Home Sweet Home! Here comes the sun…yippee! I feel so alive when spring arrives. It’s as if someone has plugged me into a brand-new electric socket! Omaha is such a wonderful city, particularly this time of year. We are so fortunate to have the change of the seasons. The winter can be a challenge, but spring is worth it all. Before we know it, we’ll be sitting outside on our patios and enjoying the sun. As I write this, Daylight Savings Time starts next Sunday, and I can’t wait. I believe we all appreciate that extra hour of daylight this time of year. Manny and I were fortunate enough to be able to get out of town for a few days and went to Florida. We had a great time. My sister, Pam, and her husband, Ken, joined us. It was perfect weather—a great break from the yo-yo weather we’ve experienced in Omaha over the last few months. What we both realized, however, was how great it was to come home. The house that I have lived in for 24 years has become “our home.” Manny has worked very hard at creating a place that we both love. It’s cozy and welcoming. When he first moved in, there were lots of “projects” that had been put on the back burner since I had been widowed. Manny has taken them all on and is going through the house very methodically to make it the way it should be. Manny is the most methodical person I have ever met. I don’t know if it’s his military training or if it’s just who he is. He has taught me the benefits of slowing down and taking one step at a time. That is a different way of doing things than I have ever done. I am somewhat scattered…okay, at times, a lot scattered! Watching him reminds me of the story of the rabbit and the tortoise. Remember who won that race? When I get really scattered, he laughs and calls me Lucy. I then call him Ricky. Yup…that’s who we are sometimes! But we are learning about one another and growing in our marriage every single day. Before I sign off, I want to mention that this month is Roxy Orr’s 34th anniversary with Women’s Edition. She and I have been through it all together. Thirty-four years is a very long time in any relationship. She has been there for me and I have tried to always be there for her. Thank you, Roxy, I couldn’t have done Women’s Edition without you! We’ll talk next month!

kiwis, 3 diced green onions, 2 Tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 1/4 cup of dried cranberries, 3 Tablespoons of honey, 2 Tablespoons of finely chopped fresh mint, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir and let sit at room temperature while cooking the chops. Broil or grill the lamb chops, 4–5 minutes on each side, until done. Serve with the salsa and a big salad or cooked spring vegetables. Serves 4.

Air Fryer Lamb Chops Mix 2 Tablespoons of plain, full-fat Greek yogurt with 2 Tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon of lemon zest. Add 1 Tablespoon of Greek seasoning (in the spice aisle) or make your own by blending 2 teaspoons of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1/8 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Brush the mixture on both sides of 4 lamb chops and let sit for 20 minutes. Preheat the air fryer at 390 for 2 minutes. Add the chops and fry for 5 minutes, flip, and cook for another 7–10 minutes. Check the temperature—you want 125 degrees for rare or 135 degrees for medium rare. Remove to serving platter and cover to rest for 2 minutes. (Chops with this sauce can also be oven-baked or grilled.) Ham with Apricot Glaze Place a ham in a large baking dish and bake according to the directions on the package. While the ham is baking, prepare the glaze. Mix 1/4 cup of apricot preserves with 1/4 cup of orange juice, 2 Tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 Tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves. Brush the glaze over the ham during the last 30 minutes of baking time. Korean Barbecued Beef Trim the fat off of a 1-pound sirloin steak and cut across grain

into 1/8-inch slices. Make a marinade of 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 3 Tablespoons of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of toasted sesame oil, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper, 3 chopped green onions, and 2 cloves of minced garlic. Place the marinade in a bowl or zip-top bag. Add the beef, toss to coat, seal, and refrigerate for 1 hour. Drain the beef, discarding marinade. Stir-fry in a large skillet (add a bit of oil) for 2–3 minutes. Serve over cooked rice.

Chocolate Nests In a saucepan, heat 1 (14-ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk and 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips until melted. Put a 10-ounce bag of chow mein noodles (or crispy rice cereal) into a large bowl. Pour the chocolate mixture in and toss to coat. Line 2 cookie sheets with foil. Drop the mixture onto the foil 1/4 cup at a time. Form into nests by rounding them and indenting the middle (spray or lightly oil your fingers so they don’t stick). Fill the centers (gently push down) with mini jelly beans or speckled egg candies. Cool in the refrigerator to set. Lemon Custard Bars Juice about 5 lemons (you will need 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons of juice) and set aside. Mix 12 Tablespoons of soft butter with 1 and 1/2 cups of flour and 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. Grease the bottom (and 1/4 inch up the sides) of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Press the crust into the baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, then take the crust out of the oven and lower the oven temperature to 300 degrees. Mix together 3 Tablespoons of flour, 3 cups of sugar, the lemon juice, and 6 large eggs (beaten). Blend well. Pour into the hot crust and return to the oven. Bake at 300 degrees for 35 minutes or until set. Refrigerate. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut and serve.

Fresh Denim Trends for Spring Style for Everyone!

By Holly Bell

While we have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring, our favorite stores have been hard at work stocking up on all the new fresh denim trends. There have not been this many cool new denim styles since the skinny jean crept into our closets. I personally have never been a jean addict, but lately I have found myself hunting in stores and online for the latest in denim looks. The great thing about denim is that it can go anywhere now! From the office to a cocktail party, denim can meet your demand for comfort and style. There are five basic new jean trends for spring and summer 2022. Let’s take a look! 1. The Slouchy Silhouette. This fabric is ultra-soft and usually light and thin— perfect for warmer temperatures. The leg is loose fitting and usually straight. You’ll often find them listed as “Boyfriend Jeans.” What do you pair with this softer silhouette? A shorter top is in order (a tucked-in look works, too). Belts are back in a big way this season and look great with this high rise cut of jean. Avoid anything oversized or long, as this silhouette needs a more fitted shape on the top. Also, this jean is worn at a longer length, almost hiding your shoe. 2. The All-American Relaxed. Sometimes referred to as the “Mom” jean, this 1990s high-waisted beauty works for everyone. This style has always been comfortable, but the advent of stretch fabrics makes it even more comfy. As with the other loose-fitting jeans, it looks best with a fitted top or jacket. This jean is worn a little shorter than the “boyfriend” look, with the length hitting the top of the shoe. 3. The Dark Indigo Wash. Faded ’90s washes have been wildly popular for the last couple of years, along with distressed fabric and holes. I’m happy to say that this season’s spring runways featured dark indigo denim with no destruction or tears. The darker washes are perfect for a dressier look and are generally a straight leg, high-waist jean that looks great with a heel, platform, or dressy slide-style shoe. The jean is worn ankle length and creates a long, slim, refined look. This is great for work, dinner, or really any occasion where

10

April 2022

www.womensedition.com

you want to look polished. 4. The Flared Leg. Yes, it’s back! This time around, it is not quite so exaggerated. The modern take on this trend is more fitted around the hip and thigh, flaring out from calf to hem. This silhouette looks stylish but not over the top, and it looks great in a dark wash. Also seen on runways were the shorter, cropped flares that hit mid-calf. People with long legs are likely to succeed at carrying off that look. 5. The Super Wide Leg. This style is usually made from a very soft, triple-washed denim in a faded wash with no destruction. This is a rather exaggerated style and is sure to turn heads! It is worn with a very long inseam that can even reach the ground. This style can be dressed up or down and looks particularly good with a close-fitting or tucked-in top or even a short jacket. Don’t forget the fashion rule of thumb that if the bottom half is loose, the top needs to be more fitted. The opposite is also true. Jean jackets are also on trend. For a maximum impact denim look, pair a denim pant with a matching jean jacket. Matching looks are really hot this year, with matching sweatsuits, yoga wear, and denim at the top of the “gotta have it” list. Denim is big in all sportswear this coming season. Jean skirts both mini and maxi are back in the mix, along with denim shirts, jumpsuits, and dresses. There are so many ways to get your denim fix this year! There is one rule when shopping for denim jeans. You must be in the mood to try on several pairs. Sizing varies widely, so you can wear a 6 in one brand and a 10 in another. It’s also important to see where they hit height-wise, whether you’re looking for a cropped flare, a long and lean dark wash, or a super wide that brushes the floor. Pick a free day when you can leisurely try on the new looks in denim until you find the perfect pair. Once you find them, you’ll know it was definitely worth the effort! A great pair of jeans is the perfect building block for any number of spring and summer looks.

A Woman’s Work

The Easter Parade

Traumas from the Bunny

By Sharon Knierim

As children, we celebrated Easter the way nearly everyone else did. With candy! Not coming from a particularly religious family, we did know the meaning of “resurrection” and that something awful had happened a few days prior to Easter Sunday, but it was difficult for us to wrap our minds around what the events in the Holy Lands had to do with the Easter Bunny. The Holy Lands were remote to us, but rabbits….we understood those. There were lots of rabbits hopping around our farm. Who knows? One of them just might have been the Easter Bunny himself. “Sure,” we reassured ourselves, “he hops around here all year long, performing reconnaissance missions while he checks our behavior.” Of course, we didn’t know who to trust. Any one of those rabbits could have been THE rabbit. One of our little neighbor girls actually broke down at the supper table one evening when her mother announced that they were eating a rabbit that her brother had shot! Does it sound as if this holiday was driven by fear? Do you think the Easter Bunny traumatized all of us? Maybe we were just overreacting and allowing ourselves to be frightened. You know, there is nothing crazier than a neighborhood full of kids starting rumors!

