Chillin’

Points of Interest

Happy August, all! I hope you have been able to do some “chillin’” these last few months. It’s been a hot one! I love this kind of weather. I know it’s hot, but the great news is that as the sun goes down, more often than not, a slight breeze comes our way. Many nights, my husband and I have found ourselves sitting on our deck. We share a glass of wine and catch up on our day. Manny and I do more talking with each other than anyone I know. We have our conversations in the morning and then catch up at day’s end. I so love this. This month, on August 25th, Manny and I will celebrate our two-year wedding anniversary. We got married on the beach, at sunset, at Hanalei Bay in Kauai, Hawaii, seven years after we met. My brother Tom, and his wife, Kristi, stood up for us. The four of us got together for dinner last week and found ourselves reminiscing about the fabulous experiences we had in Hawaii. I realized during that conversation that I don’t even think of it as a “vacation.” It was so much more! It started with the first day we were there. Manny woke me up to watch the sunrise. Unbelievably fantastic. Then we got married! It was like something out of a fairy tale. We went on a helicopter ride and landed where the waterfall in Jurassic Park was filmed. We went to a luau that was so much fun. We took a sunset cruise on the Na Pali Coast and saw the most beautiful sunset ever. I can’t wait until we go back! I have stopped calling it a vacation and now refer to it as the adventure of a lifetime! Being married to Manny has continued that adventure. Our goal is to have a healthy relationship, which requires some serious work on a daily basis. We constantly work on our communication, our mutual respect, and…let’s not forget…having fun and romance in our lives with one another! Happy anniversary, Manny. I love you! August is also a big birthday month in our family. My son Adam will be 31 on August 22nd. My grand-daughter McKenna turns 10 on August 23rd. Happy birthday to both of you! I hope that you have had the opportunity to reconnect with family and friends over the last few months. I don’t know about you, but we are grabbing every opportunity to join up with family and friends and make up for lost time. I hope you are, too. We will talk next month…go out and enjoy…and chill!

Form into balls and place into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Drain any fat. Mix together 1 can of cream of chicken soup, 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese, 1/3 cup of half-and-half, 1/4 cup of water, and several shakes of hot sauce. Pour the sauce over the meatballs. Add 4 room-temperature eggs and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla. Blend well. Add 1 cup of cream and mix until blended. Take 1 and 1/2 cups of batter and stir in 2 squares of melted and cooled unsweetened chocolate. Pour half of the plain batter into the springform pan, followed by half of the chocolate batter, and repeat. Use a sharp knife to create a marble effect in the batter. Bake at 325 degrees for 60–70 minutes, until the center appears set. (Top crack is normal.) Cool. Remove sides of pan. Refrigerate.

Preview of Fall Transitions Keepin’ It Cozy!

By Holly Bell

We have rebounded from a year of staying home in our jammies and loungewear, and we are now happy to get out and go places again, feeling good about ourselves and about the way we dress. Summer is in full swing, but the fashion universe always moves forward at a rapid pace, so it’s already time to look ahead to fall! Transitioning from season to season is one of the perks of living in the Midwest. It gives us more chances to change up our look, and we fashionistas love nothing more than variety! Everyone enjoys comfortable clothing choices, but we can embrace fashion and still keep comfort the key. Designers have created plush, oversized looks with silhouettes that are tapered to bring comfort along with polish. Keepin’ it cozy is the fall outlook! Denim is a no-brainer for fall. This year, we will have so many opportunities to expand our denim wardrobe. Jeans are now more loose-fitting, high-waisted, and comfortable. For those who still love the sleek profile of the skinny jean, just try on a straight leg or boot cut again— you’ll remember why you loved it!

Creativity has expanded the standard denim jacket into many iterations. Longer, looser jackets with fun embellishments and even tie-dyed looks are some of the many choices. Allover, head-to-toe denim is a great fall look, as are denim shirts with ruffles, ombre dyes, and printed and patchwork jackets. This is going to be a fun denim year! Although I do love the classic blue denim, we don’t have to stick to that! Gray, black, and even colored denim are interesting alternative choices. There are so many choices in washes, too, from faded to dark wash and everything in between. Remember the acid-washed denim of the 1980s? You’ll see it again this year, and why not? It’s a little extra fun thrown in for good measure. Sweaters are always a welcome cool weather staple. This fall, get ready for super soft knits, creative color blocking, and the return of the sweater vest and the twinset cardigan. Fall is time for layers, and it’s a great time to remember the rule for a put-together look: 10

August 2021

www.womensedition.com

Add a third piece. The sweater vest is a perfect example of how to transform an everyday jeans-and-white-shirt look to another level by adding that third piece. Other ideas include adding a blazer, a cardigan, or simply a great accessory such as a tailored leather belt. The cropped cardigan is a new silhouette that creates all sorts of opportunities for layered looks. White was the focus color for summer. This continues into fall with winter white tones in sweaters. Always fashionable and sharp, the classic combo of black and white will be front and center with fabulous designs that focus on bold contrast. As ever, cable knit sweaters are a staple for fall—they’re warm, comfortable, and always on trend. This year, dress yourself in full-length cable knits. From dresses to matching sets, cable knits will be on the forefront. Watch for puff sleeves this fall, as this trend is still with us, along with the slightly padded shoulder. Give the bold shoulder a try! These are great fashion looks that are flattering to all figures. Keep in mind that bringing the shoulder up narrows the torso, so look for something that elevates the shoulder line. You will be the life of any party this fall (and winter) with sparkle in the form of sequins, sequins, and more sequins. Party clothes will have an opulent look that combines the shiny draping of the 1920s with the sparkle and flash of the 1980s. Vintage silhouettes from the 1920s era are also so flattering and feminine. It’s time for us ladies to send a message that it’s our time to shine. The future is looking bright! As optimism is mounting this year, so are the color palettes of fall. There will always be room for the occasional neutral in every wardrobe, but keep an eye out for the fully saturated colors of fall that are coming our way. Expect to see lots of vibrancy in a rainbow of cobalt blue to electric yellow to the hottest of pinks. How do you wear a vibrant color for maximum impact? Head to toe, of course! For the more conservative, pairing bright colors with neutrals or black is always a great choice. The most daring of fashionistas are mixing bold with bold, like cobalt blue with marigold orange, for fresh and exciting new looks. After a year of challenges, we look forward to a vibrant fall, with beautiful colors and patterns that create a warm, comforting message. Find something to bring out the beautiful, confident woman in you!

Midwest Pain Clinics Patient-Centered Pain Management

By Angella A. Arndt

Do you suffer from pain that interferes with your daily activities? According to a 2019 CDC survey, approximately 20 percent of adults in the United States have chronic pain. Even if the cause of the pain can’t be fully cured, many cases of chronic pain can be successfully managed. For local expertise in pain management, reach out to the team at Midwest Pain Clinics. Pain management is the field of medicine focusing on the diagnosis and management of pain. This approach strives to reduce pain both physically and emotionally by seeking alternatives to high-risk surgeries and long-term use of addictive drugs. “We try to identify the underlying cause of pain,” says Dr. Kevin Balter, a physician at Midwest Pain Clinics, “but if we can’t figure it out, we don’t let that get in the way of providing appropriate care.” For example, until recently, fibromyalgia wasn’t believed to be an actual condition by many physicians because it was not well understood. The diagnosis gained credibility once the FDA approved several drugs to reduce fibromyalgia pain, and patients can now receive effective treatment for this condition. Dr. Balter has over 20 years of experience in interventional pain management. He trained at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Balter is board-certified in both pain management and anesthesiology. This fall, he will be teaching pain management to medical students and residents at Creighton. Dr. Balter’s inspiration to enter the field of pain management came from his aunt, who had Parkinson’s disease. At the time, pain was not recognized as a symptom of Parkinson’s, and physicians did not take his aunt’s reports of pain seriously. Dr. Balter was in medical school at the time, and he became an advocate for his aunt, asking questions and searching for a physician who could help. Finally, he found a pain management physician whose treatment changed her life. “My aunt was able to live out the remainder of her life essentially pain-free, which dramatically improved her quality of life.” Midwest Pain Clinics has an extensive team, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and physical therapists. They plan to add behavioral therapy services soon. In addition, the surgery center brings the opportunity to provide a broad spectrum of injections and surgical procedures. “This flexibility helps us meet our patients’ needs,” Dr. Balter notes, “because the bureaucracy of larger medical institutions doesn’t constrain us.” For example, anxious patients undergoing a procedure may receive IV sedation, even if their insurance company won’t cover it. The clinic accepts all forms of insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid. Payment plans are also available for patients with no insurance or with high deductibles. The team treats a wide variety of pain, including head12

August 2021

ache and migraine pain, back pain, fibromyalgia pain, joint pain, diabetic neuropathy, and Kevin-Balter, M.D arthritic pain. “We offer just about everything needed for pain management care, including medication management, physical therapy, and the surgery center,” Dr. Balter says. “It’s often difficult for patients to travel around town for appointments with different providers. By offering all services required under one roof, we can have a coordinated team approach to care and save patients time and expense while achieving good outcomes.” The team approach is essential because many patients are referred for complex problems that require a combination of treatments. They see many patients with arthritis pain in the neck, low back, hips, and knees. “Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an effective treatment for arthritis, even when narcotics, chiropractic, physical therapy, and spine surgery have failed.” RFA is a minimally invasive procedure in which a needle is inserted toward target nerves. A radio wave produces an electrical current that heats a small area of nerve tissue, which decreases pain signals. “RFA can also be a helpful alternative to joint replacement surgery.” Why should someone choose Midwest Pain Clinics? “We take pain complaints seriously,” Dr. Balter asserts. “We try to treat the underlying problem by finding solutions other than surgery. Our board-certified physicians look for alternative methods of pain control, such as a combination of modalities to treat pain, before prescribing narcotics.” “We help a lot of patients who have lost confidence in the health care system,” Dr. Balter concludes. “Some of these patients have had pain for 20 years without finding an answer and may be angry and hostile when they first visit our office. Our biggest reward is when these same patients start to feel better, come in smiling, and thank us for helping them.” Midwest Pain Clinics is located at 825 North 90th Street in Omaha, with additional locations in Bellevue and Columbus, Nebraska; Missouri Valley and Red Oak, Iowa; and Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. Call them at 402-391-7246 or find them online at midwestpainclinics.com.

A Woman’s Work

Family Entertainment It’s Reunion Season!

By Sharon Knierim

Here we are again—in August. If you haven’t already attended (or avoided) an annual family reunion this year, don’t worry. You’ll probably be offered more chances as August finishes up and September rolls around. For many of us, family reunions can be painful reminders of embarrassing childhood memories or the loss of loved ones. But if you think through what a family reunion really means, you’ll see that there’s no need to avoid your annual opportunity to see these people. A family reunion, just like any other gathering of people with shared interests or shared pasts, is a celebration of the values most of us hold dear. What goes on at these events? Typically, everyone gets the opportunity to retell the same stories and jokes from years past. The same people form the same groups and reminisce about the good old days. What makes them the good old days? They are made good because we know the endings to the stories. Don’t forget—reunions can be a gathering of any group with a shared past, whether you’re technically related or not. Some friends gather for their annual Army or Navy reunion and bring the whole family. Don’t discount high school reunions! You’ve probably attended at least one of these events made up of people who were not yet fully formed when they knew each other. It can be fun to discover who they turned into and how

they have lived their lives. Everyone should attend at least one of these reunions to justify their own sanity. They are fun and only last a few hours. When it’s over, everyone has something new to think about. At family reunions, you are entertained by characters that Hollywood could never dream up. There is old Uncle Joe, with his insatiable love of babies. Each year, he gathers the newly born on his lap and jostles them for the annual Uncle Joe/ New Baby photo. By the time the camera clicks, most of the babies are howling with fear and distrust. Eventually, they are handed back to their anxious mothers for calming, but for at least half an hour, we are all treated to terror-filled screaming and a full flow of tears. Who loves it? Uncle Joe loves it. This activity makes his year! Now, that’s entertainment!

