Hello, everyone! I hope summer has been kind to all of you. Once again, summer is disappearing in the blink of an eye. The Luke Bryan song “Most People are Good” has a line that goes like this: “I believe that days go slow and years go fast.” Boy, is that ever true! Over the last 10 years or so, I have become a real country music fan. Country music seems to be one of those things that people either love or really don’t like much at all. I used to be in the latter category. I’m not sure what turned me around. I think maybe it was the lyrics. They touch my heart. Whether the songs are about kindness, love, humility, family, or friendship, so many of them speak to me. My husband, Manny, also enjoys this genre of music. More often than not, when someone walks into our house, they will hear one of our favorite country artists playing on our sound system. I remember the first time I heard the country song “Always be Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw. It truly brought tears to my eyes. It was 2016, and my life was going in hyper speed. What that song did for me was make me reflect on how I was living, acting, and treating others. It helped me slow down, take a deep breath, and practice being kinder to those I met and those who were in my circle. Now, that’s not to say I didn’t slip on occasion. In fact, I still find myself slipping and being short-tempered. The good news is that I am now aware of these slips. Manny has also helped me change this about myself. Manny and I respect one another enough to listen, grow, and change. We know that everyone has a bad day now and then. The key is to own that bad day and not put it onto someone else and make them your punching bag. Kindness is a trait that I am working at sharing with everyone I meet. I don’t feel as if I’m alone in this quest, as the Universe keeps delivering affirmations that I’m on the right track. There is a sign on Pacific Street that says, “Be Kind.” Love it. Manny and I were at a restaurant the other night and they had a sign that said, “Be Kind or Go Home.” Fantastic. Before I go, I want to wish a happy birthday to my son, Adam, who turns 32 in August, to my granddaughter, McKenna, who turns 11, and to my nephew, Dylan, who turns 21! I hope you all have great birthdays. On a final note, Manny asked me to mention here that my birthday was in July and that he loves me! How could I say no?

Back to School and Summer Bounty—Let’s Eat! Streusel Baked French Toast

By Kate Beiting

Lightly grease a 9x13-inch pan. Tear apart a loaf of French bread (or cut into small cubes) and put the pieces into the pan. Mix together 8 eggs, 2 cups of milk, 1/2 cup of cream, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of vanilla. Pour the egg mixture over the bread; cover and refrigerate overnight. Before baking, mix 1/2 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Cut in 1 stick of diced butter. Use your fingers to combine into a streusel. Sprinkle 1 cup of berries into the pan, then sprinkle the streusel on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 45–55 minutes. Bourbon Slushies Steep 5 tea bags in 2 cups of boiling water and let cool. Mix 1 can of frozen lemonade and 1 can of frozen orange juice (12 ounces each) with 7 cups of water. Stir in the tea. Add 3 cups of bourbon. Place the mixture in the freezer. When ready to serve, put several scoops into a cup and add a carbonated beverage. Baked Spaghetti Supper Break 8 ounces of dry spaghetti into thirds, cook until al dente, and drain. Combine the noodles with 1/2 cup of whole milk, add 1 large egg, and mix well. Place the spaghetti mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. In a large skillet, brown 1/2 pound of ground chuck, 1/2 pound of bulk Italian sausage, 1/2 of a chopped onion, and 1/2 of a chopped green pepper. Cook until done; drain grease. Add one 14-ounce jar or can of meatless spaghetti sauce and one 8-ounce can of tomato sauce. Add any seasonings you like—dried basil, dried oregano, Italian blend, salt and pepper. Pour the mixture over the cooked spaghetti. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove and

sprinkle with 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese. Bake for another 10–15 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Quick Onion Jam Peel and slice 2 or 3 onions and sauté in 2 Tablespoons of butter for 10–20 minutes, until soft and tender. Add a splash of balsamic vinegar, 1 Tablespoon of sugar, and salt and pepper to taste (other spices optional). Cook for another 5 minutes. Refrigerate. The jam is great with meats, veggies, and cheeses. Taquitos Brown 1 pound of ground chuck until done; drain grease. Add 1/4 cup of water and 1 envelope of taco seasoning (or use your own blend) to the beef. Continue to season beef as desired. Spread mixture onto 12 medium-sized flour tortillas and sprinkle a bit of cheese on each one. Roll them up tightly, securing each one with a toothpick. Spray lightly with oil or cooking spray. Place in an air fryer (preheated to 400 degrees) and cook for 4–7 minutes, until golden brown. Serve with sour cream, sliced avocadoes, and salsa.

Fresh Cukes and Dill Peel 3 cucumbers, cut in half lengthwise, and seed. Cut halves again and chop into 1-inch pieces. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet, add the cucumbers, and sauté for about 10 minutes—just until soft, not brown. Pour in 1/4 cup of heavy cream and 1 tablespoon of fresh dill. Cook and stir for another 3 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Chocolate Cookie Bars Beat 2 sticks of soft butter with 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in 1 egg yolk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir in 2 cups of flour. Pat into an ungreased 9x13-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25–30 minutes, until golden. Cool for 5 minutes and sprinkle with 1 and 1/2 cups of mini chocolate chips. Spread the chips around as they melt. Sprinkle with 3/4 cup of chopped pecans, almonds, or walnuts. Cool and cut into bars. Coconut Cream Cake Mix a boxed white cake (pudding in) with 1 cup of water, 1/3 cup of oil, and 3 eggs. Beat for 3–4 minutes. Bake in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. While the cake is cooling, poke holes over the top with a fork. Pour 1 cup of canned cream of coconut over the cake. Let cool. Cover and refrigerate. Spread the cake with prepared whipped cream or thawed frozen topping. Add a bit of toasted coconut. Refrigerate leftovers. Strawberry Yogurt Pie Mix 4 cartons of strawberry yogurt (fruit on the bottom or your favorite brand) with 1–2 cups of thawed frozen whipped topping. Pour into a ready-made chocolate or graham cracker pie crust. Freeze. Set out to thaw 20 minutes before serving.

Mood-Boosting Summer Fashion Feel-Good Looks Transition to Fall

By Holly Bell

With social events back in full swing this summer, including weddings that have been re-scheduled, summer cookouts, pool parties, and brunches, this summer is bound to be a busy one! Which fashion trends speak to your personal style? Are you tailored, casual, dressy, bohemian, artsy, or elegant? Most likely, more than one of those adjectives describes your style. The fashion trends of summer 2022 can be wrapped up in one word: joyful! Bold colors like hot pink, orange, purple, neon green, and sunny yellow are always cheery, even on their own. When paired in combinations we haven’t worn before, they look fresh, cool, and fashion forward! This bright color trend is part of what stylists and designers are calling “dopamine dressing.” It means dressing purposefully to boost your mood. Wearing bright colors is a sure way to make yourself and others smile. Shedding lockdown layers has made us all feel free again. Bright colors are not just for the beach or party this year! Brightly colored pantsuits are the latest workwear trend. Look for the new looser fit pant, along with a more fitted jacket, for a beautifully tailored silhouette. Add a sparkling white top underneath for maximum summer freshness. Going matchy-matchy is also on trend, with matching skirts and tops looking great for work. Matching yoga sets are a great option for a more casual day. Even if you didn’t go to the gym, you’ll look like you did! Yoga wear should be fitted to skim the body. It’s perfect for everyday shopping and lunching when you want to be comfortable but still look pulled together. Think of pairing your colorful leisure-wear with your readyto-wear for some new hip looks. Dresses are a perfect way to be cool and are high on my list of go-to items for summer. Summertime always brings out the floral prints and feminine dresses. This year, beautiful bold patterns are everywhere, along with romantic pale blue, sage, and white. With the return of Bridgerton on Netflix, the ultra-feminine style known as Regencycore is trending. Large statement sleeves, feminine detailing, bows, and even corset tops are popular. Add just one of these elements to your summer dress for a modern look.

YOU…

The glamour of the ’80s is also in the spotlight, with beautiful jewel tones and bold, gold, Chanel-inspired jewelry. Thick gold chains look just right with the bold colors of summer. Pearls are also making a welcome comeback, from simple pearl dangle earrings to oversized pearl chokers. Many people wonder about shoes in summer. What shoes go with what? I have narrowed it down to shoes that go with light colors and shoes that go with dark colors. When wearing lighter tones, the look of metallic makes the outfit literally shine. A beige platform with a metallic strap would be a good example. If the dress is casual enough, summer-weight tennis shoes are a good choice, embellished with a little metallic sparkle. The new kitten heel slide elevates an outfit with darker tones. These come in a wide variety of both dark and light colorations. For casual wear, loafers seem to be the hot topic of the summer. Lightweight summer fabrics dominate the summer loafer. As summer moves into fall, we often wonder how to transition our summer wardrobe for a more autumnal look. One of the simplest changes to make is to incorporate some leather (or vegan leather) into your wardrobe. A tailored leather jacket is the perfect piece to add over those summer dresses or pants. A leather skirt worn with a summer top can be an alluring combo. Add a dark leather shoe rather than your summer sandals, and you have quickly transitioned into fall fashion.

When the temperatures dip, it’s time to put away those summer platform sandals, but you can keep your white tennies out for year-round wear. Always appropriate in the fall are leather loafers or ankle boots. They look great with summer items and give your summer look just a hint of fall. Add a scarf to your look for another subtly autumnal change to your wardrobe. When draped casually around your neck, a scarf adds a bit of warmth and a bit of polish. Try wearing a sweater with your summer lightweight jeans or even white jeans. This looks effortless and elegant. You can also add a third piece to elevate your summer-into-fall look. A blazer, a lightweight sweater jacket, even a leather belt can add a fall vibe to your outfit. Go get the most out of what is left of summer and look forward to what fall fashion adventures await!

