, researchers found that seniors with mild depression saw significant improvement of symptoms when they exercised ACS - Surviving Sixth.indd three times a week. We know that regular exercise has health benefits for everyone. A program designed around your specific needs and limitations may be the ticket to better mental health. A fitness trainer has expertise in such matters. Since our brain is an integral part of our body, the same lifestyle changes that enhance physical health are likely to boost brain health. These include eating a healthy diet that includes more fruits, vegetables, and fish, as well as less meat and saturated fat. A dietitian can devise a plan that meets your nutritional needs. Experts believe that staying intellectually engaged has a positive effect on the brain and cognitive function. Reading, playing a musical instrument, or doing crossword puzzles are good activities. To boost benefits, combine these with social interaction, which is also vital for mental health. Consider taking a class that interests you at a local senior center or community college. There is much to be hopeful about where mental issues are concerned. Early detection and treatment of such problems are the keys to a fuller life as we age. The Nature Conservancy’s mission is to preserve plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. We’ve been working in Nebraska to do just that. The Nature Conservancy’s Niobrara Valley Preserve is one of the largest Conservancy preserves in the U.S. and is a model for grassland management using bison, cattle, and fire. It encompasses majestic pine-clad canyons, extensive grasslands, and a 25-mile stretch of the Niobrara River. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the preserve year-round, and of special interest is the bison herd grazing in the vast open prairie. The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program identified the Niobrara Valley Preserve as the biological crossroads of the Great Plains. To date, 581 plant, 213 bird, 86 lichen, 70 butterfly, 44 mammal, 25 fish, 17 reptile and 8 amphibian species have been recorded at the Preserve. Visitors are welcome to walk the new hiking trail west of the Preserve mailbox (foot traffic only, please). The trailhead includes a small parking area and information kiosk. You have your choice of the long loop or the short loop, both with grand views of the Niobrara River. You may enjoy the Norden chute at the Norden Bridge, as well. Peak Performance

The Shape of You

Plastic Surgery and Breast Confidence

By Maria Harding

Some women have faced a lifelong struggle to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin due to the unusual size or shape of their breasts. For others, the change in breast appearance came on suddenly, due to pregnancy or cancer surgery. Some transgender women may long for more curves than estrogen therapy can provide. If you have considered breast reduction or enhancement, but hesitate because of unknown cost and risk factors, you need more information. Here, we examine some of the risks and benefits of surgery and offer points to consider before moving forward. Any surgical procedure involves some degree of risk. Some patients react adversely to anesthesia. Complications can lead to minor inconveniences, such as nausea or confusion for a few days. In the worst cases, complications can be life-threatening. Talk with your doctors about any preexisting conditions, current medications, or family history of issues with anesthesia. Patients may suffer post-surgical nerve damage, affecting sensation on the breasts and nipples. Scar tissue can be difficult to predict and may create tightness across the chest that restricts movement or puckers at the incision site. Implants undergo rigorous oversight by the FDA, but some women report systemic reactions to the material from which the implants are made. Implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime. Though these risks are rare, their presence makes it especially important to choose a skilled surgeon and recovery team. Take ample time to interview potential doctors, and talk with them about your medical history and expectations. Look for surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Search for patient reviews of the facility you plan to use, and talk to friends who have undergone the procedure. Were they satisfied with their care? It’s helpful to hear first-hand accounts. Going into your initial consultation, you will probably have some idea of how you want to look post-surgery, but ask your doctor for an experienced assessment of what changes are realistic. Computer software allows a photograph of you to be digitally altered, so you can see the expected results. If you are seeking an augmentation, you will also discuss the different implant options for size, shape, and material. Women with large, heavy breasts can attest that the imbalanced weight often leads to pain in the upper back and neck. Pendulous breasts can also cause irritating skin rashes or tags. The excessive weight and friction make it extremely uncomfortable to exercise and breathe freely. Breast reduction can help with all of these issues. The surgery removes some of the breast tissue and skin, refines the shape of the breast, and can reduce the size of the areola.