Don’t forget Cousin Maude. I hope she doesn’t know that her code name is Cousin Maudlin. Cousin Maude is a woman who never settled down into marriage. She claims to have never found a man interesting enough to hold her attention. Instead, she spends much of her free time distributing pamphlets about health and safety. Cleanliness is high on her list, and she loves to share her knowledge about fleas, ticks, and handwashing. (Don’t let her see you with your fingers near your nose—she has a pamphlet for that.) We love her because only someone in the family could talk to us like that, and we know she has our best interests at heart. We think of her as an infomercial that comes with its own sanitary hand wipes. Best known for his hands-on approach is Lester. I do not know whether he is a third cousin or some distant uncle, but he is best approached from across the table. He certainly is active and full of schemes. Most difficult to avoid is Hubie. Hubie sells insurance and annuities and is always on the prowl for new clients. He comes prepared with lots of information about life protection and personal financial security. When he arrives at family shindigs with a briefcase under his right arm and a bowl of coleslaw in his left hand, we know we’re in for an insurance lesson. Do we love it? Yes, we do, because he’s family, and he cares about us. No family reunion would be complete without the boy cousins getting into food fights, followed by their water pistol battles, which often soak some of the elders, much to their displeasure. But family is family, so we accept it. If you are fortunate enough to attend an annual reunion that has been archived year after year, you are in luck. One of the events we like to attend dedicates a full picnic table to scrapbooks from years past. Looking through those pages is an opportunity to see those people now gone gazing back at us. We embrace them for their contributions to the family and the wonderful memories they gave us. In the albums of memories, we can see birth announcements, wedding invitations, obituaries, and even newspaper stories about some of us through the years. It’s priceless. If you’re deciding whether or not to attend a family reunion this year, just remember: You, too, are part of the entertainment. Pack up that fried chicken and cherry pie and go have a good time. The cost of admission is only a smile.

Vantage Point

BodyWise Therapy Healing Connections

By Maria Harding

The fascial system is vital to everything the body does, but many people have never even heard of it! This sturdy network of tissue runs throughout the entire body, supporting our muscles, organs, nerves, and blood vessels. Because of its interconnection, when one part of the body suffers trauma due to injury, surgery, inflammation, or incorrect use, the binding and pain can linger and spread to other parts of the body. Myofascial release is a hands-on therapy technique that brings the body into better balance so that it can function optimally. It is the preferred manual therapy utilized by Shanna Paopao, physical therapist and owner of BodyWise Therapy in Omaha. Shanna has been in practice as a physical therapist for 22 years. She finds that her ability to really listen to patients is the skill that allows her to be the most effective. “When I was in my first job in a skilled nursing facility, a woman who had just moved in started talking about how she felt about having to leave her home,” Shanna recalls. “When we were done, she said, ‘Well, we haven’t really done a whole lot of physical therapy today, but we had a good talk, and that was therapy in itself.’ That has stuck with me. There’s more to the world of physical therapy.” Because the fascia within the body is so interwoven, the entire body can benefit from myofascial release, even when therapy is administered in a localized area. Circulation, lymphatic drainage, breathing, and sleep can all be improved when binding and pain are eased. In two decades of practice, Shanna has seen correlations in the body that astound her. “I’ve had it happen a number of times,” she confides. One woman came in for back and neck pain. She also had a lot of swelling in her legs, which seemed unrelated. After treatments, that swelling went down, and the client said she could think more clearly. Shanna describes herself as “logical” and very science-minded, but she has found confidence in following her instincts, too. “I’ve learned that I am more intuitive than I ever realized,” she shares. It is ideal to have physical therapy services immediately after experiencing trauma, to minimize the stiffness and muscle weakness that set in as we heal. That said, physical therapy can help an old injury, too. Accommodating scar tissue, pain, or weakness by adapting the way we move, stand, or even sleep can affect areas of the body beyond those that were directly impacted. Shanna looks at the body as a whole, to make sure our adaptations are not causing harm. “You could have some little imbalances,” she explains. “This type of treatment will address things differently. I’m always hopeful there will be some change. Even people who don’t have pain can benefit.” An entire section of BodyWise’s beautiful and informative website bodywiseomaha.com is dedicated to women’s health. 18

August 2021

Shanna Paopao, PT, Owner

Specifically addressed are the benefits of physical therapy following breast cancer surgery. Even an entirely successful surgery, Shanna notes, is still a trauma to the body. There will be health challenges that extend well beyond the initial crisis, and they may require a multifaceted approach to healing. Physical therapy and myofascial release can support lymphatic function, allow for full respiration, and help women regain strength, flexibility, and mobility. Other aspects of women’s health that can benefit from physical therapy and myofascial release include painful menstruation or intercourse, bowel issues, and incontinence issues. “All of these areas have fascia surrounding and supporting,” Shanna explains. “If you have restrictions throughout your abdomen, then the intestines and other pelvic organs don’t have quite the mobility they may need.” A tilted pelvis, scarring, muscle weakness, and childbirth are all challenges that can cause lingering issues. Individuals with diseases that affect mobility, such as arthritis, should consider consulting with Shanna. Damage to joints and the progression of neurological diseases cannot be reversed, but a comprehensive physical therapy program can ease stiffness, strengthen balance, and help sufferers get to a point of making an informed decision about how to proceed. “Sometimes, physical therapy helps people decide they really do need to have surgery, if the condition is bad enough,” Shanna clarifies. “On the other hand, it can help them feel better, and they know they can hold off.” BodyWise nurtures connections on many levels—healing and balancing the fascial system itself, honoring the link between body and mind, and building trust in personal relationships. “Throughout my career, my connection with people is what I’ve always liked about being a physical therapist,” Shanna concludes. “I am an introvert, but I really value people. We need each other.” BodyWise Therapy is located at 2504 South 119th Street, in Omaha. To reach Shanna, call 402-932-8686 or visit bodywiseomaha.com.

Love Your Skin! Facials for All Skin Types By Janette Calabro

Many of us are back in the office and around and about town these days. Both women and men have a strong urge to make a good impression, and we’re heading into social situations showing more facial skin than we have in a year! One of the best ways to brighten up your appearance and improve your look is with regular facials. Not sure what kind of facial to get? The list of exotic ingredients can be dizzying, and different skin responds differently to each one. Many experts recommend alpha and beta hydroxyl chemical peels, as well as retinoic acid, to slough off old skin cells and promote collagen development. Your spa, dermatologist, or aesthetician will help you figure out what type of facial will help you get the outcome you desire. Most professionals agree that consistency is key to achieve the desired effect. That means you should have a facial every four to six weeks. The process will likely start with a consultation and a questionnaire to determine what treatment is best. Your facialist will ask you specific questions, and you’ll likely complete a form with important information to help determine your best choices. For example, what are your skin goals? Do you want to get rid of acne, or are you leaning toward smoothing out those wrinkles? It may be both! What’s your skin type? Are you oily, dry, or combination? Are you taking any medications, including supplements or vitamins? How much water do you drink? Do you eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and—drum roll, please!—stay out of the sun? Answer all the questions honestly to get the best results. Sun damage protection will play into your conversation no matter what facial you decide on. Expect 60 to 90 minutes for your facial, or get an express facial in 30 minutes. Before we dive into the types of facials, let’s take a moment to talk about credentials. There are differences between an aesthetician and a medical aesthetician. Aestheticians usually work in a spa or salon and are required to complete 600 hours of education. They treat conditions like age spots, dry skin, and other minor skin challenges. Medical aestheticians, on the other hand, have higher education credentials and are often trained to work in a clinical setting. They can perform specialized treatments for serious skin challenges such as burns or plastic surgery recovery. Medical aestheticians perform procedures at salons and spas, too, but their training may go deeper than an aesthetician, into intensive facials or treatments such as chemical peels or laser tattoo removal. Be sure to ask who will be doing your facial and find out how much experience that person has performing facials and any other procedures you may desire. Now, it’s time to review some common types of facials. Let’s start with the classic facial, sometimes called the European facial. Cleansing, steaming for easier exfoliation, and 20

August 2021

extraction of pore impurities are generally included, along with a mask, serums, and moisturizers for a glowing result. These facials often include a lymphatic massage to relax tense muscles in the neck and face. Lymphatic massage makes a difference in water retention, circulation, and removal of toxins. Ask for an aromatherapy add-on with essential oils. Peace and tranquility will follow. If you’re worried about harsh chemicals, ask for just a basic cleanup facial. Your facialist may start the cleansing process with steaming to open up the pores, releasing clogs and other impurities. Cleansing will be followed by a moisturizer, which can often include ingredients customized for your skin type. Acne reduction facials address oily skin and troublesome breakouts. These are more of a deep clean, including a mask and moisturizer. Best results materialize if you make regular appointments every four to six weeks, based on the advice of your professional. It’s tempting to treat acne aggressively, but watch out for abrasive products that may overstimulate sebaceous glands or irritate skin. A soothing facial will reduce irritation and kill the bacteria that cause acne. If lesions are severe, it is best to check with a dermatologist before getting a facial. In some cases, a more aggressive treatment is actually warranted. Another great add-on for acne is LED light therapy. Harvard Health states, “Blue LED light is most often used to treat acne. It may do this by reducing activity in the sebaceous glands, so they produce less of the oil that can plug the hair follicles, leading to acne. Blue light may also kill acne-causing bacteria.” Light therapy is non-invasive and uses different wavelengths to treat inflammation. There is also a red light that rejuvenates skin and promotes healing! For a natural radiance treatment, try the fruit facial. Fruit enzymes are rich in antioxidants, the compounds that stop chemical reactions in your skin that result from pollution and other aggravators. They aid in minimizing wrinkles and dark spots. Some antioxidant facials incorporate vitamins A, C, and E for radiant skin tone naturally via serums, creams, and masks. Ingredients such as beta-carotene (found in carrots and more) will purge impurities and smooth out dark spots. You may well have considered having a little wine with your facial, but how about having a little wine in the facial? A wine facial can help with fine lines and restore skin’s elasticity, leaving you with a more youthful glow.