Little Waves Family Swim School Water Safety Saves Lives

By Deborah Daley

Mike McKamy might just have water in his veins instead of blood. The owner and manager of Little Waves Family Swim School in Omaha has been coaching or teaching swimming most of his life. He has tried other careers, but he always returns to what makes him happiest. Aquatics is his passion! At Little Waves, children can start learning to swim at age six months. Unlike sports clubs and membership facilities, the focus here is totally on swimming and making kids comfortable and safe in the water. According to national statistics, drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4 years (aside from birth defects). Mike works every day to bring those numbers down by teaching children to be safer in the water. “Children can start at any age, but we encourage them to start as young as possible,” Mike says. “Children who are taught at a young age are safer around water than those who have not taken swim lessons. Our students are challenged while having fun.” Mike is responsible for the entire business at Little Waves, including hiring and scheduling staff, directing day-to-day operations, handling the marketing and accounting, leading customer relations, and more. He created the curriculum after extensive years of aquatic experience and analyzing other schools’ approach to teaching. Since the program is not supported by membership fees, the emphasis is on swimming lessons and nothing else. “Our curriculum is based on biomechanics. We focus on the best body position for the child to be comfortable in the water,” Mike says. “The goal is for them to be able to float. We keep the pool at 90 degrees, which helps with floating and keeps our instructors and students warm and comfortable during lessons.” Mike swam competitively for years and began teaching at age 14. After graduating from college, he coached and became program director at the Omaha Westside Swim Club. Although he tried a career in computer programming for 17 years, the pull of the pool brought him back to parttime coaching. In 2005, a mentor encouraged him to start a swim school. “My wife and I put in an above-ground pool in our backyard in 2009 to begin lessons,” Mike recalls. “We realized we needed to make this a business and built Little Waves in 2012.” Creating his own business was not without challenges. Mike developed a comprehensive business plan after attending an entrepreneurship program at Metro Community College. That plan was presented to a local bank, which facilitated the loan in conjunction with the Small Business Administration. Over 7,000 students have entered the school since its inception. Classes are sorted by ability level and age group. “Every child is different, and age is only one factor. We assess how 12

August 2022

confident they are, if they are risk-takers willing to try things, and much more. Our approach is individualized.” The adult-toMike McKamy, Manager student ratio in the water is also individualized. “An instructor is provided for about every three preschool students,” Mike says. “Babies are accompanied by a parent along with a teacher. Classes with older students can have up to four students with one instructor.” Business is growing, primarily by word of mouth. Satisfied customers share their experience and encourage others to sign up. Laura Floral’s three children attended the school after a friend suggested it to her. “Our experience was awesome and my children feel safe around the water,” Laura shares. “I can’t believe how far along they came! I highly recommend the school and encourage others to start their children early so they don’t have fears around the pool.” Parent Emily Wageman echoes Laura’s comments. All six of Emily’s children took lessons at Little Waves. “There is a hometown feel at the facility. The instructors are personable and are truly interested in making sure your children do well. They are very honest with their approach and share their insights with you,” Emily shares. “My youngest was really scared at the beginning. It was hard, as a protective mom, to sit back and let them work with her. They were very careful and caring with her, and now she loves the water.” Families register once a month and keep that schedule unless adjustments need to be made. A Woman’s Work

Celebrating Sports Moms My New Super Heroes

By Deborah Daley

Though I am not a mother myself, I have great appreciation for mothers. They play priceless and inexhaustible roles in a family, from nurturer, to homemaker, to breadwinner. One particular role I have come to admire and respect is that of the sports mother. I have seen my sister, sister-in-law, nieces, and friends play this part with dedication and perseverance. Quite simply, sports moms are my new super heroes. Nationally, the sports mom role is praised at every award ceremony and trophy presentation, from the Heisman to the ESPYS. This makes the sports mom great fodder for storytelling. Have you seen the movie The Blind Side, featuring Sandra Bullock? Her character, based on real sports mom Leigh Anne Tuohy, adopts a homeless teenager and becomes his sports mom, helping him all the way to the NFL. The actress received an Academy Award for playing a sports mom. The sports landscape, especially in the Midwest, is a cultural phenomenon. Today, children are playing at all ages. You can see preschoolers out on a soccer field or a kindergartner playing T-ball. For me, the sports mom is commitment personified—a child’s athletic journey can last for more than a decade! Motherhood is already a tough job, and a child’s sports life can make it even more complicated. It’s normal for parents

to be excited and proud of their kids and their activities. For sports moms, supporting their kids in sports means a new level of commitment to the game itself. Sports moms will teach themselves the ins and outs of the sport, have conversations with the coaches, read about the game, and even attend seminars or seek outside advice. These enthusiasts want their young ones to do well and will commit body, soul, energy, time, and whatever else is needed to see their children succeed. Sports moms are the great organizers. Their skill at scheduling—school, work, personal lives, meals, practices, games, rides, other responsibilities—is unparalleled. I’ve seen my family members create complex charts worthy of corporate accolades in their efforts to outline intricate family calendars and make sure schedules are followed.

One role that sometimes goes unnoticed is the sports mom as healthcare provider. She takes care of all the bumps and bruises, pulling anything she might need from her bag, while not hovering or embarrassing her child. It is an art to remain calm when you are panicking inside! Some sports can be rough—in soccer, a player often ends up on the ground. Moms have to keep calm while they watch their child get bruised and battered in the name of fun. Some of the loudest voices you hear at games and matches are sports moms cheering on their kids. If their child faces a loss, moms have to stay positive, reminding their son or daughter that the result might be different next time. They are experts at hugs, encouragement, and can-do attitudes. Hundreds of miles are put on vehicles taking athletes to workouts, practices, and games…and sports moms do most of that driving. If more than one family member plays, double the mileage. Often, the car or SUV will also smell like a locker room as it serves as the dinner table or as a place for a quick nap. Flexibility is the name of the game when it comes to transportation. Sports can be very expensive when you factor in the equipment, uniforms, tournament fees, and more. Teams often have fundraisers, and team members are asked to sell candy or baked goods. Usually, it comes down to the sports mom to make sure the sales quota is met. Ensuring that sports funds are at the ready can mean giving up a new workout outfit or a pair of shoes. There are costs to being a sports mom, and these heroes gladly pay them. The majority of sports are held during the school year, when kids still have to do their homework and do well in school. Often, a mom becomes the school monitor, teaching children to manage their time and making sure school work gets done. Many nights, sports moms stay up late, helping kids review for a test. Properly balancing sports, school, and sleep takes special skill. Even if you are a sports mom, the home has to be managed. Laundry has to be done, meals made, the house cleaned, dogs walked, appointments made and kept, and much more. Somehow, these special women get everything done. I marvel at the skills and commitment of sports moms. The next time you’re at a match or a game, give a nod to the sports moms in the crowd. Where would sports be without them?

Jenny Craig

Personalized Weight Loss

By Deborah Daley

More than two thirds of Americans, including one in six children, are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Obesity is a serious health condition that is linked to more than 60 diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer. No wonder so many of us are on the hunt for weight reduction programs! Jenny Craig is a decades-old international effort, with millions of people enrolled in offices throughout the world—including two offices here in Omaha. The focus is on a holistic approach to weight loss.

When you meet Christine Coash, a franchise business owner with Jenny Craig, you are immediately struck by her energy and positivity. She owns six franchises, including the two in Omaha, two in Lincoln, and two in Des Moines. “What makes our program unique is our personalized approach to your weight loss plan,” Christine shares. “We focus on behavioral changes, nutritional intervention, weight loss, and the ability to keep the weight off.” Jenny Craig provides a personal coach to each individual, which Christine cites as a major key to the program’s success. The coach not only helps with menu planning but counsels individuals one-on-one. “Our single most important element is our coaches,” Christine asserts. “Everybody who comes to Jenny is different, whether it be their lifestyle, their physiology, or how they approach their weight loss. We work with you individually and provide support based on your needs. I call it our ‘secret sauce.’” The program is named for its founder, Jenny Craig, a woman who struggled with her own weight. She discovered in the 1960s that just working out at the gym did not lead to long-term weight loss. She did extensive research and took what she learned to create a comprehensive program that combined nutrition, fitness, and personal support. Jenny and her husband initially started the company in Australia and brought it to the United States in 1983. Individuals have joined the program throughout the world. “Jenny Craig is not a fad diet,” Christine says. “It is science-based, adhering to principles of weight loss.” Branded food is a key ingredient of the plan and changes regularly. “The food is nutritious and very tasty!” Christine shares. During the pandemic, the program expanded their online presence, going virtual to meet their clients’ needs. Curbside delivery was available, as well as home distribution. As many companies have discovered, the challenges of virtual services have also created opportunities—the Jenny Craig program experience is now available completely online if a person cannot travel to a local office. Christine knows first-hand the effectiveness of Jenny Craig. She began as a client in 1991, when she wanted to 18

August 2022

lose weight for her health and for a special event—her wedding. She lost Chris Coash, 60 pounds and found her grand passion, Franchise Owner eventually becoming a Jenny Craig coach and then a franchise owner. “Everyone has their individual journey and path to weight loss,” Christine shares. “For some people, it’s painful to ask for help; others just need a plan. Jenny provides them those personalized options.” One person who found her own path is Dawn Patten, a client who lost 46 pounds. “I joined the program in January 2020,” Dawn says. “I was very skeptical in the beginning, but I thought I would give it a try.” The secret, she says, was to follow the program 100 percent. “Eat all the food, drink a ton of water, and eat your veggies!” Dawn achieved her goal weight in September of 2020. Christine feels it’s important to invest in a career with purpose but also to invest in yourself. She has training in life coaching and applies the principles of Oola, a life approach system, to her work. When it comes to owning a business franchise, she feels there are three keys to success. “First, have a clear business plan on who you want to serve. Second, make sure you embrace and are passionate about the company’s messaging and program statements. Finally, write your own business plan.” Coaches are a vital element to Jenny Craig’s success, and Christine is always looking for good people. “I want women or men who are heart-centered and empathetic, who understand behavioral change and weight loss goals.” New hires complete a 90-day extensive training agenda. Jenny Craig offers different membership levels with free coaching. Food costs are based on the product. Given its international scope, anyone who joins can visit a Jenny Craig office anywhere in the world. In Omaha, offices are located at 325 North 78th Street (402-392-7300) and 2835 South 170th Plaza, Suite 210 (402-334-1030). Learn more about the program and how individualized coaching can help you reach your weight loss goals at jennycraig.com.