As your doctor will likely explain to you in detail, the actual reduction or augmentation procedure usually takes one or two hours. It is generally an outpatient surgery, although some patients elect to stay overnight for observation. For the 48 hours following surgery, patients are advised to sleep upright to reduce swelling. For the next two weeks, patients should refrain from lifting heavy objects, raising their arms above their head, and exercising vigorously. Full recovery generally takes six to eight weeks. Most aesthetic breast surgeries are considered elective and are therefore not covered by medical insurance. In some circumstances, the surgery can be deemed medically necessary, such as when the weight of the breasts causes identifiable health problems or when cancer treatment calls for reconstruction. Consult with your doctor’s facility to determine how your insurance company will categorize your surgery. Fees are typically paid before surgery. All breast procedures—augmentation, reduction, or lifts—are comparable in cost and can range from $3,000– $6,000. This does not include additional charges such as operating room fees, anesthesia, and physical therapy. Women might consider waiting until after they are done having children before having breast surgery. Many changes take place during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is best to let the body cycle through those changes before assessing what alterations will lead to best results. Incisions in some areas of the breast may also interfere with lactation. The dream of an ideal physique may appeal to many women, but they might feel plastic surgery is not for them. Some women cling to a negative stigma regarding plastic surgery because of extreme or cartoonish examples that can be seen in the tabloids. The truth is that modern plastic surgery can be done tastefully and well. Why not make your dream a reality? Make sure you are well informed about all aspects of your breast surgery before making the decision. When you make necessary preparations and know what to expect, you can focus on being delighted with the results. Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. Home Improvement Solutions

By Angella Arndt

Home ownership is rewarding and is often one of life’s most significant financial investments. Maintenance and home improvement are essential to preserving a home’s value but can seem overwhelming at times. Do you dread the thought of painting your home or window trim? Does your deck need to be stained? Do your gutters and downspouts get clogged with leaves? Are you looking for solutions? Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. is ready to help you with high-quality products that will save you time and improve your home’s exterior. A family-owned business for over 70 years, Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. began in the 1950s. Al Albracht worked in the home improvement industry for several years before deciding to purchase a franchise location of the well-known Perma-Stone Company. Perma-Stone installed cultured, colored stone on the front of homes. The company transitioned from stone to aluminum siding, then steel siding, and eventually vinyl siding. The business grew to include roofing, storm doors, and windows. It was renamed Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. in the early 1970s to reflect the expanded service offerings. Tom Albracht worked for his father at Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Tom aspired to become a professional golfer and spent two years as an apprentice and assistant at a local country club before pursuing a different career path. He was a sales representative for a national company for several years and was offered a promotion. However, the offer required relocating, and Tom and his new wife, Kristi, did not want to move. His dad was ready to retire at that same time and asked Tom to take over the business. The timing was right, and Tom was ready for the challenge, so he purchased the business from his father in 1987. “I always knew I could sell, and I received good sales training and learned time-management skills during my time as a sales representative,” Tom recalls. Tom and his brother Steve, Marketing Director, now run the business together. The company’s product line gradually expanded and now includes vinyl siding, roofing, decks, doors, windows, and a gutter protection system. “Vinyl siding provides the best value for your home. It has withstood the test of time, it’s attractive, and it’s durable,” Tom says. “Vinyl windows are very energy-efficient and provide the best value for your money.” Composite decks provide durability and low maintenance. The company offers ProVia doors and windows, and the doors are made of 20-gauge commercial-grade steel. The Leaf Sentry gutter protection system fits existing gutters to prevent gutter and downspout clogs. Why choose Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co.? One reason is that the company purchases its products 52