www.womensedition.com

Chemical peels are great for a deep clean and for decongesting pores. Once the damaged skin peels off, deeper-set wrinkles will look less harsh, and fine lines often disappear altogether. The newly revealed skin will certainly look fresher, and you might even see a positive difference in acne scars and dark spots. Many of us have heard about the ever-popular HydraFacial. With this type of patented facial, a vacuum-like device sucks out dirt, oil, and grime. It is somewhat gentler than microdermabrasion (which feels a little gritty but is effective). Often a three-step process of cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration, a HydraFacial can help with acne, dry skin, and wrinkles. It also promotes more efficient delivery of serums into the skin. Popular anti-aging facials address multiple skin ailments for a younger, fresher look. For example, a collagen facial softens wrinkles and saggy skin by sloughing off the top layer of skin cells so that lotions and potions containing collagen can absorb better. Dive deeper into anti-aging with a glycolic acid facial. The result is flawless skin, diminished dark spots, and fewer lines. This powerful acid can be harsh on sensitive skin, so check with your aesthetician first to see if this facial is right for you. For an even deeper anti-aging facial, consider laser resurfacing. It is safe and effective, but it’s a little more invasive than the other facials we’ve discussed. A fractional CO-2 laser makes tiny wounds in the skin to stimulate new cell growth. It can even help improve skin texture and minimize

large pores. Talk to your aesthetician to learn more about this specialized face treatment. If you’ve never had a high-frequency micro-current facial, it’s time to try one. Yes, an electrical current is used, but it doesn’t hurt. In fact, the current gets rid of bacteria and eliminates inflammation—perfect for acne. The galvanic facial involves a form of micro-current. The skin is treated with a handheld device, which stimulates muscles for improved tone and composition. It promotes circulation and even helps healing after surgical procedures by helping serums and products better absorb into the skin. No matter your desired outcome, there’s a facial out there to address the issues you’re having with your skin. Stick with one of your favorites or go out on a limb and try something different. You might find something more specific, such as a photo-facial treatment using different types of LED light or an acupuncture facial to stimulate collagen and elasticity. You might even find a new favorite! Be sure to ask your spa professional or dermatologist for more choices and the best advice. Most facials are relaxing, and who doesn’t need that these days? Relax and detox your skin. Leave the spa looking younger, more vibrant, and clean down to your pores. With reduced wrinkles, less acne, lifted contours, and a radiant glow, what’s not to love? Check in with your favorite spa today or ask someone with beautiful skin for a recommendation. Sources for this article included: health.harvard.edu, healthline.com, and webmd.com.

Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

Alternatives for Safer Trips By Jackie Williams

By now, it seems that virtually everything is opened back up after a long pandemic. Many are ready to get out and take a trip. Are you? What hobbies and activities have kept you busy this past year or so? Personally, I have gotten into birding, biking, and golfing quite often. Surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, camping, and road trips are also near the top of my list. Despite the changing circumstances we have all had to endure, getting out in nature is a lifesaver, wouldn’t you agree? I want to encourage you to travel safely and enjoy the beauty and scenery right here in the United States. Here are several options to get you started, even if you are a little hesitant. Option 1: Road Trip. That’s right, take your own vehicle or rent an RV and hit up destinations you have always wanted to see. Book campsites at national parks, wilderness areas, state beaches, or privately owned land. From the views of Big Sur to the wildlife in Yellowstone to the rolling hills of the South, the choices are endless. There are several types of RV or camping clubs that allow you to camp on a farm, orchard, or winery for a different (and more private) experience. I recommend keeping the daily drive to around five to six hours so you still have enough energy to do something at your destination each day. Option 2: Train Travel. This can be done in more ways than one. Local area trains provide short day excursions. If you want to explore more of the country, check out Amtrak. Their website has a “Deals” tab with all sorts of discounts to take advantage of. Enjoy a private room with comfortable amenities and a great view. Fall and wintertime will offer some breathtaking scenic landscapes on just about every route. You will see things that you’ve never seen from the seat of a car. Train travel is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Catch a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to and from the train station—it’s easier than ever to go car-free when you reach your destination. Booking is even easier with the help of your travel agent. Option 3: Enjoy the Property. Visit a hotel, resort, or home rental just to enjoy the property for a few days. Sometimes, we are so “go, go, go” when we’re on vacation that we don’t get to experience what a hotel has to offer, like lounging by the pool, taking a private aerobics class, enjoying guided hikes, relaxing with spa treatments, taking in some golf or tennis, or being treated like royalty in an executive club lounge. When I can enjoy a club lounge, I love just hanging out at the hotel and relaxing. It makes me

feel truly pampered. Spend a little more on a hotel and see what it will get you. Option 4: Golf Trip. Whether you are a veteran to the game or part of the surge of new golfers to hit the links in 2020 (women made up 450,000 of them), now is a great time to take in an amazing course. Destinations like Marco Island, Florida; Palm Springs, California; Phoenix, Arizona; St. George, Utah; and coastal South Carolina are a few of the hot spots. Have your travel agent book your lodging in any one of these areas and then book a tee time at a different course each day. Despite your handicap, you will enjoy the views of the course and have a great time. Even without restrictions, golf will always remain a “socially distant” game—there’s always plenty of room on the greens. Option 5: Take a Hike! Literally. Pack up your daypack, hiking poles, and hydration bladder and get a move on. No matter where you live, you can find a satisfying hike within an hour or two, if not closer. It doesn’t have to be strenuous. Download the bird-identifying app Merlin. Once you identify your first bird, I bet you will be hooked like I was! It is amazing to see the birds react to the calls and sounds. It is so exciting! Traverse mountains, hills, rivers, wetlands, deserts, or plains as you walk your stresses away and admire the sunrise or the sunset. Your body may get tired, but your spirit will be renewed. How do those options sound? Have you done any or all of them already? Alternative ways to travel can make us feel more comfortable while enjoying a new experience. Let us ease back into the exciting world of travel safely and respectfully. Sources for this article included: amtrak.com, golfdigest. com, and merlin.allaboutbirds.org.

Jenny Craig’s Rapid Results Max Maximize Your Weight Loss

By Maria Harding

Jenny Craig is more than a weight-loss program. It represents the latest science aimed at optimizing our health. The company constantly analyzes data on nutritional health and subtly shifts focus within its enduring program to reflect research findings. However, its greatest strength lies in its network of supportive individuals who guide clients on their journeys. Chris Coash is one such individual. She has worked for Jenny Craig since 1992, first as a consultant, later in various sales and management positions, and now as the franchise owner of six locations. “I’m part of the Jenny Craig family,” she says. “One of the things about Jenny Craig is that we work together because we all have the same mission—to help change lives.” She enthusiastically shares the current area of focus within Jenny Craig, the Rapid Results and Rapid Results Max programs. Rapid Results Max blends two major pieces of nutritional science: intermittent fasting and calorie loading early in the day. An intermittent fast allows the body’s digestion to rest for 12 to 14 hours each day. Eating heavier meals earlier in the day, followed by lighter subsequent meals, encourages the body to use those calories during the day’s activities. Rapid Results is the partner program that advocates calorie loading early in the day but does not include the fasting component. “We have found that some of our clients don’t want to use intermittent fasting,” Chris explains, “either because they’re working a third shift and their circadian rhythm doesn’t allow for the fasting, or they just don’t want to go through a time when they’re not eating.” Lately, you may have read a lot about intermittent fasting. Current research suggests that it is not only an effective tool for weight loss but also a means to prevent and even reverse other diseases. Because intermittent fasting reduces inflammation, it has been shown to ease afflictions such as diabetes, hypertension, and irritable bowel syndrome. Before tweaking your metabolism with any kind of fasting, it is important to consult your doctor, particularly if you have a blood sugar disorder. Jenny Craig’s new Recharge Bar allows the fasting to continue in the morning while jump-starting your metabolism for maximum fat burn. A gluten-free treat made with honey and nuts, the Recharge Bar will hold your hunger at bay a little longer as you start your day. “It’s an amazing piece of science,” Chris shares. “During the pandemic, we had to adjust the way that we serve our clients. It drove research and development to be less focused on each individual location. Instead, it put the focus into things like creating this Recharge Bar.”

The Rapid Results plans blend beautifully with the time-tested Chris Coash, Franchise Owner Jenny Craig program. Jenny Craig has been helping people lose weight healthfully since the 1980s. It combines delicious pre-made menu selections with oneon-one coachings with a weight-loss mentor. Jenny Craig’s team of chefs and nutrition experts is constantly updating the menu options. The variety of delicious meals can accommodate vegetarians, those eating gluten-free, clients with diabetes, breastfeeding mothers, and individuals with certain allergies. “We have a lot of dietary needs worked into the program,” explains Chris. “We can meet many people’s dietary needs and preferences.” Personalized coaches are an integral part of the Jenny Craig program. They will explore your strengths as well as any barriers to healthy eating. Coaching sessions can be done in person or online; this flexibility is a silver lining that emerged during the pandemic. “In the traditional format, you went to the center closest to your home and chose your coach from the people working in that location,” Chris explains. “Now, with the expansion of the digital format, clients can work with any of the coaches anywhere.” This mentorship is such a crucial ingredient for success that Jenny Craig advocates changing coaches if the chemistry isn’t in perfect harmony. “The one-on-one coaching is designed to motivate and drive the client’s behavior,” Chris says. “That only happens when the coach and client have a relationship that allows that kind of work to move forward.” Chris encourages everyone to check out Jenny Craig’s comprehensive website at jennycraig.com. “The best way to get questions answered is to pick up the phone and call one of the local centers,” she adds. “My staff is able to share all of the components of Jenny Craig.” To make this proven weight-loss program even more effective, she counsels, “be honest with yourself about your purpose as you start a weight-loss journey. Ask yourself why you want to lose weight.” This will help ensure you get paired with just the right coach. Together, you will find success through Jenny Craig. August 2021

Slimming Solutions Non-Surgical Fat Reduction

By Loretta McCollum

Sometimes, stubborn fat deposits resist even our best efforts to eradicate them. Fortunately, today’s technology provides us with several non-invasive options to help tackle the problem. Heat or cold, light or radio waves, injectables or ultrasound—there’s a technique tailored for every issue. These non-invasive procedures are not associated with any major health risks or significant side effects, but it’s important to check with your doctor before undergoing treatment of any kind. Before you seek the go-ahead from your physician, let’s take a look at some of the various treatments. TightSculpting is an option to address fat deposits all over the body. TightSculpting uses a dual-wavelength laser to sculpt and tighten. The first laser heats the fat cells, stimulating metabolism. A second laser heats the surface tissue, prompting new collagen production that improves skin elasticity. Treatments take 30 minutes, and most patients undergo three to six sessions for optimum results. Treated skin may be slightly red for a few days, but no downtime is required. Fat cells that have been destroyed will not return. Another device that uses heat to destroy fat cells is truSculpt 3D. This method uses radiofrequency instead of lasers to heat the tissue. Studies have shown that some individuals experienced fat loss up to 24 percent from just one truSculpt 3D treatment. It may be a particularly good option for areas with loose skin. Drink plenty of fluids for optimal results.