Get the Shape You Want! Reduce Fat and Tighten Skin

By Janette Calabro

Have a little extra fat around your middle? Love handles not feeling so lovely? If you have jiggly arms and legs or a behind that could use some slimming, but you’re just not up for invasive surgery, science can still help you get the body you want. There are new techniques as well as tried and true procedures that don’t require surgery, stitches, anesthesia, or even downtime. When age, sun damage, and life itself impacts your skin and body contours, you can get help from your local med spa, dermatologist, or cosmetic surgeon. Let’s look at how non-invasive fat reduction and skin tightening can address common problem areas on the body. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes non-invasive or minimally invasive slimming procedures as fat reduction options that “use heat or cooling or an injected medication to reduce fat cells.”You shouldn’t expect the dramatic results that are typical with liposuction, but these are great options if you can’t (or don’t want to) undergo surgery. “Nonsurgical fat reduction options use a variety of modalities, including ultrasound, radiofrequency, infrared light, vacuum massage, and injectable medication.” Among the procedures that comprise nonsurgical fat reduction are cryolipolysis (e.g., CoolSculpting), injection lipolysis (e.g., Kybella), radiofrequency lipolysis (e.g., Vanquish) and laser lipolysis (e.g., SculpSure).” As we age, our skin’s collagen and elastin (proteins) began to wane, and skin can start to sag. Exposure to the sun and pollution, high levels of stress, and even pregnancy or weight loss can contribute to saggy skin that looks almost like crepe paper. That’s why most skin tightening procedures stimulate the collagen beneath the skin’s surface so that more of what’s needed is produced, giving skin a smoother look on the face, neck, arms, legs, stomach, and back. FDA-cleared radiofrequency uses heat to stimulate collagen production, while FDA-approved ultrasound focuses on the epidermal layers (the outermost layers of skin) to achieve a smooth surface. Both are marketed under a variety of brand names, so talk with your skin professional to see what’s best for you and your skin. Radiofrequency uses heat for skin tightening under brand names such as vShape, Thermage, ThermaLift, Exilis, and Venus Freeze. Thermage usually requires one treatment, but other types of radiofrequency procedures may require additional sessions for better effectiveness. Tightening results are usually seen in about four months and last up to 12 months with proper skin maintenance. Radiofrequency is popular for the face and neck, but docs can also use radiofrequency to tighten loose skin on the upper arms and belly. They can even use the technology for body sculpting. Ultrasound (sometimes branded as Ultherapy) targets lax or sagging skin on the face, chin, neck, and chest. This technology safely bypasses the skin, reaching higher temperatures to accelerate collagen production and contouring. Ultherapy is FDA-approved and often only needs one treatment to produce tightening results! Ultrasound goes deeper into the skin than radiofrequency and can be 20

August 2022

tolerably uncomfortable; a topical anesthetic may be needed. Its tightening results are long-lasting (up to two years), but maintenance may be needed to maintain results. Both ultrasound and radiofrequency are non-invasive procedures for firming skin, so you can return to work the same day. Some side effects are minor swelling and redness. There’s also laser skin tightening, which uses an infrared light laser to go deep into the lowest layers of skin. The laser is hot, but not uncomfortable—much like a hot stone massage. Laser skin tightening helps jiggly, problem skin on the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, breasts, buttocks, and décolletage. Next, let’s look closer at some non-invasive fat reduction procedures. Most procedures destroy fat cells, wiping out those stubborn areas in the stomach, legs, buttocks, and upper arms. In many cases, these procedures not only remove fat but also tighten skin. Remember that these treatments aren’t meant to replace traditional weight loss solutions! They’re often used for people with a body mass index of 25 to 30 or who are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight. Patients who need to lose a more significant amount of weight need to consider more invasive procedures. Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) is one of the most common non-invasive ways to remove fat. At last look, there were 450,000 procedures done worldwide. It works by controlled cooling, which causes cellular death of fatty tissue. Those dead fat cells are eliminated naturally by the body. It is best used for stubborn fat pockets on the abdomen, buttocks, flanks, back, legs, and arms. If exercise and diet don’t get rid of the stubborn fat, CoolSculpting may be your answer! Though it’s certainly possible to gain weight after CoolSculpting if you don’t attend to a healthy diet and regular exercise, the fat cells killed during the procedure are gone forever and will not return. You might feel some pain and numbness from the cooling application. Most treatments last 30 to 60 minutes. One of the gentlest fat reduction therapies today is a low-level laser therapy (most widely known as Zerona) that issues a cold laser energy into the body’s tissues. The laser penetrates fat cells and forces them to release their fatty content into your body. From there, the fat is broken down for natural release. Most commonly used for abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and arms, this FDA-cleared laser can be used on other parts of the body. The handheld device directs cold

www.womensedition.com

energy into the treatment areas. The device doesn’t touch your body, and you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. With six 40-minute treatments, you can lose over three inches from problem areas like muffin tops. Like other non-invasive fat reduction treatments, this low-level laser therapy is designed for stubborn problem areas and is not suitable for people who are significantly overweight. Radiofrequency for non-surgical fat reduction uses therapeutic heat technology to target fat just below the skin. Once the heat energy zaps the fat cells, the remaining lipids are absorbed and eliminated naturally by the body. Radiofrequency also smooths skin and is often used to address the lumpy, “cottage cheese” texture created by cellulite. This treatment can slim thighs, buttocks, hips, and more. Once the fat cells are expelled, they won’t come back (though you can of course develop more throughout your life). Ultrasound technology safely reduces fat cells in problem spots on the belly and buttocks. As mentioned earlier, it also tightens skin for smoother body contours and is FDA-approved. You might feel tingling and warmth during the hour-long procedure (or longer, if you’re treating more areas), but little to no recovery time is required. Results are visible in about two weeks, and it only gets better from there! Some studies show up to 32 percent fat reduction in areas like the abdomen. Some experts recommend three treatments, spaced two weeks apart, for the best results. Ideally, your body weight should be within 30 pounds of your ideal weight. If you can pinch no more than an inch of fat on

Members MD.indd 1

your belly, you’re probably a good candidate. Where does the fat go? Fat cells are released after they’re destroyed into triglycerides. From there, your liver processes and removes them from your body. Laser lipolysis is a body-contouring treatment, sometimes known by the brand names SculpSure and truSculpt. It’s similar to CoolSculpting in that it breaks down fat cells underneath the skin. Instead of freezing fat cells like CoolSculpting, this light-based technology uses heat to destroy fat cells. The heat causes cells to rupture and release their fatty acids, mostly on trouble areas like the belly, flanks, back, and thighs. You’ll feel heat during the procedure, and mild swelling, redness, and bruising may occur. Laser lipolysis is used more for body contouring than for fat removal, as it also tightens the skin for more definition. Results last as long as you maintain healthy diet and exercise habits. We can all see the satisfying physical benefits of fat reduction, body contouring, and skin tightening, but what about the health benefits and psychological benefits? Lower body fat means lower risk of diabetes, lower risk of heart disease, and lower blood pressure. Having a body you’re proud of can lead to higher self-confidence and an overall improvement in your quality of life. Call your professional for a personalized plan. Remember, summer is a great time to start making positive changes! Sources for this article included: webmd.com, healthtalk.org, and plasticsurgery.org.

Stark Media Films Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story? Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful.

“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Colorado Train Trips Leaf-Peeping Routes

By Jackie Williams

If you haven’t decided on a fall foliage trip for this year, you still have time to go! If you are already booked, then here’s an idea for next year: a train ride through Colorado. Colorful Colorado offers some great fall foliage options by train. You’ll see terrain that’s still wild, you’ll travel to places you can’t drive to, and you’ll see all the stunning fall colors. There are several old railroad lines still open today that travel from the Front Range to the Western Slope. One of the most famous is the Georgetown Loop Railroad, one of the state’s first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this historic three-foot, narrow gauge railroad takes passengers for a 75-minute ride alongside Clear Creek, over Devil’s Gate High Bridge, and through a Rocky Mountain pathway. You can also book a silver mining tour in conjunction with the ride. There are specific “Fall Colors” excursions, some of which include guided hikes where you can follow the trails and wagon roads used by miners in the 1800s and take photos of the train passing by up close. The colorful aspens are simply gorgeous. A ride on the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad takes you to see the Continental Divide, the Arkansas River Valley, and beautiful views of two of the tallest peaks in Colorado. Ride through the San Isabel National Forest on this 2 and 1/2 hour adventure, where you can meet the engineer and tour the caboose and engine. You can even bring your own picnic lunch and well-behaved dog along with you. The wildflowers are delightfully colorful in the summer, but the autumn foliage is truly breathtaking. The best-known western railway lines on the Western Slope were founded by Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1880. Experience traveling on a historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive as you wind through the canyons and wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. You can choose a round-trip train ride or, if you want to take a different route on the way back, a combination of train and bus ride. Take advantage of the Durango Brew Train or Wines and Rails for some local tastings during the best leaf-peeping times in Colorado. The next option is the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Formerly the transcontinental link between Denver and Salt Lake in the 1880s, four trains would pass through the Royal Gorge each day. Reestablished in 1998, it has become a premier visitor’s attraction in Colorado, carrying over 100,000 guests each year. Picture yourself winding along the Arkansas River and being amazed by the granite cliffs of the Gorge. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad takes you between New Mexico and Colorado and on the highest 24

