It’s springtime!

I now realize that it makes our shivering during the winter months all worthwhile. We really didn’t get lots of snow this year. Cold? Yes. The weather across the country has been pretty bizarre. My husband is originally from Los Angeles, and he still has family there. We have been watching the weather there, like all good Nebraskans do when they have family around the country. LA actually got snow this year, for the first time since 1989. That was 34 years ago! Even the famous Hollywood sign was covered in the white stuff. Many people there had never seen snow. I can only imagine how hectic the streets were, with all those newbies trying to drive in that stuff!

One of the most enjoyable videos that Manny and I saw was of people from LA heading up to Big Bear Mountain to play in the snow. Manny has fond childhood memories of Big Bear. Those who made the trip up the mountain to experience the snow were all like little kids…it didn’t make any difference how old they were. It really made us smile.

I know that a lot of people from California must think we are nuts for living here in Nebraska. They don’t know what they are missing. The change of seasons is worth every cold minute. That said, I am thrilled that the cold is behind us for now. Everyone is out in their yards, itching to plant flowers and get outside.

On a whole other note, April 2023 is the time to celebrate Roxy Orr, the Operations Manager for Women’s Edition. This month, she has been with the magazine for 35 years! When she started, our office was in my home. She came on board when the magazine was only two years old and has been with me, side by side, ever since. We have seen each other through major life changes and challenges…but we are still here. I believe the reason this has worked is that Roxy loves the magazine as much as I do. We love our advertisers… many of whom have been with us for decades. And we love you, our readers. It is so much fun to realize that many of you have been reading us since the beginning. Thank you, Roxy, for always being there…through thick and through thin. I couldn’t have done it without you! I hope you all have the opportunity to get some sunshine this month…it will bring a smile to your face.

Wearable Spring Trends

For All Sizes and Ages!

Seasons are exciting! That’s one of the reasons we love the Midwest. We enjoy all the seasons here…sometimes, all in one day! For those of us who love fashion, it’s fun to look forward to new colors, textures, and silhouettes and to decide what will work for us. I’ve gathered some of the top wearable fashion trends for spring and considered how to work them into our current wardrobes. Let’s take a look!

The pant trends we are seeing this season are new and unexpected. Crazy for cargo this year, designers are taking new approaches to those stiff khaki pants we are oh-so-familiar with. While these new cargos do feature fun pockets, the fabrics are changing. This season’s cargo pants feature soft and even silky fabrics in a variety of fabulous spring colors.

Loose Fitting Pants. The big news in loose fitting pants is the return of the cargo pant. Who doesn’t love pockets? Pockets are everywhere this spring, on jackets, dresses, and pants. This utilitarian look will be easy to find. Loose fitting pants are so comfortable that you may not want to put on your skinny jeans again. (Skinny jeans are not outdated! The look this year is to wear them with an oversized top.) High-waisted wide leg jeans can be worn by everyone and are super on trend. You may have to try on quite a few to find your perfect fit.

Feminine Elements. Ruffles have been popular for a while, and they are still going strong. The trick to wearing them is to pair them with a more structured piece. This balances out the feminine aspect

to give it a classic, sophisticated vibe. Feminine details also mean soft, drapey fabrics. I love the look of a blousy satin shirt tucked into a tailored pant. Sheer details are also strong for spring. Sheer full sleeves on a tailored top are one way to get on board with the sheer trend without showing too much. Denim on Denim. This trend has been inching its way toward mainstream fashion for a while now. It’s a perfect look for spring. Try a buttoned-up denim shirt with jeans. Try wearing a denim shirt open with a white tank underneath and your

10 April 2023 Fashion Worthy

favorite pair of jeans. Or button up your denim jacket and wear it as a top! Buy a new longer denim skirt or jumpsuit or oversized jacket. Experiment with denim in a new way this spring.

Minimalism. This is one trend we can all support. Minimalist fashion is really about elevating your basics. One example would be a classic, tailored, solid-color pant worn with a solid-color, simply constructed top. You can go with color blocking or wear all one color for a long and lean monochromatic look. Elevate this classic look with a belt or gorgeous gold jewelry. Bold gold hoops and shoulder dusting earrings are springing to life in 2023.

Maxi Dresses. I am not talking about those long, floral, prairie-type dresses that were in the stores last year. I am talking about a body-skimming, drapey, ankle-length dress in one solid color. I can’t wait to try one of these dresses on! It could be worn with sandals and a floppy hat or dressed up for the evening. What a great piece to take on vacation! The column dress trend could be replicated with a long, narrow skirt worn with a simply tailored top.

Color, Color, and More Color. As winter wears on, things get drab. Wearing a fresh palette of color is a treat for the eyes and lifts everyone’s mood! Bright green was going strong last year and will continue to thrive, along with a lighter, fairer green. Red is the big on-trend color this spring. Color experts have proclaimed Magenta to be the color of the year. This dark reddish purple can be very flattering. Some people prefer a warmer tomato red for their complexion—either way, red is hot. Royal blue is one of my favorites and looks great with every complexion. Barbie pink was strong last year and is still trending, but you should also consider vibrant orange, another

color that looks great on blondes and feels very summery. Also on the spectrum: bright or pale yellow.

If you are hesitant to wear too much bold color, try combining it with a neutral item to offset the vibrancy. Accessories are also an easy way to incorporate bright color into your outfit. Try a new oversized bag in a trendy color or add a pop of color with your shoes complementing your nails! These tricks will uptrend your neutrals without breaking the bank or making you feel like a neon sign.

The most important part of your wardrobe is to make sure you love wearing it! If you’re comfortable wearing your clothes (and they’re free of wrinkles and stains), you will look put-together and chic no matter what you wear.

Mid Plains Podiatry

Special Services and Availability

Our feet are some of the most important and hardworking parts of our body. Just think about what they do! They help us walk, bend, run, and much more…all while balancing our full body weight. On average, by the time we reach age 80, we will have walked more than 75,000 miles.

The irony is that our amazing feet are among the most neglected body parts. Finding the right podiatrist is a must! The physicians at Mid Plains Podiatry provide care for anything related to the foot and ankle. These professionals have differentiated themselves from other podiatrists by specializing in minimal invasive surgeries.

Owner Elizabeth (Beth) Klawitter, DPM, FAMIFAS, came by her interest in feet naturally, as her father was a podiatrist for over 30 years and she worked for him for 10 years. “As a child, I had really bad feet, and my dad took care of them,” Dr. Klawitter says. “As I got older, I recall asking him who was going to take care of these for me. He said, ‘Well, I guess you will just have to become a podiatrist.’”

She began by attending Nebraska Wesleyan to earn her undergraduate business degree. She earned her doctorate from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Podiatric Medicine, in Des Moines, Iowa. After completing her residency she returned to Omaha and opened Mid Plains Podiatry in 2008.

Emlyn Forsung, DPM, joined the practice in 2021. He grew up in Cameroon, West Africa, and his experience with health care there was much different than in the United States. “Cameroon had a very different health system,” he recalls. “Health care must be paid for in cash only.” When it came to foot issues, he says, amputation was usually preferred instead of longterm care, for financial reasons.

He left Cameroon to pursue “the American dream.” He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. He also met his wife there. He earned his doctorate of podiatric medicine (DPM) and did a three-year surgical residency at Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine, in Independence, Ohio. He is delighted to be back in Omaha, helping patients solve their foot problems.

The list of services provided at Mid Plains Podiatry includes the treatment of nail problems, bunions, flat feet, hammer toes, heel pain/plantar fasciitis, neuroma, pressure ulcers, tendonitis, warts, foot and ankle fractures, and more. They specialize in minimally invasive surgeries. “This type of surgery is performed with small incisions and, typically, with no hardware or sutures,” Dr. Klawitter explains. “This tends to minimize pain and is more aesthetically pleasing.”

When it comes to skin and nail care products, Drs. Klawitter and Forsung prefer to offer organic products and

those distributed by Nebraska -owned companies. “For example, we offer dead sea salts that have keratolytic agents that help remove dead skin and calluses on your feet,” Dr. Klawitter says. In addition, the office carries antifungal nail polish and certified organic creams. They also perform KeryFlex nail restoration to repair damaged toenails.

The team’s philosophy is to cause as little discomfort as possible and make their patients feel great. “One of my greatest rewards is to see someone come to the clinic uncomfortable or in pain but leave happy and pain free,” Dr. Klawitter shares. Dr. Forsung offers a similar sentiment. “The patient and I work together on their issues,” he says, “and the patient leaves with a smile on their face.”

Amanda Carroll is very grateful for the collaborative care and treatment she received from Dr. Klawitter. “Several years ago, I had plantar fasciitis. Initially, we treated the problem conservatively, with insoles and orthotics, but we determined surgery was the next step,” Amanda says. “After the surgery? In a week, I was walking normally with no pain!”

Don Guiles also had a great experience at the clinic. “Dr. Emlyn Forsung treated me for plantar fasciitis and edema. For the plantar fasciitis, he recommended I try over-thecounter inserts, which I received at the office. They helped immensely, and I no longer have pain in my feet. In the case of the edema, compression stockings were recommended. The compression stockings brought the swelling down and have kept it at bay. Dr. Forsung was very thorough in explaining both of my problems, and I recommend him to everybody.”

Another unique aspect of the clinic is that evening hours are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “As far as I know, no other podiatry office offers evening hours, which allows students and working people other options,” Dr. Klawitter notes.

Mid Plains Podiatry is located at 3346 North 108th Street, in Omaha. To reach them by phone, please call 402315-4344. Online, they’re at midplainspodiatry.com.

Understanding Love

What Kind of Love is in Your Life?

Love is one of those four-letter words that has positive meaning—and we all want it. Love is the emotion that launches our most popular songs, movies, books, and stories. When we think of love, the vast majority of us think about the romantic notion of love. However, as I learned through an inspirational and educational course in college, the ancient Greeks actually identified eight different types of love in their society. I thought we could explore these types of love and what they mean, so we can focus on how we are all loved in different ways.

Acknowledging our feelings helps us better understand our life, and the ancient Greeks were well aware of that. When we become conscious of our connections with ourselves and other people in our lives, we are also more open to the world around us and to relationships in general. It is important to remember that people give and receive love differently.

The ancient Greeks classified love in eight different categories.

Agape: Unconditional Love. The idea of unconditional love was considered quite radical because so many people were considered incapable of this emotion. It is often called “spiritual” love. Christians point to Jesus as an example. In sacrificing himself for others, he exhibited this type of love for all humans. Buddhists describe it as “metta” or universal loving kindness. It is the purest form of love.

Eros: Romantic Love. The name comes from the Greek god of love and fertility. This type of love is normally associated with sexual passion and desire. Eros actually struck a fearful chord with the ancient Greeks because it was so powerful and could involve a loss of control.

Philia: Affectionate Love. This is the type of love we experience with friends. The ancient Greeks considered this kind of love more important than romantic because friends often endure hard times together and lean on each other. It involves feelings of loyalty, camaraderie, and sacrifice for others. The philosopher Plato argued that physical attraction was not necessary for love. Though Plato himself did not coin the term, the type of love he advocated for is often referred to now as “platonic” love.

16 April 2023 A Woman’s Work

Philautia: Self-love. In modern times, people often associate this with selfishness, but that is not what the ancient Greeks meant at all. It is vital to love one’s self in order to be open to giving and receiving love from others. If we don’t love ourselves, how can we show affection or be there for others? Self-love is healthy. As Aristotle said, “All friendly feelings for others are an extension of man’s feelings for himself.”

Sorge: Familiar Love. This type of love is the love between a child and a parent (or a parental figure). This type of love can also describe the relationship formed when childhood friends later share a bond as adults.