Thermage is a skin-tightening treatment that also uses radiofrequency to heat tissue. It can be used on most areas where there is loose skin, even on the eyelids. No more looking lopsided, with one eyelid drooping a little more than the other! Tighten up that skin with a single treatment of Thermage, and your eyelids will be symmetrical again for 12–24 months. EMSCULPT is the first technique to employ electromagnetic energy to tone muscle. The electromagnetic waves cause muscles to contract up to 20,000 times per minute, encouraging muscle growth and fat loss. After four 30-minute treatments, patients may gain an average of 16 percent muscle mass and experience a 19 percent reduction in their waistline. It’s like a workout without the workout. Results can be permanent if exercise and proper diet are maintained. EMSCULPT is best for people who are close to their ideal weight but

want to look more defined. You should avoid this treatment if your body contains metal, such as pacemakers or support rods. Lipo-Light uses LED light therapy to stimulate fat cells into releasing the fat into the body, where it is burned for energy or eliminated naturally. This method is great for the waist, hips, thighs, and upper arms. It also involves physical exercise in order to maintain results. Treatments last about 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of exercise. It’s possible to lose a couple of inches in just one treatment! Results are long-term, but be aware that continued exercise is key to lasting results. Lipo-Light also boosts collagen production, helping skin remain elastic. We’re all familiar with the idea of burning fat, but burning it isn’t the only way to lose fat. You can also freeze your fat away with technology like CoolSculpting or CryoSkin. CoolSculpting freezes and destroys fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body. A small vacuum device sucks the skin into an applicator that freezes the fat cells. Treatments take about an hour, and patients report an average 20 percent loss of fat cells. CryoSkin is a body contouring process that originated in Paris. Like CoolSculpting, CryoSkin treatments freeze fat cells. It’s great for love handles, thighs, and arms. It improves circulation and boosts collagen production, breaking down fat. Treatments last about 20 minutes, and results are visible immediately. Maintenance treatments are performed every six months. If you have diabetes or are pregnant, however, this is not the option for you. Ultrasound fat reduction utilizes sonic waves to break down fat cells, releasing them into the body to be naturally metabolized. This is a good option for fat deposits on the abdomen and buttocks. The destroyed fat cells will not grow back, and results are long-lasting with weight maintenance. Finally, Kybella is an injectable form of deoxycholic acid (a naturally occurring substance in the body). It breaks down fat cells on contact to reduce a fat pocket. It’s very effective in reducing a double chin. Treatment involves multiple injections, and little downtime is required. Typically, patients undergo two to four treatments, one month apart. Fat cells are destroyed and will not return. Non-invasive fat reduction procedures generally produce results gradually, but those results are long-lasting. Consult a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or medi-spa to determine which procedure best suits your needs. Dream Kitchens High Function Meets High Style

By Robyn V. Powell

There’s no question that a well-designed kitchen is the centerpiece of any home. An efficient layout and an inviting atmosphere encourage family and guests to gather and linger long after dessert has been served! In 2021, the new normal means more time spent at home. It’s no wonder that homeowners want an updated cooking zone that features beautiful design, high functionality, convenient features, ample storage, and a suite of hardworking appliances. If a kitchen remodel is in your near future (or you just want to dream a little), gather inspiration from exciting design trends and embrace the opportunity to create a cooking and gathering space that’s uniquely your own. Whether you choose a complete overhaul—a take-down of your current kitchen to the studs and subfloor—or a more time-friendly and budget-friendly option, you want a cooking zone that’s both welcoming and hardworking. Experts tell us that lifestyle enhancement is driving the remodeling industry. It’s no longer just about adding resale value to the home. Replacing outdated appliances with energy-efficient models that increase energy and water savings or taking a kitchen from dark and dated to light and bright will boost your mood and your home’s value. Functionality begins with a smart floor plan. Upgrading an awkward layout to an L-shaped kitchen—with two walls of cabinets and an island—enables easy traffic flow and optimal efficiency. An island provides additional cabinetry, can hold appliances or a sink, and offers a place to pull up a stool and eat. Best of all, a

working island offers more surface prep area, which makes room for a few more cooks in the kitchen! Cabinets are a fundamental component of the kitchen and play a major role in the overall look and feel of the space. Because cabinets represent the biggest chunk of remodeling cost, your selection requires careful consideration. The key to cabinetry is finding the right style, color, and material to both complement your kitchen and play off your personality. Shaker-style cabinets in white or other light colors remain a top choice. Trending right alongside are bold black and navy cabinets in rich, deep hues that contrast beautifully with light-colored countertops. In addition to beautiful design aesthetic, consumers want hard-working cabinets. Enhance function with sophisticated storage. Stretch cabinets from floor to ceiling to maximize

available space. Sliding pull-outs have become increasingly popular because they are so convenient. No more kneeling on the floor and unpacking cookware to find that casserole dish you rarely use. In-between cabinet pull-outs are ingenious for keeping spices and cooking oils at your fingertips but still tucked away out of sight. A growing number of homeowners are adding pantry space, whether it’s a walk-in pantry or pantry cabinets. If your existing cabinets are well constructed, refacing is an excellent option. Simply adding new doors and hardware can quickly and dramatically change the look of cabinets at an attractive price point. Nothing showcases new cabinets better than gleaming new countertops. Quartz, the top choice among designers, is beautiful, durable, easy to maintain, and less expensive than natural granite or marble. Light color tones are currently the most popular countertops on the market. Whether your style is contemporary chic or leans more traditional, thoughtful lighting (overhead, task, and ambient) is key to a kitchen’s functionality and mood. Pendant lighting fixtures provide drop-down lighting and can be tailored to any design style. Soft gold finishes are trending; when mixed with metal finishes on faucets and hardware, gold creates a dynamic design that can make the kitchen feel warmer and cozier. When the mood calls for relaxation, soften light with dimmable fixtures and subtle under-cabinet lighting. The leading trend for kitchen flooring is hardwood. Beautiful, warm, and inviting, hardwood is comfortable underfoot and easy to maintain. Ceramic and porcelain tile, as well as cement, are popular flooring options that hold up well to high traffic, spills, and pets. Technology has driven the desire for smart appliances, with smart ovens and smart refrigerators leading the way. Stainless steel appliances remain popular and go with virtually any color wall or cabinet. Stainless lends an elegant, streamlined aesthetic to any kitchen. Colored appliances have made a resurgence in recent years, and the trend isn’t going away any time soon. Appliances available in stunning colors such as cobalt blue, fire engine red, or bold and beautiful matte black make a statement that will be the focal point of any kitchen. From outdated to outstanding, a kitchen remodel is about bringing fresh style and function to your life and creating the look and lifestyle you’ve been dreaming about! To Your Good Health

Sleep Better, Live Better A Good Night’s Sleep

By Leslie Byrne

Since we were kids, we’ve been told that it’s important to get a good night’s sleep. (Just another thing our parents were right about!) A healthy amount of shut-eye for most adults is seven to nine hours per night. Unfortunately, most Americans are not getting the sleep they need. Being sleep-deprived can affect how safely someone drives or performs at work, and it poses an increased risk for serious health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, and weight gain. Around 70 million people in the United States aren’t merely sleep-deprived—they have one or more sleep disorders. These disorders change not only how much you sleep but also the quality of the sleep you do get, and they can drastically affect overall health and quality of life. If your focus in 2021 is on a healthier you, add improving your sleep to your health plan. Signs that someone is suffering from a sleep disorder include excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or more movement during sleep, or difficulty falling asleep. The most common sleep disorders are insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome (RLS), and narcolepsy. Each has its own cause and treatment. Someone suffering from insomnia has difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. This commonly leads to daytime sleepiness, irritability, and trouble concentrating. Insomnia can be short-term or long-term and is often caused by stress. Unhealthy living habits and sleep habits can contribute to insomnia, as can various mental

health issues, including depression. For some people, chronic pain, heartburn, a chronic disease, hormone fluctuations, or medications can cause insomnia. Insomnia is more common in women and in people older than 60. To diagnose insomnia, your doctor will ask questions about your sleep habits and how you are feeling. Blood work may be ordered to rule out a medical condition as the cause. Short-term insomnia usually gets better on its own, especially if sleep habits are improved. Such improvements might include avoiding computer or cell phone use before bed, avoiding caffeine or food close to bedtime, and falling asleep in a quiet, darkened room. For chronic insomnia, a doctor can order sleep therapy or prescribe medication. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This is when the throat muscles intermittently relax and block the airway during sleep. The most common signs of

obstructive sleep apnea are significant snoring or gasping for breath during sleep. Risk factors include excessive weight, a narrow airway, high blood pressure, chronic nasal congestion, smoking, diabetes, and asthma. Complications can be as serious as heart attack or stroke. You may be asked to do a sleep study if your doctor suspects that you have sleep apnea. A sleep study, conducted by a somnologist, can identify the severity and type of sleep apnea and can help determine the proposed treatment plan. Many people will need to use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine while sleeping to keep their airways open. Other treatment may include a custom device placed in the mouth to keep the jaw pushed forward during sleep. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a nervous system condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, usually in the evening, while the person is seated or lying down. It may cause someone’s legs to twitch and kick during sleep. RLS can happen at any age and may be caused by an imbalance of the brain chemical dopamine, which sends messages to control muscle movement. There is a lot we do not know about RLS, but medications can help. A neurologist will guide treatment. The rarest of the common sleep disorders is narcolepsy. Someone with narcolepsy is overwhelmed with tiredness during the day. This leads to a full inability to stay awake. People with narcolepsy can fall asleep suddenly, at any time, including during work or conversation. When they wake up, minutes later, they feel refreshed but eventually get sleepy again. There is no cure for narcolepsy, but a neurologist can help patients manage the disorder with medication and lifestyle changes. You can lower your risk of developing a sleep disorder by prioritizing good health habits and good sleep habits. Maintain a healthy weight. Eat a balanced diet and get regular exercise. Consume less caffeine, especially late in the day. Set and maintain a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and waking up at about the same time every day and avoiding naps. Limit computer and cell phone use before bedtime. If you think you have a sleep disorder or just can’t seem to stay wakeful during the day, make an appointment with your doctor. You may find the treatment you need for better sleep and a better life! Sources for this article included: sleepfoundation.org, mayoclinic.org, my.clevelandclinic. org, and medicalnewstoday.com.

We just loved the beat, the energy, the power that came with those words. My husband, Manny, and I have discussed the topic of respect hundreds of times over the nine years we have been together. A few weeks ago, we were enjoying our morning ritual of coffee and conversation, when Manny said suddenly, “It has to be MUTUAL respect, not just respect.” “The most essential ingredient for harmonious relationships is mutual respect.” —Karen Garvey We were discussing all types of relationships—marriage, family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and so on. We came to the conclusion that respect has to be a two-way street. If not, it is simply an organized pecking order that we have become accustomed to. One person gets respect, the other person feels inferior, frustrated, angry…certainly not in harmony with the first person. “Mutual respect is the foundation of genuine harmony.” —Dalai Lama

Creating and maintaining respectful relationships in our lives can be challenging. Some of the people in our circle understand this concept, and some of them do not. What can we do about it? If the relationship is important to us, we might be able to fix it by communicating our thoughts…respectfully…to them. This means taking the time to sit—in person—and discuss our concerns. If meeting in person is not an option, the next best solution is an appointment for a telephone conversation. No texting. No instant messaging. No emailing. If you go down that path, you have made the decision to disrespect the relationship that you are trying to repair. “Texting is a brilliant way to miscommunicate how you feel and misinterpret what other people mean.” —Anonymous Reflecting on the relationships in our lives, and deciding to improve them by improving ourselves, will also improve our lives. Admitting to ourselves when we have been less than respectful to someone is the start. It can get better…in all areas of our relationships. "By mutual respect, understanding, and with good will, we can find acceptable solutions to any problems which exist or may arise between us.” —Dwight D. Eisenhower

Kids Comments

Teaching Kids of All Ages I Hope They Learned as Much as I Did! On a recent trip, I stopped to eat lunch at a local park and watched a group of kids playing there. It reminded me of the years I spent working with kids: teaching four- and fiveyear-olds in preschool, substituting in everything from special education pre-K to ninth grade shop, and tutoring students of all ages and abilities. Looking back, I realize how much I learned from working with kids. Preschool was fun. We read stories, practiced living skills, and enjoyed activities in science, art, and music. My favorite was science. We learned about our small animals (guinea pigs pee a lot and rabbits are messy), explored the outdoors, and went sledding on cafeteria trays. The hardest part was getting boots on the kids when it snowed. I learned that bread bags really help getting boots on 20 kids fast enough that we still had time to play. I also learned to get down on the floor with the kids. Jeans and tennies were a must! I’ve been a substitute teacher at every level, from pre-kindergarten to college classes. Over these years, I developed my mantras: “Kids are people, too!” and “Respect earns respect.” Do you recall how kids try to fool substitute teachers? I learned to be adaptable, unflappable, and not too serious. One class (I lovingly refer to them as “the class from hell”) hid the teacher’s math book, thinking I wouldn’t be able to teach math without it.