mountain pass reached by rail in the United States. Imagine the sheer rock faces, wildlife, and dramatic scenic landscapes as you pass by. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad takes you through the stunning La Veta Pass and offers the Fall Colors Explorer train, with staged photo locations in the Rockies and a route that takes you through canyons, meadows, and foothills. If you are looking for a longer and speedier train trip, there is Amtrak’s famous California Zephyr. This train runs coast to coast daily and has six stops in Colorado. It is said to be one of the most beautiful train rides you can take in the United States. As you now know, there are plenty of options to choose from for a fantastic fall foliage train ride through Colorado. Make sure to get the timing right, as peak colors vary each year. September tends to be best in the central and northern area, with October being the prime time for the southern part of the state. Your travel agent can help you nail down the best time to visit. Colorado’s railroads are historic, not only for their part in gold and silver mining but for some of the country’s most amazing views. Your travel agent can easily book you a package with flights and accommodations along the way so you can ride more than one train (since most are short day trips). Choose from a rustic riverside cabin or a charming bed and breakfast in the mountain towns; stay at a modern boutique hotel in the larger cities. The railroads and local outfitters offer side excursions for outdoor lovers who would enjoy hiking, biking, mining, fishing, camping, and photography in addition to the train ride. Sit back and relax as you enjoy views that only those who hiked to 14,000 feet high would get…but without the hard work. Your next leaf-peeping trip awaits you—all aboard! Good Looks

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Hair Loss Treatment Options

By Loretta McCollum

A stylish mane has been an integral part of self-image since ancient Greek and Roman times and still greatly impacts our modern self-image. Many women will acknowledge that a bad hair day can mean a crummy day overall. Luckily, many options exist to help preserve those beautiful tresses, even for the one in five women who will experience hair loss. Poor diet, sudden weight loss, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all contribute to hair loss. Those effects are often temporary. Genetics may also play a role, particularly when it comes to permanent hair loss. Eating a balanced diet and taking supplements such as biotin have been shown to be effective in slowing down the process. Avoiding tight hairstyles that pull hair from the root can also help. Fortunately, there are many ways to combat hair loss, including prescription medications. Your dermatologist or physician may prescribe a shampoo that promotes a healthy scalp, an oral corticosteroid, or hormone replacement therapy. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that has been around for over a decade and has produced favorable results in many patients. PRP therapy is a process whereby blood is drawn from the patient and placed into a centrifuge that isolates the platelets. A physician then injects the platelets into areas of the scalp where hair loss has occurred. The platelets stimulate collagen production and prolong the hair follicle’s growth cycle.

The process takes less than 30 minutes, and side effects are minimal. Treatments are usually administered monthly for 3 to 4 months, and then every 3 to 6 months after that. Results may be noticeable in as little as two months. A majority of patients experience hair regrowth of 30 to 40 percent. Laser therapy has also shown promise in combating hair loss. Laser treatments increase circulation and stimulate hair follicles, promoting growth. A bonus is that there are virtually no side effects. This treatment may also improve the strength and thickness of existing hair. Outcomes vary, but many patients experience promising results. Surgical procedures provide yet another alternative. Hair transplant surgery has been around since the 1950s, but techniques and technology have greatly improved over the years. Gone are the days of hair plugs that look like tiny bushes sprouting all over your head! Two widely-used hair transplant methods are follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUT involves removing a long, thin strip of hair from the back or side of the scalp. The wound

Sunlit Interiors with UV Protection

By Robyn V. Powell

Sunlight is a welcome guest in any home. Its natural warmth and vibrancy boost our mood, enhance interior design, and fill a space with positive energy. With so many benefits, it’s easy to forget the fact that sunlight has a downside—harmful UV rays that can damage the interiors of our homes. How can you maintain a beautiful, lightfilled home while protecting the interior from the damaging effects of sunlight? Read on to discover how the proper products can safeguard your furnishings as well as your home. Our skin needs protection from the sun, and many materials in our home need similar protection. Fabric, wood furnishings and flooring, rugs, leather, and artwork are particularly susceptible to fading. When exposed to sunlight for even relatively short periods of time, these materials can discolor and begin to break down. Most of the natural light that enters our homes streams through the windows. Many people think that glass is an effective shield against harmful sunlight, but clear glass panes allow up to 70 percent of UV rays to enter your home. The first line of defense against UV rays in the home is to mitigate the light that enters through windows. Replacing windows with low-E (low emissivity) windows is a good investment that provides several benefits. Low-E windows are designed primarily to keep heat transfer to a minimum and also contain a thin metallic layer that absorbs up to 85 percent of UV light. Installing these windows equates

to placing a protective shield around your home. If replacing your windows is not in your budget at the moment, a viable cost-saving alternative is applying UV films to your existing windows. These coating products, made of clear plastic or acrylic, are very effective at absorbing up to 99 percent of UV rays. UV films adhere to the surface of windows and are tinted in different colors with varying degrees of light-blocking ability. A major concern among homeowners who want to eliminate harmful rays is that UV-blocking windows will make their homes feel darker. Newer film products on the market are designed to provide maximum protection while still allowing lots of natural light into a space. It’s best to have window filming applied by a professional installer to ensure that the manufacturer stands behind warranties and that you get professional-level installation technique. Be sure to read the fine print when it comes to care and using the proper cleaning products.

Sun and leather are a particularly bad mix. Over time, sun exposure dries leather and the natural oils gradually evaporate, leading to cracks and stiffening. Conditioning leather twice a year with a leather-specific product can help breathe new life into leather furnishings. Wood furnishings and wood floors are classic choices, but sun damage can fade or discolor wood. Applying a good wood sealant protects wood floors and furnishings by providing a barrier to UV rays. Artwork in your home is also subject to fading. While oil paintings can withstand sunlight, watercolors quickly degrade. Do you have a collage of framed family photos? To preserve those precious memories, consider replacing the glass with museum-grade conservation glass or UV-blocking acrylic. Sunlight makes our homes look and feel more beautiful. Safeguarding your home against the harmful effects of sunlight allows you to enjoy all the beauty and warmth that natural sunlight provides while protecting and maintaining your home’s value when it comes time to sell. Understanding Psoriasis It’s More than Skin Deep!

By Leslie Byrne

The 8 million Americans with psoriasis well understand the negative physical and emotional effects of this disease. The condition causes itchy, scaly, sometimes painful patches of skin on the body and limbs. Although it is not contagious, it is often misunderstood by others. People with psoriasis are often diagnosed by a dermatologist because psoriasis appears on the skin. However, it is not simply a rash. Psoriasis is a long-term, chronic disease that does not have a cure. It can be painful, itchy, and very distracting, making it hard to concentrate and even disrupting sleep. Patients diagnosed with psoriasis should also seek care from a rheumatologist (a medical doctor who specializes in autoimmune conditions). A dermatologist will treat the affected skin, but a rheumatologist treats the underlying causes. Rheumatologists also treat the inflammation that can lead to joint pain and skin swelling. Although there is no cure for psoriasis, we do know a lot about the disease. We know that the condition goes through cycles and can flare up for a few weeks or even months. After a while, it subsides, and then the cycle repeats. It is considered to be an immune system disease, in which certain cells attack healthy skin cells by mistake. It causes the body to make new skin cells more frequently than is necessary. The extra skin cells pile up on the skin’s surface—those are the patches that are visible on the skin.

Psoriasis is found in people of all racial backgrounds, but it is most common in people with lighter skin. It is believed that 125 million people worldwide have psoriasis. The condition runs in families—if a parent, grandparent, or sibling has psoriasis, others in the family have an increased risk of developing the disease. Many people with psoriasis can be free of symptoms for months or even years until something triggers the immune system to overact. Common triggers include infections like strep throat or skin infections. Things that compromise the skin, like cold or dry weather leading to chapped skin, a skin injury like a cut or a bug bite, or even a severe sunburn, can get psoriasis riled up. Other triggers include smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, heavy alcohol use, and some medications. If someone stops using corticosteroids too quickly, that can be a trigger. Knowing what triggers your psoriasis, and what to do to avoid these triggers, is a good way to help prevent flare-ups. There are several types of psoriasis, but the most common type is plaque psoriasis—that’s the one that most of us are familiar with seeing. With plaque psoriasis, the plaques are

A rheumatologist is able to prescribe medication that addresses the immune side of the disease. People who are looking for natural ways to manage psoriasis may turn to a nutritionist or physical trainer to keep psoriasis under control. Other options include physical therapy or acupuncture. Finding the treatment that provides the most relief takes time, and sometimes more than one treatment is needed. Working with the right health professionals will increase your chances of finding the right treatments to decrease your flare-ups. Although psoriasis can be a lifelong condition, finding the right dermatologist and rheumatologist makes all the difference. Do not delay in seeking help! Sedona Soul Adventures