Pragma: Enduring Love. This is nearly the opposite of eros, though it can certainly develop from romantic love earlier in life. Pragma is a longstanding love that has matured and grown over time. (Picture old couples who have been together for many, many years and still hold hands.) This type of love is special and seems somewhat hard to find.

Ludus: Playful Love. Have you ever felt butterflies in your stomach or giddiness when you walk with a newfound love, enjoying the teasing and flirting, feeling like you never want to be without them? That is Ludus (sometimes known as the honeymoon stage). Interestingly, studies have shown that when a person is experiencing this type of love, the brain actually lights up and is stimulated the same way it would be if the person had used cocaine. The ancient Greeks may not have consulted brain scans, but they certainly knew that playfulness is an essential ingredient of this feeling.

Mania: Obsessive Love. This is not a constructive type of love. This love can lead a partner to madness. The ancient Greeks saw it as an imbalance between eros and ludus. Those who experience this type of love may see the love itself as a way of rescuing themselves from obsession, but it only reinforces that the sufferer lacks self-esteem. They so greatly fear losing this “love” that they may be driven to destructive acts.

Many problems in relationships come from misunderstanding, especially in the area of love. We are all different, and that is okay! If you have a good handle on what type of love you’re feeling in each relationship in your life, you’ll have a better chance of understanding the people you love.

OKOmaha Real Estate Company

Helping Landlords Manage

Adding a real estate component to your investment portfolio might sound like a great idea…until you get your first middle-of-the-night phone call from a tenant with urgent issues. Though being a landlord can have its advantages, there’s no denying that it also has its hassles. Are you dealing with late rent payments from your tenants? Are you struggling to keep up with cleaning or maintenance at your property? Are your tenants not adhering to city or county regulations? The folks at OKOmaha Real Estate can give you relief from these dilemmas and more.

OKOmaha Real Estate Company was founded in 2007 by Dale Hahn. Dale had been a local realtor for decades before starting his company, which is centered around the idea that professional management of a property is best left to the professionals. Now that Dale has retired, his daughter, Michelle “Mimi” Hahn, is the owner of OKOmaha. Mimi moved back to Omaha in 2014, earned her real estate brokers license, and joined the company.

“I had a great mentor!” Mimi tells me. “My dad started in real estate before I was born. There is no one more knowledgeable about this business. He taught me everything.” Mimi emphasizes that whether you own one or 100 properties, OKOmaha can manage them for you. This locally owned management company takes the hassle and headaches out of managing a rental property.

If you’re wondering why you would want a property manager, consider whether any of these statements rings a bell: You are tired of handling day-to-day tenant headaches. You are too far away from your properties to manage them properly. You want to retire and need someone you can trust to take care of your investment.

Michelle explains in detail how her company can benefit you and restore your peace of mind. “We live and run this business in Omaha. We know the area and have been doing this for over 30 years,” she points out. “We have a full-time maintenance staff and a 24-hour emergency line. If the pipes break, if there is storm damage, if a tree falls—we are equipped to get to the property quickly. There is a 24/7 portal for owners and tenants to communicate with OKOmaha.” Most importantly, Michelle says, “We treat your properties as if they were our own. Our passion is to keep our clients’ investments professionally managed, clean, and occupied.” What a relief it would be to have Michelle and her staff dedicated to your peace of mind!

Because they are so in tune with the local rental market, OKOmaha is also a great resource for people who are looking for a place to rent. Whether you’re relocating because you need more space, have moved for work, or just think it’s time to get out of Mom and Dad’s basement, OKOmaha can help you find the right place.

OKOmaha seeks great tenants for their properties, so their prospective tenants need to meet a few qualifications. First of all, you need to be at least 19 years old. You need to have been at your current job for at least six months, and you need to be making three times the rent. To see great properties at affordable rates, visit their OKOmaha Real Estate Facebook page. There are no hidden fees involved in submitting an application. To submit an application in person, come to the office, which is located at 2900 Douglas Street, Suite 2 (in the Multi-Vest building). If you want to submit an application online, email okomaha@gmail.com for further information.

Michelle is proud of the staff at OKOmaha and credits them with the success of the business. “None of this would work without them. They are really hard workers,” Michelle says. “Every day is an adventure around here, with many moving parts. My staff keeps it all going.” Longtime staffers include office manager Becky Del Angel, who has been with the company for six years. Dante Wess has been the maintenance manager for three years, keeping things running smoothly from day to day. Marlise Dishaw has been the accounts manager since day one.

If you are ready to hire a property manager for your investment properties or are looking for a new place to live, call OKOmaha Real Estate Company. Michelle and her staff are eager to answer any questions or concerns that you may have about hiring a property management company. Call her at 402-905-2247 for a free consultation. You can reach OKOmaha Real Estate Company by phone at 402-905-2247 or online at okomahareasestate.com.

Celebrate Spring With a Party Kick Off Your Shoes and Dance!

Ah, spring, the reawakening of nature and adventure. Rites of spring provide the best excuses to kick off your shoes and plan a party—graduations, wedding events, birthday parties, anniversaries, or simply a celebration among friends. If you’re not sure where to start, begin with shaping your event’s goal and establishing a budget. Then, dive into details like venue, caterers, entertainment, party rentals, flowers, and invitations. Whatever your theme, the trend this year is to go big! That’s big as in significant, whether you have a large or small number of guests. People are ready to celebrate in 2023! Let’s take a look at contemporary trends, tried and true ideas, and how to make it all happen.

Parties often follow specific milestone events—think graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and class reunions. The ideas for spring celebrations are boundless. What about kids’ birthday parties themed with wild balloon installations? Perhaps mermaid or unicorn themes? How about disco-themed parties just for the heck of it? Sports fans often invite friends over to celebrate their favorite teams (dress in your team’s colors).

Trending hot in 2023 is the pop culture party theme. Depending on the guest list, you can go nostalgic with an old television show like 90210 , or go western with a newer theme from the ever-popular Yellowstone . Everyone dresses as their favorite star, and you serve food to match. For a culinary crowd, go all Julie and Julia and serve pastries with champagne. If it’s a bash with a certain decade in mind, invite guests to dress for the decade. Shoulder pads were especially popular from the ’70s through the early ’90s, if you’re curious! How about a masquerade ball? A solve-the-murder-mystery gathering?

If the weather allows for it, cookout-style parties for graduations are popular, cheap, and oh-so-tasty! Make sure you have tables, chairs, paper plates, eating utensils, napkins, and of course a choice of drinks. Connect with your party rental store for prices on decorations so that your party pops as a memorable event. Just because it’s casual doesn’t mean it has to be dull!

As the weather warms, many people consider deck and patio parties. Picture yourself and your guests under the stars, next to a firepit, holding a Van Gogh cocktail—that’s one ounce of vodka with four ounces of sparkling rosé, flavored with simple syrup and garnished with starfruit. Enchanting! How about stargazing while sipping a buttered coffee paired with an aromatic hot toddy (whiskey, lemon, honey, and a touch of cinnamon)? You’re sure to garner five-star ratings with your guests.

Outdoor celebrations are trending toward unusual themes like mysticism. Yes, magic and mayhem under the moon, in your backyard! Hire a psychic for your guests, along with an astrologer or tarot card readers. Pipe in dreamy music.

If you’re outdoors, consider a fire performer. Include the possibility of a magician or a numerologist. Open a space for guests to dance—ballroom, freestyle, anything to their liking.

First impressions are vital, so start your party with a bang! (Not necessarily fireworks, though that’s an interesting idea!) Highlight a warm welcome with something for your guests to hold, like an amusing cocktail, a hot chocolate on a cool night, or an appetizer to nibble on before the meal. Make introductions for smaller crowds. Don’t forget name tags for larger groups. Wait—name tags at a party? Yes! Comfortable communication means knowing someone’s name. Party pros say that “a party without name tags is like a museum without labels for the paintings.” Guests like to feel like they know each other. Use simple stick-on labels or make your own.

Now that your head is abuzz with ideas, let’s look at budget planning. Select a date and time and plan your guest list. Depending on your theme, food and drinks may well be the largest chunk of a party budget. Entertainment is next, including music (live, DJ, or a playlist piped through speakers if your party is at home), entertainers, and so on. Finally, save room in the budget for the venue, party rentals, flowers, and decorations.

The budget for a graduation open house will be different from the budget for a crowded wedding. Decide how much you want to spend on each guest, and then split your budget into categories like décor, food, drinks, music, and so on. Connect with a party planner for the best plan—they always know which corners to cut and where to splurge.

Weddings warrant a well-planned budget several months in advance of the party itself. Making a budget will help you sort through your priorities. Make a mission statement, stick to it, and develop a realistic budget with help from a wedding planner. Wedding guests often remember a unique menu, the wedding cake, the flow of the party, and a hospitable host.

Once you’ve planned a budget, choose a venue based on how much you want to spend, the size of your group, and how much space you’ll need. Book a venue at least eight months in advance of the event, and secure the right tech (think microphone, speakers, outlets, platform for the band or DJ) if your venue is not at home. Commercial venues often

Just because it’s casual doesn’t mean it has to be dull!

require a deposit between 25 to 50 percent up front. Find out if your deposit is refundable. (If you cancel, and the venue can’t rebook within a certain amount of time, you may lose your deposit.)

Of course, your home works as a venue—just stock the bar and set the table for a memorable bash. You should still consider hiring caterers, entertainers, and bartenders for parties at home. You don’t have to do all the work just because the party is at your house! The best parties contain an element of surprise, so slip in an interactive dessert like S’mores or chocolate fondue, or create a mood with sound-activated party lights.

Delicious food is often the most memorable draw of any party. A good caterer prepares, delivers, and serves mouth-watering food, usually on their own plates (but not always, so ask before you sign). They generally oversee the food preparation, service, and clean-up, giving you time to mingle with your guests. It’s best to overestimate your head count so there’s enough food for unexpected guests. Be sure to ask about additional services like insurance bonding for accidents. Hire a bartender if the caterer doesn’t include one. Nothing says, “This is gonna be a great party!” like a professional bartender.

Make sure to check with your caterer and find out what is included in the price before you sign on the dotted line. Does the caterer provide plates, utensils, tablecloths, and everything else you need to wine and dine your guests? Can they meet dietary restrictions with gluten-free choices or vegan dishes? Also consider food trucks for your event. Many offer quality, versatile food choices for drop-off catering, buffets,

Invest in your health in 2023 with concierge healthcare at Members.MD

and even plated dinners. Food trucks create a community feel, encouraging socializing and adding fun to the party!

Don’t forget the party rentals. Kids’ parties need entertainment, too, and that can include bounce houses, carnival games, or inflatable slides. Adult bashes may require tables and chairs, tents, and canopies. Extras like flowers, lighting, and portable bars for cheerful drinks make all the difference.

Consider invitations for an organized event or even for a simple party. Formal parties should have invitations sent three to five weeks in advance, just as a common courtesy. Guests for formal dinners need up to six weeks’ notice, especially if you require an RSVP (don’t hold your breath for responses). Wedding invitations should go out two to three months ahead of the date. Send informal party invites about three weeks before the bash. Invitations range from fun to funny, from elegant to fancy. Whatever the tone of your event, a local print shop can make an invitation to match!

When you’re planning a party, take the pressure off yourself. An amazing party doesn’t have to be perfect. Allow the caterer to mesmerize, the drinks to lift spirits, and the florals and décor to enchant your guests. You can make a lasting impression with music and entertainment, good company, and a parting gift for each guest. Good party planning helps you set expectations for yourself and your guests. Then you can sit back, enjoy the company, eat and drink, and dance to that unforgettable playlist!