By Marge Shoemaker

They were surprised when I borrowed one of their texts. Tutoring was really special. My students ranged from fouryear-old twins to college students, several adults (including some in medical or law school), and a gentleman in his 80s. We offered recovery, remediation, and enrichment, and self-confidence. No matter their age or education, it was mostly about teaching them how to learn rather than what to learn (that was up to the classroom teacher). I’ll share some favorite memories. Seth exuberantly taught me the Macarena and explained “snuba” (a combination of snorkeling and scuba diving) after returning from a family vacation. John wrote from Officer Candidate School, thanking me for showing him how to prepare for reading (I learned military theory and procedures in the process). Jerry was concerned about the range of MCAT tests. “I’ve always studied with the mindset that I had to learn. I don’t know how to just read,” he worried. We practiced finding answers—you learn a lot from those tests! Sam explained, “I finished school in Europe. I just need to learn to write and spell English better.” He practiced by writing about his experiences. Amy told me, “The teacher says I don’t belong if I can’t get it. It’s hard!” Her self-confidence soared while teaching me trigonometry. (I prepared with a teacher’s manual.) I hope my students learned as much as I did!

Caring Senior Services Closing the Gap in Senior Care

By Marge Shoemaker

Caring Senior Services is closing the gap in senior care. To make that point clear, Jeff Salter, CEO and founder of Caring Senior Services, recently cruised into Omaha on an electric hybrid bicycle, towing a self-designed trailer to haul everything he needs. This 9,000-mile trek is to visit his 45 franchises and to make a statement regarding senior care. Jeff declares that the primary purpose of the trip ‘Ride to Close the Gap in Senior Care’ is to alert the nation to the increased care that our senior citizens need.“The number of seniors is increasing as the boomer generation reaches retirement age,”Jeff says. These people need care and equipment they may not have needed earlier in their lives. “Every 11 seconds, a senior citizen receives emergency treatment from a fall,” Jeff states, explaining that he’s also using the tour as a fundraiser for safety equipment. “Part of what we raise will be used to close the gap in senior care,” he explains. June Mourgis, the owner of the Caring Senior Services franchise in Omaha, declares, “Jeff’s electric bicycle tour serves as a metaphor, illustrating the idea that we can ac-

old will generally experience some decline in mental health, physical health, or both, and will end up needing some outside help. Many of us go from being cared for by our parents to caring for our parents, and it’s not an easy transition. An added challenge is recognizing that our efforts and expertise may not be enough for our loved ones—we may need professional help to fully meet their needs. The caregivers at Caring Senior Services offer non-medical care assistance in a variety of ways. Shirley Tingley is the local agency director, and she outlines the services they offer. “Personal care, meal preparation, transportation, medical reminders and alerts, light cleaning, respite care, errands, companionship…anything the client needs from us, except skilled health care,” says Shirley. That’s an important distinction, June adds. The Caring Senior Service caregivers maintain open communication with the families of their clients. If they feel that a client would benefit from additional services from other agencies, they don’t hesitate to share that information. “Open communication with the caregiver makes the family an important part of our work with their elderly relatives,” June emphasizes. Despite the “Senior” in their name, Caring Senior Services also works with younger adults who may need assistance during a difficult time. “We’ve had clients in their late teens and early 20s who are recovering from severe illness or injury, who need outside assistance until they are back on their feet,” June reports. “Some of our younger clients are developmentally delayed, and their families find it difficult to find help.”

Aislinn.indd 1

After an initial assessment of a client’s needs, Shirley says, Caring Senior Services will suggest which of their services are appropriate or will direct the client to the proper agency for help. Getting outside help is as necessary for the caregivers in the family as it is for the client. “Being a caregiver isn’t an easy job,” June points out. “Even our trained staff members find it stressful at times.” What does it take to be a Caring Senior Services caregiver? “We need people who can give the family caregiver a break in the routine…time to themselves or a day to take care of personal business,” June says. “Everyone needs a break! Remember when your children were small and you’d give anything to have an adult conversation?” “At any point in your life, there is a place for Caring Senior Service. Whether you become a caregiver, call for advice for caring for your loved one, or have us come into your home for assistance, there is always a place for Caring Senior Service,” says Shirley. People of all ages can be great caregivers, as long as they’re interested in working with the elderly and improving their lives. Give her a call, she says. “We’ll train you for whatever you want to contribute.” June concludes with the Caring Senior Services motto: “Every senior should be able to remain healthy, happy, and at home!” Caring Senior Services is bonded and insured for their clients’ safety and security. Focus on Finance

Mutual Funds Versus ETFs Buy and Sell or Buy and Hold? By George Morgan

Today, Americans own more stocks that at any point in the nation’s history. Over 80 percent of those assets are invested in mutual funds of all sizes and shapes. According to the Investment Managers’Association, there are currently 9,843 funds, with $21 trillion under management. They further estimate that 10 new funds are added to the mix each week, creating both great opportunity and decision overload for the investing public. The form of mutual fund that most investors are familiar with is the actively managed fund. These funds are produced, marketed, and managed by for-profit investment firms. These companies can be independent operations or a unit within one of the major brokerage firms. The fund producer gathers money from numerous investors and then hires a professional money manager to invest the funds based upon a predetermined philosophy. They can focus on certain areas of the market, like large companies, tech companies, or industrial sectors such as health care or energy. The fund’s investment strategy is described in a legal document that is available to any potential investor. Some investors buy mutual funds through a broker, while others buy them directly from the fund company without consulting a financial professional. Passive investors will buy a single fund and then sit back and let the fund manager handle it. More proactive types will follow the market’s activity and move dollars from fund to fund as they observe changes in the economy and market. In 1975, Jack Bogle introduced the index fund that slowly changed the way investors include mutual funds in their portfolios. The index fund approach is 180 degrees from the approach used by actively managed funds. Rather than frequent buying and selling in order to enhance the fund’s performance, index funds simply replicate one of the major indexes, such as the Dow Jones Industrial or the S&P 500. They buy and hold all the stocks in the index in the same proportion as they appear in the index. This strategy results in investment returns that mirror those of the major index that the fund is replicating. At first, Mr. Bogle packaged his index funds using the same format as the actively managed funds—the difference was that there was no portfolio manager or active trading. In the mid-1990s, other Wall Street types came along and repackaged index funds into what are called exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The main distinction between an actively managed fund and an ETF is the way they are bought and sold. Actively managed funds are bought and sold at the end of the business day, and their transaction price is based on the value of the portfolio. ETFs are what the name implies: They are traded on the stock exchange, just like individual stocks. Their price is determined by the buyers and sellers. Because ETFs are sold like individual stocks, transactions 42

August 2021

must be based on the number of shares. With managed funds, on the other hand, traders can buy and sell particular dollar amounts. Also, managed funds can have dividends automatically reinvested in the fund, while owners of ETFs must complete any reinvestment program manually. In most cases, these differences are not deal-breakers, but they can sway an investor one way or the other. The decision to utilize index funds or actively managed funds depends upon the individual investor’s financial situation, investment style, and investment goals. Some people don’t feel comfortable managing their accounts and would prefer to rely on the expertise of a financial professional. For these investors, the managed fund is a favorable solution. Individuals who want to become more involved in the investment process and who are willing to devote the time and effort required to do so may choose to buy ETFs. Any discussion of mutual funds and ETFs must include the issue of fees. All mutual funds and ETFs have operating costs. Because they are for-profit companies, these fees are passed on to their shareholders. In the case of actively managed funds, these expenses include the cost of the portfolio manager, administrative fees, and trading costs. The “buy and hold” approach of an index fund eliminates these costs; thus, index funds are less expensive to hold. Investors have choices and must decide which method best meets their objectives. Competition has motivated the financial services industry to create new products and services that allow Americans to build and maintain investment strategies that fit their needs instead of simply generating revenue for Wall Street. Don’t get me wrong—financial firms have not turned into not-for-profit ventures. They have simply found new ways to make the process a win for everyone involved. Unity Chiropractic A Unique Approach to Wellness

By Linda Sutherland

Whole-body wellness is something we all want and need. Where do we begin? How about with a visit to Danielle Stalp, DC, at Unity Chiropractic? Dr. Danielle practices a specific form of chiropractic treatment called NUCCA. She is one of only about 350 practitioners in the world who are specifically trained in this field, and we are lucky enough to have her in the Omaha area! NUCCA is named for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association where it was developed. It is a safe, non-invasive, painless technique that focuses on correcting the misalignment of the upper cervical spine through a precise correction that takes the pressure off the brainstem. This allows your nervous system to function properly. These treatments are gentle and require only subtle adjustments of the upper region of the neck—no twisting or popping going on here! The first order of business is to have a consultation with Dr. Danielle to ensure that NUCCA is the correct treatment for your needs. She will ask about your lifestyle, your medical history, and what led you to seek treatment. From there, she will likely take some measurements and then use precise x-rays of the head and neck to determine your personal misalignment pattern. It should be noted that each of us varies in our patterns of alignment (or misalignment)—a great deal can be determined by our posture, as well. Once the x-rays are analyzed, Dr. Danielle can perform the delicate NUCCA correction. The adjustments are very subtle and only take a few minutes. The body wants to heal itself, Dr. Danielle notes, and this treatment enables that to happen. Our bodies can change in balance and function when we are in pain, and this can cause immense changes in our lifestyle. Dr. Danielle is passionate about helping people live without pain and suffering, leading her patients to a healthier and happier life. Dr. Danielle did not start out wanting to work in the chiropractic field. She had wanted to be a dentist since she was in eighth grade, and she set her sights on that goal. While she was in school, she made a visit to a chiropractor to seek treatment for recurring migraines and some sports-related problems. The doctor told her she should become a chiropractor instead of a dentist. She had never considered going in that direction, but the doctor’s comments gave her something to think about! Back at school, she hit some roadblocks with her dentistry dreams and decided that it might be better to go in a different direction toward her future. She took a look at the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. She immediately felt it was the right place

for her—it felt like home. Plus, it was only an eighthour drive from her hometown in Michigan, so she could visit easily. Dr. Danielle Stalp, Owner While she was in school in Davenport, she met many like-minded friends who were interested in NUCCA. She was intrigued by the procedures and techniques used in the practice. It did not take long until she was all in! She took the courses, added more study to the base core, and attended conferences on NUCCA. Dr. Danielle has had her own practice since 2019, and she loves what she does. “If I can give people the opportunity to live a more pain-free and meaningful life, that is my greatest reward,” she asserts. “Sometimes, when people come to see me, they are at their wits’ end with pain and suffering. They have tried everything for relief, and nothing has worked. They come to me as a last resort, and it fills me with so much joy if I can help them.” Imagine living for years with chronic pain and fatigue, and then finding more balance and energy in your life with the help of Dr. Danielle and NUCCA! Dr. Danielle’s philosophy is the same in her work as in her life—she treats each patient with a focus on wellness and whole-body improvement. Her dream for the future is to build her practice into a total wellness clinic with a team of practitioners who address all aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Her hope is that people will seek out treatments before they have lost all expectation of a favorable outcome and will understand that living pain-free is an attainable goal. Visit Unity Chiropractic online at unitychiropracticomaha.com to see the surprisingly long and varied list of the conditions that NUCCA has helped. If you’re living with pain, don’t wait! Reach out to Dr. Danielle Stalp and find out how she can help you improve your quality of life. To learn more, please call 402-577-0124. The Green Thumb