Needless to say, confusion reigned as we worked to reconcile these two Easter icons. Admittedly, when we became overly confused, we turned to the candy. For some reason, we could connect with putting out a little wicker basket filled with excelsior and finding it filled to the brim with grocery store candies the next morning. The year I turned 10 years old, my own birthday occurred on Sunday, April 10. Talk about excitement! But not so fast. Our neighbor, Shirley, was turning 11 on April 9, and she was having a big birthday party at her house just down the road. Shirley was from a huge family of kids, and they really

knew how to have a good time. All the neighborhood kids attended and had a wonderful time. It felt like I was being usurped by Shirley. Could I have been pouting that afternoon? Yes, I am sure that I was, and I probably made a real fool out of myself. In truth, I was really jealous of Shirley and her party and all the gifts and attention showered on her. As part of the festivities, Shirley’s mom had boiled dozens and dozens of eggs, which were decorated by all her children. Those beautiful eggs had been well hidden in the yard. At the whistle, we exploded out of the front door into the yard and began seeking them in every nook and cranny. It was a huge egg hunt. I found only one egg, and it was already cracked. Shucks. In my nastiness, I left the party and started walking home. If it weren’t for one of Shirley’s brothers, I would have garnered the reputation as the grumpiest kid in the township. That boy had the good grace to bring me back to the party to understand what Shirley’s party was about. On the next Easter, there was no confusion about our birthdays and Easter. The events were spaced farther apart, with Easter in March. Our teachers decided that we must have an Easter parade. Everyone made an Easter bonnet, which we wore as we paraded through the entire school building, singing “The Easter Parade,” which is a nice song. By this age, I was used to having things my way and always acting as a leader, so I was absolutely stunned and blown out of the water when my Easter bonnet creation did not win first place. I don’t remember who won the prize for that event, but I’m sure I never spoke to her again. Are you beginning to think I needed a trip to the wood shed? Now, of course, I do understand the message of Easter. We have forgone the candy and the excelsior and, of course, the price of eggs makes egg hunts a thing of the past. Becoming a diabetic excludes all those candy treats, but the real message has broken through. There are no terrorist bunnies or handmade non-winner bonnets clouding things. After all these years, I wonder if I owe Shirley an apology for being such a brat at her party. Well, here goes: Sorry, Shirley, but that should have been my party. Just kidding. I think I’ll give her a call. Happy Easter to everyone.

Vantage Point

Great Finds Consignment What Will You Find?

By Toni Arndt

During the past two years, most of us have spent more time at home, taking the opportunity to assess our surroundings. As you look around your home, do you find yourself ready for a different look? Are you considering new furniture or décor? Of course, we sometimes prefer to buy new or custom-built pieces. Before you go that route, consider that the perfect items for your home may already be out there, at very reasonable“like new”prices. You can find out at Great Finds Consignment.

Born and raised in the Midwest, owner Julie Twedt worked in her father’s grocery store from a young age, learning what it was like to have a family business. During her youth, she recalled her mother and aunt having garage sales that were well attended by local college students and city residents. “Garage sales taught me that furniture and other items are valuable resources, and we loved that we were repurposing and recycling things for other people.” It was only natural, then, that Julie and her husband, Jerrold, would eventually be in the business of repurposing furniture and home items. They opened Great Finds in 2005, and it has been a labor of love for Julie and Jerrold, as well as their son, Brad Twedt, and their daughter, Darcy Cottone. This gallery showcases gently used home furniture and décor. The gallery sells items on consignment, meaning they carry things brought in by people who want to sell them and who receive a portion of proceeds when the items sell. “We take items that we know our customers would like and use,” Julie affirms. “We carry great quality items, as evidenced by our regularly changing inventory.” That’s a good point for customers—if you see something you like, grab it before it’s gone! Great Finds carries pieces for every room of the home, in decorating styles that include vintage, traditional, and contemporary. Sofas, chairs, dining sets, coffee tables, headboards, dressers, and nightstands are a sampling of the available furniture. Customers will also find lamps, decorative pillows, mirrors, pictures, silk flower arrangements, and modern glassware. Unexpected finds can include jewelry cases, music boxes, and other unique accessories. For those interested in consigning items, the process is straightforward. Sellers may email or bring photos of furniture to the gallery. Once accepted, the seller sets up an appointment to deliver the furniture. “We can recommend movers, if needed,” Julie advises, “and we are happy to help load or unload items at the gallery.” For decorative items, sellers call the gallery to set up an appointment, and they may bring 15 to 20 items to each appointment for consideration. Items remain on the showroom floor for three months. Items are marked down 10 percent at the beginning of the second and third months, if they have not sold. Sellers receive 18

April 2022

50 percent of the final selling price, and consignor payments are L-R Jerrold and Julie Twedt, mailed monthly. After three months, sellers may reclaim their unsold items Darcy Cottone and Brad Twedt or the gallery will donate them to a worthy cause. Why choose Great Finds Consignment? The gallery carries “room-ready” items from non-smoking homes in a warm and welcoming environment. “We want people to enjoy looking around, and we are happy to provide assistance or answer questions,” Julie says. “We think customers will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of items we have available.” “Great Finds has become my go-to place for quality furniture and home décor,” says customer Jeanne. “I have purchased and consigned items for over 15 years, and I am never disappointed with things bought or consigned at this wonderful store. All of the staff are professional, friendly, helpful, and honest, whether you are browsing, purchasing, or bringing in items for consignment. They are meticulous in recordkeeping and inventory, making the consignment process flawless and pleasant. Ample parking is available, with pickup at the front and back door, making shopping convenient and effortless. If you have not been to Great Finds, I would highly recommend visiting their showroom. I think you will agree that it is truly one of the best-kept secrets in Omaha!” Julie and her family love working with people. “We appreciate the opportunity to repurpose items that people no longer need. It’s a joy to see customers find the right lamp, sofa, or whatever home item they need. The gift of consignment shopping is finding quality items that are reasonably priced. If you have never been consignment shopping, we invite you to give us a try.” Great Finds Consignment is located at 13448 Old L Street, in Omaha. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can find them online at greatfindsconsignment.com or reach them by telephone at 402-895-5455.

Orthodontics for All Ages

Protecting Oral Health and Development

By Janette Calabro

Orthodontics are important for everyone! We often think of straightening teeth as something we do for children and teens, but adults have orthodontic needs, as well. Though the techniques are similar, the concerns and complications are different for young people whose bones are still growing. Let’s take a look at the best options to keep teeth straight and healthy at any age. The field of orthodontics addresses the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of poorly positioned teeth. Orthodontists are dentists who have undergone special training to treat the issues of malpositioned teeth, misaligned bite patterns, and tooth abnormalities. These dental professionals have completed the American Board of Orthodontics Specialty Certification exams. An improved appearance isn’t the only reason we need this specialty—teeth must also function properly. When teeth and jaws are aligned, biting, chewing, and speaking come easier and good oral health is more likely. Crooked teeth often decay faster than straight teeth, and gum disease is a higher possibility, too. Significant jaw misalignment may eventually require surgical treatment. Since children aren’t fully grown, the process for aligning their teeth or jaw is quicker and easier than it is for adults. Children are unlikely to suffer from more adult problems like gingivitis or gum disease, bone loss, or inadequate blood supply because of insufficient bone at the teeth’s roots. Because children are still growing, their bones are more malleable, which makes teeth easier to move. Ideally, start the orthodontic process as early as possible. Children’s orthodontic problems are often inherited, but sometimes treatment is needed to address damage from bad habits like thumb-sucking or mouth breathing. Dental disease can be a factor, too, often a result of poor dental hygiene, lack of proper nutrition, or a physical trauma. Children often need braces to correct crooked or overlapping teeth. Teeth may be overcrowded. Top and bottom jaws may be different sizes, causing misalignment called overbite or underbite (depending on whether the upper or lower jaw is in the front). Misaligned teeth can chip or wear down. When that happens, a child’s tooth can break and become susceptible to infection. Crooked teeth don’t just cause chewing problems; they can also cause breathing issues, affecting a child’s psychological well-being and social acceptance. If your child’s bite doesn’t quite align, a painful condition called TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) can affect jaw muscles and facial nerves that control jaw movement. TMD can be the result of an injury or a misaligned jaw. TMD can also be caused from a ball-and-socket displacement caused by clenching teeth. Tooth grinding, whether it happens when a person is asleep or awake, can tighten facial and jaw muscles, making it harder to eat, drink, and talk. It also wears down tooth enamel, making cavities more likely. Common symptoms of TMD include 20