Phoenix, Arizona Having Fun in the Sun

Talk about the perfect time to visit the desert! Now is the time to pack your bags and head to Phoenix for an early spring getaway. My recent trip to the “Valley of the Sun”showed me there are a lot of things to see and do in the 5th largest city in the United States; we just have to narrow them down to what you enjoy. Are you a sports fan? Want to play outdoors? Need to relax? Prefer to wine and dine? Enjoy the art scene? Phoenix has it all.

Start one of your days by stopping by Lux for your coffee and pastries, then drive over to the historic Biltmore area, where you can take a brisk morning walk around the neighborhood while admiring all of the fancy estates. If your travel agent can book you at the Arizona Biltmore with Citrus Club privileges, you are in for a treat! If not, stop by anyway to enjoy a spa treatment or lunch. You can always book an online tee time to play a round of golf at the Links or Adobe Courses at the Biltmore Golf Club.

Papago Park is a great place to pin on your map to visit. There are trails to fit every level of experience. Take the short Hole-In-The-Rock trail for rewarding views of downtown and amazing sunsets. Visit the Desert Botanical Garden, where you can meander through some 140 acres of local flora and fauna. Go for hikes and bike rides on paved walkways as well as trails and loops. You could even visit the zoo. Spring is one of the best times to visit the desert—everything is blooming and colorful, and the weather is perfect.

If you prefer to explore the Sonoran Desert not on foot, sign up for an ATV or 4-wheel drive experience. You could also kayak and stand-up paddleboard through the many rivers and lakes. If complete relaxation is your goal, check out the hot air balloon outfitters that will literally float you over the scenic desert.

Downtown has a plethora of murals to fill all of your social media and selfie needs. Those who enjoy art and music should stop by The Rebel Lounge and see a live show after taking a pic in front of the cool Arizona mural outside. The Phoenix Art Museum houses the Southwest’s largest collection of classic and contemporary art and has free admission every Wednesday (3:00-7:00 p.m.) and the first Friday of every month (3:009:00 p.m.). Melophiles and instrument aficionados will want to see the Musical Instrument Museum in north Phoenix.

If you want to hang out where the cool kids are, go to Roosevelt Row. This is the walkable art district in downtown Phoenix, full of restaurants, shops, galleries, and everything in between. Catch the First Fridays Art Walk and then recreate a little gaming history by checking out an arcade bar or two. For memorable gifts, you will want to bring home souvenirs

from MADE Art Boutique and Bunky Boutique. Practical Art is another shop in Uptown Phoenix worth visiting to bring home local art creations.

The spring season also brings many events and festivals, from food and wine to art, motorcycles, and beyond. The annual Maricopa County Fair will be April 12th–16th this year at the Arizona Fairgrounds. Arizona Restaurant Week runs May 19th–28th. If you are into professional sports, catch a Phoenix Suns game at the Footprint Center or an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game at Chase Field. If you get tired of playing golf yourself, you can look up which golf tournaments are taking place during your visit to watch.

If you’re like me, you will want to really relax by staying at a luxury spa resort. If you drive outside of Phoenix, two that await you are CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa and Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa. They are both on my wish list! Simple Senior Solutions

Guidance for Aging Care

Simple Senior Solutions starts with a consultation to understand your family’s unique situation and determine the needs of your loved ones. From there, they can educate everyone on the living options so you can decide which one is right for your family. “The average person does not know what is available to them,” co-owner Hannah Diediker points out. “I try to educate and inform in a gentle and loving way.”

Hannah and her husband, Andrew, come from a pretty remarkable background. Both of these Nebraska natives served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Throughout their careers, they have worked with the senior population, and both have educational backgrounds in geriatric recreational therapy and physical therapy and Masters in Healthcare Administration (MHCA). Their experience gives them a great outlook to significantly help with an aging individual’s physical and emotional well-being.

At your initial consultation, they can determine the needs, wants, and benefits that need to be addressed and what can be done to make things easier for everyone. They have the network available to meet just about every situation. Because they are so well connected, you can rest assured that they can guide you in the right direction.

This life transition is challenging, and we all could use some help making these difficult decisions. Sometimes, complicated family dynamics can come into play; they are excellent at navigating these. “Empathy is key for us and for anyone in this field,” Hannah says. “We always want to be our client’s strongest advocate, honoring their wishes and taking as much weight off of their shoulders as possible.”

Ideally, the older adult or family member would reach out to them in a planning state of mind. This allows for a plan to be put together so families can enter these emotionally charged transitions having the education and knowledge of the logistics beforehand. This ensures that the client has time to get their finances in order and that their wishes are honored throughout the transition. As we all know, no one knows what tomorrow may hold! They have walked families through countless emergency placements, as well.

If you need to consider senior living for a loved one, you

can turn to Simple Senior Solutions for that, too. They know all the ins and outs of the Omaha Metro and surrounding towns and can point you in the direction of a community that will be compatible with your loved one. They can set up interviews and tours of communities, but they are only there to advocate and educate—you decide which facility is right for your family. Their goal, according to Hannah, is to achieve the best arrangements possible for everyone.

Based on how valuable it seems, you might think this would be an expensive service. You would be mistaken. This service is provided at no cost to clients, and you only have to look at their five-star reviews on Google to know that they are doing things right. They also have a moving division that can move loved ones to a senior living community if the decision is made to leave their home or even if they change apartments inside a community. They have very competitive prices on movers, and veterans receive a 10 percent discount.

Hannah’s passion for seniors is easy to understand once you talk with her. She is a shining star and advocate for aging veterans and feels very strongly about our responsibility to our veterans. She knows how difficult decisions can be for children of seniors, and she is highly skilled when it comes to explaining all the options.

Simple Senior Solutions is not a franchise—it is a local labor of love. Hannah notes that starting your own business is no small task, and that it really can’t be done on your own. You’ll need good mentors, she says, “go-to people with a wealth of experience in the field you are interested in.” Do your research in the field, and then “put your head down and do the work!”That sounds like excellent advice, no matter what field interests you. Hannah and Andrew get great satisfaction from representing our aging population and helping them with late-in-life transitions. They’re proud of what they do, and they love it.

To learn more, you can reach out to Simple Senior Solutions at 402-990-0341 or info@sssomaha.com.

The time has come—your parents are independent and want to continue to take care of themselves, but there are signs that they may need some help. You and your siblings are at a loss as to how to start. There are so many things to consider and each family is different. What are the available aging care options, and what is the first step toward finding them? That is where Simple Senior Solutions comes in, guiding you toward the right aging care for your family.

Put Your Best Face Forward Treat

Yourself to a Facial

Spring is the season of renewal and rejuvenation: a time for fresh looks in everything from our wardrobe to our skin. A good facial will awaken your skin from its winter hibernation, and it will go a long way toward revitalizing your overall appearance. A facial is primarily about improving the look, feel, and health of your skin, but there are also many other benefits.

First and foremost, a facial provides a deep, thorough cleansing. Just one session results in a noticeable difference. Your face will appear more glowing and radiant. Exfoliation is a key component of any facial. Unless old skin cells are sloughed off, it’s difficult for the skin to replace them with new ones. Exfoliation removes those dead skin cells, enabling new cells to grow.

A facial is a good stress reducer. The face contains many pressure points, which are frequently massaged during a facial. This decreases both physical and psychological stress and stimulates cell regeneration, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. Massaging any part of the body will improve blood circulation to that area. As circulation improves, skin cells take on more oxygen and nutrients. This accelerates cell regeneration, replaces dead skin cells at a faster rate, and improves overall skin appearance.

Outside pollutants and contaminants can make the skin dull and dry it out. Regular facials detoxify and tighten the skin, helping to retain moisture. Most facials contain ingredients rich in antioxidants, essential oils, and herbal extracts that accelerate the

detoxification process. As we age, our skin becomes less elastic because of external factors as well as a natural decrease in collagen production. Facials stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

If your complexion is blotchy, the right facial can smooth out uneven patches of skin caused by exposure to the sun’s rays. A facial provides the proper nutrients to brighten your skin and bring it back to its previous condition. A good facial will also reduce undereye bags and dark circles by providing hydration and nutrients targeting that delicate area.

How do you determine which type of facial is best for you? The first step is to choose your technician wisely. Schedule a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist or licensed aesthetician. They can recommend a facial treatment suitable for your skin type and your skin care goals. There are multiple types of facials available.

The classic facial, also known as a European facial, is a

basic facial that includes steaming the face, exfoliation, massage, and possibly the application of masks, serums, or moisturizers. It deeply cleanses the face, unclogs pores, and evens out skin tone. It’s a good choice if you suffer from acne. A lymphatic massage may be part of a classic facial. In addition to being a wonderfully relaxing experience, this type of massage reduces puffiness and tension around the face and neck. It also helps decrease water retention and toxins. A classic facial can be customized to include anti-aging and hydration treatments.

A microcurrent facial refers to any facial that utilizes an electronic device. It’s completely safe and pain-free. Galvanic and high-frequency facials are the most common microcurrent facials. A galvanic facial uses galvanic currents to stimulate and tone the facial muscles. This gives the skin a more lifted look and reshapes the face, making it appear more defined.

A high-frequency facial is sometimes called a radiofrequency facial. Electrical currents produce a certain amount of heat to stimulate deeper layers of the skin. Its anti-inflammatory heat kills bacteria, making this a good option to treat acne and reduce acne scars. LED light therapy also uses electricity. For this procedure, different wavelengths of light are employed to treat various skin issues. Different colored wavelengths cause different reactions. Blue light therapy fights inflammation and can help treat acne. Red light helps the skin heal more quickly and promotes collagen growth.

More invasive options to restore facial skin include laser resurfacing and chemical peels. A chemical peel uses an acid such as glycolic acid to promote skin turnover. It’s one of the most effective skin resurfacing treatments available. Benefits include getting rid of deep wrinkles, scars, and age spots. Laser resurfacing uses laser beams to create microscopic wounds in a pattern. Non-wounded cells encourage the wounded cells to heal, stimulating new cell generation. It’s great for fine lines, age spots, and enlarged pores.

A facial is an important step toward healthy, revitalized skin…and it’s a delightful experience. Take time out for yourself. Melt away stress and wrinkles and improve your overall appearance with a customized facial that will help you look your best this spring.

Reimagining Home Designing With Repurposed Materials

Homeowners are exhibiting a growing desire for living spaces that reflect originality and character. Frustrated by a lack of unique design products, architects, homeowners, and designers are increasingly on the hunt for vintage materials that have stood the test of time. Whether it’s incorporating refurbished brick or re-hanging century-old antique doors, people everywhere are designing with repurposed materials. When you factor in that materials made with this quality of craftsmanship simply cannot be found today, are often purchased at below market prices, and are eco-friendly, it’s no wonder this hot trend has taken the design world by storm!

Much of the appeal of designing with repurposed materials comes from the idea that you are buying a bit of history. It’s all about adding time-worn materials to create living spaces that feel unique instead of cookie-cutter. Typically, such materials come from architectural salvage, a term that refers to items salvaged from buildings that have been demolished, like old warehouses, factories, barns, and city banks. Historic buildings face the wrecking ball every day, but they often contain a treasure trove of artifacts that can be recycled and incorporated into modern living spaces.

Salvaged materials can come from a building’s exterior (things like bricks, wood, and tile) or from the interior (items such as lighting fixtures, benches, or fireplace mantels). Unlike choosing items from a catalogue or retail furniture store, salvaged items instead come from churches, schools, and old houses with unique one-of-a-kind features.