The Irresistible Hydrangea A Rainbow of Blooms

By Linda Sutherland

Hydrangeas are enjoying an unprecedented resurgence among novice and seasoned gardeners alike. There is nothing more spectacular than the beautiful blues, greens, purples, pinks, and whites of a hydrangea in full bloom. Their breathtaking flowers (sometimes as big as your head) can literally stop traffic. Personally, hydrangeas always take me back to my grandmother’s garden and that“cottage”feeling of the past. It is easy to see why these romantic plants are enjoying such a comeback, being discovered and rediscovered by many enthusiasts. I have fallen in love with them again and fear only that my other plants may pale in comparison to their splendor. There are nearly 75 species of hydrangeas—surely more than my grandmother could ever have imagined! Of course, some are more familiar to us than others. There are mophead hydrangeas, lacecap hydrangeas, oakleaf hydrangeas, paniculata hydrangeas, and climbing hydrangeas, to name a few. These beauties come with legends and meanings, as well. They are native to many regions and countries, but some people think they were originally discovered in Japan. The story goes that a Japanese emperor gave hydrangeas to the family of a girl he loved to show how much he cared for her. In Victorian times, the hydrangea (especially the white variety) represented boastfulness, bragging, and vanity. In the United States, hydrangeas signify appreciation and are used to commemorate the fourth wedding anniversary.

Speaking of appreciation, I have learned to really be grateful for some of my early mistakes regarding hydrangeas. As soon as I was smitten with their giant blooms, I gave no thought to where they should be planted. Big mistake! I learned quite quickly that they cannot tolerate the blasting afternoon sun and can burn quite easily, leaves and all. I also discovered that when they are first planted, they need careful watering to ensure that they do not wither and die. In dry weather, they really need deep watering, and they do not like hot conditions that much. They are not too picky about soil, but the best is a rich, moist soil that drains easily. Mulch and compost are also their friends. Now, I do not want to scare you off hydrangeas. They are relatively easy to maintain once they are established in

the ground, and some species tolerate drier conditions. The oakleaf hydrangea is a commonly grown variety that is pretty foolproof. Other common types of hydrangeas are the mophead and lacecap. They have the large, globeshaped flowers that I remember from my grandmother’s house. The paniculata has showy white flowers in summer that gradually turn pink. I have also found that leaving the dried blooms on in late fall and early winter makes a beautiful addition to the winter landscape. Hydrangeas also make a strong statement in containers. What an old-fashioned, charming look! A convenience to growing them in pots and planters is that you can cut them back in the fall and overwinter them in your garage or sunroom. If you are short of ground space, container planting is the ticket for you. You can put them on your porch, patio, deck, or balcony, and you can move them anytime you feel they are getting too much sun or too much rain. Keep in mind that hydrangeas will need a large planter—at least two feet wide. They do not like smaller containers because they dry out too quickly. Make sure that the planter has drainage holes at the bottom. The roots will rot if the soil does not have enough drainage. Make sure you use a soil that is designed for container planting. A layer of rocks at the bottom will help the plants drain more efficiently. Hydrangeas in planters will make a big, bold statement on your patio. These large flowers in lime green, blue, pink, white, and purple will be admired by all who visit your yard. Well, you’re almost at the end of the article and you haven’t read anything yet about changing the color of your hydrangea blossoms. Yes, this is a real thing! The pH level of the soil determines the color of the blooms. If your flowers are pink, your soil is alkaline (it has a high pH level). If your blooms are blue, your soil is acidic (it has a low pH level). If you want to change your bloom color from pink to blue, you can add garden sulfur or aluminum sulfate to the soil. You can also purchase fertilizers made specifically for hydrangeas. If you choose to plant hydrangeas (or just walk by someone else’s), you will surely be entranced by their astonishing beauty. These are by far the showiest flowers in my garden. Grandma was right to plant them!

Elder Abuse Prevent, Identify, Report

By Linda Barnes

Elder abuse is a serious problem in the United States. Various government agencies estimate that approximately 10 percent of adults aged 65 and older experience some form of abuse. Some of this abuse goes on in private homes and some in care facilities. Either way, many cases of abuse go unreported due to fear of retaliation or of upsetting family relations. Categories of elder abuse include physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect or abandonment, and financial exploitation. One is more likely to be a victim if there is no family nearby and in case of disabilities or memory issues. Physical abuse may include pushing, hitting, or restraining an elder. It may be an action or inaction that causes harm. Any physical mistreatment, including sexual abuse, needs intervention—abusers rarely stop on their own. Emotional or psychological mistreatment includes a caregiver yelling or threatening an elder. Hurtful words should never be allowed. It may also involve ignoring the elderly person or keeping friends or family away. Neglect occurs when a caregiver does not respond to the person’s needs for health care, food, medication, or hygiene. It also can mean not responding to emotional or social needs. Leaving someone who requires assistance at home alone is another form of neglect. Financial exploitation can involve taking the money or belongings of an elder. Common examples include using a credit

card or bank account without permission. Some cases of financial abuse are committed through manipulation or intimidation to get permission. Caregivers have been found taking social security payments, changing wills or insurance beneficiaries, or acquiring titles to property. Those with elderly loved ones must be on the alert for signs of abuse, no matter who the caregiver is. Whether the elder is receiving home care or is in a care facility, one must step up and intervene. Red flags include lack of hygiene, loss of interest in activities, belongings going missing, trouble sleeping, unexplained cuts or bruises, weight loss, bed sores, or the lack of necessary medical aids. If you suspect abuse, talk to the older person when the two of you are alone. Express your concern and offer to help. This may be uncomfortable, especially if the caregiver is a family member. In a residential care setting, the abuser may be another resident or someone on staff. A helpful online resource is the National Center on Elder Abuse (ncea.acl.gov/resources/state). I clicked on my state on

the map and found a 24/7 hotline to call. There is also contact information for state agencies like Adult Protective Services and Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Prevention is the key when hiring an outside caregiver to attend to a loved one at home. Using a reputable agency that screens and trains caregivers can go a long way toward preventing situations that may harm an older adult. When hiring a non-agency caregiver, you will need to seek recommendations and carefully check references. The same goes for long-term care staff. Be sure that facilities you’re considering are properly staffed; many cases of abuse in nursing homes are derived from neglect caused by inadequate staffing or training. Consulting an attorney versed in elder law is an additional preventive measure when aging loved ones are no longer able to care for themselves. There may be issues to resolve regarding estate planning, guardianship, and health or financial power of attorney. Should some form of elder abuse arise, an attorney specializing in elder law may be able to help resolve the situation through legal means. Law firms versed in personal injury can advocate for a senior who has suffered injury from abuse or neglect in a care facility. They can also guide families through a wrongful death lawsuit. Elder abuse is a difficult subject to discuss. Seniors may be unable or unwilling to report abuse, especially when they are being cared for at home by family members. Some abuse starts out mildly, when caregivers under stress lose patience with their charges, and gets worse over time. If you have a friend or family member who is a caregiver, be supportive! Caregiving is a difficult job, often made more challenging by emotional family connections. Ask what you can do to help. Supporting caregivers is one way to help prevent elder abuse. A watchful eye may be necessary to detect the more subtle signs of abuse. When family is far away, regular phone calls may be helpful. Consider hiring a senior care advocate to check regularly and be your eyes and ears when you can’t be there. Take steps now to prevent elder abuse and know where to turn when abuse is suspected. You might improve the quality of an elder’s life—or even save it. Sources for this article included: aarp. org, nia.nih.gov, ncea.acl.gov, and cdc.gov.

Peak Performance

Lawyer Up! When To Seek Legal Aid

By Maria Harding

There may be several points in life when incomplete paperwork, clumsily worded contracts, or ignorance of state or local laws leaves you vulnerable to disaster. When the stakes are high enough that a misstep could lead to unwanted complications or irreversible damage, consider consulting a lawyer. There are dozens of categories of specialization within the law. The most commonly needed lawyers include counselors in personal injury, workers’ compensation, bankruptcy, business, family law, criminal law, and elder law. Some practices employ multiple attorneys, each with their own area of specialization. Personal injury lawyers are needed if you’re injured due to negligence on the part of an individual or a company and you require financial compensation to help pay for medical treatment or to cover lost wages. Insurance companies do not always offer a fair settlement up front, and negligence can be difficult to prove, particularly if your actions partially contributed to the resulting injury. A personal injury lawyer understands the finer points of the law. If the fault lies with a healthcare professional, the subcategory is known as medical malpractice. If you’re injured at work and you encounter any resistance from your employer’s insurance company, you might need a workers’ compensation lawyer. This is more likely to occur if it’s not entirely clear whether the injury occurred while on the clock, if it involves a long period of recovery time, or if it leaves you

permanently disabled. Not every workers’ compensation claim requires legal intervention; the system is in place to make it straightforward for employees to find support. That said, injured workers should know that attorneys are available to help if they are denied assistance. Bankruptcy is meant to help individuals and certain types of businesses get out of financial knots. A skilled bankruptcy lawyer will guide you and file appropriate paperwork so that the impact is helpful rather than punitive. Hiring a lawyer will help ensure that no detail of this process is overlooked or done incorrectly. After filing is complete, debtors must attend a mandatory hearing. Your attorney will be present in court to represent you. If your business is filing for bankruptcy, there is no guarantee that you won’t lose personal assets, but a bankruptcy lawyer will do everything possible to protect your security or at least buy you time to reorganize. A business lawyer provides legal advice in virtually any area of business. As a small business grows, its owners will need to navigate and comply with local and state laws. A business lawyer

will also be invaluable for handling disputes between workers and employers in areas such as wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment on the job, and workers’ compensation issues. Some lawyers represent only the employer’s interests, while a few will help both sides find common ground. Business lawyers can also write business plans to present to potential investors, research copyright availability of logos, draw up partnership agreements, and deal with complaints or lawsuits that involve the business. Family lawyers can bring logic and impartial guidance to family disputes that become clouded by emotion. Even families with good intentions may experience hurt feelings and misunderstandings without mediation. Family lawyers offer expertise in creating prenuptial agreements, navigating complicated adoptions, outlining divorce and legal separation, administering wills, and resolving custody disputes. Once legal determinations have been made regarding child custody, it is very difficult to alter the arrangement. Therefore, it is imperative to secure capable counsel when you make your initial plans. Anyone accused of a state or federal crime needs a criminal defense attorney. When a crime is committed against society, a prosecutor represents the government in the case and determines what charges will be filed. There are many variables within the court system, and an experienced lawyer will be familiar with the procedures and even the personalities involved. A defense attorney can negotiate deals with prosecutors, reassure a client who is likely experiencing anxiety and embarrassment, hire investigators when necessary, and advise the defendant’s family on what to expect. If you believe that an elderly loved one is being abused or neglected by caregivers, you need an elder law attorney. These lawyers pursue cases of elder abuse and neglect, including wrongful death claims. During a time of such high emotion and stress, the calm attention of an expert is invaluable. Lawyers have the reputation of being prohibitively expensive. In reality, we risk losing more by not relying on their expertise. In addition to what we may stand to lose, allowing a lawyer to share the burden will free up hours that may be better used by continuing our own daily employment. There is also inestimable value in easing the worry and stress that accompany legal issues. Sources for this article included: vocal. media, attorneyhelp.org, and lawyeredu.org. Naturehood.indd 1