Transform Your Life or Your Relationship

By Angella A. Arndt

Do you wonder about your life’s purpose? Do you feel unfulfilled, even after achieving success? Are you in a relationship that needs help? Do you give too much, while ignoring your own needs? Many people experience these things and want to make a change but aren’t sure how to make it happen. It’s common to emphasize maintaining physical health through activities such as diet and exercise while overlooking the importance of emotional and spiritual health. Though physical health is indeed important, spiritual development plays an integral role in connecting with your inner voice and reaching your full potential. A spiritual retreat reconnects you with your heart and soul, allowing you to live a more connected and joyous life. Sedona Soul Adventures in Sedona, Arizona, was founded in 2002 and specializes in spiritual retreat experiences for individuals and couples. Founder Debra Stangl was a successful divorce attorney in Omaha who felt burned out after 20 years in the practice and wanted a deeper meaning in her life. She needed a break! She went to Sedona for “three days of peace and quiet” and instead experienced a life-changing event—she met with a healing practitioner and received the message, “You must leave your law practice now.” She returned to Omaha and, heeding

the message, spent six months closing her law practice. She visited Sedona several times over the next three years, attending workshops and continuing her sessions with amazing practitioners. In 2001, she received another message during a session: “Move to Sedona.” She asked why, but the only response was, “Just go.” She heeded the message and moved, still unsure of her next step. Several months later, she realized that her visits to Sedona and healing sessions were preparing her to offer spiritual

retreat experiences to others. She felt that the individual sessions she had had with practitioners provided her with more impactful experiences than the group workshops, so that’s how she decided to proceed with her own personalized retreats. “There is no one else in the world doing what we do,” Debra says. “We help people deal with the deepest things that are keeping them from living their best lives. Pretty much everyone who comes to us has a life-changing experience.” Group retreats offer one program for everyone, which may or may not meet your specific needs. Sedona Soul Adventures, on the other hand, provides a customized, individualized approach. Before you even arrive in Sedona, you will speak with an Angel Guide, who will talk to you about what’s going on in your life or your relationship and what you’d like to change or improve. Your retreat is custom-designed with sessions based on your specific needs. Sedona Soul Adventures works with dozens of talented practitioners from all around the world. These practitioners offer a wide array of services, including emotional healing, integrated breathing techniques, yoga, Reiki, massage, psychic and intuitive readings, vortex hikes, couples communication, and energy healing and clearing. Plan to spend three to five full days with Sedona Soul Adventures to maximize your experience. Debra says, ”The most important part of us is that people are taking this home with them, transforming their lives and their relationships. I find it interesting that I spent 20 years divorcing people and now I have spent over 17 years helping them stay together!”You will generally have three to five hours of sessions each day, with time to meditate, connect with energy, and experience the outdoors. Each retreat ends with an Intuitive Integration session. This session creates your ‘at home’ plan to ensure that you are integrating what you’ve learned at your retreat into your daily life.

Because of You - quarter.indd 1

Sedona Soul Adventures focuses on the healing process and spiritual work. There is no central retreat facility. Practitioners work out of their home offices and private healing spaces, which enables them to provide the most meaningful spiritual experiences. Your Angel Guide is happy to make lodging recommendations for you. Debra advises individuals and couples looking for a spiritual retreat to do some research on the places they are considering. “How do you feel when you’re talking to the person you’re talking to? How is the retreat structured? Ask for testimonials. Ask to speak to clients.” Her client philosophy is simple. “You can have the life or relationship you want—I know it!” she asserts. “Real, lasting change is possible, and it can bring you into lasting happiness.” Sedona Soul Adventures focuses on spiritual healing and expansion, but their approach is very grounded and provides practical, real-world answers to achieving a fantastic life and satisfying relationships. Debra feels so blessed to be able to make a difference in people’s lives. “Our slogan is ‘Transforming One Soul at a Time,’ and that’s what we’re doing,” she shares. Debra spends her days managing the business, writing, and working on weekly SoulAdventuresTV videos for YouTube. She also wrote the Amazon bestseller, “The Journey to Happy: How Embracing the Concept That ‘Nothing is Wrong’ Can Transform Your Life.” Go to SedonaRetreatGuide.com to download your complimentary copy of “The Sedona Guide to Spiritual Retreats” or “The Sedona Guide to Couples Retreats.” For more information, including testimonials, look up Sedona Soul Adventures online at SedonaSoulAdventures.com, on Facebook, or on YouTube. Midwest Pain Clinics

Working Magic on Chronic Pain

By Janette Calabro

For over 50 years, the team at Midwest Pain Clinics has diagnosed and treated back and neck pain, joint pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, injuries, and, most recently, the COVID-19 dilemma of lost smell and taste. These pain clinics consider a wide variety of treatments to get the best results for their patients. That includes their own surgery center, IV sedation for anxious patients, and a full staff of doctors and behavioral therapists. With Nebraska clinics in Omaha, Bellevue, and Columbus, as well as Missouri Valley and Red Oak clinics in Iowa, they accept all insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, and offer payment plans for those without insurance. Their newest location is within Think Whole Person Healthcare at 7100 West Center Road. Dr. Kevin Balter, M.D

There is also an independently owned pharmacy that rents from them on the premise. Dr. Kevin Balter says, “having a pharmacy in the facility allows us to closely collaborate, to improve communication and coordination to better help our patients get rapid approval for medications they need and to increase services, including custom-compounded topical pain medications.” Dr. Balter, a board-certified anesthesiologist, trained at John Hopkins, with a fellowship in pain management. Today, he uses that knowledge to train medical students and residents at

Creighton University School of Medicine and to help patients manage pain at Midwest Pain Clinics. “I think we’re special in how we approach pain,” he says. “That’s one of the reasons I chose Midwest Pain Clinic. We provide basically everything you need under one roof, saving our patients time and expense. Most importantly, this enables our pain management providers to coordinate care in the most efficient and effective way. Many of our patients have complex pain problems that require combining a number of treatments to get the best result.”

It’s important to note that Midwest Pain Clinics often treat chronic pain—that is, long-term pain that may respond best to something other than a pill. Potential treatments include physical therapy, medication management, behavioral and addiction therapy, injections, and minimally invasive procedures as alternatives to high-risk major surgeries. Referrals from traditional doctors are common when patients are looking for alternative treatments. For these patients, standard pain management has been ineffective or comes with too many side effects. Some over-the-counter pain medications can cause stomach ulcers or worse, resulting in serious problems. They may work well for acute or short-term pain but are not suitable for chronic pain. “Many patients cannot take medications like ibuprofen because of side effects. We frequently re-educate patients on what medications are safe to take,” Dr. Balter explains. “Our advice sometimes conflicts with conventional wisdom because many over-thecounter medications are for acute pain. Chronic pain is different.” In some cases, Dr. Balter explains, topical medications can help. Topical medications can be concentrated but low-dose because they don’t travel through the body as oral medications do. Topicals can get better results with fewer side effects. These medications can be created on an individual basis at the compounding pharmacy. Many of Dr. Balter’s patients have arthritis pain but are looking for an alternative to a knee or hip replacement. Since there are no guarantees that a joint replacement will solve the patient’s problems, Dr. Balter prefers to exhaust less invasive and safer modalities first. For example, lubricant injections are safer than steroid injections, and selective cauterization of joint sensory nerves (radiofrequency ablation) is safer than total joint replacement. He’s also very proud of a new research study for COVID-19 patients who have suffered from the lost senses of smell and

taste. “We’re very excited in the past months that we’ve started an outcome study,” Dr. Balter shares. Recovering from COVID-19 is cause for celebration, but it’s not always that simple. “Altered taste and smell can be a serious problem that interferes with the quality of life,” he points out. “If you do the math, 6 percent of the 60 percent of Americans who have had COVID may suffer from altered taste and smell. That’s 12 million people with chronic taste and smell problems!” “We have a treatment that, more often than not, restores taste and smell,” Dr. Balter continues. The treatment is an injection called a stellate ganglion nerve block. The stellate ganglion block has been used for almost a century to treat severe pain. “Over the years, we’ve learned it’s also useful to improve blood flow, reduce severe anxiety from PTSD, and restore taste and smell.” Dr. Balter continues, “Recently, we’ve learned it’s also very effective for stopping hot flashes in post-menopausal women. According to Dr. Balter, the injections can be less expensive than repeated hormone medication and can avoid side effects. Dr. Balter has witnessed successful treatment for a 35-yearold mother who was socially withdrawn from family meals after COVID-19 stole her sense of taste and smell, as well as a college student who suffered from severe brain fog and concentration issues. Both patients are gleefully back in the swing of life, cooking and studying. “With patients like that, I got motivated,” Dr. Balter says happily. “This was something very profound. We really need to get the word out!” To learn more about this and all the treatments available at Midwest Pain Clinics, visit midwestpainclinics.com or call 402243-6177. Market Indexes

The Tail That Wags the Dog

By George Morgan

Market indexes were developed to give investors an overview of the market’s day-by-day activity. The first index was the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which was the brainchild of Charles W. Dow. Created in 1897, it initially consisted of 12 railroad stocks and was published every afternoon in what would become The Wall Street Journal. Over time, the Dow expanded its coverage. Today, it contains a broad spectrum of 30 large American industrial companies. Currently, there are over 10,000 indexes available to the investing public, but most are variations of the big three: the Dow, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq. These three indexes have become household names and are prominently mentioned on many evening newscasts. A cursory examination of their charts will show them moving closely in lock-step; the main variation is the magnitude of their up and down motion. The S&P 500 tracks the performance of 500 of the largest companies listed on the United States stock exchanges. It is the most commonly followed equity index. The computation of the S&P 500 takes into account the total value of a company’s publicly traded stock. Thus, large companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, Berkshire Hathaway, and J.P. Morgan move the index. The top 10 companies in the index account for over 30 percent of the index’s performance. The Nasdaq index includes all stocks listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Like the S&P 500, its calculations give the largest companies the most weight. The composition of the Nasdaq is heavily weighted toward companies in the information and technology sectors. This includes Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta (previously known as Facebook), and Netflix. Until 1975, stock market indexes functioned solely as market indicators, designed to show interested parties what the market had done. That year, Jack Bogle invented and marketed the first index fund. An index fund is a mutual fund that mimics an index; that is, it buys and holds all the stocks in an index in the same proportion that they appear in the index. There is no effort to manipulate the holdings in order to improve the fund’s performance. Because they are passively managed, index funds avoid the costs associated with expensive portfolio managers and frequent trading. These cost savings are passed on to their shareholders in the form of increased performance. When first introduced, Bogle’s S&P 500 index fund was not exactly a barn burner. In its first five years, the fund only took in $10 million. There was talk at the higher echelon of Bogle’s fund company to cash out the investors and move on to more profitable ventures. Bogle, however, was persistent and would not be denied. Coinciding with Bogle’s invention of the index fund was a change in the tax code that allowed workers to save a portion of their wages in a tax-deferred account called 42