With a bit of imagination, you can use vintage pieces in unexpected ways. For example, turning an antique dresser into a powder bath vanity or a salvaged wrought iron gate into a re-purposed headboard for a bed are fun ways to fold repurposed items into any design style to give it a sense of depth. The art of layering time into spaces creates rooms that feel authentic and have soul.

The blending of architectural salvage into any setting elevates the style, whether it’s traditional or contemporary. Before investing in reclaimed materials, it’s a good idea to give some thought to the aesthetic you’re trying to create and choose items that are true to the context. If, for example, you envision an urban loft, sourcing materials from an old factory or warehouse would be ideal. On the other hand, if creating an equestrian vibe is your objective, using wooden beams from an old barn makes perfect sense.

Typically, owners of older homes seek out architectural salvage and period pieces for restoration projects, while the owners of newer homes are looking to add distinction and character. If you’re building a new home, the curation of architectural salvage creates an interesting alternative to selecting from all modern architectural products. A beautiful stained glass window from an old church or a pair of tall wooden doors can be used in new construction by modifying standard openings to fit unique pieces. While adding beautiful vintage accents may require some modification, your efforts will be rewarded with something that makes your house stand out for decades to come.

So, where exactly can you find reclaimed home building materials? Fortunately, reclaiming, reusing, and recycling have become more common in the construction and remodeling industry (as they have in day-to-day life). Reclaimed building materials like windows, doors, and wood flooring are becoming increasingly easy to find. Check out architectural stores and consignment shops in your area. Make a fun adventure out of hunting down reclaimed materials that would be the perfect complement to your home. Shopping for reclaimed materials is friendly on the budget; many items can be 50 to 75 percent cheaper than new materials.

While many older items are ready for a second life, be sure to check that there’s no wood rot or warping. If the idea of vetting and incorporating reclaimed materials into your living spaces seems daunting, an interior designer can help track down materials, offer expert insight on how to incorporate materials into your design plan, and offer guidance on how to pull it all together. They are extraordinary resources for this kind of project.

Introducing historical design elements connects us to the past and satisfies our yearning for items that have stood the test of time. Perfectly worn, full of history, and impossible to recreate, these pieces tell a story, lending originality and authenticity to a space. Very often, they become the most talked-about design elements in a room. Best of all, when it comes to repurposing, there are no hard and fast rules. Look for interesting and beautiful pieces that speak to you and give them a new home to continue their story.

Mental Health Awareness Month

We All Need Help

How are you? I mean, how are you really feeling? Have you taken time lately to dig deep and think about the state of your mental health? Are you experiencing anxiety or depression? What about your spouse or children? How are they feeling? After three years of COVID-19 restrictions and illness, a lot of people are recognizing some mental health concerns in themselves that perhaps they never noticed before. Even if you have never been diagnosed with a mental health condition, it is time to focus on your mental health and seek help if needed.

Symptoms to watch for in yourself or others include sleep or appetite changes, mood changes, social withdrawal, decrease in activities, problems with concentration, heightened sensitivity (to sights, sounds, smells, or touch), feeling disconnected, apathy, nervousness, or uncharacteristic behavior of any kind. Changes should be discussed with a health care provider, therapist, or counselor. Anyone with suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of harming others, needs immediate attention—call 911 (for any emergency) or 988 (for suicide crisis).

The most common mental health conditions are anxiety and depression. In 2019, over 300 million people worldwide were living with an anxiety disorder. Of that 300 million, 58 million were children and teens. In the same time frame, 280 million people were living with depression, and that number includes 23 million kids and teens. Characteristics of an anxiety disorder include excessive fear, worry, and behavioral disturbances. Depression can have a wide

variety of symptoms, including poor concentration, low self-esteem, feeling sad or empty, or thoughts of suicide. Fortunately, there are several effective psychological treatments, medications, and therapies to help.

Other common conditions include bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, and schizophrenia (characterized by persistent delusions, hallucinations, highly disorganized behavior, or extreme agitation).

Although we face less stigma today when we take time off to focus on mental health, we still have a lot of work to do. Stigma stems from a lack of understanding and negative attitudes. Media often portray inaccurate stereotypes of mental illness or use demeaning language. Stigma can lead people to be discriminated against and excluded from social groups. It can contribute to worsening symptoms because it can cause someone to avoid seeking treatment. It can lead to reduced opportunities for work, can make it difficult

to find housing, and can lead to violence or harassment.

It is good to know that mental health professionals have more forms of treatment than in the past. The most common include psychotherapy or counseling, prescription medication, support groups, brain stimulation therapy, and hospital or residential treatment programs. Since COVID-19, many people are using telemedicine and virtual visits to talk to their doctors or participate in group sessions.

If someone needs immediate mental health help, call the national suicide and crisis lifeline at 988 or go to the closest emergency room. For less urgent needs, call your health care provider or therapist. Many employers offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) to provide these services to their employees. Some people find relief from anxiety and depression symptoms through holistic remedies like massage, acupuncture, or chiropractic care. Some herbs can help, as can a healthy lifestyle of regular exercise, good sleep hygiene, and a healthy diet.

With the help of social media, we are talking about mental health more than ever, and this is breaking down some of the stigma. Each week, it seems, another celebrity is talking about their mental health struggles. They often take time out of the spotlight and return feeling healthier. This can serve as an example to employers whose workers need to take time off work to address mental health concerns.

Parents who see symptoms in their child should start by calling the pediatrician, who may recommend a psychiatrist or psychologist. Children with signs of psychosis should be seen immediately because symptoms can worsen without treatment.

Parents should learn everything they can about their child’s condition. Straightforward contact with the child’s school can help ensure the services that the child needs. Parents may also need help understanding their child’s feelings and taming frustration about behaviors that their child can’t control.

The stress of raising a child with mental illness can lead to neglecting other important things in your life. It’s easy to let other things slide when you’re focusing on your child, but it’s important to take care of yourself. If you have other children, remember that they need your attention, too! Make sure they know what their sibling is going through and prepare them for changes to the family’s routine.

If you’re facing mental health challenges at home, don’t wait! Talk to your doctor to get the help you need.

Roeder Mortuaries Experience You Can Trust!

How do you help people who are going through one of the most trying times of their lives? Brian Roeder knows just how difficult it is to comfort loved ones left behind after a death, and his compassion and consideration for families go the extra mile. Brian is the fourth-generation funeral director and president/owner of Roeder Mortuaries, and family traditions are very important to him.

Before he decided to be part of the family business, Brian joined the military—he needed some structure in his life and he wanted to explore the world. While he was away, he realized that the Roeder family business in Omaha is where he belongs. He likes to say that it is his “servant heart” that drives him to care for people. It is imperative to Brian to meet the needs of families who come to Roeder Mortuaries in their time of need. Whether it is helping them navigate their grieving process, helping them plan the service, or just being present with a kind

heart, you can count on Brian and his staff to be there.

We all know that we will need these services one day, but most of us know nothing about the process and are woefully inexperienced with funerals. That is where Brian and his staff can help. They are experts and are dedicated to seeing everyone through their time of need. They can also help with an increasingly popular type of funeral planning: pre-planning your own service.

Brian Roeder, President/Owner

Some people choose to put their loved ones’ minds at ease by making advance funeral arrangements for themselves. “Many people do not want to talk about this subject because they do not want to think about it,” Brian acknowledges. “It is so much better for everyone, however, to make final plans.” These plans, he says, can be as detailed as you choose, from putting in writing what you want for your funeral service to paying for everything ahead of time at today’s prices. Some pre-planning documents can include everything from music selections to readings—anything you want at your service to help your family celebrate your life.

Many times, family members gather after the death of a loved one and are completely lost as to what to do for their funeral. Speaking from experience, I think pre-planning is an excellent and very thoughtful idea. Imagine the stress that would be lifted if the plans were made in advance.

There are many aspects to a funeral, and Brian is well aware that not every option is a good fit for every family. These days, there are different options to meet the needs of different families. These include traditional funerals, memorials, and graveside services. A traditional funeral service memorializes a deceased person with the body present. A memorial service is an event that takes place without the body present, and a graveside service can happen either on its own or after a funeral service.

You can also combine any type of service with a cremation. According to Brian, cremations are becoming much more common. You could have a traditional funeral before a cremation or

a memorial service can take place after a cremation. A person can also choose to have the remains returned to them without a service.

Whatever is chosen, services have changed a great deal over the last 20 years or so. The biggest change, Brian says, is how very personalized they have become. Roeder Mortuaries are flexible and strive to create a meaningful service that is customized for each individual. Brian never loses sight of the fact that he and his staff have been honored with the task of helping people through a very difficult time in their lives.

What exactly makes an excellent mortuary? You want to be confident about the care and the service you receive, so it’s wise to select a mortuary with an outstanding reputation. You want to make sure that they have a compassionate and caring staff and that you are treated with the utmost kindness. With that kindness should come authentic sincerity and excellent customer service. You also need a mortuary that is committed to families and is eager to create a meaningful and unique experience for you and your family. Omaha Health Therapy Center

Holistic and Healthy!

Immune support and healthy living are top priorities for Sarah Kracht, APRN, BC-FNP, the owner of Omaha Health Therapy Center. Whether you’re dehydrated from a spell of COVID-19 or recovering from cancer treatments, you can count on Sarah to take a holistic, integrative approach to your healing and wellness.

“Basically, we consider the whole person,” says Sarah. “We’re looking at the root cause, including early childhood up until the day of their visit to Omaha Health Therapy Center. It’s not only the physical aspects of their health, but also the psychological and emotional aspects of their health and lifestyle. We take all that information and develop a plan of care that’s integrative—a combination of Western medicine and Alternative medicine. We mix the two together to give the patient the best results.”

To reach optimal patient wellness, Sarah offers therapies like intravenous NAD, ALA, Nutrient Therapy, Ozone Therapy, Prolozone, Chelation, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), and so much more. Nutritional IVs include the Mega Myers cocktail, a nutritional formula created over 30 years ago to

combat multiple chronic conditions and boost energy and the immune system. A stronger immune system means better protection from any infection, from the common cold to influenza.

“By going to the root of the problem instead of just treating symptoms, we can help eliminate pain and inflammation, boost the immune system and help our patients feel better

and healthier overall,” Sarah says. “We start from childhood— any traumatic events in their life and how they grew up. There are a lot of psychological and physical components that affect well-being throughout a person’s life span; including injuries and traumas, everything that brought them to where they are today. “

Even an accurate diagnosis might not lead to true wellness if the treatment only addresses symptoms. “If it’s chronic fatigue syndrome, people look at it as adrenal fatigue. Well, why?” Sarah asks. “We are always looking for the root cause, looking at unhealthy lifestyle habits and any toxins that could be in the body. We eliminate the bad and put in the good. We do a lot of IV nutritional therapies and a lot of ozone IVs to help people boost their immune system. We have multiple routes to give ozone—ozone sauna, intravenous, insufflation (rectal, vaginal, ears, and sinus).”

Nutritional IVs are often used with cancer patients who need to quickly replenish vitamin and nutrient depletions. The cocktails are individualized based on what the patient is missing. “We see a lot of dehydrated patients,” Sarah says. “If they’re trying to get over COVID, we give a high dose of vitamin C and other nutrients they haven’t been taking in. For cancer patients with malabsorption from chemotherapy, we replenish the minerals and nutrients that they’re lacking at that time.”

Practitioners need advanced training to administer these therapies, Sarah notes. She has a master’s degree from Creighton University and is board-certified (a requirement in Nebraska). She has traveled the country since 2014 to gain specific certifications and is certified in all the therapies she offers.

Education for integrative treatments teaches safety, explains research, and is backed by physicians.