Tire Safety Inflate Your Knowledge

By Linda Sutherland

Tires are an essential part of any vehicle—you can’t get far without them! Old, worn-out tires can affect the quality of your ride as well as your gas mileage. When your tires are clamoring to be replaced, you may notice increased noise, more vibration, and reduced gripping on the road. For maximum vehicle safety, it’s important to know what kind of tires your vehicle needs, as well as when to repair or replace them. Follow Your Heart to Choose Your Pet Use Your Head to Choose Your Vet By Jackie Byers

You wouldn’t adopt just any old pet, so why take your furry friend to any old vet? The veterinarian is the doctor for your pet, and the choice of vet should be taken seriously. It’s true that all vets meet some similar requirements, including a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM). They must also earn a state license to practice. Each state sets its own requirements, which generally include rigorous testing, background checks, regular continuing education, and annual renewal. Veterinary technicians are often important parts of the veterinary staff. A tech does not have a DVM but can help both the vet and your pet. It makes sense to have a regular vet nearby—after all, you can’t control when a pet gets sick or injured. Start by asking local friends or neighbors where they take their pets. You can also search online to find animal clinics and animal hospitals in your area. Narrowing your search’s parameters should be based on the type of pet you have. Many vets specialize in certain types of animals. In urban areas, most vets accept household pets like dogs

and cats. In rural areas, large-animal vets are common. They may also treat small domestic animals. If they don’t treat your type of pet, they may have a recommendation for you. If you have an exotic pet, such as a hedgehog or gerbil, or a reptile, such as a lizard or snake, your best bet for finding a vet who can treat your pet knowledgeably is at a large clinic or animal hospital.

When you find a vet who meets the basic requirements, make an appointment for you and your pet to visit. Make a list of questions to ask, including the vet’s education, specialties, and experience with your pet’s breed. If your pet has a pre-existing condition, ask whether the vet is experienced in treating it. Find out if the vet performs in-office surgery. If so, who stays with pets overnight? What happens in an emergency, and what number should you call after hours? Be ready to tell the vet about your pet’s personality and typical behaviors and eating habits. If your pet is new to your family, ask what exercises and equipment, including toys, the vet recommends. Ask to tour the facility, and check for cleanliness. If any pets are kenneled on site, note the animals’ behaviors. If they seem listless or upset, that is worth asking about. Keep in mind that a veterinary office is filled with pets that might be hurt or anxious, so don’t expect it to be a particularly quiet place. On the other hand, even a rowdy office should seem under control and not chaotic. The vet should have a calm manner, listen to your questions, and provide thoughtful answers. Observe the vet interacting with your pet. How does your pet respond? Gentle care in handling your pet, attention to your concerns, and courtesy are hallmarks of a qualified veterinarian. You have many choices, so use your head and choose the vet that’s right for your pet.

Some vets specialize in reptiles. Your gecko or salamander may look healthy to you, but may be showing signs of illness you don’t recognize. For these kinds of pets, regular wellness visits are a good idea. You might want to choose a vet in clinical practice with a critical care specialist on site, especially if you already know that your pet has a serious condition. This may eliminate the need to travel to a far away specialist with a sick animal. Vets for a canine or feline pets are easier to find. It is best to narrow your search by asking specifically for your breed. Labradors and Pekinese have different issues—and size matters. Dr. Marty Becker created the fear-free initiative to make veterinary visits stress-free events, so your pet aren’t terrified and uncooperative at the vet’s office. A fear-free practice can help you teach your pet to tolerate important health care procedures you may perform at home, like giving a pill or a shot, without adverse reactions. Keep the peanut butter handy and remember—just a little dab will do. A small treat right before and after may increase your pet’s willingness to have the treatment as well as the treat. This makes your life easier. Your pet will be a cherished part of you and your family’s life. Getting the proper care with a DVM you can trust means so much. Specializing in Positive Reinforcement Training Positive reinforcement training uses a reward (treats, praise, toys, anything the dog finds rewarding) for desired behaviors. Because the reward makes them more likely to repeat the behavior, positive reinforcement is one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog’s behavior. At Bonafide Dog Academy we strive to meet our client’s needs and expectations through positive reward based training methods.

Cosmetic Dentistry More Than Just Pearly Whites

By Angella A. Arndt

When you hear the phrase “cosmetic dentistry,” what comes to mind? Whitening? Veneers? Chip repairs? Yes, those are all covered. However, you might be surprised to learn that, in addition to improving the look of one’s smile, cosmetic dentistry includes procedures that promote the overall health of teeth. Whether you’d like whiter, straighter teeth or need to have teeth repaired, there are a variety of options available to meet your needs. Cosmetic dentistry does enhance one’s appearance, which leads to improved self-esteem and confidence. If you feel good about your teeth, you’re more apt to smile, and smiling provides benefits such as boosting your mood, reducing blood pressure, increasing endurance, reducing stress, and strengthening the immune system. People who are unwilling to smile because they don’t like the look of their teeth can come across as unfriendly, which can lead to missed opportunity in situations like job interviews. In addition to the aesthetic impact, several cosmetic procedures contribute to maintaining long-term oral health. If left untreated, teeth that are damaged or missing because of tooth decay or trauma can lead to jaw bone loss, shifting teeth, bite irregularities, difficulty chewing, sunken facial appearance, or speech issues. Jaw bone loss occurs when the bone loses stimulation because it no longer supports teeth. Teeth may shift due to gaps between teeth, injury to the face or mouth, grinding teeth, tooth decay, or gum disease, leading to bite irregularities. An improper bite can cause issues such as headaches, muscle pain, and tooth loss. Since our front and back teeth bite and grind food, missing teeth may make it difficult to chew, leading to digestive issues. Missing teeth may also impact one’s facial aesthetic, causing a sunken and aged appearance. Teeth play an important role in speaking, and missing teeth or gaps may result in mispronunciation of words, slurring, or whistling when talking. Fortunately, there are solutions to overcome these difficulties and regain a healthy smile. Teeth whitening is one of the most popular and least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures. Over time, food, drinks, medications, and smoking may stain or discolor teeth. Teeth whitening involves bleaching the surface of teeth to obtain a whiter, brighter appearance. Bonding may be an option to fix chipped, cracked, stained, or broken teeth. Bonding involves applying tooth-colored resin to teeth, which are then “bonded” with a special light. Veneers are thin tooth-colored shells covering the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. Enamel shaping and recontouring can benefit crooked, overlapping, or chipped teeth, minor bite problems, and pits or bulges in the enamel. This procedure involves removing a small amount of the tooth’s surface to obtain a smoother look, with tools similar to those used to polish teeth. 56

August 2021

Procedures such as dental crowns, dental implants, bridges, and braces are also considered forms of cosmetic dentistry. In addition to improving aesthetics, these procedures provide medical benefits. Dental crowns may be used for various reasons, including protecting damaged or weak teeth, restoring broken or worn teeth, holding a dental bridge in place, and covering unshapely or discolored teeth. Preparing for a dental crown involves x-rays, filing of the receiving tooth, an impression of the tooth to create a mold, and placement of a temporary crown until the permanent crown can be placed. Dental implants are an option to replace missing or failing teeth. These implants serve as permanent root substitutes for missing teeth to anchor crowns or replacement teeth. Dental bridges fill gaps created by one or more missing teeth. A “bridge” is created with crowns on either side of the gap supporting the artificial tooth that is cemented in between. Braces correct crowded, crooked, or misaligned teeth. Braces range from the traditional metal braces to clear aligners or invisible braces. To ensure that you are receiving the best treatment and results, choose your cosmetic dentist with care. First, ask family and friends or your general dentist for referrals and read online reviews about patient satisfaction. Next, meet with dentists and ask questions. What are their credentials? Do they engage in continuing education? How much experience do they have in cosmetic dentistry and with the procedure being recommended? Ask to see before and after photos of patients who have had the same work done. Communication is vital—make sure your cosmetic dentist takes the time to answer questions and fully explain the treatment plan. You should feel comfortable with the dentist and the office staff. If you want to improve the appearance of your smile or overcome a challenging dental issue, cosmetic dentistry may be a good option to pursue. You’ll feel better about your teeth and find yourself smiling more often—it’s a win-win situation. Sources for this article included: aaid.com, clevelandclinic. org, and yoursmilebecomesyou.com.

Good Shepherd Funeral Home Caring Support at a Difficult Time

By Linda Sutherland

Caring, kindness, and support, at a sensible cost. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Good Shepherd Funeral Home. They provide families with personalized and dignified services for their loved ones at a time when families need guidance and support without financial hardship. This family-owned business is staffed with an exceptional team of people who understand what family members are experiencing after the death of a loved one. This intensity of emotion is a strain that no one should face alone. The team at Good Shepherd is a compassionate group who will help you give your loved ones the specialized care they deserve. Good Shepherd’s newest location is at 3809 North 90th Street. The funeral directors there are two very capable and caring women: Caroline Page and Maranda Harouff. Caroline is a licensed funeral director with a background in funeral preparation. Maranda’s specialty is funeral arrangements. Upon meeting these two women, I was struck by their kind demeanor and the strength of their mission to support every person who needs their services. Within that mission is the desire to make arrangements for loved ones that are affordable. Caroline and Maranda are dedicated to making the funeral a day of remembrance and celebration for everyone involved. Most of us, understandably, do not like to talk about death. Unfortunately, that means that most of us don’t really plan for it. Then, when someone close to us dies, most of us are at a loss as to what to do first. There are so many details to attend to and decisions to be made! Just when we are at our worst, we are expected to be able to deal with all the particulars. Caroline and Maranda will make sure that every detail is taken care of and that nothing is left out or left to chance. It takes a particular kind of special person to thrive as a funeral director. You must be empathetic, compassionate, kind, and still have a sense of humor. These two women are all these things and so much more. When asked why someone should choose their business over another, Maranda replies, “We want to be a blessing in people’s lives when they need it most.” “Our focus should be on helping the family deal with the loss of a loved one, and to deal with the costs in a fair and reasonable way,” Caroline adds. “The last thing that families need at a time of loss is financial hardship.” The philosophy that these two women have is shared by all their staff. These are remarkable people who help families come together to remember their loved ones in a dignified and celebratory way. The new facility has one large chapel that can be divided into two smaller chapels, based on the needs of each family. They also have a community room that has a

beautiful kitchen to accommodate l-r: Maranda Harouff and Caroline Page, both Funeral Directors catering for large or small gatherings. They offer state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and can stream any service to those who could not attend the funeral. “Personalization is also important while honoring a loved one’s life in a meaningful way. We can personalize urns, caskets and other items with our laser engraver or offer something unique like using our motorcycle coach or our custom-made classic hearse. We are committed to offering new and unique options to our families,’’comments Caroline. “We will do our very best to accommodate everyone’s wishes,” Maranda says, “serving people of all faiths and ethnicities with sensitivity and the highest quality service.” Good Shepherd offers many types of services and many types of remembrances. Visitation services take place at the funeral home, where family and friends gather with the deceased in an open or closed casket to say good-bye. Funeral or memorial services are a time for loved ones to share stories and memories of the deceased—these services are often very personalized and can take place at the funeral home, in a place of worship, or even in a private home. Graveside services are when the deceased’s remains are interred. Any of these services can also take place if you choose cremation for your loved one. Good Shepherd also offers pre-planning services, during which you make arrangements for your own memorial. This can seem awkward at first, but Caroline and Maranda will help you feel at ease, guiding you through the process step by step. What a loving gesture—to arrange your own services so that your family need not worry about the details during a time of grief. When the time comes, the caring team at Good Shepherd will ensure that the service and remembrance are as they should be. Caroline and Maranda encourage us to compare Good Shepherd with other funeral homes and decide for ourselves who can provide the most meaningful services for our loved ones at the most reasonable cost. Home Works