April 2022

jaws that feel locked, facial pain, difficulty chewing, toothaches, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, headaches and neck aches, jaw pain, and sensitive teeth without a clear cause. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) advises that there is no “right” chronological age that orthodontic treatment should begin, but that children should undergo orthodontic evaluation by age seven years. Timing of treatment “is determined by the type of problem that the child has or may be developing and the child’s stage of dental development. Some patients may require tooth movement only, while others may need help with guiding the growth of their jaws, or to correct a sucking habit or abnormal swallowing pattern that can reshape the bone.” The best way to time treatment, then, is based on the individual who needs it. Seven years is a great age to get a head start with a baseline evaluation for expected orthodontic treatment. At age seven, children usually have both baby and permanent teeth, and their jaws are still growing. Early treatment beginning at age seven can help problems from developing over time. Talk with your child’s orthodontist for the best advice for your child, since some experts recommend active treatment between ages nine and 14. Some parents hope that their child’s teeth will straighten as they grow, but that’s not usually the case. Though teeth do move as a child’s jaw grows, permanent teeth are much larger than baby teeth, so they need a lot more room. Permanent teeth, including molars, are normally final at age 12. By then, front teeth may have become crowded and misaligned. Braces are a great option, and sometimes kids are excited to get them! Tooth straightening is so common that even self-conscious tweens and teens find braces socially acceptable. Consider different types of braces for children, among other options for correcting the teeth and jaws. Traditional braces are made from metal or stainless steel. Steel ties hold the brackets in place, and kids can choose colored bands for personalization. These rubber bands, also called elastics, are used to apply force to move teeth and jaws into optimal position. (Just having braces in your mouth doesn’t technically hurt, though each adjustment will bring some aching.) Kids can get creative with elastics, choosing their favorite color or changing out colors for holidays or school spirit. Some braces are made from ceramic, plastic, or a combination of materials. These can be beneficial for people with allergies to certain types of metal. Wires are often made from nickel-titanium or copper-titanium, which last longer

www.womensedition.com

and need fewer adjustments. Invisible trays (often a favorite of adults) can be used for children, too. These custom-made, clear removable trays gradually pressure teeth into their correct position, without steel braces or wires. There’s also the option of temporary anchorage devices (TADs), which have fixed mini screws about six to 12 millimeters long. TADs are temporarily anchored to bones in the mouth, applying force to move and straighten teeth. These devices are becoming more common, as they are more predictable and often provide better anchor control. Head gear can be beneficial because the appliance is attached to the braces and is removable. This type of dental appliance is usually worn only overnight. Retainers keep teeth in place after braces are removed. Once teeth settle into their new positions, the retainer stops them from shifting. Some are removable, while others are bonded behind the teeth. Most are made from clear plastic combined with metal wires, or rubber, but kids can add some fun with customized options such as glow-in-the-dark retainers. The length of time that kids need to wear braces or devices varies depending on the depth of the correction and the child’s growth. In many cases, 18 to 36 months is sufficient, although the patient must cooperate with wearing and maintaining devices as expected. (A retainer only works while it’s in your mouth!) Some orthodontists recommend ongoing retainer wear at least one night per week to preserve your child’s straightened teeth. Once the retainer comes off, changes to teeth should be expected. Certain foods are off

Members MD.indd 1

limits for people who are wearing braces or other corrective devices. Popcorn, chewy candy like caramels or gummies, gum, nuts, and ice are all on the no-no list. Some adults who need orthodontic treatment may hesitate because they think braces will make them look like teenagers and have a negative effect on their professional image. Orthodontists have worked to address this issue by developing invisible trays that move teeth. These removable aligners are custom-made for your teeth, and you get new ones as your teeth move. They can provide orthodontic treatment without the visuals of traditional braces, leaving you with a healthy, professional smile. Orthodontic treatment is an important part of a person’s oral health! Treatments such as braces and other alignment devices start with an exam, x-rays, and a conversation with an orthodontist about which treatments would work best for you or your child. For kids, braces can correct cosmetic imperfections and improve the jawline for better symmetry early on. That paves the way for children to function naturally, with fewer oral challenges down the road into adulthood. Teeth are guided with applied pressure from braces to straighten them. When the braces are removed, the barrier is also removed, and teeth tend to shift. Ask your trusted orthodontist if further treatment will be needed after braces. Protect your oral health and your investment! Sources for this article included: aaoinfo.org, webmd.com, healthline.com, and healthy children.org.

Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Good Looks

Face Time

Wake Up Your Skin With a Facial

By Loretta McCollum

Spring is the season of renewal and rejuvenation—a time for fresh looks in everything from our wardrobe to our skin. A good facial will awaken your skin from its winter hibernation and will go a long way toward revitalizing your overall appearance. A facial provides many benefits, including improvement in the look, feel, and health of your skin. First and foremost, a facial provides a deep, thorough cleansing. Just one session results in a noticeable difference. Your face will appear more glowing and radiant. Exfoliation is a key component of any facial. Unless old skin cells are sloughed off, it’s difficult for the skin to replace them with new ones. Exfoliation removes those dead skin cells, enabling new cells to grow. A facial is also a good stress reducer. The face contains many pressure points, which are frequently massaged during a facial. This decreases both physical and psychological stress. Massaging any part of the body will improve blood circulation to that area. As circulation improves, skin cells take on more oxygen and nutrients. This accelerates cell regeneration, replaces dead skin cells at a faster rate, and gives the skin a more youthful experience. Outside pollutants and contaminants can make the skin dull and dry it out. Regular facials detoxify and tighten the skin, helping it to retain moisture. Most facials contain ingredients rich in antioxidants, essential oils, and herbal extracts,

which accelerate the detoxification process. Even if we take care to protect our skin from environmental damage, our skin naturally becomes less elastic as we age because the body’s collagen production decreases. Facials stimulate collagen production, improving skin’s texture and elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Exposure to harmful sun rays can cause increased but uneven melanin production, leading to a blotchy complexion. The right facial can even out the skin. A facial provides the proper nutrients to brighten your skin and bring it back to normal. A good facial will also reduce undereye bags and dark circles by providing hydration and nutrients that target the delicate skin in that area. There are many types of facials available. How do you determine which one is best for you? Schedule a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist or licensed aesthetician. A professional can identify a facial treatment that is suitable for your skin type and that will address the issues you’re having with your skin.

Maximizing Your Space Multifunctional Rooms

By Robyn V. Powell

As families grow and change, what they need from their homes changes, too. Whether adjusting to working from home or downsizing after retirement, most people are always looking to maximize their space. Many of today’s homeowners are choosing to optimize their existing spaces by incorporating multifunctional features so they can enjoy various activities in the same physical space. Re-imagining spaces as multifunctional rooms is easier than you think! With a little thought and planning, you can find clever ways for your existing spaces to work harder without having to call in the builders. The process begins with assessing your needs, looking at your home’s floor plan, and deciding which rooms can best adapt to new functions. If you’re fortunate enough to have an open floor plan, you’re ahead of the game! Without walls to separate the space into delegated rooms, one space essentially serves as living area for relaxing, working, cooking, and dining. An open plan lends itself to multipurpose spaces. The trick is to create zones with natural divisions that make the room feel like distinct areas. Without thoughtful intent, open plans are at risk of appearing chaotic. Furniture and flooring arrangements are the keys to ensuring that each zone’s design works on its own while maintaining continuity. The proper placement of furniture facilitates the natural flow within the space and also makes the purpose of each zone obvious, with a focal point that distinguishes whether the zone is designed for work, play, or relaxation.

For more traditional homes that feature distinct rooms, creating multipurpose spaces is about maximizing the space in a way that blends form and function. Smart furnishings are your best tools when it comes to flexibility and saving space. Make the most of your space with furniture and cabinetry designed with hidden multipurpose functions. For example, consider a dining table that seamlessly converts into a desk equipped with features for storage, power, and connectivity. Built-in bench seating for kitchen dining could also function as a great nook for curling up with a good book. When space is tight, the last thing you need is clutter. Good storage is essential in multifunctional spaces. Choose stylish storage solutions to streamline your spaces, such as an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table or a console that serves as a functional work station by day and a side table for entertaining at night.