August 2022

a 401(k). A significant feature of these investment accounts is that the account owner is responsible for managing the account. Unfortunately, the vast majority of investors have no training or investment experience, which can lead to costly mistakes. Over time, the balances in these 401(k) accounts grew to significant amounts, and many inexperienced investors began searching for a simple way to make solid investment decisions. As more and more investors became aware of the features of index funds, their sales rose drastically. Today, there are over 10,000 index-style funds, holding investments of more than $10 trillion. When an investor purchases shares of an index fund, the fund company goes into the open market and buys shares of the companies in the index. One impact of this is that shares of index-listed companies get purchased when they may not otherwise have been traded. Thus, stocks are traded not on the basis of their fundamentals but, rather, on the investors’ outlook on the maket in general. The conventional wisdom is that index funds are passive investments and that when investors buy them, they will hold on to them forever. However, an examination of daily market trading activity shows that the funds of the big three are often among the most actively traded. Thus, there are indications that index funds, as well as individual stocks, can be market drivers. On May 5, 2017, Warren Buffett featured Jack Bogle during the Berkshire annual shareholders meeting. Buffett’s motivation was twofold. First, he wanted to honor Bogle for his contribution to the financial services industry. Second, he wanted to demonstrate to individual investors who manage their own accounts the role that index funds can play in the investment decision-making process. In Buffett’s words, “Forget the needle, buy the haystack.” Editor’s Note: George Morgan has five decades’ experience in all phases of the investment process. He is currently the Founder and Principal of Morgan Investor Education. His website is morganinvestoreducation.com. Follow Your Heart to Choose Your Pet Use Your Head to Choose Your Vet

By Jackie Byers

You wouldn’t adopt just any old pet, so why take your furry friend to any old vet? The veterinarian is the doctor for your pet, and the choice of vet should be taken seriously. It’s true that all vets meet some similar requirements, including a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM). They must also earn a state license to practice. Each state sets its own requirements, which generally include rigorous testing, background checks, regular continuing education, and annual renewal. Veterinary technicians are often important parts of the veterinary staff. A tech does not have a DVM but can help both the vet and your pet.

It makes sense to have a regular vet nearby. Start by asking local friends or neighbors where they take their pets. You can also search online to find animal clinics and animal hospitals in your area. Narrowing your search’s parameters should be based on the type of pet you have. Many vets specialize in certain types of animals. In urban areas, most vets accept household pets like dogs and cats; some even specialize in particular breeds of dog. In rural areas, large-animal vets are common. They may also treat small domestic animals. If you have an exotic pet, such as a hedgehog or gerbil, or a reptile, such as a lizard or snake, your best bet for finding a vet who can treat your pet knowledgeably is at a large clinic or animal hospital. When you find a vet who meets the basic requirements, make an appointment for you and your pet to visit. Make a list of questions to ask, including the vet’s education, specialties, and experience with your pet’s breed. If your pet has a pre-existing condition, ask whether the vet is experienced in treating it. Find out if the clinic performs in-office surgery. If so, who stays with pets overnight? What happens in an emergency, and what number should you call after hours? Vets work in many specialties, like human doctors, including dermatology, surgery, and ophthalmology.

When pets need specialty care, are outside specialists brought in to consult, or will your pet need to be seen elsewhere? Be ready to tell the vet about your pet’s personality and typical behaviors and eating habits. If your pet is new to your family, ask what exercise and equipment, including toys, the vet recommends. Ask to tour the facility, and check for cleanliness. If pets are kenneled on site, note the animals’ behavior. If they seem listless or upset, that is worth asking about. A veterinary office is filled with pets that might be hurt or anxious, so don’t expect it to be a particularly quiet place. On the other hand, even a rowdy office should seem under control and not chaotic. The vet should have a calm manner, listen to your questions, and provide thoughtful answers. Courtesy, attention to your concerns, and gentle care in handling your pet are hallmarks of a qualified veterinarian. You have many choices, so use your head and choose the vet that’s right for your pet. Sources for this article included: dhhs.ne.gov, iloveveterinary.com, thebark.com, and fearfreepets.com.

The Green Thumb

The Dog Days of Summer

Sprucing Up While Winding Down

By Linda Sutherland

Yes, we are coming up on August. If your garden is like mine, it may be looking like it has seen better days.“Better”in the sense that it is a little bedraggled and possibly even turning kind of brown instead of the lush colors of June and July. There are ways to keep this from happening and maybe even give your droopy flowers a boost. Read on! First and foremost, take a long, hard look at your garden. What does it need? What doesn’t it need? Your careful attention all season has hopefully paid off, and your watering and fertilizing have given your plants a good foundation. Regular irrigation is really important this time of year, so keep watering annuals, perennials, container plants, and vegetables. The August sun can really do a number on plants that are not watered frequently. You may need to water container plants every day—or even twice a day. I hope you got your mulch spread earlier this season! Adequate mulching is a great way to keep moisture where plants need it most. One thing you do not want to do in August is fertilize. Plants are under heat and drought stress, and adding fertilizer now is not a good idea. Hold off until fall. The same applies to lawns. Grass growth will remain slow because of high temperatures. Fertilizing in the August heat is a waste

44 Summer Manatee PSA.indd

1

August 2022

of nutrients because grass can’t take up nutrients that are applied when it’s excessively hot. The fertilizer might even end up running off the lawn, polluting the water. My biggest garden problem in the late summer is disease and pests. Oh, how they love to take over! If you see a plant that looks distressed, examine carefully under the leaves for signs of egg clusters and larvae. Aphids, squash bugs, and spider mites are common culprits, but try to identify whatever you find. The internet can be abundantly helpful with this process. You can physically remove them with a strong hose spray, but they’ll come back if you skip a day. There are various natural concoctions that you can spray diligently on your plants, but sometimes (I hate to admit this) nothing works but a strong pesticide. Every year, I go round and round with rose slugs as they try to annihilate every leaf on my rose

6/9/22 10:03 AM

www.womensedition.com

bushes. Now, I go after them early in the season and am pretty ruthless. Early treating helps guarantee that they are not a problem in the later, lazy days of summer. This is also time to look out for blackspot. Next on your list should be checking to see if any of your perennials need to be divided. This is the time! Make sure to keep them very well hydrated during the division process. Never start digging until you have a plan for where they’ll go—or even a prepared plot at the ready! August is the time to add some fall color. Asters and mums should be everywhere, and now is the time to plant them to get the most drama in the fall. This is also the best time to plant any trees or shrubs you would like to add to your collection. Keep up the deadheading on everything that needs it. As far as vegetable gardens go, this is prime time for harvest and to see what’s what. You want to spruce things up to keep them from getting the summer blues. August is also the time to think about what bulbs you want to plant in the fall. Fall bulbs will be out already, and it pays to buy or order them early. Before you do, peruse your garden in its summer bloom so you know where you can place bulbs in October…remembering that spring bulbs are under there somewhere. You might even make a diagram! Additionally, this is the best time to refresh your garden mulch. Yes, I know it is a big expense, but it’s so worth it. Mulch keeps the weeds out and the moisture in. If you see weeds sneaking through the mulch, keep taking them down. There is no time like August to collect ripened seeds from your spent flowers and store them for next year. I like to take some for myself and my gardening friends and leave some seeds for the birds. As a bonus, some types of spent flowers can look really striking in a winter snow landscape. You have worked really hard to enjoy your beautiful gardens. Once the day is over and your gardens have been watered, don’t forget to pour yourself a cool drink, as well, and revel in the beauty you’ve created this season.

Advances in Cataract Surgery See Clearly Again!

By Linda Barnes

After wearing glasses or contact lenses for over 60 years, I experienced a dramatic improvement in my vision as a result of cataract surgery. Free at last from daily hassling with corrective lenses! Surgery was so convenient, with little discomfort and minimal down time. My cataracts had developed very slowly over the years, adding to my existing vision problems, until I began to feel insecure about driving safely. Although some younger people, even children, can develop the clouding of the eye’s lens that is known as cataracts, the condition is most often due to aging. Signs include cloudy or blurred vision, poor night vision, trouble with light glare, colors losing their vibrancy, and needing more light to read. In many cases, surgery is not urgently needed. In the long term, if cataracts are untreated, vision is lost. When my optometrist first noticed some mild cataract formation during my annual exam, I was surprised because I hadn’t noticed any vision changes. I was also surprised because my parents were having cataract surgery! I was only in my fifties and was alarmed at the prospect of imminent surgery. However, my cataracts progressed very slowly, as is often the case with my common type. Most cataracts, referred to as nuclear sclerotic, begin in the center of the natural clear lens of the eye and progress very slowly to the outer edges. Other types include cortical cataracts, which are often associated with diabetes, and

sub-capsular cataracts, which typically affect night vision first and may be associated with diabetes or steroid use. My doctor asked, “Do you wear sunglasses outside?” I was an avid golfer and, truthfully, didn’t wear sunglasses in those days. Excessive UV exposure increases the risk of cataracts, as do diabetes, genetics, high blood pressure, excessive alcohol use, long-term steroid use, and smoking. The cure for cataracts is surgery. The procedure is quite safe and is usually done on an outpatient basis. Only ophthalmologists perform this surgery, removing the cloudy lens tissue and inserting a synthetic lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). My ophthalmologist and I discussed the possibility of correcting my astigmatism during the surgery. Since I had been wearing “mono-vision” contact lenses for many years, an IOL could correct for near vision in one eye and correct for distance in the other. In the past, IOLs corrected for distance vision only, so reading glasses were needed after surgery. My husband found