directly from manufacturers, L-R: Tom and Steve Albracht which benefits its clients. “For example, as a direct dealer for ProVia, we get competitive pricing and can take better care of our clients because we don’t go through a distributor,” Tom notes. Although independent trade contractors install the products, Tom affirms that Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. guarantees the work. Tom and Steve take pride in providing outstanding customer service. “We are responsive to our clients’ needs. We set realistic expectations and we don’t overpromise. My dad always said that if you take care of your customers, your customers will take care of you. We have a lot of customers, but I have also made a lot of friends.” Tom offers some advice for homeowners in the process of hiring a home improvement company. First of all, find out how long the company has been in business. Ask about their track record. The company should inspire a feeling of trust. “Trust is a big deal. We have over 70 years of experience in the business.” Ask questions to ensure the company will meet your needs. How much experience do they have with your type of project? What is their availability? Ask for references. Additionally, the company you select should be licensed, bonded, and insured. Asking questions in advance will help you hire the contractor who is best able to meet your needs. Tom enjoys meeting and interacting with people and finds his work rewarding. “We live and work doing things the right way. Our products provide attractive and durable home improvement solutions.” Tom remarks that much of their business is referral-based. “We improve people’s homes, but we are also improving their lives by giving them more time to do things they enjoy.” Albracht Perma-Siding & Window Co. is located at 10723 Mockingbird Drive, in Omaha. The office and showroom are by appointment only. Call 402-331-4666 for more information or to schedule an appointment. You can find them online at permasiding.com.

Vehicle Insurance

Get the Coverage You Need

By Linda Sutherland

Car insurance can be confusing and expensive, but it is not optional. That said, not all types of car insurance are required in every state or on every vehicle. Car insurance laws are set and enforced at the state level, and 49 out of 50 states require all drivers to carry an active insurance policy. (In New Hampshire, drivers are not legally required to have car insurance, but they do have to show proof of monetary responsibility.) You need car insurance because you are liable for damage that you may cause to other people and their property while driving your car.You may also carry optional comprehensive and collision coverage to cover damage to your own vehicle. The coverages required by most states are for bodily injury and property damage. Keeping in mind that each state has their own coverage limits, to legally register and drive your vehicle, you need to maintain at least your state’s minimum level of liability insurance. The cost of coverage varies depending on the type of vehicle and financing. Generally speaking, an older car costs less to insure than a new car (unless the old car is a classic). The simple reason for this is that older cars would not cost as much to replace with a like item in the event of a total loss. If you’ve been considering the RV life, you may already know that they need insurance, as well. Most states require a

minimum of liability insurance, but if you are considering a motorhome, you probably want to skip the cheap insurance and choose a policy that goes beyond the state minimum liability requirements. What about motorcycles? In most states, motorcyclists must have at least $25,000 in bodily injury protection per person and $50,000 per accident, plus $10,000 in property damage coverage. If you got a four-wheeler or ATV for Christmas, you need to think about insurance. Depending on where you are riding said vehicle (in a state park, for example), ATV insurance is required by law. Some states require insurance on an ATV if you drive it off your own property. It is important to check

Eye Care for All Generations Maintain Healthy Vision

By Angella Arndt

Do you have regular health and dental exams as part of your health care regimen? Do you do the same for your eyes? According to the CDC, approximately 11 million Americans older than 12 years need vision correction. The CDC also notes that only half of the estimated 93 million American adults at high risk for vision loss have visited an eye doctor in the last year. Regular eye care is essential to correcting vision as well as detecting and treating eye diseases that threaten vision loss or blindness. Countertops and Backsplashes New Life in the Kitchen or Bath

By Anne Yankus

Do you ever look around your kitchen and just sigh? Do you wish you could spruce up your bathroom without gutting all the fixtures and cabinetry? Consider installing new countertops and backsplashes to breathe some new life into your kitchen or bathroom! We all know that large renovations have been challenging over the past year or two, what with supply shortages, over-booked contractors, and shipping delays. At this point, it might be time to look at less labor-intensive ideas for brightening up your home. That’s where a new countertop and backsplash come in. Just changing out those two simple things will completely transform the look of a room. The upgrades will also add to your home’s resale value and can even make cooking and cleaning easier. As we enter a new decade, we should expect to see some new style trends in home design and decorating. Backsplashes are coming back in a big way! No more minimalist backsplashes with tiny, 2-inch tiles. This year is seeing large ceramic tile, glass, or metallic backsplashes that can extend all the way up to the ceiling. What a beautiful way to combat stains and grease on painted walls! Countertops, on the other hand, are trending toward natural-looking and durable. That means wood or natural stone