“I have been seeing Sarah at Omaha Health Therapy since May of 2019,” says patient Brittany. “When I first went to Sarah, I was having trouble functioning. I was in the ’aftermath’ of Lyme disease healing, so I had gut health issues, vitamin deficiencies, and PTSD, all of which Sarah picked up on immediately. I am now healthy and strong thanks to the protocol I was placed on. I was able to get my life back! I trust Omaha Health Therapy Center completely.”

Since treatments are specific for each patient, and each challenge is different, therapy can be “one and done” or a longer protocol. For example, if a patient has Hashimoto’s disease, Sarah dives in to find out why that patient’s thyroid is not working optimally and then treats accordingly.

Sarah advises us to watch what goes into our body by food or drink. Our body’s genetics or DNA can change with ailments and as we age, regulating how cells use the same genetic code. Sarah’s goal is to replace the bad with the good.

“Watch what you’re putting into your body,” says Sarah. “Watch what you’re exposed to and build up the best immune system so that your body can do what it needs to do. What you put in your body makes a big difference. Your body can heal if it has the right tools, but if you are full of toxins and inflammation, it’s a fight your body is exposed to every day.”

Cuddly Critters

Equestrian Sports

Saddle Up for Fun

Horses are one of the wonders of the world. They have partnered with humanity for millennia, as beasts of burden, modes of transportation, sporting partners, and loving companions. No wonder equestrian sports—that is, the riding of horses—is one of our society’s oldest sports.

I lived in the country in my early life, and I fondly remember the exhilaration of riding my neighbor’s horse. Researchers have also shown that horses act as natural tranquilizers—that their very presence has a calming effect. Riding is great exercise, burning calories and toning muscles, especially when you combine riding with barn work and grooming. It’s no surprise, given the things you can learn, the training evolved, and the physicality of horseback riding, it became a sport.

The ancient Greeks became skilled riders to give themselves a competitive advantage in skirmishes. Eventually, the English introduced competitive horse shows that highlighted the skills involved. Horseback riding became a sport because of the precision, expertise, skill, focus, years of training, and overall aptitude involved.

It was in the early 20th century that equestrian events were introduced in the Olympics, and those same events are featured today. Medals are awarded in three categories: dressage, when riders and horses perform a series of predetermined events; show jumping, when riders on horseback attempt to jump through a set of obstacles within a specific time; and eventing, when riders compete in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping in a single competition.

There are many additional equestrian sports that occur at other horse shows. In combined driving, a driver on a carriage pulled by horses takes part in three events: dressage, marathon, and cones. Endurance riding is a discipline in which riders and horses compete in races over long distances. Reining focuses on control—riders guide their horses through a pattern of spins, circles, and stops. Vaulting is perhaps the flashiest of equestrian disciplines; it is essentially gymnastics on horseback.

More than two million people ride professionally and many more for pure enjoyment. Why are people so attracted to the sport? First of all, it’s great exercise. Sitting on a horse correctly takes a lot of muscular coordination and effort. It’s not like sitting on a sofa—the horse moves, and you have to stay focused. You have to harness specific muscles and practice good posture. You are constantly adjusting muscles and giving directions to the horse. Riding, even for short distances, can get your heart pumping and can decrease the risks of heart attack and stroke.

The complicated nature of riding turns it into something of a meditative exercise. You have to stay alert and in tune with your horse and the riding conditions, so you won’t have time to check your phone or email. Focusing on the task at hand

can help people eliminate stress. Interacting with companion animals can also prevent stress and increase feelings of happiness.

Horseback riding lessons and events are done in groups, so you’ll expand your social circle with like-minded horse lovers. That includes the horse! Horses are gentle creatures, capable of showing real affection. Horseback riding is a team sport, and you can’t do anything without this majestic animal. They will teach you patience, perseverance, and the importance of non-verbal communication skills.

People have been using horses for therapy for millennia. People with physical disabilities benefit immensely from the physical aspects of riding as well as the confidence building and skill development inherent in this activity. Some camps and stables focus on helping patients thrive through equine efforts.

Horseback riding can teach children important life lessons, and young riders receive the same benefits as adults. Skills that are learned while riding horses can spill into daily life—skills like leadership, teamwork, cooperation, problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills. Horses have to be groomed and fed, which gives children responsibility. Grooming can be a wonderful bonding experience, but it’s also important to the horse’s health.

Experiencing an equestrian event can be fun and exciting. If you’re in the Omaha area, you can enjoy Olympic-level competitors at the FEI World Cup Finals (April 4–8 at the CHI Health Center). This is a cumulative event of individual series that features the best equestrians on the planet. The Omaha Equestrian Foundation, which operates the event, is also conducting educational and entertainment featuring Native American horse traditions and cultural impact. They are working in partnership with the Bluebird Cultural Initiative. For more information, visit omaha2023.fei.org.

Millions worldwide gravitate toward horseback riding, and it’s easy to see why. Horses are magnificent creatures! They may not be cuddly critters, but they can become best friends, partners, and instruments of personal growth.

Self-Driving Portfolios

Who’s Behind the Wheel?

A robot is a machine built by humans to do jobs normally done by humans. The rationale behind robots is that they free humans from involvement in routine tasks and allow them to devote their time and energy to more productive activities. We have built robots to sweep floors, to build and wash cars, and, ultimately, to drive the cars themselves while we go along for the ride.

Given America’s fixation with robots, it’s not surprising that they are now managing a portion of our investment portfolios. This is nothing new or unique. For more than 50 years, Wall Street brokers have used asset allocation models to reduce the time and effort required to manage money.

The original robo models were less complicated than the current version. They started with an allocation of 60 percent stocks and 40 percent bonds. Then, as the owner aged, the stock portion declined and the bond portion grew. Whenever one of the asset classes exceeded the preset norm, the excess portion was sold and placed in the alternative. The primary objective of the asset allocation model was to reduce volatility, not to enhance performance. This worked reasonably well until inflation invaded our economy and interest rates rose, causing bond values to fall.

Today’s robo accounts are more complex than their early cousins. A typical contemporary robo account involves a larger number of investment classes than yesterday’s simple stock-vs-bond portfolio. There may be as many as 12 to 15 different mutual funds involved. The mutual fund selection begins with several from among the major index funds, such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. Also included are sector funds, which invest in a single industry ranging from health care to technology. Many, but not all, also include a small position in real estate or international funds. The remaining dollars are placed in bond and money market funds.

The providers of robo accounts fall into two broad categories. The first and smaller category includes the traditional Wall Street firms. Most of their robo accounts are managed at the corporate level. The individual brokers do not normally manage the investments; they focus their time and energy on client contact and adding new clients. The second, and by far the larger, category of robo providers consists of the Independent Registered Investment Advisors. RIAs are primarily financial planners who assist investors with investments held at one of the major discount brokerage firms. The discount brokerage firms also provide online robo accounts, which their clients can monitor independently or with the assistance of a licensed broker employed by the discount firm.

Investors utilizing any form of robo account need to be aware of how often their account is repositioned. The most common form of repositioning is an adjustment to the ratio of the existing funds, rather than the introduction of new funds. The current type of active management is consider-

ably different that it was under the 60/40 model. Under the 60/40 format, arithmetic dictated the rebalancing timing. Those utilizing RIAs will experience more personalization of the reallocation based upon their individual circumstances. It will not be a preset mathematical calculation—more consideration will be placed on the client’s financial and life situation. Those who employ brokers from traditional Wall Street firms will experience repositioning based upon the needs of a broader-based population.

Fees are important because they can dramatically impact a robo account’s performance. It is important to ask your financial professional how much you are being charged. The fees can vary significantly, between 0.05 percent and 1.25 percent. The fee can also depend on any other services the advisor provides. In the case of RIAs who do financial planning, their fees are often based on a bundle approach. It is critical to ask the provider what is covered in this fee and how the portfolio is adjusted.

While fees are important to consider when selecting a robo advisor, keep in mind that the type of investment management you choose should align with your individual needs and temperament. Those seeking considerable guidance should expect to pay for the advisor’s expertise. Those who choose a DIY model should expect minimal fees in return.

Investing is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Before using a robo account, you need to ask yourself: What are my investment objectives? What are my investment skills, and how much time and effort am I willing to devote to monitoring my account? Once you have these questions answered, it should be evident if a robo account is right for you. The next step is to interview a variety of potential advisors to locate one that you feel comfortable with. Never hesitate to ask the tough questions. It’s your money!

The Vigorous Clematis

Less Fussy Than You Think!

Ah, the clematis vine! This vigorous vine is a hardy perennial. What more could you ask for in a flowering vine, really? They are hardy in Zones 3 through 9, and that makes them pretty fantastic in my book. Their flowers are simply stunning. You may think of them as classic purple, but the plant has an outstanding color spectrum of purples, reds, blues, and whites.

Most clematis are sun lovers, but there are a few that thrive in partial shade. That said, I don’t recommend planting them in the shade, and I speak from experience in this matter. Most species need at least six hours of sun each day. They love moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to a little bit alkaline. Careful planting breeds success. The best time to plant clematis is in the spring or early to mid-autumn.

These amazing vines can actually live up to 50 years or more. A lovely fact about clematis is that they symbolize ingenuity, which may refer to their clever ability to climb up and around structures like trellises and walls. These beauties are native to China and Japan and belong to the Ranunculus family.

Clematis are generally quite the showoffs, producing masses of very vibrant flowers. They add height, gorgeous color, and interest to many gardens. They are ideal for fences, trellises, and arbors. They are fairly easy to grow, but you must keep their roots cool. I always add a good layer of mulch to the roots. I found out the hard way that they do not like to have wet leaves. They will acquire a fungus, and they need air circulation around them to keep that fungus at bay. Having said all that, I promise that they really are easy to grow. Keep their roots covered, keep water off the leaves, and you will be amazed at what this vine does.

Apparently, clematis has a reputation for being difficult to grow, but I disagree. They do take two to three years to produce their first mature and magnificent display of blooms. That means it takes some patience, which some gardeners may interpret as the plant being fussy. In truth, it’s just taking its time! Another reason they may be considered difficult is the fact that most clematis need to be pruned yearly, and there is some confusion about when and how to prune. The timing and extent of pruning depends on when the plant flowers, which can vary based on the variety—the gardening pros at your local nursery can give you the details about your vine. In my opinion, clematis vines are very forgiving and not the fusspots that their detractors claim.

The name clematis comes from the Greek word “klematis,” meaning vine. The plant is often known as “Old Man’s Beard,” which comes from the long fluffy seed heads that look quite like an old man’s beard. Clematis is also known as the queen of the vines. When you’re searching for something that will give your garden a “Wow!” factor, this is it. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are all attracted to clematis. During a single growing season, a large-flowered hybrid may have a hundred or more blossoms. The flowers can be single, double, or semi-double. Bloom time can run from spring into autumn, depending on the species you plant.

The leaves and the seeds of the clematis were once used as a black pepper substitute when black pepper was very rare and expensive…but I don’t recommend it! All parts of the plant are considered toxic and can cause severe burning sensations and even ulcers in the mouth. That’s too spicy, folks! I guess the takeaway here is…do not eat clematis? Sometimes you cannot make this stuff up!

Some new hybrids are being introduced this year, and they are magnificent! One new one is Burning Love. The flowers are scarlet red, with a luxurious velvety texture, and it blooms twice in one season. Another variety is John Warren. It boasts massive flowers in mauve. Tie Dye is also new and shows off a gorgeous purple and white variegated bloom. My favorite new variety is called Fascination. The flowers on this are a deep purple with white edges, and they are shaped like bells. It is actually a non-vining variety, but it will grasp a structure such as a retaining wall.