Working from home is a trend that’s here to stay. Many homes, however, lack a dedicated room to serve as an at-home office. That doesn’t mean you can’t be productive at home! A guest bedroom can easily share the same physical space with a home office. A vanity or dressing table with seating can double as a desk and office chair. If you’re likely to use the space as an office more often than as a guest room, consider a Murphy bed so the office can double as a guest room when needed! If your budget allows, convert a loft space or unfinished space over the garage into an office, adding both square footage and value to your home. If limited floor space doesn’t allow for a kids’ playroom or study area, look to multifunctional furnishings. Autism Awareness Month A Spectrum of Understanding

By Leslie Byrne

April is Autism Awareness Month. Let’s make it a time to learn more about autism and what we can do to support those in our community who are living with this diagnosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is“a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication.”It usually appears in early childhood, and the severity varies widely—that is why it is considered a spectrum condition. Early diagnosis and treatment can help neurodiverse children learn to manage in conventional environments. A common sign of autism is when children do not respond to their name. They may resist cuddling and seem to be “in their own world.”You may notice poor eye contact and flat facial expressions, as well as a lack of response to other people’s emotions. Other signs include repetitive movements such as rocking or hand flapping or repetition of words or phrases. People with autism often prefer strict routines and may become upset about any change to a schedule. The five main types of autism were once identified as separate conditions but have been grouped into Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). People with Asperger’s syndrome often have above average intelligence and strong verbal skills but struggle socially. Symptoms include inflexibility in thought or behavior, flat speech, and difficulty interacting with others.

Rett syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that is noticeable in infancy and mostly affects girls. Symptoms include loss of movement and coordination, difficulty with communication, and some breathing difficulties. Childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD) is also known as Heller’s syndrome and is characterized by a reversal in development of language, motor skills, or social function. A child experiences typical development for several years and then rapidly regresses. Kanner’s syndrome is often thought as “classic” autism. Children appear alert and intelligent but also show a lack of emotional attachment to others, interaction difficulties, and obsession with objects. They often have a high degree of rote memory but difficulty learning other things. Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified

Sprinkler Systems

Save Time, Save Water, Save Money

By Roxy Orr

Spring is just around the corner. Time to think of bringing that dried-out winter lawn back to a lush green! Did you know that a properly installed and efficiently programmed sprinkler system can transform your lawn while saving you time, water, and money? Modern sprinkler systems are a lot smarter than the ones you’d see watering the sidewalk in a rainstorm decades ago. Most systems have customizable programming, and others have smart controllers or even automated sensors that can tell if your lawn has already been getting enough irrigation from rainwater. Besides the convenience of not having to wake up early to water your lawn at the optimal time of day, a programmed sprinkler system means you don’t have to worry about your grass getting too much or not enough water when you’re on vacation. As for the water bill, the latest sprinkler systems are much easier on your monthly bill than watering the grass manually. Having regularly-watered grass is a boon for your home’s curb appeal and resale value. Having a functional sprinkler system will guarantee your lawn stays lush and green all summer as well as eliminating any unsightly brown spots that come with the inevitably uneven coverage from manual

watering. Sprinkler system technology is designed to avoid excessive runoff and standing water. This preserves nutrients in your soil and reduces fungi and plant diseases that can be caused by excessive moisture. When you start to shop around for a sprinkler system, there are a few things you’ll want to take into consideration first. The size, shape, and soil type in your yard will determine how often it needs watering. You need to find out if your local municipality has any rules regarding water usage that need to be followed. Your system installer will be familiar with the relevant regulations in your area. They can also advise you on what type of irrigation would be best in your garden beds, which have different watering needs than lawns. You might want to consider a drip system or bubblers for these areas. These types of features use less water by getting directly to the roots of plants and shrubs. The top sprinkler systems on the market are going to be

They cleaned up the area and replaced sod so that everything looked complete.”— Karen C.

Unity Chiropractic Get Back to Balance

By Janette Calabro

Unity Chiropractic wants you to leave your pain in the past! Helping her patients to restore movement and live pain-free is the fulltime focus of owner Danielle Stalp, DC. She is one of only 350 practitioners in the world trained in the correction technique called NUCCA (named for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association). This correction focuses on adjustments in the neck, which takes pressure off the brain stem so that the nervous system can function as it should. It’s a safe and painless way to naturally improve overall health.“It’s a very gentle, specific adjustment to the upper neck that straightens up the whole spine,” says Dr. Danielle. “It balances the whole body.” Every person’s misalignment is as unique as their fingerprint, and the conditions helped by this technique are numerous. NUCCA benefits include full body balance, posture, chronic pain, migraines, scoliosis, even allergies and arthritis. When patients have chronic pain, stress, and anxiety layered on top of each other, it takes a little longer to

get the body back in L-R Drs. Amy Mick, DC, and balance, Dr. Danielle Danielle Stalp, DC, owner points out. Catching symptoms early is key to an easier recovery, and educating patients on when to come in sooner is an important goal. Initially, patients may come in once a week for adjustments. After that, maintenance appointments might be every three to six weeks, depending on the patient’s needs. “In our office, our goal is not only to have people

get adjusted. We focus on whole-body health and keeping the body moving and functioning properly,” Dr. Danielle says. “I enjoy being able to bring multiple techniques that can serve patients in the way they need to be served, but then we can also make sure they are getting the right forms of exercise and nutrition. We talk about full-body health, including things like sleep, stress relief, and fluid intake.” Dr. Danielle advises us to look for a practitioner who is willing to work with you where you are—to find someone who will examine you as a full unit, all layers, from head to toe. What Dr. Danielle loves most about her job is the opportunity to give her patients more life. “It’s fun to have patients come in and say, ‘I was able to go for a four-mile hike without having to sit down,’ or ‘I’m able to do things with my grandkids.’” If the proof is in the patient, just ask Melissa from Omaha, who says her former chiropractor was stumped by an old injury to her lower back. “After six months of living significantly impaired, I went to Dr. Danielle,” Melissa recalls. “Within two weeks, she had me back to over 90 percent normal, and I wanted to kick myself for not going sooner! It was clear that NUCCA was far more effective. In addition to using superior techniques, Dr. Danielle is exceptionally kind and compassionate. I confidently recommend her to absolutely anyone I know.” Several months ago, Dr. Danielle expanded her practice by adding Amy Mick, DC. Dr. Amy specializes in acupuncture and in care for pregnant women, children, and babies.

Arthritis Foundation.indd 1

Acupuncture is beneficial for chronic pain, stress, illnesses, pregnancy, and even helps with infertility. “I teach patients about the whole spine being fully aligned to help the body connect better and feel better,” says Dr. Amy. She uses the Webster technique for normal function of both mother and baby throughout pregnancy and birth. “This technique keeps the pelvis and sacrum aligned, which allows pregnancy to be a lot smoother and easier on the mom. It also allows the baby to get in the correct position throughout pregnancy and get ready for labor and delivery.” One of Dr. Amy’s patients started acupuncture treatment to help her body after going through multiple miscarriages, and she ended up getting chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Amy, as well. “After seeing multiple chiropractors in my life, her adjustments felt like some of the best, most thorough adjustments I had ever had,” Jireh says. “There was always a noticeable difference from the moment I left. Fast forward about 10 months, and I am happy to report I just gave birth to a healthy baby girl! I had an amazing pregnancy and delivery. Truly! I can’t help but attribute a lot of it to being seen by Dr. Amy. She has a way of making you feel like so much more than just a patient, more of a friend. Going through such a hard time and being able to talk to her at each visit made me feel so incredibly cared for. I could not recommend her more.” In March, Unity Chiropractic is moving right across the street, to 1316 North 205th Street, in Elkhorn. Cuddly Critters

Humans and Horses Together for Millennia

By Jackie Byers

Since at least 3500 BC, humans and horses have lived together. We ride them, race them, work them, and train them. Horses fill barns, stables, and pastures. They star in cinema, in literature, and even on Broadway. We integrate them into our lives for protection, entertainment, and companionship. For almost as long as we have lived with horses, we have partnered with them for sport. Popular sports on horseback include polo, rodeo, racing, and equestrian competition. A standard equestrian competition is a three-part event. They feature in Summer Olympics and in international meets. They make rigorous demands of horse and rider and their ability to work as a team. The first part is dressage, which consists of precise movements in an enclosed arena. Horse and rider work together to perform a specific series of intricate movements and impress the judges. Dressage demands grace, precision, and rhythm. Smooth cooperation between horse and rider is essential. Both must appear relaxed as they race against the clock. The second part is show jumping. This involves a challenging enclosed course with various structures for horse and rider to jump. This is also a timed event, and points are deducted for knocking down or balking at barriers. The third element is a cross-country race. The open course will include high and low natural obstacles and barriers like streams and ponds. This is the most strenuous portion of the competition, and both horse and rider need to be in peak physical condition to succeed. Competition with horses requires careful training, which always begins with building a bond between horse and rider. This is true even if the goal is pleasure riding. Horses are herd animals. As the potential rider, you need to become the alpha in a herd of two. To have a horse trust you takes time and a stress-free attitude. Training begins with ground work, getting the horse to follow your commands. Ground work includes leading the haltered horse on walks while you caress him, assuring him you are trustworthy. The learning process should be a relaxing time for you and your horse. It does not happen overnight. Unless you live on a farm or ranch, you will need a stable where you can board your horse. Most urban centers have stables on their outskirts. They rent stalls and store equipment for tenants. During training, you should learn to care for your horse, even if he is boarded elsewhere. This includes feeding him, cleaning his stall, and tending to his needs. You also need to learn how to care for and use the equipment needed for riding, including bridle, bit, reins, saddle blanket, and saddle. Because you’ll need to be with your horse several times a week to 42