Windows and Doors When to Replace and Who to Hire

By Anne Yankus

If you own a home, chances are good that you’ll end up replacing your windows and doors sooner or later. After all, they are the main entry and exit points in your home, they have moving parts, and they get a lot of use, so they’re bound to wear out over time. Even before they do, you may feel the need to change the look of a room or the whole house with new doors and windows. No matter why you’re making the change, there are several things to consider as you make your replacement plan. The first thing to think about is the cost. Replacement windows can vary widely in cost, from $100 to several hundred dollars per window, plus the cost of labor. To find your general budget, walk through every room and count the windows—you may have more than you thought! Door replacements can cost up to a couple thousand dollars, including labor. Next, you’ll want to explore your various style options. Windows come in a wide variety of styles, but some of the most popular styles are single-hung, double-hung, sliding, casement/ awning, picture, architectural shapes, acrylic block, hopper, bay, garden, and impact windows. Doors can come in a nearly infinite variety of styles. Aside from the typical pre-manufactured styles you can purchase at the store, many door makers offer customization through special orders. Regardless of what style you choose, the most commonly used door materials are wood, steel, fiberglass-composite,

and aluminum. You should also consider door hardware and any smart home security tech and locks that you want to include. If you weren’t already sold on the idea of replacing your windows and doors for aesthetic reasons, you should definitely consider changing them out for the energy-efficiency benefits! Energy.gov reports that 25 to 30 percent of a home’s energy bill can be traced directly to heat gain/loss from the windows, so it’s imperative to make sure your windows and doors are up-todate with the latest in energy efficiency. All new windows should have Energy Star and National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) labels on them detailing that model’s energy rating. If you live in a colder climate, look for gas-filled windows with low-e coatings to reduce heat loss and a low U-factor for thermal resistance. For warmer climates, check for windows with coatings that will reduce heat gain and have low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) scores.

Doors will have similar energy rating labels on them. If you’re really attached to your current front door but still want to make your home more energy-efficient, you do have the option of installing a high-quality storm door in addition to your existing front door. Warranties on windows and doors typically fit into one of three categories: lifetime, limited lifetime, and timeframe. Lifetime warranties will cover your doors and windows as long as they’re subject to just normal wear and tear. Limited lifetime warranties cover specific parts of your fixtures (but often not the labor to replace them). Timeframe warranties, as the name implies, will expire after a certain number of years. The cost of labor has come up a couple of times in this article already, and that’s because replacing your doors and windows is really not a job you want to try and handle yourself. The last thing you want is to completely nullify all the benefits of your brand-new windows because they were installed improperly and are now leaking air. Fortunately, many window manufacturers provide their own installation specialists. Choosing your installation professional may be as easy as picking a manufacturer that specializes in the type of windows you’re purchasing. Love Has No Race - sixth.indd 1 When your installation options aren’t quite so cut-and-dried, you’ll want to get at least three detailed bids. Keep in mind that detailed bids include a full workup on any and all parts, products, and labor, as well as a breakdown of their pricing. Your bid should also include specific start and finish dates. Highly detailed bids— always in writing!—can help prevent misunderstandings between you and the contractors later on. Some additional things you’ll want to ask prospective contractors about are their liability insurance (which will cover any damages caused during installation) and how much money they expect to be paid up front. A good contractor will only require 20 to 30 percent of the total cost at the start of the job, allowing you to pay the remainder as the work progresses or upon the completion of the project. Replacing your doors and windows — Shanna Paopao, PT, doesn’t have to be a monumental task. With BodyWise Therapy a little bit of research and the right profesOwner sionals, you can have everything looking and feeling great in no time at all. The Tooth Doc Anxiety-Free Family Dentistry!

By Janette Calabro

Referring to family dentistry as “anxiety-free” may sound too good to be true, but that’s just what you’ll find at The Tooth Doc. Drs. Leslie and Dan Ellingson have a knack for creating a very relaxing environment. This husband-and-wife team will take away the worry by listening first, sharing your options, and then explaining the plan. They cater to their patients’ needs with the newest technology, the best choices, and flawless communication. Longtime patient Sally says, “It was the best experience I’ve ever had at the dentist. They made me feel so comfortable and relaxed! When I walked in, they not only asked how I felt but also really listened! It is a different, very relaxed world there.” Dr. Leslie says that the communication is seamless at The Tooth Doc because all involved parties (patient, doctor, and staff) are under the same roof. “We sit side by side to review x-rays and clinical photos,” says Dr. Leslie. “We can examine and evaluate the patient during a single appointment.” Take dental implants, as an example. Implants consist of an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jaw and holds a replacement tooth or bridge. At most dental offices, the many pieces of the implant process require help from different people who work at different offices or labs. At The Tooth Doc, it’s a one-stop-shop. “The collaborative treatment at The Tooth Doc is an incredible convenience and timesaver for patients,” Dr. Leslie explains. “The traditional implant method is quite cumbersome. It would involve the dentist planning the implant, referring the patient to an Orthodontist, and sending x-rays or photos by email. The patient then contacts the Orthodontist, taking time for another consultation.” All that is before the patient even decides whether or not to go forward with the implant! “This process can be frustrating and time-consuming for everyone involved.” Like most technologies, explains Dr. Dan, the dental implant process is much more streamlined today. If you’re missing a tooth, or even multiple teeth, he can gather information and digitally plan the whole implant procedure on the computer first. “I can obtain a digital 3-D CAT scan of the patient’s full face and a video scan of their teeth with a special camera. Then, I combine the two to create a digital model of the patient,” says Dr. Dan. “I use our 3-D printer to fabricate a guide that will allow me to place the implant in exactly the same spot that I planned on the computer. No guessing—just predictability. This increases success rates while reducing complications because I’m technically performing the surgery on the computer before the day of the surgery.” Dr. Dan’s philosophy with cosmetic surgery is that he is conservative or aggressive based on the needs and desires of 62

each patient. “When it comes to cosmetics, I Drs. Leslie and Dan Ellingson have experienced great results and happy patients with fairly simple whitening procedures. Brightening a person’s smile a few shades, with a non-invasive procedure that increases their self-confidence, is as good as it gets. Sometimes, however, whitening may need to be combined with more complicated procedures to mask dark teeth, fix misaligned teeth, or even change the shape of the teeth themselves.” He uses bonding, porcelain veneers, and gum tissue reshaping for good results. Dr. Dan wants all patients to be aware of their dental plan benefits. “I stress the word ‘benefits’ because dental insurance is not really insurance at all,” he explains. “In reality, dental insurance acts as a coupon that reduces a patient’s out-of-pocket costs.” “Our goal,” Dr. Dan continues, “is to educate and help the patient understand why we are recommending a particular treatment option, even though it may not be covered, while offering financing options to reduce the financial roadblock.” Payment options at The Tooth Doc include CareCredit, LendingClub, and The Tooth Doc’s own Dental Health Club (a low monthly fee that includes routine cleanings, x-rays, exams, and a 15 percent discount on any dental treatment). What makes the Dental Health Club so great, says Dr. Dan, is that it removes the waiting, maximums, denials, and surprises that you might encounter with traditional dental plans. Dental health is just as important as something like heart health, concludes Dr. Dan. “Your teeth are not ‘just teeth.’ Your oral health is crucial for speaking, breathing, eating, and communicating. Scientific evidence shows that your oral health and systemic health are connected. Your teeth are body parts—take good care of them! Prevention is key because nothing is quite as good as what God gave you.” For compassionate, anxiety-free dental care for the whole family, reach out to The Tooth Doc at 402-704-3482 or 2thdoc.org. Their office is located at 15751 West Dodge Road, in Omaha.

Allergies?

Runny nose, nasal congestion, irritation in the throat, ears, and eyes, or headaches? See What Sets Us Apart! • We will evaluate and treat these problems both medically and surgically. In conjunction with United Allergy, we provide testing and desensitization of patients for their major allergens. Therapy can be done in your home with personalized instructions. • We also treat secondary to allergy problems, including acute sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, and acute and chronic ear disease, which may require surgical intervention. Prior to any testing or therapy, a thorough history and an examination of the head and neck is obtained. If indicated, the appropriate x-rays are obtained. This ensures there are no other underlying problems which could be the cause of or contributing to these symptoms. • Our goal is to treat each patient for their individual needs and help them live a healthy life. Positive Perspective

Open or Closed? Changing Your Mind

By Janet Van deWalle

Do you have an open mind or a closed mind? If I had been asked this question a few years back, I would have immediately tagged myself as very open-minded. I felt that I was receptive to listening to others’ opinions. That being said, I really didn’t like disagreements. In fact, I avoided them like the plague. To do so, I would take over a conversation, share my thoughts, and move to the next topic at hand. “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”—George Bernard Shaw I’ve now learned that most of us would identify ourselves as open-minded individuals…even those of us whose minds are quite closed. Why? No one likes the label of being narrow-minded or closed-minded. It just feels bad! In the past, when I was told, “You’re being closed-minded,” my wall went up, my heels dug in, and I absolutely stopped listening and learning. “It is never too late to give up your prejudices.” —Henry David Thoreau Psychologists have discovered that human beings can have two mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. The mindset that we are working out of will determine how we deal with challenges, obstacles, efforts, and criticisms. “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” —Albert Einstein

Several years ago, I began to notice that I really wasn’t open to much of what anyone else had to say. I didn’t listen well. I told, instead of asking. I wanted others to understand me, instead of me wanting to understand them. Yup…I definitely had a fixed mindset. “A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open.” —Frank Zappa I began to look inside myself and question beliefs I had held for decades, about everything in my life. Over the years, I had made decisions about who I was, what I believed, and where my life was headed. I had become static in my thinking. “Fear is static that prevents me from hearing myself.” — Samuel Butler I began to practice listening. I asked a lot of questions…and really listened to the answers. If the conversation became tense, I didn’t run and hide. I asked more questions and listened more. Over time, I began to change. I began to learn again. I began to open my mind. Now, I have hope. “Once you do away with the idea of people as fixed, static entities, then you see that people can change, and there is hope.” —Bell Hooks