There is an old saying about clematis: the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap. I have said before and I will say again that gardening teaches patience. Growth may seem slow as the plant builds a root system. Once established, clematis are spectacular, strong growers!

Aislinn Medical Spa

Helping Clients Reach Their Dreams

In Irish, “aislinn” means “dream” or “vision.” At Aislinn Medical Spa in Gretna, you’ll find a dedicated staff of medical and aesthetic professionals helping clients realize their dreams of looking and feeling great.

Sales and Marketing Director Jennifer Rohwer loves to talk about the transformation she sees in clients after receiving services at Aislinn. Clients exhibit visible differences after only a few weeks into a customized program, but it’s not just about the physical changes, Jennifer says. She loves to see the happiness and confidence they radiate when they feel good about themselves and the changes they are making.

Some of the medical services making a difference in customers’ self-confidence are dermal fillers, line relaxers, skin rejuvenation, and Coolsculpting. Coolsculpting is a non-surgical process that uses cold to reduce fat in the treated areas. Skin rejuvenation services include facial peels and microneedling, a process that reaches deeper levels of the skin to regenerate tissue. Dermal fillers add volume to reduce wrinkles, and line relaxer injections stop facial muscles from contracting and creating wrinkles. All of these procedures create quick results and require little to no downtime. For clients who are tussling with the unpleasant symptoms of menopause or andropause, Aislinn provides hormone therapy.

Aislinn’s spa services include traditional massages, body wraps, HydraFacials, organic facials, and facial peels. They also offer brow tinting, hair removal and waxing, eyelash extensions, teeth whitening, and microdermabrasion. If you have been wondering if there is a way to repair your skin or something else about your body, Aislinn likely has a solution for you.

Aislinn’s new Health and Wellness Program provides long-term weight loss solutions. It is a 12-week program that includes weekly injections of Semaglutide, a diabetes medication recently approved by the FDA for weight loss. Dr. Julie Waddell at Aislinn describes the medication as an appetite suppressant that releases sugar from the liver and stored fat from fat cells. The Mayo Clinic reports side effects that start off as minimal and become almost non-existent after the body adjusts to the medication. The Health and Wellness Program includes physical examinations, laboratory work, a consultation with a certified health coach, and more.

The approach of the team at Aislinn is cohesive and personalized. They meet with you to determine your goals and discuss options for treatment. They make it as easy as possible to get the results you want. A perfect example

is the Laser Hair Removal Club, an easy and affordable way to achieve smooth skin anywhere on the body.

Another way Aislinn creates joy for clients is with their customizable party packages. Gather a group of friends and spend the day relaxing, rejuvenating, and having fun. To schedule a party with Aislinn, let them know how many people will attend and which services the guests are interested in. The Aislinn team will customize a package that includes something delicious and fun in a private room for your guests—champagne and strawberries, anyone?

Aislinn will customize a party package for any type of celebration, but their new Bridal Beauty Collection packages are a big hit. You can choose from seven different packages in the bridal collection. They range from the Relax and Recharge package (sugar scrub massage, dermaplaning facial, and an injection of B12 and antioxidants) to the grand packages that include Coolsculpting, Juvéderm fillers, and much more.

The team at Aislinn knows how to celebrate their clients. They have four annual events, all large celebrations to thank clients and provide an opportunity for the public to meet the staff. They celebrated their third birthday in February and will have a gala in May with entertainment, a band, and more. Their holiday festivities take place in November, but they have so much fun that they’ve added “Christmas in July” events to their calendar.

Jennifer attributes Aislinn’s success to their joyful environment, personalized service, and small-town values. The spa is involved in the Gretna community, and Jennifer herself serves on the Gretna Chamber of Commerce board. The team pays attention to detail and provides personalized, one-on-one service for each client. This individual attention is essential, since their clients include women and men ranging in age from 13 years to 85. In just three years, the spa has doubled in size and has expanded their provider list to add another massage therapist and an aesthetician.

Aislinn Medical Spa is located at 818 Village Square, near the intersection of Highway 370 and Highway 6 in Gretna. You can find all their services and a profile of each staff member at aislinnmedspa.com. They are happy to answer your questions by phone at 402-397-2300, and they are even happier to help you feel good, inside and out.

Can You Hear Me Now? If Not, It’s Time for an Audiogram

We may think of hearing loss as a “senior” problem, but the truth is that hearing loss can affect anyone at any age. Roughly 1.4 per 1000 newborns have detectable hearing loss. CDC surveys indicate that five of every 1,000 children between the ages of 3 and 17 are affected by hearing loss. According to the national Institute of Health (NIH), 15 percent of adults (that’s anyone older than 18) experience some difficulty in hearing.

That said, the incidence of disabling hearing loss does indeed increase as the population ages—25 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent of those over 75 experience disabling hearing loss. Unfortunately, most hearing loss goes untreated for a long time. Only 16 percent of those who would benefit from some sort of hearing aid have tried one, and the average time between noticing hearing loss and seeking treatment is seven years.

To understand hearing loss, we must know how the ear works. The middle ear starts at the eardrum, where a chain of three tiny bones transmits sound to the inner ear. The inner ear helps both hearing and balance. Semicircular canals share space with the cochlea and control balance. The cochlea, a snailshaped bone containing minute hairs and fluid, controls hearing. The network connecting these parts sends signals to our brain, which defines them and determines the proper response. Interruption of the network causes hearing loss.

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sounds cannot get through the outer and middle ear. There are a variety of possi -

ble causes. Colds or allergies may cause a build-up of fluid in the middle ear. Ear infections (otitis media) may decrease our hearing. Conductive hearing loss may be treated with surgery or medication.

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs following damage to the inner ear or the nerve passageways from the inner ear to the brain. Some sounds are difficult to hear or seem muffled. Certain illnesses, ototoxic drugs, aging, head trauma, congenital malformation of the inner ear, exposure to loud noises or explosions, or heredity are often causes of sensorineural hearing loss. This is the most common type of hearing loss. It is permanent but may be eased somewhat by hearing aids. Most of the time, surgery or medicine doesn’t help.

At times, conductive and sensorineural hearing losses occur simultaneously. The combination (called mixed hearing loss) may make your hearing worse than either type alone.

Some risk factors for hearing loss are beyond our control. Aging may bring gradual degeneration of the inner ear. Genetic

makeup may make us more susceptible to ear damage from deterioration or sound. Factors we may have more control over include occupational or recreational noises and some medications. Use of pain relievers and diuretics can temporarily affect hearing through tinnitus (ringing in the ear). Illnesses resulting in a high fever may also cause damage.

Symptoms of hearing loss may include muffling of sounds or difficulty understanding words, especially with background noise. Asking others to repeat themselves or regularly raising the volume of the television or music may suggest hearing loss. Indications of more severe loss may be withdrawal from conversations or avoidance of social occasions.

Any time you experience sudden loss of hearing…especially if only in one ear… calls for immediate medical attention. If hearing difficulty interferes with daily life, go to your doctor, a hearing specialist, or an audiologist.

Painful ear infections, caused by blockage of the Eustachian tube, are most common in children. Many experience at least one in their first year. Symptoms include tugging at the infected ear, crying more than usual, non-response to sounds, sleeping difficulty, and fluid draining from the ear. Tubes may be inserted to drain fluid build-up.

Hearing aids may help some children. Cochlear implants are surgically inserted devices that directly simulate the auditory nerve. Assistive devices using FM technology can work in conjunction with hearing aids and cochlear implants. Prolonged hearing impairment can affect speech and learning.

CDC studies estimate at least 12.5 percent of children and adolescents have permanent hearing damage caused by excessive noise exposure. Teachers are encouraged to be aware of the acoustics and noise pollution in their classrooms. If hearing loss is indicated for your child, see your pediatrician, a pediatric audiologist, or speech-language pathologist for professional testing.

Preventing hearing loss is possible. Monitor noise levels with a decibel meter (some cell phones offer apps for this purpose). Avoid damaging noise or wear ear protection. If you don’t know what protection to use, ask your hearing professional. Once hearing is damaged, it cannot be completely restored. Check with your provider regarding insurance coverage.

Sarcasm It Hurts!

Sarcasm means “the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.” Everyone has that person in their life who has developed their sarcastic wit into an art. It may be a relative, a coworker, or even your boss. They love to spring it on their victims at inopportune times…at a party, a family dinner, or around the water cooler. Many times, it hurts.

Why are people sarcastic? Many people use sarcasm as a way to cover up insecurities or social awkwardness. For others, it’s a way to disguise their latent anger and make veiled insults.

“Despite smiling outwardly, many people who receive sarcastic comments feel put down and often think the sarcastic person is a jerk.” —Clifford N. Lazarus, Ph.D.

The word sarcasm is derived from a Greek word that means “tearing of the flesh.” Wow. Now, that’s what I want to do to people I love. Whoops! There I go, being sarcastic.

“When a person tells you that you hurt them, you don’t get to decide that you didn’t.” —Unknown

Studies have indicated that a lot of people who are sarcastic are not even aware of the hurt that they are causing other people. They may just see themselves as the laid-back, funny guy. Many times, if we voice our feelings to sarcastic attackers, they reply with, “I was just kidding!”

How do we deal with these artists of sarcasm? The experts advise three tactics.

1) Ignore them. Realize that many of these people are insecure, angry, or just don’t know any better. If this person appears randomly in your life, don’t respond…and don’t take it personally!

2) Respond literally. Sarcasm is supposed to be a joke. Instead, respond as if you’re interpreting what they said literally. If someone says, “Mmm, love that home cooking,” you respond, “Great, let me get you seconds!” At that point, the person has to explain that they were being sarcastic, and it gets awkward. They will think twice before making you their target again.

3) If the person is very important in your life, try a gentle approach. “You have a very sharp sense of humor. I know you are not a hurtful person, but sometimes it comes across that way.” This may open up the doors to a deeper conversation that will bring you closer and begin to resolve tension in the relationship.

Let’s realize that sarcastic humor is not kind, it’s not positive, and it hurts others. If you’re the attacker? Hear yourself and realize how it hurts others. I know you are a good person and probably don’t mean to be hurtful!

Age is a State of Mind How Old Are You, Really?

Age doesn’t signify the same thing for everyone. I believe we can experience age differently. Whether you’re a grandparent, a teen, or a toddler, the number of years you’ve been here on Earth is your chronological age. It’s linear, and it only goes in one direction. More susceptible to change is our point of view…how we look at age. We all have a mental age…how old we think. We also experience a physical age (how old we feel), which may change hourly as the day goes on.

When I was younger, my chronological age often felt like a problem. I wanted to go to school, but I wasn’t old enough! We didn’t have preschool or kindergarten. My best friend was a little older, and we played “school” over the summer. Her front porch was the classroom. I learned the alphabet, some basic letter sounds, and some basic arithmetic. Once I was in first grade, I was happy. My chronological age wasn’t a problem anymore…until I could hardly wait to be old enough to get my learner’s permit and then my driver’s license. I wanted to be old enough to date and go to high school and then college.

I know many parents are reluctant to let their kids grow up. There’s comfort in knowing where they are and what they’re doing. I’ve also seen parents who seem to want

their kids to grow up more quickly. There were kids when I taught preschool who were “four going on 40”…everything was serious. Kids need to have fun, use their imaginations, be free to make mistakes (and learn from them).

As kids get older, it’s only natural that they want more independence…to be in charge of their own lives instead of having to follow someone else’s rules. It’s also natural for parents to worry about the kids being on their own. We don’t really want the kids to be little again, but we miss their dependence. If they are getting older, so are we.