April 2022

train and bond, it’s best to choose a stable that is easy for you to get to. Many stables have training programs for beginning riders of any age. This is an ideal way to begin training yourself and your horse. It may become your favorite pastime. While learning to ride and care for a horse offers many hours of pleasure for everyone, it can be especially beneficial for people with special needs. The trust relationship is healing, and many people find a trusting relationship with an animal to be uncomplicated and powerful. People on the autism spectrum or with other developmental challenges, even blindness, have been helped as they learned about caring for and riding a horse. People with PTSD benefit greatly by building a long-term relationship with a horse. Stable managers can read horses, and they are able to select animals best suited to riders with various challenges. Many adults, especially those with PTSD, declare that learning to ride and care for a horse has enriched their lives. Many stables offer specialized training for clients with special needs. A program called Therapeutic Riding of Tucson (TROT) has been improving the lives of children with challenges since 1974. The clients are taught by regular riding instructors, not by physical therapists. Lessons occur up to three times a week. Two instructors work with those who have difficulty moving independently. In the case of a blind client, one instructor leads the horse while two others walk on either side, ensuring that the rider stays on the horse. One instructor notes, “Children who have problems communicating with peers and parents respond well to horses.” Thanks in part to TROT, equine therapy is now widely recognized as effective. Horses and humans have been living, working, and playing together for millennia. Whether you want to ride for competition, companionship, or therapy, a relationship with a horse may be just what you need! Inside Look

Roeder Mortuaries Family Helping Family

By Marge Shoemaker

If you’ve lived in Omaha for any length of time, you’ve probably heard of Roeder Mortuaries. They’re among the oldest in Omaha. Theodore (Teddy, to the family) Roeder was first a partner in the Hanes-Roeder Mortuary on North 24th Street. In 1912, he and his sons Norman and Ronald established the first Roeder Mortuary. Brian Roeder, Teddy’s great-grandson and the current owner and president of Roeder Mortuaries, Inc., recalls, “Teddy always encouraged the family—his kids, their kids, and then their kids—to work in the mortuary. When Uncle Norm and Uncle Ron took over, they did the same thing. It’s a family business!” Over the years, the family and the business have both expanded. In 1966, they built the 50th and Ames facility and in 1988, Roeder moved west to 108th, just south of Maple. The newest facility opened in Gretna in 2006. “Roeder Mortuary’s sloan is “Our Family Helping Yours,” says Brian. “It is our guideline for doing business.” “We believe our primary purpose is to provide a caring and careful service to our community—our neighbors and friends,” Brian continues. “I know for a fact that they do,“ comments Marge, the interviewer. “My husband’s grandmother was buried from Roeder’s on 49th and Ames. They chose Roeder’s because they knew the family was active in the neighborhood and many of their friends had contacted Roeder’s for burial services. When my husband’s parents died, we turned to Roeder’s because we knew they were caring and helpful people. A friend’s husband was buried from the facility in Gretna. I attended the services and know how much they helped her with the details.” Brian explains that the primary job of a funeral director is to make sure everything runs smoothly so the family doesn’t have to worry about anything. “Our responsibility begins when we pick up the deceased and ends with dispersing the flowers after the service,” he says. “In between, we often plan the service, contact the minister and color guard, place the obituary, arrange for transportation to and from the gravesite, and handle anything else the family needs.” Balancing all the duties of a funeral director can sometimes be overwhelming, Brian shares. “Many mortuary science students drop out before they finish, but even a complete education doesn’t prepare you for the variety of duties. In this business, you’re considered lucky if you last five years. Having the experience of working with the family has been a great help!” Technology has brought many changes in the mortuary business. Some arrangements can now be made online. Funerals can be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person. Live-streaming recordings, video calls, and other technological advances make it more convenient for family or friends from out of town or unable to travel to be together.

Video tributes are popular—the photos used in Brian Roeder, President the videos often take the place of a lengthy printed obituary. Costs of printing an obituary in the newspaper for several days have gone up. Many folks just want a simple announcement of their loved one’s death; details are often shared through social media instead. The number of cremations has risen in the past couple of years, not only because of the pandemic but also because of ecological concerns. Construction and use of public and private mausoleums (buildings specially built for storage of cremains) have increased accordingly to meet this need. Other changes have also occurred as the funeral business evolves. Final disposition of the body traditionally includes burial or cremation. In some states, other options are available. Disposition of cremains, varying by personal taste, can include urns, boxes, jewelry (rings or pendants) designed to hold ashes, or spreading the ashes in a meaningful location (limited in some locales). Practices regarding cremation vary according to religious teaching, and the caring professionals at Roeder’s are happy to help you honor and celebrate your loved one in whatever way you choose. Brian advises all of us to talk about what we want done when we die. After all, there’s no avoiding death, and prearrangements help ease the burden of the many decisions left to your family. Prepayment is available, so you can lock in today’s prices. Putting your wishes on paper makes it easier on your loved ones when the time comes. Include preferences like location of burial plot, mortuary selection, obituary, cremation or burial, music preference, pallbearers…the list goes on. Have a will made up, including powers of attorney for finances and health. Remember, today is a gift—that’s why we call it the present. Roeder Mortuaries are located in Omaha at 4932 Ames Avenue (402-453-5600) and 2727 North 108th Street (402496-9000) and in Gretna at 11710 Standing Stone (402-3320090). Ornamental Grasses

Bring Drama to Any Garden

By Linda Sutherland

Ornamental grasses pack a punch like nothing else in the garden! If you want dramatic visual impact in your garden, ornamental grasses are the clear way forward. What makes these grasses“ornamental”is that they are meant to grow freely instead of being mowed or cut like lawn grass. They are there to serve as ornaments in the yard. They’re available in an outstanding variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and they are tremendously versatile. To begin with, ornamental grasses are creatures of habit— either they spread or they clump. The spreaders tend to be taller and much more dramatic. Grasses that clump, on the other hand, tend to be shorter mounds. Choose the type you prefer based on what else you have growing in that location. You can find grasses to suit any soil type, and spring is the season to sow grasses from seed. (If you miss the chance to start your own seeds, you can buy seedlings or larger specimens at your local nursery or garden center.) In addition to adding beauty and variety to your landscape, ornamental grasses provide food and shelter for birds and insects. Ecologically speaking, they also help prevent erosion. These easy-care plants can thrive in drought conditions (once they are established) because of their extensive root systems. The biggest draw for me? Ornamental grasses

are very low-maintenance. My favorite type of ornamental grass is pampas grass. It comes in beautiful colors, and it makes a statement like no other grass does. One caveat, however: When the plant seeds, it is prolific, so do not let it become too aggressive in your garden. A little diligence will go a long way toward reining it in. Another favorite of mine is blue fescue grass. It boasts an icy blue foliage and pale yellow flowers. It is easy to care for and it has a fine, delicate texture that makes it a good companion plant. It is a clumper, so it won’t try to overtake your other plants. Maiden grass is an incredibly attractive grass with silver green blades that turn golden bronze after the first frost. It adds a delicate and flowy look to your garden that is quite charming. Fountain grass is a winner you should not miss. It

2/8/22 2:08 PM

www.womensedition.com

can add so much interest to your landscape! This showy plant never disappoints, and it comes a wide variety of colors. It is a truly low-maintenance, exquisite looker. It is such a dependable grass. A strikingly impressive grass that is new to me is pink muhly grass. It is also known as sweet grass or mist grass. It has a fall bloom of pink flowers that look like feather plumes. The visual impact of these wispy, feathery blooms has a lot to offer. There is something about this grass that is almost whimsical. These beauties deliver a powerful combination for modern landscapes, and I was pleased to learn that they are drought-tolerant. My plan this spring is to plant a row of them in my front yard. I have read that when they are in their full pink regalia, they can actually stop traffic, and they flow beautifully in the wind. Feather reed grass is an interesting ornamental grass that is colorful and ever-changing. You can create a stunning vertical effect with feathery stalks that emerge reddish brown in spring and turn a rich golden color in fall. This particular species is a little different in that it thrives in wet soils, though it can still tolerate drier conditions. The stalks make a great addition to a cut flower bouquet. I like the fact that the color is ever-changing, and it looks great as a vertical specimen along with low-growing plants. There are some additional ornamental grasses that stay small and stay put. These are great in containers, and they never try to take over the rest of the garden. There is a dwarf mondo grass that is deer- and rabbit-resistant and does well in both sun and shade. Ice dance Japanese sedge is dark green in color with creamy white edges and white blooms. It is a slow grower that mounds and does very well in containers. Japanese forest grass is a lovely golden-yellow color with tan to reddish brown blooms in late summer. It is a great alternative for ground cover. In conclusion, there is really nothing not to love about ornamental grasses. The low maintenance they require, the dramatic punch they bring to the landscape, and the food and shelter they provide for wildlife make them all winners in my book.