designs like granite, soapstone, marble, and quartz. Fully wooden countertops have taken a back seat to stone over the past several years, but they can bring a warmth to the room that cool stone can’t match. Usually made of hardwoods such as maple or oak, wooden countertops are relatively easy to clean and can last for a very long time when properly cared for. Another benefit of wooden countertops is that they can be sanded and resealed as many times as you may need to keep them smooth and looking new. The downsides are that wooden countertops are fairly expensive to purchase up front and can be easily damaged or stained by knives and water if not regularly maintained. Granite has been a tried-and-true countertop choice for years, and no wonder: It’s impervious to heat, strong, durable, and almost completely maintenance-free. Granite can also add immense value to your home, and it comes in thousands of different colors and designs. However, granite is very expensive to purchase. It absolutely needs to be installed

I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. by a professional. Risks of cracking and staining can be mitigated if the slabs are sealed and installed properly. Soapstone only comes in a dark gray color that may darken further over time. If that hue works for your kitchen, it can be a great alternative to granite. It’s impervious to heat and is somewhat stain-resistant (most damage can be sanded out). Soapstone countertops will need to be regularly treated with mineral oil. Soapstone is another material that requires professional installation. Marble is, of course, an elegant and beautiful stone that is extremely expensive. It has the benefits of being waterproof and heatproof, and it adds excellent value to your home. Like soapstone and granite, marble needs to be installed by a pro, and it is quite difficult to repair. Quartz, or “engineered stone,” is a man-made product created by binding quartz particles together with resin. Unlike other stone countertops, quartz doesn’t require any sealing, but it still retains the benefits of being impervious to heat. Since it’s created synthetically, quartz can also be fabricated into any size and shape. Like any slab countertop, quartz is still relatively expensive. Choosing what kind of new coun- Love Has No Race - sixth.indd tertop you want is the fun part for your family. Installation, on the other hand, should be left to the professionals. The weight of a slab countertop is significant, and adhesives for tile or laminate counters require precision and expertise to end up looking fabulous. There are several things to ask of potential contractors before you decide which one to hire. Do they charge extra for a finished edge? How does tear out and removal of your previous counters and backsplashes work? Is sealing included? How much extra will it cost to cut out holes for existing outlets, sinks, and plumbing fixtures? A reputable installer should be able to answer all these questions and any more you can think of, as well as giving you pricing estimates for everything. You don’t have to settle for the same old counters and backsplashes year after year. With the right material and professional installation, you can redefine your kitchen or bathroom’s whole look in no time, without the fuss of a full renovation! Cuddly Critters

Natural Pet Food Products Doing What Comes Naturally

By Jackie Byers

We love our pets and want them with us for as long as possible, so we want to do what we can to keep them in good health. Domesticated pets are susceptible to many of the same ailments as humans, including kidney problems, stomach issues, cancer, and diabetes. A healthy diet is vital for a healthy pet. Natural, fresh food offers protection to keep your pet healthy. Natural pet foods sounds like the way to insure good health, but “natural” is just an adjective, variously and vaguely defined. Manufacturers use the word as they choose when labeling pet food. That said, it’s still important to read the label. Truly natural pet food should not contain unpronounceable preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, corn syrup, wheat, or soy. Some canned dog food is up to 60 percent fat. While fat is important in a healthy diet, that is too high a percentage. As with processed food for humans, some commercial dog foods are cooked at such high temperatures that beneficial nutrients are lost. Fresh dog foods offer the nutrition and benefits that keep dogs healthy and active. Healthy pet food should contain the same types of nutrients that healthy human food does. Like us, pets need protein, carbs, vitamins, minerals, calcium, and fat. Proportions and preparation differ. A lively debate exists online over wet food versus dry food: kibble in a bag or refrigerated real meat ingredients. Be wary of putting too much stock in advice posted in an online forum. While other pet owners have experience with their own animals, you can’t beat the experience and expertise of your pet’s veterinarian. Your vet knows what nutritional or health issues your pet may have. The vet can recommend healthy bagged and canned foods and can direct you to quality stores or websites to buy pet food. Local pet boutiques and even bakeries that specialize in pet treats can be excellent resources. Many of us have been cooking at home more often lately, and we like the control that gives us over what we eat. Making your pet’s food at home will give you the same control over your pet’s nourishment. Keep in mind that making fresh pet food is a frequent task, and purchasing fresh, pre-made pet food can be pricey. Whether purchased or homemade, fresh dog food lasts four days in the refrigerator and up to six months in the freezer. If you’re planning to opt for homemade, using a food scale is a good plan for getting recipe proportions right. Since dogs and cats are descended from carnivores, their diets should be meaty—up to 40 percent protein. The American Kennel Club recommends at least 18 percent protein just to maintain weight and a minimum of 22 percent for growth. Meat should be well-cooked to kill bacteria. 62