Mental age and physical age are sometimes at war. Yes, kids are often too young to do certain things. Adults think they are too old to do certain things. Ask yourself why. Is it because others your age think they’re too old? Mental age will encourage you to try…maybe you can do it. Mental age helps you remember the child within. Stay curious. Enjoy people of all ages. Mom lived for nearly 104 years, and she was always doing something…she didn’t want to be “a rusty gate.”

I’m celebrating a landmark birthday this month. I know this is as young as I will ever be. I intend to stay in touch with the child within. I’m good with old!

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:

“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!

The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!”

Windshields

Protection You Don’t Even See

No matter how you are traveling, there is always a windshield involved. (It does matter where you’re traveling—in England, they’ll call it a windscreen instead.) Whether you’re on a bus or an airplane, in a truck or a car, you’ll always enjoy the protection of a windshield.

Last fall, my husband and I learned about shatter-proof windshields up close when we took a road trip halfway across the country to the coast of Oregon. We came home with a giant crack in our windshield. Whatever flew up and hit us made a long crack across the glass, and I could only think of how lucky we were that the glass was shatter-proof!

In our case, there was no choice but to replace the entire windshield, but this is not true for every case of windshield damage. That doesn’t mean you should ignore a small crack! Even the smallest of chips in your windshield can expand rather quickly into a crack that threatens visibility and structural integrity.

However it happened and no matter how small the chip or crack is, it should be fixed immediately by a professional. If you do not address it, contaminants and dirt and moisture will eventually seep in between the layers of glass, which can lead to bad visibility and even fogging.

Whatever you do, do not try to repair the windshield yourself—unless you’re willing to sacrifice your warranty. Your work will likely void the warranty, which will be a real bummer when it comes time for a professional to repair the job you did. An auto glass restorer has the tools, resin, and expertise to fix that chip the right way. The watertight seal from the resin stops a chip in its tracks, preventing further damage.

As long as we are talking about auto glass, let’s take a look at window tinting. Heat-blocking films for car windows easily reduce the UV rays and the heat that comes through the glass. This protects not only your car’s interior but also its passengers! Tinting helps keep the car cooler whether you are in it or not. It also reduces glare, which can become a safety issue anytime you are driving.

Different states have different laws about the amount of tinting permitted on a vehicle. Restrictions can vary even from window to window! Overly tinted windows can reduce visibility, so make sure to check your local regulations and be safe. There are also about five or six different types of window tints, so ask your auto glass specialist which one is right for your circumstances.

Even the smallest of chips in your windshield can expand rather quickly into a crack that threatens visibility and structural integrity.

It can be hard to find time to make it to the shop for what seems like such a small issue. To solve this problem, many auto glass repair companies will come to you at home or work and fix the chip on site. It is an absolutely painless procedure and takes very little time.

How does insurance play into this scenario? If you have comprehensive coverage, windshield repair or replacement is mostly likely covered by your policy. Insurance companies also offer a full glass coverage add-on (in some states). A replacement windshield often costs a few to several hundred dollars. At that price point, many people decide just to pay the cost out of pocket instead of risking a higher premium after a claim. If you file a claim, your insurance company will provide referrals to repair shops. Keep in mind that you do not need to use a shop that your insurance company recommends—you choose where to repair your glass.

Windshields are damaged every day, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that yours will be! A windshield that never takes a hit should last the life of the car. The wiper blades, on the other hand, should be replaced every 6 to twelve months. Boy, am I late to that party! If you’ve ever driven in the pouring rain with worn-out wipers, you know how scary it can be. It’s vital to have wipers in tip-top shape.

Those of us who drive in the winter should consider “winter wipers.” These have an extra layer of synthetic rubber that allows them to stay soft without tearing…brilliant! For warmer inclement weather, we can take advantage of a rain-repellant coating that is applied directly to the windshield. It makes the rain bead up and roll right off the glass. There are a lot of brands on the market; your auto glass pro can help you choose.

When it comes to keeping your windshield in shape for a drive, there’s no one better to turn to than an auto glass professional. Here’s to safe driving!

Jill of All Trades Coordinating Home Improvement

Looking to remodel, renovate, design, decorate, or otherwise make an improvement to your home? Do you have a vision for what you want and but you don’t know quite how to make that dream a reality? Or do you know that something needs to be done but you are not sure what? Either way: Kim Stewart, owner of Jill of All Trades, should be your first call.

Kim is a hands-on, passionate coordinating professional who can get your home project done. This savvy entrepreneur has owned several businesses, including a janitorial service and painting company. Learning from the ground up, she acquired knowledge by working on new construction sites and watching what needed to be done. Her firm provides all the services needed for a home improvement project, from remodeling to design, painting, and more. She manages all the subcontractors, serving as the overall coordinator of the job in concert with her client.

“I began my career in the 1980s, when companies owned and operated by women were virtually nonexistent,” Kim says. “I worked hard to prove myself and was like a sponge, learning every detail of the renovation industry.” She started with janitorial work on new construction and went on to painting. She eventually started her own painting firm and branched out into remodeling work with contractors.

When asked how she came up with the name of the firm, she explains that it expresses the breadth of the services she provides and also highlights her feminine pride. “We use the phrase ‘jack of all trades’ when a man coordinates and performs multiple tasks,” she says. “It only makes sense to have a ‘jill of all trades’ as well.”

Kim feels that one of the keys to her company’s success is how she has been able to build long-term relationships with vendors and clients. “I treat my clients the way I would like to be treated,” she says. “We create a project plan together.” Sometimes, clients already have a vision and they just refine it together. Other times, the project starts from scratch. “I bring materials, fabrics, paint colors, the entire palette for discussion and we work on the design and creation together.” During the course of the job, Kim meets with customers almost daily, going over everything that has been done or is planned, modifying and adjusting along the way.”

That hands-on approach also garners the trust of subcontractors. “I tell my subcontractors that it’s not about the money…it is about the quality. You will not

succeed if it is just about the almighty dollar. Be honest—good work wins out every time.”

Another factor that sets Kim’s firm apart is the one-year written warranty on her work. She notes that few businesses in the Omaha area offer that. “To me, it’s all about trust and relationship-building. Clients trust my judgment and know my referrals will be good ones.”

Of course, her work is not without challenges. “Many people don’t know about all the work behind the scenes to get a project completed. There are subcontractors for every activity, from drywall to electrical. You have to coordinate and communicate with all of them, making sure each piece of the puzzle is done correctly and on time or adjusted along the way. It’s complex, with many moving parts.”

The pandemic added additional challenges to the home improvement business. “When COVID-19 started, we were hit hard initially, with two major jobs canceled. I was nervous for about a month. Then, the phone started ringing off the hook.” During the pandemic, Kim notes, people were not going out, and there was a slowdown in many fastpaced lives. “People were spending a lot of time at home and were looking at their houses with a critical eye. This hard look illuminated the need for renovation, repair, and redecorating. This has kept us consistently busy, and we’re glad for it.” The pandemic also affected the supply chain and cost of materials. Some of those challenges still exist today.

The good news is that work is still flowing, owing to satisfied customers who provide word-of-mouth marketing. One of those customers is Julie Twedt. “Kim Stewart is a contractor who is at the top of her game and has quality individuals like herself who do great work. Kim cares, keeps everyone on task, and delivered our wonderful home remodeling results two weeks ahead of schedule.”

Customer appreciation and satisfaction are vital to Kim’s success. If you’ve been looking critically at your home and are thinking of starting a remodel, renovation, redecoration, or other project, give this Jill of All Trades a call at 402-905-8144.

Out of the Box Reclaimed Products for Your Home

High-quality building products and home furnishings often come with hefty price tags that can really add up when you’re building, remodeling, or redecorating a home. To achieve a high-end look at a fraction of the cost, make Out of the Box your first stop.

This environmentally green company offers high-quality, gently used, reclaimed building products and home furnishings, including the Midwest’s largest selection of reclaimed lighting. Customers will find custom doors, lighting, furniture, entire kitchens and bathrooms, rugs, tiles, unique home décor items, and original art pieces. Home furnishings are displayed in vignettes so customers can imagine them in their homes, and exclusive design line products can be purchased at a fraction of their original cost.

Co-owner Jody Strauch-Lundberg says that they are “the Tiffany’s of reclaimed home improvement products.” About 20 percent of the inventory is made up of consignment pieces from midwestern family homes. They showcase a variety of design styles,

including mid-century modern, contemporary, and traditional. Products can be shipped all over the U.S. and overseas at affordable rates.

A native Nebraskan, Jody Strauch-Lundberg grew up in Lincoln, while her husband, Steen Lundberg, is from Sweden. The couple shares a deep passion and respect for the history and architecture of homes. They built custom homes in the Colorado Rockies and renovated historic homes in Denver for 14 years. When renovating homes, Jody says, “We

would seek out fixtures appropriate for the timeframe and era of the house.”

Wanting to be closer to family, they moved back to Lincoln and opened their first Out of the Box location in 2011, in the basement of an old furniture store. The building sold, and they moved to their current Ralston location, in a century-old granary that sat unused for 25 years. Jody and Steen refurbished the building while respecting and maintaining much of its original architecture, including retaining the augers on top of the grain bins. They opened the new location, featuring a 20,000-square-foot showroom, in January of 2022.

Jody and Steen enjoy “the hunt” for high-end building products, furniture, and home décor. “Many high-quality architectural pieces and products are left in homes, collecting dust,” Jody says. “We take these pieces and carefully clean and test them before displaying them in our showroom.” They often work with interior designers and offer an incentive program. “The interior design market highly seeks many of our products,” Jody shares. “It’s a good place to select client items, and designers can shop online before visiting the showroom. Our website includes photos and maker names of the products, making it easy for those seeking specific product lines.”

All Out of the Box employees have been in the building business and understand how items are installed. “We know if something will or will not work in a home and how things should be installed,” Jody emphasizes. Customers can bring their project’s architectural plans to the showroom and a team member can help find building products or décor.

Jody and Steen emphasize customer service. “We know our products well and can find décor to suit every taste,” Jody notes. Customers can receive assistance or browse at their leisure. “We want to provide very personalized service to meet customer needs,” she continues. “Customers appreciate the time we spend with them and our knowledge of the products. They like that everything is clean, well-maintained, and set in vignettes.”

Why should you choose Out of the Box? Using recycled and reclaimed goods keeps things out of landfills, and you can save a substantial amount of money on gently used highend products. “Be creative to set yourself apart,” Jody says. “It often only takes one piece to make a statement.”

Jody encourages others seeking to open a business in the area. “People should consider Ralston. The community is so supportive! There is a small-town attitude from the businesses and people who live here, with lots of interaction.” Out of the Box is located within Ralston Arts & Creative District, which was created to promote innovation and creativity. Out of the Box is on the art gallery walk for the district.

Jody enjoys seeing people get excited about finding a reclaimed piece they love. “It’s fun to see before and after photos from our customers. It’s rewarding to be part of people’s lives and help them find pieces for their home.”

Out of the Box is located at 7401 Main Street, in Ralston. The showroom is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Call 303-669-9808 for more information or find them online at outoftheboxstore.net.

Lawn Looking Sparse?

Spruce Up With a Sprinkler System

A new sprinkler system can make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood, with soft grass you can sink your toes into while the kids play carefree. You’ll have more time for things besides yard work and more cash in your pocket with today’s systems.

Children love playing in the sprinkler, and those old-fashioned manual sprinklers are great for keeping the kids occupied on warm summer days. They aren’t so great for creating a lush, green lawn. Aside from the mess of hoses and the commitment of time needed to go out and move the sprinkler every 30 minutes, manual sprinklers lead to unevenly watered lawns during unideal times. Watering at inefficient times leads to evaporation and higher water usage.