Living in Place

Home Should Be Accessible

By Linda Barnes

More seniors are choosing to remain in their residence of choice as they age, a concept called “aging in place.”This means having no barriers, even as physical impairments may arise. As a consequence, even new homes are being built with an eye to accessible design. How wonderful it would be if all homes were barrier-free and accessible to everyone, regardless of age or needs. When homes are designed this way from the start, the concept is called“living in place.” With living in place in mind, many home designs adapt to people rather than the other way around. Designs can be beautiful and also functional. Designers and builders consider how a home can meet the needs of owners for their whole lives. For existing homes, Living in Place Specialists have the expertise to transform a traditional home into one that will serve for a lifetime. Designers, architects, and contractors are meeting the needs of our aging population. Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and flooring specialists are examples of professionals who may be certified in home accessibility. Whether building new or remodeling an existing home, the focus should be on having a healthy and safe environment with easy access and no barriers to impede movement. We know that aging brings with it certain needs and limitations; younger folks may also have access requirements after an accident, illness, or surgical procedure. Since my husband’s recent hip surgery, I’m particularly aware of the limitations of our townhome, which was built 30

years ago with seniors in mind. There still is a step up onto our front porch and another step up into the house. He was able to manage with assistance, but it would have been so much better with a zero-step entrance. Had he required a wheelchair, it would have been quite a challenge. Many homes in recent years have been built with Universal Design principles. Such homes are easier to use by everyone, with features like zero-step entry, pull-out shelves, lever door handles, multi-level countertops, and easily accessible light switches and outlets. Accessible Design goes even further. To make a home more livable for those with disabilities, Accessible Design includes things like 36-inch doorways, pocket doors, no-bump thresholds, barrier-free showers, voice-controlled features, automatic door openers, a five-by-five foot turning radius in all rooms, and grab bars at convenient heights. Certified Living in Place Specialists (CLIPP) and Home and Accessibility Trade Specialists (HATS) have trained and have

For an additional fee, services such as laundry, meal prep, plant or pet care, mail pick-up, bathing or dressing assistance, errands, or assistance with medications are available when needed. This is a good option for those who prefer independent living but require just a bit more assistance to be successfully independent. When choosing a care community, there are many similarities but also some important differences. It will be essential to understand the fee schedules and to know exactly what services are included. Most communities are happy to provide a tour and answer any questions you may have. A visit provides an opportunity to see if residents are happy and if the staff is friendly, both important attributes if one plans to live in place. Time to Make a Difference Ripples of Kindness

How are you today? No, really: How are you today? Do you

feel happy, sad, excited, overwhelmed? Positive, negative, or just neutral? I want to know. I care about you. We are all on this planet together. I don’t know how your day started. I don’t know what your day is going to bring you. I don’t know what your personal challenges are. What I do know is that you are a human being, just like I am. That makes the answer to the question, “How are you today?” important to me. “In this life, we cannot always do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” —Mother Teresa

Do we have the ability to turn a total stranger’s day around to be positive? I believe we can…help…to…begin…to turn their day around. This has become an important goal in my life, every single day. “Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room.” —Christine Todd Whitman

Over the last couple of years, many of us were forced to move into a survival mode. It became a situation where some of us were even fighting over toilet paper! Really?

“When you’re in survival mode, you numb yourself.” — Clemantine Wamariya

What do you think? Is it time to thaw yet? I believe it is! The quickest way to begin the thawing process is to stop thinking about ourselves and begin to see what difference we can make in others’ lives. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. Start small! Smile at a complete stranger. Put a quarter in an expired parking meter. Hold the door for those who are entering behind you. Let the car in front of you merge into your lane. Buy the driver behind you their morning latte at the local coffee shop. Deliver a sincere, “Have a great day!” “Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” —Bob Kerrey

Being a person who spreads goodwill helps the stranger, and it helps us. Make a positive impact. I can assure you, Karma can be a beautiful thing. Since I’ve made this my daily goal, I find that I am happier, calmer, and more at peace. When I can make even one total stranger smile, I know I’ve had a good day. It’s time to start the ripple…one person at a time! “Remember, there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” —Scott Adams

Kids Comments

Learning Occasions or Teachable Moments? Take Advantage of Both!

I was chatting with friends the other day about kids and how their reactions to the world are different from the reactions of adults. As a photographer, my friend BC goes to various places in the area to take pictures. One day, he was beneath a pedestrian bridge that crosses a river. It was winter, and the river’s edge was frozen and icy…conditions which lend themselves to danger as well as some really spectacular moments in nature. He heard a young voice yelling down from the bridge, “Hey, mister, are you okay? Be careful on that ice!”This was followed by an older voice, shushing the younger one, “He’s busy! Don’t bother him.” BC was touched that the kid cared, he said, and it made it him think of times that he had shushed his own daughter to avoid confrontation. We’d all experienced similar events. Ann said her grandsons wanted to tell some kids at the zoo that they shouldn’t chase the peacocks because it causes them stress. She admonished her grands, “Mind your own business. The adult with them should correct them, not you.” MK recalled going on a hike with her kids in a wildlife preserve. “There were signs everywhere to keep on the path to avoid damaging the natural undergrowth. Some kids wandered off the path. My son wanted to remind them to stay on the path. I told him he should take

By Marge Shoemaker

care of himself and let them do the same.” Maggie had seen similar signs at a local park: “Put trash in the receptacle. Keep our park clean!” Her grandkids wanted to pick up trash, but she stopped them, citing unsanitary conditions. “Maybe next time we should bring garbage bags,” they suggested. Jim commented that he likes to listen to kids when they express a fresh perspective. Their point of view hasn’t been colored with warnings to not get involved. Chris agreed, commenting that “adults hold things in…it’s not healthy.” Aly said, “Kids are open in dealing with others…they’re more caring and thus more vulnerable…maybe we should try being the same.” We agreed! These events could be both teachable moments and learning occasions for all concerned. The kids are teaching the adults to care about people and places, even when it isn’t technically their responsibility. The kids can learn from the adults that sometimes it’s good to “stay in your own lane” and avoid possible confrontations…just as it’s good to remind others to have respect for posted rules and regulations. The adults are learning from the kids to have more empathy and that sometimes it feels good to act. I hope you all have learning occasions and teachable moments with your kids. We can all use more “inner child” to help us keep in touch. Remember, kids are people, too.

Enterprising Ideas

Relocating for Life’s Next Chapter? Simple Senior Solutions Can Help

By Marge Shoemaker

If you have had reason to look into senior living in the Omaha area, you are well aware of the large number of facilities available and the wide variety in prices and services offered. While we’re lucky to live in a community with so many options, the task of choosing one can be daunting. When we had to relocate Grandma, we visited several facilities in one day; they all eventually looked alike. Are you aware that there are services to do this searching for you? I didn’t know that back when I needed them, but I know now! Hannah and Andrew Diediker are the owners and operators of Simple Senior Solutions. They suggest that you let them do the comparison shopping for you! They have been in business for slightly over three years. Hannah runs the business (and cares for their three children) from home; Andrew provides advice for their clients. Both take clients on facility tours. Their professional backgrounds make them both well suited to the task of finding the ideal living situations for seniors. Hannah once provided physical therapy for a home care company that worked primarily with older clients. Andrew’s experience as administrator and activities director for various long-term care facilities also gives him insight into the industry. They are both fully aware of the difference between working with the general public and working with seniors. “Senior citizens need to keep moving to stay healthy,” Hannah points out, “and they’re not always self-motivated. They need loving direction and encouragement.” Their personal history with elderly family members sparked their interest in senior care. Andrew recalls a frightening time, years ago, when his grandfather got confused. “They lived in a small town about three hours from Omaha. One day, Grandfather went to town to pick up their medications. He was gone for such a long time that Grandmother got worried and called. Grandfather was eventually found in Kansas.” His grandfather, who has passed on now, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Andrew’s grandmother now is dealing with increasing dementia. “Grandmother would often forget that we called her and would tell the next visitor she hadn’t seen or heard from anyone for a long time,” Hannah says. They came up with a creative solution to that problem. “We became pen pals! She can reread our letters and be reminded that her family does care and that she hasn’t been deserted.” Sometimes, however, a creative solution is just not enough. Andrew and his family knew something had to be done. Conversations with friends and neighbors often drifted to frustration about finding a suitable senior care facility for their loved ones. Hannah and Andrew decided they had to step up and do something about it! Those incidents inspired the Diedikers’ mission state-

ment, which states that “every older adult is treated with Andrew and Hannah Diediker, Owners all the dignity and respect they deserve during a chapter of their life that often times leaves them feeling lost and overwhelmed.” Their goal, Hannah says enthusiastically, “is to provide all the tools, guidance, and support our clients need to succeed with their transition into a senior living community.” Simple Senior Solutions maintains contact with various senior living facilities in the area in order to have personal knowledge of services offered, facility administration, and areas of care. “Every place is different,” Hannah explains. “Some only offer memory care, and they don’t always follow the same program. Others provide nursing care or have accommodations for those who are less mobile. It’s becoming popular to provide facilities for mobile seniors who can get by with less care. Others offer variations on assisted living.” It’s no wonder finding a home that fits is so challenging! The process to engage Simple Senior Solutions is simple. First, they conduct an initial consultation with the relocating client to identify the client’s needs and wants. “Family members are encouraged to participate in the consultation,” Hannah says. “We want open communication.” Following the consultation, Hannah and Andrew compare the client’s needs with their database of facility information and develop a list of personalized tours. This process significantly narrows the search for suitable facilities. Andrew is usually the one to schedule visits; both may accompany a client on tours to make sure the right questions get asked. Hannah and Andrew consider themselves advocates for seniors’ rights. “We want to connect our clients to resources we have found reliable,” she shares. “We are both veterans, which means we’re aware of some programs and benefits that civilians may not know about. We strive to share this knowledge with our clients—to educate them about services for their benefit.” Hannah and Andrew recently expanded to include a moving service to further assist their clients in relocation. For more information, call Andrew at 402-990-0341 or find Simple Senior Solutions online at SSSOmaha.com. April 2022