Tough Decisions? Decisions by Default

“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” —Proverb

How many of us have looked back on our lives and realized that we failed to take advantage of some great advice? Maybe it was a dear friend who pulled you aside and tried to convince you to leave a job you didn’t love. Your friend might have even given you a referral to a new company that was looking for people with your skills. Ten years later, some of us are still in that first job, and our family and friends have gotten really tired of hearing us complain about it. Many of them have moved on. “You and only you are responsible for your life and choices and decisions.” —Robert T. Kiyosaki

I’m the first to admit that making a tough decision is not the most comfortable thing we have to do as human beings on this planet. So often, we make our decisions by default. After all, if we simply stay in the job, we have made the decision to stay. A decision by default is a decision, to be sure, but it’s not a positive way to create the life we love and want! “Once you make a decision, the Universe conspires to make it happen.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

August 2022

By Janet Van deWalle

The decision is the toughest part of change. Taking the time to make that decision, to make that change, is the first step. How do we know it’s time? For me, it’s typically an epiphany…an “a-ha!” moment when I realize that something’s gotta give. I am one of those humans who has had a tendency to drag my feet and sweep things under the carpet. I have made a lot of my decisions by default. I am learning to be stronger. I am learning to be more straightforward. I am learning that positive change is a great thing. “Change, like healing, takes time.” —Veronica Roth

So how do we know which way to go? Should we stay or should we go? Of course, we should make a list of pros and cons. Of course, we should research possibilities. Of course, we should determine, to the best of our ability, whether we will be happy living with the consequences of our decision. The final piece, however, is to follow our gut. Taking time to imagine our new life is a great way to feel our way through a difficult decision. I am a firm believer that our bodies can help us navigate any decision. The key is to know our bodies and know whether that gut feeling is anxiety or excitement. Frankly, they feel very similar. Talk to yourself. Listen to your gut. Begin to deliberately create…today! “Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.” —Keri Russell

Kids Comments

Pre-Program Your Brain Preview, Read, Review, Know!

School will be starting soon—if it hasn’t already! As a former classroom teacher, I’d like to pass along some tips to students (and their parents) on getting through homework. Parents, do you remember back in the ’90s, when computers used floppy disks? (If you don’t, Grandma or Grandpa can explain.) Floppies had to be formatted before they could be used…it’s kind of like downloading an app before you can do something on your phone. In my opinion, formatting your brain so it’s ready to accept information is one of the primary skills we should teach kids. Preview. Read. Review. Know! Previewing means to look at something before you get started. When you get a textbook, flip through it; see how it’s organized. The table of contents provides an outline of the information. Unit headings, chapter titles, section names, and the glossary include other information designed to help the student understand. Previewing—that is, looking at the contents of the text before using it—not only alerts you to what you will learn but also brings to mind information you may already know on the subject. When you’re given an assignment, preview those pages to get an idea of what information you’ll cover. Pay attention to headings, study questions, vocabulary, and any study sheet included…this is what you’ll be responsible for knowing. It’s like dipping your toe in the water before you jump in…you want to know what to expect.

By Marge Shoemaker

Next, read the assignment. If you take notes, make them brief, just a few words or phrases. It’s not necessary to rewrite the section! Headings and study questions are your guides. Review the previous assignment to remind your brain what was covered. Textbooks are generally organized to build on previous information. Review your notes periodically to make sure you’re making the connections. Take careful notes when the teacher gives lectures, explains things, or draws diagrams. Recopy your notes while the information’s still fresh in your mind. I know my handwriting wasn’t always too legible a few days later. (It still isn’t.) When test time comes along, review any work you’ve completed. Make sure you understand what you’ve covered. Accumulated worksheets and notes come in handy here. One way of reviewing material is to design a diagram or make an outline of main points from memory. Then, compare your outline or diagram with information from the table of contents. If my assessment is close, I know what I have learned…and what I need to brush up on. A similar routine can be used when taking any standardized test. Preview the question and answer choices first. Eliminate any choice that is obviously wrong or contains absolutes (words like all, always, or never). Scan the information for words or phrases similar to one of the remaining choices. There’s your answer! Remember: Preview. Read. Review. Know!

Tire Safety

A Driving Force

By Linda Sutherland

It’s time to shop for tires. “Yippee!” said no one, ever. Old, worn-out tires can affect the quality of your ride as well as your gas mileage. You may notice increased noise, more vibration, and reduced gripping on the road—that’s your tires, clamoring to be replaced. For maximum vehicle safety, it’s important to know what kind of tires your vehicle needs as well as when to repair or replace them. Most vehicles come standard with “all season” tires. These are what the name implies—well-balanced tires that can handle a wide variety of road conditions, including dry, wet, and snowy roads. This is the only type of tire that many drivers will ever need. Some terrains and locales call for what are known as “snow tires.” These tires have more significant tread and provide optimum grip during slippery road conditions. Snow tires are great to have if you live in an area that regularly endures ice and snow. They can be an advantage in dangerous weather—especially if you live on a steep hill! Keep in mind that snow tires, like winter, don’t have to be a year-round situation. You can switch out your tires from summer to winter as needed. Those of us with sports cars may also be interested in “summer tires.” These are very sensitive to temperature. Tire manufacturers recommend that these only be used at temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. As the spot where the rubber meets the road, tires are subject to a lot of wear and tear. Eventually, they’ll need to be replaced. How long should you expect them to last, and how will you know when it’s time to replace them? The general consensus is that tires should be replaced approximately every six years, but that’s based on driving an average of 10,000 to 12,500 miles per year. That number may well fluctuate, especially during a year when gas costs five bucks a gallon! It’s better to base your decision on how many total miles you’ve driven—experts recommend you drive no more than 60,000 to 75,000 miles before replacing your tires. If you’re wondering whether your tires are getting too worn, you can check the tread yourself with the tried-andtrue penny test. Stick a penny into the tread of your tire, with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If the coin goes in deep enough that you can’t see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tire still has sufficient tread. If you can see the top of his head or above it, it’s time to replace the tire. For a more precise measurement, use an official tread depth indicator. These are easily found at any auto parts store or even 52

August 2022

the automotive department of a hardware or big box store. In addition to wear and tear, sudden puncture wounds from something like a nail can bring a tire down. If the puncture is in the tread area and is 1/4 inch or smaller in diameter, the tire can probably be repaired. If the nail is in the sidewall or shoulder of the tire, don’t even think about it—no repair can fix that safely! Remember, sealants or inflators are only meant as a temporary fix to tide you over while you get to a mechanic; they should not be used as a long-term repair. I always wonder: If I replace one tire, do I have to replace all four? Vehicle manufacturers may recommend that you replace all four tires at once. The main reason for this is that tires at different stages of wear don’t spin at the same rate. This is especially important if your vehicle has all-wheel drive. Many cars, however, have front-wheel drive. For these vehicles, you can often get away with replacing just two of the tires at a time. If you do this, the new tires should be placed on the rear wheels and the older tires should go in the front. In rare cases, like a large puncture in a relatively new tire, you can get away with replacing just the ruined tire. There are a few steps you can take to extend the life of your tires. Keep them inflated at the correct air pressure. (You should check this monthly with a tire pressure gauge; your mechanic can show you how.) Have your tires rotated every 5,000 miles to ensure even wear and tear. Have the alignment checked twice a year to keep everything in proper balance. You might also consider having your tires filled with nitrogen. This maintains air pressure longer, resulting in better fuel economy and longer tire life. Respect your tires! They’re your driving force. Sources for this article included: caranddriver.com, consumerreports.org, popularmechanics.com, and tirerack.com.

Outdoor Transformations Creating Value, One Deck at a Time

By Linda Sutherland

One of the best investments you can make to increase the value of your home is a deck. For me, the deck is both a private sanctuary to enjoy nature and a place to entertain and enjoy family and friends. If you want to learn everything about how a high-quality, low-maintenance deck can improve your quality of life, you should meet Ken Witthaus, the owner and founder of Outdoor Transformations. He has been in business for four years now and enjoys bringing a new dimension and beauty to his client’s homes. Ken has always been interested in carpentry and construction. After 25 years working in another field, he made the bold move to start his own business—Outdoor Transformations. When asked if he has any sage advice for people thinking about going into business for themselves, he smiles and replies, “It’s important to understand what you’re good at. Know exactly what it is you want to do and then be the very best at it.” Ken’s years of experience in mechanical contracting and consulting engineering have certainly prepared him for this part of his life’s journey, but it’s not just about experience, he points out. “Approach every job with the same enthusiasm as your very first job.” Ken’s son, Jared, is part of this family business; together, they work to make people’s dreams of beautiful outdoor spaces into reality. New clients who get in touch with Ken at Outdoor Transformations will have an initial meeting to discuss their goals for the project. Ken gets to know his clients by determining what their deck’s purpose and function would be, what the best location would be, what type of deck lighting might be appropriate, and what the budget is. Ken will want to know how much time you plan to spend on the deck, what type of entertaining you do, and how you want to come and go from the deck. He will go over materials (composite versus wood), types of railings (metal versus wood), and potential built-ins like seating, gates, and deck storage. By getting to know your lifestyle, Ken can plan a deck that will meet your needs and wants. Yes, there are a lot of choices, but what fun to start a plan for your outdoor living space! The shape and size of your deck are things you want to consider, as well as getting the right view. “Clients should consider the view both from the future deck and from inside the house,” Ken says. We should also pay close