Generally speaking, lawns need about an inch and a half of water every week to be healthy. The needs of your lawn will vary depending on the weather, the grade of your yard, and the type of grass. If you can easily push a screwdriver six to eight inches into the soil, your lawn is too wet, which causes the roots to rot. If the blades of grass start to roll up and you see light patches, your lawn is suffering from drought. When your grass is a lush green and footprints bounce right back undetectable, you have a healthy lawn. You can achieve a beautiful lawn easily when watering is automated and regulated.

In-ground sprinkler systems are automated. You can program the system to water the lawn at a particular time (preferably finishing before 10:00 a.m.) two to three times a week, and you will create a perfectly watered lawn. Your system will be installed to reach every nook and cranny of your yard without creating dry or overly damp areas.

If you change your landscaping, you can adjust the sprinkler heads accordingly. You may decide to plant a garden and need to water it frequently. If so, you can program your system to run your garden’s sprinkler heads daily and the rest of the lawn twice a week. Every part of the yard will receive the hydration it needs.

With the advancements in robotics and technology, you can now find sprinkler systems that automatically adjust to the weather. Rain sensors shut off the sprinkler, so you aren’t running it in the rain. Wireless smart controllers adjust the amount of water it uses, running less if it has rained in the past few days and more if it’s been dry. Pressure-regulated sprinkler heads can reduce water usage by a gallon of water every minute. These can also be installed on existing systems.

When choosing a sprinkler system, look for a company that installs and maintains it to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to provide a high-performing and long-lasting system. Ask them about their maintenance policies and if they guarantee their work against leaks or other issues. Look up the contractor online to ensure it is a local company with a verifiable customer service record.

There are sprinkler systems you can buy and install yourself. However, doing so bypasses the professionals that will help you choose the best placements for your sprinkler heads. Irrigation specialists have years of experience designing the best systems to meet long-term needs. They will create a system to get you the best results with the least amount of water, saving you money on your water bill. Experienced professionals can also identify potential drainage issues and will create a plan to address them.

The very best time to install a sprinkler system is before you lay the sod. If the grass is already established, shoot for the fall to install a new system. When contractors install the system, they dig trenches to bury water lines. Your lawn will recover better in the fall because the soil isn’t dry from the summer sun, and new grass will have the spring to recover before the heat returns. Your spring and summer plants will be in hibernation mode, so the installation won’t disturb them. Trees and shrubs can be planted during or after the installation and will have plenty of time to dig their roots before winter arrives.

Speaking of those lovely Nebraska winters, you must shut the water off and winterize your system before freezing temperatures arrive. Your pros will ensure all lines are clear and drained. They will also inspect the system for any damage. In the spring, they will check the system, vacuum breaker, and valves before turning it back on. The fee to winterize and restart your sprinkler system is minimal compared to the money you’ll save not having to repair leaks or broken lines. Check with your irrigation specialist today!

Water Damage Prevention and Repair

This time of year, we can all agree on one thing: we’re ready for the weather to thaw and stay that way. Despite being mentally ready for the thaw, you may discover that your house wasn’t quite as prepared as you thought when surprise water damage turns up. Let’s take a look at what to do when the spring thaw reveals water damage and how to prevent it from happening next year.

Signs that your pipes may have cracked or burst over the winter are peeling paint, warping wood, dripping or standing water, musty smells, or water stains. Most commonly found on the exterior walls of your home, broken pipes may go undetected until the first time you use your outdoor spigot in the spring. When faced with a broken pipe, the best course of action is to call a plumber and get the pipe repaired or replaced ASAP. In the meantime, you’ll want to shut off the water to prevent additional damage. If the damage isn’t near a faucet or appliance with a localized shut-off valve, you may have to turn off the main water supply for your whole house.

Frozen pipes aren’t the only cause of water damage. Other common culprits are flooding, sewer backups, clogged toilets, heavy rain, melting snow, a leaking roof, cracks in your foundation, and broken appliances. With the exception of broken appliances, preventing further water damage while you wait for a plumber isn’t as simple as shutting off the water main. When water is coming from outside your

house, you’ll want to move undamaged items out of the way, contain the water (by catching drips in buckets or trash cans), and cover the leak or crack with a tarp from the outside.

Sewer backups and clogged drains are a little trickier. You definitely don’t want to mess around in standing waste water, but if the backup is coming out of a shower or storm drain, you can probably do some cleanup with a wet/dry vac while you wait for the plumber to arrive. Be cognizant of any electrical outlets that may have been exposed to the water, and don’t go in standing water that’s touching active wires.

After you’ve had your leaks fixed, the next step is dealing with the dreaded repair bill. Depending on what caused your water damage, you may be covered by your home insurance. Sudden, accidental, or damage from inside your house is typically covered by most home insurance policies, so be sure to save your receipts and file a claim! Damage from flooding or neglected repairs is not usually covered.

insurance agent, who do you call to return your house to normal? Water damage repairs should generally be handled by general contractors, roofers, foundation repair specialists, or a specialist in whatever area was damaged. If the damage has gone unnoticed for some time, you may also want to call a home inspector or remediation specialist to check for mold.

The best way to avoid water damage is through preventative measures like installing sump pumps or French drains, having your foundation inspected, and/ or waterproofing your basement. A sump pump is a small pump that sits in a pit (or sump) under your house or in your basement and automatically starts pumping water out of your house when necessary. They cost a few hundred dollars to install. French drains prevent standing water from collecting in your yard or draining toward your house by redirecting the flow of water away from your home and yard. They’re pricier than a sump pump (sitting at about $10 to $50 per linear foot), but with an experienced professional, they can be installed without tearing up your whole yard.

Generally speaking, you only need to call a foundation inspector when you notice some tell-tale signs of possible foundation issues like cracks in your drywall, gaps between your exterior windows and walls, parts of your house that seem to be “sinking,” counters or cabinets separating from the wall, cracked or leaning chimneys, and musty basement smells. If you find any of these issues in your house, definitely schedule a foundation inspection right away—foundation issues become more expensive the longer they are left untreated.

Waterproofing your basement can have many benefits, but the one we’re focusing on is preventing storm drain backups and flooding. If your basement regularly floods during heavy rain or storms, waterproofing your basement will keep you from having to constantly repair water damage. You’ll be able to store things in your basement without worry!

Nobody wants to deal with water damage, so keep up with prevention where you can—and be prepared in case prevention fails.

Senior Living Situations

Where Will You Live as You Age?

Many people focus on long-term financial planning to ensure a comfortable lifestyle when planning for retirement. However, have you thought about your long-term living situation? Remaining at home in familiar surroundings and maintaining independence as you age may sound attractive, but is your home ready for your longterm needs? Would a continuing-care retirement community be a better option for you?

As we age, our day-to-day needs may change because of factors like decreased mobility, strength, or health. Everyday tasks can become more challenging in homes that once served us well. If remaining at home sounds appealing, making accessibility changes in the house, budgeting home health care and home maintenance costs, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and having a supportive network of family and friends are essential considerations.

Accessibility improvements needed to remain at home successfully are impacted by mobility limitations and physical ability. Necessary enhancements might include a step-free entrance, widened doorways for walkers or scooters, better lighting, ramps, walk-in tub or shower, higher toilets, slip-resistant flooring in bathtubs and showers, lever door handles, and handrails in the bathroom or other areas of the home. If making decisions about needed modifications seems overwhelming, professionals can help.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists are trained and certified by the National Association of Home Builders to assist seniors who would like to age in place. Training areas include accessibility issues, remodeling projects, costs, and codes and standards. They also provide helpful resources and product recommendations. They collaborate with other professionals such as licensed contractors, interior designers, architects, and occupational therapists to create a personalized aging in place solution.

Ongoing costs for health care, personal care, household chores, and home maintenance vary depending upon one’s health and physical abilities. Transportation to and from medical appointments, medication management, and specific disease-related care are a few items to consider. Will assistance be required for personal care needs such as bathing, washing hair, and dressing? Owning a home also means performing household chores and maintenance. Will help be needed for housecleaning, laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, and yard work?

What financial resources will be needed? Friends and family members may be available and willing to provide support and minimize expenses. If not, services are available for transportation, household chores, medication and grocery delivery, and meal delivery. State and local agencies on aging are great resources for obtaining information about available services. Although you can’t plan for every scenario, creating a budget is

essential to ensure financial viability.

Even if you modify your home for aging in place, there’s no guarantee that your needs will not eclipse the level of care you can get at home; that is, you might have to move, anyway. Continuing-care retirement communities allow seniors to transition through different living situations as their needs change without having to move to another location. These communities provide various housing options, including independent living, assisted living, short-term rehabilitation, memory care, and skilled nursing care.

Continuing care may be a good choice for those without family or friends nearby to help, those with extensive personal care needs, those who have limited mobility, or those who cannot afford to make necessary modifications to their homes. They may thrive in an environment where they can socialize and be in the company of other seniors.

Before selecting a continuing-care retirement community, take tours and ask questions. Are you looking for a community that is close to family and friends?

Are the buildings and grounds clean and well-maintained? How does the staff make you feel? Are they welcoming? Do current residents seem happy? Talk to a few residents about their experience.

Ask about activities and transportation. Obtain information about staff training, credentials, continuing education, and staffing levels. Find out if personal preferences or requests can be accommodated. Ask about amenities such as dining, housekeeping, laundry, salon services, fitness facilities, and security. Asking questions will help you find the right community.

Once you choose a community, carefully review the types of contracts available. Is there an entrance fee, and is it refundable if you leave? What services are included, and what is charged for those not included? What happens if a resident needs the next care level and space is unavailable? How often are fees raised, and by how much? Are portions of the fees refunded to the estate if a resident passes away? Understanding the costs up front will alleviate dealing with financial stress later.

Many factors go in to the choice to age in place or live in a continuing-care retirement community. Thoughtful consideration and planning will help you choose the best option to meet your needs so you can enjoy your senior years.

You Can’t Rain on My Parade Be

Your Own Sunshine

“Don’t worry about what other people say, for they are seeing life wearing the wrong prescription glasses.” —Eladio Chavez

My husband, Manny, shared this wisdom from a conversation he had with his brother, Eladio. It brought to mind how much time and effort I have spent over the years worrying about what other people thought about me. I also put an immense amount of effort into trying to make everyone else happy.

As I matured, I began to realize the futility of these goals. No matter how hard I tried, there was no possible way that I was going to keep everyone in my life happy. When I made one of my friends happy, I succeeded in really irritating another one. Trying to please a family member? Boy, is that ever a hornet’s nest!

“It’s none of my business what you think of me.”

When others try to get you to behave in the way that they want you to behave, they are telling you that it’s important to them that they feel better than you. They are asking you to give up your joy so that they can have theirs. Wait…what’s wrong here?

“Care about people’s approval and you will always be their prisoner.” —Lao Tzu

I now know that the only person I have any control over is myself. I control my own feelings. It’s not anyone else’s job to do that for me. I now choose to follow my heart, to follow my gut. I do what feels good for me. I have learned that it is not my job to make everyone else happy…because they are the only ones who can make themselves truly happy.

“To be happy, you must be your own sunshine.”

This has made my life so much more joyful and peaceful. I no longer stress over others’ happiness and joy. Does it mean that I have become heartless and insensitive to those in my life? Absolutely not. Now, I have the best of me to give. Believe me, it is really hard to be constantly working on everyone else’s joy factor. It takes SO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY!

Now, I’ve become happy with who I really am. People who love me see and feel my joy and happiness…and they love me for me. I am happy with me, which means I am joyful most of the time. Guess what? That means I am so much more fun to be around! Bonus!