Professional Auto Detailing TLC for Your Vehicle

By Linda Sutherland

Have you ever gotten into your car and caught a slight whiff of the cheeseburger you ate on the run the day before? Or—even worse—the bag and wrappers are still on the passenger seat, and the fragrance is much more than a whiff? Is the rearview mirror covered with fingerprints? Can you sign your name on the dust on the dashboard? Have the kids or grandkids left crayons, raisins, or gum in the backseat? Dirt, food, and dust love to hide under the front seats, and anything on your clothes can be transferred into the fabric and cause odor. Having dogs in your car also adds a special kind of odor that needs some attention. Frankly, there is a good chance that it’s time to have your vehicle detailed. The first objective in getting your car detailed is to protect your investment. We need to think of detailing as a part of our regular vehicle maintenance checklist, just like having the oil changed, the tires rotated, and the transmission fluid flushed. Preserving your car’s appearance can help you get a better price if you decide to sell it, and that’s about more than just cosmetics! A clean car suggests a well-maintained car, giving potential buyers confidence that you have taken good care of your vehicle. In addition, your car will last longer if you take care of its upholstery, flooring, and plastic surfaces. A dirty car can actually affect your health and mental clar-

ity. A clean car is similar to a clean workspace. It’s easier to get your job done when you’re not wasting time and mental space shuffling piles around on your desk or trying to ignore the smell of your coworker’s reheated lunch. In the car, your job is driving, and you are definitely clearer-minded when the windshield is easy to see through and you’re not distracted by unsavory odors. In addition, it’s good for your health to minimize the amount of bacteria growing on the car’s high-touch surfaces. The steering wheel is probably the area you’ll notice first, since lotions, food, and grease can all end up on the steering

wheel. You also need to attend to surfaces like the gear shift, the seat belt, the radio buttons, and anything else you regularly touch. The carpets will trap anything you may have stepped in outside the vehicle and can transfer it to your clean shoes the next time you drive! A basic detailing job usually takes five to eight hours. In addition to tire cleaning, the exterior detailing should include washing, claying, polishing, and waxing. What is “claying,” you ask? This is a specific surface treatment that involves using a clay bar to remove tiny contaminants from a vehicle’s clear coat. It’s a vital step before polishing! If the clear coat still contains debris when a car is polished, the buffer will pick up those contaminants and use them to scratch swirls into the clear coat. If your car’s finish has minor scratches or nicks, a detailer should be able to touch them up. Major scratches should be repaired by the techs at a body shop. Inside the car, your detailing tech should vacuum the seats, carpets, and entire interior. Cloth and leather should be thoroughly cleaned and conditioned, if necessary. The dashboard, vents, instruments, and trim should be cleaned and polished. All floor mats should be removed so they can be fully cleaned, and the floor should be cleaned before mats are replaced. The windows should be cleaned inside and out,

leaving them streak-free. A good detailer will have expert knowledge about the right cleaning and conditioning products for each vehicle and will use the correct processes. Of course, you’ll want someone who is experienced. Look for positive reviews online. Ask if they are certified to apply professional grade coatings and see if they communicate well. A pro will be able to answer all of your detailing questions. How often should a car be professionally detailed? Most experts recommend a full detail every four to six months, but that can also depend on how much wear and tear you put on your vehicle and how often you wash and wax it on your own. (It’s best to wash your car every couple of weeks and wax every three months.) Some detailers offer discounts if you arrange a regular service; be sure to ask. Another amenity to look for is a mobile service—some companies send a truck to your home or work location to do the work at your convenience. No matter how meticulous you are with your vehicle, it could always benefit from some professional TLC. Find a detailer to trust! A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers: “I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Mid-City OB-GYN

Rejuvenate and Restore

By Janette Calabro

Mid-City OB-GYN is devoted to women’s health, offering comprehensive services running the full spectrum of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Liz McIlree, APRN, is a Women’s Health nurse practitioner at Mid-City. She emphasizes the importance of women’s hormones, not just for general health or relief from hot flashes, but also for sexual health. For women whose hormones are out of balance, she often recommends bio-identical hormone therapy. What is bio-identical hormone therapy? These are hormones made from plant sources that are chemically identical to the hormones our bodies make. When used to supplement hormones that have become unbalanced, they can do much to improve overall health. Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can help you feel better as you age and may even help prevent some diseases as you grow older. Such diseases can include cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, and sexual dysfunction. “We do a lot of bio-identical replacement therapy and hormone replacement therapy to treat sexual dysfunction,” says Liz. One of the most natural and efficient ways to replenish hormone levels is with a small pellet, the size of a grain of rice. The pellet is placed under the skin, often in the upper buttocks, and consistently releases small doses of hormones similar to those naturally found in the body. Pellets are considered optimal since absorption may be better than an oral pill. It’s true that not all types of hormone therapy are safe for all people; you should of course talk to your physician or APRN about what’s right for you. However, Liz notes, “there’s been a lot of information over the years that has misled us to believe that hormone therapy is not safe for women who have had breast cancer. We know now that a specific hormone, testosterone, is actually very safe for women who have had breast cancer; in fact, is very helpful in preventing breast cancer. So, it’s safe for women who have had breast cancer or who have had clotting disorders.” For women who have had breast cancer, pellets without estrogen can be used. Testosterone on its own can relieve major hormone imbalance symptoms such as brain fog, decreased libido, fatigue, and joint pain. “Women’s testosterone levels peak around their mid-twenties,” says Liz. A woman’s hormonal health is optimal at age 25 to 30 years. “After that,” Liz continues, “testosterone levels drop. Patients with fatigue, decreased libido, or brain fog may have low testosterone levels. We do a simple blood test to find out.” If she discovers low levels of testosterone, Liz evaluates her patients’ symptoms, age, weight, and medical history before arriving at an optimal formula. Some patients start testosterone pellets in their 20s, while other patients benefit well into their 80s. “Every medication has side effects,” says Liz. “When testosterone is dosed appropriately, 56

April 2022

the side effects are minimal. At Mid-City, we Liz Mcllree, APRN work hard to keep a patient’s testosterone in that sweet spot.” “I have been a patient of Liz McIlree’s for several years,” says one patient. “As time passes, changes have taken place with my body. I was struggling with fatigue, mood swings, low energy, weight gain, and low libido. Liz takes a complex issue and breaks it down into steps that provide real results. Testosterone pelleting has been amazing! Hormone imbalances do happen, and this is an incredible way to get the body back on track. Thank you, Liz McIlree! You are the best!” “One of the most common symptoms that brings patients into Mid-City is decreased libido. Sex is an important part of life, and decreased libido can become a problem in relationships,” Liz says with resolve. “It can present as a physical issue, like having pain with intercourse, or as a hormonal issue, like when unbalanced hormones decrease a woman’s desire for sex.” For women with low libido, testosterone can be a swift solution. “With testosterone pellets, usually in a week or two, a patient’s libido is restored,” Liz relates. For patients who are having physical issues like vaginal dryness or pain with intercourse, laser therapy can bring great relief. Lasers designed to alleviate vaginal dryness or create energy in the vaginal walls are a popular regimen to increase sexual health. One laser, the Mona Lisa, was designed for vaginal dryness. Another laser, called Geneveve, delivers energy to vaginal walls via radiofrequency and is popular to cure vaginal laxity caused by childbirth or aging. The body’s response is to create more collagen; that, in turn, helps with dryness. Geneveve is also FDA-approved to help with urinary incontinence. Liz is proud of the physicians and nurse practitioners at Mid-City OB-GYN who provide treatments like hormone replacement and vaginal rejuvenation. The team also provides gynecological and obstetrical care, along with hereditary cancer screenings and midwifery services. Call 402-397-6600 or visit midcityobgyn.com for more information.