Ken Witthaus,

attention to vertical elements when designing a Owner deck, he continues, because “the railing, skirting, and overhead structures can make the most visual impact.” For example, if you are definitely a shade person and want to avoid the sun, you will want to consider a roof or pergola. Who doesn’t love a pergola? Consider, however, how a vertical element on the deck will impact the view from the windows inside your home. Ken can help you visualize the details of your space. Outdoor Transformations builds decks for every family’s busy life. If your family is not into maintaining a deck, composite decking is probably the answer for you. It may cost a bit more, but it never needs to be sealed or stained. Composite is durable and long-lasting—a great alternative to wood decking. However, if you love the traditional look of wood decking and you like the idea of being able to stain it different colors, wood decking is probably for you. Well-designed deck lighting can add character and beauty to the deck, transporting you away from the hustle and bustle of life into your very own oasis. There are many options for deck lighting these days. According to Ken, solar lighting choices have come a very long way. Of course, there is always traditional lighting with LED lights. You can go traditional or modern or somewhere in between. Lighting incorporated into the stairs is both beautiful and practical. Safety is always an important factor when Ken is designing a deck. At Outdoor Transformations, these custom deck builders do it right! Give Ken a call today at 402-740-9720 for an initial consultation or send him an email message at ken@outdoor-transformations.com. While the ownership has changed, the staff, product lines, and—most importantly—the philosophy of the business has remained intact. This specialty store caters to those who believe that outdoor living spaces are as important as indoor living spaces. The staff prides themselves on exceptional sales work, exemplary installation and service, and solid relationships with vendors. The staff will install and service many items that others cannot or will not. “We deliver, assemble, and service our products within a 60-mile radius of our store,” Kelly shares. Walking into the store, you will see one of the largest selections of year-round casual furniture, grills, smokers, fire pits—and experienced staff members who can guide you to the products that best fit your style of outdoor living. More than half of the spacious showroom is devoted to patio and pool furniture. Outdoor Kitchen & Patio displays furniture from names like Homecrest, Tropitone, Castelle, Ebel, and Gensun. These pieces have many fabric choices and styles that would look good around a new pool, garden, or porch. Legal Ease

Finding the Right Attorney

By Loretta McCollum

At some point in life, many of us will find ourselves in need of legal services. There are a number of circumstances in which the expertise of a good attorney will be required, including setting up a business, drafting a will, navigating a real estate transaction, dealing with a family issue, or handling a criminal or civil matter. Finding the right attorney can seem like an overwhelming process, especially if you’ve never done it before. Think of it like any other major consumer purchase—the attorney is selling a service that you’re looking to buy. The first step is to figure out what type of issue you’re facing. There are many branches of law, and attorneys often have specific areas of practice. You wouldn’t ask a dermatologist to treat your heart condition, and you don’t want a real estate lawyer to handle a child custody matter. If you’re not sure where to begin, consult a general practice law firm for guidance. Your state bar association is also a good resource. You can search attorneys in your state by location and field of expertise. Family law deals with legal issues related to familial relationships, including adoption, divorce, child custody, and paternity issues. Family law also involves cases of physical and emotional abuse. Domestic abuse is not limited to partner or spousal relationships; it also includes child abuse and elder abuse. Some family attorneys are also certified elder law specialists, meaning that they have received specific training in elder law issues and have practiced in that field. Real estate law, also referred to as real property law, governs buying, using, and selling land. A real estate attorney can advise you on what can and cannot be done with the property in question. They can also assist with zoning laws, rentals, and real estate taxes. If you’re starting a new business, forming a corporation, or dissolving a corporate partnership, you need a corporation law specialist. Corporation (or business) law governs the rights and responsibilities of companies and organizations. It deals with rules and regulations that control the creation and operation of corporations. It encompasses commercial and contract law, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, and securities. Closely related to corporate law is franchise law. This refers to the body of laws governing the creation, operation, and ending of franchise relationships. A franchise attorney is knowledgeable about both state and federal franchise laws and provides guidance on the legal aspects of using another company’s trademark, copyright, and other aspects of brand identity. They also handle dispute resolution. Has the state of the economy made you feel as if your business or personal debt is overwhelming? If so, you 56

August 2022

should seek counsel from a bankruptcy attorney. They can assist you in gathering your income statements, asset valuation, tax returns, and debt information. From there, they can advise you as to whether a debt reconsolidation or bankruptcy filing would be your best option. If bankruptcy is recommended, your attorney will determine which type of bankruptcy to file. They will then file the paperwork on your behalf and help navigate the court system to negotiate the best possible outcome for your case. If you haven’t made out your will, or if you would like to set up a trust fund, seek the advice of an estate attorney who specializes in estate planning. They assist clients in drafting and implementing wills and trusts. They counsel their clients on how to reduce estate taxes and probate fees. Estate attorneys also handle retirement plans and life insurance policies, and they draft power of attorney documents. Are you owed money? Have you suffered an injury and want compensation? Did you enter into a contract that the other party has breached? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a civil litigator can help. These attorneys can represent either the party being sued or the party bringing the lawsuit. If you have been accused of a crime, you should seek a criminal attorney. A key difference between civil and criminal law is the standard of proof. In a criminal case, the standard is beyond a reasonable doubt. In civil cases, it’s by a preponderance of the evidence; in other words, more likely than not. After you determine which type of attorney you need, the next step is to schedule a consultation. Most attorneys offer a free initial consultation. Come with a list of questions, and make sure you understand their fee structure. Your attorney should also be a good fit with your personality. Navigating legal waters can be choppy; with the right attorney, you increase your chances of smooth sailing. Sources for this article included: americanbar.org, legalzoom.com, and enjuris.com.

HVAC Maintenance and Upgrades Don’t Get Caught in the Heat!

By Anne Yankus

One thing’s for sure—this season has been hard on HVAC systems. With the weather this summer, your A/C unit has probably barely gotten a break since May. Now that the cooler temperatures of fall are on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to get your HVAC checked out. HVAC maintenance probably isn’t regularly on your to-do list, but it should be. Keeping up with preventative maintenance can prevent costly breakdowns, reduce your energy bills, extend the life of your system, and even improve your home’s air quality (which is a boon when the pollen count starts to climb). While there are a few small check-ups you can do yourself, you should schedule an annual maintenance visit from a professional. Spring and fall are the best times to make an appointment; contractors can get very busy in summer and winter with last-minute breakdowns and emergency repairs. A professional HVAC check-up should include checking thermostat settings, tightening all electrical connections, lubricating all moving parts, inspecting the condensate drain, and checking system controls. For your cooling check-up, it will also include cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils, checking the central A/C’s refrigerant level, and cleaning and adjusting blower components. Heating check-ups will also include a check on all gas or oil connections, gas pressure,

burner combustion, and heat exchanger. The items you may choose to handle yourself include checking the batteries in your thermostat or other control panels, checking your unit for leaks and your drains for blockages, and changing your filter. HVAC filters should generally be changed every three to six months; thinner filters (one inch) need to be changed more often than thicker filters (three inches or larger). If you’re greeted with a musty smell the first time you turn on your heating or cooling system, or if you notice an excess of dust on your vents, it’s definitely time to change your filter. If your HVAC pro notes something about your system that isn’t up to code anymore or you’re just not seeing the efficiency and performance you want, it may be time to look at replacing it with a newer unit. New HVAC high-efficiency systems are continuing to make strides with sustainable technology, making newer systems easier on both the environment and your wallet. There’s also a trend toward smart tech and

Cosmetic Dentistry Smile With Pride!

By Angella Arndt

Do you have healthy teeth that make you want to share your smile, or do you have teeth that limit your desire to display them? If you would like to improve the appearance of your smile, consult a cosmetic dentist. These dental specialists use various procedures to improve the color, size, shape, or alignment of teeth. Positive Perspective

A Handful of Friends

By Janet Van deWalle

Quality, Not Quantity

The other day, I was talking with a wise woman about friendship. I was lamenting the fact that true friendships seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. We may have 1156 “friends” on Facebook…but I’m not talking about that kind of friend. “I have your back. I didn’t mean only when it’s easy. All the time.” —Veronica Roth This wise woman pointed out to me all the true friends that I am blessed to have in my life. She started with my husband, Manny, who she knows is my best friend. Having a spouse who is your best friend is a rarity and a gift, she said. She then explained that, as we mature, our list of friends often begins to diminish. Some of it has to do with geography. Perhaps they move to another state and it gets more difficult to keep in touch. Often, though, we find that we are simply no longer a “match” to one another.

“If it feels good, it’s good. If it feels bad, it’s bad.” —Abraham/Hicks I then had a flashback to my father, Big Al. Big Al was one of the friendliest people you would ever meet. When he passed away in the early ’90s, he had a small handful of true friends. They were very close. They were always there when any of them needed something. They told each other the truth, even when it was painful. That’s the kind of friend I want! “A true friend accepts who you are but also helps you become who you should be.” —Unknown

“If you’re on the growth and development path, you’re going to outgrow people.” —Jayson Gaddis

I have now come to the conclusion that I am very blessed to have a handful of people in my life who I can trust to tell me the truth. Friends have my back and know that I have theirs. Friends I can be totally honest with and know they feel the same way about me. These are my true friends, and I am so very fortunate to have as many of them as I do! Life is great!

With time and wisdom, many of us take a deeper look into who we are, what we believe, and what energy we want to put out there. When this happens, we may realize that when we spend time around certain friends, we walk away not feeling all that great.

“An acquaintance merely enjoys your company; a fairweather companion flatters when all is well; a true friend has your best interests at heart and the pluck to tell you what you need to hear.” —E.A. Bucchianeri