February 2022

Many experts advise against serving your pet raw meat. One or two cooked eggs per week can be a fine source of protein. Dogs and cats also need fats for energy, healthy coats, and brain development. Fish oils and other omega-3 fatty oils are good sources of healthy fat. Do check with your vet before feeding fish to your pet—some types can cause digestive problems. Fruits are healthy snacks but should only be a minor part of a pet’s diet. Veggies offer essential fiber, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, and nutrients. Rotate your fruits and vegetables seasonally—this provides variety for your pet and gives your budget a break. Starches are essential to pet health. They should amount to around 10 percent of a pet’s diet. These carbs should be lightly cooked, avoiding oils. Blanching and steaming are the best options to preserve essential nutrients. Boiling leaches out nutrients. A small amount of dietary calcium is essential for a pet’s bones. Ground egg shells are used commercially. Yogurt is often too sugary. Shredded cheese is a great calcium treat. Like humans, pets may sometimes need pain relief. Many natural-minded pet owners are looking to CBD products to ease inflammation in pets’ sore joints, lessening the stiffness of age. These products come in various pet-friendly forms like tinctures, balms, chews, and treats. Check local pet boutiques as well as CBD retailers to find these products. Research into the efficacy and long-term effects of hemp products is ongoing (for pets and humans alike). Early evidence indicates that CBD oils may help lower a pet’s stress levels when dealing with separation anxiety, thunderstorms, or fireworks. Talk to your vet about these products and an appropriate dosage for your pet. Never medicate your pet without your vet’s advice. Feeding your pet healthy food and carefully medicating when necessary will give you a longer time to love each other. Sources for this article included: AKC.com, wagwalking.com, and pets.webmd.com.

Positive Perspective

Wake Up!

By Janet Van deWalle

Make the Positive Choice

How are YOU today? When you woke up, did you think about the day ahead and all the wonderful experiences that were coming your way? Did you jump out of bed with true appreciation for your wonderful night of sleep? At the bathroom mirror, did you smile at yourself and thank the Universe for all the blessings in your life? Was your heart filled with appreciation for all of those in your life who you love and who love you? “Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makes you. Choose wisely.” —Roy T. Bennett

Each day is like no other day that we have ever had before. It’s a blank canvas on which we can paint whatever we choose. When we wake up, we have the opportunity to make it great… simply by making that decision. Beginning our day with happiness, with a smile, with our hearts full of gratitude, will make it a great day, a positive day, a day to create history! “More smiling, less worrying. More compassion, less judgment. More blessed, less stressed. More love, less hate.” —Roy T. Bennett

Realizing that the point of power is right NOW will ensure

great things unfolding in our day ahead. When we go to sleep at night, it allows us the opportunity to let go of the negatives, to let go of the things that didn’t quite go as we planned. “There is renewal in rest.” —Lailah Gifty Akita

It really is that simple. On your commute, look at the driver next to you and smile. When you walk into your office, ask your coworkers how they are…and really listen to their answers. If they are negative, offer some words of encouragement, along with a smile. When you go to lunch, ask your server their name, and introduce yourself and the person you’re having lunch with. When you come home at night, give each of your loved ones an authentic hug. Let them know how much you have missed them and that you are looking forward to some quality time with them at dinner. “Every day brings new choices.” —Martha Beck

Starting tomorrow, make it a point to wake up happy and appreciative. Respect everyone you come into contact with. Wake up to how great your life is. Make the positive choice! “Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A ‘You can do it!’ when things are tough.” —Richard M. DeVos