Home Works

Home Plus One

Give Yourself Some Space!

By Anne Yankus

For decades, ownership of a single-family home on its own lot has been part of the American Dream. Well, modern times call for a modern approach to living…or, perhaps more accurately, they call for a return to a more communal way of living. Adding a separate living space to your main home can come in handy in so many ways, from private quarters for aging parents or adult children, to long-term or short-term rentals, to a separate space for work or play. As we return to multigenerational living, a “plus one” can serve as a place for aging parents to live nearby or as a space for adult children to land on their way to their own homes. For seniors who need a little assistance to live independently or just prefer to be near family, a separate living space often known as a “mother-in-law suite” can be a great asset. Mother-in-law suites typically include at least two separate rooms (bedroom and bathroom). For more independence and privacy, a mother-in-law suite can be a complete apartment, with a kitchen, a living room, and a separate entrance. If you’re adding a plus one meant for seniors, it’s smart to consider the principles of universal design during the planning process. This term refers to home design that is accessible for anyone of any ability and includes things like zero-step entry, wider doorways, lever handles instead of

doorknobs, a grab bar in the shower, and so on. Contractors, architects, interior designers, and realtors may be certified living in place specialists who can guide you in this process. (Check out our Seasons of Life article on page 46 for more information on living in place.) If you don’t have an immediate need for additional housing, don’t let that deter you from increasing your living space. An extra suite in your home can be used as guest quarters when family and friends come to visit but don’t want to camp out on the couch. Some homeowners offer their plus one as a short-term rental through a service like Vrbo or Airbnb. Others make it available for their children while they’re in college or graduate school, letting the kids focus on school instead of on making rent. Additional living space can also be used for work.

Though many people have returned to the office, some are still working remotely, at least part of the time. A separate office suite helps keep remote workers more focused and productive. Having a dedicated office space can also help with your health, as you can install and adjust a desk and chair to optimize your posture and comfort instead of hunching over your laptop at the dining room table. A separate space for music-making, video production, visual artistry, and more can keep your creative pursuits nearby without taking over the family home. Imagine being able to work in your woodshop without having to worry about the noise from tools disturbing your family. Similarly, a separate studio is great for artists or musicians who need peace and quiet to create or as a good way to keep equipment and breakables away from kids and pets. What if you need more room but don’t really want to change the footprint of your house? If you have yard space to spare, you might consider building a structure separate from your home. “Casita” is Spanish for “cottage” or “little house,” and that’s just what it is—a small outbuilding that’s designed as a living space near a larger home. A casita can be a charming addition to your property and can be used for all of the purposes we’ve already discussed. Once you’ve settled on what you want, the next step is to hire an architect. Architects are able to draw up detailed plans of your new addition up to code. They can also look at your home’s existing structure and figure out the best way to build onto it (or near it, as the case may be). Hiring an architect may seem like an unnecessary expense for less than a whole-home renovation, but if you value your home’s longevity and structural integrity, it’s worth every penny. When your plans are drafted and signed off on by a professional, your next step is to hire a building or renovation contractor. Check with trusted friends and websites for referrals. Find a renovation or construction contractor who is licensed and certified in your state. Be sure to ask for references from previous clients! With the help of the right professionals, expanding into a “home plus one” can increase both the value of your home and the quality of your life at home. Hardscaping

Beautiful, Functional Outdoor Space

By Toni Arndt

Spring promises new growth, blooming flowers, and more time outdoors. As you survey the outside of your home, are you happy with what you see or would you like to make some changes? If you’re looking for inspiration to freshen up the outdoors around your home, check out the following ideas for creating an outdoor space you will love. Landscaping consists of two major components: softscape and hardscape. Softscape refers to botanical landscape elements such as grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees—basically, anything that grows. Hardscape consists of manufactured features such as driveways, garden paths, retaining walls, pergolas, decks, and patios. Expertly blending these two components of landscaping results in a beautiful and functional yard. Hardscapes can be incorporated into both the front and back of your home. Once installed, these elements are generally the low-maintenance parts of the yard, since they require no watering, mowing, or pruning. Hardscaping can increase a home’s property value by expanding usable square footage and extending space for entertaining. Many options are available for homeowners interested in installing hardscape elements. Driveways take up a lot of space in the front of a home and impact its curb appeal. Improve aesthetics and interest by using stamped concrete, concrete pavers, or cobblestone materials. Garden walks, paths, and stairs protect the lawn by providing designated walkways and access to sloped areas. Select materials that complement your garden and home. Options include pavers, stone, concrete, brick, glass pebbles, terrazzo, and gravel. Retaining walls help prevent erosion and add dimension. Options include wood, stone, brick, concrete block, and poured concrete. Poured concrete can be stained, stamped, or carved. Accent rocks and boulders add interest and texture. Patios and decks increase living space. Patio material options include concrete pavers, stamped concrete, brick, and flagstone. Decks are generally constructed of wood or composite material. Pergolas and gazebos can provide focal points, shade, and curb appeal. They can be part of a deck attached to the home or can be freestanding structures in the yard. Look at the entire area that will include hardscaping and identify everything you want to incorporate before you begin. How will the space be used? Essential considerations include lounging, dining, cooking, and space to move around for relaxation and entertainment. What are your must-have features? How will drainage be impacted? Do you prefer a formal or relaxed look? Select elements that match your style and create a cohesive balance with your home. When hiring a professional landscaper to install 62

hardscape features, homeowners should consider several factors. Establish a budget and desired timeline to ensure that the project remains within established parameters. Obtain referrals from family and friends. Find out how long the company has been in business. Does the company have experience in your type of project? Can they complete the project within your budget and desired timeline? All workers should be bonded and fully insured, including subcontractors. Will the company provide a drawing of their proposal? Do they offer a warranty for materials and workmanship? Ask for references from past projects. Obtain written estimates. Asking plenty of questions will help you find the best professionals for your landscaping project. Now that you’re planning to spend more time in your outdoor space, consider what lighting you’ll need. Adding landscape lighting lets you enjoy your yard after dark, creates ambiance, and provides safety. Landscape lighting options include garden, wash, bullet, well, and flood lights. Garden lights have canopies on top of poles that reflect light down onto garden beds or pathways. Wash lights provide soft, diffused light to brighten specific areas. Bullets project a narrow beam of light to accent things like part of the house, tree trunks, or garden features. Well lights sit in the ground and provide illumination under foliage or the base of a wall. Floodlights cast a bright, wide beam that lights up the side of a house or a tall tree. When choosing landscape lighting, think about what you most want to accomplish. Do you want to create ambiance, highlight specific features, or install security lighting? Once you’ve identified the reasons for landscape lighting, a drawing can be helpful in deciding where to place lighting and what type of lighting will work best. Setting a budget helps ensure you stay on track when selecting lights. You may also need to budget for an electrician. A landscape lighting specialist can help you with every step of a lighting project, from design to installation. Hardscaping provides both aesthetic and practical benefits. It adds depth and dimension to a yard’s natural elements and protects a yard by limiting foot traffic and preventing erosion. Combining hardscaping with softscaping creates a beautiful, functional, and enjoyable outdoor space. Sources for this article included: hgtv.com, forbes.com, and thisoldhouse.com.

Positive Perspective

Let’s Make Others’ Souls Blossom!

By Janet Van deWalle

Decide to Be Happy

“Don’t worry. Be happy.” —Bobby McFerrin

I remember when this song hit the charts in 1988. I was 32 years old. Women’s Edition was only 2 years old—just a “baby” in the business world. I was working 18-hour days, seven days a week. The first time I heard that song, I laughed out loud. I remember thinking, “That’s easy for him to say.” Looking back on it, it was great advice. It still is great advice! “Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” —Omar Khayyam

I have come to realize that deciding to be happy is the vital first step to creating the lives we all say we want to have. Want a great marriage? Do you think your mate really wants to spend all day with a sourpuss? Want a terrific career? How many successful businesspeople do you know who are negative or seem depressed? Want your kids to grow up happy? What kind of behavior are you modeling for them? Want to have a few very close great friends? Would you want to hang out with someone who rarely has anything positive to say? “Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” —Marcel Proust

What I have learned over the years is that when I “get happy,” things go much more smoothly in my life. The traffic moves, the day flows, my interactions with others are fun, entertaining, and productive. I come home with energy to accomplish some projects at home. I sleep well at night. I wake up with a smile on my face and I am ready to face the day. “If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present.” —Roy T. Bennett

Living “in the now” is a concept that can be a true challenge in this day and age. We are bombarded by the negatives. Look at the notifications on your phone. Listen to the radio. Turn on the TV. “If it bleeds, it leads,” as they say. Deciding to go down a different path takes a conscious decision to look at all we have to be grateful for…right here, right now. Then? Follow Mark Twain’s advice: “The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.”—Mark Twain

Trust me. It works. Don’t worry. Be happy!
